Improve Vision Naturally – How to Cure Glaucoma Naturally

While most people are familiar with the term "glaucoma," not many people know exactly what it is, so what is glaucoma? Glaucoma is a deteriorating vision problem which is caused by excess strain on the eyes. While the cause may sound as if those who have glaucoma are in pain, the truth is that most people who are diagnosed with it do not even know or feel their symptoms. If you are diagnosed with this condition, it can be a frightening experience, mainly due to the fact that the first indications do not show up until it is too late to fix the problem. As soon as vision quality starts to deteriorate, there is no way to reverse its effects.

Tunnel vision and having a narrow line of sight are the first symptoms which manifest themselves. There is not much room to improve or repair this, as they quickly progress to the final stage of glaucoma – blindness.

Doctors believe that glaucoma is caused by bad circulation around the eye sockets, clogged channels, andadequate drainage of the eyes. These factors are generally caused excess mental stress, eye strain, and high levels of toxins present in the body.

The only "cure" for glaucoma is not really a cure at all, but just medication which is given to treat the symptoms, but not cure the problem. The medication works to relieve tension and increase drain from the eyes. Unfortunately, the majority of people diagnosed with glaucoma still become blind. The medicine is given to allow the patient to see a little while longer, adding life to the vision cycle, until blindness historically sets in.

Because glaucoma is mainly brought on by stress, the stress will not stop once the disease is diagnosed. More often than not, stress levels get higher because many patients are overly concerned by the threat of going blind, which is inevitable. All too often, sufferers of this disease occupy themselves daily with these stressful thoughts and make the symptoms markedly worst.

All patients of glaucoma should receive medical attention as blindness is unavoidable. With this in mind, there are also many things that sufferers can do, taking precautions to cure the symptoms yourself by relaxing the eyes. Each night when you go to sleep, make sure to relax completely before you go to sleep. When you are in bed, close your eyes, and create a mental image of your muscles becoming more relaxed from head to toe. Do your best to try and concentrate especially on the areas and muscles around the eye sockets. By doing this, you will unduly wake up more refreshed, and releasing a lot of pressure which leads to blindness.

While having glaucoma is certainly scary thing to think about, learning how to put the eyes at ease is the best natural way to cure this vision-threatening condition.

Swine Flu – Enough's Enough

Are you one of the scared or one of the tired of hearing about it? It seems most people now fall into one of these categories when the topic of the swine flu comes up.

I am not one of the scared.

It was after reading a newsletter from Dr. Julian Whitaker, MD, that I decided to follow his footsteps and put in my two cents (and common sense) as well by writing this article.

As the global pandemic alert levels continue to climb, media jumps to find the most shocking pieces to report and government protect itself by taking strong action. Despite the fact that there has only been one reported death in the United States, a toddler brought in from Mexico, Governments around the world are declaring states of public emergency. Countries are cutting flights to Mexico. President Obama is requesting billions of dollars to be spent on monitoring the disease, stocking up on medicines, and to help other countries. Countries are baking pork products. Stores are running out of surgical masks. The World Health Organization is warning countries not to lower their guard.

Some perspective:

  • "Nearly all infections outside of Mexico have been mild and only a handful of patients have needed hospital treatment."
  • According to research conducted at the World Influenza Center in the UK, "Preliminary analysis of the swine flu virus suggests it is a fairly mild strain, scientists say."
  • "Common seasonal flu kills 250,000 to 500,000 people every year worldwide, far more than the current outbreak of swine flu."

Some Traditional Chinese Medicine solutions:

I can not predict the future. I do know, however, that the best way to not get the swine flu is to not get sick. 🙂 So, how do you avoid getting sick? Or, at least, how do you not get too sick? You support your whole body, including your immune system.

Written 2000 years ago, the book Su Wen ("Plain Questions"), a TCM classic, states that "If 'zheng Qi' [the functioning of the body] remains strong, 'xie Qi' [viruses, bacteria, parasites, etc .] can not invade the body. 'Zheng Qi' must be weak for the invasion of 'xie Qi' to take place.

