I noticed suddenly that I had an irritated throat, and a feeling like something was always stuck back there. One day, I decided to look in the mirror and I discovered white spots on my tonsils! My first thought was that I had tonsillitis, and that I would probably have to get them removed. I was scared to death of going through this procedure, so I decided to do some research on my own. I found out these weird little white spots on my tonsils were something called tonsil stones.
Tonsil stones are a result of food particle build-up that settles in small cracks called the tonsil crypt. Aside from food, any kind of mucous, oral bacteria, or other things can build up over time, and form these little white spots on my tonsils.
It is actually quite a common problem that I was not aware about until I actually did my homework and found it out. I was definitely relieved, but still not happy with knowing I had these little stones stuck in my throat. Once in a while I would cough one up, but then another one would form right behind it.
You can dig out tonsil stones with a tool if you can look back into the far far enough, but it's important to be extra careful to avoid hurting yourself or causing further infection. A good salt water gargle also helped me, too. I realized over time that I was not the only one with these weird white spots on my tonsils. Thankfully, there are some ways you can avoid the tonsil stones from getting to be too big, and they can become manageable.
