Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness, especially among African-Americans over the age of 40, people over the age of 65, and individuals with family history of glaucoma. Usually associated with increased pressure in the eye, it damages the optic nerve and often leads to progressive blindness.

Management of glaucoma as early as possible is the key to preventing blindness from developing. However, in the case of open-angle glaucoma, it is not recognized until the disease has progressed to an advanced stage. With closed-angle glaucoma, the patient usually seeks medical attention as soon as possible due to the sudden eye pain.

The most common and most convenient way to manage glaucoma is through medication in the form of eye drops. Several eye drops are used and the functions are usually to decrease the production of aqueous humor and to increase its outflow leading to decrease in intraocular pressure. Some medications are administrated for short-term and long-term effects so each one is necessary. This requires an effort in the part of the patient since compliance with the regimen is important. According to studies, the blindness among those who are already diagnosed and started medication was changed from non-compliance to home medication.

Beside medication, surgery is also one of the effective managements of glaucoma. It is important to note that surgery does not cure glaucoma. Instead, it only provides symptomatic treatment. To date, there is still no cure for glaucoma.

Trabeculectomy is the conventional surgery for glaucoma patients. This is done by removing a portion of the blocked fluid pathways, making an opening in the sclera of the eye and closing it loosely to function as the new drain of the eye fluid. It is effective in lowering intraocular pressure but may have side effects such as scarring, infection and cataract formation.

Laser trabeculoplasty is a treatment specifically for open-angle glaucoma. The laser stimulates the trabecular meshwork to open and drain fluid more effectively. Laser iridotomy is done by making a hole in the iris of the eye to drain fluid. It is effective among those with closed-angle glaucoma.

Artificial drain may also be implanted in the eye if the response to medication is poor. Another procedure called viscocanalostomy is done by making the front of the eye thinner to help drain the fluid, but this is not as effective as the conventional surgery.

Understanding Spatial Neglect in Stroke Patients

Understanding spatial neglect in stroke patients is detrimental to identifying if a patient is suffering from it. Spatial neglect is a syndrome that manifests itself after stroke. Normally, the patient itself is not aware of having it, making it an often under diagnosed complication of stroke without those often-visible indicators such as paralysis and speech impairment.

According to experts, the effect of having spatial neglect to a stroke patient is more harming than other common deficiencies. A stroke patient who is not diagnosed with having spatial neglect but actually has his will find rehabilitation difficulty and functional independence impossible, especially since there is a gap in accurately viewing things as they are and responding to it accordingly.

Caregivers have the important role, therefore, of identifying whether their patient has spatial neglect or not, after all they are the ones mostly with them. To fully gratify spatial neglect requires understanding what actually happens from the perspective of the stroke patient.

Prism adaptation is the most promising treatment for it so far, wherein the rightward horizontal placement of patients' visual fields are induced. But this still requires further research. Although there are stroke patients healed of this, experience has shown that remain severely disabled due to their stroke.

Caregivers have an important role in understanding spatial neglect for ease in identifying its existence in the stroke patient. This way, the patient's rehabilitation program will be formulated accordingly to ensure higher rates of recovery in the long-run.

Health Is Wealth – A Conceptual Critique

People have different preferences towards available life options. Same is true for the statement “health is wealth”. What exactly is it? There is nothing more valuable in our life than having a good health.

Patrick Meagher said: “Some people are so poor, all they have is money.” Nowadays people are influenced by wealth improperly that they don’t even care about their health, the greatest wealth. They don’t understand that without health there is no real happiness and enviable success. A person with poor health is unable to enjoy the pleasures of life. I think such people are foolish enough because they do not care about their health. Our first priority should be to maintain our health in the best way.

There are multiple methods and practices by which a person can stay healthy; Spending time in natural environment i.e. visiting parks and gardens. Physical exercise is also essential e.g. morning walks, playing sports, etc., it keeps a person smart and healthy. Water is the cure for all types of illness, so drink water to stay healthy and fit. Eating a balanced diet keeps people away from different illness and diseases. Always be optimistic and cheerful because: “Laughter/smile is the best medicine.” On the contrary, an unhappy person is more prone to fatigue and other illness.

