Mushroom Spawn Making – How to Make Your Own Mushroom Spawn

One of the best things about growing mushrooms is that when you have started to grow them you can continue to grow them for years and years without the need to purchase any more mushroom spawn. It is very simple to create your own spawn and be able to store this in a fridge ready to use for several weeks.

Mushroom spawn is simply some kind of food which has mycelium growing through it. The food is usually some kind of bird seed such as corn or rye grain, and this is used because the mycelium loves to grow through it and because of the shape and small size of the grain it provides many innoculation points (it has a large surface area which means you have more chance of the mycelium “leaping off” and growing through your substrate).

Creating your own mushroom spawn can be a very easy process when you know exactly how its done and when you are aware of the possible problems caused by contaminations (which is why it is very important to have good sterile procedures). To make your own spawn you firstly need your own mushroom spores. Take a mushroom and leave it on a piece of foil to leave a spore print. Next you add a little distilled water to this print (a few millilitres) and mix this solution using something called an innoculation loop (small piece of wire with a metal curve in one end). This will mix the spores with the water. Next you need to use a syringe and suck up this solution. As mentioned before its important that the syringe is clean and any other equipment too.

You can store this spore syringe in a cool place such as a refrigerator until ready to use. Next you will need to get a large jar and fill it up with the chosen grain (such as Rye grain). Place a piece of tyvek over the cover and seal with a metal lid. It helps if you drill 4 small holes in the lid (near the corners) which are used as innoculation points later.

When you are ready take the spore syringe and inject a few millilitres of your solution into the 4 holes in the lid of the jar. Usually one syringe can innoculate around 5 jars. When complete, place the jars in a warm place and after about 4 weeks your contents will have colonised and mushrooms will start to form! Or you could simply use this colonised jar of grain and use it as spawn – the choice is yours. You could even multiply the spawn and turn the 5 jars into as many as 25! This is simply done by getting more jars of grain and mixing in part of the colonised spawn jar with the others. One jar can turn into 10 if done properly!

How To Write More Powerful Reports

There is one key difference between reports and most other forms of business writing, and we get a hint of that in the word, “report.” Whereas with many other forms of written comms you can be a little creative and put your own slant on your words, in a report you must not. Not in theory, anyway.

In a report, you’re supposed to report – not embellish, embroider, influence, etc. Just the facts and nothing but the facts.

This does not, however, mean that reports need to be dull and boring. It does, however, mean that you can’t make the content more interesting than it really is. Impossible? No, it just takes some good organization and clear writing.

Before we go any further, there are numerous books and training courses on the market that teach you the formalities and practicalities of report writing. Some are more long-winded than others. Most of them are good.

Here in this article I can’t do what other writers do in a book, so if you need to write reports a lot, I recommend that you buy one or two of the most popular books and study them. What I’m doing here then, is to highlight the points I think are most important to help you make your reports more readable, and the information in them come across more vividly.

If you work in a larger organization, there will probably be set formats for reports, at least for the internal variety. Whether you like them or not you’re normally obliged to stick to them. However the way you roll out and write your content is still up to you.

So what are the key points to focus on?

1. Write for your reader

Don’t allow yourself to fall into “business” jargon and phrasing no matter how much you or other people may feel it’s more appropriate. It isn’t. Use language and tone of voice that your key readers will feel comfortable with. If you don’t know what they feel comfortable with, find out. It’s well worth taking the trouble, because it will make the report much more enjoyable for them to read – a good reflection on you.

If your report is to be read by a wide variety of different audiences, focus your language on the most important groups. Ensure that less topic-literate readers are catered for by using discreet explanations of technical terms or perhaps a short glossary of terms as an appendix within the report.

2. Organize your information sensibly

Start by writing yourself out a list of headings which start at the beginning and finish with the conclusions of your information. If you must include a lot of background information before you get into the “meat” of the information, section it off clearly with headings that say that it’s background (“Research Project Objectives,” “Research Methods Used To Collate Information,” “Personnel Involved In Questionnaire,” etc.) so those who know it all already can skip straight to the important stuff.

Make sure your headings “tell the story” so someone glancing through those alone will get the basic messages. (You’ll find that busy executives will thank you for doing this, especially when they have 16 other, similar reports to read in a crowded commuter train on the way into a meeting to discuss all of them.) Then fill in the details under each heading as concisely as you can.

3. Use an “executive summary” to tell it in a nutshell

Depending on the nature of your report you may be expected to include an executive summary, or at least an introduction that captures the key points of your information. The objective of this is to give the reader the key issues as quickly as possible. Write this after you’ve done the body of the report, not before. Use your list of headings as a guide.

Keep strictly to the facts – this is still part of the report, not your interpretation of it. Strip each sentence down to bare bones with minimal adjectives and adverbs. Use short words and sentences. Don’t just get to the point – start with it and stick to it.

