Saw Palmetto for Baldness

This herb has the ability to inhibit 5-a-reductase, the same enzyme that Proscar and Propecia affect. In several double blind studies, saw palmetto has been shown to improve symptoms of benign prostate enlargement. One 3 year trail comparing saw palmetto with Proscar showed significantly greater improvement with the herb than with the prescription drug.

If saw palmetto can prevent the conversion of testosterone to DHT by blocking enzymatic activity, then there is a reason to believe, that this herb could be at least as good as Propecia in growing hair.

Aromatherapy

Some people think that aromatherapy is sniffing aromatic herbs. The Scottish dermatologist who did the research with this treatment says that aromatherapy "involves the use of essential oils and essences derived from plants, flowers, and wood resins, which are generally massaged into the skin."

They point out that "Cedarwood, lavendarm thyme, and rosemary oils have hair growth-promoting properlytied These oils have been anecdotally used to treat alopecia [baldness] for more than 100 years.

People in the study had been diagnosed with alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition in which hair loss occurs in patches. It may affect as many as 1% of people in Western countries and is not limited to male or female, old or young. In many instances, hair growth recurs at any time, but treatment is difficult and the condition can be psychologically damaging.

For this study, 84 people were randomly assigned to either of 2 groups. One group of people received a placebo mixture of 3 ml of jojoba oil and 20 ml of grapeseed oil and were told to massage it into the scalp each night for 2 minutes. The head was then wrapped in a warm towel to enhance absorption of the oils, with the addition of essential oils of thyme, lavender, rosemary, and cedarwood. The study lasted for 7 months.

Follow-up was done with photographs and computer analysis of tracings of bald patches at 3 months and again at 7 months. Of those using the essential oil mixture, 44% had measurable improvement, while only 15% of those using the placebo oil improved. This difference was statistically significant. They even provided before-and-after photos that were nothing short of amazing .

None of the people in this study experienced negative effects from the oils. This gives the aromatherapy treatment a better safety record than the pharmaceuticals often used to treat this condition. That does not mean such a concoction is safe for everyone. Some people may be sensitive to one or another of these essential oils and experience a rash or dermatitis.

Although this study focused primarily on alopecia areata, one of the individuals in the study also had male pattern baldness, known medically as androgenic alopecia. This is the most common form of hair loss. The researchers noted "some moderate regrowth of hair loss." Whether other men with this problem would benefit remains to be determined.

Kwashiorkor in an Affluent Society

Kwashiokor is a form of protein-energy malnutrition that we generally associate with children from war-torn countries of Africa. The financial and social affluence generally protects our population, especially the children, from protein deprivation. The low incidence of Kwashiokor delays its diagnosis in the special groups that are at risk of developing it. Chase HP, in a review of kwashiorkor, suggests that children on severe protein restriction due to nutritional ignorance, perceived milk intolerance, or food faddism can develop Kwashiokar. Chronic malabsorptive conditions such as cystic fibrosis are also a high-risk group. Hospitalized patients with decreased nutritional intake or severe nutritional loss are also prone to protein-energy malnutrition.

The symptoms include retardation in stature and tissue development, poor development of muscle and lack of tone, edema, potbelly, swollen legs and face, anorexia and diarrhea. The person stops interacting with the surroundings. The pathologic and biochemical changes include fatty infiltration of the liver, reduced serum levels of triglycerides, phospholipids, and cholesterol, reduced amylase, lyase and trypsin. Serum proteins and albumin fractions are markedly reduced. Hemoglobin levels are especially reduced. This could be a serious complication leading to blindness and death. (Chetali Agrawal, 2000).

