Natural Tonics for Health and Wellness

I'm a great believer in natural tonics to strengthen or invigorate the healing system. – Dr. Andrew Weil

The American Heritage Dictionary says that a tonic is …

… an agent, such as a medication, that restores or increases body tone, an invigorating, refreshing, ororative agent or influence. And a tonic is for producing or stimulating physical, mental, or emotional vigor.

Tonics are typically liquid preparations that have a combination of herbs, vitamins, minerals and other ingredients. No tonic has any magical healing effect on any disease. That may seem to be a strange thing to say in an article about Natural Tonics for Health and Wellness . Let me explain.

The only thing that can heal a body is the body itself. Nature has designed a self repair system for the human body that will accomplish the seeming miraculous. Most of the time all we have to do is stay out of the way.

Sometimes a toxic agent, biological or chemical, can overwhelm the body's capacity to heal itself. Medical science can assist by removing any overload. The body itself then takes over and does the actual healing. A tonic acts to supply the body's repair mechanism with missing nutrients so that it functions at its best.

Is it possible to help the body by supplying things it needs to do its job? Of course it is. Ordinarily these nutrients come from the foods we eat. Often our foods do not contain all the nutrients they should, for whatever reason. This is why we are beginning to see the medical profession suggesting we take a good multi vitamin and mineral supplement daily. Before this, our ancestors learned through experience, the value of getting certain substances into the body. They made tonics to supply these substances. Natural tonics can fill the gaps in our nutrition. Our own bodies will then do the rest.

You can find recipes for tonsics that are made with just about any thing under the sun. Usually natural tonics are made with some single herb or a combination of herbs. Some of the more common are garlic, ginseng, ginger, and green tea. Mushrooms are also used as tonics. Chinese caterpillar fungus (Cordyceps sinensis) improves athletic performance and increases energy. Species like reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), shitake (Lentinella edodes), and maitake (Grifola frondosa) are used to boost immunity.

Even plain water can be a tonic for someone who is suffering from dehydration. After all, the human body is made up of 55 to 75 percent water.

It would seem the best way to incorporate all the minerals your body needs is to have a tonic made with something like seawater, but you can not drink seawater. The salt content will kill you.

If you went to school in the 1960's you might remember watching an educational film called Hemo the Magnificent . Hemo was the cartoon god of blood and with the real-life Dr. Frank C. Baxter, they made several films for Disney. Hemo proclaims that he's the mysterious source of life, and the good doctor informs him, "You know what you are? You're just seawater!"

So like the seas that are essential to all life on earth, our blood is essentially seawater too. Science speculates that life began in the sea. Amniotic fluid is almost identical to seawater.

Rene Quinton, a French physicist, performed a famous study on the effects of seawater. Quinton experiments proved seawater and blood plasma are remarkably similar in composition. As a result, Quinton said, "All living organisms are in fact a marine aquarium." He said seawater should be used to heal.

Because of the complete nutrient content of seawater, sea vegetables, growing in clean seawater, supply all of the minerals necessary for life. Sea vegetables have more minerals than any land plant. Between 7 and 38 percent of the dry weight of sea vegetables are minerals.

Any kind of high quality natural tonic made with sea vegetables should supply the body with every mineral it needs to function at its best. That just makes sense does not it?

Many illnesses can be traced to mineral imbalances in the body. Minerals are responsible for many functions in our bodies, such as helping to keep our body repair systems working. Adequate minerals should be ingested every day.

Unlike medicines, which can have an immediate effect on symptoms, you may not see immediate results with tonics. Allowed your body to heal itself may take some time. Use a tonic regularly for a few months. You are letting your body do what it knows how to do. Give it what needs and trust it to heal itself.

See if you have an increased sense of well-being or more energy when taking a tonic. Even if you do not notice immediate effects, pay attention to how you respond to physical and emotional stress. See if you become less susceptible to illnesses. Give natural tonics an honest try.

Facts About Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation

Recovering from a stroke can take months or years for some and a few weeks for others. The amount of time stroke recovery takes is determined mostly by the amount of damaged caused from the stroke. There are many devices and products that aid in stroke recovery. There are only a few real stroke recovery options that are effective at aid in optimal recovery for strike victims. You should know the facts about stroke and the prevention and risk factors involved when dealing with strokes.

The biggest risk factors of stroke are smoking, improper diet, lack of exercise, genetics and various health conditions. The first recommendation of almost any doctor is to stop smoking. If you are overweight, you will need to lose weight and if you have any kind of serious health condition, make sure to monitor it closely. Stroke treatment should start with prevention and education. Once you understand the risk factors involved in strokes, you will want to find out the preventive measures you can take to avoid a stroke.

Keeping your heart healthy by eating right, getting an adequate amount of exercise (you do not have to overdo), making sure to get restful sleep and addressing any health issues that might lead to a stroke. Remember to see your doctor before you begin any diet or exercise program. Even too much diet and exercise can be detrimental to your heart and brain.

What are some of the after effects of a stroke? One of the most common after effects involves the mouth and throat area. Many times after a stroke, the sufferer may have difficulty swallowing. This disorder is called dysphagia and the levels can vary depending on the strength of the stroke. Dysphagia requires treatment and rehab just like any other after affect such as the loss of the use of an arm or hand.

Besides the more common after effects of stroke, other complications, though less common, can occur. Some related diseases that can occur after a stroke include paralysis of movement (this can be from a hand to a whole side or region), loss of memory and cognitive ability, dementia, emotional disorders and deep vein thrombosis. In some cases of stroke, the victim continues to have mini strokes called TIA's caused by the brain damage of a more severe stroke. Special Stroke recovery techniques are used to help the victim overcome the debilitating after effects of a stroke. If you are at risk, or you have already suffered a stroke, get the information you need for prevention and treatments.

A Summary About Hair Loss – DHT and Androgenetic Alopecia

Androgenetic Alopecia is the most common form of thinning hair in men, but is also a surprisingly common cause of female hair loss. Often known as Male Pattern Baldness, it results when:

1. Hair loss occurs at an abnormally high rate;
2. Hair replacement occurs at an abnormally slow rate;
3. Normal hairs are replaced by smaller, thinner hairs, called "miniaturization"

Androgenetic Alopecia affects approximately 30% of men before they reach the age of 30, and 50% of males over the age of 50. More surprisingly, it also affects 40% of women over the age of 50.

The causes of Androgenetic Alopecia are still not fully understood, although as its name suggests, it is widely thought to involve both hormonal (Androgens are hormones) and genetic causes. Of the many hormones that regulate hair on the scalp, Androgens have the largest effect.

Of the androgenic hormones, Testosterone and Dihdrotestosterone (DHT) have the greatest effect on hair loss. Testosterone is converted to DHT by enzymes all over the body, but there are high concentrations of these enzymes in the scalp, and especially inside the hair follicle. DHT is the active form of testosterone that interacts with your body's signaling pathways. In hair loss, DHT stimulates the mechanism that stops hair growth, and begins the hair's Catagen and Telogen Phases.