4. If your interpretation is called for, keep it separate

If part of your remit is to comment on the report and/or its conclusions, keep this separate from the main body of information. (Blocked off in a box or under a clearly separated heading will do.)

Naturally as you’re professional you will be as objective as possible. But if you do feel strongly one way or another, ensure that your argument is put as reasonably as possible without going on for pages and pages. Remember, brief is beautiful, although it’s harder to write briefly (and include all the important points) than it is to produce words in abundance.

5. Don’t get carried away with illustrations

Graphs and charts are great to illustrate important issues and like the man said, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” However ensure that those you use are of a level of complexity that will be understood by the least topic-literate of your readers. There’s nothing more irritating than a graph that takes you 20 minutes to decipher. It’s not so much a case that readers are too stupid to understand a complex graph, as it is that they don’t want to spend too much time working it out. The easier/quicker you make it for readers to understand and assimilate your information, the more successful your report.

Try, also, to keep graphs and charts physically adjacent to the text that talks about the same thing. There’s nothing more irritating for the reader if they have to keep flipping from front to back of a document. (When in doubt, think of someone reading your report on that crowded commuter train.)

6. Cut the clutter

Still on that topic, try to avoid including too many diverse elements in your report, no matter how long and involved it is. If you do need to include appendices and various bits of background material, research statistics, etc., make sure they’re neatly labeled and contained at the back of your document.

As I suggested earlier, don’t ask readers to skip back and forth, directing them with asterisks and other reference directing symbols. If you’re writing a medical report or paper then you’re obliged to include these when quoting references from other papers, but please keep even these to a minimum. They’re very distracting and can break your reader’s concentration.

7. Take some trouble to make it look nice

I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but people do. Like it or not. According to UK Image consultant Tessa S, when you walk into a meeting, 55% of your first impression of someone is reflected exclusively in the way you’re dressed. Documents fall into the same hole. So how your document looks goes a long way to creating the right impression of your work, and of you.

Obviously if a report is due to go outside your organization and particularly to clients or customers, you will be careful to ensure it’s polished and clearly branded with your corporate identity and all that. However, how an internal report looks is important, too, although your Head of Finance might have apoplexy if you bind it in expensive glossy card. Be sensible with the internal variety – neat, understated, groomed looks don’t have to cost much but they “say” a lot about the value of your report (and you.)

8. A minute on minutes

I think minute-taking is a horrible job, having done so for 6 years while on a charity fundraising committee. And being useless at handwriting (thanks to decades of computers and typewriters) never mind shorthand (was thrown out of secretarial school after 3 weeks) I struggled for months to scribble everything down to price later, until I realized that my brain was a far more efficient filter of information.

At the end of each agenda item, I asked myself the classic reporter questions of “who, what, where, when, why, how and how much.” All I had to do was jot down a few words and when I got home to my trusty PC, I could expand those into realistic summaries of what went on. As much of the dialogue in meetings is either unnecessary, repetitive, or both, simply use your brain as a filter. That’s what it’s trained to do for you in your day-to-day life, so it works for meetings too.

One word of warning though; don’t wait too long before your work up your minutes. Another trick the brain does is to forget after a few hours or a day or so at most…

Hypothyroidism is rare in these age groups, but it can occur. For infants, symptoms can include choking on food and a poor appetite. It can also include scaly, dry skin. For teens and children the symptoms are behavioral and also changes in performance at school. They may also gain weight but have a low growth rate. Teens can also have delayed puberty and look a lot younger than their real age.

Progression of the Disease

As the disease progresses and becomes more severe, you may see puffiness around your eyes, a decrease in body temperature, your heart rate getting slower and also heart failure. At its worst, severe hypothyroidism can even lead to a life-threatening coma, or myxedema coma. This coma can be triggered because of a severe illness, stress, surgery or a traumatic injury. Man has longought to conquer Mother Nature and bind her to his whim. One of the largest fiascoes was the attempt to mechanize childbirth and feeding. In his ultimate folly man determined that processes which have evolved over millennium could have swept away with the slash of a scalpel and the substitution of mass produced milk alternatives. The vast majority of those of us born during the twenty century bear many unforeseen burdens as a result. The latest one to come to my attention is the body / mind's program of adrenal dominance.

When the body is stressed, the adrenals are fired up, releasing adrenalin and cortisol which kicks us into overdrive in order to handle an emergency situation. It is nature's way of assuring our survival. This rush consumes extra resources in order to fuel the stimulation, which is then replenished, after the emergency is deal with. When we do not have the ability to release stress, life becomes a string of emergencies forcing the adrenals into constant production which historically leads to collapse.

