Learn About a Cellulite Treatment

Want to learn about a cellulite treatment that really works, for anyone who is willing to listen. First off let us describe what is cellulite and some very basic characteristics of it. Cellulite can have a orange peel like resemblance to it or is lumpy and sometimes dark in appearance. It occurs on the surface of the skin in troubled areas such as thighs, waist and even on the arms. It occurs in both men and women but is widely viewed as being a women's issue. With men having more muscle tone than woman and with some woman gaining weight during pregnancy or after childbirth it is easy to understand why the female gender seems to be more afflicted by this.

Secondly lets dismiss most of the myths or wives tales on what causes cellulite. Many people talk like cellulite is genetic or once you get cellulite you keep it forever. Neither is the case and most individuals do not want to know the truth about cellulite because they are usually having trouble removing it. It is easier to blame other causes of why they can not get rid of cellulite than to face up to actually trying to get rid of it. This brings us to our next subject of what are the real causes of cellulite and why it occurs more on certain individuals than in others.

Knowing what really causes cellulite to form in first place will help in understanding how to finally and permanently remove this unsightly skin. Everyone must realize that cellulite is not a skin issue but is an underlying structural problem. After people learn that it is a muscle issue they can focus their efforts more towards exercise or weight training rather than wasting money on creams and topical gimmicks. Individuals using even the most expensive lotions or creams will find themselves cheated when all is said and done. Leaving them at square one again only to start that dreaded search for a cellulite treatment all over again.

Another myth is that you have cellulite because of your older age. This also is obviously not true because we already established it is an underlying structural issue that can be solved with a little guidance in proper exercise movements. These targeted moves can be accomplished by any age group and are very easy to incorporate into a daily routine. It does not even matter if you started developing your cellulite in your teens, thirties, forties or fifties these moves will benefit anyone. Just pushing ones self to follow through with the proper body movements on the affected areas will be the real major hurdle to accomplish.

Now that we know that some of the remedies to permanently get rid of cellulite is through proper exercise that focuses on the troubled areas. We can start to get to know our bodies a little better in order to be able to focus all energy towards the weak or underdeveloped muscles. Having the right body movement routine set in place will ensure a more beneficial exit of your efforts. People will be amazed at the results that woman of any age group or background are having with the right exercises made to tone, shape and tighten those troubled areas. So focusing on diet and exercise will be more beneficial than worrying about quick fixes of creams or any topical devices.

Seizures in Pets

Witnessing your precious dog or cat having a seizure can be a most frightening experience. During seizures pets often lose control, fall over, chomp their teeth, salivate or drool, whine, paddle with their feet, and begin to urinate or defect on themselves. Their eyes become large (dilated) and unresponsive. A pet caregiver feels panicked and helpless while watching it all happen.

Hopefully, you and your pet have never, and will never, have to experience this shocking event. But, if you have, or if you experience it in the future, this article will help you to understand what causes seizures, what you can do while your pet is having a seizure, and the various treatment options available.

What causes seizures? Epilepsy is one cause. Certain dog breeds are more susceptible to epilepsy. These include: cocker spaniels; poodles; collies; german shepherds; irish setters; golden retrievers; dachshunds, labrador retrievers, saint bernards, miniature schnauzers, siberian huskies, and wire-haired terriers. Veterinarians are not sure what causes this "hereditary" epilepsy.

In cats hereditary epilepsy is unusual. Vets can typically find the cause of seizures. These include chemical toxins (which includes chemical preservatives used in many pet foods), brain tumors, feline leukemia, feline infections, peritonitis, feline AIDS, head trauma, and problems with the liver and kidneys.

In dogs there are many causes of seizures besides hereditary epilepsy. Allergies to food and the chemicals, preservatives, and artificial flavors put into the foods can cause seizures. Other causes include liver and kidney disease, tumors, poisonings, and low blood sugars.

What can you do while your pet is having a seizure? Try to stay calm. This is hard to do, but using a calm, reassuring quiet voice will comfort your dog or cat. Move any furniture or other objects on which your pet could hurt itself. If you're unable to move the object, place pillows or wrap blankets between the pet and the object. Slide something soft under your pet's head, but be sure to keep your hands and face away from his head so that you do not risk a possible bite. You can gently stroke his hip or side, but position yourself opposite the side of the feet and toenails as the muscle spasms make the feet curl into claws that can gouge or rake your skin. Dim the lights, and keep the environment as quiet as possible by turning off the TV and loud music.

If possible take notes about the seizure so that you can give details to your vet. Jot down the time of day it occurred, the length of each seizure, and the time in between each seizure if they are recurrent. Your vet will also want to know whether your pet urinated or deficated, if the seizure hit suddenly or progressed from mere body twitching, whether your pet regained consciousness, and how long it took before your pet appeared normal again. In addition, you'll need to figure out if there were any possible triggering events. These include loud noises such as fireworks, unusual items that were ateen, and excessive playing or exercise.

After the seizure, pets usually appear lost or drugged. This drug state can last a few minutes to several hours depending on the severity of the seizure. Your pet may respond to you, but do so in a very slow manner. Since seizures are exhausting for your pet, he will probably want to sleep afterwards. It is best to allow him to sleep, but check in on him occasionally without disturbing his rest.