The genetic aspect of this may be twofold. Firstly there is evidence that some populations have higher basal concenrations of DHT, they simply have more naturally. This, like many hormonal differences, is probably genetically inherited. Also, there is a theory that a set of genes could make some people's hair follicles more sensitive to DHT. This means some people react more strongly to increase in DHT, and lose hair, while others do not from lose hair the same change in hormone level. However, even if you are genetically predisposed to thinning hair, there is no guarantee you will have it, in the same way that people in families with thinning hair often do not suffer from it.

Many women find that the hair on their head is thinning during menopause or pregnancy – this is due to changes in the levels of the hormone DHT in the scalp. Thinning hair in women is often referred to as hormonal hair loss rather than Androgenetic alopecia, but they are in fact the same condition.

In men, DHT is very important for reaching maturity; it is DHT that causes body and facial hair to begin growing. Later in life however, these same Androgens (primarily DHT) are responsible for the reduction in size of the follicles in the scalp.

The longer the hair follicle is kept in the presence of DHT, the more miniaturized the follicle becomes. Miniaturisation is caused by the shortening of the Anagen or growth phase, and is when the hair itself becomes shorter and thinner. DHT also increases the rate of hair loss by signaling to the hair to reach Telogen phase sooner, so more hair is lost is well; these factors combined give noticeable thinning hair.

If treatment is not administrated, this process continues, the follicles progressively become shorter and less visible, and some will eventually close completely and stop growing.

DHT is integral to the majority of androgenetic alopecia sufferer's problems. So it is clear that any hair loss treatment should begin by removing DHT or relieving the effects of DHT. There are many products available to inhibit DHT formation, the prescription option Finasteride is very effective, but unfortunately there is a wide variety of severe side effects, and can not be used by women. There are a variety of alternatives to Finasteride available; some like saw palmetto also prevent DHT production, and some like Minoxidil or Superoxide Dismutases work in a different way to reverse the effects of DHT.

Stroke Rehabilitation and Exercise After a CVA

If you or someone you love has had a stroke or CVA you will have an idea of the changes that can occur. Whether these changes are physical or psychological affecting emotions they have to be understood and allowed for during recovery. Some of the physical changes will be explained but do not forget the importance of helping yourself. Remember also that often at least initially, thinking processes can be affected which may make comprehension more difficult.

After a stroke either the left or right side of your body does not work properly to some degree. This has a large effect on your proprioception or sense of where your body is. You lose your ability to know where the middle is. Your brain interprets it as being towards the non-affected side because of the loss of use of your paralysed arm or leg. This has to be combated initially quite simply by making sure you lean to your affected, paralysed side. This stimulates the brain and stops it forgetting the affected side.

In the initial phases of stroke rehabilitation particular attention is paid to being able to sit up, stand up and eventually start walking. A physiotherapist is very important in guiding you through this stressful period. The stroke sufferer must be positive and help as much as possible in their own recovery. Without this active rehabilitation the chances of good recovery drop sharply. Our muscles are there to be used, not ignored.

If you have difficulty moving your arm it's essential that physical therapy focuses on your shoulder. You need all the muscles both in front and behind the shoulder to get working and hold you're the joint joint in place. Cushions or pillows are used when you're sat down and a sling of some form when you're standing and hopefully walking.

A recent new and welcome development is the use of electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) to speed recovery after a CVA. It is particularly helpful when used on the shoulder muscles in both building up strength and preventing shoulder subluxation.

Muscle stimulators are small, battery powered and use small currents to gently stimulate muscles. Research has shown that the brain is very good at 'forgetting' a paralysed limb, as the normal flow of information from the paralleled limb into the brain ceases. By using muscular stimulation you strata the information flowing back to the brain, which aids recovery.

An unused muscle soon becomes stiff and painful which makes it difficult to move. Regular muscle stimulation relaxes and strengthens your muscles and helps speed your rehabilitation. The stimulators are easy to use and do not require physiotherapist supervision so you can use them everyday.

They are particularly good at stimulating the muscles involved in wrist and finger movement and help to minimize stiffness in the hands and fingers. Finally remember that a positive outlook helps so much so always be encouraging and believe in your stroke rehabilitation success.

Nikola Tesla Discovery! (Pemf) 100 Years of Technology – Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy

PEMF 100 Year History! Pulsed Electromagnetic Field History!

Five hundred years ago, Paracelsus a Swiss physician and alchemist, wondered if diseases could be manipulated by magnets, using lodestones as the best magnets available then.

But, natural lodestones are quite weak and few people paid much attention to his ideas until the discovery of carbon-steel magnets in the 1700′s. During the 1800′s, most of the discoveries relating electricity to magnetism were made by the early pioneers of our modern technical world, men such as Gauss, Weber, Faraday and Maxwell among others One of the more interesting magnetic theories postulates something called “Magnetic Field Deficiency Syndrome.” It is offered as an explanation of biomagnetic effects by Dr. Kyochi Nakagawa of Japan. The Earth’s magnetic field is not fixed in position or strength. In the last hundred years, it has weakened on the average by about 6 percent. In the last thousand years, it has fallen nearly 30 percent.

Dr. Nakagawa argues that since humans evolved in a magnetic field, it is necessary for proper health. A falling magnetic field puts us at risk and magnetic therapy makes up the deficit. The truth is, no one really understands the mechanisms by which magnetic fields affect human health.

There are many theories but very little agreement. It is a problem as complicated as a human being, concerning dozens of organs and thousands of different molecules. Just because you can’t explain something, doesn’t mean it can’t happen. For two hundred years, it has been possible to build magnets from coils of wire powered by electricity called electromagnets. Such devices can be pulsed to produce magnetic fields that change very rapidly. This opens a whole new world of medical applications since changing magnetic fields can induce tiny electrical currents in human tissue. Pulsing electromagnetic therapy is approved by the FDA to promote the healing of serious bone fractures. And powerful electromagnets are used in brain and muscle research to generate currents strong enough to fire nerves that trigger sensations and flex muscles. To date, there have been many basic research studies and many clinical trials of Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy.

Historically, as far back as 1890, the American Electro-Therapeutic Association conducted annual conferences on the therapeutic use of electricity and electrical devices by physicians on ailing patients. Some involved current flow through the patient, while others were electrically powered devices. At first, only direct current (DC) devices were utilized in the medical doctor’s office for relieving pain.

PEMF has a long history dating back 100 years to Nicola Tesla

More PEMF Facts and History

The Greek physician Galen noted the cleansing powers of magnetism in his book De Simplicum Medicamentorum Temperamentis Ac Facultatibus around 200 B.C. The word magnet comes from the ancient Greek magnes lithos, meaning “stone from Magnesia,” an area of Greece that was known for its volcanic rocks with magnetic attributes.

