Dr. Frederick Wolfe, the director of the National Databank for Rheumatic Diseases and the lead author of the 1990 paper that first defined the diagnostic guidelines for fibromyalgia, says he has become cynical and discouraged about the diagnosis. He now considers the condition a physical response to stress, depression, and economic and social anxiety. "

Dr. Wolfe goes on to say, "Some of us in those days thought that we had actually identified a disease, which this is clearly not."

"… other doctors – including (Dr. Wolfe) the one who wrote the 1990 paper that defined fibromyalgia but who has since changed his mind – say that the disease does not exist and that Lyrica and the other drugs will be taken by millions of people who do not need them. "

Just when I was optimistic that the traditional medical community was finally getting the message that fibromyalgia is a very real and very serious illness, this kind of short-sighted, arrogant, and simple-minded myth raises its ugly head once again. This bit of news, by a prominent rheumatologist, is not a huge surprise. When was the last time you visited your rheumatologist (after waiting months to be seen) and felt like they understood your fibromyalgia? And if they did believe you had fibromyalgia, were they helpful?

Probably not, since their answer is to recommend more and more drugs, year end and year out. The side effects of these drugs begin to add up and pretty soon you realize your fibromyalgia symptoms are not much better, and worse, you've got additional symptoms from all those meds.

I've repeatedly been asked to give my opinion on the over-hyped new drug for fibromyalgia, Lyrica. I've kept quiet for two reasons. One, I wanted to give Lyrica the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately Lyrica has proven to be ineffective for the majority of my patients, as well as the fibromyalgia sufferers I'm in contact with around the world. Secondly, I thought at least Pfizer's multi-million dollar drug campaign would help the public understand the pain fibromyalgia patients experience day in and day out. Surely the TV and print ads would help others realize that yes there is such a thing as fibromyalgia, here are the symptoms, and this is why aunt Jane feels so miserable each day.

According to the New York Times, worldwide sales of Lyrica reached $ 1.8 billion in 2007, up 50 percent from 2006. Analysts predict sales will rise an additional 30 percent this year, helped by consumer advertising. During the first nine months of 2007, Pfizer spent $ 46 million on Lyrica ads.

Sadly, The New York Times and other print media have elected to take a different slant. Instead of helping dispel the myth that those with fibromyalgia are crazy, lazy, or depressed, they've elected to focus on the minimum of doctors who think fibromyalgia is not real.

As I lecture and interact with doctors throughout North America, I routinely encounter doctors who do not believe fibromyalgia exists, but the number has steadily declined. But now this article comes out and what will the public think?

More on Lyrica

Lyrica is the first prescription medication approved to treat fibromyalgia. Pfizer's Lyrica, commonly known as pregabalin, binds to receptors in the brain and spinal cord and seems to reduce activity in the central nervous system. But, no one knows exactly how Lyrica works.

Some say that Lyrica does not work well enough to have warranted its FDA approval. In 2004, the FDA as a remedy for diabetic nerve pain, reviewed Lyrica. The reviewers recommended against approving the drug, citing its side effects. But the FDA ignored the advice of Lyrica reviewers, and approved it anyway. Then Pfizer asked the FDA to expand the approved uses of Lyrica to include the treatment of fibromyalgia, and the agency did so in June.

According to in clinical trials, patients taking Lyrica reported that their pain fell on average about 2 points on a 10-point scale, compared with 1 point for patients taking a placebo. Not a big deal to say the least.

About 30 percent of patients said their pain fell by at least half, compared with 15 percent taking placebos.

The study involved 75 participants took Lyrica and 75 took a sugar pill or placebo. So 38 of those taking Lyrica had at least a 50% in pain. But 23 participants taking a placebo had at least a 50% reduction in pain. Lyrica was helpful for 15 more participants than a sugar pill. But, at what cost?

Lyrica causes gain gain and edema, or swelling, as well as dizziness and sleepiness. According to the New York Times, in 12-week trials, 9 percent of patients saw their weight rise more than 7 percent, and the weight gain appeared to continue over-time. A few essential oils

In the double blind place controlled study that was transported the team examined the use of a combination of assorted essential oils and placebo oil on 86 individuals who were suffering from alopecia areata. The mixture was made of thyme, rosemary, lavender and cedarwood essential oils which were mixed with carrier oils of jojoba and grapeseed. The mixture would then be applied to the scalp daily and it was the control group who only used the carrier oil for their daily massage.