Remember, living a healthy life can be the greatest gift you can give yourself because one cannot enjoy life if he/she is unhealthy. Vitamin D and Steroids

In this way steroids cause a rapid bone loss (osteoporosis).

In addition, Vitamin D boosts up immune system whereas steroids suppress it. Vitamin D reduces blood pressure whereas steroids increase it. Vitamin D reduces insulin resistance whereas steroids increase it. Vitamin D builds up muscles whereas steroids cause myopathy.

It is pretty obvious that steroids antagonize the effects of vitamin D.

What is the mechanism?

One mechanism is that steroids alter the vitamin D receptor. Steroids also cause obesity, and consequentially, decrease the available circulating vitamin D. There could be other mechanisms as well.

From a clinical point, steroids rob you off the beneficial effects of Hormone D in as little as 5 days. Therefore, I recommend my patients to double the dose of vitamin D while they go on steroids, and pay close attention to their serum and urine calcium. Salt restriction to 3 grams per day and use of a thiazide diuretic can reduce the urine calcium wasting.

"Prevention is better than cure" is your best bet when it comes to steroid-induced osteoporosis because no drug available currently can effectively treat this type of osteoporosis.

So when you take an over the counter decongestant that dries mucus secretions during a cold or flu you may be reducing your immune responses and contributing to prolonging the duration of your infection. It's better to take substances that thin and liquefy the mucus and keep it flowing freely with plenty of liquids.

Herbs like licorice may deal with excess mucus through a moistening action, loosening mucus and making it flow more readily out of the body. Other herbs that may help to do this include marshmallow and slippery elm.

Echinacea and Goldenseal are probably the most frequently used herbs for colds and flu in the United States:

Clinically Echinacea is not generally considered to be a major herb for working with the flu although it is often used as an auxiliary herb. Research suggest that Echinacea may be particularly helpful at the sunset of a cold or flu. If taken early enough in the appropriate dosages it may contribute to heading off a cold or flu.

Once the cold is well established, though, Echinacea by itself is not the most effective herbal approach. After the cold or flu has taken hold Echinacea continues to be useful in combination with other herbs and it helps shorten the duration and severity of the infection. By itself Echinacea is not usually sufficient to knock out a cold or flu.

Taking Goldenseal in the early stages of a cold or flu may actually make the condition worse by drying up the mucus membranes. This inhibits the mucus, saturated with antibodies to fight the bacteria, virus or other microbes, from working.

Clinically Goldenseal is used for subacute and chronic infections of the mucus membranes but it is not usually thought to be appropriate for use in the acute stage.

Goldenseal works as a cleanser and anti-inflammatory. It can be helpful at very specific times in very specific doses in a cold. But there is not a single study that shows that Goldenseal works as a cold fighter.

Even better cold & flu herbs:

Black elder is another traditional herbal remedy that has been shown that it may have good effects on the flu. A recent clinical trail showed that a preparation of black elder cases of the flu within three days and also boosted the immune system responses. Oregon grape can be used as a contemporary substitute for Goldenseal and may be much better than even Echinacea for use with the common cold.

Peppermint contains compounds that can relax the airways and open congested sinuses and nasal passes.

Ginger appears to fight inflammation and pain. It also appears to act as an expectorant and have warm effects that can be helpful if you are chilled.

Yarrow fires inflammation and muscle spasm and promotes sweating. It has long been used against colds and flu.

Thyme is an expectorant and appears to fight microbes. Its flavonoids may help decrease smooth muscle spasm which may assist in opening tight airways.

Mullen is a demulcent which contains mucilagous substances that coat and soothe irritated respiratory linings. It may help to loosen a cough and fight viruses.

More natural herbal remedies:

St. John's Wort has been shown in test tubes studies to inhibit influenza A viruses and parainfluenza virus but not rhinovirus (a cold virus). Osha has traditionally been used in the Rocky Mountains as the most important plant for treating respiratory infections. Osha is used extensively to treat colds, flu, and bronchial infections. The tincture or tea is antibacterial.

Boneset is used as a traditional remedy for the flu. Traditionally, Boneset was used as a major remedy for the flu, fevers, and as a general tonic. It has been used to treat both acute and chronic conditions. In one study the immune stimulating polysaccharides in Boneset were found to be ten times more potent than Echinacea polysaccharides.