We now know the mineral in these rocks is magnetite. Magnetic therapy was already practiced in China around 2000 B.C., as recorded in The Yellow Emperor’s Book of Internal Medicine. In that ancient medical text, “magnetic stones” were advocated to correct health imbalances. (Lawrence 1998/1) In the Middle Ages magnetic treatment was delivered by placing “lodestones” on the body. Lodestones, or “guiding stones,” were so named because of their use in navigational compasses by Viking, European and Arab sailors.

At the end of the 19th century the electron was discovered and electro-magnetism was brought into the realm of science on the atomic level. Albert Einstein showed that electricity and magnetism are not discrete phenomena, but different aspects of the same phenomenon. (Encyclopedia Britannica Vol. 18 15th Ed. 1991/2) Medical textbooks included magnetism and electricity as therapeutic alternatives for insomnia, fatigue, arthritis, pain and convulsions. Magnetic boots, rings, girdles, caps and ointments were available in mail-order catalogues. At the same time Daniel David Palmer, Canadian fishmonger turned “magnetic healer” founded Palmer’s School of Magnetic Cure in Davenport, Iowa. When in 1895 he began applying short-lever manipulations to the spine with great effect, the Palmer School of Chiropractic was born.

Mention the word “magnet” and the word “therapy” together in the same sentence in North America today and many people start to backpedal. Several historical events explain why this is so. Magnetic therapy became shrouded in mystery in part because of Franz Anton Mesmer, an 18th century German physician and mathematician. He wrote his doctoral thesis on gravitational fields in human health. He postulated that the body had “magnetic poles” and that these poles move out of alignment with the universal magnetic flow causing all illness. He called magnetism within the body “animal magnetism.” His patients sometimes fainted or went into convulsions in his Paris salon, claiming that they had been “mesmerized.” Mesmer’s notions of magnetism gradually became equated with hypnotic suggestion.

Magnetic therapy as a branch of medicine and as an area of clinical research fell into further disfavor in North America as a result of the Abraham Flexner’s report on “Medical Education in the United States and Canada,” released in 1908. At the time of the Flexner Report, Drs. Will and Charlie Mayo, with their father, William Worrall Mayo, were still in the early years of the world’s first group medical practice in the Minnesota frontier town of Rochester. The Mayo Clinic was an impressive display of great wisdom and forethought. By contrast, leaches, bloodlettings, elixirs and potions were also commonplace in most other parts of the United States and Canada. The rise in power of political medicine and the shift to nearly 100% dependence on pharmaceuticals for health led to an unfortunate period of dormancy, lasting 60 years, until the mid 1970s.

Beginning immediately after World War II, Japan began generating various electromagnetic wave shapes by changing electrical currents. This modality quickly moved to Europe, first in Romania and the former Soviet Union. From 1960 to 1985, nearly every European country designed and manufactured its own magnetic therapy systems. Todorov published the first book on modern electromagnetic field therapy in 1982 in Bulgaria. This work summarized clinical observations using magnetic fields to treat 2700 patients with 33 different pathologies.

The modern clinical application of electro-biology in North America began in 1971 when Friedenberg described their success in the healing of a nonunion fracture treated with 10 micro amps of direct current delivered with stainless steel electrodes. Avoiding the invasive nature of Friedenberg’s direct currents, Dr. Andrew Bassett at Columbia University Medical Center introduced a new approach for the treatment of non-healing bone fractures and pseudarthroses that employed very specific, biphasic low frequency electromagnetic signals. Public awareness also increased in the mid-1970s amidst reports of successful enhancement of the speed and endurance of racehorses treated with electromagnetic fields. Based on the published work of Dr. Bassett, in 1979 the FDA allowed electromagnetic fields to be used in the USA for non-union and delayed union fractures. A decade later the FDA allowed the use of pulsed radiofrequency electromagnetic fields for the treatment of pain and edema in superficial soft tissues. It is now commonly accepted that weak electromagnetic fields are capable of initiating various beneficial biological processes including healing for delayed fractures, pain relief, and modulation of muscle tone and spasm.

Having healthy cells is not a passive process. Active, regular tuning-up of our cells is not only feasible, but also necessary to slow aging and reduce the risk of cell dysfunction. We are, after all, only as healthy as our cells. Imperceptible cell dysfunction that is not corrected early can lead to disease. Fine-tuning can be done daily in only minutes, using pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs). In addition, when there is a known imbalance (when symptoms are present) or there is a known disease or condition, PEMF treatments, used either alone or along with other therapies, can often help cells rebalance dysfunction faster.

PEMF works to:

· Reduce pain, inflammation, the effects of stress on the body, and platelet adhesion.

· Improve energy, circulation, blood and tissue oxygenation, sleep quality, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, the uptake of nutrients, cellular detoxification and the ability to regenerate cells.

· Balance the immune system and stimulate RNA and DNA.

· Accelerate repair of bone and soft tissue.

· Relax muscles.

PEMFs have been used extensively for decades for many conditions and medical disciplines, and results can be seen in animals as well as humans. The National Institutes of Health have made PEMFs a priority for research. In fact, many PEMF devices have already been approved by the FDA, some specifically to fuse broken bones, wound healing, pain and tissue swelling, and treat depression. Most therapeutic PEMF devices are considered safe by various standards and organizations.

What are PEMFs and how do they work?

Science teaches us that everything is energy. Energy is always dynamic and, therefore, has a frequency; it changes by the second or minute, for example, at the very least.

All energy is electromagnetic in nature. All atoms, chemicals and cells produce electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Every organ in the body produces it own signature bio electromagnetic field. Science has proven that our bodies actually project their own magnetic fields and that all 70 trillion cells in the body communicate via electromagnetic frequencies. Nothing happens in the body without an electromagnetic exchange. When the electromagnetic activity of the body ceases, life ceases.

Physics, that is, electromagnetic energy, controls chemistry. This in turn controls tissue function. Disruption of electromagnetic energy in cells causes impaired cell metabolism, whatever the initial cause. This happens anywhere in the disease process.

PEMFs address impaired chemistry and thus the function of cells – which in turn, improves health. PEMFs deliver beneficial, health-enhancing EMFs and frequencies to the cells. Low frequency PEMFs of even the weakest strengths pass right through the body, penetrating every cell, tissue, organ and even bone without being absorbed or altered! As they pass through, they stimulate most of the electrical and chemical processes in the tissues. Therapeutic PEMFs are specifically designed to positively support cellular energy, resulting in better cellular health and function.

Devices that produce PEMFs vary by a number of important features: frequency, waveform, strength, and types of stimulators. Frequencies can be simple or complex; and high, medium or low. Intensity can also be high, medium or low.