If this is your pet's first seizure, call your vet as soon as possible. Some vets will want to see if another seizure occurs, while others will perform a variant of blood tests to check for anemia, liver & heart functions, calcium, glucose, & electrolyte levels. Your vet may even run a screen for possible toxins, take x-rays, or perform an electroencephalogram.

The test results may not indicate the specific reason for the seizure. In this case, your vet may wait to see if another seizure occurs or he / she may suggest medicines. If the diagnosis is epilepsy, pets have an excellent chance to live a normal life as long as proper medical care and follow-up are provided.

If you discover the cause of the seizure, you may be able to eliminate future seizures by eliminating the seizure's source. For instance, if the seizure is due to chemical toxins, make sure your pet remains as free of toxins as possible. Provide human grade food and fruits that do not contain chemical preservatives, fillers, or byproducts. Clean your house with chemical-free products. Also, use more natural flea, tick, & heartworm prevention products as some of these products may lower your pet's seizure threshold and make seizures more difficult to control. Avoid products containing organophosphate insecticides. For safer heartworm prevention, use products containing interceptor and filaribits.

What can you do if your pet's seizure condition can not be cured and you realize you and your pet may have to live with the seizures? In the past, the only treatment options available were strong anticonvulsants that could have serious side effects. These still may be your only option. But, more natural approaches have been found to help some pets, either prior to stronger medications or in addition to them so that you may be able to lower the dose. There are a variety of treatment options that include a natural diet, acupuncture, nutritional supplements, homeopathy, herbs, and conventional medications.

As mentioned above, give your pet a human grade diet, free of chemicals and additives. Also, remove other toxins from your pet's environment. Clean with natural products and use more natural flea, tick, and heartworm prevention measures.

Minimize stress in your pet's life. Try to avoid sudden changes in his environment, loud noises, and other stressful situations.

You can also try herbs that act as sedatives. These include valerian root, kava, skullcap and oatstraw. Note that when using herbs and supplements, you may need to lower the dosage of other anticonvulsants.

Several supplements appear to help in preventing seizures. Try an antioxidant combination of Vitamin C, E, B-6, and selenium. Your vet can recommend the dosage for your pet. Magnesium and DMG (dimethyl glycine) are other helpful supplements.

Acupuncture is another helpful option which has helped to control seizures in many pets. Sometimes just placing an ear acupuncture tack in a dog's ear will stop seizures, and this only requires one acupuncture visit.

If the ear tack does not work, gold implants can be placed in different locations under a pet's head. Or your pet can be treated with traditional chinese acupuncture.

As you can see, there are many natural approaches to treating seizures in pets. These should help your beloved pet to live a normal and comfortable life.

Getting Your Tonsils Removed? Important – Read This

If you have been suffering from complications with your tonsils or adenoids, you may be considering having your tonsils removed. How can you be sure surgical treatment will make a difference? Will a tonsil removal or adenoidectomy resolve issues with tonsiliths?

Prior to surgical treatment, your health care provider may consider less invasive treatment methods. This may include self or in office removal of the tonsil stones using a curette or cotton swab, surgical removal of the tonsiliths alone, laser cryptolysis, or pulsating irrigation (stone removal with water).

When tonsil stones are recurrent and begin to cause problems such as bad breath or enlargement of the tonsils or adenoids due to infection or irritation, surgery often becomes the most effective treatment. Although having your tonsils removed is considered radical treatment, the surgery is quite common and very safe.

If you need to have your tonsils removed, you will be put under general anesthesia for the procedure. Using a scalpel or electrocautery, the surgeon will perform the tonsillectomy, removing the tonsils from the connective tissue. Cauterization, surgical sutures, and packing may be used to stop bleeding and close the wound.

Upon waking from your surgery, you may require a short hospital stay. Initial discomfort from the surgery may last from 10 to 20 days. A soft diet and a focus on hydration is required during the recovery period.

Tonsillectomy can eliminate tonsil stones, enlargement, and infection. While having your tonsils removed is a major event, you may find that the improvement in your quality of life more than makes up for the discomfort.

Basic Fundamentals of Glaucoma

In a person with normal vision and eyesight, the clear liquid in the eye flows in and out of the anterior chamber. This liquid nourishes the eye tissue. However, in people suffering from glaucoma the liquid is unable to flow and this creates a pressure to build up in the eye, which extremely leads to loss of vision or blindness.

The most common type of glaucoma is the open angle glaucoma. In this type, the fluid flow stops gradually because the canals get blocked. However, there is another type of glaucoma which is rather rare and is known as angle closure glaucoma. This is caused by complete blockage of the canal and this restrictions the immediate flow the liquid in the eye. People suffering from angle closure glaucoma experience a rapid rise in the eye pressure.

Another rare form of glaucoma is the normal tension glaucoma wherein the person sufferers from damage to the optic nerve and this in turn causes loss of vision although there is no blockage of the eye canals and no build up of pressure. There is not too much information on normal tension glaucoma but a general consensus shows that it is caused due to unusually delicate optic nerve or it can be inherited.

