Even the mention of penis pain is enough to get some guys feeling tense. All men know how very sensitive the penis is; that sensitivity is responsible for the glorious feelings a male experiences during orgasm, but it’s also responsible for the intense pain that the manhood sometimes suffers. Proper penis care helps to strengthen the organ, but penis pain still occurs. Getting hit in the crotch is one common source, but it’s passing pain. Something like CPPS (chronic pelvic pain syndrome) is longer lasting.

What is CPPS?

CPPS is a condition which can strike both men and women; when it occurs in men, it may go by other names, such as chronic nonbacterial prostatitis. CPPS is defined as a pain or discomfort in the pelvic area that lasts for three months or longer and does not have a bacterial agent as the cause.

There is still a great deal being learned about CPPS, and at this point, most of the time a diagnosis is arrived at by ruling out other possible causes – which means that it can take some time before a proper diagnosis is made. When a man has CPPS, he experiences penis pain (sometimes significant) and has urinary symptoms similar to a urinary tract infection – but without the bacteria that cause such an infection. Sexual dysfunction, frequently related to the penis pain, is also typical.

CPPS is found in between 2% and 16% of men around the world and is thought to be the most common urologic disease in men who are under 50 years of age. (Women also have a female version of CPPS.)

When a man has CPPS, there is a general underlying discomfort in the pelvic region, sometimes specifically in the penis, sometimes elsewhere in the region (the balls, the perineum, etc.). Penis pain is often pronounced when urinating or ejaculating.

Prevention and treatment

Although doctors do not yet know the cause of CPPS, there are theories. Some suspect it is an immune disorder, others suspect increased pressure in the prostate, and some suggest trauma may be a factor.

However, in some men there do seem to be some identifiable triggers which are associated with CPPS. These include possible reactions to food or drink, especially spicy foods, alcohol, coffee and tea. Lack of sufficient exercise can also help bring about CPPS in some men. Therefore, prevention strategies often involve dietary changes to limit potential triggers and programs to ensure greater physical activity.

There are numerous treatment options which may be employed in treating CPPS and its symptoms. In addition to changing the diet and increasing exercise, doctors may recommend a range of medications. Anti-inflammatory drugs as well as pain medications are often used, as are muscle relaxants. Alpha blockers are often prescribed, as these can help relax the muscles around the prostate. Prostate massagers are also sometimes utilized for the same purpose. When pain is intense while sitting, use of a pillow or inflatable ring may be beneficial. Some men report improvement from use of acupuncture.

Men with CPPS may experience psychological issues because of the pain, and these can often worsen the condition. Counseling is often recommended to help a man learn how to better deal the disorder when it is chronic and long lasting.

Dr. Frederick Wolfe, the director of the National Databank for Rheumatic Diseases and the lead author of the 1990 paper that first defined the diagnostic guidelines for fibromyalgia, says he has become cynical and discouraged about the diagnosis. He now considers the condition a physical response to stress, depression, and economic and social anxiety. "

Dr. Wolfe goes on to say, "Some of us in those days thought that we had actually identified a disease, which this is clearly not."

"… other doctors – including (Dr. Wolfe) the one who wrote the 1990 paper that defined fibromyalgia but who has since changed his mind – say that the disease does not exist and that Lyrica and the other drugs will be taken by millions of people who do not need them. "

Just when I was optimistic that the traditional medical community was finally getting the message that fibromyalgia is a very real and very serious illness, this kind of short-sighted, arrogant, and simple-minded myth raises its ugly head once again. This bit of news, by a prominent rheumatologist, is not a huge surprise. When was the last time you visited your rheumatologist (after waiting months to be seen) and felt like they understood your fibromyalgia? And if they did believe you had fibromyalgia, were they helpful?

Probably not, since their answer is to recommend more and more drugs, year end and year out. The side effects of these drugs begin to add up and pretty soon you realize your fibromyalgia symptoms are not much better, and worse, you've got additional symptoms from all those meds.