No “one-size” treatment fits all situations. Most PEMF devices help to varying degrees depending on the problem or condition, but selecting the wrong device may produce unsatisfactory results. Since the body is complex, PEMFs are ideal devices to be able get good results without needing a myriad of different treatments.

Most people recognize that oxygen, food, and water are extremely essential aspects of well being. Interestingly, very few folks understand that Magnetic Resonance Stimulation, (sometimes referred to as “MRS” or PEMF with means “Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields”), is also crucial for every living thing on Earth. Actually NASA, (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and RKA, (the Russian Federal Space Agency), have been using MRS and PEMF Therapy to help prevent magnetic deficiency disorders in their space-traveling explorers for many years. And, since the earliest space missions, many studies have shown that living human tissue and cells absolutely need PEMF.When these magnetic fields are so important to life as we know it, why haven’t you heard of PEMF or MRS as often as you have the need to drive 8 glasses of water a day? Great question. In the past, people didn’t really need to concern themselves with PEMF.

The Earth supplied adequate amounts and people lived a lot differently than we do now. They were outdoors more often and always receiving sufficient quantities of MRS naturally.Recently, however, modern life has changed the way humans interact with nature and people have altered the Earth’s ability to produce PEMF. People have realized the benefits of PEMF Therapy and have increasingly sought out answers. In the past, man lived outside or in buildings made of natural materials, (such as huts and adobe homes).

Humans also spent a lot of time outside farming crops and hunting. But now, many people spend large quantities of time inside metal and concrete buildings. They work in them, shop in them, and go home to sleep in them. Many people no longer need to farm or hunt and may spend as little as 10% of their time actually outdoors. In the past, people travelled by horseback or on camels or other animals – outside and in touch with nature. But today, we find ourselves increasingly stuck in cars and subway cars and other metal and plastic and man-made modes of transportation. People also wear shoes, often with rubber soles rather than walking around barefoot or in shoes made from natural materials. All of these things separate us from the Earth’s natural PEMF.Additionally, the PEMF that our planet IS producing is actually about 50% weaker than it was in the 1700?s. The reasons for this decline are unclear but some scientists believe it is linked to other environmental issues. Our modern lives also bombard us with unnatural, (aka “bad”) PEMF from PCs, laptops, notebooks, cellular telephones, TVs, mp3 players and other devices. Our bodies are being assaulted on all sides and may be literally starving for PEMF. PEMF bed supplies users with all-natural,

Earth based PEMF.This device allows peoples to bask in a relaxing bath of natural PEMF which allows to recharge the body’s batteries by restoring a natural balance to the body. The PEMF has been shown to be able to increase energy, improve mental focus, reduce pain, reduce inflammation, and allow folks to sleep better at night. It has also been a successful way to help prevent certain illnesses and even helps to facilitate relaxation and enhance people’s mood.

They can be. Evidence is mounting that a new form of pollution called “electrosmog” is a very real threat because it is disruptive to cell metabolism. Manmade, unnatural EMFs come from electrical wiring and equipment, for example, power lines, communications towers, computers, TVs, cell phones – everything from the wiring in our homes to fluorescent lighting to microwave ovens, hair dryers, clock radios, electric blankets and more.

Electrosmog EMFs are not designed with the body in mind. They can be a strong inducer of stress in the body and, therefore, drain our energy. Electrosmog includes “dirty” electricity, ground currents, microwaves and radio waves. Microwaves are not only from leaky microwave ovens, but also from cell towers, cell phones and wireless equipment.

Electrosmog is all around us and can only be partially blocked. One of the best solutions is to take measures to decrease your exposure. With therapeutic PEMFs, one can purposely add beneficial balancing frequencies to the body to decrease the burden of the negative effects of electro smog.

PEMFs and Magnets: What’s the difference?

PEMFs are frequency-based, applied to either the whole body or parts of the body. PEMFs may only be needed for short periods of time, while the effects last for many hours, setting in motion cellular and whole-body changes to restore and maintain balance in metabolism and health. The body does not acclimate, or “get used to,” the healthy energy signals of therapeutic PEMFs, even if used for a long time, compared to magnets.

Stationary (or “static”), non-varying, magnetic fields from magnets have fixed strengths. They are used in mattresses, bracelets, knee wraps and the like. Most have very shallow penetration into the body, resulting in a very limited ability to affect deeper tissues, and they rarely treat all the cells of the body simultaneously. Only skilled practitioners may guide you to get the best results from these approaches.

Experience with PEMFs

There are quite a number of PEMF systems available now in the US, for daily in-home use, that can help meet your unique needs. Some are FDA-approved and many more are available over-the counter or from various experienced practitioners. Some whole-body systems have been available in the US for over a decade and have been used in Europe by tens of thousands of people for a wide variety of problems without significant negative effects for over 20 years. One PEMF system has been studied through NIH-supported research at the University of Virginia for Rheumatoid Arthritis. These whole body systems have been used worldwide, not only by health-conscious individuals for health improvement and maintenance, but also by world-class and Olympic athletes for increased endurance, enhanced performance, and faster recovery.

Astro Analysing Eye Problems and Disorders

Eyes are the best gift of our life and play a major role in our life. Our eyes works as the most sophisticated electronic automatic camera. The pupils of the eyes open for the adjustment of focus; accordingly the muscles of eyes contract or expend to allow the entry of proper light inside. Colours are identified and a proper picture develops in our mind. All the process is automatic. Now due to different reasons if the functioning of eyes is disturbed there can be temporary or permanent damage to the eyes.

If proper care is not taken for the eyes diseases which appear mild or the wrong treatment is given, there is possibility of losing the eyesight.

Astrological factors influencing eyesight:

2nd/12th house: the 2nd and 12th signs of the zodiac rule over the right and left eye respectively.

Sun/Moon: Sun governs the right eye and the Moon governs the left eye.

Venus/Jupiter: Venus governs the second sign Taurus and Jupiter governs the 12th sign Pisces. Therefore if Jupiter and Venus are placed in 6th/8th/12th house along with the lord of ascendant may cause eye problems.

Mercury: governs the sight and optic nerves.

Astro analysing different eye diseases:

Optic atrophy:

  • Damage of optic nerves by agencies outside the eyes like syphilitic infection, increased intracranial pressure arising from the brain tumour, drug or chemical allergies, degeneration of optic nerves may cause optic atrophy.
  • Affliction of Sun and Moon on 2nd and 12th house and Mercury in heavy affliction in the chart may cause optic atrophy to the native.

Glaucoma:

  • This is a serious eye disease caused by increase or sudden pressure exerted by eye fluid against other parts. If this pressure is not relieved it will make the eye ball hard, damage retina and optic nerves and may also cause blindness.
  • Sun and Moon afflicted in 2nd/12th house by Saturn/Rahu the native may suffer from glaucoma.