Part of that is certainly to strengthen your immune system, which TCM referes to as 'wei Qi' or defensive Qi. Herbs such as huang qi (astralagus), ling zhi (reishi mushroom), and dong chong xia cao (cordyceps) are powerful immune stimulants. Herbs that help kill a virus or bacteria include ban lan gen (isatis root), lian qiao (forsythia fruit), and jie geng (balloon flower rhizome). One challenge is that because each virus and bacteria can have very different properties, and because each herb affects the body differently, you are best to talk with a qualified TCM herbalist or TCM doctor to determine what will work for you if you come down with a flu.

In addition, because all your body's systems are interconnected, you will want to make sure that your digestive system, cardiovascular system, reproductive system, respiratory system, and nervous system are also addressed. Injured? Take care of that so that your body can focus on other health issues. And, I did not even mention your emotional wellness-feeling down can make you more susceptible to illness.

Acupuncture can also be used to build your defenses and balance to your whole body, not to mention the major reason why people come to see me-to relieve stress.

Stuff You Can Do:

  • Get enough sleep
  • Wash your hands (just use regular soap; let's not keep creating more superbugs with all the chemical antibacterial products out there; wash your hands while singing "Happy Birthday" in your head so that you know that you've washed long enough)
  • De-stress (meditate, breathe, find a hobby)
  • Eat healthy (more veggies, less sugar; more whole foods, less processed foods)
  • Listen to your body. If you feel the beginning of a cold or flu, slow down, take some immune boosting supplements listed below, get more sleep, and try to avoid infecting others (stay home and maybe do as the Japanese do and wear a mask when you're sick so that all others do not have to)
  • Take vitamin C, essential fatty acids (fish oils, flax oil, hemp oil, etc.), probiotics (good bacteria have been shown to stimulate the immune system)
  • If you start to succumb, find a good herbal immune product. I have my favorites-FluStop, manuka honey, oregano oil, and customized TCM herbal formulas.
  • And, above all, do not panic. Panic and stress stimulate your adrenal glands to pump out adrenaline which will send you into a state of fight or flight. That brings blood away from "non-vital" systems for your immediate survival-immune system included-and to your heart to pump more blood and your muscles to get ready to move! Continued stress causes your body to release cortisol which further weakens your immune system.

Suggestions for Health Sector Reform in Trinidad and Tobago

Health reform refers to the changes in health administration, health planning and, health research that places significant emphasis on local health challenges aimed at improving health administration, health planning and healthcare. They will combine to produce an efficient model of healthcare delivery capable of increasing patient physical, medical and psychological safety. Health reform should be driven by empirical data, best practice and evidence based practice. A variety of health statistics; such as mortality, manpower needs, technology functioning and patient satisfaction; should be analyzed and employed in strengthening health systems.

In Trinidad and Tobago the current system of healthcare is highly centralized. The Ministry of Health maintains operational oversight of five regional health authorities. These are the North West Regional, North Central Regional, Eastern Regional, South West Regional and Tobago Regional. South West, North West and North Central are the largest regions; each catering for the healthcare needs of more than three hundred thousand people.

A significant reform should be the specialization of the Ministry of Health in fewer functions aimed to improve healthcare efficiency. For example, it can concentrate on data compilation and analysis. It should be staffed with expert health researchers tasked with analyzing changes in epidemiology, and trends in morbidity and mortality. Furthermore, the Ministry of Health should have the power to instruct regional authorities to make systemic and resource changes based on the statistics collected and analyzed. Regional bodies should be mandated to provide health based statistics to the Ministry of Health quarterly. The Ministry of Health must maintain general oversight of regional authorities. It should produce annual reports based on self- monitoring and evaluation of the systems, performances and challenges in each region. Financial statements and audits should be submitted annually to the Ministry of Health and factors accounting for variance should be justified. Recommendations should be made for improvements and incidences of white-collar crime prosecuted.