The test went on for a total of 7 months and after this time 19 of the 43 people (44%) who had been using the essential oil blend showed any improvement to the hair on their scalps compared to only 6 of the 41 people (15 %) who were in the control group.

Onion Juice?

In this study which was published in the Journal of Dermatology they Intensely studied the effectiveness of onion juice compared to a placebo on a test group of people with alopecia areata. Of the individuals being studied 23 of them were asked to apply on juice to the scalp two times daily for two months while the other 15 were asked to just apply regular water twice daily for two months.

The study showed that people who were in the occasion juice test group began to see some form of hair growth after using the treatment for two weeks and by the time 4 weeks had passed 17 of them (73.9%) had begun to experience some hair growth . Then by the sixth week a total of 20 of the people (86.9%) in the onion juice group were now experiencing some form of hair growth. Also improvement was significantly higher in the men in the group than the women and during the whole 8 week (two month) trial only two people in the tap water group not any hair growth.

In comparing the use of Manuka Honey dressings with topical antiseptics on wound infections, it has been found that Manuka Honey dressings significantly reduce the amount of fluid exuding from the wound. In the business world, you're always growing or dying. There is no sitting still. Your firm is always either grabbing a larger market share or growing consumer value, or it is losing market share to competitors and losing customer value. However small the increments, there is always either a loss or gain cycle occurring – there is no standing still.

Likewise, when it comes to bodybuilding, the same motto holds true. You are always either getting better, or worse. Improving or regressing, Growing or shrinking, Bodybuilding requires separate classifications for measuring progress or lack thereof. Here are some categories and rubrics, which can be used to measure the level of hypertrophy vs. atrophy occurring at any given time for a bodybuilder.

Muscle mass

Are you winning or losing muscle mass? If you are steadily increasing lean body mass (LBM) and your muscles are growing, then you are improving. If your LBM has lowered, or your muscles have lost some size, they are being regressing. Change your training or diet protocol immediately to put yourself back on the right track.

Bodyfat levels

Have your body fat% measured once per month using a reliable machine. If you find that it is rising, then take immediate action to curb it. Add cardio or reduce total calories by lower carb and fat intake. If your body fat level is remaining constant while you are adding muscle, then that can be considered positive. You should remain at a constant level. And if your body fat is going down slowly, this is very positive news. You should "hold course" and keep things constant until LBM suffers – then reconsider what you are doing.

Overall health and function

This aspect of bodybuilding health is harder to measure, but more important than the other two aspects combined. Are you remaining healthy as you train, eat, and work to make improvements? Have blood work done regularly to ensure you are keeping healthy while reaching your bodybuilding goals. A finding of no long-term diseases or injuries is definitely a positive, and considered the ultimate goal of life, much less bodybuilding!

Sleep Apnea Surgery

Sleep apnea (apnea from the Greek, meaning "without breath") is a sleep disorder characterized by frequent pauses in breathing during sleep. There are three types of sleep apnea, obstructive, central and mixed. Obstructive is the most common, it is caused by anatomical blockage of the airway, and as such can often be treated by sleep apnea surgery.

Sleep apnea surgery for obstructive sleep apnea consist of several different types of procedures:

1. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty or UPPP, is the most common sleep apnea surgery for adults. The procedure enlarges the airway by removing or shortening the uvula, (tissue that hangs from the roof of the mouth at the back of the throat). The tonsils and adenoids, if present, are also removed as well as part of the soft palate (roof of the mouth).

2. Tonsillectomy and / or adenoidectomy is a sleep apnea surgery that removes the tonsils and / or the adenoids, often the first treatment option for children because enlarged tonsils and adenoids are usually the cause of their sleep apnea.

3. Tracheotomy creates a hole in the windpipe (trachea), and a tube is placed in the hole to allow air in. This sleep apnea surgery, the most effective, is usually reserved for serious apnea sufferers when other treatments have failed. The site around the tube must be cleaned daily to prevent infection.

4. Septoplasy is a sleep apnea surgery that straightens a crooked septum (the partition between the nasal cavities).

5. Laser midline glossectomy and lingualplasty are types of sleep apnea surgery that remove a portion of the tongue.

6. Maxillomandibular osteotomy or enhancement (MMO or MMA) and two-part inferior sagittal mandibular osteotomy. are types of sleep apnea surgery which help enlarge the airway by moving the mandible (jaw) forward These surgeries have high success rates, but last several hours, have a significant recovery period, and potential complications.

