If you have toenail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, it might not be the worst medical condition there is on earth, but it is embarrassing and annoying – and if not taken care of, might escalate into worse things. There are many toenail fungus treatments available, so how to know which one works best?
There are many different kinds of medications and pills available to treat toenail fungus – but the problem is that any medication can only fight a limited range of fungi – and since there are literally hundreds of thousands of possible strands, using any kind of these antifungal prescription drugs is always a bit of a gamble – specially because you can’t expect any results for six to nine months. That means, you have to take a drug for more than half a year before you can even know whether it is the right drug or not.
Vinegar, specially apple cider vinegar has can be used to soak your toenails in. Leave it in there for around 20 minutes and then wipe your toenails dry with a paper towel. It’s important that you make the affected area totally dry afterwards, there should be no moisture remaining. Do this two to three times a day.
Tea Tree Oil
This is another popular home remedy for toenail fungus. You can just spread a couple of drops of tea tree oil over the affected area every night before you go to bed and let the tea tree oil dry. This oil has antifungal and antibacterial properties and is a popular home remedy for many other treatments too.
General tips are:
- wear socks made from natural materials (cotton, wool or silk) and avoid synthetic materials
- cut your nails as short as possible – the space underneath your toenails provides perfect breeding ground for fungus
- if you visit locker rooms or publish showers, always wear slippers so you don’t get in direct contact with the water there