One major reform that should be implemented is granting absolute autonomy to regional health authorities for the delivery of healthcare. They should be able to generate their own funds by charging fees for their services. This would eliminate dependency on the state or Ministry of Finance for funding. Each regional health authority should be able to invest in the stock market or undertake other income generating measures it deems feasible. Its funds should be spent in accordance with the health needs of the population it serves. Regional authorities should be responsible for primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare. In addition, they should be given oversight of private hospitals and health facilities in their geographic regions. Private facilities should be subject to price controls to avoid exorbitant charges and should be required to pay at least ten percent of their annual profit to the regional authority.

In addition, regional authorities should have the power to ensure that all health institutions and providers adhere to national accreditation standards. The Ministry of Health should be charged with responsibility for developing national accreditation standards in all aspects of the operations of health institutions. These should include hospitals, pharmacies, private practice. Also conventional and alternative medicines should be subject to accreditation standards. Everything and every health based institution should be subject to accreditation standards comparable with those of more developed countries such as Canada and the United States.

It is palpable that the boundaries of each regional authority be redefined so that they are of almost equal population size. At this time South West Regional is responsible for slightly over one half million people. Therefore given its limited resources, it cannot be expected to perform with greatest efficiency. Given the fact that the better health facilities are situated in urban centers, this would be a challenge that must be overcome judiciously. To accommodate this reform, regional authorities should induce joint public and private partnerships in the provision of healthcare centers in rural and other districts less accessible to major hospitals and health centers.

To make the health system efficient, a centralized electronic health record system should be developed and implemented. This would ensure that patients could access care in any region. Thus it would make it easy to access health records from any healthcare facility owned and administered within any regional authority. It is expected that the Ministry of Health should take a leading role in this enterprise. Records of patients in private hospitals should be accessible to regional authorities given that they may be moved to a public hospital if the care they require cannot be attained there. Sometimes for financial reasons such as exorbitant cost, patients may be moved to a public hospital.

Employment policies should enable the free movement of skills and expertise across regions. In some instances, highly specialized surgeons and caregivers should be made available to patients in other regions on a needs basis. In other words, one region can pay another for the services of its skilled human or physical resources demanded.

Regional bodies can collaborate in health planning. They can develop their strategic, business and budget plans cooperatively. Afterwards they can tweak their plans to fit their population needs. The main advantages of centralized planning will be greater transparency, accountability and inter-operational functionality. Inter-planning can reduce competition between regions and ensure that scare resources are used efficiently. In effect, the Ministry of Health can compare operational effectiveness and best practice across all regions and provide opportunities to strength operational or institutional efficiency.

The health system should be reformed so that it is able to provide high quality care for patients. Patients should be well-educated to take advantage of a competent, highly organized and skillfully administered healthcare system. Finally reform must involve all stakeholders; government, private practitioners and citizenry. A convergent bottom up and top down model should be adopted so that there is universal buy-in to health reform capable of contributing to economic and social development of the country’s human capital.

Flu of 2009

The 2009 flu season was supposed to be a “routine.” Usually, patients take their seasonal flu shot. Those people who had flu symptoms normally go to the doctor’s office for an exam and testing. It is usually easy to spot the flu patients. Among the usual nasal congestion and sore throats, there are certain people whose appearance is really just sickly. These people usually appear to have just woken up, their hair is mussed, they are unshaven, and they are covered in sweaters or blankets but still shivering. In the doctor’s office, they are brought back and examined for signs of the flu or other problems. If their throat is red, they are usually checked for strep throat.

The flu nasal swab, which is an antibody test for types A or B Flu, then became available. Judging by the patient’s clinical appearance and a positive test for Flu A or B, the doctor might prescribe the antiviral drugs Tamiflu or Relenza to lessen the severity and length of illness. However, 20% of the American population acquired the 2009 flu thus far. Billions of dollars in lost work productivity and hospital expenses come out of the country’s pocket. At least 200,000 patients were hospitalized and there were 36,000 flu-related deaths. On top of that, something new now was added for 2009.