I've repeatedly been asked to give my opinion on the over-hyped new drug for fibromyalgia, Lyrica. I've kept quiet for two reasons. One, I wanted to give Lyrica the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately Lyrica has proven to be ineffective for the majority of my patients, as well as the fibromyalgia sufferers I'm in contact with around the world. Secondly, I thought at least Pfizer's multi-million dollar drug campaign would help the public understand the pain fibromyalgia patients experience day in and day out. Surely the TV and print ads would help others realize that yes there is such a thing as fibromyalgia, here are the symptoms, and this is why aunt Jane feels so miserable each day.

According to the New York Times, worldwide sales of Lyrica reached $ 1.8 billion in 2007, up 50 percent from 2006. Analysts predict sales will rise an additional 30 percent this year, helped by consumer advertising. During the first nine months of 2007, Pfizer spent $ 46 million on Lyrica ads.

Sadly, The New York Times and other print media have elected to take a different slant. Instead of helping dispel the myth that those with fibromyalgia are crazy, lazy, or depressed, they've elected to focus on the minimum of doctors who think fibromyalgia is not real.

As I lecture and interact with doctors throughout North America, I routinely encounter doctors who do not believe fibromyalgia exists, but the number has steadily declined. But now this article comes out and what will the public think?

More on Lyrica

Lyrica is the first prescription medication approved to treat fibromyalgia. Pfizer's Lyrica, commonly known as pregabalin, binds to receptors in the brain and spinal cord and seems to reduce activity in the central nervous system. But, no one knows exactly how Lyrica works.

Some say that Lyrica does not work well enough to have warranted its FDA approval. In 2004, the FDA as a remedy for diabetic nerve pain, reviewed Lyrica. The reviewers recommended against approving the drug, citing its side effects. But the FDA ignored the advice of Lyrica reviewers, and approved it anyway. Then Pfizer asked the FDA to expand the approved uses of Lyrica to include the treatment of fibromyalgia, and the agency did so in June.

According to in clinical trials, patients taking Lyrica reported that their pain fell on average about 2 points on a 10-point scale, compared with 1 point for patients taking a placebo. Not a big deal to say the least.

About 30 percent of patients said their pain fell by at least half, compared with 15 percent taking placebos.

The study involved 75 participants took Lyrica and 75 took a sugar pill or placebo. So 38 of those taking Lyrica had at least a 50% in pain. But 23 participants taking a placebo had at least a 50% reduction in pain. Lyrica was helpful for 15 more participants than a sugar pill. But, at what cost?

Lyrica causes gain gain and edema, or swelling, as well as dizziness and sleepiness. According to the New York Times, in 12-week trials, 9 percent of patients saw their weight rise more than 7 percent, and the weight gain appeared to continue over-time. Many individuals who have been prescribed Lyrica, and then quit taking it without their doctors consent have discovered that they suffer from many uncomfortable symptoms. Many individuals who start Lyrica to soothe the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia do not realize that this medication can become addictive. If you wish to stop Lyrica treatment, you must discuss it with a medical professional. The doctor will then set lower and lower dosages until you are able to stop treatment with no dangerous side-effects. Obviously I'm not a big fan of Lyrica. I believe there are safer and more effective ways to reverse the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

Boost Your Immune System This Flu Season

With the flu season upon us, all of us should take steps to get our immune systems ready to fend off germs. Boosting your immune system is a very good idea if you want to stay cold- and flu-free. Let's start with the very basics: good sleep, balanced diet, physical activity, and avoidance of tobacco smoke.

1. Good sleep

Why do we sleep? During sleep, our bodies rest and rejuvenate. Getting adequate amounts of sleep every night may even boost the immune system. According to a study reported in the Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine (2003), people who were vaccinated against Hepatitis A and got a good night's sleep afterwards had almost 2 times the level of antibodies than the group of vaccinated people who did not sleep after the vaccination . The moral here is that sleep is important to keep your immune system in shape, so get at least 8 hours of sleep every night. School-age children and adolescents need at least 10 hours of sleep, so do not let your children convince you otherwise. Remember, there is always "tomorrow" if it comes to playing computer games or watching movies!

