Introduction

Stroke in dogs is a condition that requires immediate veterinarian treatment. Once a stroke has been diagnosed the treatments will begin as soon as possible. Flu and the Immune System

Influenza ("flu") strikes every year and afflicts millions. Under normal circumstances, flu is not considered a general public health risk. Of course, any disease must be taken seriously for two reasons.

First of all, any disease, including flu, can become dangerous through complications.

But, let's also understand the far more important issue with regard to flu (and not just avian flu) … but disease in general. Every flu is a problem primarily because our immune system gets compromised through life's stresses. Put bluntly, flu is "caught" by people because their immune system is not functioning well.

Immune system dysfunction and weakening events from constant stress, constant threat of danger, constant deprivation of nutritional needs, and constant exposure to vicissitudes of life. Flu … even deadlier strains such as avian flu, can be the result.

Specifically, flu impacts us due to an under active immune system. This is true of many diseases such as cancer, Hepatitis B and C, TB, strep, shingles as well as flu. Other disease conditions are the result of an over active immune system.

What makes this an issue of late is the fact that only recently has science begun to understand the immune system, its complications, its sheer power to fend off disease conditions and its power to aid in the healing process.

Avian Flu and Pandemics of the Past

To understand the avian flu threat, we need to understand flu pandemics of the past. Flu epidemics have been explosive and unusually deadly. In past centuries, flu probably spread so fast due to humans and animals living in close proximacy.

As you probably know, avian flu is a complex disease mutated from flu that kills birds. But, avian flu has mutated successfully to strike human life. Close proximate of animal and human life allows for such mutations to develop and spread.

Flu can spread like wildfire. The pandemic flu of 1580 began in Asia, spreading over all continents in less than a year. The flu engulfed all of Europe in less than six months.

That's the problem with flu breakouts. Flu pandemics hit like the proverbial flash flood. A highly contagious flu virus can hit populations that have little or no specific antibody immunizations to the disease, infect a quarter of the population, outstrip societal response capability, disrupting societal health and economy.

The fear today is that avian flu will strike suddenly and will spread globally in a matter of mere months.

There were three flu pandemics of the 20th century. They are well documented as to origin, spread, and impact. Those flu pandemics occurred in 1918-19, 1957-58, and 1968-69.

The flu pandemic of 1918-19 killed upwards of 40 million people. No doubt, society did not have the tools nor understanding to stop the plague. However, if ever there was an argument for immune debilitation, it's war weariness.

Almost every author who writes about this flu pandemic notes the fact the world was at war. But, that was not a mere footnote. It was a major contributor to society's incapacity to restrain, much less stop the flu plague.

War brings unique circumstances, to say the least. War brings a strain to everything including the immunity capacity of the survivors. If flu occurs in compromised immune systems, war guarantees the stress and deprivation which is often the prelude to plague:

"soldiers live in horrid conditions and return to a disrupted life but the effect on their immune system follows them into peace time … and plague,

"loss of loved ones brings its stresses to the emotions which affects the immune system,

"constant anxiety for soldiers and loved ones even though they return safely, brings its emotional traumas and immune system depletion,

"loss of hygienic conditions weakens resistance and breeds viral and bacterial conditions,

"depression economy partnerships poverty and its consequences to human quality of life,

"uncertainty of safe living conditions (bombing, terrorism, battle, mob actions)

during war takes its own toll on the body

"disrupted economies, making recovery long, difficult and uncertain,

"work hours longer and work conditions harsher, pay less,

"crime, destruction, barbarism frightening or actual,

"whole economics perish, trade and commerce uncertain,

"political uncertainties,

"peace often brings more severe dislocation and hardship (this was especially the case after World War I)

"all populations suffer nutritional deprivation, with few exceptions

When flu strikes after such conditions, scientists often misjudge the fact that the victims, deemed "healthy", really were compromised through the war and peace time consequences. The generation, which was victimized by the "Spanish flu" of 1918-1919, was in the age range of 15 – 35 … the very age which includes:

"single parents,

"factory workers,

"teens called upon to assume unusual responsibilities on the home front

"workers in their prime, needed on all fronts …

"medical and other service personnel exposed to a constant need for their services,

Their "after the war" physical let down is almost reminiscent of what happens to people after particularly long periods of stress … They fall prey to flu, colds, and infection.