Most people do not realize that they are getting glaucoma. This is the reason why the condition goes undetected in hundreds of people and is only uncovered after they experience vision loss which is irreversible. That is why if you are suffering from eye pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, or seeing halos around lights, you should immediately consult an ophthalmologist. This way the condition can be used early and proper treatment regimen can be started.

The most common treatment for angle closure glaucoma is surgery where a part of the iris is removed to relieve the pressure and to facilitate the flow of the liquid in the eye. Other treatments include using medicines and eye drops. Although there is no cure for glaucoma, the effects can be reduced if the condition is done early.

Premenstrual Syndrome and Candida

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is condition that encompasses a wide array of symptoms that many women experience typically a week before their menstrual cycles but can occur up to two weeks before. The symptoms of PMS are so diverse and far reaching that it affects women both physically and emotionally. Symptoms of PMS include but are not limited to headaches, edema, back pain, abdominal cramps, abdominal bloating, abdominal gas, muscle spasms, breast tenderness, acne, food cravings, mood swings, anxiety, brain fog and depression. Although, I have heard many men and women alike joking about PMS it is no laughing matter to those women who are unfortunate enough to experience its debilitating symptoms month after month. Imagine experiencing symptoms for up to 14 days out of the month every single month. This is a miserable way to exist. There is however hope for those with PMS aside from just treating the monthly symptoms with over the counter pain medicines. This hope lies in the link between PMS and Candida.

Candidiasis is a condition in which yeast (Candida) overgrows in the intestinal system. Candida is usually a benign microorganism that contributes to a healthy microflora of the intestinal system. Candida ideally will work hand in hand with “friendly” bacteria within this system to remove waste and toxins from the body. However, due to numerous external factors Candida can become an opportunistic microorganism which releases toxins and causes the body to become unhealthy. Symptoms of candidiasis are as diverse as those of PMS and that is why it often goes unrecognized. It has been found that many women who experience PMS also experience candidiasis related symptoms. Chronic yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, abdominal gas, abdominal bloating, depression and anxiety are not uncommon. The good news is that this linkage provides hope for alleviating PMS symptoms through treatment of the underlying candidiasis.

The Candida Diet is the cornerstone of treatment for candidiasis. The goal of the diet is to cut off the food supply to the Candida, therefore killing them, an eliminating the toxins they produce from the body. The diet is very restrictive eliminating all forms of sugar, processed foods, quick acting carbohydrates and many other foods that have been shown to feed Candida. It is however an extremely effective method of treating this condition. It can be very difficult to adhere to the Candida Diet because of these restrictions and but these dietary changes have been proven to help many women with PMS overcome their monthly misery. The first weeks on the diet are hardest because there actually may be an increase in symptoms due to the die-off period where large amounts of Candida are literally being starved and killed in your body. The body may have a hard time dealing with the toxins that these dead microorganisms produce initially. This is the reason why it often gets worse before it gets better. If you suffer from PMS and are looking for naturally ways to relieve these symptoms look into the Candida Diet.

Wound Care After Surgery – How to Heal Faster After Having Plastic Surgery

Wound care after surgery can take a toll on a person! To ensure the best results while you are choosing plastic surgery to alter your looks, or having reconstruction done because of breast cancer, a good outcome comes from knowing how to take care of yourself before and after your procedure. The better you prepare – the better your exit will be!

Keep in mind that about 1 in 100 wounds will become infected after surgery no matter what you or your doctor does. We will look at ways to make sure you are not that one.

Your wound care after surgery actually starts weeks ahead of time in getting your body ready.

To prepare your body for your surgery start a few weeks ahead of time in getting good nutrition, properly hydrated and plenty of rest and good exercise. Think of this as an athletic event you are getting ready for.

Being in good physical shape helps your body heal faster because good circulation is vital to getting blood, oxygen and nutrients to the surgical area.

Your skin is the largest organ of the body – and the thinnest. Only 1/10 of an inch separates you from all sorts of toxins. The skin is also highly permeable – what goes on your skin can get in your blood stream. You need to be good to your skin and prepare your skin for the incoming incision or damage that is going to happen. When the skin gets what it needs; vitamins, minerals, proteins and nutrients, it can do what it does best – heal itself.

You need to make wise eating choices, and drink plenty of water. Your diet should include healthy proteins which are building blocks for cells, vitamin C and zinc which are known to promote wound healing. Lots of fresh green vegetables will also help speed up the recovery process. Eliminating processed sugars and carbonated beverages also helps the body mend quicker.

Being in good physical shape will help speed up your recovery as well. This does not necessarily mean go join a gym and go crazy – simply get your body moving. You will do yourself a favor to take a 30 to 40 minute walk each day just to get your blood moving.

Staying properly hydrated helps a body heal better as well. There is a simple way to know how much water is the right amount for you to be drinking daily. You need half your body weight in ounces. For example; if you weigh 150 pounds you should drink half that in ounces: 75 ounces of water daily. That will help flush toxins out of your system and help your skin heal where the incision is going to be.

Lack of sleep takes a toll on your immune system. Try to get a good 7 – 8 hours or more of sleep per night in the weeks leading up to your surgery. Naps are a good thing when needed as well.

