"buy this driver and add 10 extra yards to your game"
"buy this ball for extra distance"
"Learn to swing like the pros"
"Turn more for more distance"

Whenever you look in golf magazines or watch infomercials on TV these headlines are everywhere …. its no wonder that this distance message has rubbed off on the struggling golfer.

Yet, when you do the math on what distances you require to break 90 off the standard white tees on the typical golf course, the numbers will surprise you …

Average distances to Break 90

Let's assume you play on an average length course of 6,100 yards. I am going to throw some average distance requirements per stroke out there to break 90 that is based on different putting abilities …

45 putts / round – average distance / stroke to shoot 89 = 138 yards
40 putts / round – average distance / stroke to shoot 89 = 124 yards
36 putts / round – average distance / stroke to shoot 89 = 115 yards
(average distance = 6,100 ((89 – # of putts / round))

For ladies on a 5,500 yard course the yards are less:

45 putts / round – average distance / stroke to shoot 89 = 128 yards
40 putts / round – average distance / stroke to shoot 89 = 115 yards
36 putts / round – average distance / stroke to shoot 89 = 104 yards

As you look at these numbers, even some absolute beginners using a set of old clubs can reach these distances!

So where is the need for distance?

If you are any good at putting you could probably get round the course in 89 using only a 9/8 iron and a putter …

"Ah, but that is not how the game is played …" some say.

That is certainly true. But then I would ask "how should you play the game and what are you trying to achieve?" …

Change of Thinking

In showing you these distances and prodding these questions I am not trying to be critical of those who play in the 90's or above …

I am simply trying to help you clarify the numbers to encourage you think a little more about how you may be approaching your own game.

Of course I would not suggest you go around the course with nothing but an 8 iron and a putter. That is silly. However, these numbers clearly suggest that you do not need a 230 yard drive either.

So what can we learn from just studying these distances?

1. For starters, if you are able to average a 2 putt on every green for your round, you remove a huge distance requirement from your game.

This then should be your top priority for breaking 90 … practice putting at home to get your putting average down to 36 or less per round.

2. The second observation that jumps out at us is that distance is not an issue if you are able to execute every shot cleanly during the round without a miss hit or duff shot.

Swing consistency becomes key, not distance.

Here is how your thinking and mental approach to your swing has to change …

It does not matter how far you hit the ball, but it is vital that you hit every shot with some level of consistency.

Consistency comes with a lot of practice, but it can also come from making smart decisions with your shot making …

Operating at the Top End of your Swing Capability Curve

Your judgment calls on distance and club selection can seriously affect your swing consistency … this is all a "mental process" and has nothing to do with your physical capability.

Let me show you an example …

Let's say that you are faced with an approach shot to the green of 140 yards. What are your choices?

Well, on the range you know that you can reach 140 yards with an 8 iron …. in most cases you might have a go with that decision.

How confident do you feel at executing that shot? What are the likely outcomes if you do not pull it off?

Here is what I observe with many high handicap golfers when making decisions of this nature …

9 times out of 10 they are always short of the green. This is because of either a complete miss hit duff shot or they did not catch the ball cleanly at contact.

On top of this the accuracy of the shot is off as well.

The reason for this is that they are swinging at the high end of their swing capability curve trying to execute a "full turn", because that is what they have read, or were told will give them the "most distance".

If they adopt this same mental approach to swinging with a full turn during their practice sessions with all their clubs, their decisions on distance ability with each club are going to be influenced by the results they achieve on the range.

The shots they remember are the shots they hit well that go a mile, but do they remember how far they hit the balls that did not go so well? …. probably not.

Whenever you try to run a "system" at the high of it capability it is going to experience some failure.

The same can be said of your golf swing. Try to swing with a full turn on every shot, and you will experience failure more times than not.

That is because with a full backswing extension you are more likely to experience:
o Balance problems
o Breakdowns of the left arm
o Excessive tension in the arms that leads to a prerelease of the hands from the top of the swing and poor timing

to mention but a few …

OK. Now I want you to consider your chances of reaching the same 140 yards with either a 7 iron or even a 6 iron. Are you likely to be short with either of these two clubs?

The answer is, "no, only if I miss hit the shot completely. If anything I may overshoot the target …"

I want you to ask yourself why you put yourself under distance pressure for this 140 yard shot?

Why do you need to operate your swing at the high end of your capacity curve and push the extremes of your swing limits with an 8 iron, knowing that you are likely to experience a miss hit?

