Improve Vision Naturally – How to Cure Glaucoma Naturally

While most people are familiar with the term "glaucoma," not many people know exactly what it is, so what is glaucoma? Glaucoma is a deteriorating vision problem which is caused by excess strain on the eyes. While the cause may sound as if those who have glaucoma are in pain, the truth is that most people who are diagnosed with it do not even know or feel their symptoms. If you are diagnosed with this condition, it can be a frightening experience, mainly due to the fact that the first indications do not show up until it is too late to fix the problem. As soon as vision quality starts to deteriorate, there is no way to reverse its effects.

Tunnel vision and having a narrow line of sight are the first symptoms which manifest themselves. There is not much room to improve or repair this, as they quickly progress to the final stage of glaucoma – blindness.

Doctors believe that glaucoma is caused by bad circulation around the eye sockets, clogged channels, andadequate drainage of the eyes. These factors are generally caused excess mental stress, eye strain, and high levels of toxins present in the body.

The only "cure" for glaucoma is not really a cure at all, but just medication which is given to treat the symptoms, but not cure the problem. The medication works to relieve tension and increase drain from the eyes. Unfortunately, the majority of people diagnosed with glaucoma still become blind. The medicine is given to allow the patient to see a little while longer, adding life to the vision cycle, until blindness historically sets in.

Because glaucoma is mainly brought on by stress, the stress will not stop once the disease is diagnosed. More often than not, stress levels get higher because many patients are overly concerned by the threat of going blind, which is inevitable. All too often, sufferers of this disease occupy themselves daily with these stressful thoughts and make the symptoms markedly worst.

All patients of glaucoma should receive medical attention as blindness is unavoidable. With this in mind, there are also many things that sufferers can do, taking precautions to cure the symptoms yourself by relaxing the eyes. Each night when you go to sleep, make sure to relax completely before you go to sleep. When you are in bed, close your eyes, and create a mental image of your muscles becoming more relaxed from head to toe. Do your best to try and concentrate especially on the areas and muscles around the eye sockets. By doing this, you will unduly wake up more refreshed, and releasing a lot of pressure which leads to blindness.

While having glaucoma is certainly scary thing to think about, learning how to put the eyes at ease is the best natural way to cure this vision-threatening condition.

Cure For the Flu

The majority of people make a full recovery from flu without needing treatment, by just letting it run its course with the help of an analgesic such as Aspirin (children should not be given Aspirin as it can cause damage to the brain) or Ibuprofen if it is felt necessary. But there are exceptions. Flu can cause serious complications in infants and in people with pre-existing medical conditions, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), kidney disease, heart and liver disease, and a weakened immune system, and those over 65 years of age .

DO ANTIVIRAL DRUGS CURE FLU

No. Antiviral drugs can stop the virus from spreading, and less the risk of complications setting in, and help the patient recover sooner. Antibiotics will have zero effect on a cure for flu, and they will not normally be medically prescribed as they have no effect on a virus infection.

WHAT TREATMENTS WORK FOR SWINE FLU

Tamiflu:

This is the brand name of (Oseltamivir) and is manufactured by the Swiss firm Roche Laboratories is effective against influenza type A and type B. Type A (H1N1) is the current version of swine flu. Tamiflu needs to be taken within 48 hours of getting the first symptoms of flu, which usually starts with a fever, aching muscles, chills, sore throat and possibly a cough. If you have any of these symptoms it is important to drink plenty of fluids, as the increased body temperature will cause fluid loss due to dehydration.

Research has shown that Tamiflu is not a cure for flu but is likely to reduce flu symptoms by a few days and can also be prescribed by Doctors to people who have recently traveled to countries which have a high incidence of the virus. Patients who take the drug are less likely to suffer from bronchitis and pneumonia.

Tamiflu is prescribed in capsule or liquid form to be taken over a 5 day period, and as a preventive for a longer period, usually over 10 days, and is not given to children under 12 months old. Researchers looked out adults who had been in contact or nursing a person with fl, those taking Tamiflu were up to 90% less likely to catch flu themselves.

Relenza:

This is the brand name for (Zanamivir) and is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, an antiviral drug and is taken orally as a spray in powder form using a Diskhaler. It is usually taken twice a day for 5 days to treat flu. As with Tamiflu it should be taken within 2 days of the sunset of the same symptoms as above. If you are nursing or living with someone with flu then it can be taken once a day for 28 days as a preventative measure.

Relenza is not recommended for patients with lung problems such as asthma or COPD or emphysema, or children under 12.

Children and adolescents taking Relenza have experienced some side effects, such as anxiety, hallucinations, seizures, and depression and even suicidal tendencies. Doctors have warned patients of the possible side effects and unusual behavior and to seek medical advice should this occur.

Cure Glaucoma – The Best Tips to Do It

Cure glaucoma using a few very efficient treatments. As you probably know this is one of the main causes for blindness. The fluid pressure within the eyeball is increased and the surface of the eye is harder. The good news is that you can treat it. It's important to consult a doctor in time.

