Moreover, Tamiflu (oseltamivir) capsules are now available in 30mg and 45mg doses, especially for children.

Children tend to be major carriers of the influenza virus as they have limited pre-existing immunity, often spend time in groups and share germs easily. Tamiflu can reassuringly be used for the management of influenza in children as young as one year old. In clinical studies, Tamiflu was well tolerated and did not increase the risk for neuropsychiatric adverse events.

Tamiflu when initiated within 48 hours of onset is known to:

• Reduce influenza severity by almost a third (29%)

• Reduce the duration of the illness by a quarter (26%)

Furthermore, new data reveals that if Tamiflu is taken within 24 hours of symptom onset:

• The influenza severity is halved (52%)

Suffering From Alopecia Areata Hair Loss? Find Out How You Can Beat It!

Alopecia Areata Hair Loss can be a real bummer because I think we all know just how important our hair is to us. Not only for its biological benefits of thermoregulation (meaning it keeps our head warm) but having good hair can make or break a person's appearance.

I think it is safe to say that our hair is one of our main sources of self-esteem, and when we begin to suffer from Alopecia Areata Hair Loss our confidence can begin to dwindle.

There are several different variables that have been known to cause a person to lose their hair, including genetics, vitamin deficiencies, poor diet, stress, lack of exercise and alopecia Areata Hair loss which we will be discussing today.

You will be happy to hear that all of these different causes of lost hair can be prone and even reversed, however, it is important to understand the underlying cause of your thinning hair problem before you will be able to solve it. So, let's get our facts straight:

What is Alopecia Areata Hair Loss?

It's caused by an auto-immune disorder that will eventually lead to your loss of hair. This condition has been known to primarily affect the scalp, although it has also been found to affect other parts of the body.

What Causes Alopecia Areata Hair Loss?

It results from a failure in our auto-immune system. The body is protected by our white blood cells, however, when this condition occurs, the white blood cells begin to turn on the body and will not only attack the normal germs, it will also begin to attack itself. These white blood cells may begin to attack the hair follicles which will cause them to ever dry up and die, which will then lead to losing your hair.

Why Does This Happen?

Experts are not exactly sure why Alopecia Areata hair loss causes this change in white blood cells causing them to attack your hair follicles, but they have speculated that it might have something to do with a predisposed genetic condition or a viral infection.

How is this Disease Developed?

Alopecia Areata Hair Loss is believed to be primarily a genetic disorder. There is no clear cut answer to why the white blood cells turn on the body, but again it is believed that it's primary trigger is genetics, so if you have someone in your family who is suffering from this condition, there is a good chance that you may end up developing it as well.

Causes of Blindness

Blindness is the inability to see. The leading causes of chronic blindness include cataract, glaucoma, age-related degeneration, corneal opacities, diabetic retinopathy, trachoma, and eye conditions in children (eg caused by vitamin A deficiency). Age-related blindness is increasing through the world, as is blindness due to uncontrolled diabetes.
What Causes Blindness?

Vision problems can develop before a baby is born. Sometimes, parts of the eyes do not form the way they should. A kid's eyes may look fine, but the brain has trouble processing the information they send. The optic nerve sends pictures to the brain, so if the nerve does not form correctly, the baby's brain will not receive the messages needed for sight. Blindness can be genetic or inherited, which means that this problem gets passed down to a kid from parents through genes.
Blindness has many causes. In the United States, the leading causes are diabetes, glaucoma, maculardegeneration, and accidents (such as chemical burns or injuries from cords, fishing hooks, fireworks, racket balls, and similar objects). Worldwide, the leading causes of blindness are cataracts, river blindness, leprosy, and vitamin A deficiency.
Can it be invented?

Having an eye test at least every two years can help to detect problems that may need treatment before any permanent damage has been done. Some conditions, such as glaucoma and cataracts, can be rated to help preserve vision. It's important to wear protective eyeware in situations where accidental eye damage may occur, for example, at work, when playing sport or doing diy
Symptoms:

Symptoms vary from person to person, but may include: Trouble seeing colors and the brightness of colors in the usual way.Inability to tell the difference between shades of the same or similar colors. Often, the symptoms may be so mild that some people do not know they are color blind. A parent may notice signs of color blindness when a child is learning his or her colors.
Conditions degenerate further, as an armed clique gains control over food deliveries, subjugating their fellow internees and exposing them to rape and deprivation. Faced with starvation, internees do battle and burn down the asylum, only to find that the army has abandoned the asylum, after which the protagonists join the throngs of near helpless blind people outside who wander the devastated city and fight one another to survive.