This is totally unnecessary. You have the option of selecting down a club that you know you will reach the distance with a much higher degree of certainty.

This same thought process can be applied to every swing decision you make with every iron you have in the bag.

The only time you reach a point where you have to make a full turn to increase distance comes with clubs at the low end such as a 3 iron, 3 wood and driver where you no longer have the option to choose down a club.

Going to club down for all of your distance decisions changes your mental approach from one of going for distance, to one of going for consistency.

The first reaction you have when you make this decision is worrying about over shooting the target.

This thought process forces you to shorten your backswing so that you take some "heat" out of the shot.

When you shorten your backswing:

o Your balance is better and your swing is much easier to time.

o With improved balance also comes improved accuracy.

So, club down and shorten your backswing for improved consistency …

Set a scoring goal for each hole

You can reduce the pressure to swing for distance from your swing even further by accurately knowing what distance you need to achieve your scoring goal for every hole to break 90.

On a par 72 hole course you need to score 17 over par in order to achieve an 89.

You can break that down to a scoring goal for every hole of a 1 over par, only needing a single par on any one hole somewhere during the round.

Now let's look at how this information affects your decision making and club selection on the course …

For those of you who feel you need to add more distance to your game but have yet to break 90, I want to try and dispel this mental obstacle once and for all with this following example …

Let's put you under a pressure for distance scenario on the course by imaging you are standing on the tee of a 410 yard par 4. Does this intimidate you? You bet!

"I need to have a long drive so that I can give myself every chance of getting on or near the green with my approach shot …"

"It is holes like this that bring out the need for that 230 yard drive! Even with that drive I still have 180 yards to go with the next shot."

How do you rate your chances of pulling off consistent shots under this amount of pressure?

Not very high is my guess … "

Before you reach into the bag for the heavy artillery and psych yourself up for a monster drive, step back for a minute and think about what you are trying to achieve on this hole.

You are not trying to play for par, you are trying to play for a one over par because that is your goal for this hole.

Come to think of it, even a 5 handicap golfer does not need to go for par on this hole because horses of this nature usually have a handicap index of 5 or less!

Knowing you have 5 strokes to meet your goal, how can you best use those strokes to make each shot as simple as possible?

The trick lies in working your way back from the green to the tee, not from the tee to the green in your club selection …

Work backwards from the green for shot simplicity and improved consistency

First of all, I am going to assume you took note of my first observation and have practiced your putting at home and feel pretty good at averaging 2 putts per green.

That leaves you with 3 shots with which to work your way back to the tee to cover the 410 yards.

The first decision you need to make is at what distance and with what club can I feel confident at getting anywhere on the green 9 times out of 10, remembering that there is no need to push your swing to it's high limits for distance.

Let's say that a 65 yard pitching wedge comes to mind.

Ok, now let's work back a little further and decide what would be a reasonable shot that you feel pretty confident at getting you within that 65 yard approach shot range even from light rough.

Maybe a 160 yard iron or hybrid club.

What's left for your drive …. 185 yards, which for some of you may be a 3 wood distance.

What this exercise does for you is reduce the pressure to swing for distance completely from every shot tee to green. You will be able to swing well within your distance capability … especially if you also club down.

Your chances of implementing this strategy with reasonable consistency compared to the "conventional approach" is going to be much higher because you are not swinging at the high end of your swing range.

On top of this, if you successfully land your third shot on the green, you give yourself a one putt chance of a par!

Now compare that opportunity to the "conventional approach" where you would probably be satisfied with a one or even a two over par ….

Adding the Extra Shot and Shorten your Approach Shot

The one over scoring goal on every hole but one to break 90 allows you to design your tee to green play with an "extra shot" compared to a regulation strategy.

That extra shot on all the par 4's and par 5's brings the distance you require for every shot considerably.

Knowing this allows you to back off and swing well within your distance capability by clubbing down.

The extra shot also allows you to select a shooter approach shot on every hole which improves your changes of getting on the green.

This helps you avoid many wasted short game shots from around the green which are wonderful shot consumers for high handicap players who have not developed a short game.

Breaking 90

As I have shown you in this article, knowing the distance numbers to break 90 takes away the pressure to operate at the high end of your swing capability on every shot

Making smart club choices by clubbing down, also eliminates this distance pressure.

