Shingles is an excruciatingly painful rash which occurs in people who have had chickenpox. The virus that causes chickenpox, scientifically known as the varicella-zoster virus, is the same one that causes shingles (a form of the herpes virus). What happens is that after you've had the pox, it lies dormant in your body. Then, sometimes decades later, it re-emerges – in the form of a painful and unfortunately painful and unpleasant rash.

Sadly, shingles is a lot nastier than chickenpox for the vast majority of people who come down with it. The worst bit, although it is fairly uncommon, is that you can be left with postherpetic neuralgia. The best way to explain it is that your skin "keeps" a memory of the rash, making it extremely painful to touch for years to come, even after the original infection is gone.

About one in five people who develop shingles get posttherpetic neuralgia, and the majority of them see the pain disappear in about one to three months. Knowing You Have Shingles

Preventing Shingles

The Zostavax vaccine will reduce the risk of getting shingles – and can reduce the duration of the infection if you catch it. Originally the vaccine was for people aged 60 and above only. In trials, it cut the number of infection in half. Treating a first attack with antiviral drugs can also reduce the severity of the infection.

Interestingly, adults with shingles can pass the virus onto others, usually a child, and he or she will get chickenpox. You can not pass actual shingles on to others, and people with chickenpox can not pass on shingles to others.

Shingles Complications

Like its little brother chickenpox, shingles is usually reliably harmless. But it can cause complications in some people. If you are HIV-positive, had had a recent organ transplant or have a suppressed immunity for other reasons, stay far away – ditto if you are pregnant or an adult who has never had chickenpox. In these people, shingles can cause sever complications.

There is often the rare complication of Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which occurs when shingles affects the ear. This can cause not only earache but also dizziness, facial paralysis and confusion. Extremely rarely shingles can also affect the brain and vision.

Remember that the virus can be reactivated, although typically this happens with older people who have an impaired immune condition. Having chemo or radiotherapy, excess alcohol consumption, taking steroids long-term and stress can all play a role in activating shingles. In fact, doctors have said that stress can play a major role in our getting the virus.

If you get shingles stay away from vulnerable people and take it easy. It will usually clear up on its own within a few weeks. You can take oatmeal baths and apply creams to treat the symptoms, much as you would do with chickenpox, and also take antiviral drugs – the earlier the better. They will shorten the duration of the infection and help make it more bearable.

Kwashiorkor in an Affluent Society

Kwashiokor is a form of protein-energy malnutrition that we generally associate with children from war-torn countries of Africa. The financial and social affluence generally protects our population, especially the children, from protein deprivation. The low incidence of Kwashiokor delays its diagnosis in the special groups that are at risk of developing it. Chase HP, in a review of kwashiorkor, suggests that children on severe protein restriction due to nutritional ignorance, perceived milk intolerance, or food faddism can develop Kwashiokar. Chronic malabsorptive conditions such as cystic fibrosis are also a high-risk group. Hospitalized patients with decreased nutritional intake or severe nutritional loss are also prone to protein-energy malnutrition.

The symptoms include retardation in stature and tissue development, poor development of muscle and lack of tone, edema, potbelly, swollen legs and face, anorexia and diarrhea. The person stops interacting with the surroundings. The pathologic and biochemical changes include fatty infiltration of the liver, reduced serum levels of triglycerides, phospholipids, and cholesterol, reduced amylase, lyase and trypsin. Serum proteins and albumin fractions are markedly reduced. Hemoglobin levels are especially reduced. This could be a serious complication leading to blindness and death. (Chetali Agrawal, 2000).

Dietary management for kwashiorkor concentrates mainly on providing a diet that is high in protein. Five grams of proteins/kg of body weight/day should be given for the existing weight. The calories derived from protein should be 10% of the total calculated calories per day if the main source is animal protein. If the main or the only source is from cereals and pulses, then the percentage of calories derived from protein can be 13 to 14% of the total calories because of the net protein utilization of cereals and pulses is around 60% whereas in milk or eggs, it is around 90%. Though vegetable proteins are as good as milk proteins in reversing the acute manifestation of kwashiorkor, they are inferior in their ability to promote regeneration of serum albumin. This can be overcome by giving 3 parts of vegetable protein to one part of animal protein like skim milk (Srilakshmi)

Dietary supplements containing proteins like whey and casein can be of benefit in malnourished subjects. Casein is a milk protein and has the ability to form a gel or clot in the stomach. The ability to form this clot makes it very efficient in nutrient supply. Micellar casein is an extremely slow digesting and rich protein source that continues to feed the muscle (which is essential for kwashiorkor) long after whey protein has passed through the digestive system. In fact, studies with this under-rated form of isolated casein protein (Proc Natl. Acad Sci USA 1997) have demonstrated it to sustain steady amino acid elevation for an incredible seven hours. Other benefits of whey proteins include the fact that they are easily absorbed, which help in increasing lean muscle mass and helps fat loss.