Do I really need to say how harmful smoking is to your health and healing process? And please – no alcoholic beverages for a few weeks before at best, and at the least for one week prior to your surgery. Then be kind to your body and refrain for a few weeks after as well.

Afterwards, your healing is helped by continuing to drink plenty of water and getting your needed sleep. Get up and about as soon as possible – the body mends better when the blood is flowing and circulating. Talk with your doctor about what you can and can not do.

If the skin around the wound becomes red, swollen and painful you may have an infection. Call your doctor.

In healthy patients following the wound care after surgery, most wounds heal within two weeks. If you have health problems such as diabetes or a weakened immune system, or are on certain drugs, such as stereoids or chemotherapy drugs your healing will probably take longer.

Wounds on the face usually take one to two weeks to heal. Wounds on the arms, trunk and upper legs take about three weeks. Wounds on the lower legs, especially in people over forty, can take up to 3 months to heal.

What Causes Chickenpox?

Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease, caused by a virus which belongs to the herpes family. This virus is known as varicella-zoster virus and also as the Herpes Zoster virus. Not only chickenpox is produced by it but shingles is too.

Chickenpox occurs mostly during the end of the winter and the beginning of the spring. It generally affects children aged from 2 to 8 and can take the form of epidemics.

If an infected person coughs or sneezes, the virus will be spread in the air and will be caught by other healthy persons while breathing. The virus is known to be present in the body long before the skin rash appears; this is the reason why there are so many cases of contamination.

After the virus got into your body it generally needs two weeks to develop and only then the rash will appear. But this does not mean that you are not contagious within these two weeks.

The symptoms of chickenpox are: fever, itchy, red bumps that transform into round blisters with a red base. These blisters will form a crust and will eventually dry. For at least 5 days the infected person should not get into close contact with people that have not suffered from chickenpox and children should not go to school because they can infect others. Pregnant women who have made chickenpox before are safe and so is their baby. If she has not made chickenpox and got in contact with an infected person, the doctor can administer antibodies of chickenpox within 4 days of a possible contamination. After the dry scabs form the rate of contamination will decrease.

After the disease had terminated the virus will not disappear completely, it will shed inside the nervous cells and will remain inactive for some years. At some point, when the immune system will work improperly the virus will reactivate and will cause shingles. This is a painful disease that affects the face and trunk nerves and also causes a rash to appear.

The chickenpox infected person will also be prohibited from flying because the air conditioner in airplanes will transmit the virus more easily to other passengers. The virus is dangerous for those who have AIDS, cancer or follow a treatment with immunosuppressive drugs. Only those who have a good immune system response and those who have been vaccinated against chickenpox will not develop the disease.

Glaucoma Eye Drop Shows Promise in Improving Vision for Macular Degeneration Patients

Eye redness was the clue that something was happening to Celia Ramirez's vision. Although she was not having trouble driving or doing other tasks, her children urged her to have a checkup. It turned out she was in the early stages of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a disease that attacks a person's central field of vision.

Mrs. Ramirez, who lives in Mission in the Rio Grande Valley, had surgery that successfully controlled her eye pressure, but her central vision continued to deteriorate. Her specialist is William E. Sponsel, MD, associate professor and director of research in the Department of Ophthalmology at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSC). Dr. Sponsel's research led him to prescribe treatment with new combinations of medicines. "These last two medicines he's had me on, they have really worked," Mrs. Ramirez said. "We've done a lot of praying.

The miracle involves carbon dioxide, which is crucial for vision. The healthy eye produces enough carbon dioxide to dilate blood vessels around the retina and maintain proper blood flow. The ailing eye does not produce enough. This holds important implications for the treatment of patients with blind eye diseases such as AMD and glaucoma, which are marked by diminished circulation of blood in the back of the eye. Eye pressure also is a conventional barometer of eye health.

About 60 of 65 patients have seen their vision improve while receiving treatment at UTHSC's teaching hospital, University Hospital. "The patients are receiving combination drug therapy, including agents that trick the eye into retaining more of its carbon dioxide," Dr. Sponsel said. "We have patients with glaucoma and no AMD, patients with AMD and no glaucoma, and patients with both disorders.

The Health Science Center is the first medical center to initiate this combination therapy for patients with central visual loss, Dr. Sponsel said. Consider research yielded the conclusions that now help patients. "You do not expect these patients to get better, you expect them to get worse," he said. "We have seen dramatic results that bode well for treatment of these disorders in the future."

The researchers measure patients' sensitivity to light on visual function tests. An increase of 10 points represents more than a million-fold increase in actual visual acuity. Mrs. Ramirez's vision in the macula – the central visual area that enables perception of letters and colors – was scored as inherently zero on early tests. After the recent treatment, her score is now 24.

The miracle agents are called "carbonic anhydrase inhibitors" (CAI's). Given as eye drops, CAI's reach the back of the eye rapidly and slow the clearance of carbon dioxide while increasing the supply of nutrients. They help dilate blood vessels inside and behind the retina, which is the structure that receives, processes and transmits visual images relayed from the brain.