An herbal bath may be an effective remedy for accelerating cold symptoms and increasing immune responses. It may help to nip them in the bud. During the bath the essential oils of the herbs are released by the hot water. These oils are believed to be absorbed through the pores of the skin and through the nose and mouth mucus membranes. Absorption through the mucus membranes may bring the oils into contact with the upper respiratory tract where they are able to exert their antibacterial effects.

Your C-Section Incision – Look Out For These 4 Warning Signs of Potential Problems Ahead

Your C-section incision needs to be monitored regularly for the first few weeks, watching for any changes in its appearance.

There are some changes and conditions that are normal to see with your C-section incision, but other differences that could be signs of potential problems ahead. It is common to feel a large ridge or lump under the scar which is scar tissue forming underneath, this should reduce over time.

Another common concern many moms notice is the area often feels slightly numb and tight. These are all normal responses to the effects of the operation and should all gradually become less noticeable over the following weeks.

It is important to be very vigilant over your C-section incision scar because if it becomes infected, the healing process can take many weeks longer.

You should always call your doctor or midwife immediately if you notice any of the following: –

#1 Redness – the edges of a healing incision will normally appear slightly red, this is a natural reaction to the healing process. If the redness increases or starts to spread more than half an inch from around the wound then this could be a sign of something a little more sinister and you should contact your doctor or health advisor.

#2 Heat or excessive warmth on or around the wound. If your wound feels particularly hot compared to previous sensations and if this is accompanied by new pain or discomfort, then it be worth having it looked at.

#3 Any change or unusual appearance of the incision. Your C-section incision should gradually become less inflamed, smoother in appearance, less painful and more comfortable over the following weeks. In you notice any changes other than improvements, monitor them closely and if they continue or deteriorate any further then speak to your doctor.

#4 Any puss in the incision. If you suddenly notice a pussy discharge from your C-section incision after having a clean wound previously, or if the area starts to get mildly tender or painful, this could be a sign that it isn’t knitting together very well and again you need to monitor the area closely and speak to your doctor if it continues for more than 24 – 48 hours.

If your C-section incision pulls apart and starts bleeding, apply an antibiotic cream, to keep any bacteria away from the wound. Do not apply any creams other than an antibiotic cream until your incision has completely healed. If you notice any bleeding, applying slight pressure to the wound may help to stop this. If the wound keeps bleeding after you apply pressure, call your doctor.

It important to stay vigilant and not obsessive over your C-section incision because any problems spotted early can reduce their severity over the long term. Don’t panic over the slightest change, just monitor it and if you see further deterioration then contact your doctor or health care advisor.

Insulin Pens – The Basics of This Easy Injection System

Instead of fumbling around with syringes and bottles of insulin, you can fumble around with an insulin pen. Just kidding. An insulin pen – sometimes called a pen syringe, injection pen or simply, pen – can be a more accurate and convenient delivery system of insulin into your bloodstream.

Pens are quite popular among diabetics. An insulin pen looks remarkably like a writing pen, only larger. It consist of a cartridge, a teensy-tiny needle and a dosage dial. The insulin cartridge may need to be replaced from time to time, while the pen needles are entirely disposable.

Types of Insulin Pens

You have a variety of options from the several manufacturers of insulin pens. Pre-filled pens are usually recommended for type 2 diabetics. They are disposable and need to be replaced once the insulin cartridge is empty. The drawback is that this type does not readily accommodate adjustments to exercise and diet.

The other main type of pen is the durable pen. It uses replaceable insulin cartridges that are discarded once the insulin is fully used. With a new cartridge in place the pen is ready for use again.

A relatively new addition is the insulin pen with a built-in memory. It keeps track of the time and date as well as the dose. Nice.

How to Use

Insulin pens are very easy to use. As well as their accuracy and obvious portability, pens may be even easier than using a bottle and syringe. Once you get this simple routine down, you'll see how easy it is.

First, find a good injection site. There are several candidates including the abdominal area, thighs, buttocks, the area of ​​the back just above your waist, your leg or upper arm. Try to stay at least an inch away from the previous spot and two inches away from your navel or any scars. Also be careful not to use areas that are swollen, bruised or tender.