It is now known that after a heavy workout, whatever other benefits accrue to the body, there is one clear draw back. The oxidized radicals that formed take the body several days to get over … leaving the body open to radical damage and some internal harm. We all love our gadgets but do our gadgets love us? The news is full of reports about the links between health and gadgets. Parents are equipping their children with cell phones at youngger ages, and new laws are in place to make driving with cell phones safer. We thought we'd take a look at the current state of health and gadgets and came up with this assessment.

Cell Phones

Microwave radiation, thermal radiation, electro-magnetic fields, repetitive stress, and even psychological harm; the list of potential threats goes on and on. There is a lot of science being applied to studying the effects of gadgets on our health. At the same time there are also a lot of myths in circulation.

History is full of examples where health hazards like asbestos, cigarettes, and lead in paint went unrecognized or even intentionally suppressed. Many recent studies show no harmful effects from cell phone use however, some long terms studies have turned up disconcerting findings. And there are always that group of neurosurgeons who will not hold their phones next to their ears.

In either case there is enough doubt to warrant some caution. According to one recent report from the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, "Studies in humans do not indicate that cell phones are safe, nor do they yet clearly show that they are dangerous. But, growing evidence indicates that we should reduce exposures, while research continues on this important question. "

Real or perceived, cell phones represent potential threats for a number of reasons including:

Microwave Electromagnetic Radiation

A typical GSM cell phone can generate up to 2 watts of power at microwave frequencies. SAR (Specific Absorption Rates) values ​​indicate how much radiation is absorbed by the body and is limited by government standards. Despite the fact that cell phone radiation is characterized as non-ionizing or too weak to damage genes, concern remains for thermal effects and blood-brain barrier leakage. Younger cell phone users could have been more vulnerable to adverse effects.

From the same orthopedic specialists that greeted you carpal tunnel syndrome, we now have cubital tunnel syndrome. The ulnar nerve runs under the funny bone to your fingers. When this nerve gets stretched by cell phone users holding a phone up to their ear for long periods, it can become weakened. Blood supply to the nerve can also be affected. The result is pain.

Car Accidents

If it's not one thing like microwave radiation, it could be another thing like being distracted while driving and crashing your car. Many statistics now point to dramatic increases in traffic accidents from talking or texting while driving. Almost hands free devices do not help much.

Minimize Risks

  1. Talk and listen from a distance when possible; use the speaker phone or use hands-free devices (Bluetooth is good, wired headsets are best)
  2. Avoid "second hand," radiation; keep your distance from someone talking on their phone.
  3. Be aware of the radiation coming from your own cell phone and do not use it in close proxies to a child.
  4. Cell phones communicate to the carrier even when you're not using your phone. Put your phone on the desk when in the office, carry it in your purse, and do not sleep with it under your pillow
  5. In addition to distance, shorter duration of exposure can minimize risks. Be brief, limit your calls and use a landline if possible. Switch answers periodically or use text messages when possible.

Other Gadgets, Other Risks?

Cell phones are just one type of gadget that might represent a health risk. Some other potential harm could come from these:

  • MP3 players at high volume levels can damage your ears and cause hearing loss. MP3 players may interfere with pacemakers and we've heard that you can hurt your thumb from too much iPod "scrolling?"
  • Big flat panel TVs can be dangerous falling objects that have caused serious injuries to children.
  • There is concern that laptops can cause fertility problems in men from the heat t laptops generate on the lap (area).
  • We've seen some reports about laser printers emitting ultrafine particles from the toner that can damage your lungs and there are also ozone emissions from laser printers.

No Cause for Alarm

After all is said and done, are we going to stop using our cell phones – probably not. With a little caution especially for kids and cell phones and a little common sense about using gadgets, we do not see any reason not to go out and buy that new flat panel TV, smart phone, camcorder, or new laptop. What Are Compression Socks

Compression socks and compression stockings are hosiery items specifically designed to help with blood circulation. Glaucoma Identity Kit – What is It?

Glaucoma is a dreaded eye problem where the eyes can not drain properly and the patient becomes blind because of too much fluid pressure. There are many different types of glaucoma, but one of the most common is called congenital glaucoma. That means this kind of glaucoma is passed on through your genes. Would not it be great if some sort of glaucoma identity kit was devised to see if you or your children carried this particular gene before you started to go blind?

What Is Congenital Glaucoma?