Dr. Sponsel pursued this line of research in an intriguing way – after discovering that adults who hyperventilated and rapidly blew off their body's carbon dioxide demonstrated reduced vision, eye pressure and circulation in the back of the eye. He was raising subjects one week with a CAI called dorzolamide and the next week with placebo eye drops. During hyperventilation, the subjects on dorzolamide maintained good light sensitivity in their central field of vision, while the same subjects during placebo treatment showed central visual loss. Dr. Sponsel holds two US patents on this work. One valuable aspect of the research is that it proves increased eye pressure is not necessarily the definitive indicator of eye vessel disease.

Mrs. Fernandez is seeing more light at the end of the tunnel these days, thanks to the combination therapy Dr. Sponsel is testing. "Vision is precious," he said. "Despite the odds, she has had a beautiful retention of her ability to see."

The drugs used in this novel therapy, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (CAI's) are only available by prescription and must be prescribed by your optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Natural Home Remedies for Stress, Mental Disorders

What are these?

Nervous diseases are more difficulty to diagnose than diseases of the various organs of the body because the nervous system is hidden from the eye of the physician and it can be known only from the disturbances of the organs governed by the affected nerves whether and of what type the nervous diseases is. Under this head come apoplexy, forgetfulness, hysteria, mental defectiveness, mental illness, neurasthenia and others. The most common nervous weakness, nervous break down or nervous exhaustion.

Causes:

Many factors contribute to the production of nervous diseases. Some people are born with a nervous disposition and it is that category which generally suffers from headaches, neuralgia, hysterical manifestations and bizarre forms of mental activity. The nervous system is exposed to the fast pace of modern life, which tends to bring on many diseases like anxiety states, digestives disturbances and exhaustion. Shocks to both mind and body, such as the loss of a dear one, money reverses, an unfortunate love affair and an accident may be the starting point of many chronic nervous complaints. Certain organic poisons like the one produced in body by diseases like syphilis give rise to serious nervous disorders. Chronic alcoholism may bring on severe mental derangement. The organic disorders manifest themselves in the shape by hysteria, anxiety states and nervous breakdowns.

Weakness of the nervous system can give rise to diseases like dyspepsia or palpitation, which cannot be helped by remedies directed towards those organs. It is but natural since it is the brain and the nervous system enclosed in it, which controls the bodily functions. A sudden loosening of bowels or the bladder in case of fright is an example. Another example is of certain persons with a strong will power who are able to fight serious crisis brought on by diseases much better than ordinary individuals.

Symptoms:

A person suffering from nervous weakness or debility generally experiences a sense of nameless fear, agitation, perplexity, confusion, worry, disappointment, loneliness, irritability and insomnia. The physical symptoms are constipation, dyspepsia, headaches, vague aches and pains all over the body and feverishness. The patient is also inclined to be a hypochondriac. The moment he reads about or hears the symptoms of a disease he imagines that he suffers from it. The wise physician will keep him away from any medical literature.

The main cause of a nervous breakdown is the rat race in which modern man engages. The lust for money and success-which again is measured in the good things of life, -motivates a man to overwork, both mentally and physically. Constant worry about things being done and to be done lead to tension and a man falls prey to his imagination. Overstraining leads to mistakes which erodes his self-confidence and after that the only way is the way downhill.

Treatment:

Since a healthy mind can reside only in a healthy body, see that the body regains its health. The paint must live a normal, natural life. He should try to get sleep. During the day also he should be advised to relax in a bed for some hours. The loosening of tensions by relaxation will help his organs to do their work properly and he would be able to get rid of the poisons.

The next imperative for such a patient is exercise. He should take walks and if possible take a jogging. His foods should include bread made from wheat from which bran has not been sieved out, fruits and boiled vegetables. Since nervous debility shows a marked lack of vitamin B, the deficiency should be made up by inclusion in his diet of foods, which contain it in larger measure. Unpolished rice, milk, cucumber, mangoes, pears, pineapples, guava, tomatoes, raisins and leafy vegetables should be his mainstay. He should be asked to eat his food in a relaxed manner, chewing it properly before ingestion.

Massages can help in reactivating the nervous system. Hydropathic treatment is also recommended and that merely consists in bathing his spine with a garden or bathroom shower for a couple of minutes. The water should be cold. During summer cold showering of the spine could be done three times or more and in winter twice would do.

The patient must be told to exercise his willpower to get rid of the disease. He must be told that he is getting better. Psychological impressions must be created on his mind, which will help to understand that his disease is not incurable. Suggestion is the best thing in such circumstances. It has to be remembered that certain nervous diseases like hysteria are the result of autosuggestion and nothing else.

Persons suffering from nervous debility are always on the look out for crutches on which they can lean or shoulders on which they can weep. The wise physician tries to reawaken their self-confidence and the desire to stand on their own feet.

Exercises:

Some exercises are helpful in dealing with nervous debility.

Sit on your feet with your stomach touching your knees. Try to keep your spine straight and extend both your arms. Now thrust your right foot forward and stand up with a jerk. Resume your earlier position and repeat the exercise with your left foot.

Stand with your right leg about a foot from your left. Join your hands and extend the arms downward, upward and then backward. More the arms with the hands joined in a circular motion and inhale and exhale deeply during the movement.