Some people first clean the injection site with an alcohol pad or a cotton ball dabbed with alcohol. I do not do this. The alcohol tends to make the injection sting. I have not developed any infections from this omission, but this is up to you – with your doctor's knowledge, of course.

Now remove the cover from the pen. Make sure there's enough insulin for the dose. Also make sure the insulin is not cloudy or otherwise unusable. Insert a disposable needle into its place (see the individual instructions for your pen). Once the needle is properly set, clear out any air bubbles in the pen. Hold the pen up and press the end of the pen until a drop of insulin comes out. You may need to repeat this a couple of times until you see a drop of insulin at the tip of the needle.

Set the dose of insulin you want to inject. Pinch and hold the site where you will inject the insulin. Insert the needle all the way and continue pinching your skin while you deliver the dose. Once you're done, put the insulin pen cover back in its place.

Health is Wealth – Do You Agree?

I agree whole-heartedly with the saying “Health Is Wealth”. If a person is not healthy then he or she will find it very difficult or even impossible to enjoy life, even though he or she may be very rich.

If I am asked to choose one from two of the following things, which will I prefer: health without wealth, or, wealth without health? Without hesitation I will choose the former. There is no doubt.

Wealth is generally associated with how much money a person has, that is, how rich he is. An uncle of mine is very rich. He has just about everything anyone can hope for, and some things no one dares to hope for. That is how rich he is. He lives in a huge mansion guarded by huge dobermans and sophisticated burglar alarms. He has expensive cars, furniture, paintings and other rich man’s toys. Well, he has everything except good health.

Everywhere he goes he carries with him a bag of medicine. He has to take pills everyday for his weak heart, diabetes and hypertension. He is about sixty years old and has spent his life accumulating wealth. Without doubt he has succeeded in becoming very rich. However he has also succeeded in becoming very unhealthy too. He laments about his lack of health and says that how he wished that he was young and healthy again. Unfortunately, he cannot regain his health again.

This example of wealth without health is not what I want to follow. It is ridiculous to have so much material wealth but being unable to enjoy it. What is the use of money when one has to take so much medicine everyday just to stay alive? How can one enjoy life when one’s body is weakened by disease and pain? No wonder my uncle laments so.

Health without wealth is far better. That is what I have now. I do not have to worry even a bit about what I can eat or do. I eat and do what I like because my body is healthy. Of course I do not abuse it by taking drugs or overexerting myself. I take good care of my body. In that way I stay healthy.

With health I can go about my work with joy. If I become rich, then that is fine. Then again, I may lose my riches, but that is all right too. I can always do the things I enjoy whether I am rich or not. I can play games, swim in the sea, climb hills, eat delicious fruits and appreciate the things of this beautiful Earth. This is indeed wealth – to be healthy and joyous.

Nobel Peace Prize Winner Makes the Kind of Difference All of Us Can Be Part Of

The surprise choice of this year's Nobel Peace Prize, Bangladesh Professor Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank, applied a simple idea and are making a huge difference in the world. By offering small loans to poverty-stricken entrepreneurs in third-world countries, Professor Yunus is providing the means for free enterprise to begin to transform communities and historically nations. In particular, women are benefitting from the availability of micro-credit. Now banks and other institutions elsewhere in the world are starting similar programs modeled on Grameen Bank's initiatives.

In an interview just after learning he won, Professor Yunus said this:
… [P] overty in the world is an artificial creation. It does not belong to human civilization, and we can change that, we can make people come out of poverty and have the real state of affairs. So the only thing we have to do is to redesign our institutions and policies, and there will be no people who will be suffering from poverty …. People come out of poverty every day. So it's right in front of us what happens and it can be done globally, it can be done more forcefully, we can organize more things to go with it, so this is something not theoretical issue, it's a very real issue …. We did not do anything special; lend money to the people so – but they never lent it to the poor people – all we did was lent it to the poor people, and that makes the trick. That makes the change.

The amazing difference between this strategy and all the failures of the past is that here is someone taking a proactive approach to the seemingly intractable problems surrounding him. His motives are not alt altistic; His bank is actually turning a profit.

Why can not the rest of the world take a lesson from Professor Yunus and either adopt or adapt his strategy? When we do, an amazing societal metamorphosis is possible.