Myopia:

  • The eyes can focus on near objects but vision at distance is blurred. It is also known as nearsightedness.
  • Afflicted Sun and Moon can give problem of Myopia.

Colour blindness:

  • The patient becomes unable to distinguish between red and green colour.
  • The Venus is in heavy affliction especially by Saturn and sign Taurus is also in heavy affliction may cause colour blindness to the native.

Cataract:

  • Due to clouding or crystalline of lenses of eye or its capsule the victim cannot see normal objects properly due to lost opacity of eye lenses.
  • Venus / Jupiter placed in 6th/8th/12th house in association of lord of ascendant and Sun and Moon are afflicted in 2nd/12th house.
  • Afflicted Mercury posited in 2nd/12th house may produce Cataract problem.

Squinted eyes/Boss eyed:

  • In this condition the eyes are not properly aligned to each other.
  • Native born in day time and Moon and Mars combined in 8th house indicated crossed eyes.
  • Moon/ Mars posited in ascendant and aspected by Jupiter/Venus indicates squinted eyes.
  • Mars placed in 7th house aspecting Moon being posited in Leo sign and lord of 9th placed in Aries/Leo/Scorpio/Capricorn squinted eyes is indicated.
  • Mars placed in 7th, aspecting Sun being placed in Cancer sign and Lord of 9th placed in Aries/Leo/Scorpio/Capricorn indicate a boss eyed native.
  • Moon and Sun placed in 2nd/12th house indicate definite crossed eyes disorder.
  • Sun and Moon combined with retro planets in 6th/12th house indicates squinted eye.

Problem in only one eye:

  • Any malefic placed in 6th house gives weakness to left eye and any malefic placed in 8th house gives right eye trouble.
  • Moon placed in 2nd and Sun placed in 12th house respectively gives problems of left and right eyes.
  • Mars placed in 12th house gives left eye problem whether as Saturn posited in 12th house gives right eye problem.
  • Sun placed in ascendant/7th house and aspected by Saturn the native will gradually lose the vision of right eye.
  • Sun combined with Rahu/Mars in ascendant/7th house aspected by Saturn indicate disease of left eye.
  • Moon Posited in Leo ascendant and aspected by Saturn and Mars the native will have diseased left eye.
  • Sun and Saturn combined in 9th house and without having any benefice influences indicate the native will have left crossed eye and Sun placed in Leo ascendant and aspected by Saturn and Mars indicates squinted right eye.
  • Sun/Moon placed 12 and 6th house indicated left eye problem.
  • Sun/Moon placed in 2nd and 8th house indicates squinted right eye.

Blindness:

  • Due to infection, accident or degenerative eye diseases the native may lose total vision temporary or permanently.
  • Sun and Moon afflicted by Saturn in 2nd/12th house and affliction to signs Taurus and Pisces may give blindness.
  • 2nd house is aspected by Saturn and Moon and 12th house have conjunction of Saturn and aspects of Mars the native will be completely blind.
  • Sun and Moon and 2nd and 12th houses become subject to the aspects /association of Mars and Saturn the native may lose his eye sight.

Simple Steps to Improve Your Health

There are various ways of attaining good health and this article discusses easy techniques and small lifestyle changes that you can make in order to achieve a better, healthier lifestyle. Here are a few simple steps that might help you achieve better health –

1) Nutrition

Sustenance and Health is an online worldwide companion investigated diary that spotlights on the connection amongst nourishment and wellbeing. In the event that you need to keep your body clean, avoid sugar-loaded artificially treated nourishment that is so normally sold nowadays. Stick to home-made clean nourishment things that exclusive join crisp fixings without additives. These practices enable you to accomplish a superior build, as well as give a special reward of mental fulfillment. Consuming a sensible, balanced diet can help us to achieve optimal health throughout life.

Drink plenty of clean and safe water.Water is important for life and is necessary every day. A person needs about eight cups of fluid per day. When it is very hot, while working, sweating or suffering from diarrhea, vomiting or fever, a person needs to drink even more to replace the water that has been lost. If drinking-water is collected from a protected well or borehole it is important to store it in a clean container. If the water is from an unprotected well or river the water should be boiled for at least ten minutes and stored in a clean container (see advice on food hygiene)

2) Exercise

Exercise can help prevent excess weight gain or help maintain weight loss. When you engage in physical activity, you burn calories. The more intense the activity, the more calories you burn. Regular trips to the gym are great but don’t worry if you can’t find a large chunk of time to exercise every day.

Our bodies are designed to move — they actually want exercise. Regular exercise is necessary for physical fitness and good health. It reduces the risk of heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes and other diseases.

3) Sleep

Sound sleep is as important as nutrition and exercise. Try to have at least 7-8 hours of sleep on a daily basis. Sleep is involved in healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. Adequate sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle and can benefit your heart, weight, mind, and more.

Research suggests that people who get less sleep i.e. six or fewer hours a night have higher blood levels of inflammatory proteins than those who get enough sleep sleep

4) Yoga

Yoga can provide relief from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Yoga is being practiced as an alternative healthcare practice. The number of Yoga practitioners continues to rise tremendously. Of the many benefits ascribed to yoga practice, blood pressure control is among the most studied. Now-a-days, millions and millions of people across the globe have benefitted by the practice of Yoga which has been preserved and promoted by the great eminent Yoga Masters from ancient time to this date.

Yoga’s attention to breathing techniques and meditation can also improve your health. Regular yoga practice may promote better posture and help you do activities requiring a greater range of motion, from dancing to reaching up to a high shelf. A lot of yoga poses, especially the warrior pose, plank pose and boat pose, also help tone the muscles of the trunk – the hips, abdominals and lower back. These muscles contribute to balance and improve back function.

Summarizing these points, I would say that choosing a healthy lifestyle is in our hands and its a good change that we should bring in our lives and embrace it fully. Make these points your habit and I am sure you would not be disappointed.

Glaucoma Identity Kit – What is It?

Glaucoma is a dreaded eye problem where the eyes can not drain properly and the patient becomes blind because of too much fluid pressure. There are many different types of glaucoma, but one of the most common is called congenital glaucoma. That means this kind of glaucoma is passed on through your genes. Would not it be great if some sort of glaucoma identity kit was devised to see if you or your children carried this particular gene before you started to go blind?

What Is Congenital Glaucoma?

Congenital glaucoma is a problem for young children, who often are educated to the doctor or ophthalmologist when it's too late. Although some children can be diagnosed as newborns, as many as 15% of babies with congenital glaucoma go undiagnosed, according to some studies done in America. When the symptoms develop, they often go blind in both eyes 75% of the time. For some unknown reason, boys are more affected than girls.

Discovery In 1997

The first step in developing such a glaucoma identity kit is discovering the specific gene that causes congenital glaucoma. Considering how many genes and gene combinations a person carries, it's easier to find a needle in a haystack. But in March of 1997, University of Connecticut Health Center's research scientist, Mansoor Sarfarazi, Ph. D, found the needle.