Lie on your back on the floor with your elbows touching your sides. Then try to raise the body with your elbows and heels and then resume the former position.

Stand like a boxer and make positions like you are hitting somebody with your fists. Or, to put it differently, indulge in shadow boxing for some time, moving your feet as a boxer does.

Stand in the normal position and then sit down with a jerk on your toes, with your palms touching the ground. Suddenly jerk your legs back just as you were about to do push-up. The exercise is akin to doing sit-ups and push-ups simultaneously.

If this regimen is followed for some weeks, you can get rid of any nervous disorder. It is also beneficial for sciatica, hydrosel and dropsy.

Water Retention

If you think you are too big for your clothes, your face is puffy and looks swollen when you get up in the morning, then you are suffering from water retention. The other symptoms are bloating of the stomach or tightness of the ring in the finger. Your shoes will pinch and all these events will cause you a lot of discomfort. This is called water retention or edema.

Usually, our bodies have the ability to balance the water levels in the body depending on the food that we eat or drink. But at times, this balance tends to go haywire. The leading causes of edema are excessive salt and alcohol intake, long periods of inactivity and monthly hormonal fluctuations or pregnancy in women. A sudden gain in weight or swollen ankles is the only signs of water retention.

The common home remedies for water retention are:

o Go into deep water: Exercising in the swimming pool will be an excellent remedy for curing this problem. This is due to the water pressure forcing out the excess water out of the tissues and into the bladder. It is advised to exercise gently in the pool at the temperature of 80 to 90 degrees F. If you are pregnant, avoid water above 100 degrees.

o Avoid diuretics: Although diuretics are effective for the flushing out of excess water in the people with the heart, kidney or liver disease, they can also cause rebound edema. Continuous usage will activate the salt and water retaining hormones and when stopped, these hormones are activated and cause water retention.

o Minimize salt intake: Avoid foods high in salt like hotdogs, burgers, pizzas etc. They contain very high salt content and the fluid released will remain in the body till kidneys have a chance to excrete them which is about 24 hours.

o Exercise continuously: Exercise has been shown to reduce the water retention by flushing out the water and salt through sweating, higher respiration and increased urine flow. If you have been sitting for a long time, walk up and down or climb stairs every hour. You can also try the following exercise: point the toes down, then raise them up as high as possible which pumps up the calf and foot muscles. You can also raise your hands up overhead.

o Increase fluid intake: Water moves through the kidneys and bladder thus diluting the urine. It becomes easier for the kidneys to flush diluted urine out along with the salt contained in it. Plain water is the best option, since juices, sodas and colas have salt content.

o Sip on the herbal tea: Many herbs are slightly diuretic. Parsley is the best known one. Take two teaspoons of dried leaves for each cup of boiling water and see for ten minutes. Drink three cups a day.

o Lie down with feet up: Recline with the feet up in the raised position. This will allow the fluid collected in the legs to go to the circulatory systems and from there to the kidneys for excretion.

If these tips do not work or if you have heart and kidney problems consult a doctor. You can also consult a doctor if you have a pitting edema where an indentation remains when you press the skin.

Elementary Science Fair Projects – Making the Perfect Display Board

Your display board gets a chance to speak about your elementary science fair project even before you get a chance to speak. So I would advise you pay some good attention to it, as this will be the first thing that the judges will examine.

Here are some elements that go into making the perfect display board for your elementary science fair:

  1. Your Supplies: Your display board must be made up of hard cardboard or plywood. A wooden board may be very heavy to be transported around. It should consist of three panels that can be slowly folded to make the board stand on its own. Avoid using a poster board as it can get warped and fall over, causing you embarrassment. Cover the display board with a colored colored contact paper, fabric or wallpaper.
  2. Your Color Scheme: You must not use more than 3 contrasting colors. The background can be white, light blue, yellow or some light color. The title and the subtitles must have darker colors such as dark green, dark blue or red. Make your papers and reports stand out by putting a dark colored border made of construction paper around them.
  3. Never use neon colors as they do not look professional and would distract the onlooker from the theme of the project.

  4. Your Layout: Now we come to the most important part of your elementary science fair display. Your display board must be simple, and neatly organized. It must be inviting enough for people to come over and want to learn more about your project.
  • Title: Your title is actually your conclusion in short. The letters used for the title should be large and should be placed on the top part of the central panel.
  • Subtitles: Your subtitles must be slightly smaller than the title and can be made of self-sticking letters which you can buy from a local office supplies store.
  • Pages displayed: The print on the report pages must be large enough with important points well highlighted so that the person standing at your display table can read them clearly. Although you can manually draw graphs, it is best to use a computer for tables, charts and graphs.
  • Center of Attraction: Have an impressive graphic just below the title that will be the center of attraction of your display and that can lead the onlooker to other parts thereafter.
  • Diagrams: Create relevant drawings using pencil first and then colors. Use an opaque projector if you have access to one.
  • Photographs: Photographs display articles or equipment that can not be transported to the elementary science fair. They also display you in action during different stages of the experiment. They make your display live and tend to attract attention.
  • A base: Your display board must be placed on a sturdy table covered with a light colored table cloth in keeping with your color scheme. Place neatly labeled copies of your abstract, project report and your journal on the table neatly.
  • Model and Equipment: Place your model or demonstration equipment on the table near your abstract, project report, and journal. A well made model can be the highlight of the display table. Avoid loose cables hanging from the table or the display board.