2. Balanced diet

Eating three meals a day, and nutritious snacks in between, will help your immune system work efficiently. By eating healthy, you provide your immune system as well as the rest of your body with all the necessary nutrients for optimal functioning. When your body is well nourished, it can fight off infections better. Therefore, fill your plate with fruits, vegetables, and lean meats or fish. Also, do not forget about 3 servings of dairy products to keep your teeth and bones strong! Good hydration is also very important, so have at least 5 glasses of water a day in addition to the other fluids that you usually drink.

3. Physical activity

Moderate physical activity improves the efficiency with which our immune systems fight viral and bacterial infections. Despite the efficiency of the immune system increments while exercising, when the exercising session is over, the efficiency reduces to baseline within a few hours. However, if you exercise regularly you may prolong this beneficial boost in the function of your immune system. The American Heart Association and the American College of Sports Medicine issued new guidelines for physical activity for adults. Detailed guidelines are available at americanheaart.org/fitness. The recommendation stresses the importance of moderate physical activity for 30 minutes, 5 days a week, or vital physical activity three times per week. According to the guidelines, short bouts of activity can be combined to meet the 30-minute-a-day goal, so get off the couch and engage in an immune booster activity!

4. Avoidance of tobacco smoke

Did you know that exposure to cigarette smoke not only gives us wrinkles but also decrees levels of vitamin C in our bodies? This possibly lowers the efficiency of the immune system leaving us prone to catching colds and other infections. In addition, inhaled cigarette smoke damages cilia, tiny hairs that line up the respiratory system. Their function is to continue beat in one direction and move secrets from places where they are not suppose to stay for too long. When they get destroyed and mucus (produced during viral illnesses such as colds or the flu) is not clear efficiently anymore, we are more prone to bacterial sinus, ear, and lung infections. There is no cure for a viral illness. However, let's talk about 3 potential immune system boosters that may help you in ward off the viruses: zinc, vitamin C, and Echinacea.

1. Zinc

So far, there are conflicting results as to whether zinc is effective in treatment of colds in adults. There is no sufficient evidence for its effectiveness in children and adolescents. Therefore it is not recommended for these age groups. The adult studies that determined zinc to be effective, claim that it may shorten the duration of a cold by 3-4 days if started within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms. Zinc has an unpleasant taste and may cause an upset stomach. Long-term use is not recommended because high levels may interfere with absorption of copper so leading to deficiency. Adults wishing to use zinc to treat their colds should follow package directions for dosage and limit zinc use to a week or shorter.

2. Vitamin C

Vitamin C does not prevent colds. However, if it is taken regularly, vitamin C may shorten the duration of cold symptoms. People with medical conditions, such as kidney disease or blood disorders, need to talk to their health care providers before starting the supplement. Mega doses of vitamin C are not recommended, because vitamin C's effectiveness in cold treatment is very slight. Therefore, just make sure that your diet contains the recommended daily amount (90 mg for men, and 75 mg for women).

3. Echinacea

For years, scientific studies would deliver contradictory results as to whether Echinacea helps banish colds. Today, the herb is in! A large meta-analysis suggested that the herb decreases the duration of a cold and lowers chances of catching one! Echinacea is believed to stimulate the immune system, so it's advantageous to start taking it at the first sign of cold symptoms and continue until all the symptom are gone. Buy products that have a mark "USP verified" and follow package directions while taking the herb.

These side effects are unacceptable to most of the population. At this point there is no regulation or oversight of the quality and amount of active compounds in medical marijuana. Unlike prescription pharmaceuticals, the amount required for a proper dose is impossible to accurately state. There are also problems with decreased blood pressure, increased heart rate, and dizziness when standing up after sitting. The decreased blood pressure theoretically could reduce blood flow to the optic nerve and increase the risk of glaucoma damage. There are other possible health risks and benefits that may occur. Oddly, lung cancer does not to be a risk at this time, and marijuana may even offer a protective effect. However, there is some damage to the lung tissues that is thought to occur with long term usage.

