Does My Dog Have Glaucoma?

While Glaucoma is an extremely serious illness, it does not usually happen in dogs too much. Most of the time blindness in dogs happens from an accident, although there are those moments when Glaucoma happens due to genetic issues. When genetics are the cause, this is called primary Glaucoma. There are some breeds that are more genetically inclinated to catch Glaucoma, but a dog can get it because of eye disease, cataracts, cancer, or even eye infection. When it is caused by any of these issues it will be considered secondary Glaucoma. If dogs get Glaucoma, they can go blind quite quicklyly. Care should be given if you notice any of these issues.

Most of the time a dog will get Glaucoma in just one eye. The pressure comes from the aqueous humor fluid that is being built up constantly in the front part of the eye. When this happens the dog will eventually lose sight in that eye, but will adjust to seeing with the good eye. Because of this, it is difficult for the owner to realize the dog is having sight issues as they are still getting around quite well. This will also cause the dog pain, which they have no way of telling you about.

When a dog has been diagnosed with Glaucoma it becomes much harder to treat than if contracted by a human. Humans will take eye drops to help relieve the pressure whereas dogs have a hard time squeezing the bottle, so you have to do it for them. If you have never tried to give a dog eye drops before, it can be quite a difficult feat. Because of this, surgery will more than likely be required to release the pressure. Unfortunately, up to one third of dogs will have to have more than one surgery for their Glaucoma issues.

While Glaucoma in dogs is rarely detected before it's too late, there are ways of catching it before it's too serious. If you notice your dog favoring one eye, or see it constantly watering, you should check with your vet. If your vet catches the Glaucoma before it gets too serious, there is a good chance that your dog will only require one surgery. While your dog has no way of telling you that their eyes are bothering them, you have to be on your toes and check from time to time on your own.

Vitamin D and Steroids

Steroids are frequently prescribed by doctors for a variety of clinical disorders such as asthma, low back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, MS, and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. Quite often, patients stay on steroids for a long duration. And end up experiencing serious side-effects, which are sometimes even worse than the original disease, such as avascular necrosis of hip or shoulder, serious infections, diabetes, high blood pressure, glaucoma, macular edema, proximal myopathy, severe osteoporosis which can lead to fragility fractures.

Steroids and Vitamin D

While there are several mechanisms how stereotypes can cause their side-effects, vitamin D deficiency appears to be a major pathway. Steroids antagonize the beneficial effects of vitamin D. For example, in bone, vitamin D enhancements bone formation by stimulating osteoblasts, increasing calcium absorption from intestines and preventing secondary hyperparathyroidism. Steroids do exactly the opposite: they have inhibitory effect on osteoblasts, decrease calcium absorption from intestines, increase calcium wasting from kidneys and cause secondary hyperparathyroidism. In this way steroids cause a rapid bone loss (osteoporosis).

In addition, Vitamin D boosts up immune system whereas steroids suppress it. Vitamin D reduces blood pressure whereas steroids increase it. Vitamin D reduces insulin resistance whereas steroids increase it. Vitamin D builds up muscles whereas steroids cause myopathy.

It is pretty obvious that steroids antagonize the effects of vitamin D.

What is the mechanism?

One mechanism is that steroids alter the vitamin D receptor. Steroids also cause obesity, and consequentially, decrease the available circulating vitamin D. There could be other mechanisms as well.

From a clinical point, steroids rob you off the beneficial effects of Hormone D in as little as 5 days. Therefore, I recommend my patients to double the dose of vitamin D while they go on steroids, and pay close attention to their serum and urine calcium. Salt restriction to 3 grams per day and use of a thiazide diuretic can reduce the urine calcium wasting.

"Prevention is better than cure" is your best bet when it comes to steroid-induced osteoporosis because no drug available currently can effectively treat this type of osteoporosis.

Tamiflu – How Does Tamiflu Compare To Other Anti Flu Medications?

There are hardly any medicines that are available for treating flu. Among these Tamiflu is the only medication that is good in treating flu. Here I will be covering some of the symptoms of the flu. So this will tell you when you should take Tamiflu and what other medications are available for the flu.

Flu Symptoms

The symptoms for the flu are a sore throat. This is the beginning of the chapter called the flu. This may be either the common flu or the on set of the bird flu. But the sore throat will worsen to a condition where by you will know this is not just a sore throat but something worse than that. It is cobbled in the second chapter by high fever ranging to temperatures above a hundred degree Fahrenheit. And along with this as a sub section to the second chapter of the flu you will be having muscular pains, weakness, loss of appetite and a pain in the chest.

Introduction of Flu shot

It caused havoc and the result was that what we faced in the 1918’s. But a vaccine when the flu is on you will not be much of an effect. It had to be taken well before you are affected by the flu. The tablets available around that time were Amantadine and Rimantdine. Both these drugs had to be consumed as tablets. These drugs acted like this. They could stop the flu virus from duplicating itself after it had been inside the human cells. They could not mutate and form a group with which they could attack the body. But there were limitations for the drugs Amantadine and Rimantdine. They were effective against only Type ‘A’ influenza causing viruses. They were ineffective against the type “B” influenza virus. For this an alternative medicine was to be conjured.

New drugs: Tamiflu and Relenza

It was at the turn of this century that new drugs like Tamiflu and Relenza were formulated. They were effective against both the type “A” and the type “B” influenza causing viruses. They belonged to a separate class of medicines called the neuraminidase inhibitors. Tamiflu contained the drug Oseltamivir and Relenza was made of Zanamivir. Both these drugs worked in a similar way. They too could stop the particles of the virus from being released in to the human cells. This limited the spread of the infection.

The medicine Tamiflu is taken as a pill. It comes in the form of a capsule, a yellow grey capsule with seventy five milligram of the drug encompassed in it. There is another form also in which Tamiflu s supplied, it is the suspension form. This suspension form is for children. They are given the medication as per their weight. For a child weighing less than 33 pounds he / she are given thirty milligrams of the medication. All weight categories the medication is given in proper proportions.

Relenza is a drug that required an inhaler to take the drug. This drug is directly inhaled into the lungs. This drug was approved by the FDA at around the same time Tamiflu was approved. However, people who suffered from asthma and other respiratory related diseases faced fatalities after inhaling this drug. Experts in the field have weighed the options against the risk involved when taking this inhalation prescription drug. They have justified the risk involved against the risk of infection.

Tamiflu has been considered too expensive against the older drugs.

Symptoms can include fever, depression, loss of appetite, coughing and tender abdomen. If left untreated, complications such as jaundice, corneal edema, and bleeding disorders may occur.