That's about everything you need to know about making the perfect display board!

Fungus Infections

Candida is caused by two things: a diet high in refined carbohydrates, and a lowered immune system, which can be caused by illness or stress. An overabundance of fungus can further diminish the immune system, and has been linked with chronic fatigue.

Conventional medicine admits that the people most often infected are those with natural defenses depressed by excessive use of antibiotics and steroids or by certain diseases or operative procedures. Even spermicides have been credited with upsetting the delicate bacterial balance that invites too much Candia. Nonoxynol-9 is the most commonly used over-the-counter spermicide. One medical journal reported that candida albicans were found to not only survive in up to a 25 percent concentration of this product, but grow and adhere better to cells when exposed to it.

The conventional medicine Home Health Handbook states that: 'Broad-spectrum antibiotic taken for other causes can disrupt the natural bacterial balance of the female parts, and promote candida vaginitis from an overgrowth of yeast.

Antibiotics make the situation worse by destroying the army of beneficial bacteria, allowing candida albicans to go where it does not belong and proliferating. Normally, candida is not a problem because intestinal bacteria keep it under control. But when bacteria are killed by antibiotics, for example, the bad guys can proliferate while the good guys are still down for the count. Keep in mind that antibiotics are in the food supply because antibiotic supplements are given to animals as treatment for diseases and as food additives.

Candida is an opportunistic organism that overgrows only when the body is beset by allergies, nutritional deficiencies or environmental pollution- anything that lowers the body's natural defenses, including today's modern lifestyle and eating habits.

John Parks MD, emphasizes the need to eliminate allergens and irritants, which underline the immune system, following up with nutritional and bacterial boosters to restore the natural and effective defense system. He especially recommends liquid agicate garlic extract as a particularly effective fungus fighter, stating that it worked better than the prescription drug nystatin is several studies. Adding that a good squirt of the liquid form sloshed as long as you can in the mouth several times a day can effectively cure thrush.

Numerous studies have been conducted on the antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties of garlic, and researchers have found it even works on candida. The Journal of General Microbiology reported on a Kuwaiti study of liquid garlic extract and its effect on candida albicans. NO matter how the researchers diluted it, the garlic was able to reduce the overgrowth.

Injections – How Much is an ml, cc, IU?

In many countries, steroids are legal and even can be purchased over the counter. As a results many of these injectable anabolics are administered by the user. Below is information aiding in the conversion of such drugs. This article does not endorse the use of illegal drugs.

I. U.= international unit. This is a unit used to measure the activity (that is, the effect) of many vitamins and drugs. For each substance to which this unit applies, there is an international agreement specifying the biological effect expected with a dose of 1 IU. Other quantities of the substance are then expressed as multiples of this standard. This also means that this measurment is not based on sheer volume or weight of the substance, but rather the effect.

ml = milliliter. This is a VOLUME measurement. it is 1/1000 of a liter. when talking about water or similar liquids, it is equivalent to one cubic centimeter.

cc = cubic centimeter. This is also a VOLUME measurement. Most syringes measure their capacity in cc’s. If you have a 5cc syringe, it will hold ~5ml of liquid in it.

mg = milligram. This is a WEIGHT measurement. It is 1/1000 of a gram. the amount of chemical substance is often measured in milligrams. For injectable solutions, this will be reported as a concentration of weight to volume, such as mg/ml (milligrams per milliliter). In the case of orally administered substances, the weight of chemical is labeled, athough the actual weight of the pill/capsule may be much higher, because of the use of filler substances. This means that a small pill may be much more potent than a large pill, so don’t judge a pill based on its size, but the actual amount of substance for which it is labeled as.

mcg = microgram = 1/1000 of a mg (milligram) There are one thousand micrograms in one milligram.

Conversion factors:

1000 mcg (microgram) = 1 mg (milligram)

1000 mg (milligram) = 1 g (gram)

1000 g (gram) = 1 kg (kilogram)

1000 ml (milliliter) = 1 liter

1ml (water) = 1cc (water)

1ml (oil) ~ 1cc (oil) (~ denotes approximately equal to)

Examples putting it all together

Say a user has some Drug XYX from two different companies. One is ‘XYX-300’ from QV, and one from BM which is ‘XYZ-100’. Both of these are XYZ DRUG, but they have different concentrations. What this means is….

for the XYZ-300:

if you take 1 ml (one milliliter) of this solution, it will take up ~1cc (one cubic centimeter) of space in the syringe. There will be 300mg (three hundred milligrams) of XYZ in this dosage.

for the XYZ-100:

if you take 1 ml (one milliliter) of this solution, it will take up ~1cc (one cubic centimeter) of space in the syringe. There will be 100mg (one hundred milligrams) of XYZ in this dosage.