The strategy of adding the extra shot from tee to green to shorten your approach shots on every hole, not only reduced wasted shots from around the green, you also give yourself more par opportunities for a one putt par.

The desire to add more distance to your game can be a major mental barrier that is preventing you from lowering your scores and reaching your goal of 89.

Make the mental shift to thinking more on how to improve consistency by swinging well within you distance capabilities and your scores will drop significantly in a short period of time …

Glaucoma and Laser Surgery

Certain factors can cause poor drainage of aqueous fluids in the eye and this results in the build up of pressure which can cause damage to the optic nerves that helps the eye function for vision. This leads to an eye disease called glaucoma and if left untreated, it can cause permanent loss of vision. Through the years many techniques and procedures have been developed to diagnose and treat it and at this time the most promising solution is glaucoma laser surgery.

Glaucoma comes in different forms and determining what type of glaucoma a patient has helps in determining what treatment options there are. Initially, in an attempt to relieve pressure in the eye, doctors give eye drops and medication taken orally are given. If it does not help, then glaucoma laser surgery is the next option.

Argon laser trabeculoplasty is one form of glaucoma laser surgery technique used primary open angle glaucoma. Tiny burns are made into the trabecular network of the eyes to improve the draining and flow of aqueous fluid in the eyes. A specific form of this procedure is selective laser trabeculoplasty or SLT. This uses laser beams to remove only very specific target cells in the trabecular network. As a result, it improves the flow of aqueous fluids and relieves the pressure.

In some cases, it may take two sessions and in some, it may require repeating the procedure after two or three years. This, however is recommended because it avoids the need for medication after the procedure. It is also the glaucoma laser surgery procedure commonly recommended for pigmentary glaucoma which is common among males of African-American descent.

Angle closure glaucoma results if the space or angle between the iris and cornea is too narrow and this results in poor drainage of aqueous fluids. Peripheral iridotomy is the glaucoma laser surgery option for this type.

To relieve the pressure, laser beams are used to make a small hole on the iris. The space or angle widens as the iris moves away from it. This corrects the flow of aqueous fluids.

For more severe cases of glaucoma, the procedure usually recommended is laser cyclophotocoagulation. An example is when new blood vessels are formed in the eye as a result of diabetic retinopathy. The new blood vessels can seriously affect the flow of aqueous fluids in the eye resulting in pressure buildup. This leads to a form of glaucoma called neovascular glaucoma.

For this glaucoma laser surgery procedure, the doctor uses endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation to observe the ciliary body. This is also connected to an endoscopic camera. This will then guide the application of the laser beam to treat the ciliary body so it reduces or stops the production of fluids. By using a laser beam, part of the ciliary body is destroyed so that it no longer produces aqueous fluid. Less aqueous fluid means less pressure on the eye.

These glaucoma laser surgery procedures are usually painless. Some may feel a slight stinging sensation but apart from that, no major pain is felt. After undergoing glaucoma laser surgery, some rest for a few days is required and soon one can go back to the normal daily routine.

Also, in some cases, the patient needs to take some medication to relieve some minor discomforts that may appear after the procedure. Eye inflammation and slight risks in developing cataract may be some of the problems that may arise after each glaucoma laser surgery.

Glaucoma is a serious problem that can lead to permanent damage to the eye. It is important that it is well-understood and that a number of techniques are available to treat it.

Laser surgery is fast becoming a popular option for glaucoma treatment. The techniques are also becoming more and more advanced and refined to ensure that treatment results only in success and there is complete absence of discomfort during and after the treatment. They are also being improved to make the positive results long lasting, making glaucoma laser surgery a very promising form of treatment for glaucoma patients. As with any medical problem, thoroughly discuss all options with your physician.

The Stages of Anorexia

Anorexia nervosa is one of the most prevalent and dangerous eating disorders known to man. It is known to many in that it is characterized by the sufferer refusing to eat and losing extreme amounts of weight until they often resemble nothing more than a skin covered skeleton which can often lead to death in the most severe cases.

The stages of anorexia can be different for different people but they all follow a similar pattern in that the symptoms and effects worsened as time progresses. Anorexia nervosa is a treatable disorder, but there is no known specific cure. It is important to note the different stages listed below and their characteristics so that you can begin to identify if you or someone you know is suffering from this condition. In either case, seek treatment immediately so that the condition does not worsen.

Stage One of anorexia may simply resemble someone deciding to take part in a rigorous exercise program. They may exercise every day but simply appear as a fitness conscious individual.