The studies were mostly funded by a company called InSite Vision, which was hoping to use the discovery of the gene to develop profitable glaucoma diagnostic tools. Unfortunately, these things take time. InSite, in cooperation with an Italian company, did plan to test a product called OcuGene in Italy in 2002. Its technical name was ISV-900. It Disappeared into Obscurity after 2003. In 2007, InSite Viiosn announced in court papers that "Our marketing and sales efforts related to OcuGene glaucoma genetic test have been significantly curtailed."

No glaucoma identity kit of any kind is currently listed in the company's products, not even for clinical development. It is unknown how long InSite will own the exclusive rights to the University of Connecticut Health Center's research to allow other companies the chance of developing a diagnostic kit.

Seeing Into The Future

The mention of ISV-900 probably makes anyone at InSite Vision shudder. There was a terrible court battle with those same Italian companies with a lot of the details being hushed. As of 2008, no medical supply company or pharmaceutical giant has been able to develop such a diagnostic tool so far. Despite the fact that there are a lot of children who get glaucoma, apparently not enough of them go blind or they are not from families rich enough to mount any kind of legal protest.

Perhaps in the future, pharmaceutical companies will concentrate on what's best for people's health rather than what's best for their shareholders.

Ophiasis – What is Ophiasis?

If there are patches on the head or the body which are completely devoid of hair, it could be Ophiasis, a type of Alopecia Areata. Ophiasis is Greek for "snake" as it is recognized by a serpent like design on the temporal or occipital area of the scalp.

The bald patch will be very smooth and may increase in size. It leaves no scar and is inflammatory. It could affect anyone, young and old, man or woman. It is not a dangerous disease but it affects the psychology of the patient as it may lead to total loss of hair and may make the patient a recluse in society.

There are three steps in the growth of follicles of hair. Anagen implications activity in the hair follicle. Hair grows in this stage. Catagen implies growth retardation. Telogen is the time for the follicle to rest. Hair falls at this stage. The cycle is complete and anagen starts again.

In the anagen stage follicles may get inflamed. This is Ophiasis. They enter the telogen phase instead of catagen. If this keeps happening weak strands of hair are produced from the follicles.

Some researchers believe that the follicles quickly proceed from the first stage to the last one. Some believe that the follicles get captured in the last stage. In the early stages of the disease the cycle gets disrupted. This leads to a large number of hair follicles in each stage.

Clumps of hair of the last stage fall from all parts of the body. If the roots are visible they are telogen follicles. At the borders of the bald patch are broken hair which look like exclamation marks.

This is how Ophiasis occurs.

Eye Doctors Have Genetic Tests For Glaucoma – What Is Available For Your Eye Exam and Diagnosis

Glaucoma is a complex disease caused by multiple factors. In plain English, that means it is not one disease and not caused by one factor only. Recent knowledge has made us acutely aware that eye pressure is not the determining factor in the diagnosis of glaucoma. When the pressure inside the eye was above 21 in the past glaucoma was thought to be present. Today we know that some individuals will never develop glaucoma even though their eye pressure readings may stay in the 30's while other patients can not tolerate normal pressures without sustaining sight loss. Glaucoma is more of a vascular disease of the optic nerve of the eye. When the auto-regulation of the blood supply starts to fail, vision begins degrating. High eye pressures do cause compression of the blood vessels supplying the nerve, but healthy blood vessels with good auto-regulation mechanisms can sustain very high pressures. Eye pressure is not static and can vary throughout the day. When we read it once when we are at the optometrists office it is only a thin slice of what your pressure range could be over a 24 hour period.

The Human Genome Project mapped the human gene structure and was an intensive undertaking completed in 2003 taking 13 years and sequencing over 3 billion codes of base pair information. This has opened the doors to tremendous future strides in treating all diseases. There is a chromosome with a gene that codes for the production of a protein that makes up part of the structure of the mesh work in the anterior chamber of the eye .. This mesh work is responsible for keeping the fluid balance in check by allowing continual drainage. When something goes awry with the drain the pressure goes up increasing your risk for developing glaucoma. One company has developed a test for defects in the gene that makes this protein. Unfortunately, this gene is only responsible for about 4% of the cases of glaucoma. It can be useful when there is a suspected family history since patients with this genetic marker tend to have rapidly developing glaucoma and should be treated more aggressively. It also tends to be more commonly associated with glaucoma under the age of 40. One other glaucoma gene has also had mutations that appear to be associated with open angle glaucoma, the form that is responsible for 95% of the cases of glaucoma. One other gene has reportedly been associated with an increased incidence of glaucoma in patients with normal pressures. An uncommon form of glaucoma know as exfoliation has also seen the development of a genetic marker test, but due to the rarity of this condition it is not widely used.

All together, probably less than 10% of glaucoma has a direct genetic cause, and due to the expense of genetic testing it is rarely utilized. The complexity of testing is compounded by the fact that numerous defects at each gene can occur, and sometimes it may take two or more genes with flaws to create glaucoma. Even the most accepted genetic factor may cause glaucoma from defects in areas other than the mesh work. It is very early in the age of genomics. Perhaps the greatest benefits will not be in diagnosing glaucoma but in tailoring treatment and actually curing some forms of glaucoma in the future.

General health issues are the most important risk factors, and some you can control. Smoking and cardiovascular diseases are high risk factors for developing glaucoma. Make sure you stay fit and have well controlled blood pressure. Keep preventative appointment and regular eye exams to monitor the eye pressure. Age is a risk factor but consider it a good one. A longer life is usually better all things considered! Most vision insurance plans like Vision Service Plan, Medicare, and many others cover preventative annual eye examinations.

Health Care Reform and Coordination of Benefits

The current discussion of expanding health care options through federal legislation deals primarily with big issues – like how to pay for the new coverage and how proposed reforms would change the current medical care system. One of the smaller questions not showing up on many radar screens is how health care reform would impact coordination of benefits issues.

The current method of paying for health care in the US is contracted of many different medical coverage "silos". Any given individual- depending on the nature of the disease or injury and how it is arose- may be entitled to have medical treatment paid for by any one of many different plans that provide for payment of medical expenses: group health, workers' compensation, automobile no-fault, homeowner's, liability and a government-sponsored plan like Medicare or Medicaid.

When Uncle Larry was hurt in a motor vehicle collision while making a delivery for his employer, the hospital that treated his broken arm could have conceivably billed Larry or Larry's employers 'workers' compensation insurance carrier or Larry's group health insurer or Larry's auto no-fault insurance carrier or Medicare. Traditionally, those potential payers have operated within separate silos, with little or no sharing of information between them about who had coverage for Larry and about the circumstances of Larry's arm getting broken. Any one of those health coverage plans could have ended up being billed for and paying the hospital charges.