Currently, there is no cure for glaucoma, but treatment can control the progress of the disease. The primary goal of treatment is to prevent further damage to the eye by lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) and to extremely prevent blindness. Treatment of glaucoma may include medications, surgery, or a combination of medication and surgery.

Infections of a Surgical Wound

Wounds typically break the continuity of the skin and permit organizations to have access to tissues and cause infection.

The first thing that you might want answered is what are wound infections? By definition a wound infection is a surgical site infection or SSI. There are the following varieties of a surgical site infection or SSI.

– A superficial incisional SSI. This is an infection that involves only skin and subcutaneous tissue.

– A deep incisional SSI. This is an infection that involves deep tissues, such as facial and muscle layers.

– An organ / space SSI. This is an infection that involves a part of the body in organs and spaces other than the incision that was opened or manipulated during an operation.

This, as you can see, is a definition of wound infection which is restricted to infections as a result of a surgical incision. If you take a broader view a more general definition would be infection of a wound which was caused by physical injury of the skin as a result of penetrating trauma from plants, animals, guns, knives or other objects.

In a hospital one of the most commonly acquired infections are infections forming in surgical wounds. These are also known to be a cause of morbidity and mortality.

The next question that might come to your mind is what causes wound infections?

In simple terms an infection in a wound is the result of deposition and multiplication of microorganisms in the surgical site of a suspect host. There are various ways in which microorganisms can find their way into wounds. These include:

– Through direct contact. Here germs are transferred from surgical equipments or the hands of the surgeons or nurses to the wound.

– Via airborne dispersal. Micro organisms are deposited by the surrounding contaminated air.

– Self-pollution. This is a result of migration of the patient's own endogenous flora. These are present on the skin, mucous membranes or gastrointestinal tract to the surgical site.

The organisms that are mostly most commonly associated with wound infections include Staphylococcus aureus / MRSA, Streptococcus pyogenes, Enterococci and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

To be categorized as a surgical wound infection some symptoms are as follows:

– Infection should occur within thirty days of the operation.

– There is purulent discharge from the site of the surgery.

– There is a purulent discharge from the wound or from the drain placed in wound.

– There are organizations found in the aseptically acquired wound culture.

Hair Regrowth in Alopecia Areata

One of the many causes of hair loss is alopecia areata. This is an autoimmune disorder. This causes the immune system to attack the hair follicles, making the hair fall out. This can be quite troubling for many people. There are various treatments that can be made to help with hair regrowth in alopecia areata. Knowing these treatments and how much results you can expect can make the process a lot easier on you.

There are several different treatments to aid hair regrowth in alopecia areata. One of the many is creams that go on your scalp. These can help you regrow new hair and may even be able to cut down on the amount of hair that is lost. Scalp injections, such as cortisone have also been found to help. Cortisone can have lasting side effects so it is important to understand all of the pros and cons before going this. Another treatment is drugs, such as immune suppressing drugs. These drugs can be very beneficial because they will lower your immune system that is killing your hair. With this it is important to keep in mind that suppressing your immune system means that your body will not be able to fight off infection as well. This means that you will be more prone to getting sick. Serious illnesses and sustained high fevers can also lead to hair loss. These are just things to keep in mind.

Knowing what to expect from hair regrowth with alopecia areata is important as well. You may find that the treatment you are using is working and you have regained most of your hair. The only thing you must keep in mind is that autoimmune disorders tend to go through cycles of flare ups. This means that your hair loss treatment can be going fine and then one day you start to notice that you are losing your hair again. This could just be a flare up, but it can also be a serious medical problem. This means that you should see your doctor as soon as possible to get the problem checked out to make sure it is just a flare up. If it is, your doctor may be able to help you find a treatment that will add an exra punch to your hair loss treatment.

Hair regrowth in alopecia areata can seem like a constant battle. There is no cure for autoimmune disorders at this time, only ways to suppress them. This means that it will be something you will battle for the rest of your life. However there are many treatments available and many specialists that you can see. Your specialist can fully explain this disorder to you. He or she can answer all your questions about how treatment works. Your doctor will also be the one that will prescribe you treatments to help with this. As long as you keep yourself healthy and keep working towards getting your hair back, hair regrowth in alopecia areata can be very attainable.

Honey For Horses – For First Aid? Yes!

Are there effective natural first aid remedies available for horses? Yes there are.

