State Of Environmental Health In Uganda – A Community Psychologist's Perspective

Health and environment are linked. In fact, most people prefer using the phrase environmental health to have the union of the two. The union intends to show how influences of human health could come from changes in the environment.

But, within environmental health, there are other issues, like poverty, population, organic farming, environmental politics, environmental health accounting, environmental health protection and environmental stress (from humans and climatic changes). In other words, it would simply mean external factors that potentially affect health.

The environmental health continues to be under serious threat from; ever increasing population that encroach it, lack of concern from both communities and their leaders, multinational firms' scaling up of pesticide and chemical use in agriculture, and degradation of the environment -without moral conscience.

Use of chemicals is said to be highly destructive not only to weeds and pests but also to humans. Apart from losing the natural taste of food, eating food crops sprayed with chemicals, even after several hours of cooking, could soon have it set in vital organs of the body -as lungs and liver. And thereafter, lifespan of humans and animals could be lowered.

Unfortunately, suppliers of such destructive drugs are big corporate firms -that are capable of bribing off influential African leaders, employing huge numbers of people and investing heavily in advertisements. As such, it would be so easy to shut people's mouths -majority of who are beneficiaries, not to complain or advocate otherwise.

Yet, just looking at organic farming, which uses natural solutions to agricultural problems, it is something that is environmentally friendly-meaning that whatever constituent of the environment is not harmed. Rather, people practicing it co-exist with an understanding of the knowledge of sustainability in resource utilization.

Communities, in this case, are mindful of paying back to the environment from which they find food -with no pollutants, and ensuring that natural resources regenerate. There is, therefore, mutual benefit, unlike in scenarios -where use of pesticides, bush-burning and huge de-forestation for arable land is the mentality. Organic products are natural and in line with the similar natural needs of the body.

And products are what consumers could be willing to pay more for in order to safeguard life. The practice of farming is itself gentle to the earth – where both compliment each other in terms of soil conservation, conservation of vegetative cover and ensuring sustainability.

Pressure on land has forced many to migrate into game and forest reserves, and thus, catapulting into aggravated de-forestation, and extinction of rare species of both animals and plants. In south west Busoga forest reserve, in Mayuge District, it is now history that there used to be buffalos and hippopotamuses in the area.

It is a place with most violent panga-yielding encroachers ever known in Uganda. They can go as far as attacking tree-planters, cutting down artificial plantation, and even uprooting of newly planted trees.

Such grave environment degradation is what in turn adds to the already existing threat of global warming, adverse affecting ecological balances, leading to natural punishments (natural disasters), and creating conditions for disease causing germs as well as immunological disturbances.

Encroachment is a key critical issue, but governments in Africa are passive about dealing with the problem. Instead, they focus more on political goals. Politics is usually mixed with serious environmental health concerns. In Uganda, the problem, mainly, is with the forest resource.

For wild life, it is well able to quell off encroachers -according to reports by forest officials in Uganda. There is a kind of discrimination in regard to forest land protection, as would be compared to resources like oil and wild life.

With many of them being immigrants from other regions of the Uganda, the reason they (encroachers) give is lack of land for food production, where denial of forest or animal park land would mean starvation to death. In fighting to live, they are willing to be shot down.
But independent observers say encroachers are runaway criminals, who ended up in forests. And those in the forest think justice can hardly be processed to the very end, which gives them a feeling of personal safety.

The passage of local leaders has not generated action against encroachers-since they are voters capable of helping regimes in Africa stay in power. Governments, therefore, find it a delicate issue to handle. Instead, they choose to keep a blind eye as the environment is massively degraded.

While family planning would be an excellent strategy to combat growing population, the conservative lives of most Africans do not give room to the practice. Education too is out of reach for the majority of the populations around game and forest reserves -realizing that such areas tend to be remote.

The remoteness implications total absence of schools as much as the value of education. Yet, In line with education, going to school is said to discourage high birth rate and living without planning for the future. Some areas like Mayuge District have mainly junior level schools and parents value less the idea of ​​sending children to school.