Canine distemper virus is spread through aerosol droplets, and contact with infected bodily fluids. The infection tends to affect the lymphoid, epithelial, and nervous tissues. This generally leads to problems with lymphoid depletion, interstitial pneumonia, encephalitis, and hyperkeratosis of foot pads. The mortality rate depends on the dogs' immunity. For this reason, vaccination is extremely important.

Myopia Causes… Is it Really the Eye?

I started my last article titled “High Myopia – What Causes Myopia?” with saying that if you are easily offended by the truth, you better stop reading, and it applies for this article even more…

If you can’t face the truth about your myopia causes and what’s really needed to improve your vision, stop right here. If you can handle it, buckle up, you are in for a ride!

The truth is that the cause for myopia is not in your eyes at all. Your eye problem is merely a symptom of the cause. The real cause is psychological. And there are few psychological reasons, which we will cover over a serious of articles.

Today we start with my favorite, with the reason why so many younger people, mid to late teens, early twenties, get myopia. It is the fear of the future.

“What a load of B.S.”, I hear many say, “my optometrist says it has to do with the shape of my lens”, others might be thinking, but before you dismiss anything here, keep an open mind and let’s have a look on how it all belongs together.

Myopia Causes From A Different Perspective

You see, our mind is so strong, that it can literally cause us to black out what we don’t want to see. In our mid to late teens or early twenties we are faced with the question what we want or should do with the rest of our life. But the concept of days in relationship to a life-time can’t be understood as yet, that only comes around by the time we are 40 – 50 years old (see “The Continuum Concept” by Jean Liedloff, p 43). How should we understand what we want to do every day of our life?

So when we are faced with the question what to do for the rest of our life, we get scared, and I mean real scared. But what does that have to do with myopia causes? Great question, hang in there.

How Does THAT Cause Myopia?

Humans in a state of fear get stressed. So stressed that our muscles become tense and tighten up. Now if that happens in our eye muscles, the muscles flatten out the eyeball, extending it like the zoom on a photo lens, and thereby altering the shape of the lens. The shape of the lens becomes stepper because the eyeball is filled with liquid and when it is squashed together, the extension causes a steeper shape of the lens.

Now putting glasses in front of the stressed eyes doesn’t solve the problem because we are still under stress, in a state of fear, and our eye muscles are still tight as. The glasses only help us to see into the distance, the very distance we didn’t want to see in the first place. So, as strong as our mind is, it just tightens the muscles a bit more, squeezes the eyeball further, and viola there is the next level of myopia, and you need new glasses.

This keeps going until you resolve the underlying reasons. Resolving the underlying reasons is much easier than wearing glasses, totally natural, cheap as chips in comparison to a life-time of paying for glasses, and you and your mind can get rid of myopia easily. Glasses on the other hand won’t cut it, they will just increase the tension over time, worsening your eyesight every so often.

The Solution To Myopia Causes

The way to deal with your psychological causes for myopia is to do natural vision correction. That’s it!

Now the fear of the future is only one possible underlying cause for myopia, there are many more myopia causes, but the concept is always the same. Your mind is putting tension on the eye muscles, which extend the eyeball, and therefore alter the shape of the lens.

You can do something about your myopia causes, and you should, because clear vision without glasses is your birth right. You should be enjoying it every day of your life. There is no reason in the world why you shouldn’t.

Myopia – How Far Can You Really See?

How far can you really see? Simple question, is not it? But I am not talking about seeing with your eyes. I think even blind people can see things in their mind, but I am not going to dwell too much on that, but instead I hope to take you beyond your natural inclinations to think deeply on a much more interesting topic.

In his highly acclaimed book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey presents strong lessons in personal change.

In the 2nd habit, the author suggests to begin with the end in mind. What it all means is to begin with the image of the end of your life as the frame of reference by which everything else is measured.

Covey illustrates the concept with a visualization exercise asking you to imagine that at the end of your life, you are able to listen to what was being said at your funeral. He further invites you to determine what you would like to hear people say about you as a father, a life partner, a college … kind of life that will make it happen.

The book further went on to suggest developing a personal mission statement, philosophy or credo based on your values ​​and principles that will help you focus on what you want to be (character), and do (contributions and achievements).

All this is based on the theory that all things are created twice and that there is a mental first creation and there is a physical second creation and that management is being efficient by doing things right, while leadership is being effective by doing the right things.

Some people have adopted the principles of this book and have gone on to become highly successful and effective people. There are also countless other people who could not fully implement the principles because they could not bear to change their characters first. Perhaps, their over-inflated egos or impatience has preempted them from achieving what they want. After trying out some of the ideas, they come to realize that the book is not a quick-fix book. They need to change their own way of looking at things, and start to mature from a dependent stage, to an independent stage and then to an interdependent stage before they can really see some substantive results.

What’s Behind the Ear Infection Epidemic in Children?

Frequent ear infections in infants and children are as common as colds that not only create great discomfort for the child, but may cause permanent hearing loss. They are often treated with round after round of antibiotics. Unfortunately, while this antidote seems to manage the problem, it often doesn’t seek to find the real cause behind the infection in the first place.

Many people do not know that ear infections are often caused by acid reflux. As refluxed liquid enters the upper throat, especially while lying down, it can inflame the adenoids causing them to swell. The swollen adenoids can block the passages from the sinuses and Eustachian tube and fluid can build in the sinuses and middle ear.

As acid reflux is also epidemic in our entire population–how can we connect the dots between both ear infections and this digestive disorder? How can we find what’s behind both of these problems and reach a true solution?

The first thing to understand is that acid reflux is most often the result of an abnormal overgrowth of Candida, or yeast, in the stomach, when the PH of the stomach is low. This causes digestion to slow down and foods to ferment. The Candida also attaches itself to the muscles of the esophageal sphincter causing them to become paralyzed. In reflux, the pressure of the fermentation gases push the acid up through the weakened esophageal sphincter muscles into the throat.

Today, acid reflux is so prevalent because people are no longer eating foods that support good digestion and healthy bacterial flora. Historically, people consumed a wealth of cultured and lacto-fermented drinks like kefir and yogurt from whole raw milk, beet kvass and kombucha, and cultured vegetables like homemade sauerkraut, pickled beets and Kimchee. These high-enzyme, probiotic foods kept yeast and other bacteria in check as well as helped to maintain proper stomach acidity and gut flora–all necessary for good digestion.