Stage Two occurs when the individual begins obsessing not only about exercise, but food as well. This can be constantly talking about what they had to eat or how long it’s been since they had their last meal.

Stage Three is often characterized by the sufferer obsessing about trying to eat the fewest calories possible in order to still have energy to exercise and lose additional weight. This may be weeks or months and actually having the disorder and physical characteristics such as looking gaunt or pale or having circles below the eyes may exist.

Stage Four may be recognized as the person begins obsessing about their appearance in the mirror in a very public way. This may be pulling up their shirt to see how many of the ribs they can visibly count, or looking at their back to see if their spine or other bones are showing. Many people work to keep this condition private so friends and family may never witnessed this personally.

Stage Five shows just how much of a downward spiral can occur because of this harmful disorder. As anorexia progresses, one of the symptoms is that the sufferer will begin to gauge how many days they can go without eating before they faint. At this stage, fainting is common. Friends and family should certainly take notice and begin to seek treatment for this individual immediately. At this stage, the disorder has truly taken hold and the ones suffering may be completely helpless to do anything about it.

Stage Six and beyond simply sees the downward spiral continue, often at a rapid pace. Fainting spells, bloody noses, incredibly thin physiques, and extreme lack of energy are common characteristics of later stage anorexia.

Please keep in mind that the above stages are guidelines and indicative of many, but not all sufferers of anorexia. The most important thing to look for is long-term weight loss coupled with obsessive behaviors about exercise and food. It is extremely important that if you think you or someone you love may be suffering, seek treatment immediately. Anorexia kills, don’t let this happen to you or anyone you know.

The Gift of Pain

Some time ago I found myself fascinated reading the biography of Dr. Paul Wilson Brand (1914-2003). A world-renowned, extraordinary, gifted Orthopedic Surgeon who unraveled the riddle of leprosy which has plagued the world for centuries.

The son of missionary parents, Dr. Brand spent his early years in the mountains of southwest India. Dr. Paul Brand did not set out to become a doctor. Initially he refused to follow in his father’s footsteps and study medicine, and he trained as a carpenter and builder. This skill he later used in a remarkable way – teaching leprosy-affected people with damaged, insensitive hands how to do carpentry and woodwork without further injuring their fingers and hands. It was in India that Dr. Brand first came across “leprosy beggars”, deformed, blind and crippled by the disease. Deeply affected by the acute anguish and isolation of people afflicted with leprosy, he began to ask the tough questions: “Do the hands and feet of leprosy-affected people just fall off? What causes the terrible deformities of leprosy? Can anything be done to prevent them or restore the damage?”

Very little was known about the true cause of leprosy deformities. It was generally believed that the hands and feet of infected people simply disintegrated or rotted away as a direct result of the disease. A senior colleague, Dr. Robert Cochrane, challenged Dr. Paul Brand to use his skills as an orthopedic surgeon to find out why people with leprosy developed deformed hands, and to try to find an effective treatment. Dr. Brand drew on experience he had gained during WWII with polio-paralyzed and war-injured hands. He undertook extensive research on damaged hands to test muscle strength and sensation. There were many obstacles to overcome – not the least being prejudice and resistance to using surgical skills on people with leprosy, and allowing them access to hospital care. Through his research in South India, Dr. Brand changed forever the world’s perceptions and treatments of leprosy-affected people.

First, he pioneered the startling idea that the loss of fingers and toes in leprosy was due entirely to infection and was thus preventable.

Second, because leprosy as an infection attacks chiefly the nervous system, resultant tissue abuse occurs and the patient loses the warnings of pain. This was a total new idea!

Dr. Paul Brand actually discovered the gift of physical pain, claiming that because leprosy destroyed the sensation of pain in affected parts of the body, pain-deprived people inadvertently injured, destroyed themselves or lost limbs and body parts. He once watched horrified as a person with leprosy reached directly into a charcoal fire to retrieve a potato someone had dropped. He saw one man hard at work in the garden, oblivious to blood running down his hand; Dr. Brand examined the shovel and found a nail protruding just at the spot his hand had been gripping. Foot injuries were easy to explain. If an ankle turned, tearing tendon and muscle, the leprosy patient would simply adjust and walk with a crooked gait. No warning system of pain announced the need to rest the ankle or seek treatment. Dr. Brand discovered that rats and animals would come into the open-air wards at night while his patients slept and caused injury to their body limbs… The patients slept through it all! Later on Dr. Brand was able to connect his research to the most advanced cases of diabetes where people loose sensitivity to pain!