Parents think educating children is a waste of money, and that in the first place, it is hard to get. While at the same time their forest life is unpredictable -since they believe government would at one time expel them. So, surviving day by day is all they look at. Neverheadless, older men would always be on the look out for breastfeeding-pointing young girls to devour sexually. As a Consequence, many drop out before joining secondary schools.

There is public health concerns in the face of high population growth -with pressure on utilities and irresponsible behavior in handling of community resources. People in such areas, as game and forest reserves -hardly care about hygiene and sanitation. Instead, the reserves act toilets or latrines.

And because they lack clean water, they frequently "host" water-borne diseases. Worse still, inaccessibility to reproductive health services makes them prey to HIVAIDS and other STIs / STDs. Where would you find condoms while in such areas?

The implications here are; improper disposal of waste materials, early sexual intercourse and rural prostitution around town centers. Further, in such areas, sexual intercourse is like taking a cup of tea -this time round, in Western Europe context, where anytime is believed to be tea time.

Besides, lack of proper nutrition, lack of well trained personnel, and engineered lack of drugs put local residences more at the risk of dying from the mainly water-borne, sexually transmitted infections and other simple infections -that else would be treated.

Since health services are inaccessible, local residents resort to traditional medicine. Rarely would you walk in rural areas without meeting a kind of "Dr" Rashid Lukwago clinic that fill gaps where modern medicine has failed to reach. However, with integrated health service delivery system, traditional medicine and modern are one, although standards need to be set for the former.

Useless cultures could have adverse connections to almost everything in life -be it with health service promotion, proper agricultural practices and viable leadership or managerial options. All could suffer under wrong mentalities.

More so, as the saying goes, "educate a woman, educate the nation." The saying, just as from; different research findings on gender, experiences and the statistical occurrence of child abuse and neglect cases, educated men would tend to act more irresponsibly on matters of child development than educated women.

There could be a difference between good orderliness of a family of an educated mother and one -who is uneducated. Education, which is understandably, the high intellectual state and tangible resourcefulness of a person-long after he or she has left school, could help scale down incidences of child abuse and neglect.

Upon this background, prospective parents must go or return to school not just to attend classes, but to learn. Having done so, the future could have environmentally caring and patriotic generation.

One just never knows when they're going to be aware of a new development, so their muscles have to be primed and ready to go.

How an EMS system works

EMS systems involve having more than one electrode placed on the skin. From there, small electronic pulses are emitted, usually by the push of a button. These pulses cause the muscles to contract. The contracting is similar to what is received when exercising. This is the very contraction that is needed to keep the muscles stimulated. It is true that an EMS system can not be connected all of the time, but it is great to have that available at a certain point or at points during the day to make sure the muscles get that bit of "exercise" that they need .

As for the effectiveness, EMS systems are quite effective, which is why so many individuals own them for various different reasons. As stated before, bodybuilders own them to help them in their bodybuilding routines. There are even some who use them to relieve muscle pain. The best way to relieve pain is by stimulating the muscle so that it can heal. If you've ever heard the saying, "Work it out," then you understand how an EMS system can do this. These are all reasons why doctors prescribe them to be used for those with such conditions as Muscular Dystrophy, for paraplegics, and for those who have encountered severe injuries that have resolved in severe muscle damage.

Luckily, EMS systems are not incredibly high investment. Many individuals are able to afford them and every individual can invest in the device that fits their particular needs. Certain ones give off a certain voltage, are different colors, different sizes, come with more or less electrodes, etc. Some may come with one type of electrode while others come with electrodes specifically designed for different areas of the body. But again, they are not very expensive, making EMS systems an easily accessible treatment method for anyone. Anyone with a muscle disorder or injury should invest in an EMS device to improve the quality of their life and to keep up a healthy appearance.

Does Stuttering Have Something to Do With Intelligence?