7. A relatively new procedure for sleep apnea surgery, performed in the physician's office, is radio frequency ablation (RFTA), trade name SomnoplastyTM. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1998, it shrinks the size of the tongue and / or palate. Multiple treatments may be required, and can be used together with other sleep apnea treatments.

8. The tongue suspension procedure (trade name Repose) is a different sleep apnea surgery procedure. Approved by the FDA in February 1998, this sleep apnea surgery is intended to keep the tongue from falling back over the airway by inserting a small screw into the lower jawbone and stitches below the tongue. Usually performed in conjunction with other procedures, this surgery is potentially reversible. No studies, however, on the long-term success are available, and little clinical data have been published to demonstrate the procedure's effectiveness.

When considering sleep apnea surgery, be aware that effectiveness varies from person to person. Physicians who perform sleep apnea surgery are most commonly otolaryngologists (specializing in the ears, nose, and throat) and oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Obstruction to Breathing
The most frequent cause of obstruction to breathing is the common cold, a condition of such importance that we have devoted several articles to its consideration. Uncomplicated colds rarely last more than a week or two, but the sinus infections which may complicate them are frequently protracted. The other common causes of chronic nasal obstruction are adenoids in children and allergic conditions, nasal polyps, and abnormalities of the nasal septum in older persons. Lasting relief can be expected only by eliminating the cause of the obstruction, whatever this may be. Self-medication merely aggravates the trouble.

Adenoids
Adenoids is the dull, pinched, stupid expression of the mouth breathing child cries for relief. Abnormalities of the Nasal Septum
The septum is the partition between the two sides of the nose. It is composed in part of cartilage and in part of bone. Theoretically the septum should be straight but it is rarely. In fact, a perfectly straight septum is just as rare as an artistically perfect nose. Although most deformities of the septum are of little or no consequence, they are often of sufficient seriousness to interfere with breathing. This not only is annoying but also predisposes to colds and sinus infection. In such cases an operative procedure to straighten the septum is indicated.

Sinus Infection
The term "sinus infection" is now used almost as loosely as nasal catarrh was in the past; many persons who because of some nasal stuffiness think they have sinus infection do not have it at all. On the other hand, sinus infection is of such frequency and seriousness that it merits careful diagnosis and treatment.

The sinuses are cavities in the bones of the face which are connected by small openings with the nasal easily and are lined with mucous membrane which is (continuous with the mucous membrane of the nose. days without much improvement, the infection has extended to the membranes lining the sinuses, especially to the lower sinuses, which do not drain so easily as the upper group. condition will heal promptly as the individual's resistance increases and the natural forces of repair improve under the general measures advisable in these conditions.

The actual cause of sinus disease is infection from the nose, but predisposing factors are violent blowing of the nose, a hypersensitive allergic nasal mucous membrane, diving, swimming with the nose in the water, possibly damp climates, and the promiscuous use of sprays, oils, and antiseptics in the nose during acute colds.

Acute sinus infections often clear up without treatment or with the application of such simple measures as heat, steam inhalations, rest, and improved nasal drainage. Occidentally, however, the infection is so severe or drain so inadequate that pus accumulates in the sinus. This, also, may clear up promptly or it may develop into a sub acute or chronic condition. In acute sinus infection local symptoms of nasal discharge, pain, and headache, as well as general symptoms of fever, fatigue, general aches, and cough, are the rule. In chronic sinus disease, on the other hand, the local symptoms may be absolutely absent. Occidentally infection from a sinus may be transported by the blood to other parts of the body, such as the joints, kidneys, heart, or brain. It is a condition potentially so serious calls for adequate medical supervision and treatment.

Hay Fever
The sneezing, sniffling, and nose blowing, commonly called "hay fever," occurs with greater or less frequency the year round. In fact, hay fever and related allergic conditions, such as asthma, hives, and certain eczema, headaches, and digestive disturbances, occur whenever the substance to which an individual is sensitive gains access to the body in sufficient quantities

The symptoms considered typical of hay fever may be produced by pollen of plants, grasses, or trees, by the dander or hair of animals, by lint, feathers, foods, and many other substances. The pollen, however, are the only substances of this sort which are definitely seasonal. Most cases of spring hay fever are due to grass pollen, although even before the grasses begin to pollinate there are some cases, usually considered spring colds, which are due to the pollen of trees. The pollen of most of the flowering plants is reliably large and heavy and is transported from one plant to another by bees or other insects; hence, they are rarely responsible for hay fever. On the other hand, the pollen of grasses, trees, and many other plants are wind-borne and spell misery to hundreds of thousands of persons each year. Such pollen grains may be transported severe distances and to great heights by air currents.