It is necessary to maintain electrolyte balance in patients with Protein Energy Malnutrition. Vitamin and mineral supplementation must be given according to the physician’s advice. If vitamin A deficiency is present, oral administration of a single dose of 50,000 International Units (I.U.s) of fat-soluble vitamin A should be given immediately, followed by 5000 units daily. The deficiency symptoms will be cured in about two weeks. Anemia is most frequently encountered in people suffering from protein energy malnutrition. Just What is Glaucoma and What Are the Symptoms?

You may already know that glaucoma is a disease of the eye that is very serious, but if you're unsure of just what the disease actually is and what the symptoms are to look for, you're not alone. As serious as this eye disease is, many people are simply unaware of the symptoms or even what it means to have glaucoma. Since it is something that can lead to loss of peripheral vision and even blindness, and since about 1 in 200 people under the age of fifty and 1 in 10 over the age of eighty actually get this disease, it's a good idea to learn more about it.

To better understand the disease of glaucoma, we do well to think about how the eye is structured in the first place. Behind the actual eyeball that we can see is a series of nerves that translate the light we take in through the eye into electrical impulses that then travel to the brain. The brain descrambles these impulses and reads them as sight. These nerves are as important to sight as the eyeball itself. Remember, all of our senses actually function in the brain; our eyes, ears, tongue, nose, and skin only act as receptors for the signals that travel along the nerve pathways to be translated into sight, sound, taste, smell, and touch. Just like a deaf person can have two perfectly good ears, damage to the nerve cells behind any of our sensory organs that can result in a loss of that particular sense. The word glaucoma is applied to a wide range of diseases that affect these nerve endings behind the eyeball itself.

Typically the disease is brought on by continued pressure on the nerve, but this pressure itself is no exact indication of who exactly will actually contract glaucoma and who will not. Some seem to be very sensitive to this nerve pressure while others seem to have a high tolerance level for it. So, this pressure itself is not an exact indication of contracting glaucoma or not.

The fluid in the eye is called aqueous humor and drains out of the eye through a network of drainage tissue between the iris and the cornea. In people with glaucoma this drainage tissue becomes blocked and fluid is replaced faster that it can be drained. This caused pressure to build up in the eye causing the blood vessels that nourish the eye with essential nutrients and oxygen to become constrained which cause the nerve fibers to die.

When left untreated, any form of glaucoma will lead to permanent damage of these optic nerves which will in turn lead to blindness. Typically this starts with a minor loss of a general vision but can lead to permanent cloudiness of vision. Unfortunately, glaucoma can develop slowly over several years so that the patient is unaware that he or she even has the disease until it can not be corrected.

It's important to get regular eye exams even if you do not have problems with your vision. Your optometrist can give your eyes a thorough exam and be aware of any symptoms of the sunset of glaucoma. Seizures: Have You Been Victim Of People's Ignorance

I have suffered from different types of seizures over the years. It does not matter what type of seizure disorder is affecting your life, people's reactions often hurt you more than they think. They often do not realize the importance of their reactions as they are primarily the reflection of their fears and ignorance on the subject.

As a toddler, I started suffering seizures that were later on diagnosed as Epilepsy. This was caused by a brain trauma that happened at birth. I had to take medications that were too strong for me resulting in not remembering years of my life. During this period which lasted for ten years as I was later told that I outgrew Epilepsy because of my body's changes during my teenage years I had to face people's reactions. You see, in these days, the terms Epilepsy and seizures cave life to uncontrollable fears in people. Some excluded me because they though I was mentally challenge, others thought that if they played with me, they would catch it. Others, like my own grandmother were convinced that I had to pray every night as she thought that I was possessed by an evil spirit as a punishment for my parents' sins. I was also picked on and laughed at by kids because of my lack of coordination and focus. It did not matter, who said nor did what, hurt and these painful memories still break my heart today.

As I later grew out of Epilepsy when I became a teenager, I started to suffer from seizures related to Hyperventilation. I was told that several people that had Epilepsy in the past were affected by this disorder as a result of extreme stress. Well, even my own mother thought that I had Hyperventilation episodes because I was looking for people's attention. Little did she know about the abuse that I enduring at the time.

Then during the first seven years of teaching, I experienced pseudo seizures which are also related to high level of stress and the fact that I was on heavy medications due to a wrong diagnosis of Epilepsy. Later on, I was told by a former principal that if I would look for a teaching position in her school, she would have to turn me down, not because of my teaching skills which she liked but for the fact that people with Epilepsy need to take more sick days than others according to her, which would be costly to the school division. Finally, since the birth of my youngest child, I have been experiencing some seizures related to my hypoglycemia. As a result, my husband has asked of me not to drive anymore as he is concerned for my safety, my children's and others should I have a seizure while driving. Others seem to think that I am not capable of handling stressful situations very well and tend to underestimate my potential and abilities which can make you feel inadequate at times.