Capsules of the single most active substance in marijuana are available by prescription through regular drugstores. These also lower eye pressure but significantly less than inhaled marijuana. The capsules also have a slower onset and need to be consumed every 4-6 hours. The side effects are often described as much more unpleasant than inhalation. The prescription capsules lack the 60+ other similar compounds found in the plants plus several hundred other types of biological compounds. It is unknown if this makes the prescription capsules a better or worse choice. Again, the required frequency of dosing and side effects make this a poor option for the treatment of glaucoma.

Current glaucoma prescription eye drops usually require dosing 1 to 2 times per day, and have a low risk of side effects that rarely interfere with daily functioning. They have a very precise, consistent level of active components. While some problems can occur, these are rare and fairly well known from clinical trials. Marijuana has some active compounds that do lower eye pressure and deserve further support for future investigation. We may even find it is a useful adjunct for treatment in conjunction with standard therapies in the future. However, at this time there is no indication that medical marijuana has any place as a primary treatment for glaucoma, when we have such a large choice of prescription drugs that have undergone vigorous studies. These studies have found them to be safe and effective, with significant research behind them. As a bonus, you do not have to be constantly looking over your shoulder due to the uncertain legal status when you stick to clinically approved glaucoma medications.

How to Deal With a Gunshot or Stab Wound

Although the chances of getting shot or stabbed are slim, if you ever find yourself in a situation where you can help, or where you need to treat yourself, knowing some basic tips could make all the difference.

First of all make sure that you do not put yourself in any danger, if there is a gunman or a knife wielding maniac on the loose, do not put yourself in any further danger. By becoming a casualty yourself, you will be making the situation much worse. If you are the victim of the attack, getting away from your attacker will save you from any further harm.

Next you need to call for the emergency services, you will need immediate help and protection, which the police and ambulance services can provide. They will also provide a quick means to getting you or the patient to the hospital.

Depending where the wound is will determine how much time you will have before you or the patient becomes very poorly. If you had a wound to the chest, then depending if any of the major organs or blood vessels were damaged you may only have seconds left. If it was to the arms or legs then you may have more time. It can be a matter of a few cm’s between major arteries and organs, meaning you may not know how long you have before time starts running out. Wherever the injury is, you will need to put great pressure on the site to stop any bleeding.

Unless you are injured to the brain, heart, or lungs, blood loss will be the first thing that is going to kill you or the patient. The amount of damage from a gunshot wound or stabbing will cause significant bleeding to that site, and if any arteries are involved, then blood will be pumping out. If the injury is to a limb, try and place a tourniquet above the wound site. This could be a belt or some type of fabric. The idea of a tourniquet is to apply so much pressure that it stops the blood being pumped to that area via the major arteries. The amount of pressure will hurt, but you need to try and put as much as you can until the bleeding has stopped. If you achieve this then place great pressure on the site of the wound to help further stop the bleeding.

If you cannot get a tourniquet, then apply great pressure to the wound site.

If the injury is to the body, then you need to apply great pressure to the site. Again the idea is to stop the bleeding you can see, and the bleeding internally that you can’t. This may hurt, but the more you can stem the bleeding, the more time you are buying from bleeding out.

Keep this pressure on until the emergency services arrive to take over care.

Myopia – How Far Can You Really See?

How far can you really see? Simple question, is not it? But I am not talking about seeing with your eyes. I think even blind people can see things in their mind, but I am not going to dwell too much on that, but instead I hope to take you beyond your natural inclinations to think deeply on a much more interesting topic.

In his highly acclaimed book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey presents strong lessons in personal change.

In the 2nd habit, the author suggests to begin with the end in mind. What it all means is to begin with the image of the end of your life as the frame of reference by which everything else is measured.

Covey illustrates the concept with a visualization exercise asking you to imagine that at the end of your life, you are able to listen to what was being said at your funeral. He further invites you to determine what you would like to hear people say about you as a father, a life partner, a college … kind of life that will make it happen.