Amino Acids are useful for treating glaucoma. For example Acetyl will stop the damage from the optic nerve. Glucosamine is also useful because it will reduce the pressure. For a better protection of the optic nerve you can also use Lutein. It's better to use these cures as soon as you will notice the first glaucoma signs.

Cure glaucoma by consuming minerals and lipids. Apply Forskolin as eye drops to lower the intraocular pressure. Keep in mind that in order to find the best cure you need to find the cause of the disease. For example it can appear as a result of Chromium deficiency.

Treating glaucoma can be very easy. Vitamins like B1, B12 and C can cure the intraocular pressure by 21-84%. Vitamin E can also help prevent and cure this eye disease. You can also try Folic Acid and Lipoid Acid.

Some of the fruits and herbs can also be a great help when it comes to treating glaucoma. You should know the bilberry contains everything you need to treat your eyes. As herbs you can use Camu-Camu and Ginkgo. This will improve the blood circulation. Cod Liver oil will also help lowering the pressure.

Try to do some research to learn about some eye exercises which can cure the glaucoma. You can do these exercises at any time of the day at home. Every day you should reserve a few minutes for your eye exercises. The eye exercises can be more efficient than you think.

How to Treat Baldness?

What is baldness? In medical terms baldness is known as Alopecia. Baldness is the loss of hair and the scalp becomes visible. This condition is more prevalent in men than women. Hair loss is mainly due to age, illness, heredity, changes in hormones etc.

In male pattern baldness the loss of hair is on the front portion of the head, which is known as the crown. Some men lose all their hair on the head too. In female pattern baldness too, the hair gets thin all over the head or mainly in the crown and front position. In female pattern baldness, it is very rare to see fully bald women.

How to treat baldness? The doctor takes into account the age, heath condition, family history, tolerance for certain medicines etc. There is no treatment for baldness but hair replacement surgery can be done to fix some hair in the bald spot on the head. This is a little painful process. 99% of baldness has no cure through medications. There are lots of medications available over the counter for alopecia, but most of them are of no use. The baldness in men starts in the shape of "M" and the hair becomes very thin and small. Baldness could lead to low self-confidence and low self-esteem.

Shiny top on the head is always something, that could make a person lose his self-esteem. Though slowdown in the process of hair loss can be achieved, hair growth is not possible. If baldness is detected early then certain precautions can be taken to prevent further falling of hair.

Eight Reasons Why Dogs Chew Their Tails

Unlike tail chasing phenomenon which is quite harmless, tail chewing can prove to be a little dangerous for your four-legged friend. Hence as a dog owner should you see this behaviour repeatedly in your dogs try to stop him by using methods best suited to both you and your dog.

Although there could be various reasons why a dog is chewing on him tail some of the common ones are listed below.

1. Skin infections

This is the most common reason why your dog is chewing on his tail. Skin infections can cause discomfort and itching sensation on the tails hence to relieve that discomfort a dog will chew on his tail. Take your dog to a vet for proper examination of the tail and get the infection treated.

2. Wound/Injury

Sometimes while playing a dog might injure himself which becomes a cause of irritation and discomfort to him and to get rid of that pain the dog will either lick his tail or chew on it. This will worsen the situation, hence if you find your dog chewing his tail, talk to him in a soothing voice to calm his nerves, and then try to see what the cause of tail chewing is. If it is a wound clean it with lukewarm water and cotton and take your dog to the vet for treatment.

3. Docked tail

Tail docking is a procedure whereby groomers or vets cut the nip of the tail of the purebred dogs to conform to a breed standard. However, sometimes what happens is that while tail docking some of the nerves is also cut which induces pain in that area thus causing discomfort to the dog and thus making him gnaw his tail. Talk to the vet for the best possible advice on this.

4. Fleas/ticks

Fleas or ticks are another reason that your dog is chewing its tail. Examine the tail and watch out for fleas and ticks and spray some anti-ticks powder after thorough grooming of your dog. This will soothe his irritation and he will not chew on his tail.

5. Fractured tail

Tail fractures are very common in dogs, especially in dogs with big tails. Tail fractures happen when a tail gets stuck in a door, or someone steps on it accidentally. It is another very common reason why dogs chew on their tails. Take your dog to the vet for a treatment before it becomes bad.

6. Hunting instinct

Dogs are born hunters and it is this instinct which makes them chase their tails and if and when they finally catch hold of it to chew on their tails. However, as a pet owner you should remember that while tail chasing is not dangerous for your dog but chewing his tail is. So make efforts to stop this behaviour by getting your dog to wear a collar.

7. Compulsive behaviour

Some breeds of dogs are prone to tail chasing and tail chewing. The result is a vicious circle wherein a dog chews on his tail to get rid of irritation, however, chewing results in more irritation, and thus increased chewing. You can talk to the vet regarding it and put a collar so that he is not able to chew on his tail.