Gut flora is passed on to a child during its passage in birth through the birth canal. When the mother has poor gut flora, the child will inherit the same problem and suffer the health consequences of poor digestion and a tendency towards both acid reflux and frequent ear infections because of this deficiency. Therefore, through a familial inheritance, poor health is passed on to the next generation.

As Hippocrates said, “All disease begins in the gut,” we can see that both ear infections and acid reflux and also many of our epidemic health problems must be coming from a lack of foods necessary to promote good digestion. We must return to eating the high-enzyme, probiotic rich foods that our ancestors ate and remove the difficult-to-digest modern breads, crackers, processed foods and sugar that can cause a Candida overgrowth. We can also benefit from adding nutrient-dense, old-fashioned foods like bone broth soups and meats, poultry, eggs and dairy from pastured animals as well as wild-caught fish in place of the foods that upset normal digestion.

Treating the symptoms of ear infections with antibiotics is like trying to bail the water from a sinking ship, one bucket at a time! When we work towards solving the reason behind our epidemics, we will insure the future of the health of generations to come.

A Case For Whole Food Supplements

The Standard American Diet (SAD) is lacking in many vital nutritional components. Being largely composed of prepackaged, convenience foods with few naturally grown food products; this diet has contributed to an epidemic of not only obesity but also extreme nutritional deficiency. While many commercially available vitamin and mineral supplements exist, they are manufactured in an artificial way that reduces bioavailability and promotes chemical contamination. As Americans are not likely to return to eating home grown food directly from their garden, the solution to the nutritional deficiency of America can be found in Whole Food Supplements which are vitamin, mineral and phytonutrient rich products made from actual food concentrates.

The Problem with the Standard American Diet

In the first part of the 1900’s most Americans ate a healthy, whole food diet because they had no choice. All food was grown either by the family or obtained from immediately local sources. America in the 1900’s was a largely agrarian society with most people living in rural areas and able to grow their own food. During the last century, a massive migration to urban areas has occurred. This has meant that even if one has the desire, most people no longer have the ability to produce self grown food. Either because there is no land or because many do not know how, very few people have a garden and even fewer produce protein in the form of dairy products and animal husbandry.

In spite of this developing migration, during World War II, families were encouraged to have a “victory garden”. This was not to ensure that Americans had a great diet but actually to ensure that American families could feed themselves at all, while allowing most of commercial food production to be sent to the troops overseas. That was the last period in history that America got most of their nutrition from locally grown food.

Beginning around the 1950’s, Americans did begin to recognize the value of vitamins and minerals within their diet. This was discovered because more and more pre-prepared, highly processed food products became available and nutritional deficiencies began to emerge.

After the end of World War II, many families became two-income families. In addition, many more single parents are now raising children by themselves. This means that in most homes, all of the adults present in any one household are likely employed outside of the home full-time leaving little time for food preparation alone much less any time for food production. America has become a convenience food nation consuming much of the diet from unnatural food sources.

Prepackaged and easy to prepare food products are just that, food “products”. Though they may contain carbohydrates, proteins, fats and some “essential” nutrients, they are not real food. The entire food supply chain is rife with contamination and chemical processing and many Americans are unaware of how little nutritional value the food that they consume every day contains. So much publicity and education has focused on the so called food pyramid. The governmental and educational agencies that have devised the perfect American diet have never truly addressed the lack of nutrients, other than the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of basic vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin A, Vitamin D and Calcium.

While these RDA levels of vitamin and mineral consumption may be an absolute bottom line essential to avoid obvious diseases of deficiency such as scurvy or rickets, they are hardly adequate and do not reflect but a small portion of the nutrients contained in whole food, necessary for promotion of health and prevention of disease.

A Crisis in America: Obesity and Other Diseases in the Face of Malnutrition

The main focus of the American diet in recent years has become reducing fat and increasing carbohydrates in the diet. This stream of thought was intended to reduce the growing epidemic of obesity but over the past 20 years, obesity has risen into numbers that appear to be a crisis for Americans. In fact, over the past 20 years the number of adult Americans who are obese has risen by 60% to an unprecedented level of almost 35% of American adults being considered obese. A much worse situation is that a similar number of approximately 32% of American children qualify as overweight or obese. For the first time in American history, the life expectancy of these children may be lower than that of their parents or grandparents.

This has led to an epidemic of heart disease, diabetes and other weight related problems occurring in record numbers not only in adults but seen in children as young as 18 months of age. Additional diseases that may be related to a lack of appropriate nutrients other than simple vitamins in American diets may include a wide variety of conditions ranging from immune disorders implicated in conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus and Cancer to psychiatric and neurological conditions such as ADHD, Autism and Depression.

Most people believe that obesity occurs simply because people eat too much. While that is true in part, obesity also results from continuously consuming the wrong types of food. In the 1900s when Americans were consuming a largely natural, whole food diet directly from farm to table, obesity was an extremely rare occurrence.

As our diet has changed from an agrarian society’s nutrient rich food supply to the urbanized highly processed, artificial foods, our total food consumption has risen. This is in part because, though the body gets more calories from more food, it is still starved of nutrition causing one to eat even more. In addition, in our sedentary lifestyle our bodies actually need less food than when we lived and worked each day on the farm, yet we still eat more because of lack of proper nutrients, abundance of easily obtained processed food and other psychological conditions such as stress eating. In the end, America has become a nation of people who are obese but still malnourished and disease ridden.

An Attempt to Fix the Problem

The ideal diet truly would be that of returning to whole food “farm to table” eating where families either grow their own food and prepare it within minutes of harvesting or at a minimum obtain locally grown food from the market and prepare it within a day or so of harvesting. In today’s society this is no longer possible. Even when fresh vegetables and fruits are consumed as a large portion of the diet, our nation’s food supply is contaminated by the use of pesticides, herbicides and hormones and much of the nutrient value is lost by transportation of the food crop from thousands of miles away. Food is harvested before it is truly ripe, irradiated, stored cold and transported across states, nations and even oceans before it arrives in our grocery stores as tasteless, substandard, nutrient poor produce.

Many people are attempting to eat only organic, locally grown produce for this reason. While this may be an improvement over the nutritional value of the standard American diet, it is nearly always much more expensive and therefore unaffordable for many and unavailable for others as most markets do not focus on obtaining such products. So this effort, while valiant is still not enough.

The good news about the American nutritional situation is that it is quite easy to fix. Given appropriate nutrition, the human body has an amazing ability to heal itself. Many diseases and conditions caused by overconsumption and malnourishment can be easily corrected by supplementation with whole food nutritional products.

As Americans cannot rely on the food supply to provide adequate nutrition and also cannot count on the source, quality and purity of most commercially available nutritional supplements, the only answer appears to lie in whole food supplementation.