Dietary management for kwashiorkor concentrates mainly on providing a diet that is high in protein. Five grams of proteins/kg of body weight/day should be given for the existing weight. The calories derived from protein should be 10% of the total calculated calories per day if the main source is animal protein. If the main or the only source is from cereals and pulses, then the percentage of calories derived from protein can be 13 to 14% of the total calories because of the net protein utilization of cereals and pulses is around 60% whereas in milk or eggs, it is around 90%. Though vegetable proteins are as good as milk proteins in reversing the acute manifestation of kwashiorkor, they are inferior in their ability to promote regeneration of serum albumin. This can be overcome by giving 3 parts of vegetable protein to one part of animal protein like skim milk (Srilakshmi)

Dietary supplements containing proteins like whey and casein can be of benefit in malnourished subjects. Casein is a milk protein and has the ability to form a gel or clot in the stomach. The ability to form this clot makes it very efficient in nutrient supply. The clot is able to provide a sustained slow release of amino acids into the blood stream, sometimes lasting for several hours (Boirie et al., 1997)

Micellar casein is an extremely slow digesting and rich protein source that continues to feed the muscle (which is essential for kwashiorkor) long after whey protein has passed through the digestive system. In fact, studies with this under-rated form of isolated casein protein (Proc Natl. Acad Sci USA 1997) have demonstrated it to sustain steady amino acid elevation for an incredible seven hours. It was shown to offer a strong anti-catabolic effect not noticed with fast digesting whey protein, and actually fostered a much more positive overall net protein balance in comparison. Glutamine is the predominant amino acid in casein, which plays an important role in brain metabolism. Proline, aspartic, leucine, lysine and valine are also present. Casein is a good source of essential amino acids.

Whey proteins are made up of a-lacalbumin and ß-lactoglobulin (which defend against infection), albumin, the immunoglobulins, enzymes and protease, peptones. ß-lactoglobulin accounts for about 50% of total whey protein. Whey proteins provide the highest value of BCAA (Branched Chain amino acid). This is highly valued for muscle building–an essential requirement in kwashiorkor–and recovery. Whey proteins are the highest quality of proteins as they contain the best combination of amino acids as compared to proteins in dairy products, soy, vegetable, and even meat. Whey proteins also support the immune functions by increasing glutathione levels, thereby exhibiting antioxidants properties. Whey proteins contain many similar ingredients found in a mother’s milk. Other benefits of whey proteins include the fact that they are easily absorbed, which help in increasing lean muscle mass and helps fat loss.

It is necessary to maintain electrolyte balance in patients with Protein Energy Malnutrition. Vitamin and mineral supplementation must be given according to the physician’s advice. If vitamin A deficiency is present, oral administration of a single dose of 50,000 International Units (I.U.s) of fat-soluble vitamin A should be given immediately, followed by 5000 units daily. The deficiency symptoms will be cured in about two weeks. Anemia is most frequently encountered in people suffering from protein energy malnutrition. For the treatment of anemia, ferrous ammonium citrate (0.8g) should be given daily in the form of syrup in three divided doses for a period of one month. 100 mcg of Folic acid should be given daily (Srilakshmi).

Treatment strategy involves provision of adequate protein, provision of casein and whey protein supplementation, provision of vitamin and mineral supplementation, resolving life threatening conditions, restoring nutritional status without disruption of homeostasis ensuring nutritional rehabilitation. Criteria for improvement involves disappearance of mental apathy and edema, rise in serum albumin level and an increase in weight gain.

Acoustic Neuroma Hearing Loss – Strategies For Coping With One Sided Deafness

*Use visual cues and knowledge of your environment to figure out where a voice is coming from.

*Use seating arrangements to your advantage. With experimenting, you will eventually figure out the best places to sit in a group setting.

*Turn to face a person sitting on your deaf side, even though it feels awkward at first.

*Communicate your needs to others. Be easy on them if they forget. Just tell them again.

*Be easy on yourself. It is not your fault this happened. You owe it to yourself to speak up so others can help to include you.

*Have a sense of humor. The best laid plans are bound to go wrong, and it would behoove you to learn to laugh about it.

*Relax! In most social settings, most people won’t hear most of what is said. You can always catch up with people one on one, later.

*Have a daily relaxation routine, such as breathing exercises, yoga, or walking. It will go a long way toward helping you cope and put things in perspective.

