Depression is a serious condition and is often just brushed off or ignored by people. You might not even know that you are a sufferer. The symptoms can be subtle at first but the longer you are ill the more you will see the symptoms of a depressive state.
The symptoms of depression can vary broadly. They do not always involve being sad or wepy as many people might think. Individuals differ, so some might seem weepy and others can experience psychological or intellectual changes that can affect their energy levels, thinking patterns, diet and sleep to name a few. When you are suffering from depression your life and way of living can become a nightmare.
Doctors agree that a person experiencing some or all of these symptoms almost everyday for at least two weeks are suffering from clinical depression.
- Feelings of hopelessness.
- Depressed mood.
- Loss of pleasure in life.
- Motivation decrease.
- Negative thinking.
- Slowed behavior.
- Loss of interest in activities, friends or work.
- Change in diet and eating patterns.
- Sleeping problems.
- Crying often.
- Finding it difficult to concentrate.
- Suicidal thoughts and tendencies.
- Difficulty making important decisions.
Being clinically depressed can affect all aspects of your life and the people who are close to you. It changes the way you function and can cause tremendous damage to your quality of life. Most clinically depressed people will not enjoy the same things that used to bring them joy or happiness.
Many sufferers will push people that love them away because they feel that they do not deserve happiness or love. This feeling that you are not worth anything will cause you to push these people away. I was a sufferer of depression and I can tell you that it is no joke and should be deal with by a professional.
I chose to stay away from the drugs and opted to treat myself through counseling sessions. I used my own minds power to help myself deal with my problems. We found the root of my depression and I can finally say that I have won the battle.
I showed many of the symptoms on that list but I continued to deny that I was depressed after all, I did not deserve help, right. Always put yourself first do not feel stupid or inadequate because you are a depressed person.
The first step is acknowledgment, it is the hardest part of the process. When you can go and look for help you can beat your depression. I never knew anything about depression until I started to do a bit of research. Doing research helped me discover why I was feeling so down and now I never have to ask the question "what is depression" ever again.