What is a Whole Food Supplement?

Whole food supplements are defined as nutritional supplements derived entirely from food. This is a much more natural and beneficial method of obtaining nutrition from food and herbal supplements alike.

Unfortunately, most commercially available nutritional supplements including vitamins, minerals and herbal products are made completely of single ingredient extracts or worse, artificially synthesized in a lab using chemical processes. While synthesized supplements may in fact provide basic vitamins and minerals known to be vital, artificially prepared products are missing many of the alkaloids, antioxidants and phytochemicals that are thought to play a major role in complete nutrition and disease prevention.

The same is true for herbal supplements and treatments as most commercially available herbal products do provide an extract or synthesized form of the primarily active chemical within the herb, they are still missing many of the synergistic ingredients thought to provide additional benefits of herbal and nutraceutical treatment.

Simply Taking Vitamins isn’t Enough

Vitamins and Minerals are absolutely necessary for life but the RDA is generally both inadequate in its estimate and unattainable through the average American diet.

While many commercially available nutritional supplements are available at every corner, through necessity, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does little to regulate the manufacturing of food supplements such as vitamins, minerals and herbal products. The FDA cannot apparently manage even its’ main tasks of regulation of the pharmaceutical industry and assurance of the safety of the American food supply.

In the last several years, many counterfeit pharmaceutical products have been discovered such as flu medication being sold online, manufactured outside of the United States was found to be gelatin capsules filled with sheetrock particles. In addition Americans have seen case after case of E. Coli and Salmonella contamination of both American and foreign farm crops such as lettuce, tomatoes, onions and peppers enter our grocery stores. Some of these products were even the so called “organic” products, purported to be safer than traditional crops.

Why a Whole Food Supplement

As there is inadequate supervision of the pharmaceutical and food production industries, there is even less of the nutritional supplement market. The average vitamin or nutritional supplement is manufactured using chemical synthesis and heat processing which destroys the nutritional value of the product within. In addition, many commercially available products are manufactured with fillers, additives, preservatives and other dubious chemicals. Whole food supplements are not.

Within the last several years, significant shortcomings have come to light in terms of foreign made food and health products. Many products have proven to be contaminated with not only the known chemicals that are present in the American food supply but also with much more dangerous unknown chemicals that should never enter the manufacturing process. The only way to ensure that this does not happen is to purchase high quality products from a company with a well established reputation for maintaining high standards of manufacturing and purity. As whole food supplements are natural products, it would be optimal if the manufacturer employed practices of sustainability and green policy.

The ideal food supplement manufacturer recognizes that vitamins do not exist in isolation. The nutritional value of whole food is due to the interweaving of the entire spectrum of nutrients with vitamins and minerals acting in a synergistic fashion with hundreds of other plant alkaloids, phytochemicals and enzymes. The cofactors and bioflavonoids such as terpenes and isoflavones present in whole foods and whole food supplements are integral in the process to restore biochemical balance to the body.

This is quite easy to identify when examining the label of a nutritional supplement, vitamin or herbal product. Though the FDA doesn’t do an adequate job of monitoring the food supply or pharmaceutical industry, they have established standards of labeling which include appropriate identification of all ingredients contained in a supplement. Close examination of most regular supplements when compared to whole food supplements will show that most products contain synthetic vitamins, chemicals and filler products while whole food supplements contain natural vitamins and minerals obtained from concentrated food sources such as fruits and vegetables.

Supplements manufactured from whole food sources will contain not only the natural form of vitamins and minerals but also all of the important phytochemicals and phytonutrients important to restoration of nutritional health and prevention of disease derived from whole food concentrates.

Choosing a Quality Supplement

Whole food supplements are nutritional products which have been manufactured directly from food. Food grown in natural conditions is concentrated using carefully designed and conducted cold processing techniques. These methods allow the concentration of the entire spectrum of nutritional value without removing the phytochemicals, alkaloids and other valuable natural substances that ensure adequate nutritional support and help to prevent disease.

When choosing a whole food supplement one should ensure that the product is from a manufacturing company known to have a long standing reputation for quality and experience in whole food processing. The products should be constituted entirely of whole food products which have been refined using cold processing without the nutrient reducing effects of extreme heat, pasteurization and irradiation. They should also be free of artificial filler products and preservative chemicals. The manufacturer should have a process of testing for purity and guarantee of quality and ideally should offer a money back guarantee if one is not satisfied with the product. For the American consumer, optimally an American product will be purchased an in an effort to aid the environment, a company with “green” policies should be chosen to promote sustainability of the food supply.

Specific Nutrient Needs

Vitamin A

Vitamin A and the carotenoids are highly present in many vibrantly colored fruits and vegetables along with fish and animal livers and are essential for:

o proper functioning of the eye and skin including the gastrointestinal tract

o acts as an antioxidant, protecting against cancer and diseases of aging

o important in support of the immune system for protection against viruses and infections of the organ linings of bladder, kidneys, lungs and mucous membranes

o essential for protein utilization

Vitamin A deficiency causes dry hair, skin, eye disorders, fatigue, reproductive difficulties, frequent colds and infections, and skin disorders.

Traditional vitamin supplements will typically contain synthetic Vitamin A Palmitate and/or beta carotene isolate. Whole Food Supplements will contain Vitamin A1, Vitamin A2, retinal, retinoic acid and a number of more the 500 carotenes all of which are precursors to Vitamin A along with essential fatty acid, natural sugars, minerals and other phytonutrients found only in whole food.

Vitamin B Complex

Vitamin B is actually a number of similarly related compounds found in yellow and green fruits and vegetables particularly leafy green and cruciferous vegetables along with nuts, grains, eggs, dairy products and meats and are known to be essential for:

o maintenance of skin, eyes, hair, liver and mouth

o healthy gastrointestinal tract and brain functioning

o coenzymes involved in energy production

o proper functioning of nervous system particularly in the elderly

Specific Vitamin B Deficiencies:

B-1 Thiamine deficiency – Beriberi, canker sores, mental disorders such as dementia, depression and dizziness, fatigue, indigestion, diarrhea, numbness and muscle atropy

B-2 Riboflavin deficiency -mouth sores, cataracts, dermatitis, hair loss, neurological symptoms on skin, light sensitivity, seizures

B-3 Niacin deficiency – pellagra, bad breath, skin and mouth disorders, memory impairment, confusion, depression, muscle weakness

B-5 Pantothenic Acid deficiency – abdominal pains, skin disorders, hair loss, muscle spasms and poor coordination, immune impairment, low blood pressure

