Everyone experiences anxiety in one form or another. While some can deal with it as an ordinary emotion, others are overwhelmed and it takes over their lives. If you can not control your anxiety, you will more than likely fall victim to such disorders as: phobias, obsessive compulsive, panic disorder or a social anxiety disorder. While all of these are anxiety disorders, the signs of anxiety for each is very different.
If you are experiencing an overwhelming feeling of losing control or even that you are going to die, you are probably suffering from a panic disorder. While you are experiencing this, you will experience one or a combination of the following: racing heart rate, chills or hot flashes, sweating, uncontrollable shaking and hyperventilation. There are more symptoms and some of them are confused with those of a heart attack.
Someone who performs a constant ritual or routine for fear that not doing so will have a negative affect is a sufferer of being an obsessive compulsive and this ritual is one of the signs of anxiety to watch for. An example of this type of disorder is someone that will wash a phone receiver with a disinfectant cloth before using or someone that must immediately wash their hands after touching a door know. You have seen the pitchers and batters in baseball that must do the same thing before batting or throwing a pitch. While some may call them superstitions, they are in fact a form of obsessive compulsive disorder.
Social phobia or social anxiety is characterized by someone who believes that social situations dictate that they are being judged are in fear of how they are perceived. They fear being put into a certain social situation as the perception of them will be affected by how they act. This often results in severe panic.
While phobias are technically their own form of disorder, you can see how they often tie into some of these other disorders. If someone has a phobia, they will experience a fear of crowds, heavy traffic, tight spaces or things like flying. A phobia can be attached to just about anything and will create a large amount of anxiety when an individual is exposed to this.
There are many types of anxiety disorders and many levels of the disorder within each type. It may be a mild case that just evokes some fear that the individual can control on their own or it may be so extreme that even medication will not help. They must avoid these situations or things that provoke this anxiety at all costs.