8. Previous trauma

Another reason why your dog is chewing his tail could be because of some previous trauma or wound he suffered on his tail. Sometimes the wounds heal but the pain remains and it could be this pain that causes your four-legged friend to chew on his tail. If you have just bought a puppy inquire about any trauma or wound that the dog has suffered so that you are better equipped to deal with his tail chewing phenomenon.

In all these above mentioned reasons the common thing is irritation in the tail. So if your dog is chewing on his tail remember that there is some irritation or pain that your dog is trying to get relieved off. So now that you know it is the irritation that causes your dog to chew his tail the next step should be to identify the cause of that irritation.

State Of Environmental Health In Uganda – A Community Psychologist's Perspective

Health and environment are linked. In fact, most people prefer using the phrase environmental health to have the union of the two. The union intends to show how influences of human health could come from changes in the environment.

But, within environmental health, there are other issues, like poverty, population, organic farming, environmental politics, environmental health accounting, environmental health protection and environmental stress (from humans and climatic changes). In other words, it would simply mean external factors that potentially affect health.

The environmental health continues to be under serious threat from; ever increasing population that encroach it, lack of concern from both communities and their leaders, multinational firms' scaling up of pesticide and chemical use in agriculture, and degradation of the environment -without moral conscience.

Use of chemicals is said to be highly destructive not only to weeds and pests but also to humans. Apart from losing the natural taste of food, eating food crops sprayed with chemicals, even after several hours of cooking, could soon have it set in vital organs of the body -as lungs and liver. And thereafter, lifespan of humans and animals could be lowered.

Unfortunately, suppliers of such destructive drugs are big corporate firms -that are capable of bribing off influential African leaders, employing huge numbers of people and investing heavily in advertisements. As such, it would be so easy to shut people's mouths -majority of who are beneficiaries, not to complain or advocate otherwise.

Yet, just looking at organic farming, which uses natural solutions to agricultural problems, it is something that is environmentally friendly-meaning that whatever constituent of the environment is not harmed. Rather, people practicing it co-exist with an understanding of the knowledge of sustainability in resource utilization.

Communities, in this case, are mindful of paying back to the environment from which they find food -with no pollutants, and ensuring that natural resources regenerate. There is, therefore, mutual benefit, unlike in scenarios -where use of pesticides, bush-burning and huge de-forestation for arable land is the mentality. Organic products are natural and in line with the similar natural needs of the body.

And products are what consumers could be willing to pay more for in order to safeguard life. The practice of farming is itself gentle to the earth – where both compliment each other in terms of soil conservation, conservation of vegetative cover and ensuring sustainability.

Pressure on land has forced many to migrate into game and forest reserves, and thus, catapulting into aggravated de-forestation, and extinction of rare species of both animals and plants. In south west Busoga forest reserve, in Mayuge District, it is now history that there used to be buffalos and hippopotamuses in the area.

It is a place with most violent panga-yielding encroachers ever known in Uganda. They can go as far as attacking tree-planters, cutting down artificial plantation, and even uprooting of newly planted trees.

Such grave environment degradation is what in turn adds to the already existing threat of global warming, adverse affecting ecological balances, leading to natural punishments (natural disasters), and creating conditions for disease causing germs as well as immunological disturbances.

Encroachment is a key critical issue, but governments in Africa are passive about dealing with the problem. Instead, they focus more on political goals. Politics is usually mixed with serious environmental health concerns. In Uganda, the problem, mainly, is with the forest resource.

For wild life, it is well able to quell off encroachers -according to reports by forest officials in Uganda. There is a kind of discrimination in regard to forest land protection, as would be compared to resources like oil and wild life.

With many of them being immigrants from other regions of the Uganda, the reason they (encroachers) give is lack of land for food production, where denial of forest or animal park land would mean starvation to death. In fighting to live, they are willing to be shot down.
But independent observers say encroachers are runaway criminals, who ended up in forests. And those in the forest think justice can hardly be processed to the very end, which gives them a feeling of personal safety.

The passage of local leaders has not generated action against encroachers-since they are voters capable of helping regimes in Africa stay in power. Governments, therefore, find it a delicate issue to handle. Instead, they choose to keep a blind eye as the environment is massively degraded.

While family planning would be an excellent strategy to combat growing population, the conservative lives of most Africans do not give room to the practice. Education too is out of reach for the majority of the populations around game and forest reserves -realizing that such areas tend to be remote.

The remoteness implications total absence of schools as much as the value of education. Yet, In line with education, going to school is said to discourage high birth rate and living without planning for the future. Some areas like Mayuge District have mainly junior level schools and parents value less the idea of sending children to school.

Parents think educating children is a waste of money, and that in the first place, it is hard to get. While at the same time their forest life is unpredictable -since they believe government would at one time expel them. So, surviving day by day is all they look at. Neverheadless, older men would always be on the look out for breastfeeding-pointing young girls to devour sexually. As a Consequence, many drop out before joining secondary schools.