Congenital glaucoma is a problem for young children, who often are educated to the doctor or ophthalmologist when it's too late. Although some children can be diagnosed as newborns, as many as 15% of babies with congenital glaucoma go undiagnosed, according to some studies done in America. When the symptoms develop, they often go blind in both eyes 75% of the time. For some unknown reason, boys are more affected than girls.

Discovery In 1997

The first step in developing such a glaucoma identity kit is discovering the specific gene that causes congenital glaucoma. Considering how many genes and gene combinations a person carries, it's easier to find a needle in a haystack. But in March of 1997, University of Connecticut Health Center's research scientist, Mansoor Sarfarazi, Ph. D, found the needle.

The studies were mostly funded by a company called InSite Vision, which was hoping to use the discovery of the gene to develop profitable glaucoma diagnostic tools. Unfortunately, these things take time. InSite, in cooperation with an Italian company, did plan to test a product called OcuGene in Italy in 2002. Its technical name was ISV-900. It Disappeared into Obscurity after 2003. In 2007, InSite Viiosn announced in court papers that "Our marketing and sales efforts related to OcuGene glaucoma genetic test have been significantly curtailed."

No glaucoma identity kit of any kind is currently listed in the company's products, not even for clinical development. It is unknown how long InSite will own the exclusive rights to the University of Connecticut Health Center's research to allow other companies the chance of developing a diagnostic kit.

Seeing Into The Future

The mention of ISV-900 probably makes anyone at InSite Vision shudder. There was a terrible court battle with those same Italian companies with a lot of the details being hushed. As of 2008, no medical supply company or pharmaceutical giant has been able to develop such a diagnostic tool so far. Despite the fact that there are a lot of children who get glaucoma, apparently not enough of them go blind or they are not from families rich enough to mount any kind of legal protest.

Perhaps in the future, pharmaceutical companies will concentrate on what's best for people's health rather than what's best for their shareholders.

What Is SMA?

Spinal Muscular Atrophy is more commonly known by the letters SMA. It is also sometimes referred to as autosomal recessive proximal spinal muscular atrophy but however you say it, it all means the same thing–that it is a rare neuromuscular disorder that affects many thousands of people throughout the world.

When life begins in the womb, all of us are given two sets of chromosomes. One from our mother, one from our father. This is our genetic code and if all goes well, we are born healthy. However, a lot can happen during gestation that affects pairs of chromosomes. Most of us are aware that having an extra copy of chromosome 21 for example leads to Down Syndrome. A mother and a father can both be carriers for spinal muscular atrophy and themselves would not be affected, but if both pass it via their chromosomes to their offspring, the baby has the disease. It is something that can occur along all races and in all the countries of the world; it does not discriminate.

So what is it? SMA is defined as a loss of motor neurons and it comes with progressive muscle wasting. What happens behind the scenes if you will is that there is a defect in the SMN1 gene which encodes SMN which is a protein necessary for the survival of the motor neurons. Proximal (arms and legs) and the lung muscles are usually the first to be affected by the disease with others following as it progresses. Some babies born with the disease are so weak that they die shortly after birth, others survive birth but have problems throughout their lives.

Areflexia which means below normal or absent reflexes, muscle weakness, poor muscle tone, loss of strength of respiratory muscles, weak cough, limpness, difficulty sucking and/or swallowing and poor feeding are all indicative of someone with spinal muscular atrophy. These people often have to use a wheelchair and have a lot of help doing things others take for granted. While their body may be weak, their brains usually are not, with most kids diagnosed with SMA being of above average intelligence.

Can this be cured? Well, there is some hope with a new drug that was approved by the FDA in December of 2016. It is called Nusinersen and it is taken by injection into the central nervous system. Clinical trials so far have been inspiring but there is still a wait time until the drug becomes widely available. With any luck, this is just what patients and children have been waiting for.

Mental dimension does not only include absence of mental illness. Good mental health is the ability to respond to various aspects of life of varying experiences with flexibility and a good sense of well understanding.

The Causes of Common Elbow Joint Pain

So many people suffer from elbow joint pain that most people do not even talk about it anymore. They just suffer through it, relating to the pain and stiffness that invades their lives every day. While some may agree that it is a strong person who can go through elbow joint pain and not complain, it the wiser group that agreements that you should have your joint pain treated.

If this occurs, you should immediately take the child to the doctor, where they will be able to set the arm properly.