B-6 Pyridoxine deficiency – eye, skin and mouth inflammation, mucous membrane disorders, lack of wound healing

B-12 Cyanocobalamin deficiency – pernicious anemia, unsteady gate, dizziness, drowsiness, depression, hallucination headaches, memory loss, tinnitus, spinal cord degeneration

Folic Acid deficiency – certain types of anemia, fatigue, mental disorders, insomnia, diarrhea, spina bifida in developing infant

Traditional Vitamin B supplements will generally contain only the synthetic form of one or more of the B vitamin group, while whole food supplements will contain all of the Vitamin B family along with the added benefits of phytonutrients such as inositols, PABA, biotin and choline derived from concentration of whole foods.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) is found in citrus fruits, berries and green vegetables and is essential for:

o tissue growth and repair

o adrenal gland function

o healthy gums

o production of anti stress hormones and interferon

o absorption of iron in the gastrointestinal system

o metabolism of amino acids and vitamins

o activity as an antioxidant and support of the immune system

Vitamin C deficiency causes Scurvy, poor wound healing, gum disease, edema, weakness, frequent infections, fatigue, and joint pains.

Traditional Vitamin C supplements will have only Ascorbic Acid or Ascorbate, while Whole Food Supplement vitamin C will contain phytonutrients such as rutin, bioflavonoids, tyrosinase, ascorbinogen, vitamin C factors such as J, K and P along with mineral co-factors necessary for vitamin C activity all derived appropriately from whole food.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is present largely in dairy food products but also in fish and fish oils, green leafy vegetables, vegetable oils, egg yolks and sweet potatoes and is necessary for:

o bone and teeth growth and development in children

o muscle performance including skeletal and cardiac muscle

o prevention of bone and tooth loss in elderly

o thyroid and immune system functioning

o normal blood clotting

Vitamin D deficiency includes rickets, osteomalacea, loss of appetite, burning of mouth and throat, diarrhea, insomnia, and visual difficulties.

Most commercial Vitamin D products including prescription formulas will contain only Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) which is less absorbable and more difficult to use but has a longer shelf life than it’s cousin Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) while whole food supplements will contain significant amounts of Vitamin D3 along with many other beneficial phytonutrients in the form of whole food concentrates.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is found in cold pressed vegetable oils, dark green leafy vegetables, beans, nuts and grains and is essential for:

o antioxidant activity important for the prevention of cancer and cardiovascular disease

o circulation and tissue repair

o blood clotting and healing

o skin and hair health

Vitamin E deficiency may result in damage to red blood cells, nerve destruction, infertility, menstrual problems, and neuromuscular disorders.

Traditional vitamin E supplements will generally include only one of the 8 active components of the vitamin E family, alpha-tocopherol. Whole food supplements will contain not only alpha-tocopherol but also the 7 other alpha, beta, gamma and delta forms of both tocopherol and tocotrienol derived from concentrated food.

Calcium

Calcium is vital for the formation of bones and teeth and the maintenance of gums. It is essential for the functioning of all muscular tissue, particularly the heart and participates in cellular functioning in virtually every area of the body. Calcium is highly present in dairy products, meaty and oily fish and green leafy vegetables.

Calcium deficiency can lead to brittle bones, teeth and nails, skin disorders, cardiac disorders such as high blood pressure and heart palpitations, cognitive impairment, hyperactivity and seizure disorders.

Calcium contained in most traditional supplements will contain only calcium carbonate or calcium citrate with the possible addition of Vitamin D or may contain D1-calcium-phosphate which is completely insoluble and cannot be absorbed. Whole Food Supplement calcium products will contain additional nutrients such as amino acids and vitamin C which are necessary for calcium absorption and utilization.

Iron

Iron is essential for the production of hemoglobin which is vital to the supply of oxygen throughout the body. Iron is also important for production of many important enzymes within the body. It can be found in meats, fish, eggs, green leafy vegetables, nuts and grains in large amounts as well as a number of herbs such as alfalfa and milk thistle.

Deficiency of Iron includes symptoms of anemia, weakness and fatigue, hair loss, mouth inflammation, fingernail malformation and mental impairment.

Most commercially available iron supplements will contain iron sulfate or iron gluconate as a singular product or in combination with other vitamins and minerals. Iron is best absorbed in the presence of vitamin C and when consumed as a constituent of a food source. Whole food supplement iron will result in better absorption and less stomach upset as it is derived from whole food.

Magnesium

Magnesium is vital as an enzyme catalyst especially with regard to energy production. It also aids in cellular calcium and potassium uptake which makes it essential for the transmission of muscle and nerve impulses. It can be readily found in many foods especially animal products such as dairy, meat and seafood but also in many fruits and vegetables such as apples, apricots, bananas, whole grains and soy products.

Deficiency of magnesium will cause muscular irritability, mental disorders, chronic fatigue, chronic pain syndromes, depression and pulmonary disorders along with being a factor in hypertension and sudden cardiac death.

Traditionally prepared magnesium supplements will contain only magnesium usually in the form of magnesium chloride or magnesium sulfate while whole food supplements will contain other minerals such as calcium and potassium along with vitamin c and other nutrients from whole food concentrates necessary for the proper absorption and utilization of magnesium.

Zinc

Zinc is important in the growth and function of reproductive organs and may help regulate oil gland activity and prevent acne. It is essential for protein and collagen synthesis and vital to the functioning of a healthy immune system and has been shown to have potent antiviral activity. It plays a major role in wound healing and the sensation of taste and smell. It is also a constituent of many physiological chemicals such as insulin and various enzymes. Zinc is highly present in eggs, fish, beans, meats, mushrooms and many seed such as pumpkin and sunflower seeds.

Deficiency of zinc may result in a loss of taste and smell and may cause the fingernails to become weak and thin. Other signs may include delayed sexual maturation, growth impairment, disorders of sexual organs of both males and females, fatigue, hair loss, slow wound healing and recurrent infections.

Many commercially available supplements will contain either zinc gluconate as a singular product or in combination with other minerals without regard as to the appropriate ratios for optimal absorption and utilization within the body. As whole food supplements are derived from actual food, the appropriate ratios necessary for maximum benefit are already present established by nature.