I was out in Chesapeake the other day working on a gorgeous thoroughbred horse, a grandson of Secretariat, who had the unmistakable look of Nasrullah in his eye. He was well over 17 hands and put together nicely. He nearly walked over 3’6″ fences I was told. But, he was being plagued by a condition known as Head Shaking, which some have said is Trigeminal Neuralgia.  

Headshaking syndrome in horses is a perplexing challenge. It is found all over the planet, I am told it is mostly seasonal, and afflicts mainly geldings who are over 10. Well, that would fit the bill perfectly for Charlie. It is characterized predominantly by vertical head tossing or flicking and muzzle irritation observed as rubbing on objects and sneezing but the cause is actually unknown.

If Charlie is suffering from Trigeminal neuralgia, then he may have to deal with sudden bursts of facial pain. The current opinion is now in favor of a neurovascular conflict: an artery that has an offending contact with the trigeminal nerve root.  Trigeminal neuralgia is diagnosed as having pain with distribution along one or more of the trigeminal nerves, the pain is sudden, intense, precipitated by triggers, has periods of remission, no neurological deficits and all other causes have been excluded. I worked with humans who have been afflicted by this condition and I can tell you there is a great deal of suffering.

There is an assumption now in the medical field that a horse that is suffering from head-shaking syndrome is having the same syndrome cluster-tic syndrome that my patients have. Obstructive sleep apnea in children that our normal is almost always caused by swollen tonsils (hypertrophic). These youngsters will usually show the regular sleeping patterns of sleep apnea. But then, employees in the LEAN area were transferred to new areas, management changed their focus to the latest new technology, and new employees were not cross trained. LEAN tools to document abnormalities stacked up and were not reviewed and no one acted on them. The result was a return to old habits and business as usual, which affected customer relations and profits. When management tried to reinstate LEAN, there was resistance and many felt it was a failure because it did not last, so why try again?

Actually, LEAN had worked but it was not sustained because there was not a parallel management system developed. Another contributing factor was the lack of discipline in completing, reviewing, and acting upon LEAN tools. LEAN is not a one-time fix but a journey to continuous improvement.

The tools in LEAN make sense and are easy to use. The challenge is to actually employ the discipline to complete the charts, interpret data, and make the improvements. Let's take a small scale example of what can happen when the tools are not used and the processes in not followed. In a manufacturing plant, an employee on the line had a call for the production of a number of units of a product not produced every day. The employee was considered very knowledgeable about the product and had a standard of work document. His team leader also had a standard of work document for the inspection of the process. The employee took a quick look at the steps in the standard of work and began producing the product. Unfortunately, he skipped an important step that ensured quality and eliminated customer complaints. This would have been noticed on the first unit or at least in the first hour of production if the team leader had inspected as required in her standard of work. But, she relied on the skill of the employee and turned her attention to another area of ​​responsibility. The result was the shipment of a below-standard product and customer complaints.

Had the employee and the manager followed the standard of work and both used their LEAN tools, no sub-standard product would have been shipped and one or the other may have found another opportunity for improvement as they would have a fresh look at the process.

The objective is to develop a LEAN culture that includes everyone; that means executives, managers, team leaders, and employees. LEAN includes new work habits and like the development of personal habits, you must have a license to employ the new habit.

It is the development of a culture. It is something that evolves as the employees and executives change. It is the result of experience. It results from the implementation of the two LEAN systems. It also results from a new way of approaching things. It includes respect for the brain power, capabilities, and experience of the employees. They are closest to the work and can provide valuable insights and innovative ideas.

Many people think that technology alone will ensure quality and improve production, but that is not true. Alex Warren, a former Executive Vice President of Toyota, tells how the technology alerts to defects but the employee has the power to stop the production line and fix the problem. He says it puts power into the hands of the employees and they know they count and feel both the responsibility and the power.