The First Signs of Chicken Pox

The chicken pox is an infectious disease caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), which is related to the herpes family. It is extremely common among children, but can also occur in adults as well.

It usually takes about 10 to 21 days before the first signs of chicken pox to appear in someone after contact with another person that is suffering from this contagious virus (also known as the incubation period).

What are the first signs of chicken pox?

The first signs of chicken pox include symptoms such as tiredness, low-grade fever, and a loss of appetite. These are usually the earliest signs of the disease that occurs, which about 1-2 days later is next followed by a rash or red spots. However, the first signs of chicken pox do not always occur before the rash developments.

When the rash appears, it most often appears on the face, scalp and trunk first. Then it is usually followed by about 50-500 blisters that consume the entire body. Although many of these factors are determined by age (for instance, adults get it much worse than children), as well as how your immune system is functioning.

Herpes Zoster – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Herpes zoster, also known as ‘shingles’, is a syndrome characterized by a painful, unilateral vesicular rash, usually restricted to the skin area supplied by a particular nerve. Herpes zoster is usually caused by a reactivation of the chicken-pox virus, which lies dormant in the spinal dorsal root ganglia. Common symptoms include pain in a particular area, followed by a rash which gradually becomes pustular and then crusts over a period of 7 to 10 days. The pain is usually described by patients as burning, throbbing or stabbing, and usually lasts up to 1 month. A few patients may have generalized symptoms such as headache, fever, malaise or fatigue.

The Ayurvedic treatment of herpes zoster is aimed at controlling the pain, treating localized symptoms and preventing complications like neuralgia. In the initial stages, when the disease presents in the form of blisters, an ointment containing medicines like Chandan (Santalum album), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Usheer (Vetiveria zizanioidis) and Haridra (Curcuma longa) is applied on the affected area. Once the blisters collapse with ulcer formation, an ointment containing Haridra, Daruharidra (Berberis aristata), Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra) and Mandukparni (Centella asiatica) is applied on the affected skin. This application is continued till a complete resolution of the lesions.

In order to control pain, medicines like Triphala-Guggulu, Yograj-Guggulu, Kaishor-Guggulu, Sinhanaad-Guggulu, Trayodashang-Guggulu, Vat-Gajankush-Ras, Maha-Vat-Vidhwans-Ras and Vish-Tinduk-Vati are used. Herbal medicines which have a definite antiviral action are used to control the herpes zoster virus. These medicines include Bhumiamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri), Yashtimadhuk, Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Bhrungraj (Eclipta alba), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) and Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa). Herpes zoster pain which lasts for more than 1 month is termed as post-herpetic neuralgia. To prevent this complication, medicines like Kaishor-Guggulu, Tapyadi-Loh, Ekang-Veer-Ras and Bruhat-Vat-Chintamani are used. Herpes zoster lesions which do not heal easily or which have a tendency to occur are indicative of a severely immuno-compromised status like HIV. In such situations, medicines like Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Bala (Sida cordifolia), Suvarna-Malini-Vasant and Suvarna-Raj-Vangeshwar-Ras are used to improve the immune status of the body.

In most patients with herpes zoster, the rash usually resolves within 2 to 3 weeks. It is important to prevent post-herpetic neuralgia, especially in elderly patients who are more prone to complications. Patients with involvement of the eyes should be referred to an Ophthalmologist for appropriate treatment.

But if sorrow and despair have found lodgment there the world's delights and grand activities are huge mountains of dreariness in which is no fascination at all, but the most intense weariness instead.

Develop the mind by educational processes and the universe is no longer the shallow thing it was before, but a comprehensive aggregate of cause and effect, of mysterious laws and forces, of deepest, grandest purposes and design. Instill lustful thoughts into it, and a world of animalism results. The suggestive fear of poverty and old age, of loss of leg, arm or ear, fear of failure, lack and limitation, fear of not getting married and fear of the divorce court after we are hooked up, fear of the circumstances and environment round about us! It is one roly-poly, whirly-gig, merry-go-round, ring-a-round-the-rosie of fear, from the time our eyes are opened to see the light of day until they are closed by the hands of another as if to cover the last long fear stare as we make our exit from this stage of life.

  6. Think health and talk health on all possible occasions, remembering that under the law of suggestion health may be made contagious as well as disease.
  7. Finally, meet the first symptom of disease with a vivid and persistent auto-suggestion of your immunity from disease or of your ability to throw it off. When you go to bed at night, direct your subjective mind to employ itself during your sleep in restoring normal conditions, strongly affirming its ability to do so; and when you rise in the morning, assume the attitude, in mind and body, of restored health and vigor. Should these prophylactic efforts fail to produce the desired effect, and should disease come upon you in spite of them, it is not the fault of the system. It is because you are not well grounded in the conditions preceded to success. Mental remedies are dependent for success upon mental conditions, just as physical remedies are dependent for their efficiency on physical conditions.