Does stuttering have something to do with intelligence? This is one of the most ellogical questions occupying the minds of most of the non-stutterers. And the answer to such a question is a definite no. Stuttering is only a speech hindering disorder which causes the sufferers to stammer when they speak. Being a speech disorder, stuttering has no connection whatsever to intelligence and intellect. Although some may argue that the neural patterns of stutterers differ from those of non-stutterers, the neurons are responsible for hearing and speech are in no way related to the neurons liable for intelligence.

The notion of comparing stuttering to intelligence is in itself erroneous because the intelligence of a person is measured through the IQ or Intelligence Quotient. The IQ of a person depends large on the ability of a person to help new things and learn stuff quickly. But the neurons responsible for determining one's IQ is present in the frontal cortex whereas the ones responsible for hearing and speech are present at the posterior and this clearly shows that one can in no way affect the other.

Although scientifically there is no connection between intelligence and stuttering, the intelligence of a stuttering individual can deteriorate because of the problem. This is largely based on how the stuttering kids were treated in their surroundings. Stutterers are generally made fun of and are never given a chance to show their prowess. Although the society considers them to be disabled in a way, it denies them the compassion which is usually shown towards disabled people. Where concessions are made for other disabled, the stutterers are either given the concessions nor are they treated with concern and even worse are the taunts pointed at them.

Even though some stutterers have been able to successfully overtake the taunts and displayed their intelligence, they have not been able to showcase their abilities because of the society's indifference to them. On top of that, the society has created a view around them depicting them as a dull lot, giving the world an impression that they are not as intelligent as other people. But one proving point to show that there can be no link between stuttering and intelligence is the number of famous successful people including Sir Winston Churchill, King George VI, etc., who have provoked their astuteness in spite of their stutter.

What Are Short Sightedness and Long Sightedness – How to Correct Them

Short sightedness is also called nearsightedness or Myopia is a common vision problem when the eyes can focus on close objects but distant objects are blurry. Long sightedness, also call far sightedness or Hyperopia is the opposite of Myopia. The eyes can focus on distant objects but not on close objects.

These vision problems are very common, about 30 percent of Americans are nearsighted and 60 percent are farsighted to some degree.

The shortsighted eyeball is too long causing the image focused in front of the retina. The symptoms of nearsightedness are blurred vision but also eye strain and sometimes headache.

The causes of nearsightedness are partly genetic and partly environmental. A person who constantly does close work could end up with Myopia. You can be diagnosed with nearsightedness at any age even after age 40.

The farsighted eyeball is too short causing the image focused behind the retina. Again the result is blurred image.

Genetic factors play a role at developing long sightedness. If the farsighted eye is not corrected it can get worse. It is possible that one eye nearsighted one eye farsighted.

Myopia and Hyperopia can be combined with other eyesight problems especially with Astigmatism. The causes of Astigmatism are irregular shaped cornea or irregular shaped lens causing an out-of-focus vision.

Narsightedness and farsightedness can be corrected different ways. One solution is eyeglasses. Another solution is contact lenses. Glasses and contact lenses are not going to make your eyes better they just help the eyes to focus on the retina. Eye surgery is another possibility. With eye surgery there are some risks involved.

You can also correct your vision and actually improve your vision with eye exercises. There are nearsighted eye exercises and farsighted eye exercises. Eye exercises can help Astigmatism too.

Are You at Risk to Be Buried Alive?

As we sit on our sofa and watch the evening news on the television we sadly view all the destruction that has transpired in Oklahoma. Watching with intent eyes we begin to ponder the possible purchase of a safe room or storm shelter. After witnessing all the horrid deaths which have taken place we go to the internet and beginning researching these safe areas that can be built into your homestead. Naturally, our hearts go out to these families who have lost loved ones in this disaster although you may be thinking along the lines of getting either a safe room or a storm shelter. In our way of thinking we would consider this as an emergency insurance policy and in many ways we would be right in viewing it as such. We continuously see the rescue efforts from the personnel attempting to free the people from the ruble of the tornado aftermath and questions start to come to mind.