The Infusion Pump Is Easily Taken for Granted

Let’s take a moment to sing the praises of the infusion pump. Yes, yes, it does seem like a rather mundane topic to get excited about. But consider our ability to feed, hydrate, and deliver medicines and solutions to the human body intravenously. Ponder for a second how great a step forward it was for mankind to develop the means to inject life-giving, life-preserving fluids into the blood stream.

A Brief History

The use of a syringe was first recorded during the time of the Romans by a gentleman named Celsus. Celsus wrote on many different subjects, but one of his works was a medical manual in which he tells of the use of a “piston” syringe to treat medical “complications.”

In 1650, French physicist Blaise Pascal invented the first “modern” syringe. He had been studying the principles surrounding the transmission of fluids using pressure, and from this came the syringe and a host of other inventions including hydraulics.

Intravenous (IV) infusion was first recorded as being attempted in the late 1400’s. But it wasn’t until the 1650’s where physicist Robert Boyle and architect Christopher Wren first started giving intravenous injections to animals. They had been experimenting with transfusions and IV infusion along with several other prominent physicians for a few years. One of those physicians was Richard Lower, who is said to have performed the first successful blood transfusion in around 1667. But Christopher Wren gets the historical credit for creating the first working IV infusion device in the late 1650’s.

Over the next 150 years-or-so, the process of IV infusion was slowly refined. Soon after the first transfusions were performed, they were banned in England, France, and Italy due to a number of deaths that resulted from them.

There were many failures with this early medical equipment, yet many discoveries and inventions were born out of those failures; the science of bacteriology, for instance. Better sterilization techniques and smaller, more effective needles were also generated during this period.

In the early 1830’s, Dr. Thomas Latta administered saline solution intravenously to Cholera patients on a large scale. He is said to have, for the most part, pioneered the process. Things only progressed from there, especially during the World War years which, out of necessity, spurred many advances in the delivery of blood and medicine through intravenous infusion. Needles and tubing were modified, and in the 1950’s, bottles were replaced with plastic bags.

The Infusion Pump

Another development in IV infusion technology was beginning to bubble up in the 1950’s. Interest was growing in the development of an “automated” bedside IV infusion system, mainly for use in operating rooms and intensive care units. The goal was to produce a machine or “pump” system that would automatically regulate the timing, volume, and dosage of medicines, fluids, and blood products administered to a patient.

A system like this would be much more efficient. It would save countless man-hours where nurses and doctors would not have to continuously give shots, personally administer IV’s, or do as much monitoring, and it would also allow great flexibility in the amount or volume of substance being delivered. These were just a few of the many advantages that the infusion pump offered.

The first infusion pump was developed and built by SigmaMotor, Inc., and the pumps started shipping in 1961. Due to a few early snags, the pumps were redesigned several times. But SigmaMotor (later just Sigma) built and sold thousands of units in the early-to-mid ’60’s, and a giant leap in medical technology and overall healthcare had begun to take hold.

The infusion pump has positively affected humanity in immeasurable ways. Countless medical supply companies, such as Alaris (Medsystem III), Baxter, Curlin, Hospira, and Smiths Medical, just to name a handful, carry IV supplies and a wide variety of infusion pumps, both new and refurbished.

Today, this mechanical “medical miracle” is a standard piece of equipment. Of course there have been many “offshoots” and variations to the infusion pump; the latest being portable and disposable devices… and the evolution continues.

What Are the Different Types of Wounds Responsible for Causing Tetanus?

Beside roadside injuries, tetanus may occur from various wounds caused by cuts, especially while working in fields / gardens, or when a deep punctured wound occurs in the case of mechanics engaged in various factories / workshops, etc. Tetanus may also manifest itself in patients with bed sores, or wounds caused by splints, or in cases of burns, skin ulcers or, following tooth extraction. It may be due to gunshot wound as well. A simple pinprick, injury by nail, thorn may also cause this problem. Fishermen may also suffer from it when they get an injury while handling the fish-hook. Frost-bite can also prove dangerous in some cases.

Tetanus may appear when injections or intravenous drips are given without proper sterilization. It is usually seen when drug addicts do not use properly sterilized needles / syringes.

The disease is known to occur when the wound is a tiny one, which can hardly be seen and is completely forgotten / healed. In such cases, the patient did suffer from an injury sometimes or the other.