There is public health concerns in the face of high population growth -with pressure on utilities and irresponsible behavior in handling of community resources. People in such areas, as game and forest reserves -hardly care about hygiene and sanitation. Instead, the reserves act toilets or latrines.

And because they lack clean water, they frequently "host" water-borne diseases. Worse still, inaccessibility to reproductive health services makes them prey to HIVAIDS and other STIs / STDs. Where would you find condoms while in such areas?

The implications here are; improper disposal of waste materials, early sexual intercourse and rural prostitution around town centers. Further, in such areas, sexual intercourse is like taking a cup of tea -this time round, in Western Europe context, where anytime is believed to be tea time.

Besides, lack of proper nutrition, lack of well trained personnel, and engineered lack of drugs put local residences more at the risk of dying from the mainly water-borne, sexually transmitted infections and other simple infections -that else would be treated.

Since health services are inaccessible, local residents resort to traditional medicine. Rarely would you walk in rural areas without meeting a kind of "Dr" Rashid Lukwago clinic that fill gaps where modern medicine has failed to reach. However, with integrated health service delivery system, traditional medicine and modern are one, although standards need to be set for the former.

People, there, are at compliance level. They have very little or nothing to sale so that money is generated to buy medical drugs. Herbal medicine, therefore, becomes the most appropriate to them.

Interestingly, people claim herbs have been more effective at curing serious illnesses than modern medicine. No wonder, recent health strategy called for a twin approach to treatment of diseases.

Much as the lucky urban and semi-urban areas would be found with decent health care facilities, patients find no drugs in them. What is thought to be free treatment at government health centers is never so. At best they would offer blood testing and prescription. The patient, then, plays the last role of going to the pharmaceutical shop find drugs.

Perhaps, it is cost-sharing at work that government introduced in early stages of its rule. But, remember, people are poor. If unable to buy medicinal drugs, and when traditional herbs fail, they could succumb to death.

The health sector happens to be one of the most infested government departments with acts of corruption. As a remedy, liberalization of the economy in general and health sector particularly in this case, sounded as though the answer.

However, doing so, well, helped to improve on services offered. On the other hand, only the rich could afford. The poor, as usual, were left out -and only had to pray that they do not fall sick and get close to their creator.

Not very long ago, health ministers were implicated for misuse of global funds for prevention and treatment of malaria and HIV / AIDS. As the lords where busy feasting and driving posh cars around, AIDS patients were dying. Sincerely, where are the hearts in the Uganda's political players?

Unfortunately, belief in witchcraft is another problem in such areas. Any strange incident could call for a witch-doctor's consultation or referral to culturalorms. It was not surprising; therefore, when finds by butabika hospital showed that majority of people in Uganda preferred traditional healers or faith-based prayers to health centers -as curative.

Meanwhile, the same cultural ideas could be so entrenched that changing attitudes might pose a challenge. Development pace could be slow or even static-since people find it "impossible" to think beyond simple cultural excuses. Actually, witchcraft, being at the center of cultural practices, plays roles of what science would be purposed for.

Without encouraging people to take their children to school such young people post-pone marriage, it would always be hard to control infections and diseases as much as to change their attitudes towards the mainly useless cultural beliefs.

Useless cultures could have adverse connections to almost everything in life -be it with health service promotion, proper agricultural practices and viable leadership or managerial options. All could suffer under wrong mentalities.

More so, as the saying goes, "educate a woman, educate the nation." The saying, just as from; different research findings on gender, experiences and the statistical occurrence of child abuse and neglect cases, educated men would tend to act more irresponsibly on matters of child development than educated women.

There could be a difference between good orderliness of a family of an educated mother and one -who is uneducated. Education, which is understandably, the high intellectual state and tangible resourcefulness of a person-long after he or she has left school, could help scale down incidences of child abuse and neglect.

Upon this background, prospective parents must go or return to school not just to attend classes, but to learn. Having done so, the future could have environmentally caring and patriotic generation.

How to Deal With a Gunshot or Stab Wound

Although the chances of getting shot or stabbed are slim, if you ever find yourself in a situation where you can help, or where you need to treat yourself, knowing some basic tips could make all the difference.

First of all make sure that you do not put yourself in any danger, if there is a gunman or a knife wielding maniac on the loose, do not put yourself in any further danger. By becoming a casualty yourself, you will be making the situation much worse. If you are the victim of the attack, getting away from your attacker will save you from any further harm.

Next you need to call for the emergency services, you will need immediate help and protection, which the police and ambulance services can provide. They will also provide a quick means to getting you or the patient to the hospital.

Depending where the wound is will determine how much time you will have before you or the patient becomes very poorly. If you had a wound to the chest, then depending if any of the major organs or blood vessels were damaged you may only have seconds left. If it was to the arms or legs then you may have more time. It can be a matter of a few cm’s between major arteries and organs, meaning you may not know how long you have before time starts running out. Wherever the injury is, you will need to put great pressure on the site to stop any bleeding.

