Dr. Frederick Wolfe, the director of the National Databank for Rheumatic Diseases and the lead author of the 1990 paper that first defined the diagnostic guidelines for fibromyalgia, says he has become cynical and discouraged about the diagnosis. He now considers the condition a physical response to stress, depression, and economic and social anxiety. "

Dr. Wolfe goes on to say, "Some of us in those days thought that we had actually identified a disease, which this is clearly not."

"… other doctors – including (Dr. Wolfe) the one who wrote the 1990 paper that defined fibromyalgia but who has since changed his mind – say that the disease does not exist and that Lyrica and the other drugs will be taken by millions of people who do not need them. "

Just when I was optimistic that the traditional medical community was finally getting the message that fibromyalgia is a very real and very serious illness, this kind of short-sighted, arrogant, and simple-minded myth raises its ugly head once again. This bit of news, by a prominent rheumatologist, is not a huge surprise. When was the last time you visited your rheumatologist (after waiting months to be seen) and felt like they understood your fibromyalgia? And if they did believe you had fibromyalgia, were they helpful?

Probably not, since their answer is to recommend more and more drugs, year end and year out. The side effects of these drugs begin to add up and pretty soon you realize your fibromyalgia symptoms are not much better, and worse, you've got additional symptoms from all those meds.

I've repeatedly been asked to give my opinion on the over-hyped new drug for fibromyalgia, Lyrica. I've kept quiet for two reasons. One, I wanted to give Lyrica the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately Lyrica has proven to be ineffective for the majority of my patients, as well as the fibromyalgia sufferers I'm in contact with around the world. Secondly, I thought at least Pfizer's multi-million dollar drug campaign would help the public understand the pain fibromyalgia patients experience day in and day out. Surely the TV and print ads would help others realize that yes there is such a thing as fibromyalgia, here are the symptoms, and this is why aunt Jane feels so miserable each day.

According to the New York Times, worldwide sales of Lyrica reached $ 1.8 billion in 2007, up 50 percent from 2006. Analysts predict sales will rise an additional 30 percent this year, helped by consumer advertising. During the first nine months of 2007, Pfizer spent $ 46 million on Lyrica ads.

Sadly, The New York Times and other print media have elected to take a different slant. Instead of helping dispel the myth that those with fibromyalgia are crazy, lazy, or depressed, they've elected to focus on the minimum of doctors who think fibromyalgia is not real.

As I lecture and interact with doctors throughout North America, I routinely encounter doctors who do not believe fibromyalgia exists, but the number has steadily declined. But now this article comes out and what will the public think?

More on Lyrica

Lyrica is the first prescription medication approved to treat fibromyalgia. Pfizer's Lyrica, commonly known as pregabalin, binds to receptors in the brain and spinal cord and seems to reduce activity in the central nervous system. But, no one knows exactly how Lyrica works.

Some say that Lyrica does not work well enough to have warranted its FDA approval. In 2004, the FDA as a remedy for diabetic nerve pain, reviewed Lyrica. The reviewers recommended against approving the drug, citing its side effects. But the FDA ignored the advice of Lyrica reviewers, and approved it anyway. Then Pfizer asked the FDA to expand the approved uses of Lyrica to include the treatment of fibromyalgia, and the agency did so in June.

According to in clinical trials, patients taking Lyrica reported that their pain fell on average about 2 points on a 10-point scale, compared with 1 point for patients taking a placebo. Not a big deal to say the least.

About 30 percent of patients said their pain fell by at least half, compared with 15 percent taking placebos.

The study involved 75 participants took Lyrica and 75 took a sugar pill or placebo. So 38 of those taking Lyrica had at least a 50% in pain. But 23 participants taking a placebo had at least a 50% reduction in pain. Lyrica was helpful for 15 more participants than a sugar pill. But, at what cost?

Lyrica causes gain gain and edema, or swelling, as well as dizziness and sleepiness. According to the New York Times, in 12-week trials, 9 percent of patients saw their weight rise more than 7 percent, and the weight gain appeared to continue over-time. Of the individuals being studied 23 of them were asked to apply on juice to the scalp two times daily for two months while the other 15 were asked to just apply regular water twice daily for two months.

The study showed that people who were in the occasion juice test group began to see some form of hair growth after using the treatment for two weeks and by the time 4 weeks had passed 17 of them (73.9%) had begun to experience some hair growth . Then by the sixth week a total of 20 of the people (86.9%) in the onion juice group were now experiencing some form of hair growth. Also improvement was significantly higher in the men in the group than the women and during the whole 8 week (two month) trial only two people in the tap water group not any hair growth.