The hypothalamus is designed to be the regulatory gland in the body. When the adrenals are constantly pumping out emergency hormones, the whole body is stressed creating a feedback cycle. This turns on the sympathetic (emergency) nervous system which keeps us in a state of high alert, making it nearly impossible to get quiet inside. The impact on the entire system is premature aging, even to the point of shorting the telomeres of the DNA, which protect the cells from deterioration during their periodic reproduction. A past study from the Mayo Clinic estimated that 85% of all disease is stress related.

Normally, when a baby experiences a traumatic event two things happen. The baby is picked up and taken to his / her mother's breast, at which point the mouth opens, releasing tension in the TMJ. As the baby nurses, they are both flooded with endorphins, along with all those other chemicals, the nature and importance of which, we are still discovering. The endorphins are what create the beatific radiance we associate with motherhood. They also have the effect of releasing the emotional impact of the event, teaching the baby on a deep core level that he is loved and how to let go of stress. Breast feeding also plays a big part in the maturation process. It jump starts the digestive system, passing on vital bacteria which line the intestines. It also plays a crucial role in the development of the chakra system.

Barbara Brenan, a NASA scientist turned healer, used to teach in her four year healing school, that the second chakra could not fully form without breastfeeding. So where does that leave those of us who were not breastfed? Are we condemned to a life of worry fear and anxiety? Are we forever to be plagued with difficulty in bonding with our chosen partners and children? Can we find peace only on a beach in Maui or during a deep hypnotic meditation tape? Can we ever unwind the layers of emotional hurt and trauma, piled up like a garbage heap waiting for some future anthropologist to sort through? The answer is yes although it's not in a pill, it is possible to find daylight and walk out of the nightmare. The rewards are awesome and may take months to unfold. As your system unwinds everything comes with it and you will find yourself uncovering layers of pain and suffering, coming up and releasing sometimes slowly and then sometimes in a big rush.

Are You at Risk to Be Buried Alive?

As we sit on our sofa and watch the evening news on the television we sadly view all the destruction that has transpired in Oklahoma. Watching with intent eyes we begin to ponder the possible purchase of a safe room or storm shelter. After witnessing all the horrid deaths which have taken place we go to the internet and beginning researching these safe areas that can be built into your homestead. Naturally, our hearts go out to these families who have lost loved ones in this disaster although you may be thinking along the lines of getting either a safe room or a storm shelter. In our way of thinking we would consider this as an emergency insurance policy and in many ways we would be right in viewing it as such. We continuously see the rescue efforts from the personnel attempting to free the people from the ruble of the tornado aftermath and questions start to come to mind.

What we are not seeing are the tales relating to those people who had the foresight to purchase and install a safe room within their home prior to a disaster. Are they as safe as we may initially think? We find stories originating from Moore Oklahoma that people are now being rescued form their safe rooms or storm shelters at alarming rates. These people are essentially trapped in their shelters from all the scattered debris. In short, they are buried alive.

This certainly appears to be quite a predicament since they were responsible enough to research, invest and build their safe room or shelter. They equally made proper plans for the safety of their family in the event of an emergency such as this only to discover that they would become victims of their own endeavors.

Are we advocating the elimination of safe rooms or emergency storm shelters? Not a chance however we are suggesting a few additional survival tools being included in your preps. My family and I had encountered tornado weather when we were stationed in New Mexico, Nebraska and Kansas and if I had a choice I would have constructed either a safe room inside the basement of our home or a storm Shelter close by. I can recall being notified of approaching tornados and every eye in the neighborhood appeared to be aimed skyward as we all watched for this dreadful weather phenomenon. I know first hand at the dangers posed by tornadoes so I would never recommend the elimination of safe rooms though it would not hurt in the least to include a pick ax and sometimes a hydraulic tool kit and make sure that you know how to use these items in the event of an emergency.

While we fully understand that it is nearly impossible to completely safeguard our family and self from the destructive nature of a tornado there are some things an individual can accomplish to increase the likelihood of survival. First they can build that safe room or storm shelter we spoke earlier but before we proceed to far into our discussion let's briefly differentiate between a safe room and a storm shelter.

Although the terms are generally used synonymously they are not the same.
Typically, the safe room is located above ground and usually within the perimeter of the home. It is fortified so that in the event of an emergency people can enter the room and remain safe. This has the advantage of keeping them safe during a natural disaster or during an attempted home break in. During a tornado a safe room can add a bit of protection but is not the ideal conditions.

A safe room should have a means by which the occupants can communicate with the outside world such as a cell phone or land line. Usually, it will be equipped with a well stocked first aid kit, a flashlight, several blankets and a supply of packaged foods. If you are like me you will also want to keep several gas masks and a portable toilet on hand. A safe room built to proper code can to a degree withstand severe weather much better than the average home would. By knowing where you should build your safe room it can help you provide the most protection possible. You may wish to consider your basement, a first-floor room or in your garage.