UMF manuka honey – ever gaining in popularity for its effectiveness on people – also makes a great natural first aid treatment for your horses.

Cuts, scratches, wounds, all things that horses tend to get from time to time. On humans there has been a growing amount of research, university, clinical and anecdotal, of how UMF® manuka honey is effective in treating infected wounds, making them sterile, and aiding healing. The same natural antibacterial properties it contains can also have a positive impact on animals.

What is UMF® Manuka Honey?

A unique honey from New Zealand that research shows has extra antibacterial properties. There are now specialist sterilised versions of it aimed at external wound use. Main attributes include providing antibacterial barrier protection, a moist wound healing environment, osmotic action resulting in odour control and reduction in wound fluid, and helping with growth of new tissue.

There is unfortunately a downside to using honey – it’s sticky – but if you can deal with that minor aspect, then this is a great natural remedy that actually has some proper research supporting it”.

It is important to remember not all manuka honey is the same, as a naturally occurring product, it does come with natural variation. The UMF® trademark is there for consumer protection for them to know they are getting honey that has been properly tested and measured for its antibacterial property.

After applying the honey to a wound on your horse, the best thing to do is place a dressing over top of it (use as non-absorbent a dressing as possible – you don’t want to draw too much honey away from the wound). This is mostly to stop the horse, or another horse, from licking the honey off. But don’t worry if they do still end up licking it – unlike some other products there are no chemicals or other things in it, it is still just pure honey.

You can make use of the jars of UMF® Manuka Honey that have a rating of 10+ or higher, although there are also now options with this honey in sterilised form in tubes, specifically aimed at external wound use, and potentially easier to apply. There are even ready made dressings with it too.

The use of this particular type of honey for healing wounds is supported by a growing amount of university and clinical trial research (focused on humans but applicable to horses), that does make it an effective first aid remedy for cuts and wounds. And there is growing anecdotal reports of people successfully using it on animals.

Sleep Apnea Surgery

Sleep apnea (apnea from the Greek, meaning "without breath") is a sleep disorder characterized by frequent pauses in breathing during sleep. There are three types of sleep apnea, obstructive, central and mixed. Obstructive is the most common, it is caused by anatomical blockage of the airway, and as such can often be treated by sleep apnea surgery.

Sleep apnea surgery for obstructive sleep apnea consist of several different types of procedures:

1. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty or UPPP, is the most common sleep apnea surgery for adults. The procedure enlarges the airway by removing or shortening the uvula, (tissue that hangs from the roof of the mouth at the back of the throat). The tonsils and adenoids, if present, are also removed as well as part of the soft palate (roof of the mouth).

2. Tonsillectomy and / or adenoidectomy is a sleep apnea surgery that removes the tonsils and / or the adenoids, often the first treatment option for children because enlarged tonsils and adenoids are usually the cause of their sleep apnea.

3. Tracheotomy creates a hole in the windpipe (trachea), and a tube is placed in the hole to allow air in. This sleep apnea surgery, the most effective, is usually reserved for serious apnea sufferers when other treatments have failed. The site around the tube must be cleaned daily to prevent infection.

4. Septoplasy is a sleep apnea surgery that straightens a crooked septum (the partition between the nasal cavities).

5. Laser midline glossectomy and lingualplasty are types of sleep apnea surgery that remove a portion of the tongue.

6. Maxillomandibular osteotomy or enhancement (MMO or MMA) and two-part inferior sagittal mandibular osteotomy. are types of sleep apnea surgery which help enlarge the airway by moving the mandible (jaw) forward These surgeries have high success rates, but last several hours, have a significant recovery period, and potential complications.

7. A relatively new procedure for sleep apnea surgery, performed in the physician's office, is radio frequency ablation (RFTA), trade name SomnoplastyTM. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1998, it shrinks the size of the tongue and / or palate. Multiple treatments may be required, and can be used together with other sleep apnea treatments.

8. The tongue suspension procedure (trade name Repose) is a different sleep apnea surgery procedure. Approved by the FDA in February 1998, this sleep apnea surgery is intended to keep the tongue from falling back over the airway by inserting a small screw into the lower jawbone and stitches below the tongue. Usually performed in conjunction with other procedures, this surgery is potentially reversible. No studies, however, on the long-term success are available, and little clinical data have been published to demonstrate the procedure's effectiveness.

When considering sleep apnea surgery, be aware that effectiveness varies from person to person. Physicians who perform sleep apnea surgery are most commonly otolaryngologists (specializing in the ears, nose, and throat) and oral and maxillofacial surgeons. References to a surgeon may be obtained through your family physician or through a sleep center.