Unless you are injured to the brain, heart, or lungs, blood loss will be the first thing that is going to kill you or the patient. The amount of damage from a gunshot wound or stabbing will cause significant bleeding to that site, and if any arteries are involved, then blood will be pumping out. If the injury is to a limb, try and place a tourniquet above the wound site. This could be a belt or some type of fabric. The idea of a tourniquet is to apply so much pressure that it stops the blood being pumped to that area via the major arteries. The amount of pressure will hurt, but you need to try and put as much as you can until the bleeding has stopped. If you achieve this then place great pressure on the site of the wound to help further stop the bleeding.

If you cannot get a tourniquet, then apply great pressure to the wound site.

If the injury is to the body, then you need to apply great pressure to the site. Again the idea is to stop the bleeding you can see, and the bleeding internally that you can’t. This may hurt, but the more you can stem the bleeding, the more time you are buying from bleeding out.

Keep this pressure on until the emergency services arrive to take over care.

Neurological Significance of the Disorders of Vision – Optic Neuritis, Papilledema and Optic Atrophy

Amaurosis reflects to blindness from any cause. Amblyopia refers to injury or loss of vision which is not due to an error of refiation or to other disease of the eye itself. Visual impairment can be secondary to disease process anywhere along the visual pathway from the cornea to visual cortex.

Disorders affecting the media of the eye are included under ophthalmological disorders. Diseases of retina may cause visual impairment due to involvement of the Peripheral neurones, the rods or cones. Conditions like retinities, chorioretinitis, vascular diseases, retinal detachment and hemorrhages cause patchy or even complete loss of vision depending on the extent of lesion. The optic nerve may be affected by degenerative disorders, infections, neoplasms, toxins, trauma or vascular insufficiency. Such disorders begin as a central scotoma or a partial field defect and proceed to complete visual loss in that eye.

A lesion in the chiasma produces a characteristic field defect depending on whether the lesion begins at the center of the chiasm or from the outer aspect. The former produces betemporal hemianopsia, eg, Optic nerve glioma. The latter produces binasal hemianopsia, usually due to extrinsic compression by tumor. Lesions in the Optic tract produce contralateral hemianopsia, with absent pupillary light reflex. However, if the pupillary light reflex is preserved then the lesion is either at the geniculate body or in the optical radiation. Involvement of the lower fibers of the optic radiation coursing in the temporal lobe causes contralateral superior quadrantic hemianopsia, and affection of the upper fibers in the parietal lobe causes contralateral inferior quadrantic hemianopsia. Lesions of one occipital lobe cause contralateral hemianopsia with intact pupillary light reflex. Involvement of the upper lip of the calcarine fissure causes inferior quadrantic hemianopsia, and that of the lower lip of the calcarine fissure causes superior quadrantic hemianopsia, and that of the lower lip of the clacarine fissure causes superior quandrantic hemianopsia. Incomplete lesions of the optic tract and radiation usually partial central (macular) vision. A lesion of the tip of one occipital lobe produces a central homosexual hemianopic scotoma since half the macular fibers from both eyes terminate there. Lesions of bot occipital poles as in bilateral posterior cerebral artery embolism cause bilateral central scotoma, and bilateral lesions of the entire calcarine cortex cause cortical blindness.

Optical neuritis : In this, there is unilateral or bilateral loss of vision. It may be due to demyelination of toxic damage to the optic nerve. Common causes include toxic agents such as methyl alcohol, nicotine, lead, quinine, ethambutol or demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica (a combination of optic neuritis and transverse myelitis). The condition is associated with pain behind the eyeball. When the under cause cause is removed or treated, the vision typically recovers, but some cases may lead to inflammation of the optic disc (papillitis) and optic atrophy.

Papilledema : This is swelling of the optic disc as seen through the ophthalmoscope. The margins of the disc are indistinct. The physiological cup is filled. The medical margin of the disc shows more marked changes. The veins are congested.

Causes : Increased intracranial tension, malignant hypertension, disease of the retinal arteries such as giant cell arteritis, retinal vein thrombosis, cavernous sinus thrombosis, hematological disorders like acute leukemia and plycythemia vera, emphysema and pre-eclamptic toxemia. Visual loss consistants of concentric reduction of the field of vision and enlargement of the blind spot.

Optic atrophy The Ophthalmoscopic appearance of optic atrophy consists of pallor of the optic disc, with a punched out appearance, prominence of the lamina cribrosa and narrowing of the arteries. Optic atrophy may be "primary" or "secondary" and the fundoscopic findings are distinct. In primary optical atrophy, no other lesions is detectable on funduscopy. the lamina cribrosa is less distinct .. The term "consonic optical atrophy" is used when the Optic atrophy results from retinal diseases.

Causes : All causes of retrobulbar neuritis may lead to optic atrophy as well. Other rarer causes include pressure on the optic nerve or optic chiasm, occlusion of the central retinal artery and injury to the optic nerve. Primary optical atrophy occurs in association with hereditary cerebellar ataxias, Oras an isolated abnormality. Optic atrophy leads to gross dimunition of vision, leading to total blindness.