In many companies, executives sit in their office and either read reports or attend briefing sessions. However, going to see for yourself provides a different level of understanding. In one of the Success CDs that came with my copy of the magazine, Darren Hardy told of how he was brought in to do a turnaround for a company. One of his first recommendations was for the owner to take a walk around the building at least one or two times a week for 30 minutes and find an employee doing something right and compliment that person. He also recommended asking employees what were their challenges and what would help overcome the challenge. Darren said to ask questions so you understand what you observe and what the employee is telling you. The owner was impressed with the success of this change. Employees began to feel valued and make recommendations. Production and quality improved. Of course there were other changes as well, but this is an example of a change in habit and how cultures are developed.

Degenerative Disc Disease – Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Can Help

Millions of Americans suffer from severe back and neck pain as a result Degenerative Disc Disease. DDD as it is often referred to in the literature is not really a "disease" in the common sense of the word, but rather a term used to describe a process or condition that develops gradually and worsens over time. Use of this term indicates that the cartilage-like disks between the spinal vertebral joints are the primary cause of the symptoms, and that the degenerative changes are rather advanced. To some degree intervertebral discs lose their flexibility, elasticity, and shock absorbing characteristics as we age as do the other tissues in the body. Abnormal or excessive mechanical stresses or injuries of the past coupled with hereditary, developmental, and metabolic effects can rapidly accelerate this process.

As the implied disc dries out and loses height (a process known as desiccation) it causes the vertebra to become closer together narrowing the channels through which the nerve roots pass. A dry, hard disc can absorb less shock and is that more easily torn resulting in a greater likelihood of herniation or bulge further compressing or pinching the nerves. As the stress on the joint compounds and osteoarthritis begins to result, bone spurs form and ligaments thicken (hypertrophy) gradually narrowing the nerve channels even further. These factors in various combinations and degrees of severity mitigate the space in the nerve channels, a condition known as spinal stenosis (narrowing), and conspire to compress (pinch) the nerves.

Symptoms of Degenerative Disc Disease

The most common symptom of degenerative disc disease of the lumbar spine is low back pain (lumbalgia). If the cervical spine is affected, the most common symptom is neck pain (cervicalgia). When degenerative disc disease causes compression of the cervical nerve roots there may be shoulder pain, arm pain, and pain in the hand / fingers (neuritis, neuralgia, radiculitis), and may be associated with numbness and tingling (paresthesia). When degenerative disc disease causes compression of the lumbar nerve roots there may be butt pain, hip pain, leg pain, and pain in the foot / toes. This often is accompanied by muscle weakness in either the arm or leg.

Spinal Decompression Treatment

In the past, a patient suffering from disc problems was usually given pain medications or injections, directed to refrain from physical activities, referred for physical therapy, and when they were not progressing they were sent for spinal surgery or simply told to learn to live it. Since 2001 when the FDA finally approved non-surgical spinal decompression therapy, there is new hope for those who suffer from degenerative disc disease. Spinal Decompression Therapy is a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment performed on a special, computer controlled table similar in some ways to an ordinary traction table. A single disc level is isolated and by utilizing specific traction and relaxation cycles throughout the treatment, along with proper positioning, negative pressure can actually be created within the disc. It works by gently separating the offending disc 5 to 7 millimeters creating negative pressure (or a vacuum) inside the disc to pull water, oxygen, and nutrients into the disc, thereby re-hydrating a degenerated disc and bringing in the nutrients needed to heal the torn fibers and halt the degenerative process. As the disc is re-hydrated the shock absorbing properties are restored and a normal life can be resumed.

Nerve Pain: Try Using Visualizations And You May Get Some Relief

"Neuropathic" means nerve damage and returns to nerve pain. So far there's very little that science can do about it. But it's possible that your subconscious may be able to help you find some relief.

The two forms of neuropathic pain – peripheral and central – both occurs when a nerve is damaged from injury or some other source. If the damage is in the periphery of your body, you feel pain from touch immediately. If it's in the central nervous system, you only feel it after a delay of 20-30 seconds – and potentially the pain is more intense.