The Proactive Messiah

The Lord Jesus Christ took a similar approach when He "went around doing good" (Acts 10:38). He invested in people, communicating to them that they had value and tremendous potential. He convinced them that He believed in them and that He was willing to sacrifice for their benefit.

As His Follower, Accept His Challenge!

Jesus challenges His followers to do the same in their world. "Give to the one who asks something of you, and do not turn away from the one who would borrow from you. … That you may be sons of your Father in heaven. good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous "(Matthew 5:42, 45).

Your investment need not be money. The person you meet may only need a moment's attention, eye contact, an open smile, a friendly conversation, a ride of a few blocks, or directions in an unfamiliar part of town. You have the opportunity to communicate that you care, that you think he or she has worth as a human being, that you do not view them as an "untouchable."

As they respond to your kindness, warm up to your proffered friendship, it's time to confess Christ. In simple ways that are not abrasive, you can let them know that you follow Jesus, and that makes all the difference in your life. It's because of Him that you see hope – hope for our world and hope for them. Because He has invested in you, you are willing to invest in them.

Be proactive – make a change for the better in the world around you.

Palestine of the first century was filled with beggars. These needy people were constantly asking for money and seeking other assistance. Jesus certainly had the power to wave His hand and heal them all in an instant. Why did not He? Because He had a higher purpose.

He was not content to cure paralysis of the limbs and blindness of the eyes. His intention was to reach down into the soul and bringing healing to a paralysis of the will and blindness of the heart. He did not have to touch people to heal them; He proved that on occasion. His touch was therapeutic on a degree level more than just eradicating disease and deformity. It communicated love, acceptance, and esteem in an awesome, life-changing way.

Do you own study of these passes: cleansing a leper – Mark 4: 40-45; healing a deaf mute – Mark 7: 31-37; blessing the children – Matthew 19: 13-15; and healing two blind men – Matthew 20: 29-34.

Look also at the times when He bought and / or accepted help from someone. What did this communicate? Are we merely patronizing people, or do we see them as our companions in life's journey?

Take a look at these accidents: asking for a drink – John 4: 4-42; asking for a place to stay in a strange town – Luke 19: 1-10; accepting a gift of gratitude from a friend – John 12: 1-8. Causes of Seizures

Epilepsy is a group of disorders in which there are recurrent episodes of altered cerebral function associated with a seizure. The clinical manifestation of these seizures varies in effect from brief lapses of awareness to prolonged bouts of unconsciousness, lim jerking and incontinence.

There is no clear cause of seizures in many cases. However, in up to 40% of people with epilepsy there is a family history of epilepsy in a close relative. Genetic factors are there before a strong feature in the cause of seizures.

Lesions and seizures

Lesions (caused by either disease or injury) which involve the cerebral cortex are also likely to cause seizures. Partial seizures have the highest incidence of a detectable cortical lesion. This is particularly the case when the lesion is in the temporal lobe. Lesions can be caused by disease, brain damage at any age, meningitis, encephalitis and brain abscess, cerebrovascular disorders (such as stroke), cerebral tumors and degenerative diseases of the brain. However, it is also true that around three-quarters of patients with epilepsy have no evidence of an underlying lesion.

What can precipitate seizures?

A number of precipitating factors may provoke a fit in susceptible people or exacerbate established epilepsy. For example, causes can include sleep deprivation, hyperventilation, hypoglycemia and antidepressant drugs. Other factors which are also proven to provoke fits include alcohol and drug ingestion or withdrawal, high fever, anoxia, physical and mental exhaustion, a flickering light, visual patterns, and even procurement to television screens. Uncommon triggers for a seizure include loud noise, hot baths, music or reading.

Single seizures

Sometimes there can be a single seizure associated with some of these factors, such as a spike in temperature, alcohol use or drug withdrawal. These people would not be given a diagnosis of epilepsy my a medical professional, since epilepsy is by definition a chronic brain disorder characterized by recurrent seizures which occurs intermittently over an extended period of time.

Both children and adults with epilepsy have a higher than expected rate of psychiatric disorder. In children this increase can not simply be attributed as a reaction to the stress of coping with a chronic illness. It has been found that children with epilepsy were five times more likely to have psychiatric disorder than children with chronic handicaps not affecting the brain.