The book further went on to suggest developing a personal mission statement, philosophy or credo based on your values ​​and principles that will help you focus on what you want to be (character), and do (contributions and achievements).

All this is based on the theory that all things are created twice and that there is a mental first creation and there is a physical second creation and that management is being efficient by doing things right, while leadership is being effective by doing the right things.

Some people have adopted the principles of this book and have gone on to become highly successful and effective people. There are also countless other people who could not fully implement the principles because they could not bear to change their characters first. Perhaps, their over-inflated egos or impatience has preempted them from achieving what they want. After trying out some of the ideas, they come to realize that the book is not a quick-fix book. They need to change their own way of looking at things, and start to mature from a dependent stage, to an independent stage and then to an interdependent stage before they can really see some substantive results.

Health Care Reform and Coordination of Benefits

The current discussion of expanding health care options through federal legislation deals primarily with big issues – like how to pay for the new coverage and how proposed reforms would change the current medical care system. One of the smaller questions not showing up on many radar screens is how health care reform would impact coordination of benefits issues.

The current method of paying for health care in the US is contracted of many different medical coverage "silos". Any given individual- depending on the nature of the disease or injury and how it is arose- may be entitled to have medical treatment paid for by any one of many different plans that provide for payment of medical expenses: group health, workers' compensation, automobile no-fault, homeowner's, liability and a government-sponsored plan like Medicare or Medicaid.

When Uncle Larry was hurt in a motor vehicle collision while making a delivery for his employer, the hospital that treated his broken arm could have conceivably billed Larry or Larry's employers 'workers' compensation insurance carrier or Larry's group health insurer or Larry's auto no-fault insurance carrier or Medicare. Traditionally, those potential payers have operated within separate silos, with little or no sharing of information between them about who had coverage for Larry and about the circumstances of Larry's arm getting broken. Any one of those health coverage plans could have ended up being billed for and paying the hospital charges.

Under the existing Medicare Secondary Payer statute Medicare is not obliged to pay Larry's hospital bill and would only be liable for payment if none of the other coverage was in force. Any workers' compensation, liability, no fault and group health plan or policy in effect for Larry must pay before Medicare is obligatory to pay.

Currently, systems are in place for Medicare to discover what other health care coverages are in effect for its beneficies, to find out what payments other health coverage have made on behalf of its beneficies and to recover reimbursements for Medicare payments made when a primary coverage is in effect. Accordingly, there is no single, effective process in place to coordinate benefits between Medicaid and any other medical treatment payers available to a Medicaid beneficiary.

The health care reform proposals now being debated in Congress would-very very terms- expand health care coverage in four ways:

o increasing the number of people who qualify for Medicare (eg decreasing eligibility age from 65 to 55)
o increasing the number of people who would qualify for Medicaid (eg increasing maximum income levels to 150% of the federal poverty level)
o accelerating qualification requirements for existing private insurance policies, and
o creating a new publicly-administered health insurance plan.

Clearly, enactment of legislation expanding the number of people covered by health insurance will increase the incidence of overlapping or duplicative coverage. That will increase opportunities for payment of medical expenses by the wrong payer. That will increase the need for effective information sharing among the non-paying silos and enforcement of payment priorities.

One aspect of the health care reform movement that will be particularly helpful in the coordination of benefits is an expansion of electronic data exchange between the health care payers. If the hospital that treated Uncle Larry's broken arm was able to put Larry's social security number and a few other key data elements into a web-based database accessed and fed by all potential health expenditure payers, it could be a pretty simple process to determine who the bill should be sent to, avoid payment by the wrong payer and find opportunities for reimbursements when payment is made by the wrong party.

Causes of Absence Epilepsy:

So far, no cause has been found for absence seizures. However it may run in families. Seizures are caused due to abnormal activity of the brain cells. Any abnormality in the production, discharge or provision of nerve impulses in the brain causes seizures. However the cause for abnormal production of electrical signals in the brain of a child suffering from absence epilepsy is unknown.