The most common causes of spring hay fever, frequently called "spring colds" or "rose colds," are the pollen of trees and grasses, while the pollen of ragweed, Wormwood, Russian thistle, and pig weed are responsible for most of the fall hay fever. Goldenrod, long thought to be the cause of fall hay fever, has been exonerated. It and other flowering plants have been suspected in connection with hay fever because they happen to flower at the time that weeds with inconspicuous flowers are pollinating.

After a physician has determined the cause of one's hay fever, the simplest way to prevent it is to live, at least during the half fever season: in a region in which the pollen to which one it sensitive do not exist. Another way to reduce exposure to pollen is to spend most of the day during the hay fever season in filtered air. This gives relief in many cases.

For the unfortunate hay fever victims who can not move away during the hay fever season and whose homes and places of work are not air-conditioned, there is still considerable hope of obtaining relief, for it is usually possible so to increase one's tolerance that one will be free from symptoms or at least reasonably comfortable even though exposed to high concentrations of pollen. This is accomplished by having a series of injections of the pollen to which one is sensitive. In order to be effective this treatment must be based upon an accurate diagnosis of the causes of the hay fever and the inclusion in the treatment substance of all the pollen which are liable for symptoms. Failure to do these two things has been the reason of many of the unsatisfactory results from this type of preventive treatment of hay fever in the past.

Temporary relief in hay fever and other allergic conditions run frequently are obtained by the use of a reliably new group of drugs called antihistamines.

The Tonsils
With so many tonsils being removed one naturally wonders which the tonsils are for. Actually there is no certain evidence as to their purpose, although it is generally thought that they have some sort of protective function, ineffective though this seems to be in most cases.

In childhood, tonsils and adenoids are naturally large but both decrease in size during later life. There are three conditions which make removal of the tonsils and adenoids advised:
(1) repeated attacks of acute tonsillitis or quinsy;
(2) Enlargement of tonsils and adenoids to the point of causing obstruction to the nose or the Eustachian tube;
(3) Reasonable suspicion that the tonsils are serving as a focus of infection. In the event of a serious disease condition in which other possible focus of infection has been eliminated, it is sometimes advisable to sacrifice the tonsils even though the local condition does not offer adequate proof of tonsil infection.

Miraculous results can not be expected from removal of the tonsils; but when definite indications for tonsillectomy exist, sufficient improvement may be expected to amply justify the Operation. Tonsillectomy is not a dangerous procedure if adequate precautions are taken to safeguard against accident. Undoubtedly many tonsils have been needlessly removed in the past and more will be sacrificed in the future. On the other hand, the indications for the removal of tonsils and adenoids are being more accurately defined and medical opinion on the subject of tonsillectomy is becoming more and more conservative.

Cityscapes in Modern Art

For many modern artists, one of the most potent symbols of man’s dislocation and separation from nature is the cityscape. For others, the cityscape symbolizes man’s new freedom from the drudgery of agriculture. By the 1930s and 1940s, images of the cityscape had begun to replace landscape art. Additionally, the view from the airplane, or from the Eiffel Tower, or from any of the growing number of skyscrapers around the world, had revealed a flat, patterned cityscape where recession, depth and naturalistic perspective had once reigned supreme.

The slums and wretched conditions were a part of virtually every cityscape and had inspired a new generation of architects to search for ways of building and a means of town planning which they believed would bring about positive social change. The machine was here to stay, and eventually individual artists as well as the influential and socially committed Bauhaus art school proclaimed their positive attitudes towards man’s new cityscape environment filled with both vehicles and machines.

Technology had also created new materials for the architect of the cityscape including steel, concrete and sheet glass, which would result in drastically different designs for public buildings and private homes and grant the much sought-after freedom from the past. Perhaps the anti-individualistic aspects of machine-produced objects could prove to be beneficial rather than harmful. After all, the collective individualism of national pride had resulted in a catastrophic war. A universal, supranational and anti-individualistic style for the new cityscape might help to unite man in a utopian brotherhood.