Snoring – Types and Causes

There are two types of snoring: primary snoring and snoring indicative of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). If your significant other is a snorer, you can conduct a sleep study, which is called a polysomnogram, to determine which type of snoring your significant other is suffering from. Of the two types of snoring, primary snoring, which is also called simple snoring, is the one that you should be concerned about the least. A person will not suffer from any health problems or lose out on any sleep because of primary snoring. You can tell a person is suffering from primary snoring if you can hear loud breathing while that person is sleeping. Primary snoring is uninterrupted and periodic. The noise from the loud breathing can be of any decibel level. Primary snoring results from some type of nasal passage blockage. The other type of snoring is more of a health concern and a doctor should be consulted for treatment recommendations. OSA can occasionally cause a complete blockage of the air passes for as long as 10 seconds and this may result in death due to suffocation. According to the National Institutes of Health, 12 million Americans have OSA and it is as common as diabetes. OSA sufferers can have as many as 20 to 30 involuntary breathing paususes during hour during sleep. These paususes occur because the throat muscles and tongue relax and block the opening of the airway. A person suffering from this type of snoring will have early morning headaches, problems staying awake during the day and low oxygen levels in the blood. If OSA is left untreated, a person can have high blood pressure and increased risk of cardiac arrest, stroke and heart disease. Unfortunately, 90% of OSA sufferers are undiagnosed and untreated.

Snoring occurs because of the vibrations of tissues against each other in the back of the mouth and nose. These tissues obstruct the airway and consist of the soft palate, the throat, the uvula, the tonsils, or the adenoids. Snoring occurs during sleep because deep sleep is what causes the relaxation of the throat muscles. This partially closes the airway. This narrowing of the airway obstructs the air flow, which causes the snoring. A narrower airway will cause louder noise because there will be more friction. There are several other causes of snoring. If you're not in shape, this can lead to poor muscle tone and lax muscles, which can contribute to snoring. Alcohol, sleeping pills, or antihistamines can increase the relaxation of throat and tongue muscles. Excessive fatty tissue in the neck can cause your throat to become smaller. A long soft palate or uvula can narrow the opening of the airway. A stuffy nose from a cold can block your nasal airways and make it harder to pull air through it. This will create a vacuum in your throat and pull together the tissues of the throat. Smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke can cause the throat muscles to relax and also creates nasal and lung congestion. Men are more likely to snore than women because they have narrower airways. When you're middle-aged or older, your throat become narrower and the muscle tone in your throat decreases. A deviated septum, which is a deformity of the wall that separates one nostril from the other, can cause obstructed breathing.

Why People Get Pacemakers – A Symptom List

It is difficult to draw the portrait of the "typical pacemaker patient." Pacemaker patients include infants and children, athletes and schools, the aged and infirm. Despite the fact that pacemakers have been standard treatment in medicine for cardiac arrhythmias for over 50 years, most people do not know much about them. In fact, sometimes people get symptoms, see their doctor, and are surprised to find out that a pacemaker is the prescription.

People get pacemakers to correct a problem with the heart known as a cardiac arrhythmia. In layman's terms, it means the heart's natural rhythm is getting out-of-whack.

While just about everyone often experiences occasional but very short bouts of out-of-rhythm cardiac activity, some people have stubborn arrhythmias that cause symptoms, impair their ability to lead a normal life, and are highly unpredictable. These people need pacemakers. Symptoms that may mean you need a pacemaker include fatigue, dizziness, lightheadedness, even fainting, as well as ability to exercise without getting overly out of breath.

These are pretty vague symptoms and a person could easily have all of those conditions and not need a pacemaker. But let's talk about what's really going on.

The healthy heart beats in a specific rhythm that coordinates the heart's upper chambers (atria) and lower chambers (ventricles) in such a way that the heart beat is quite efficient at moving a very large quantity of blood throughout the body. This blood is called cardiac output. If cardiac output drops to zero, the person dies in a matter of minutes.

But in many cases, the electrical system of the heart (not the dumping ability) starts to falter. This is an electrical problem of the heart-not a problem with the heart's ability to pump blood. Yet many people do not even realize the heart as an electrical system.