Peripheral Nerve Pain

Some major types of peripheral nerve pain include the following:

o Posttherpetic Neuralgia occurs after an outbreak of shingles has healed. Shingles damages the nerves, which then send unclear and overblown pain messages to the brain. The result can be aching, burning, or jabbing pain in the area of ​​the former shinglees infection.

o Trigeminal Neuralgia affects the trigeminal nerve, which sends impulses from the face and head to the brain. The pain can be severe and is usually felt on one side of the jaw as being knife-like or electric in nature.

Central Nerve Pain

Central nerve pain is unique among the types of pain in that it is the only one that is caused by the central nervous system itself. All other types occur in the periphery and are transmitted to the central nervous system. This makes central pain unusually bizarre and severe – sometimes the worst pain known to humanity.

Some major types of central pain include the following:

o Dysesthetic Burning is a blunt, metallic burning feeling that has a strangely cold quality to it. It goes on at a constant level over large areas of the body. Any light touch, particularly from clothing, triggers flares of unbearable pain.

o Hyperpathia is a sharp, overwhelming reaction to pain that people who do not have central nerve pain would find only some painful. It tends to occur on parts of the body where the dysstatic burning is the least. Ordinary bumps and abrasions can become excruciating.

o Allodynia is pain that occurs from stimuli that are not normally painful. It appears near but not on the area stimulated. The slightest of moves can trigger the pain.

o Other forms of central pain include permanent cramping in given muscles, shooting pains, pins and needles, and agonizing bladder and bowel pain.

Neuropathic Pain and the Subconscious

Through visualization statements it may be possible to focus your subconscious on the brain chemistry involved in central nerve pain.

Visualization statements represent the specific language that your subconscious desires you to read back to it to help ease your pain. They're simple and are targeted directly at the main factors that could bring you relief.

You can obtain these statements by learning how to communicate directly with your own subconscious mind. The process is straightforward and can be done at home by working with a facilitator over the telephone. You need no special skills and no previous experience in working with the subconscious.

We have not yet worked with neuropathic pain. However, the signals for this pain are transmitted by the same neurotransmitters that we normally deal with when focusing the subconscious on other kinds of pain:

o We have experience using visualization statements to address glutamate, substance P, norepinephrine, and acetylcholine, the four major pain transmitters.

o We've used visualizations to address endorphins / enkephalins, GABA, serotonin, and dopamine, the four major pain inhibitors.

Reducing the Pain Signal

The above eight neurotransmitters play a major role in increasing and inhibiting nerve pain. Putting these factors back in balance is that a preventive measure, one that helps to keep the pain signal from being generated in the first place.

But an important part of your pain relief strategy also needs also to be to attempt to reduce the pain signal once it has been generated. This can be approached by focusing the subconscious on numerous chemical weak points (we call them leverage points) where it may be possible to use visualizations to reduce the pain signal.

If you can learn to engage your subconscious, you most likely will be able to identify which leverage points apply to you. You can then use visualization statements to give your subconscious the daily reinforcement it needs to potentially take the edge off your pain at those points.

Study Suggests Myopia Prevalence Decreases With Outdoor Activity

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a vision defect that happens when one’s eyes are unable to focus the light from distant objects correctly onto the retina. Someone with myopia is able to clearly see objects that are close, but objects that are far away are blurry. 

Myopia generally first arises in elementary-aged children, though it can also develop in adults. Research indicates that it is a hereditary trait – children whose parents are nearsighted are more likely to be as well. Although the inclination to acquire nearsightedness is likely inherited, the development of the condition can be affected by how one uses their eyes. For example, a person who spends a lot of time reading or who does extensive work on the computer or other close visual work may be at higher risk of developing myopia.

Myopia has become increasingly more common over the past 50 years, and it is estimated to now affect around 1.6 billion people worldwide, with numbers expected to climb to 2.5 billion by 2020, according to the Institute of Eye Research. In the United States, nearsightedness (myopia) affects nearly 30 percent of the population.

The increase in myopia cases is thought by a team of Australian researchers to be a result of more children being raised in environments where they don’t see objects far away and their eyes aren’t adapted to focus on distant objects as they develop. Global myopia cases are most prevalent in societies where children watch television and play computer games instead of playing outside, they say. In cities like Hong Kong and Tokyo, 30 to 50 percent of 12-year-old children are myopic; in the United States, it is around 20 percent for this age group.