Under the existing Medicare Secondary Payer statute Medicare is not obliged to pay Larry's hospital bill and would only be liable for payment if none of the other coverage was in force. Any workers' compensation, liability, no fault and group health plan or policy in effect for Larry must pay before Medicare is obligatory to pay.

Currently, systems are in place for Medicare to discover what other health care coverages are in effect for its beneficies, to find out what payments other health coverage have made on behalf of its beneficies and to recover reimbursements for Medicare payments made when a primary coverage is in effect. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the federal agency tasked with administering the Medicare program, has a rather robust system in place for enforcing the secondary non-paying rules and minimizing the number of cases in which Medicare pays for treatment that another payer is obliged to pay .

Medicaid, on the other hand, is administrated by state agencies. Due in part to very low-income-eligibility standards, the typical Medicaid beneficiary would not have other, private medical payment coverage in force. Accordingly, there is no single, effective process in place to coordinate benefits between Medicaid and any other medical treatment payers available to a Medicaid beneficiary.

The health care reform proposals now being debated in Congress would-very very terms- expand health care coverage in four ways:

o increasing the number of people who qualify for Medicare (eg decreasing eligibility age from 65 to 55)
o increasing the number of people who would qualify for Medicaid (eg increasing maximum income levels to 150% of the federal poverty level)
o accelerating qualification requirements for existing private insurance policies, and
o creating a new publicly-administered health insurance plan.

Clearly, enactment of legislation expanding the number of people covered by health insurance will increase the incidence of overlapping or duplicative coverage. That will increase opportunities for payment of medical expenses by the wrong payer. That will increase the need for effective information sharing among the non-paying silos and enforcement of payment priorities.

One aspect of the health care reform movement that will be particularly helpful in the coordination of benefits is an expansion of electronic data exchange between the health care payers. If the hospital that treated Uncle Larry's broken arm was able to put Larry's social security number and a few other key data elements into a web-based database accessed and fed by all potential health expenditure payers, it could be a pretty simple process to determine who the bill should be sent to, avoid payment by the wrong payer and find opportunities for reimbursements when payment is made by the wrong party.

Federal law (42 USC 1320d-2) already requires CMS to develop a system for electronic data exchange of health information for the purpose of improving the operation and reducing the costs of the health care system. The principle health care reform bill pending in Congress – HR 3200- covers over 1,000 pages of text. One sentence of that bill deals with coordination of benefits:

"Not later than 1 year after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Health and Human Services shall promulgate a final rule to establish a standard for health claims attachment transaction described in section 1173 (a) (2) (B) of the Social Security Act (42 USC 1320d-2 (a) (2) (B)) and coordination of benefits. "

Bingo.

Get everyone on the same (web) page, and make sure that includes Medicaid (since expanding eligibility for Medicaid will increase opportunities for duplicative coverage and need for coordination.)

Improve Vision Naturally – Can Near-Sightedness and Far-Sightedness Be Treated Naturally?

The two most often seen problems with people's vision are usually myopia and presbyopia. They are also known as near-sighted and far-sighted respectively. As the name implies, they both affect the vision adversely in judging how we see objects at certain distances. Did you know that both of these problems can be cured naturally – without glasses or contacts? The reason for this is that studies have shown that all eye problems are generally traced back to bad habits linked to early childhood development as well as excess eye strain.

Myopia, or near-sightedness, sets in because the eye has become elongated. The primary cause of this problem is only focusing on objects which are nearby for excess periods of time. More often than not, this is caused in school kids early on, as they are required to look at textbooks which cause the eyes to focus at close range.

Myopia manifests itself as a result of eye strain and mental stress. It has been shown that the stress which school children come under is tremendous. They are required to learn about subjects which can be very boring, and this causes the learning process to become more difficult. Because looking at boring material over prolonged periods of time causes the eyes to strain, studying in this way without a break can be very harmful to vision.

Near-sightedness can be attributed to stress and other psychological issues. Myopia can be a symptom of someone being nervous or anxious about things to come. A person may be afraid of their future in the subconscious, and this can also cause the eyes to harmfully strain. Likewise, those who are only comfortable in "their own world" or "comfort zone" may also suffer from myopia for the very same reasons.

Far-sightedness, or presbyopia, is when you can see things far away, but not close to you. People start to contract presbyopia when in their 40s. Presbyopia causes the lenses in your eyes to lose its elasticity and flexibility. The truth of the matter is, we can still train the muscles around the eyes to become more elastic, even if the lens has lost some elasticity. While many people erroneously attribute presbyopia to getting older, they usually just get glasses and forget about it. Unfortunately, glasses do more harm than good, in this regard, as they do nothing for the physical properties of the eyes.

Myopia and presbyopia can be completely avoided by simply allowing your eyes to move every day. If you are studying or reading things close up for a long period each day, take some time to focus on things in the distance. To prevent presbyopia, do the opposite.

Nearsightedness (Myopia) Is Not a Life Sentence – Get Your Vision Back in Natural Ways

It is commonly believed that nearsightedness (myopia) is caused by over working our eyes at near distance objects for a lengthy period, such as reading, writing, stitching, working on the computer. By over doing our eyes in the above manner, the eye muscles are forced to contract for a long period of time. In order to focus up close on these tasks, the eye muscles must contract for a length of time. Over time, the eyeball is slightly longer and flatter than the lens requires. As a result, light entering a myopic eye converges just before the retina (where the image is formed) and the resulting vision is blurred and out of focus.

Research shows that nearsightedness may not be determined by genetic factors alone, but habit, life style and the environment may also play a significant role.

Optometrists traditionally treat nearsightedness, with glasses or contact lenses, which do not cure the eye impairment, on the contrary it has been known that they may worsen the problem.

In the hands of a laser eye surgeon, patients are usually offered to undergo eye surgery which has its own risk and is very expensive.

The good news is there are better and effective options to treat nearsightedness and give you the chance to put away your glasses for good and have a carefree life. Your eyes are too beautiful to be hidden behind thick glasses. With this method you do not need to spend thousands of dollars to undergo surgery treatment.

Modern treatment of nearsightedness now include a method of reducing near-point stress. The most important thing is not to wear distance glasses for reading, because these usually increase near-point stress and make the myopia worse. This method is widely known helping thousand pair of eyes to regain normal condition.

Low Myopia

If you're developing myopia at early stage, it may be possible to return to normal or near-normal vision quite easily. We suggest you do not wear corrective lenses or wear them as little as possible, provided its safe to do so. Exercise daily as recommended to increase your natural focusing power.

Medium to High Myopia

Practice eye exercises to trigger the brain's ability to control eye alignment, eye tracking and eye teaming, eye abilities, eye movements and visual processing. Master them well to acquire new vision skill. After that you will need you will need other visual program to strengthen you vision permanently.