Electrical impulses produced by the heart guide the heart's rhythm. If the heart stops producing electricity in a regular manner or the electricity no longer travels properly through the heart muscle, the result can be an arrhythmia.

There are two main types of arrhythmia that can lead to a person's getting a pacemaker. The first is called "sinus node dysfunction," which sounds very complicated. It really means that the heart no longer produces electrical energy at the right rate.

The heart has the amazing ability to produce electricity. This is accomplished by a small area of ​​tissue called the sinoatrial node (nicknamed "sinus node" or just "sinus") in the upper right hand side of the heart. If the sinus node gets sluggish or produces electricity erratically or produces electricity fine at low rates but can not keep up when you exercise and need a faster heart rate … that is sinus node dysfunction.

About half of all people with pacemakers have this condition. The resulting arrhythmia for a person with sinus node dysfunction is a heart rate that is too slow to support normal activity. The medical term for this is "sinus bradycardia." Because you do not get enough cardiac output to do normal things, you can find yourself getting winded, tired, dizzy, or even passing out doing things you used to do.

The second kind of arrhythmia that can lead to a pacemaker sounds a lot simpler, but the name is a bit of a misnomer. It's called "heart block." Heart block is not really a blockage at all. Instead, it means that the electrical impulses produced by the heart no longer travel efficiently through the heart muscle. The electrical energy gets delayed or even blocked in some areas.

In the healthy heart, the electrical energy that causes the heart to beat starts in the sinoatrial node (top, right side of the heart). It then travels out over the atria and then downward. As it makes its ways to the ventricles, it passes through a junction called the "atrioventricular node" or or AV node.

Once the electrical energy goes through the AV node, it travels to the ventricle and causes the ventricles to contract and pump blood. Heart block occurs when there is a problem at the AV node. Sometimes the electrical energy gets delayed in such a way that the atria and ventricles are no longer working together.

In extreme forms of heart block, the energy from the top half of the heart can not make its way down to the bottom half at all (this is called "complete heart block"). Because the atria and ventricles do not work in harmony, cardiac output is impaired. The result is the same slew of symptoms: lightheadedness, dizziness, shortness of breath, feeling tired all of the time, and even fainting.

About half of all people who need pacemakers have some form of heart block (it can be mild to severe).

Arrhythmias can get fairly complicated. For example, one person may have both types of these arrhythmias that require a pacemaker, that is, one person can have sinus node dysfunction and heart block at the same time. Even individuals who might only have one arrhythmia right now can develop another kind of arrhythmia in the future.

Pacemakers accomplish this by "filling in the missing beats."

Pacemakers are small electrical devices implanted in the chest. They deliver electrical energy to the heart at precisely the right moment to keep it beating in a way that is as "normal" as possible. In many patients, pacemakers restore normal heart rhythm. In some patients, the arrhythmia may be too severe for a normal heart rhythm to be restored, but the pacemaker can at least come close.

Pacemakers "know" when to deliver electrical energy to the heart because they monitor every beat of the heart and respond according to how the physician programs them. This is a useful feature since many facemaker patients do not require constant pacing. In fact, for many people, arrhythmias are not permanent at all, but come and go, sometimes for brief periods. The pacemaker monitors the heart's activity and jumps in with stimulating (pacing) energy when an arrhythmia occurs.

There is, at the moment, no cure for arrhythmias in the sense that an erratic heart rhythm can not be restored with an operation or a pill. True, operations, pills, and other remedies can help manage symptoms or even correct part of the problem.

Pacemakers are actually very safe ways of dealing with specific arrhythmias. Although they're implanted in the body, they do not deliver drugs or other chemicals into the body. They use electricity, which is the very substance the body would generate itself, if it could.

Doctors have a lot of flexibility in terms of how the pacemaker is programmed, so they are suitable for a wide range of people, from athletes to newborns to bedridden seniors.

And pacemakers have a memory so that they can report back to the doctor what's been going on in the patient's heart. Not all arrhythmias can be treated with a pacemaker. But for rhythm disorders like heart block or sinus bradycardias, pacemakers are a safe, effective, and well proven technology that can make a big difference in the lives of those that need them.