Diabetes and Wound Healing Woes

Diabetes is a disease the effects the body's ability to process glucose. Either the pancreas stops producing insulin, as in Type 1 Diabetes, or the body becomes resistant to its own insulin, as in Type 2 Diabetes. In either case, sustained damage can be done to the cells and tissues of the body due to prolonged elevation of the blood glucose levels.

There are many negative side effects that can happen as a result of elevated blood glucose levels. These side effects include poor circulation, micro-vascular damage, damage to the eyes, kidney damage and increased likelihood of heart disease and strokes. Many complications can also arise for diabetics because their bodies have a very hard time with wound healing.

Wound healing is a major health issue for diabetics. Because of elevated glucose levels and a compromised immune system, the diabetic body has a very hard time fighting infections. This becomes a vicious cycle, since infections raise blood glucose levels, making it harder over time for the diabetic body to heal. One of the reasons amputations are so common among the diabetic population is precisely because fighting infection and wound healing is such a challenge for diabetics.

In order to assist with wound healing, diabetics should consider taking all natural oral supplements in addition to insulin and / or other prescribed medications. Supplements containing SOD / Gliadin have proven to be effective in assisting with the wound healing process. SOD / Gliadin has been shown in numerous studies to decrease oxidative stress under extreme duress, reduce lactic acid blood concentration during and after exercise, enhance the immune system, and have a general anti-inflammatory effect while functioning through a nitrous oxide (NO) pathway .

While a healthy diet and exercise can greatly help regulate blood glucose levels and minimize the risk for diabetic complications, they will not reverse the damage already made to cells and tissues by elevated blood glucose levels. For this reason, all those with diabetes or at risk for diabetes should look into natural herbs and supplements as a way of helping their bodies reverse the negative effects of diabetes.

Why Is Public Health A Controversial Issue?

Attempts to resist any change that will directly or indirectly investve spending public money are challenged by the opposition group. For instance the drug regiments introduce in the mid-1990s that are capable of controlling the damage HIV / AIDS virus wreaks in the immune system was costing an average of $ 10,500 for a year's supply. Often times when public health makes their recommendation for ways of preventing and controlling sexually transmitted diseases, government and businesses have an obligation to determine the cause and effect that the recommendation will have on the economy for its affordability and the effect it may have on the general economy.

Politics plays a very prominent role in how public health responds to sexually transmitted diseases. It plays an important role because some politicians will not be willing and open to bring up their constituents any expensive public health measures that would impose additional hardship to his constituents. Consequently, passing such bills will mean condemning themselves their constituents vote during elections. These controversies are in part what they are due according to those who pay for the public health measures are not the ones that benefit from it; if bills are not sponsored and pass by the legislators then there is no funding which affects heavily on how public health responds to situations especially those of sexually transmitted diseases like STDs and HIV / AIDS. Another way politics play an important role could be seen when President Bush forces the center for the disease control to change an effective sex education which involves the use of condoms in preventing the spread of HIV / AIDS with a false data of condom failure rates.

US constitution weighs heavily on individuals liberty and as such every decision, be it for the sake of public health or justice must put into consideration the individuals liberty before the public's interest which is why Beauchamp's arguments in favor of limiting individual's liberty for the common good is consistent with his view of public health as a social justice. Although we are made to believe that the value of an individual's liberty may be more important than the interest of the public health, and safety, this only applies to the certain issues but not in all situations. The government will go along with public health recommendations. Even if it infringes on an individual's liberty if there is no controversies with such recommendations.

Religion and morals with regards to the sexually transmitted diseases particularly the HIV / AIDS was fulminated by the fundamentalist preachers and conservative legislators as God's punishment for abominable behavior and that people with HIV / AIDS deserved their fate. If half of those resources resources fund the public health issues still believe the above statement, then it will certainly affect the role that public health plays in responding to the prevention and control of diseases such as STD and HIV / AIDS.

Challenges and controversies that exist for HIV / AIDS outside United States include funding treatment for those living with HIV / AIDS. Funding is needed to train more medical staff, avoid drug shortages, combine HIV / AIDS care with care for other health problems, reduce HIV stigma and discrimination and make sure that more people use HIV / AIDS counseling and testing services.

Other challenges include the moral and religious issues in educating people on how to control and prevent sexually transmitted infections in some countries. For example, in some cultures discussion of HIV / AIDS is perceiving as a taboo and are not welcome for public discussion.