The great scientists at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta maintain careful observation over flu outbreaks all over the world. They test and name each flu. Using this data, scientists try to predict what seasonal flu will appear in the fall. They supervise pharmaceutical companies in the manufacture of the specific vaccine. When the flu scientists reach their prediction on the button, the vaccine is effective in 70 to 90% of recipients under age 65. It is less effective in recipients over 65, recipients who live in nursing homes, and those with chronic underlying illness. The vaccine is about 30% to 70% effective.

The usual seasonal vaccine contains attenuated virus of the A (H1N1) and the A(H3N3) variety. A virus is not actually a separate live entity, so when we severely debilitate, we then say in the vaccine “attenuation.” A virus is arguably the smallest semi-life form that exists in nature. It can only be seen with an electron microscope. It is called an obligate parasite. This means it must “live” within another living cell. It can only survive and replicate by taking over that cell’s complex biochemical machinery to manufacture other viral units like itself. The influenza virus has its RNA taken up by a host cell to begin the manufacture process. Eventually the host cell dies by its viral infection.Influenza viruses were first identified and studied by scientists in the 1930’s.

Type A viruses were the worst, and the ones typically producing epidemics and global pandemics. An epidemic is a local outbreak of the flu, usually annually, by viruses that already exist in the environment. It usually peaks in three weeks, and subsides after three weeks, sometimes affecting 50% of the population of that area.

The pandemic is a different phenomenon altogether. It is caused by a mutated virus to which humans do not have an immunity. It can be spread worldwide. Scientists found that they could identify Type A viruses into subtypes by protein structures on their outer surfaces. These are called H (Hemagglutinin A) and N (Neuramidase B). There is no division of a Type B virus into a subtype because they cause milder symptoms and are more sporadic. Type C influenza viruses are not subtyped because they cause even milder symptoms and less evidence of outbreaks. The Type A viruses caused the pandemics of 1917, 1957, and 1967 when millions of lives were lost. The worst year for this was 1918.

Pandemics can be caused by a viral mutation or the re-emergence of a virus that has not been around for years. All in all, humans lack immunity to that specific virus and cannot fight them. Viruses do not stay in humans throughout the year as they are prevalent in primarily fall and winter. Where do they stay dormant and hide? Scientists discovered that certain coastal birds seem to be the reservoir for the viruses. There is fairly good evidence that the birds harbor these viruses without manifesting disease and have probably done so for millions of years. You may see a television show where scientists raise huge nets to catch migrating coastal birds to see what viruses they are carrying. Therefore, probably all “flu” is, to an extent, “avian” or “bird flu”. It is theorized that wild ducks infect domestic ducks, which in turn, either spread it to chickens or swine. Therefore, most of the flu is “swine” flu. You are not going to catch the flu from a piece of pork in your refrigerator.

The current H1N1 seems to have started with a small swine population in a desolate area of Mexico. The American pork industry has been recently affected due to the public not buying as much pork. But this is not the problem. The problem seems to be this one batch of flu that arose in Mexico to which humans did not have an immunity. With travel being what it is today, it did not take long for the virus to spread from person to person. It has recently even been announced that a group of swine were found to have the swine flu in Minnesota. It seems that both pigs and possibly chickens have the same viral receptors as humans and thus can be a vector for human transmission.

Some people are not getting “Novel H1N1” (the newer name for the 2009 Swine Flu) because they perhaps gain some immunity from previous H1N1 immunization. Most people who saw the outbreak of swine flu in Mexico thought it was too far away to affect them. However, as we know, times have changed. Swine Flu (“Novel H1N1 Flu”) is now widespread in most of the United States and elsewhere in the world. You will hear about it on almost every newscast and different government agencies hold numerous press conferences. The amount of daily information is enormous.

The best scientists of our time are saying, “Get your Flu shot when it is available.” (Actually they are saying,”Get your seasonal Flu shot now and the Swine or Novel H1N1 vaccination as soon as it is available.”) On the other side are the “nay-sayers” who say, “The 2009 Flu is not as bad as they said. Don’t give it to your children: it will give them autism. It has mercury or thimerosal in it. For my part, I’m siding with the CDC: Everybody should have the seasonal vaccination and the H1N1 vaccination.