Unique Benefits of Whole Food Supplements

According to the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), over 70% of Americans do not consume enough whole food products to provide even the RDA of vitamins. While vitamins are necessary for life, ordinary vitamin supplements will not entirely fill the gap. Unlike most commercial dietary supplements which are stand alone chemicals, whole food supplements contain any number of several thousand known and unknown phytonutrients such as:

o Carotenoids

o Polyphenols (Flavonoids)

o Phenols

o Indoles

o Lignans (Phytoestrogens)

o Phytates (Inositols)

o Saponins

o Sulfides and Thiols

o Terpenes

Research has proven these nutrients to be protective against many diseases. Some types of phytonutrients are known to provide such benefits as enhanced immunity, cancer prevention, detoxification and DNA repair.

Carotenoids

The phytonutrient category of carotenoids has been shown to protect against certain types of cancer, optical failure from diseases such as macular degeneration and assist in the prevention of cardiac disease. Carotenoids are partially responsible for the vibrant colors of many fruits and vegetables.

Carotenoids can help prevent vitamin A deficiency by acting as precursors to Vitamin A which assists the body in manufacturing Vitamin A. In addition several carotenoids are known to be anti-oxidants and may protect against diseases of aging and exposure to environmental toxins. Carotenoids may also be a factor in the prevention and treatment of other diseases such as:

o Cancer – including cervical, throat, lung, prostate and skin cancers

o Heart disease – including angina pectoris and congestive heart failure

o Infections – including AIDS, Chlamydia, Candidiasis and pneumonia

o Immune system mediated disorders – including rheumatoid arthritis, and photosensitivity

o Other conditions – such as asthma and osteoarthritis

A balanced formula of carotenoids such as found in whole foods and whole food supplements will be better absorbed than individual supplements as too much of any one carotenoids may inhibit the absorption of others. This is one of the many reasons why whole food supplements are more beneficial than simple vitamin supplementation.

Carotenoids known to be present and beneficial can be found in the following fruits or vegetables:

o alpha carotene – carrots

o beta carotene – green cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, and Brussels sprouts, yellow/orange vegetables such as sweet potatoes, pumpkin and carrots

o beta cryptoxanthin – orange fruits such as mangos, peaches and apricots

o lutein – leafy green vegetables such as turnip greens, collard greens and spinach

o lycopene – red fruits such as watermelon, guava, tomatoes and red grapefruit

o zeaxanthin – green vegetables such as green beans and broccoli, yellow food such as eggs mangos and citrus fruits

Polyphenols

Polyphenols (Flavonoids) are known to be active antioxidants and are thought to be important in preventing diseases caused by oxidative stress such as some cancers and some forms of cardiac disease and some inflammatory processes which cause diseases such as arthritis and other diseases of aging. Some examples of polyphenols found in food products include:

o anthocyanins – red foods such as berries, red cabbage, red grapes

o flavones – celery and parsley

o ellagic acid – berries such as strawberries, blueberries and raspberries

o catechins – tea, wine and chocolate along with other tart foods such as berries and apples

o flavanones – found in citrus fruits

o coumarins – found in grains and grasses such as wheat grass

Phenols

Phenols encompass a number of anti oxidant nutrients such as Resveratrol and are known to be powerful antioxidants. Phenols have proven to be effective in the prevention of age related disorders and many diseases caused in part by oxidative stress such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Phenols are present in purple fruits such as grapes and blueberries along with wine and tea.

Indoles

Indoles are known to aid in hormone production and maintenance of balance. Indoles are also thought to provide cellular protection against cancers such as colon cancer and endometrial cancer along with others. They are largely present in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbages.

Lignans

Lignans (Phytoestrogens) have weak estrogen like activity which is important in the prevention and possible treatment of hormone mediated cancers such as breast, testicular and prostate cancer. They also may block inflammatory processes which may aid in the treatment of diseases such as arthritis and platelet aggregation leading to stroke. Lignans highly present in flax seed and soy products but are also found in other grains such as wheat, barley and oats along with beans and vegetables such as garlic and broccoli.

Inositols

Phytates (Inositols) may help lower blood cholesterol and aid in prevention of mental disorders such as bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression. Inositols and Phytates are present in large amounts in grains, nuts and melon family members such as cantaloupe, squash and cucumbers.

Saponins

Saponins are known to lower cholesterol and may act as an immune booster protecting the body against infections from viruses, bacteria and fungi. They may also provide some protection against heart disease and have proven to be effective in the treatment of cancer. Several anti cancer drugs are based on the saponin molecular structure. Saponins can be found in foods such as asparagus, red onions, alfalfa sprouts, and soybeans.

Thiols

Sulfides and Thiols are vital to the functioning of the cardiovascular system including the smooth muscles of the arteries and arterioles and the linings of both veins and arteries. Thiols have proven instrumental in the development of plaques contributing to atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, myocardial infarction and stroke. Sulfides and thiols are highly present in members of the odiferous Lilly family such as garlic, onion, chives and leeks

Terpenes

Terpenes are thought to protect against cancer and free radical damage which may contribute to diseases of aging such as stroke and alzheimers disease. Terpenes are highly present in foods such as green foods, grain and soy products and also in many herbs such as Gingko biloba.

These phytonutrients are just a few examples of natural molecules known to aid in promotion of health and make the case for the use of Whole Food Supplements. There are thousands more, yet to be identified that are present and beneficial and cannot be synthesized in a lab. Supplementation with isolated vitamins and minerals alone will not solve a nutritional deficiency.

As Americans are unlikely to return to the farm, consumption of a whole food supplement appears to be the only way to actually bridge the nutritional canyon that the American diet has created due to a lifestyle of convenient packaged food that is easy to prepare but sorely deficient in nutritional quality.

Vaccination – 5 Things to Consider Before Vaccinating Your Children

One of the most important decisions you will make
One of the most important decisions you will make that will affect the health of your children is whether or not to vaccinate them. Since many medical authorities say vaccination is safe, most parents go ahead with vaccination, completely unaware of the potential dangers and unable to recognize serious reactions when they occur. I am a huge believer in parenting without regrets and I am writing this article to spur you to do some research on your own, especially since the information that you will be presented with (if any) by your pediatrician is not sufficient for you to make a truly informed choice. Regardless of whether you decide to vaccinate your children or not, you should at least be making a conscious and fully informed choice. The following is critical for you to consider before vaccinating

Vaccinations are not necessarily safe – YOU need to be the judge for your family
The majority of pediatricians will tell you that vaccinations are safe and that the number of children that experience adverse reactions is very low. In addition, they will lead you believe that the few negative reactions are carefully tracked and monitored. However, if you take the time to dig deeper you will find that these assertions are not evidence based and lack solid scientific backing. For example, there has never been a long term study that compares the health and welfare of vaccinated children to unvaccinated children. Seeing as cancer is the leading cause of death by disease for children under 15 years of age, would not it be interesting to know if the cancer rate for vaccinated kids was much higher than for unvaccinated kids?