Dr. Brand’s biography made a profound impact on the way I think about pain. Never before, in my wildest imagination I thought I could actually call PAIN a gift… Never before, I understood what the “Hell of painlessness” must be like! What happens to the soul of a person that disconnects from pain through drugs? What is the “painless” behavior like?

Our American culture predisposes us to avoid pain, run away from pain and deny pain at almost any cost. We simply hate pain! Don’t we? We don’t know what to do with someone in pain. We institutionalize that person as soon as possible or avoid them altogether! Yet, pain is a sign of life! Physical pain is a sign of life. Emotional pain is a sign of emotional life.

During the last few months I have experienced the most intense, excruciating emotional pain of my entire life. It doesn’t matter what the source of my pain is for the purpose of this article.

Here is what I have learned about the “gift of pain” in the agony of my own soul:

1. Emotional pain can be a gift from God.

My goodness! If anything, emotional pain has just reminded me how alive I am! How I experience loss says a lot about me! I have often been reminded during these last few months that my intense pain is not abnormal. It simply mirrored back to me the fact that I am a good guy, a passionate guy, a guy with intense feelings about certain things. A guy who cares! Nothing wrong with that. The absence of pain would have meant one of two things. Either, I don’t have a heart or I may have been “drugging” myself to make it through.

2. Whenever I deny initial emotional pain I will most likely lose parts of myself.

Under the influence of “numbing” experiences (drugs, alcohol, entertainment, sex, distractions, etc) I will slowly lose parts of myself I may never recover ever again or may have to be re-constructed in a long period of time. I have faced pain in the past, and I have “run” away from it. In attempting to “numb” my pain, though, looking back, I see how I betrayed people, lost their trust and hurt many innocent people. Some of them will never trust me again! I have had to learn to live with that! This time I chose to experience the fullness of my pain and let it speak to me! The difference? Weeks of excruciating pain while remaining totally alive. The best spiritual experience I have had in ten over years. Perhaps my entire life. Amazing!

3. When emotional pain occurs one can not succumb to those who are not able to deal with their own pain.

I was very careful not to share my pain with people that would tell me, “Well, let me help you alleviate your pain.” Or, “Come on, Harold, move on.” Or, “Harold, you’ll be ok!.” Or, “Harold, you don’t need this BS, anyway!” Or, “Harold, you are a good guy, you don’t deserve that!” Or, worst yet, “Harold, you are hurting, uh? Well, you did it to yourself. You are “one penny too short and one minute too late. Face it up boy!” (Ouch!)

I kept saying to myself, “I will only call or talk to friends that will allow me to experience my pain fully.” I have those friends, and those are the ones I went to. Friends who let me cry. Friends who were OK with my hurt. Friends who did not help me to run away. Friends who did not assist me in alleviating what I was feeling. Those friends are the ones who know that pain can cleanse the soul! It worked! Healing happens faster when you handle pain the smart way!

4. Excruciating emotional pain led me to God.

Pain served a purpose and it led me to the deepest experience of God I have had in my entire life. My mind is fresh and clean. The fear is gone. God did it for me! And those of you who know me, also know I am not a religious guy at all.

5. The gift of pain changed my perception of many people around.

Suddenly I found myself reconnecting with people I had avoided because their pain was too much for me to handle. Suddenly I discovered in them fellow pilgrims! They understood me! Some wonderful things happened regarding relationships in the last few months!

6. The gift of pain reminded me that the most important thing in life is people and relationships.

No money, no prestige, no reputation could have ever alleviated my pain. No temporary success would have done what pain did. No quick “fix” would have dealt with the real issues. It’s like with our bodies. There is so much Tylenol you can take to calm your headache before you begin to wonder what’s really wrong with your head, right? There is so much running away from people you dislike you can do, before you look at yourself in the mirror and wonder what’s going on deep, deep, inside your soul? How many people are you going to hurt in revenge before you realize you’ve got a problem yourself? How many people are you going to blame for your misfortune in life before you realize no one controls your destiny but yourself? How many times can someone numb himself with money, religion, power, work, success before one realizes one needs people and deep abiding relationships?

The gift of pain…

I chose to celebrate pain without knowing what I was doing.