What we are not seeing are the tales relating to those people who had the foresight to purchase and install a safe room within their home prior to a disaster. Are they as safe as we may initially think? We find stories originating from Moore Oklahoma that people are now being rescued form their safe rooms or storm shelters at alarming rates. These people are essentially trapped in their shelters from all the scattered debris. In short, they are buried alive.

This certainly appears to be quite a predicament since they were responsible enough to research, invest and build their safe room or shelter. They equally made proper plans for the safety of their family in the event of an emergency such as this only to discover that they would become victims of their own endeavors.

Are we advocating the elimination of safe rooms or emergency storm shelters? Not a chance however we are suggesting a few additional survival tools being included in your preps. My family and I had encountered tornado weather when we were stationed in New Mexico, Nebraska and Kansas and if I had a choice I would have constructed either a safe room inside the basement of our home or a storm Shelter close by. I can recall being notified of approaching tornados and every eye in the neighborhood appeared to be aimed skyward as we all watched for this dreadful weather phenomenon. I know first hand at the dangers posed by tornadoes so I would never recommend the elimination of safe rooms though it would not hurt in the least to include a pick ax and sometimes a hydraulic tool kit and make sure that you know how to use these items in the event of an emergency.

While we fully understand that it is nearly impossible to completely safeguard our family and self from the destructive nature of a tornado there are some things an individual can accomplish to increase the likelihood of survival. First they can build that safe room or storm shelter we spoke earlier but before we proceed to far into our discussion let's briefly differentiate between a safe room and a storm shelter.

Although the terms are generally used synonymously they are not the same.
Typically, the safe room is located above ground and usually within the perimeter of the home. It is fortified so that in the event of an emergency people can enter the room and remain safe. This has the advantage of keeping them safe during a natural disaster or during an attempted home break in. During a tornado a safe room can add a bit of protection but is not the ideal conditions.

A safe room should have a means by which the occupants can communicate with the outside world such as a cell phone or land line. Usually, it will be equipped with a well stocked first aid kit, a flashlight, several blankets and a supply of packaged foods. If you are like me you will also want to keep several gas masks and a portable toilet on hand. A safe room built to proper code can to a degree withstand severe weather much better than the average home would. By knowing where you should build your safe room it can help you provide the most protection possible. You may wish to consider your basement, a first-floor room or in your garage.

As stated, a fortified safe room will provide a certain measure of protection which is missing from the usual home. You are much closer to your area of ​​safety than if you had to travel to a public shelter and you will likely feel better psychologically in your own room. The major disadvantage is that since your safe room is located above-ground they are simply not viewed to be as safe as an underground option.

Storm shelters on the other hand are different from the safe rooms in several ways.

They are built underground and not within the confines of a person's home. A storm shelter is designed specifically to keep the occupants safe during any sort of inclement weather and especially when confronted with tornadoes. We find that storm Shelters are built for single family use and are generally close enough to the home so that one can quickly gain access to it however it is also far enough away that in the event of a collapsed home, the escape door would not be cover up with debris. Storm shelters should be stocked with drinking water, packaged foods, first-aid kits and a means of communication in case you need to call for help. Being built under ground the storm shelter is considered safer than a safe room which is above-ground.

The downfalls of a storm shelter are the initial cost involved. It is usually very expensive to have one built and installed. Since it is a separate building from the family's usual home the individuals must leave the home to enter the shelter. In some cases this can be dangerous for the family if done at the very last minute.

There are several items of interest that must be taken into consideration when you employ safe rooms and storm Shelters. First and high on our list is the possibility that you can become trapped in your room or shelter from the various debris which has fallen. This rubbish could prevent you from leaving your sanctuary when it is safe to.

Secondly, and just as dangerous is the thought that during an adverse condition you stand a very good chance that you may drown in your safe location as a result of a broken water main. Combine both of these possibilities together and they can spell a dangerous situation. What this is telling us is that when planning your safe room or shelter it is advantageous to use care and good sense in its construction as well as its planning.