Might that change our view on the safety and wisdom of custody? There has been some analysis into the issue, but both of the studies have been discounted by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). One study was of the Pennsylvania Amish, who do not vaccinate their children for religious reasons. When it was found that they have virtually no incidence of autism (nor of asthma, allergies or ADHD) the CDC responded by saying that the Amish have a "genetic connectivity" that protects them. (Reference 1) A second study, this one of a home-schooling organization of 35,000 children in the Chicago area, found that in this unvaccinated group there were no recorded cases of autism and that the incidence of asthma, allergies and ADHD was extremely low as well. (Reference 2) This was also discounted.

Vaccines are not thoroughly tested before, nor adequately tracked after, being released
Vaccinations are not rigorously tested before being released to the public. Typically, a new vaccine is tested by comparing short term side effects of a new vaccine against an already existing vaccine. The definition of what constituents a side effect is narrowly defined so that many side effects are determined to be coincidence – not related to the violation. It is also important to know that the pharmaceutical companies have been eliminated from liability for vaccine injuries since Congress enacted the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986. This leaves them with very little incentive to do thorough testing. For example, when a manufacturer's representative was asked in a 1997 Illinois Board of Health hearing to show evidence that the hepatitis B vaccine is safe for newborns, the representative stated, "We have none, our studies were done on 5 and 10 year-olds . " (Reference 3) This is concern because your children are scheduled to receive three doses of Hep B before they are a year old, with the first dose being administrated before you and your baby leave the hospital.

Since there is so little testing prior to release, one would hope that there would be careful tracking and follow-up after the vaccine has been released to the public so that if there were issues, they could be evaluated and the vaccine would be dropped from the market if necessary. Not so! It is true that when a vaccine is released into the market, post-marketing surveillance is supposed to track any negative reactions. However the adverse reporting system is entirely voluntary and according to David Kessler, (the head of the FDA for most of the 1990s), 90 to 99 percent of all adverse reactions are never reported. (Reference 4)

The combination of vaccinations currently required as part of the Recommended Immunization Schedule are overwhelming for the immune systems of many children
Not only are individual vaccines not rigorously tested, but the combination of vaccinations prescribed in the Centers for Disease Control "Recommended Immunization Schedule 2009" are not studied in combination to prove that giving multiple viral and bacterial vaccinations at one time is safe. Over the past twenty years, the number of vaccinations children are given has almost quadrupled. In 1983 children were given 5 shots during their first 6 months of life and 8 shots by the age of two. By 2007 that number increased 74% to 19 shots by the age of 6 months and a whooping 27 by the time they are two years old. This is especially disturbing when you realize that children are born with immature immune systems as well as an inability to effectively metabolize heavy metals.

For the most part, mercury (Thimerosol) has been removed from vaccines. This does not mean that there are not other ingredients in vaccines that cause concern. One of these ingredients is aluminum which is added to vaccines to increase their efficiency (help them work better). Why is aluminum a concern? Well, aluminum is eliminated primarily through the kidneys, when babies can not eliminate it effectively accumulates and causes impaired neurologic and mental development that does not show up until around 18 months of age. Infant kidney function is low at birth and does not reach full capacity until 1-2 years of age. (Reference 5) As a result, the cumulative exposure babies have to aluminum (in the process of receiving up to 37 doses of vaccine delivered in 27 shots during their first two years of life) can cause numerous problems. For example, children typically receive eight vaccinations (Hepatitis B, Rotavirus, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Haemophilus Influenza Type B, Pneumococcal and Inactivated Poliovirus) on the same day when they are 2 months old.

The total amount of aluminum they are injected with is between 295 and 1225 micrograms, depending on which brands of vaccine are used. Meanwhile, the FDA requires that all injectable solutions have a 25 microgram limit. (Reference 6) Not only is the maximum aluminum exceeded at two months, but they are injected with almost the same amount of aluminum at 4 months and again at 6 months, long before their kidneys are fully functioning and can eliminate the aluminum effectively. The combined amount of aluminum that builds up in their system will be dependent on their health and genetics, and is likely many, many times the recommended limit. More to the point, nobody knows what the repercussions are for the millions of children that are being vaccinated as part of the recommended schedule.

Parents, not the government or pharmaceutical companies, take full responsibility for vaccine damage
If your child is injured by vaccination, you can not sue the pharmaceutical company (s) that produced the vaccine (s). They have been protected from lawsuits by the US government. Instead, you must submit your case to the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP). To date, approximately 60 percent of the claims have been rejected. The problem with winning compensation is proving that the vaccine, not an unknown genetic problem or coincidence, caused the injury. Because your baby's immune system is complex, it is easy for them to say that it was something other than the vaccine that caused the problem. The whole process takes a long time, meaning that if your child is injured, you will likely wait years before you are awarded any money to defray the costs of raising a child with serious medical and caring needs. It is estimated that the lifetime cost of caring for one autistic child is more than $ 4.5M. VICP has awarded more than $ 1.1 billion for vaccine injuries since 1988. If your child is injured, no amount of money can really compensate you for losing the bright, happy, healthy child you once had.

In Summary
Vaccination is not mandatory. Exceptions are allowed in all states for medical, religious and / or philosophical reasons. As parents, you are the one who is extremely responsible for making decisions for your children. You are also the one who has to live with the repercussions of these decisions, not your family pediatrician, nor the government. Fortunately, there are many choices when it comes to custody. First, there is the choice to vaccinate or not. If you do choose to vaccinate, you should carefully consider how many vaccinations you want your child to be given and at what ages.

Stammering Help

Children are especially vulnerable when it comes to having problems with stammering. I'd like to go into a little detail about how we can help our children who are suffering from this problem. If we can give them stammering help, it will boost their confidence that they will be able to overcome this condition.

Start by slowing down. This begins with your actions. As children are generally hyperactive by nature, this is easier said than done, but by showing the children that they can gain better control of their stammering by slowing down, they will come around soon enough and slow down.

Along with slowing down activity and not rushing into things quite so fast physically, the child needs to slow their talking down. Along with hyperactive bodies, they have hyperactive tongues, which could wreck havoc on their talking.

Teach the child you are giving stammering help to all about patience, and how having that in abundance will help him or her is able to say what they want to say. There is no hurry when it comes to eliminating their stammering tongue. Patience really is a value. Nothing is ever gained by rushing headlong into it and running the risk of messing it all up. True for kids as well as for adults.