Of course, the amount of improvement varies from person to person but the important thing is that your vision will get better gradually instead of steadily getting worse. And when you feel the new power in your eyes and see your world becoming clearer, you'll never want to go back to your glasses.

Here are basic exercises to help to improve nearsightedness:

Palming:

Cover you eyes (no pressure on the eyes), place your fingertips at hairline and put your fingers overlapped. Your elbows should rest on table or pillows placed on your lap. Close your eyes, relax and let your mind go as far as possible and keep breathing.

Swinging:

Rotate your body from left to right and back, turn on your waist. Eyes, torso and head move together. Do not look at anything as you swing; concentrate your movement only.

Sunning:

Go outside and enjoy the sun in the morning or late afternoon. Close your eyes and relax. Let the sun shine onto your lids then sway back and fort. Do not look directly at the sun.

Allow the warmth of the sun to penetrate deeply into your eyes and forehead. Keep breathing.

By following the above steps, you are in the process of improving your nearsightedness. Practice them everyday, and complete the process with other useful therapy and, you will gradually need to use weaker set of lenses.

Otitis Media And Ear Pain Relief

Inflammation of the inner ear (OM) is extremely common in children as well as affecting quite a few adults. Recurrent, protracted ear inflammation causes severe pain, restlessness and muffled hearing, which can hamper development and prejudice learning. Ear infection is one of the main reasons for visiting the doctor or the emergency room.
Blockage of the Eustachian tube (OT) which links the middle ear cavity to the oral cavity can be a main cause of inflammation or a secondary factor – caused by inflammation and swelling of the mucus membrane of the ear and blocking the Eustachian canal.

Opening the Eustachian tube is an important and even essential step towards healing the inflammation. Blockage of the canal prevails drainage of the fluids secreted by the mucosal membrane of the middle ear and predictions equalization of the atmospheric pressure on either side of the eardrum. This increases the pressure inside the ear cavity and pushes the eardrum outwards, leading to pain, muffled hearing, and occasionally problems with balance. Moreover, increased pressure in the middle ear cavity prevents the absorption of medication into the region via local osmosis (eardrops) or systemically (via the blood).

Prevailing medical treatment – until now, treatment has involved the use of steroids and pseudo-epinephrine to reduce edema, with antibiotic cover for primary bacterial infection or secondary complication. If medical treatment failures and inflammation recurs constantly extended antibiotic treatment, the usual practice is to perforate the tympanic membrane and ensure that it remains open by inserting tiny drainage tubes. This allows the contents of the middle ear cavity to drain out, equalizing pressure, improving hearing, stopping pain, and permitting medication to enter locally and heal.

The newly invented device is called the EarDoc (Figure 1). EarDoc is a small, low cost electrical device for treating and opening the Eustachian tube. It works by producing vibrations at a sub-sonic frequency. The instrument head is specifically designed so that when positioned behind and resting on the base of the ear, the bulge on the head of the device lies against the mastoid bone and the pointed front section rests against the base of the ear.

The front of the head of the device causes the cartilage of the ear base to vibrate along the outer ear canal to the tympanic membrane. The vibrating membrane produces tiny pressure waves affecting the air and pressurized fluids of the middle ear cavity. The previously constant pressure inside the middle ear cavity is converted into cyclical waves, which acting as shock waves exert pressure on the walls of the narrowed or blocked Eustachian tube. In addition, the vibrations from the head of the device via the mastoid bone to the wall of the middle ear cavity produce vibrations in the swollen mucus membrane of the middle ear canal and the Eustachian tube, reducing edema. This combined action tremendously improves the possibility of opening the canal and enabling trapped air and fluids from the middle ear cavity to drain into the mouth.

Adjusting the frequency helps to improve the efficiency of the device in several ways: the optimum operating frequency is different for each individual depending on the size of the middle ear cavity and the Eustachian tube, which naturally vary. Frequency adjustment also enhances the oscillation of the mucosal membrane. It is recommended that the patient should gradually adjust the frequency to cover the entire frequency range. EarDoc should be used for 3-5 minutes approximately six times a day when the canal is narrowed or blocked. This improves the likelihood of opening the canal and ensuring it positions open, and provides instant pain relief, improved absorption of medication, and healing of the inflammatory.

Air travel and diving – Blockage of the Eustachian tube is a commonplace consequence in air travel and underwater diving. Fluctuating differences in atmospheric air pressure on both sides of the tympanic membrane induced reduced pressure in the middle ear cavity, swelling of the mucus membrane cells in the inner ear, and increased fluid secretion. This produces a vicious circle in which the greater the difference in pressure, the narrower the Eustachian tube becomes and the less effect it can drain fluid and equalize air pressure. Impaired functioning of the tube causes insufficiency in the canal and blockage. Inflammation of the pharynx and upper respiratory tracts leading to early boiling of the mucosal membrane exacerbate the phenomenon and risk of blockage. Use of EarDoc during flights and following diving sessions can reduce pain and produce healing as described above.

Sinus inflammation – like the middle ear cavity, when the sinus drain is blocked due to swelling or inflammation of the sinus cavity mucus membrane, EarDoc can help by resting it against the bone adjacent to the sinus in order to open the closed opening and allow drainage and healing.

Swine Flu Prevention

With all the news about swine flu, few people are talking about prevention, other than taking the controversial flu shot.

Is it real prevention? Have dozens of people really become sick or died from the shot? Is is more of a danger than a precaution? There are more questions than answers.

Each of us needs to make our own decision about taking the shot, but whether we do or do not, we should be taking some basic precautions to prevent this, or any other flu.

The first step, of course, is to keep our hands clean. Wash often with anti-bacterial soap, and use hand wipes or gel when soap and water are not available. This is especially important when visiting public places, where we may touch items that have been touched by sick people.

Think of the grocery store as a prime example. Those shopping cart handles feel hundreds of hands up them every day. Some stores offer wipes at the entry door, so use them. But do be careful using them on your own hands if you have any chemical allergies. I gave myself a pounding head one day by being too diligent cleaning my hands with one of them.

Next, also of course, is to try to keep your hands away from your mouth and nose. This is probably the most difficult – most of us are constantly touching our own faces.

Possibly even more important than these preclusions is what we should do when we get home after being out in public.

According to one doctor's column I read, the "Swine flu bug" lives in the throat and nasal passes for a couple of days before it begins to do its dirty work. So we need to take steps to kill it before it gets a chance to make us sick.

That doctor recommended gargling nightly with salt water. Then, either using a netti pot to clean our noses, or doing a swab with a q-tip soaked in salt water.

One last precaution works by washing the bugs into your digestive tract, where they can do no harm. It's also the easiest to do: drink hot liquids. Choose coffee, tea, hot chocolate, or even hot water with a bit of lemon and honey.

Such simple solutions to carry such strong prevention.

What about kids?

Children can learn to gargle – but it may take a few tries before they "get it." I recommend teaching them with plain water.