One thing to remember is that it takes time for the immune system to respond to the vaccine for the 2009 flu. A conservative estimate is that it takes 6-8 weeks to achieve its desired effect. That is why the vaccine is better if you take it sooner than later. There are two kinds of flu vaccine; more will become available as they are released. Flu-Mist is an attenuated virus that is squirted into your nose. Because it is attenuated, it will not give you the flu and are not infectious. This is approved for use on patients aged 2 to 49.

The other is the Flu Shot, usually administered in the upper arm. The shot can cause some mild symptoms like pain at the injection site, low-grade fever, and slight sluggishness. These side effects respond to Tylenol or Motrin. Neither of the vaccines will give you the Flu, though the guy sitting in the next desk swears up and down that the Flu vaccine always gives him the Flu. Both treatments are grown in eggs, so if you have an egg allergy you must discuss this with your doctor to plan a strategy or avoid the injection.

We know that people with impaired immune systems get worse illness. In pregnancy, the immune system is not up to par. Of the 100 or so patients who have required Intensive Care Unit treatment, 28 pregnant women have died. That is why the 2009 Flu vaccination (both kinds) are so important for all pregnant females. There have been no adverse effects of Flu vaccination in any pregnant female. Others with impaired immunity have worse Flu illness: Diabetics, people with liver or kidney disease, AIDS, chronic neurological impairment, cancer, and/or chronic inflammatory diseases like arthritis and colitis. And the list goes on and on with chronic medical disease. These are the ones that push the numbers into the thousands for Flu-related deaths and prolonged hospitalizations.

And there is one other very important group: Kids. Their immune systems just have matured and acquired the antibody response that healthy adults have. In shear numbers, children get the Flu 2 to 3 more times than adults. That is why we are hearing tragic stories about otherwise healthy 7 or 10 year olds who have died with the Flu (there were 11 pediatric deaths in this country during week 38 of the current epidemic). This is the reason that as the CDC is releasing vaccine, they are targeting children for vaccination among the first to receive it.In Novel H1N1 Flu, 77 people autopsied, fully one third had Streptococcus pneumoniae, or as it is also called, pneumococcal pneumonia. True, it’s variably treatable with antibiotics.

But there is a proven vaccine available for this bacteria. It protects against 23 encapsulated pneumonia bacteria. It’s available for all ages with increased risk for immune deficiency. We know now that only one-third of those who should receive it actually get it. It can be given along with the flu vaccine. Ask your doctor about it: “Pneumovax 23”.The H1N1 2009 Flu is spread by respiratory droplets. This is why students in classrooms and military recruits in barracks are so susceptible. All it takes is one cough or sneeze, and the virus is out there ready to be picked up by the next person. It can persist on surfaces like grocery cart handles for 2 to 6 hours—-touch those hands to your eyes, nose or mouth, and you’re exposed. The incubation is 1 to 4 days after you’ve breathed in the virus-laden droplets. It’s ironic that you, in turn, are at most risk of spreading it to others the day before you first show signs of illness. No wonder it spreads!

Children can be infected for more than 10 days. Severe immune deficiency can cause a person to shed the virus for weeks or months. These people should kindly wear their masks when they are around the rest of us. The symptoms of the 2009 Flu are pretty universally recognized: Malaise (Just feeling tired and sick), chills, fever, headache, bodyache, nasal congestion, sore throat, and sweats to name the most common. There are danger signs, though: A pregnant woman with the Flu, productive cough (say, with discolored sputum), chest pain, altered level of consciousness, (maybe disoriented or hard to arouse), appearing gray or with bluish lips like someone who is not getting enough oxygen, severe vomiting or signs of dehydration. When these are present, it’s time to get to the doctor or the ER. These are signs that you have some potentially serious complication of the Flu.