If you put the syringes side by side, they appear the exact same, so what is the difference? the XYZ-300 has a concentration of 300mg/ml, while the XYZ-100 only has a concentration of 100mg/ml. This means that the syringe with XYZ-300 has three times (3x) the amount of DRUG XYZ in the same exact volume as the syringe with XYZ-100.

How Can Essential Oils Restore a "Leper" to Society As in the Bible Stories?

One of the ways anointing with essential oils was used in Biblical times was for healing and restoring those who were sick back to the community-especially the lepers.

Anointing with oils was used for soothing of wounds and referred to in other books like the Apocalypse of Moses as an “oil of mercy” and as a cure for every kind of illness. The idea that oil conferred health and well-being is the significance of a rite in the cleansing of the leper found in Lev 14:15-18. We need to remember that any kind of “icky” skin condition was classified as leprosy-this might include Hansen’s Disease (what we know as leprosy today), eczema and psoriasis to name but a few. The Leviticus passage is not a purification rite but the conveying of life as is suggested by the anointing of the head. The entire rite indicates that the formerly ostracized person is now accepted once more into the life of society. This is such an interesting account for if you know anything about the Vita-Flex points in the body, these three are significant. The priest was to put some of the oil on the tip of the right ear-a reflex point to release guilt. Then he put oil on the thumb of the right hand and the big toe on the right foot which are both reflex points for the brain and pineal gland-the center of the body’s communication systems and the place where emotional memory is stored.

“The priest shall take some of the log of oil [a liquid measure] and pour it into the palm of his own left hand, and dip his right finger in the oil that is in his left hand and sprinkle some oil with his finger seven times before the Lord. Some of the oil that remains in his hand the priest shall put on the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, and on the thumb of the right hand, and on the big toe of the right foot, on top of the blood of the guilt offering. The rest of the oil that is in the priest’s hand he shall put on the head of the one to be cleansed. Then the priest shall make atonement on his behalf before the Lord.” Lev. 14:15-18

The oil used in this particular ritual was that of cedarwood- one of the oldest oils known to man. It was used to cleanse lepers and evil spirits-used in similar ways as sandalwood. The Egyptians and Sumerians were using it over 5,000 years ago for embalming, as a disinfectant and for other medicinal purposes. For biblical people, this oil symbolized abundance, fertility and spiritual strength. It is still used as a temple incense by the Tibetans and is employed in their traditional medicine.

Oil in the Old Testament appears fundamentally as a source of strength, vitality and life. To possess an oil was evidence of wealth and a mark of the nation’s prosperity. Anointing someone with oil paid the person great honor. So it was spoken of as bringing joy and gladness to festive occasions. Oil created bonds between parties where the anointer showed his authority and assured his support and protection. And in sacred contexts, anointing with an oil acquired the weight of theology and of holiness.

Can I Run a Race Without Registering For It?

I often have athletes that I coach decide that they want to run a race in training to help them prepare for their up-coming goal race. Sometimes they either want to use the race to simulate the conditions for their goal race, or they want to get in a long run while having the company of other runners and the help of aid stations.

Many times my clients ask me if they must register and pay for the race or can they just run it and not take the medal as your cross the finish line. I always tell my clients that they need to register and pay the fee. This is the same information I pass on to you. I recommend this for many reasons.

Running a race without registering and paying the entry fee is very common. It is called being a bandit. The first reason to register for a race is to be allowed to be on the course. I most cases races do not want unregistered runners on the course. They can be a liability to both the race and the other runners. They put an additional burden on race officials and they can cause someone else or themselves to get hurt in some way.

The second reason is to think about the other runners. Use the 2007 Chicago Marathon as an example. Both years the weather was warmer than usual for that time of year. There were even reports of aid stations that had run out of water or Gatorade. Imagine yourself in the marathon that year. The temperature is in the low 90’s and you are approaching mile 20. As we all know mile 20 seems to be where everyone falls apart in the marathon. As you approach the aid station you feel like a glass of water or Gatorade is essential to helping you make it to the finish line. As you reach the aid station you see a volunteer hand out the last cup of water to a runner without a bib on. You decide to move on to the Gatorade just to discover that it too has run out. Now you have to run another mile hoping that the next aid station has fluids all the while know that the glass of liquid you paid for when registering for the race was just stolen by the bandit just in front of you who did not pay the entry fee. How would you feel?

The third reason is for safety purposes to you. You have decided to bandit a 25 kilometer trail race. The trail takes you through a very remote section of the wilderness that consists of steep hills that you must negotiate. You think that the race will make an ideal situation for you to get in a long run and hill training to prepare you for an up-coming hilly marathon. About mid-race your reach the top of a hill and you are headed down the other side of it. Suddenly you toe catches a rock and you are tumbling down the hill. Sometime during your slide down the hill you hit your head. Now you are unconscious. A race official is notified of your position and emergency personnel are summoned. The only problem now is that they have no idea who you are because you have no identification and no bib number to match up with registration information. The emergency personnel have no idea what medication you may or may not be allergic to or what your past medical history may include that could help them treat you.

These are just three reasons why it is important to register and pay the entry fee anytime you run a race. Being a bandit can seem like a cheap way to get into a race it should be avoided. Do yourself and all your fellow runners a favor and pay that entry fee.