We have already determined that the storm Shelter is superior over the safe room so if money is the primary obstacle you might wish to consider something similar to the old time root cellars from days past. Build it away from trees and other structures that could trap you in it. Maintain multiple means by which you could egress the location so that if one exit is blocked you could escape by way of the second. Above all do not forget that even though you have stocked up on food, water and various medical supplies you should also have in your tool kit a chainsaw and some sort of hydraulic lift kit to help you get out if trapped inside.

We as preppers may develop a new interest in these types of safe rooms and Shelters as a result of the disaster but we also will need to develop a good construction plan which would keep us out of arms way when the inevitable hits.

Say and Display!

There are many different ways of greeting that obviously also convey different messages. Here in Africa some people show respect by touching their right hand with their left hand when they shake your hand. When someone does this while greeting me, it gives me a good feeling inside and I thank that person warmly for the beautiful gesture.

I like to hug people, because it shows them a piece of your heart. You show that you really care. Life is so empty and we really need to show we care, especially when we greet one another.

In his book, God praat Afrikaans, Hemelbesem explains how important greeting is in his culture (my translation):

When coloured people greet one another, it’s a looong business. It’s probably true in other cultures as well, but it’s definitely something about my people that I appreciate. Nearly all your senses become part of the greeting.

Obviously, you greet with words, but it’s as if words are not enough. It must be said and done. Say it and display it! Touching is so important for one’s existence. We share a kind of energy when we touch one another.

Wow, well said and so true. We say, “hallo” to others, ask how they are, and often don’t listen to their response. But when you greet with feeling and touching, you sort of enter into that person’s personal bubble. Where it is safe to be honest and mumble more than the usual stopgap phrase: “All good, and you?”.

For us as Christians a proper greeting is a must. Even Paul recommended it: 26Greet all the followers of Jesus there with a holy embrace.

We must greet one another warmly, i.e. whole-heartedly, with feeling, and with caring. When Christians greet one another, we wish each other spiritual and eternal peace. We know where we’re going and we confirm it in our greeting. In a way, we then also show the world that we care and are sincerely interested in one another’s wellbeing.

When we greet, we also have to bless. It’s more than good wishes and in effect a prayer that Jesus’ grace will be with that person everywhere. Therefore, I now pray with Paul for you too: May 28The amazing grace of Jesus Christ be with you!

May you spread that same greeting and blessing everywhere you go. May people be different because you touched their lives.

Stuttering – How to Stop Stuttering Using Self Hypnosis

The quest to stop stuttering is great for many people who stammer or stutter. There are some underlying reasons that make self-hypnosis an effective choice in your anti-stutter approach. You can quit your stutter habit when you put your mind to it.

Causes of Stuttering

If you want to stop stammering when you speak, it helps to look at the possible causes of the condition. Unfortunately, researchers have been unable to determine an exact cause for the condition. There is some evidence that there could be a genetic factor to consider.

You may be genetically speaking to stutter but this does not mean that the problem has to get out of control. You can consider other possible factors that can be controlled with self-hypnosis to help you stop stuttering.

Developing Language

Developmental stutters occur when young children are learning how to speak. Most children grow out of as they mature out of this temporary period. However, some have difficulty growing out of this phase. Self-hypnosis can help if you consider how the developmental stuttering works.

The child's mouth can not keep up with his thoughts and he can not stop stuttering. This can continue into adulthood. You may have thoughts that are stepping a few beats ahead of your ability to articulate them. You can take control of your thoughts through self-hypnosis.

Organizing Thought Processes

Sometimes your brain is so filled with thoughts and ideas that it becomes difficult to articulate them. The thought pattern in your mind is hurried and your articulation skills simply can not keep up with your ideas. If you think about it, the process of articulation is very complex.

Self-hypnosis can help you organize your thoughts processes in order to make articulation easier. This approach is very effective because you are entering it through the subconscious mind. Once your thoughts are organized and calmed, you are better able to put your ideas into words.

Neurogenic Stutter Problems

In some cases, the person who stutters has signal problems between the muscles and nerves that control speech and the brain. The muscles used to form language do not work properly. Some postulate that this is de to lesions or abnormalities in the speech and motor region of the brain.