Most people will not have the serious symptoms, but we all need to be alert for them. Likewise most people with the Flu get better within a week or two. If the symptoms come roaring back after an initial clearing (relapse), this is a danger signal. In these circumstances, one might have pain with each breath, cough up nasty-looking sputum, or have hard shaking chills. Don’t fool around: Get to the doctor. Once again, children can have more serious symptoms and complications: Convulsions due to high fever, middle ear infections, and pneumonia.Let’s now talk about treatment. First of all don’t give aspirin to a child with fever. It is associated with Reye’s Syndrome: A serious multi-organ failure with potentially catastrophic brain injury. You can give Tylenol (acetaminophen) every 4 hours according to body weight for chills, fever, malaise and headache. Motrin (ibuprofen) every 6 hours seems to be a safe alternative. The person should take in a lot of fluids— Water, Gatorade, light soups, and eat lightly as the stomach allows. Bedrest with lots of naps is recommended to shorten the length of illness.

The person should stay home from work or school until there has been at least one full day without Tylenol or Motrin, and no fever. But what about the pregnant woman, the patient with chronic medical conditions, the person with decreased immune function, and very symptomatic children? These are the cases in which the doctor must see and decide whether to prescribe antiviral medication. It can be used prophylactically for persons closely exposed to the Flu patient to lessen or prevent the Flu. The 2 antivirals that we use are oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza). Tamiflu comes as a caplet for adults or a liquid for children. Relenza comes in a metered dose inhaler. Both are used every day for 10 days. They work best when given within the first two days of symptoms. They decrease the severity of the symptoms and shorten the course of the 2009 Flu. Relenza is not a good choice for patients with asthma or chronic lung disease.

The CDC and the Biopharmaceutical companies have worked exhaustively to prepare a safe vaccine to keep people from getting the severe ramifications of the flu. That’s it, pure and simple. There is a lot of magical, wishful thinking in the population on how to “beat the flu,” but science is not on their side. There is no vitamin, raw vegetable, or special drops to prevent the flu. “Flu Parties” are a terrible idea to get flu immunity. It is time to realize that the CDC is a collection of the best minds in science and medicine, dedicated to the protection of health for the U.S. citizens and person around the world in the event of a pandemic. It is not the IRS, Homeland Security, or the CIA. It is doctors and scientists trying to keep the public well, period. It’s time to stop blowing the conspiracy horn and take your shots. In doing so, you protect yourself, your family, your co-workers, and your fellow citizens in general. So, roll up those sleeves!

I was watching a press conference the other day by Dr. Ann Schuchat, the CDC Immunization Director. She had a very well-constructed report addressing the plans for mass immunization in a tiered way so that the ones at most risk would receive their vaccinations first. She was very candid about flu deaths to the present, and the intricacies of combating the epidemic, or more correctly, the pandemic of novel H1N1 (Swine Flu, as it is often known.) What impressed me a lot was the presence of major news reporting organizations: AP, UPI. Atlanta Journal, Washington Post, ABC, and USA Today. They all asked excellent questions and received excellent answers. The conference lasted about 35 minutes, and if every person could tune in to these informative events or rely on major reporting presentations, there would be a lot less misinformation out there.

Here is the discussion of the 2009 flu in a nutshell:

1.) Get your seasonal flu vaccination, either shot or nasal spray;
2.) Get your Novel H1N1 (Swine Flu) vaccination when it is available;
3.) If you are pregnant or have chronic illness be sure to get both;
4.) Be sure kids are vaccinated;
5.) If you have severe flu or a relapse–see your doctor;
6.) If you have the warning signs of severe illness– see your doctor;
7.) Wear a mask if you are sick or severely immune deficient;
8.) It takes about a week to get over the flu. Do not return to work or school until you have been fever-free for at least 48 hours; drink plenty of fluids, take Tylenol or Motrin for fever, and bedrest as much as possible. Do not give other over-the-counter medicines to young children without consulting a doctor; do not give aspirin for fever as it may lead to Reye’s Syndrome;
9.) Learn as much as you can about the Flu from reliable sources;
10) There are no magical Flu preventatives or treatments out there–Rely on science and a physician to get through this time.