Market Justice emphasizes on individual responsibility and obligation. This line of thought prevails fair distribution of the burdens and benefits of society. While Social Justice infers that distribution of wealth should be a fundamental rights to all strata of income levels. These ideologies are relevant in the sense that individuals that are successful in the society have the resources to fund the HIV / AIDS disease than the less unfortunate members of the society.

Political interference has played an important role in this issue because some politicians have used this opportunity to advance their political ideologies. For example, Bush administration was opposed to programs that promote condoms but privileges programs that emphasize on effectiveness of instability.

Economics, politics, the value of individual liberty, religion, and morals all play a huge role on how public health responds to the prevention and control of sexually transmitted disease, including HIV / AIDS. These diseases affect most of the public health and they seek the government financially for treatment. The government has to budget money to spend on those infected by these diseases. Each segment of the government's economics is affected. They have to create clinics, hire qualified staff, and provide money grants to support these places. Most of the public health clinics are free and provide services to those who have no insurance. The financial support for STDS has been a strain on the government and continues to be due to the stabilization of these diseases.

For the prevention of STDS, politics has significantly been involved in the intervention in public health. For example, according to the CDC doctors were recommended to do routinely HIV-testing to many of their patients. This happened especially to those who were asking for STD testing, those who may have symptoms of tuberculosis, or pregnant woman coming in for their routine visits. Furthermore, these actions are a progress in the government's implementation in the wellbeing of the public health. However, it is still controversial because an individual's market justice can be violated. They still have the right to opt out of this recommendation.

The value of individual liberty represents the choice by people to accept support through public health. In the case of support from STDS, individuals have the choice to be treated and receive information educating them on prevention. The government can intervene by providing them treatment but also protection to promote safe sex. They also intervene by providing laws that mandate individuals to be reported the health department about those who are infected by HIV / AIDS. This can become controversial in the fact that those who are infected with the disease rights to privacy can be taken away. However, there goal is to make sure that everyone is protected and government policies on public health are implemented.

Religion and morals have similar views when it comes to the topic of HIV / AIDS. They do not support any investments made to do research and find cures for the disease. While the government provides prevention and protection through education by distributing condoms in clinics, religious clergy are against this. They believe in absence and use the Bible to support their ideologies. They also do not believe schools should discuss ways of protection from diseases to students. Here, this will provide reasons for them to engage in sexual activity.

HIV / AIDS is a global pandemic that continues to spread to every part of the world. Many people in other countries still are not educated on ways to protect themselves and receive treatment. Condoms are not easily available as it is in the United States to be protected from these diseases. Many people do not even know they have it and continue to spread it amongst each other. Funding for education and prevention continues to remain the number one challenge for these countries.

The government in each country has to take accountability for their citizens and seek help from first-world countries that can aid in assistance. If they can invest money into mass communication to promote HIV / AIDS prevention then this can allow people to know how they can take initiative in their own health. Once they are informed it is up to an individual to protect themselves. The government can not force people because their market and social justice could be violated. They can only continue to provide resources and hopefully make a difference to lessen the spread of HIV / AIDS.

Alopecia in Men and Women Explained

My friend's 28- and 24-year old sons both have hair problems. The former has begun to lose his hair, while his younger brother is developing round, bald spots on his head. At such early age, one wonders which really causes hair loss, or baldness, and if there's anything that can be done to prevent it.

Hair loss – known as alopecia in the medical field – assumes different forms. In men, the most common pattern is the one in which hair starts to thin at the crown and the hairline begins to diminish. The exact sequence of this typical male-pattern hair loss goes this way: The hairline starts to recede at the forehead, and then at the temples and crown. In the end, the bare areas merge and only a fringe of hair is left at the back of the head and around the ears. This form is chiefly genetic in origin; it is primed by the presence of androgens (male hormones).

It is widely understood that one loser scalp hair as he or she gets older. It is likewise generally known that the tendency of some men or women to begin losing hair at an early age, and at a reliably fast rate, is hereditary.

The particular case of my friend's younger son is medically termed alopecia areata. This condition is characterized by the occurrence of hair loss in patches that produces a totally bare area encircled by normal hair growth. A number of scientific researchers point to the basic cause of this type of alopecia as being both genetic and immunological.

In women, abnormal loss of hair may happen temporarily after childbirth; or it may be the result of certain infections, ringworm, or even diabetes. While women do not usually suffer from total hair loss, their hair often thins as they get older. One of the usual contributing factors in alopecia in women is the hormonal changes that take place during the "change of life" (menopause).