As stated, a fortified safe room will provide a certain measure of protection which is missing from the usual home. You are much closer to your area of ​​safety than if you had to travel to a public shelter and you will likely feel better psychologically in your own room. The major disadvantage is that since your safe room is located above-ground they are simply not viewed to be as safe as an underground option.

Storm shelters on the other hand are different from the safe rooms in several ways.

They are built underground and not within the confines of a person's home. A storm shelter is designed specifically to keep the occupants safe during any sort of inclement weather and especially when confronted with tornadoes. We find that storm Shelters are built for single family use and are generally close enough to the home so that one can quickly gain access to it however it is also far enough away that in the event of a collapsed home, the escape door would not be cover up with debris. Storm shelters should be stocked with drinking water, packaged foods, first-aid kits and a means of communication in case you need to call for help. Being built under ground the storm shelter is considered safer than a safe room which is above-ground.

The downfalls of a storm shelter are the initial cost involved. It is usually very expensive to have one built and installed. Since it is a separate building from the family's usual home the individuals must leave the home to enter the shelter. In some cases this can be dangerous for the family if done at the very last minute.

There are several items of interest that must be taken into consideration when you employ safe rooms and storm Shelters. First and high on our list is the possibility that you can become trapped in your room or shelter from the various debris which has fallen. This rubbish could prevent you from leaving your sanctuary when it is safe to.

Secondly, and just as dangerous is the thought that during an adverse condition you stand a very good chance that you may drown in your safe location as a result of a broken water main. Combine both of these possibilities together and they can spell a dangerous situation. What this is telling us is that when planning your safe room or shelter it is advantageous to use care and good sense in its construction as well as its planning.

We have already determined that the storm Shelter is superior over the safe room so if money is the primary obstacle you might wish to consider something similar to the old time root cellars from days past. Build it away from trees and other structures that could trap you in it. Maintain multiple means by which you could egress the location so that if one exit is blocked you could escape by way of the second. Above all do not forget that even though you have stocked up on food, water and various medical supplies you should also have in your tool kit a chainsaw and some sort of hydraulic lift kit to help you get out if trapped inside.

We as preppers may develop a new interest in these types of safe rooms and Shelters as a result of the disaster but we also will need to develop a good construction plan which would keep us out of arms way when the inevitable hits.

Compression Pump – A Choice for Patients With Lymphedema

Compression pumps can be used on the arms or legs and they are portable and easy to take along wherever you go. They can reduce pain and swelling by moving excess fluid from the limb or limbs that are affected and returning it to the cardiovascular system. This is handy for patients who may need this treatment several times a week, allowing them to perform the therapy at home rather than making the trip to a therapist.

There are two phases required for using the compression pump. The preparatory phase is first. This prepares the lymphatic vessels for receiving fluid transported by the pump. If this part of the therapy is not completed correctly, it can cause damage to other tissues. In the home setting, self massage is the best method preparing these vessels.

The compression pump is available in two types which are recommended for treatment of lymphedema. The Sequential Gradient pump is used primarily for legs. It has an automated pump that pushes the air into a sleeve that is placed on the affected leg. The settings of the pump will allow the sleeve to inflate and then release, which is similar to the natural flow that is normally created by the body. Pushing the lymphatic fluid from the end of the leg and into the body where it can be returned to the cardiovascular system, the patient is relieved of the pain and pressure of the swollen area.

A FlexiTouch pump will perform both the preparatory phase of the treatment as well as the actual pumping that is used to return the lymphatic fluid to the body. They may be used on the arms or legs and the patient sets or reclines in the recommended position. The pump is turned on and once the preparatory phase is completed, the pump automatically begins the drainage phase. It is vital that both phases be completed at the same time. This procedure takes approximately an hour per day.

Lymphedema is a fairly common affliction from which approximately 3 million people in the US suffer. Often it is developed after a patient has radiation treatments or surgery for cancer. The most common are breast, bladder, prostate and uterine cancer. It may also develop after treatment for melanoma and lymphoma. It may also be the result of deep vein thrombosis or trauma.

When a lymph channel becomes blocked due to damage because of surgery, the lymphatic fluid can not go through the lymph vessel. This causes the fluid to build up and it does not drain properly. The compression pump helps by helping to stimulate the lymphatic fluid to drain by the use of channels that are incorporated into the garment worn. The gentle inflating and deflating helps to move the fluid back into the body.

The pump is so quiet when working that patients can read or watch television. They deliver a continuous flow and are cost effective. The control panel is simple to use by following the directions included with the compression pump. Before using the pump it will require that the garment and the pump settings be adjusted. They are different for each patient and should be adjusted according to the instructions of the patient's therapist.