Gadgets and Health

We all love our gadgets but do our gadgets love us? The news is full of reports about the links between health and gadgets. Parents are equipping their children with cell phones at youngger ages, and new laws are in place to make driving with cell phones safer. We thought we'd take a look at the current state of health and gadgets and came up with this assessment.

Cell Phones

Microwave radiation, thermal radiation, electro-magnetic fields, repetitive stress, and even psychological harm; the list of potential threats goes on and on. There is a lot of science being applied to studying the effects of gadgets on our health. At the same time there are also a lot of myths in circulation.

History is full of examples where health hazards like asbestos, cigarettes, and lead in paint went unrecognized or even intentionally suppressed. Many recent studies show no harmful effects from cell phone use however, some long terms studies have turned up disconcerting findings. And there are always that group of neurosurgeons who will not hold their phones next to their ears.

In either case there is enough doubt to warrant some caution. According to one recent report from the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, "Studies in humans do not indicate that cell phones are safe, nor do they yet clearly show that they are dangerous. But, growing evidence indicates that we should reduce exposures, while research continues on this important question. "

Real or perceived, cell phones represent potential threats for a number of reasons including:

Microwave Electromagnetic Radiation

A typical GSM cell phone can generate up to 2 watts of power at microwave frequencies. SAR (Specific Absorption Rates) values indicate how much radiation is absorbed by the body and is limited by government standards. Despite the fact that cell phone radiation is characterized as non-ionizing or too weak to damage genes, concern remains for thermal effects and blood-brain barrier leakage. Younger cell phone users could have been more vulnerable to adverse effects.

A 2007 Israeli study recently linked microwave radiation from frequent cell phone use (22 hours a month) to an increased risk of salivary gland cancer. The report, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology also notes that risk was higher in rural areas where cell phones transmit at higher levels to compensate for weaker signals.

Thumbs Down for Texting to Prevent RSI

One saving grace for young people using cell phones is that they typically spend more time texting than talking. The only problem is that thumbs, having evolved for gripping things, are not so well adapted for poking things and as a result many cell phone users are suffering from RSI (repetitive stress injury). Recent reports recommend texting with two thumbs at a time.

Cell Phone Elbow

From the same orthopedic specialists that greeted you carpal tunnel syndrome, we now have cubital tunnel syndrome. The ulnar nerve runs under the funny bone to your fingers. When this nerve gets stretched by cell phone users holding a phone up to their ear for long periods, it can become weakened. Blood supply to the nerve can also be affected. The result is pain.

Car Accidents

If it's not one thing like microwave radiation, it could be another thing like being distracted while driving and crashing your car. Many statistics now point to dramatic increases in traffic accidents from talking or texting while driving. Almost hands free devices do not help much.

Minimize Risks

  1. Talk and listen from a distance when possible; use the speaker phone or use hands-free devices (Bluetooth is good, wired headsets are best)
  2. Avoid "second hand," radiation; keep your distance from someone talking on their phone.
  3. Be aware of the radiation coming from your own cell phone and do not use it in close proxies to a child.
  4. Cell phones communicate to the carrier even when you're not using your phone. Put your phone on the desk when in the office, carry it in your purse, and do not sleep with it under your pillow
  5. In addition to distance, shorter duration of exposure can minimize risks. Be brief, limit your calls and use a landline if possible. Switch answers periodically or use text messages when possible.

Other Gadgets, Other Risks?

Cell phones are just one type of gadget that might represent a health risk. Some other potential harm could come from these:

  • MP3 players at high volume levels can damage your ears and cause hearing loss. MP3 players may interfere with pacemakers and we've heard that you can hurt your thumb from too much iPod "scrolling?"
  • Big flat panel TVs can be dangerous falling objects that have caused serious injuries to children.
  • There is concern that laptops can cause fertility problems in men from the heat t laptops generate on the lap (area).
  • We've seen some reports about laser printers emitting ultrafine particles from the toner that can damage your lungs and there are also ozone emissions from laser printers.

No Cause for Alarm

After all is said and done, are we going to stop using our cell phones – probably not. With a little caution especially for kids and cell phones and a little common sense about using gadgets, we do not see any reason not to go out and buy that new flat panel TV, smart phone, camcorder, or new laptop. In fact, Retrevo is just the place to learn what to buy, when to buy it, and where to get the best deal.

Stroke Warning Signs

If you have a history or high blood pressure or strokes in your family history, you need to know the stroke warning signs. Knowing the telltale signs of a stroke and getting medical help immediately can often reduce the damage and prevent death. Knowing the onset signs of a stroke can be a lifesaver in more ways than one.

What Happened to "Joe"?

For example, "Joe" is in his mid to late 40's. He has always been a hard worker on the job, fixes his own car-rather than take it to the mechanic, and is always willing to help a neighbor shovel out after a snow storm.