A report published in the January issue of Optometry and Vision Science found that children with myopia spent an average of 8.3 hours per week outside and children without myopia spent an average of 12.6 hours outside. The study also found that children with myopia watched several additional hours per week of television, on average.

The researchers, from The New England College of Optometry, said that sunlight could expand the range that objects are clearly visible. The effect appeared to be similar with both active and passive outdoor activity.

Myopia symptoms and correction

Common symptoms of myopia in children include squinting to see distant objects, difficulty reading the chalkboard at school, sitting close to the television, and disinterest in playing outside.

Myopia doubles the risk of glaucoma and retinal detachment, both of which can lead to vision loss later in life.

A basic vision test will determine if an individual is nearsighted. Myopia is relatively easy to correct with contact lenses or eyeglasses. The lens bends the images that enter the eye and focuses the image properly. Depending on the severity of one’s myopia, wearers may only need to wear their lenses for certain activities. Adults can also consider laser surgery, which can only be done after the eyeball is fully developed.

Another option for treating myopia is called orthokeratology, or corneal refractive therapy. With this treatment, myopic patients wear specially designed rigid contact lenses that gradually reshape the cornea.

Vaccines – A Parent's Guide For Children

Vaccines contribute to significant reduction of childhood diseases such as Diptheria, Tetanus, Whooping Cough, Polio, Haemophilus Influenzae type-b and Hepatitis B to name a few. Parents should take the time to learn the facts about the benefits and risks of vaccination.

Also, learn about the potential consequences of not vaccinating against certain diseases. As a service provider, plain language should be used in communicating information about vaccines and their use to an individual. Printed information should also be available to compliment any verbal explanations.

Parents should know that the risk of having a reaction to a vaccine is much smaller than the risk of serious illness that comes with infectious diseases. Some parents are surprised to learn that children can die of measles, chicken pox, whooping cough and other vaccine-preventable diseases. The bacteria or virus that causes vaccine-preventable diseases and death still exists and can be passed on to people who are not protected by vaccines.

In Australia and the United States of America, vaccine coverage rate is high as a result of successful vaccination programs. Infant deaths caused by childhood diseases have almost disappeared.

Vaccination not only protects individuals, but also others in the community, by increasing the general level of immunity and minimizing the spread of infection. Occupational Health and Safety have put in place strict guidelines for the development of vaccines. The vaccines are developed with the highest safety standards. Every Service Provider should have an anaphylaxis response kit ready at all times. Vaccine storage is strictly monitored in purpose-built refrigerators with a 24hour temperature monitoring gauge. Vaccines being transported from main storage facility to external clinics, use the cold chain transport system.

Diphtheria – Can infect the throat, causing a thick covering that can lead to problems with breathing, paralysis, or heart failure.

Tetanus (Lockjaw) – Caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani. The bacteria are spread from the environment to open wounds where they can enter the blood stream. Toxins can cause muscle spasms, lockjaw, difficulty speaking / breathing, stiffness and pain in the shoulders, back and neck.

Whooping Cough – Is caused by a highly infectious bacterial spread by droplet and causing upper respiratory and lung infections. Symptoms include coughing and 'whooping'. Complications of the disease is lack of oxygen to the brain leading to brain damage and possible death.

Polio -Is caused by a virus, and symptoms of the disease include headache, nausea and vomiting, tiredness, neck and back stiffness and severe muscle pain. Polio can cause meningitis and paralysis.

Haemophilus Influenzae type b (Hib) – Commonly found in the upper respiratory tract (lungs and windpipe), Hib can cause infection in children under 2 years, because they do not have the necessary antibodies to fight this infection. Hib infection can cause meningitis (an infection of the covering of the brain and spinal cord), epiglottitis (severe swelling of the throat), arthritis and pneumonia.

Hepatitis B – Hepatitis B can cause liver infections and damage, liver cancer and death. Symptoms include, weakness, tiredness, poor appetite, nausea and vomiting, abdominal discomfort, pain, muscle and joint pain, skin rashes, jaundice.