Another type of the condition in women is referred to as traction alopecia. This form is associated with such hair styles – as ponytails – in which the hair is folded tautly away from the scalp. Excessive hair brushing and the use of rollers for an extended period are possible causes of this type of alopecia, too.

It is important that the person fully understands his or her particular hair-loss condition, especially when considering going through certain medical treatment processes or using prescription drugs. Can Measles Vaccine Cause Autism?

This has been a wrenching issue for many families who are convinced that measles (MMR vaccine) or other vaccinations have caused their children to develop autism. Many of them have bought redress in the court system or in the National Vaccine Injury Compensation System (VICP), which was established to compensate individuals who have been harmed by vaccinations without formal litigation. As rare as these autism-vaccine associations are, they have been reportedly reported in the press and generate understandable sympathetic from the public.

At this point, there is no scientific evidence that any vaccine causes autism. Indeed, the VICP, which requires a lower standard of proof than in a traditional courtroom, recently ruled in 3 cases that the vaccines were innocent. While current medical knowledge is never the last word, for now we must rely upon science to govern our decisions.

Every physician and health care expert in this country and beyond recommends measles vaccinations in the strongest terms. Measles is highly contagious and can lead to deafness, seizures and permanent brain injury. It is a preventable disease.

It is particularly critical that international travelers are up-to-date on measles vaccines and other routine travel vaccinations as there have been several measles outbreaks this year all over the world. In addition, if a traveler contracts measles abroad, then he can transmit it to others at home when he returns. Consult with a travel doctor before departure to determine if you need a booster shot.

While every vaccine, including measures, has potential side-effects, these are rare events. Health experts strongly advise that the risks of harm from routine vaccinations are much less than the risks of not having immunization to various communicable diseases.

Autism is a mysterious and serious illness. We all hope that medical research will lead to understanding the cause of this disease. So far, the verdict on the measles vaccine in the case of MMR vs Autism is not guilty.

Tips to Get Social Security Disability Benefits

It's become common knowledge that, while Social Security Disability benefits can be a life-saver for many people, they can be difficult to qualify for. Some people who are in dire need of assistance avoid filing an application because they're afraid they will not be able to fill it out correctly, will not have the right or enough evidence of their disability, or just because they assume they ' ll be denied. Working with disability attorneys can help simplify the process, but there's not much that can be done to speed it up once the application if filed.

Is the Social Security Disability Application Process Being Improved?

Fortunately, the Social Security Administration recently informed a success that bodes well for future applicants. For the first time in 10 years, since 1999, the SSA has made progress with their backed up cases and ended the year with fewer disability earings pending than in the prior year. Their fiscal year 2009 ended with 722,822 hearsings pending – almost 40,000 less than they had at the start of the year.

In a time when many baby-boomers are facing retirement age, some feared that strain on the SSA. Common concerns included the Social Security Administration running out of money, with none left for Social Security Disability cases, and that the agency would become so bogged down with cases and applications that it would be impossible to review cases in a timely manner. Some would say that the second fear came to fruition.

How Long Does It Really Take to be Approved for Social Security Disability?

Applicants are warned that it may take 3-5 months to receive a decision on their initial application. Over 60% of people are initially denied benefits, and then file for Social Security reconsideration within 60 days. The state has 90 days to review that request. If denied at that point, applicants must request a hearing in front of an Administrative Law Judge. A request for a hearing might not get applicants on the docket for up to two years. Adding up all that wait time is pretty scary – applicants awaiting a SSI appeal might be waiting 3+ years for a final decision on whether or not they'll qualify for Social Security Disability.

This recent news, of the Social Security Administration beginning to work through their backed up cases, is promising. The SSA also announced that their average processing time for these cases improved from 514 days in FY 2008 to 491 in FY 2009. While that's not a remarkable achievement, it is a step in the right direction, and hopefully a sign that the Social Security Administration is going to continue to improve.

What Can Be Done to Streamline the Social Security Disability Application Process?

For those who are disabled and unable to work and perform typical daily tasks, 491 days to a decision is still way, way too long of a wait. It's important to provide as complete an application as possible when first applying in order to help streamline the process. Disability lawyers are a big help in this regard – their experience allows them to quickly identify any areas of the application that might halt it's progress. They'll be able to advise applicants of what kinds of information the application is missing, as well as help them work with medical professionals to access the necessary evidence to support their claims.