He is not overweight and appears to be in picture perfect health. But, something inside of "Joe" is a ticking time bomb, just waiting to go off. Taken entirely by surprise, he is found in the hallway of his home, obviously in distress. An ambulance is called. Because his health is so precarious, his is stabilized and sent to a larger hospital that is adequately prepared to supplement his care.

Knowing that high blood pressure, smoking, and high bad cholesterol are often the culprits helps potential stroke victims to monitor their health, quit bad habits, and seek the proper medical care necessary to reduce the chances of having a stroke.

So, if you have a family history of strokes or health concerns that could lead to a stroke, seek medical care and follow the advice given to prevent a stroke from occurring in the first place.

What is a Hypertensive Crisis?

A dangerous spike in blood pressure is known as a hypertensive crisis that can lead to a stroke. Extreme high pressure of (top number) 180 systolic and (bottom number)120 diastolic or higher will damage arteries and capillaries. They will become inflamed and leak fluid and/or blood, rendering the heart unable to effectively pump blood under this condition.

There are two types of hypertensive crisis. One is urgent and the other is an emergency. An urgent hypertensive crisis is when your blood pressure becomes dangerously high and your doctor doesn’t suspect any damage to your organs. Symptoms and signs of an urgent hypertensive crisis may include, but not be limited to, shortness of breath, severe anxiety, severe headache, nose bleed and elevated blood pressure.

An emergency hypertensive crisis occurs when pressure becomes dangerously elevated and causes damage to your organs. Life threatening complications as a result of an emergency hypertensive crisis such as pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs), heart attack, brain bleeding or swelling, stroke, aortic dissection (a tear in the heart’s main artery) and eclampsia (high blood pressure with seizures if you are pregnant can occur. If you experience a severe increase in blood pressure, seek immediate medical treatment immediately. Treatment may include hospitalization with oral or intravenous (IV) medications.

To diagnose a hypertensive emergency the health care provider might ask you several questions to understand your medical history. They will also ask you what medications you are taking including prescription, nonprescription medications, recreational drugs and herbal or dietary supplements; a history of other co-morbid conditions and prior cardiovascular or renal disease. Tests will also be conducted to monitor blood pressure and assess organ damage including blood pressure monitoring, blood and urine test and pressure monitoring. Early emergency room triage is top priority to identify those patients who may require more aggressive care in the emergency room. Once a hypertensive emergency has been established the first order of business is to bring the pressure down with intravenous blood pressure medication to prevent further organ damage. Any organ damage that has already occurred will be treated with the appropriate medication and therapies.

Most hypertensive urgencies and emergencies are preventable. They are often the result of inadequately treated or untreated stage I or II hypertension or non adherence to hypertensive therapy. Hypertension affects roughly 50 million people in the United States each year. Hypertensive crisis affects close to 500,000 Americans each year. Approximately 30% of adults are unaware of their hypertension and 40% of the people with hypertension are not receiving treatment. Of those treated up to 67% do not have their blood pressure controlled to less than 140/90.

Hypertension develops at an early age and is more common and severs in African Americans compared to age matched non Hispanic whites. Hypertensive crisis is more common in African Americans compared with other races. The lifetime hypertension risk is 86 to 90% in females and 81 to 83% in men.

The best way to avoid hypertension and hypertensive crisis is to manage your blood pressure through exercise, healthy eating and proper medications when prescribed.

Possible Side Effects of Slimming Tea

Slimming tea is an herbal product that includes approximately 25% tea. Perhaps, the manufacturers and marketers are trying to latch onto the benefits of other pure teas by creating a beverage that is said to stimulate weight loss.

However, these herbal concoctions are filled with laxatives. There is a time in everyone’s life when a laxative may be warranted. Use for weight loss is not one of those times. Among the possible side effects of the use or abuse of these brewed beverages are:

  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fainting
  • Chronic Constipation
  • Dehydration
  • GI Tract problems
  • And possibly death from extended abuse by those who suffer from anorexia or bulimia
  • These side effects may not manifest with occasional use or the first use. However, for some who have “delicate” systems, diarrhea and stomach cramps may occur after the first cup. It must be noted that there are times when the product is useful, especially if one is suffering from constipation. However, it must be further noted that extended use of laxatives in any form will make the body become dependent on them to stimulate the bodily functions. The end result may be that the very product one uses to override constipation may create a never ending cycle on dependency and necessity.

It goes without saying that pregnant women should not use the products during the nine months of pregnancy as there could be disastrous results.

Generally, nausea and vomiting follow more than the occasional use. Fainting and dehydration go hand in hand. Often these side effects follow repeated daily use. While death is not likely to be attributed to drinking a laxative filled product, it is understandable that extended use followed by vomiting, dehydration and fainting could eventually lead to death.

Of particular note, many anorexia nervosa sufferers and those who experience bulimia are more likely to suffer the dire consequences of taking, or drinking, these slimming products daily. The psychological dependence can lead to physical dependence and to death. While no one is suggesting that any of the products are directly responsible for death, the abuse of any weight loss product by someone with a weight related disease should be a consideration.