Pneumococcal Infections – The bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae can cause meningitis (inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord), pneumonia, septiacaemia (blood infection), and middle ear and sinus infections. Symptoms can include vomiting, sensitivity to light, neck stiffness, poor appetite, confusion, irritability and drowsiness. May include fever, coughing and difficulty in breathing.

Varicella (Chickenpox) – chickenpox is a highly contagious infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is a member of the herpes group of viruses. Symptoms can include a rash that turns into open itchy, lesions which will crust over. Complications can include skin infection of the lesions, scarring, pneumonia, difficulty walking and balancing, meningitis (inflammation of the brain and spinal cord), encephalitis (brain infection).

Measles – A highly infectious disease, measles is caused by the Morbillivirus. It is spread from person to person through droplets in the air. Measles is a respiratory infection that causes skin rash and flu-like symptoms. Also fever, cough, runny nose, and, inflammation of the eye are common symptoms. Complications of measles include ear, brain and lung infections, which can lead to brain damage and death.

Mumps – Caused by a virus, mumps is a salivary gland infection. the mumps virus is passed through air droplets and contact with the saliva of an infected person. Common symptoms include fever, headache and swollen glands, especially salivary glands. It can effect other glands such as the testicles. ovaries, pancreas, liver and brain. It can also cause sterility in some men, and lead to deafness in some people.

Rubella (German Measles) – Caused by a virus. this virus is spread from person to person through droplets in the air. It is an infection of the skin and lymph nodes. Symptoms can include rash, lymphadenopathy (swollen lymph glands), and joint pain which sometimes leads to arthritis. Rubella infection during pregnancy can lead to birth defects.

Meningococcal Infections – Caused by a number of different strains of the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis, it is a serious disease. It is a leading cause of bacgterial meningitis in children 2 – 18 years old in the United States. Meningitis is an infection of fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can also cause septicaemia, pneumonia, arthritis and conjunctivitis. Symptoms include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, confusion, irritability and drowsiness.

Rotavirus – Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe gastroenteritis in infants and young children, causing around half of all hospitalized causes of gastroenteritis in children less than 5 years of age. This viral infection of the stomach and intestines can cause sever diarrhoea and vomiting, and fever, which may lead to serious dehydration. The illness can begin abruptly and up to one third of affected children have a temperature of higher than 390 C in the first few days of the illness.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection – Human papilloma virus (HPV) is the name for a group of viruses that cause skin warts, genital warts and some cancers. Many different types of HPV can affect different parts of the body. HPV types that can cause genital warts or cervical cancer can be spread by direct skin-to-skin contact during all types of sexual activity with a person who has the virus. Symptoms of cervical cancer, including abnormal and precancerous vaginal and vulvar lesions, and genital warts in females ages 9 to 26. Gardasil is licensed for the prevention of cervical cancer.

All of the above are preventable childhood diseases. Common possible side effects from the vaccinations include soreness, redness, warmth and swelling at the injection site, fever, irritability, drowsiness, mild rash, loss of appetite, muscle aches, diarrhoea or vomiting.

You as the parent must tell your Health Care Provider beforehand if:

  • Your child has a known or weakened immune system,
  • is allergic to any of the ingredients of the vaccine, or
  • has ever had an allergic reaction after getting a dose of the vaccine.
  • Or if your child is moderately or severely ill or had a reaction to the antibotics neomycin, streptomycin, polymyxin B, gelatin, or eggs.

Vaccination recommended for routine childhood immunization is listed on the National Immunization Program (NIP) Schedule and funded for children under the Immunise Australia and USA Program.

Vaccination is an important step in getting children off to a healthy start and has contributed to a significant reduction in many childhood diseases. Children or adults can be re-vaccinated (with some, but not all vaccinations) if their immunity from the vaccines falls to a low level or if previous research has shown that a booster vaccination is required for long-term protection.

It's important to remember that vaccinations are many times safer than the diseases they prevent !!