Stop Stuttering with Self-Hypnosis

Your stammer can get worse when you have feelings of anxietyiness. It can also increase when you feel stressed, fatigued, excited or self-conscious. Self-hypnosis can effectively treat these underlying problems as you work through your stutter. When you are calm and relaxed, you are better able to articulate.

You may be able to articulate well when you sing or when you are talking to yourself. This indicates that you have great control over your speech patterns. Self-hypnosis can help you develop an approach to speaking that puts you in the frame of mind you are in when you are calm and alone or when you are singing.

You can take focus away from what you are trying to say conceptually, and focus on articulating words. The ability to stop stuttering is available in the resources of your mind.

Cold And Flu

The common cold and flu (influenza) are very common infections of the upper respiratory tract (nose, throat, ears and sinuses).

What causes them?

Colds and flu are caused by viruses. The infections are contagious, passed on by tiny droplets and hand contact.

There are hundreds of different types of virus that can cause a cold, which explains why children get repeated colds.

Complications:

* Acute ear infection (otitis media). A frequent complication of common colds in children, ear infection occurs when bacteria

yellow discharge from the nose or the return of a fever following a common cold. Children who are too young to verbalize their

distress may simply cry or sleep restlessly. Ear pulling is not a reliable sign.

* Wheezing. A cold can trigger wheezing in children with asthma.

* Sinusitis. In adults or children, a common cold that doesn’t resolve may lead to sinusitis – inflammation and infection of the sinuses.

* Other secondary infections. These include strep throat (streptococcal pharyngitis), pneumonia, bronchitis in adults and croup in children. These infections need to be treated by a doctor.

Danger signs

* Colds associated with very high temperature, severe pain or shortness of breath. Contact GP.

Common Cold Treatment: An Introduction

It seems like every day a new common cold treatment is being marketed to prevent, cure, or shorten the length of the common cold

(see Common Cold Myths). Despite these marketing claims, there is only one cure for the common cold — time. Therefore, common cold

treatment goals are focused on providing relief from common cold symptoms as the body fights the cold virus.

Common cold treatment options include:

* Resting in bed

* Drinking plenty of fluids

* Gargling with warm salt water (or using throat sprays or lozenges)

* Using a cool-mist humidifier

* Taking common cold medicine.

Common cold Prevention

No effective vaccine has been developed for the common cold, which can be caused by many different viruses. But you can take some

common-sense precautions to slow the spread of cold viruses:

* Wash your hands.

* Scrub your stuff.

Nursing Rabbits: How To Care For A Sick Rabbit

A sick rabbit should only be nursed at home by veterinary instruction ie if your rabbit is sick, always see a vet first and foremost. There are several circumstances in which your vet may ask you to nurse your rabbit at home rather than keeping it at the vet's surgery. For example, if your rabbit has had an operation, most commonly neutering or spaying, or is suffering from a long term illness such as Pasteurella or E.Cuniculi.

Environment

Sick rabbits should always be kept in a warm, draughts free environment. If you have an outdoor rabbit, you will need to bring it indoors so you can keep it warm and supervise it properly. Set up an indoor cage with some blankets and a litter tray in it and make sure there is always clean, fresh water available.

For house rabbits (no cage), you can let them go to their usual den or sleeping area but make sure it is comfortable, clean and they have fresh water close by.

Medication

Rabbit medicines commonly given at home such as Metacam, Baytril, Panacur and Fibreplex are administrated orally so it is important that you know how to syringe feed your rabbit (see below).

Syringe feeding

Whatever illness your rabbit has, the most common output is that your rabbit is unwilling to eat. Rabbits have very sensitive digestive systems and any kind of pain is likely to affect their eating habits first. It is very important to keep their digestive system moving to avoid the risk of gut stasis and rabbits who are not eating need to be syringe fed every couple of hours.