It did not make me better than anyone else. It just turned the light switch back on in my soul and I saw what I never saw before! That’s it!

Looking back, all I would have had to do to experience “painless hell” (emotional leprosy) would have been to run away, get people who would help me alleviate my pain, get busy with life, ignore God, get busy and keep moving on to the next thing. Like on a treadmill! Even go to therapy to obtain a good doses of “analysis paralysis.” (Very often we avoid pain by analysis) The drumbeat of “painless hell” is move on, move, move on, keep going! Don’t stop to think! For thinking is the beginning of pain.

The gift of pain…

Tears of pain cleansed my soul.

Pain made me alive again.

The gift of pain made me see the stars again.

The gift of pain reconnected me with the people I love the most.

The gift of pain made me see our seductive culture of denial with disgust not wanting to be a part of it while helping others get in touch with their pain.

The gift of pain reminded me how alive I am and how good my heart is!

Today, I thank God for the gift of pain.

I know it will protect me from losing what’s most special to me!

The story of the Bible on how Christ healed leprosy has a new meaning for me now. When Christ healed leprosy in the ancient times he actually healed people from the “hell of painlessness” He gave them back the GIFT OF PAIN! They were able to hurt again! Wooww!

The same is true today!

Pain protects us from self-destruction. Imagine how much better our world would be if we would allow pain to transform us into sensitive, compassionate, loving people. If we would allow pain to resolve issues that hurt us and others.

Instead of running away from pain, embrace it! Pain will direct you to God and to others with whom you will connect in the most meaningful way. Pain is one of the most intense expressions of life!

Shingles Rash – Symptoms and Treatment

Shingles rash is a skin infection caused by varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. Once an individual has had chickenpox, traces of the virus remain dormant in the nervous system and are never completely cleared from the body. Later on, certain conditions such as emotional stress, immune deficiency from AIDS or chemotherapy, or cancer may reactivate the virus and cause shingle. Adults over the age of 60 are more susceptible to shingle rash.

Symptoms of Shingles Rash

It is estimated that up to a million cases of shingles occur every year in the US Before the rash becomes visible, the patient may experience several days of burning pain and sensitive skin. At this point, determining the cause of the pain may be difficult. Symptoms of shingle rash depend on the type of nerve affected by the virus. Although it is caused by chickenpox virus, the rash is different from chickenpox rash. Chickenpox affects most areas of the body, while shingle rash affects a specific area of ​​the skin, usually occurring as a band on one side of the body. The rash usually forms on the chest, back and face.

A rash from shingles appears as small blisters on a red base over a period of three to five days. Clusters of fluid-filled blisters form progressively. After a few days, the blisters pop and ooze fluid. They often dry out, form a crust, and start to heal. It usually takes about 30 days from start to finish for the blisters to heal, leaving behind scars and skin discoloration.

Patients may also suffer from headaches, chills, abdominal pain and increased fatigue. In rare cases, a fever may accompany the rash. Also, the pain may continue even after the rash disappears.

Effective treatments for shingle rash include the antiviral drugs famciclovir (Famvir), acyclovir (Zovirax), and valacyclovir (Valtrex). Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and narcotic pain control medication may also be administered for pain management.

People over the age of 60 can have themselves vaccinated to reduce the occurrence and severity of shingles.

The primary goal in the treatment of shingle rash is to shorten the duration of the rash, speed up the healing process, manage the pain, and reduce the risk of complications. The affected area must be kept clean and dry, and bathing is permitted. Cool compresses and calamine lotion may also be used to control the itch.

Are You at Risk to Be Buried Alive?

As we sit on our sofa and watch the evening news on the television we sadly view all the destruction that has transpired in Oklahoma. Watching with intent eyes we begin to ponder the possible purchase of a safe room or storm shelter. After witnessing all the horrid deaths which have taken place we go to the internet and beginning researching these safe areas that can be built into your homestead. Naturally, our hearts go out to these families who have lost loved ones in this disaster although you may be thinking along the lines of getting either a safe room or a storm shelter. In our way of thinking we would consider this as an emergency insurance policy and in many ways we would be right in viewing it as such. We continuously see the rescue efforts from the personnel attempting to free the people from the ruble of the tornado aftermath and questions start to come to mind.

What we are not seeing are the tales relating to those people who had the foresight to purchase and install a safe room within their home prior to a disaster. Are they as safe as we may initially think? We find stories originating from Moore Oklahoma that people are now being rescued form their safe rooms or storm shelters at alarming rates. These people are essentially trapped in their shelters from all the scattered debris. In short, they are buried alive.