Perhaps, there is a place for these products in the cupboard, especially for those times when a laxative is needed. However, before using these products as a weight loss tool, one should be fully aware of the consequences that can arise from regular use or abuse.

Glaucoma and Eye Symptoms Caused by Prescriptions For Depression – When to Call Your Optometrist

Serotonin re uptake inhibitors are as common as aspirin today (and probably much safer). There category as selective serotonin re uptake inhibitors is a long winded way of saying it makes the molecule serotonin stay around longer and act on you brain instead of being recycled. This allows a prolonged action of serotonin, one of the feel good molecules used to treat depression and a variety of other conditions. The eye has numerous receptor sites where serotonin acts, though they are not well understood at this time. A number of other prescription drugs also fall in this category.

One thing they share in common is a tendency to mildly dilate the pupils. This is rarely a problem, but if you have been told you have "Narrow Angles" or are susceptible to angle closure glaucoma it can be a concern. Farsighted patients have smaller drainage angles for the fluid inside the eye to escape back into the general circulation. With age, the lens inside the eye grows and moves forward, further restricting the drainage channels. When you enter into a dark room or movie theater the pupil naturally dilates also. When diluted, the colored tissue known as the iris bunches up it's outside edges. This thickens right at the location where the fluid is supposed to drain out. In a normal eye there is plenty of extra space to compensate for this but eyes with narrow angles start to be blocked by the bunched up iris tissue. Occasionally, the drain can be completely blocked and since fluid is being produced in the eye the pressure skyrockets up.

Usually these results in an acute attack of a very painful, blurry red eye with nausea and headaches. Drugs like Prozac in a rare handy cases have been known to push this process over the edge and precipitate angle closure glaucoma attacks. While very illegally, if you have narrow angles you should be aware of this, since this form of glaucoma is curable with early treatment.

The other possibility from this category of drugs is a transient rise in eye pressure for several weeks (although some cases report drops in pressure). If you have just started Prozac or a similar drug and your eye pressure readings are a little high, discuss this with your optometrist and have the pressures retested in 2-3 weeks. There is usually a return to normal if it is a mild medication induced increase. A retest in a few weeks could save you money on unnecessary treatment and testing.

One of the anti convulse-ant drugs used to treat epilepsy, migraines and depression has also been documented to cause angle closure glaucoma in a small number of patients. This tend to occur in the first few months and there are not necessarily predisposing factors. If you start having eye symptoms shortly after starting one of these medications notify your doctors immediately. Finally, be happy that we have treatments that have such better safety profiles than the prior generation.

It’s the Ingredients That Help DermaWound Heal Chronic, Hard-To-Heal Wounds

There are over 5 million people in the United States that suffer from chronic, hard-to-heal wounds. We feel that number is way too high. We would like to offer information on a product that has been healing many of these wounds. DermaWound heals pressure sores, diabetic leg or foot ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, ischaemic ulcers to surgical incisions/wound dehiscence, decubitus ulcers, sickle-cell ulcers and the list goes on…

DermaWound has been on the market for over 17 years helping people heal. The key to DermaWound’s success is the ingredients. They use a patented/proprietary, all natural formulation. We have listed each ingredient and then, more importantly, what each of those ingredients do to aid in the healing of long-standing chronic wounds.

Poly-Saccharide Blend– Sugars have multiple types of healing properties that have contributed to their use in wound care by many diverse cultures over the millennia. Sugars are bacteriostatic, fungistatic and anti-infective, so they do not promote the growth of bacteria or fungus. In addition, the sugars used in DermaWound have an osmotic pressure gradient to them that will pull edema and exudates out of a wound, decreasing any inflammation, while increasing blood flow. Our special poly-saccharide blend is also important in our 12-24 hour odor control guarantee.

Iodine USP– Iodine is anti: fungal, bacterial, viral & microbial. It is a very good broad spectrum anti-infective. To date: no known microbe, virus or fungus has developed a resistance against this time tested-tincture of old-Iodine.

Poly-Mineral Blend– Primarily calcium and magnesium with 73 trace minerals. These are utilized as an external source of nutritional building blocks for the metabolism of the recovering wound bed. We have found our blend to be especially important in ramping up cellular activity and growth.

    Citric Acid– A natural preservative.

    Dibasic Sodium Phosphate– A stabilizer

    Glycerin– Smoothing agent.

Carrageenan– Increases adherence/tackiness of product to the wound surface.

Silica– Promotes wound healing. Absorbed by the body and used as fundamental building blocks in the formation of new tissues.

1-Octadecanol– An alcohol sugar – provides fundamental building blocks and energy for new tissue growth.

1-Hexadecanol – An alcohol sugar – provides fundamental building blocks and energy for new tissue growth.

Benzocaine USP – A topical anesthetic.

Purified Water– Provides a base to blend into a creamy consistency. Slightly alkaline – will contribute to wound healing.

No manufactured ingredients. All ingredients are 100% natural and ready to help your wounds heal.