Sometimes tetanus breaks out even in the wards of hospitals. It happens when the various materials used are not quite sterilized. As already mentioned, tetanus spores are highly resistant in nature, and require very high temperature for sterilization / autoclaving. Boiling. for at least 4-5 hours is required to eliminate these spores. In operation cases, tetanus spores get free from the unsterilized material, eg cat-gut, gauze, cotton, etc., the wounds caused by the operation serve as the ports of entry for tetanus spores, and their further germination into vegetative forms, which are responsible for the secretion of the toxin.

A pregnant woman may also become the victim of tetanus by a wound caused during labor / child-birth. It usually occurs when the woman has not been properly vaccinated against tetanus during her period of pregnancy.

Newborn babies may become infected, as a result of tetanus, when the cut ends of their umbilical cords, or any other injuries, they have suffered during their birth, have not been properly treated, with the result that such wound / s get infected by tetanus spores.

Tetanus may also develop in cases of ear discharge (otitis media), when the tetanus spores which may be present in the discharge of the ear, gain entry into the body through perforation / s in the ear-drum of these patients. Such cases are called 'otogenic tetanus'. This is of great importance, because such cases usually remain ignored till they get tetanus. This calls for energetic treatment of the continuing disease of the ear, as well as urgent vaccination against tetanus usually, these cases have not been vaccinated for tetanus earlier. Cases of otogenic tetanus are not uncommon. The author discussed such cases in one of the issues of Current Medical Practice. The disease is more common among children, and the parents should have the requisite awareness about this disease.

Myoskeletal Alignment and Nerve Pain

Manual therapists often blame nerve root pressure for pain arising from spinal misalignment. Pinched nerves are commonly targeted as the reason for unexplained neck and back pain. For years, bodyworkers have blamed nerve root compression for pain due to spinal misalignment. However, today most of the medical community disregard the “pinched-nerve theory” because of an absence of neurological signs such as paresthesias, tingling, numbness, motor loss, etc.

Some researchers dismiss the nerve root as a pain sensitive structure. Most do agree that pinched nerves can occur in extreme cases of trauma, muscle entrapments, and chronic degenerative disc disease. To experience nerve entrapment… lie on your side, place an arm above your head, and rest on that arm for a few minutes. The arm will eventually lose sensation as the nerve is stretched and compressed. This is an example of ‘pinching’ of a nerve.

There is a catch (no pun intended). Severe compression of a ‘healthy’ nerve may cause paresthesias, motor loss, sensory deficits, and loss of normal reflexes…but pain is absent. On the other hand, if the compression continues and the nerve’s dural sheath is rubbed raw, becomes inflamed (intraneural edema) and then compressed…pain will be present. This “silent nerve root compression syndrome” was first hypothesized by James E. Wilberger, MD in the Journal of Neurosurgery. His research suggests that time is required before functional alterations create mechanical nerve fiber deformation and accompanying pain.

How’s it work? Compression on an inflamed sensory nerve or its surrounding capillary beds over a length of time can cause the brain to experience pain (nociception). The pressure on the tethered nerve causes muscle cell contraction which leads to altered firing order patterns, protective spasm, faulty posture, wasted energy, and pain. However, it is rare for extended pain to exist as a result of nerve compression.

Pain caused by oxygen deprivation of the sensitive nerve tissues is a far more typical occurrence. This harmless and reversible condition can be extremely painful. Chronic back pain is most commonly blamed on pathologies such as herniated discs, bone spurs, etc., The pain often results from mechanical strain on joint related tissues such as spinal ligaments, joint capsules and muscles.

Here’s the good news. There is a form of manual therapy that can effectively treat both types of problems; the reduction in nerve function (tingling and numbness) as seen in piriformis and thoracic outlet syndromes, and also pain due to nerve fiber irritation. The objective of Myoskeletal Alignment(R) is to improve joint mechanics in the affected area to allow healing of the joint and surrounding soft tissues.

In Myoskeletal Therapy, the joint is held in a specific position with one hand and the surrounding soft tissues are stretched with the other. The client/patient isometrically contracts to a count of 5 and relaxes as resistance is met. This isometric muscle contraction is followed by a pin-and-stretch articular mobilization which releases motion-fixated joints. This very effective manual therapy technique often alleviates pain immediately once the abnormal joint position is corrected. This allows better movement with less nerve pain.

There will always be a certain amount of discussion over what symptoms qualify to be called a pinched nerve. Many nerve compression experts will continue believing that neurological tissue can be only be compressed by bone. Others maintain that a herniated disc and osteoarthritis are the primary culprits leading to a weak nerve signal.