Teach the child to take a moment before they speak to gather their thoughts. Doing so, they can see in their mind what they want to say, and visualize themselves saying it. Kind of like rehearsal for their speech. Take the time here to teach them basic visualization skills. Treat it similar to daydreaming, so that they understand the concept better.

Remember never to force the words out. This will only make things worse. What will provide stammering help is to remember that there is no hurry. No one is timing you when you speak. Essential Oils – Healing Broken Bones is Not That Hard With the Right Healing Oils

Recently I slipped on ice and broke my arm. Luckily the bones were not displaced-a simple fracture of the head of the radius bone as shown on x-ray. What is significant is that the pain was greatly lessened by applying certain essential oils that are anti-inflammatory and pain relieving. Can essential oils help the healing process? In my case, absolutely! When bones are fractured, there may be swelling, internal bleeding into the area, nerve and even tendon damage. Applying ice and in my case splinting my arm to immobilize it greatly decreased the pain. Here are the essential oils that I used to get back full use of my arm in half the time someone of my age would take.

Helichrysum italicum also called Everlasting, was the first oil I used for pain and swelling. This is an outstanding oil that has several great medical properties. It is known as an anticoagulant, anesthetic, antispasmodic, antiviral, a liver protectant, detoxifier and stimulant, chelates chemicals and toxins, and helps to regenerate nerves.

Next I applied lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) for its anti-inflammatory action and its ability to regenerate connective tissues and ligaments. Lemongrass also dilates blood vessels, improves circulation, and promotes lymph flow. Lemongrass can be a little warm to the skin because of its high aldehyde content, so the third oil I chose was high in monoterpenes which served to quench the warmth.

Idaho balsam fir (Abies balsamae) is 98% monoterpenes making it an outstanding anti-inflammatory oil. It also has anticoagulant properties and is known as a great oil for arthritis/rheumatism, lumbago and sciatica. Plus the smell of balsam fir is that of Christmas trees-very refreshing and an improvement over the heavy lemongrass fragrance and “weed” smell of helichrysum.

The fourth oil I used was a blend called Trauma Life. It is a blend of valerian, lavender, frankincense, sandalwood, rose, helichrysum, spruce, geranium, davana and citrus hystrix. This particular blend helps to release buried emotional trauma from, in my case, the accident, but it also helps release emotional trauma from the death of loved ones, assault or abuse. It combats stress and uproots traumas that cause insomnia, anger, restlessness, and a weakened immune response. The valerian component of this oil certainly helped me to rest better since getting my arm in a comfortable position was a bit of a feat.

Many other essential oils have been found to be helpful in bone healing including wintergreen, peppermint, spruce, pine, ginger and vetiver. The key is finding out which oils are going to be most helpful for you. I found a formula that worked for me.

Myths About Deafness

At the outset of this article I must state that I am a hearing person. I have no qualifications in deaf culture. The aim of this article is to broaden cultural understanding of deafness and break down some of the myths about deafness.

Myth One

Deaf people cannot talk.

Fact: – Deaf people can talk. They use their hands, not their mouths to communicate. Sign language is a recognized language with its own structure, grammar and tenses. It can convey the same complexity of meaning as spoken language.

Myth Two

All deaf people use the same sign language.

Fact: – Each country has its own sign language. Just as there are many ‘spoken languages’ and many variations within each language. For example people from Scotland and those from America speak English. However they may have difficulty understanding each other. It is the same with sign language. There are some similarities between British Sign Language (BSL) and Auslan, but there are more differences. American Sign Language (ASL) uses one hand to spell words. Often when deaf people meet other deaf from a different country they rely on mime and gesture to communicate. This is the same as the way hearing people who do not share a language try to communicate. Within the international deaf community there is an international sign language. However this is generally only know by deaf people who travel overseas regularly.

Myth Three

The best way to communicate with a deaf person is by writing.

Fact: – Sign language uses a different structure and grammar than written English. Deaf people are very visual. Written English is often confusing to them. It is far better to use gesture and mime.

Myth Four

All deaf people can lip read.

Fact: – Less than half the deaf population can lip-read. Those that can lip read well will understand around 30% of what is said to them. People with accents, moustaches and poor lip patterns are more difficult to understand.

Myth Five

All deaf people have an intellectual disability.

Fact:- There is no relationship between deafness and intellect. As with the hearing population there are some deaf people who have an intellectual disability. Many deaf people attend university and hold responsible positions in business and society,

Myth Six

All deaf people should have a cochlea implant.

Fact:- Many deaf people are against Cochlea implants for deaf children. Again this is because there is no disability in being deaf. Deaf cannot imagine coping with the distraction of noise all day. One deaf woman made an excellent remark in relation to cochlea implants. She wondered what the medical professions’ response would be if she asked that her hearing child be operated on to remove it’s hearing. She is proud to be deaf. Her family is deaf. To her, deaf is normal. Hearing is a not normal in her family. She, like many other deaf, and some hearing people, believes that cochlea implants should never be given to children who are born deaf. Implants are most suited to those who have lost their hearing.

A thunderclap headache is a severe and sudden headache with enough force to literally knock a person over. It feels like the worst headache of your life. A very severe thunderclap headache is still noticed after a period of 7 days or longer. The pain is noticed anywhere in the region of the neck or head.

Symptoms

Thunderclap headaches are dramatic and don’t come with any early warning signs. The feeling of experiencing the headache is much like a sudden kick to the head which results in crippling pain. Beside the crippling head pain, other symptoms associated with this condition include vision problems, vomiting and nausea. In the most serious cases, such as those related to bleeding in the brain, the patient is certain to fall unconscious with a short period. The pain can last for 60 minutes to seven to 10 days. The most noticeable pain starts to recede within minutes, but this can often give a false belief that the thunderclap headache is improving on its own.

Treatment

Treatment given for the thunderclap headache depends on the results of the doctors check-up. The areas of greatest concern like swollen or burst blood vessels in the brain or thyroid glands are checked as a matter of urgency. It is also crucial to check for blood clots in the brain. A patient receives a MRI or CAT scan to help diagnosis the condition. If the imaging equipment detects one of the serious conditions, the patient is certain to receive immediate surgery to treat the bleeding.

If a scan is inconclusive, the patient is likely to receive a lumbar puncture or spinal tap to look at the spinal fluid. The cerebrospinal fluid can give more information on internal bleeding or reveal signs of the infection. Pain medication is given to help relieve the pain of the more persistent headache. When other symptoms are noticed like strange red marks, a stiff neck or high fever, this is often related to an outbreak of meningitis.