This certainly appears to be quite a predicament since they were responsible enough to research, invest and build their safe room or shelter. They equally made proper plans for the safety of their family in the event of an emergency such as this only to discover that they would become victims of their own endeavors.

Are we advocating the elimination of safe rooms or emergency storm shelters? Not a chance however we are suggesting a few additional survival tools being included in your preps. My family and I had encountered tornado weather when we were stationed in New Mexico, Nebraska and Kansas and if I had a choice I would have constructed either a safe room inside the basement of our home or a storm Shelter close by. I can recall being notified of approaching tornados and every eye in the neighborhood appeared to be aimed skyward as we all watched for this dreadful weather phenomenon. I know first hand at the dangers posed by tornadoes so I would never recommend the elimination of safe rooms though it would not hurt in the least to include a pick ax and sometimes a hydraulic tool kit and make sure that you know how to use these items in the event of an emergency.

While we fully understand that it is nearly impossible to completely safeguard our family and self from the destructive nature of a tornado there are some things an individual can accomplish to increase the likelihood of survival. First they can build that safe room or storm shelter we spoke earlier but before we proceed to far into our discussion let's briefly differentiate between a safe room and a storm shelter.

Although the terms are generally used synonymously they are not the same.
Typically, the safe room is located above ground and usually within the perimeter of the home. It is fortified so that in the event of an emergency people can enter the room and remain safe. This has the advantage of keeping them safe during a natural disaster or during an attempted home break in. During a tornado a safe room can add a bit of protection but is not the ideal conditions.

A safe room should have a means by which the occupants can communicate with the outside world such as a cell phone or land line. Usually, it will be equipped with a well stocked first aid kit, a flashlight, several blankets and a supply of packaged foods. If you are like me you will also want to keep several gas masks and a portable toilet on hand. A safe room built to proper code can to a degree withstand severe weather much better than the average home would. By knowing where you should build your safe room it can help you provide the most protection possible. You may wish to consider your basement, a first-floor room or in your garage.

As stated, a fortified safe room will provide a certain measure of protection which is missing from the usual home. You are much closer to your area of ​​safety than if you had to travel to a public shelter and you will likely feel better psychologically in your own room. The major disadvantage is that since your safe room is located above-ground they are simply not viewed to be as safe as an underground option.

Storm shelters on the other hand are different from the safe rooms in several ways.

They are built underground and not within the confines of a person's home. A storm shelter is designed specifically to keep the occupants safe during any sort of inclement weather and especially when confronted with tornadoes. We find that storm Shelters are built for single family use and are generally close enough to the home so that one can quickly gain access to it however it is also far enough away that in the event of a collapsed home, the escape door would not be cover up with debris. Storm shelters should be stocked with drinking water, packaged foods, first-aid kits and a means of communication in case you need to call for help. Being built under ground the storm shelter is considered safer than a safe room which is above-ground.

The downfalls of a storm shelter are the initial cost involved. It is usually very expensive to have one built and installed. Since it is a separate building from the family's usual home the individuals must leave the home to enter the shelter. In some cases this can be dangerous for the family if done at the very last minute.

There are several items of interest that must be taken into consideration when you employ safe rooms and storm Shelters. First and high on our list is the possibility that you can become trapped in your room or shelter from the various debris which has fallen. This rubbish could prevent you from leaving your sanctuary when it is safe to.

Secondly, and just as dangerous is the thought that during an adverse condition you stand a very good chance that you may drown in your safe location as a result of a broken water main. Combine both of these possibilities together and they can spell a dangerous situation. What this is telling us is that when planning your safe room or shelter it is advantageous to use care and good sense in its construction as well as its planning.

We have already determined that the storm Shelter is superior over the safe room so if money is the primary obstacle you might wish to consider something similar to the old time root cellars from days past. Build it away from trees and other structures that could trap you in it. Maintain multiple means by which you could egress the location so that if one exit is blocked you could escape by way of the second. Above all do not forget that even though you have stocked up on food, water and various medical supplies you should also have in your tool kit a chainsaw and some sort of hydraulic lift kit to help you get out if trapped inside.

We as preppers may develop a new interest in these types of safe rooms and Shelters as a result of the disaster but we also will need to develop a good construction plan which would keep us out of arms way when the inevitable hits.