The materials of the modern age and the new cityscape style went hand-in-hand. Steel frames provided a modular grid which gave an almost unlimited verticality to the new architecture. Reinforced concrete allowed for expressive forms, and sheet glass permitted the creation of pure reflecting prisms described around the world in mystical terms.

The lack of ornamentation in prefabricated designs played a major role in the formation of an art which attempted to become a vehicle for universal values. This lack of ornamentation was further proclaimed as essential for the establishing of the newly spiritualized world order. Adolf Loos (1870-1933), ornamentation’s most virulent critic, insisted that this stylistic change alone would remake society.

According to Loos’ theory, the labor formerly wasted on ornamentation would be unnecessary. Less work would result in higher wages and a shorter workday. Class lines would ultimately be abolished. The simplified designs suitable for mass-production would return the machine to it’s rightful place as man’s servant. The cities of the world would be clean and orderly, with cityscapes built of rectangles and squares.

The aesthetic of mechanical simplicity and right angles in architecture had a direct counterpart in the sphere of painting. Piet Mondrian, a native of Holland, began his mature work with a variation of Cubism which was based on images in nature: the sea, sand dunes, the sky, and trees.

Mondrian’s desire to contribute to the spiritualizing of civilization grew in part from his Theosophical leanings. Like the architects of the International Style, he, too, sought the centrality and essence of an art stripped of peripherals. Beauty was not heavy and monumental like the ponderous public buildings and over-worked paintings of the past, but practical, light and ephemeral.

Mondrian’s striving for spiritual clarification in his work led him to a grammar of shape based strictly on horizontals and verticals. By this means, he achieved a remarkable degree of energy and vibrancy in his art. Mondrian was not threatened by the advent of the machine. The machine had not completely dehumanized man as other artists had prophesied so emphatically. Furthermore, the cities created by industrialization, especially Mondrian’s beloved New York, were not dysfunctional but dynamic and liberating.

Mondrian was part of an idealistic group of artists in the Netherlands known as De Stijl or “the style.” De Stijl’s creed was a combination of total abstraction, a minimum of creative terms, and restriction to the primary colors of red, yellow and blue and the non-colors of black, gray and white. Mondrian’s missionary zeal for a higher level of harmony in art had taken him beyond the bounds of Cubism.

One of Mondrian’s last paintings, “Broadway Boogie Woogie” (1942-3), a large oil on canvas, exemplifies many aspects of his masterful technique. Only the title reveals the reference to the external reality of the cityscape. Mondrian’s interpretation of the New York street grid is joyful and colorful. In Mondrian’s work, the loose spontaneity of other modern artists has been rarefied and ordered.

Man no longer looks at technology as an omnipotent, mystical savior. On the other hand, the dark phantom of man disfigured by his association with the machine has also vanished with the light of the new era.

Man has achieved balance and creativity on a higher level. He is no longer dependent on either the natural world or the manufactured one. Mondrian’s vision is one of abstraction resulting in the revelation of a type of universal electricity which supersedes both organic and mechanical energy.

Mondrian’s grid fills the canvas, but also contains large amounts of space and air. Perhaps the disciplined rhythm of the machine, modern life and the cityscape holds within itself an even greater freedom than the prior vicissitudinous cycles of agrarian living.

The rhythm of Mondrian’s image is accelerated and syncopated, but doomsday fears of life driven out of control by the frenzied pace of the machine and man numbed by repetition, monotony, and noise have not been realized. Man has has adapted to the technological environment and is alive and thriving after all.

Mondrian’s composition is balanced with almost mathematical precision. The space has now been completely flattened. Yet somehow Mondrian’s rectangles and squares flash continuously with a voltage born of almost gymnastic geometry.

Are the squares in Broadway Boogie Woogie intended as symbols of cars or buildings or sidewalks or traffic lights or flashing neon signs? No matter, man has mastered all of the various aspects of his new, technological life. Like a child confidant in a now familiar environment and his own well-developed skills, man can build the future he envisions with the colorful building blocks of his mind and imagination.

Mondrian has reduced life and art to the bare essentials. Variations on a single shape are combined with only three colors and white. He has omitted even the black and gray of other De Stijl artists. Mondrian’s ability to triumph artistically in spite of these restrictions sends a clear and reassuring message of hope.

Although technology has impacted culture irrefutably, the creativity and genius of man has been able to flower even within the narrowest of confines. Technology and subsequent rise of the city has neither destroyed man nor been his savior, but has instead acted as an impetus for the refinement of his ideas about life and his own nature.