Recovery Food or Critical Care is available from vets, some pet stores and online retailers. It comes in saaches and needs to be mixed with a little water to form a paste. This is then fed to the rabbit with a small syringe (again, available from vets or retailers); about 2 to 3 syringe-fulls every 2 hours.

Settle your rabbit on a non-slippery surface on a table – it sometimes helps to wrap them in a blanket. Place the rabbit facing away from you with its bottom against your tummy. Hold the rabbit's head gently but firmly with one hand while you insert the syringe into its mouth. If the rabbit clenches its teeth, move the syringe round until you find the gap at the side of its mouth and wiggle it in gently. Depress the syringe slowly – this is critical so the rabbit has time to swallow as otherwise there is a risk the rabbit will inhale the food and choke. Hold the rabbit until you are sure the food has been swallowed as many rabbits hold it in their mouth then spit it out. If the rabbit spits any food out onto its chest, wipe it away – for rabbits with large dewlaps it helps to tuck a napkin or tissue over the dewlap.

Syringe feeding can be tricky and takes practice so it is advisable to ask your veterinary nurse to demonstrate first and to have two people present the first time you try it.

Cleaning / bathing

Rabbits are normally very clean and groom themselves from head to toe several times a day. A sick rabbit, however, may be unable or unwilling to do this and this can lead to skin problems if the rabbit is not kept clean. Full rabbit baths should be avoided whenever possible but if your rabbit has poo stuck around its bottom you can give it a bottom bath. Put a few inches of warm water in a sink and gently lower your rabbit's bottom into it. Loosen the poo from its fur with gentle rubbing – you can use a pet or baby shampoo if necessary. Dry the rabbit thoroughly with a towel and put it by a radiator or other warm place until its fur is completely dry.

If your rabbit's chin (dewlap) is dirty from dribbled food wipe this clean with a soft damp cloth, otherwise the skin can become irritated and sore.

Nursing a rabbit at home is time consuming and can be stressful, particularly syringe feeding, but the rabbit will generally do better in its own environment away from the stresses of a vet surgery. However, it can be difficult – particularly with more obstacle rabbits – so if you are in any doubt about whether you can manage it ask your vet to care for the rabbit instead.

Sciatica and Piriformis Syndrome

One of the more common shortcomings seen in chiropractic offices around the country is sciatica. Those of us unlucky enough to have deal with this injury in the past fully understand how painful it can be and how much havoc it can cause in your life. Sciatica has a lot of fancy names like sciatic neuralgia, sciatic neuritis, and lumbo-sacral radiculitis but no matter what you call it it is defined by pain in the buttock and leg. If you break down its fancy names you will see that it results from the inflammation of the sciatic nerve. This inflammation can be the result of direct trauma, compression, or reduced blood flow (ischemia) to the sciatic nerve. Compression of the sciatic nerve, the most common cause that I see in my office, generally occurs either at the spell where the nerve exits the spinal column or somewhere along the nerve as it descends the leg. Compression at the spinal is usually the direct result of a disc herniation, bulging disc, foreign body, or the narrowing of the canal that it exits the spinal through, which is called stenosis. Stenosis usually occurs because of arthritis, disc degeneration, bone spurs, or abnormal growth of ligament or bone called hyperplasia. It is also important to note that a very common cause of ischemia to the sciatic nerve is by direct compression by a bulky wallet in the back pocket of your pants so make sure to get that wallet out of there while driving or sitting for long periods. I can not even count how many cases I have resolved by that simple change. Now, when it comes down to peripheral nerve entrapment, the most common structure to compress the sciatic nerve is the piriformis muscle. This small muscle that runs across the top of the buttock from the pelvis to the side of the hip can go into spasm and compress the sciatic nerve, causing sciatica. The sciatic nerve passes directly under the piriformis muscle and in 12% of the population it actually pierces through the middle of the muscle. This specific form of sciatica is called piriformis syndrome and in this article I will discuss its presentation, causes, and treatments.