In comparing the use of Manuka Honey dressings with topical antiseptics on wound infections, it has been found that Manuka Honey dressings significantly reduce the amount of fluid exuding from the wound. Bodybuilding Guide – Hypertrophy vs Atrophy

In the business world, you're always growing or dying. There is no sitting still. Your firm is always either grabbing a larger market share or growing consumer value, or it is losing market share to competitors and losing customer value. However small the increments, there is always either a loss or gain cycle occurring – there is no standing still.

Likewise, when it comes to bodybuilding, the same motto holds true. You are always either getting better, or worse. Improving or regressing, Growing or shrinking, Bodybuilding requires separate classifications for measuring progress or lack thereof. Here are some categories and rubrics, which can be used to measure the level of hypertrophy vs. atrophy occurring at any given time for a bodybuilder.

Muscle mass

Are you winning or losing muscle mass? If you are steadily increasing lean body mass (LBM) and your muscles are growing, then you are improving. If your LBM has lowered, or your muscles have lost some size, they are being regressing. Change your training or diet protocol immediately to put yourself back on the right track.

Bodyfat levels

Have your body fat% measured once per month using a reliable machine. If you find that it is rising, then take immediate action to curb it. Add cardio or reduce total calories by lower carb and fat intake. If your body fat level is remaining constant while you are adding muscle, then that can be considered positive. You should remain at a constant level. And if your body fat is going down slowly, this is very positive news. You should "hold course" and keep things constant until LBM suffers – then reconsider what you are doing.

Overall health and function

This aspect of bodybuilding health is harder to measure, but more important than the other two aspects combined. Are you remaining healthy as you train, eat, and work to make improvements? Have blood work done regularly to ensure you are keeping healthy while reaching your bodybuilding goals. A finding of no long-term diseases or injuries is definitely a positive, and considered the ultimate goal of life, much less bodybuilding!

Sleep Apnea Surgery

Sleep apnea (apnea from the Greek, meaning "without breath") is a sleep disorder characterized by frequent pauses in breathing during sleep. There are three types of sleep apnea, obstructive, central and mixed. Obstructive is the most common, it is caused by anatomical blockage of the airway, and as such can often be treated by sleep apnea surgery.

Sleep apnea surgery for obstructive sleep apnea consist of several different types of procedures:

1. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty or UPPP, is the most common sleep apnea surgery for adults. The procedure enlarges the airway by removing or shortening the uvula, (tissue that hangs from the roof of the mouth at the back of the throat). The tonsils and adenoids, if present, are also removed as well as part of the soft palate (roof of the mouth).

2. Tonsillectomy and / or adenoidectomy is a sleep apnea surgery that removes the tonsils and / or the adenoids, often the first treatment option for children because enlarged tonsils and adenoids are usually the cause of their sleep apnea.

3. Tracheotomy creates a hole in the windpipe (trachea), and a tube is placed in the hole to allow air in. This sleep apnea surgery, the most effective, is usually reserved for serious apnea sufferers when other treatments have failed. The site around the tube must be cleaned daily to prevent infection.

4. Septoplasy is a sleep apnea surgery that straightens a crooked septum (the partition between the nasal cavities).

5. Laser midline glossectomy and lingualplasty are types of sleep apnea surgery that remove a portion of the tongue.

6. Maxillomandibular osteotomy or enhancement (MMO or MMA) and two-part inferior sagittal mandibular osteotomy. are types of sleep apnea surgery which help enlarge the airway by moving the mandible (jaw) forward These surgeries have high success rates, but last several hours, have a significant recovery period, and potential complications.

7. A relatively new procedure for sleep apnea surgery, performed in the physician's office, is radio frequency ablation (RFTA), trade name SomnoplastyTM. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1998, it shrinks the size of the tongue and / or palate. Multiple treatments may be required, and can be used together with other sleep apnea treatments.

8. The tongue suspension procedure (trade name Repose) is a different sleep apnea surgery procedure. Approved by the FDA in February 1998, this sleep apnea surgery is intended to keep the tongue from falling back over the airway by inserting a small screw into the lower jawbone and stitches below the tongue. Usually performed in conjunction with other procedures, this surgery is potentially reversible. No studies, however, on the long-term success are available, and little clinical data have been published to demonstrate the procedure's effectiveness.

When considering sleep apnea surgery, be aware that effectiveness varies from person to person. Physicians who perform sleep apnea surgery are most commonly otolaryngologists (specializing in the ears, nose, and throat) and oral and maxillofacial surgeons.