Sciatic nerve neuritis caused by the contracture of the piriformis is one of the most common peripheral nerve entrapments in the body and is also one of the most misdiagnosed entrapments as well. Many doctors just assume that cases of sciatica are caused by disc bulges and herniation and order MRI's to diagnose the condition. These same doctors are confused when the MRI shows no sign of arthritis or disc displacement. EMG tests will have mixed results but for the most part the lower gluteal and lower limb muscles will be abnormal but the large paraspinal muscles in the lower back will be normal, as will the TFL. Piriformis syndrome will have many signs and symptoms in common with traditional sciatica including pain down the buttock and lateral leg, numbness, pain with forward bending, leg fatigue, and reduced range of motion in the low back and leg. Both with have positive orthopedic tests like the Straight Leg Raise Test. Valsalva Test will be negative if there is no disc involvement but remember that piriformis syndrome can coexist with a disc injury. The piriformis muscle's normal action is to externally rotate the leg which means it opens the foot outward as if you were going to kick a soccer ball with the instep of your foot. With that in mind, signs that the piriformis muscle is contracted include one-sided toeing out while standing or walking, increased pain with internal rotation of the leg, and pain with stretching the piriformis muscle. The way to isolate and stretch the piriformis muscle is to sit in a chair, cross and flatten the leg (like a man crosses his leg), and lean forward and to the side towards the crossed foot.

There is a lot you can do at home for treatment before going into your doctor's office. Massage and trigger point work at the origin and insertion of the piriformis muscle is very effective. Ice therapy in the area of ​​the upper buttock along with stretching can also calm down an inflamed case of sciatica. Stretching the piriformis muscle as described above in the separated position with the affected leg crossed can help to lengthen the contracted muscle. Other muscles that should be stretched include the hamstring muscle, TFL, and glut medius. Lifestyle changes include avoiding long periods of sitting, beginning a light walking routine, and drinking lots of water to keep your muscles from cramping. If the condition does not improve within 2 weeks it is recommended that you see a specialist. Chiropractors are trained to diagnose and treat these conditions and will typically incorporate myofascial release, post isometric relaxation stretching, therapeutic ultrasound, electric muscle stimulation, and chiropractic manipulations to complement the above mentioned home treatments. In more severe cases you may need to see a neurologist or orthopedist. It is important to remember that prolonged ischemia or compression to the sciatic nerve can cause major damage to the nerve so it is recommended that you seek medical help if the condition lasts longer than 2 weeks.

Antihistamine Drug That Works

Marketed under the brand names Pentazine and Phenergan, Promethazine is an antihistamine that belongs to the phenothiazine group of drugs. Promethazines are available in tablets and suppositories and work by changing the chemical actions of your brain.

As antihistamine, the Promethazine blocks the effects of your body's naturally occurring histamine. It is used to treat allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itching, hives, itchy skin rashes and watery or itchy eyes. Additionally, it also raises vomiting and nausea or post-surgical pain and prevent motion sickness. You can also use the drug as a sleep aid or sedative.

Dosages and Indications:

Promethazine tablet is available in 12.5 milligrams, 25 milligrams and 50 milligrams. Meanwhile, each rectal suppository is available in 12.5 milligrams, 25 milligrams and 50 milligrams.

Whether orally or suppository, Promethazine is useful for vasomotor rhinitis, seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, uncomplicated or mild allergic skin manifestations of angioedema or urticaria, relieving allergic reactions to plasma or blood, anaphylactic reactions, postoperative sedation, pre-operative sedation, obstetric sedation , antiemetic therapy in post-surgery, adult and children sedation, control and prevention of vomiting and nausea associated with anesthesia and surgery.

Contraindications:

Promethazine is not recommended for use in treating pneumonia, asthma or any lower respiratory tract diseases. If you are experiencing uncontrollable movements of the eyes, lips, face, arms, legs, tongue, arm and face or twitching, these are some early signs of dangerous adverse reactions. Take note that the drug should not be given to children 2 years and below because it can cause death or severe breathing problems. Side Effects:

The most identified side effect of this drug is drowsiness. In rare cases, Promethazine may cause respiratory depression, agitated behavior, delirium and nightmares.