Stroke (Brain Attack) Part VII – How to Prevent Stroke With Nutritional Supplements

As we mentioned in previous articles, stroke is caused by uncontrolled diet that is high in saturated and trans fats resulting in cholesterol building up in the blood vessel in the brain that block the circulation of blood to the body, including cells in the brain. If not enough oxygen is delivered to the brain cells, some cells die off and can not reproduce, the you may have a stroke. Other strokes happen when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures causing the cells in your brain to be depleted of oxygen, so they die and can never come back. Nutritional supplements have played an important role for nutritionally deficient patients in preventing stroke and here are some of them:

1. B-complex
Three B-vitamins: folate, B-6, and B-12 can lower homocysteine, an amino acid that is naturally found in the body and study shows that the higher level of homocysteine in the blood, the higher the risk of stroke.

2. Beta-carotene
Beta-carotene is an antioxidant that may reduce oxidative stress to brain cells. Such stress occurs when highly volatile forms of oxygen damage cell structure. Study shows that beta-carotene helps to reduce the risk against cerebral infraction and stroke.

3. Vitamin E
Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps to reduce arterial clotting.

4. Selenium
Selenium is a powerful agent that helps to keep tissues and arms elastic. It also helps to reduce the stickiness of the blood and decrees the risk of clotting, in turn lowering the risk of heart attack and stroke. Selenium increases the ratio of HDL (good) cholesterol to LDL (bad) cholesterol.

5. Pycnogenol
Pycnogenol helps to keep collagen elastic and soften the blood platelets, making blood flow more efficiently.

6. Co enzyme Q-10
Co enzyme is a strong antioxidant that not only protects low density lipoprotein LDL against oxidants, but also helps for getting oxygen to the cells.

7. Lecithin
Lecithin is a fat-like substance called a phospholipid that helps to remove bad cholesterol and other lipids from the body. It also protects the arms and organs from the build up of fatty tissue that can lead to stroke or heart attack.

8. Melatonin
Melatonin is a neurohormone produced in our body by the pineal gland. It is a powerful antioxidant that easily penetrates the blood-brain barrier and is used to treat thrombotic stroke.

9. Vitamin C
Vitamin C helps to strengthen the arterial wall, lowering the risk of heart diseases and stroke.

Causes of Toenail Fungus and Fingernail Fungus

Nail fungus is unsightly, difficult to treat and difficult to prevent.

This frustrates many people and leads them to taking the toxic drug Lamisil.

Learn what causes nail fungus:

* Trauma: when a nail is hit against something, the nail lifts from the nail bed allowing fungus to creep under the nail and set in. If the nail is protected immediately after, fungus may be prevented. Ask your doctor how to prevent bacteria and fungi from getting under your nail bed. Salt water soaks, hydrogen peroxide, betadine, gentian violet all may help. However, be careful as these can be contraindicated with certain types of trauma – especially severa trauma. Ask your doctor.

* Environment: when a nail is exposed to wet areas, high humidity, warm temperatures, or alkaline environment [high pH], this sets up the opportune spot for fungus to set in. Create a dry, breathable and acidic environment. Vegetarians are more prone to fungus as their diet is highly alkaline. Soap is alkaline forming but it is also anti-bacterial so what to do there? Skin is supposedly to be slightly acidic so use moisturizers that promote that. Moor mud moisturizers provide an acidic pH. Use all cotton or all wool socks as these breathe well. Avoid synthetic socks which do not wick water away from your feet.

* Weak immune function: if the immune system is not functioning strongly, it can not fight local infections such as fungus. Support the immune system with proper diet, rest, exercise and supplements.

* Poor blood circulation: without proper blood flow to an area, the immune system can not get there. Then fungus can set it. Also poor blood flow leads to poor nail nutrition allowing the nail bed to be traumatized more easily – trauma may lead to nail fungus. Exercise, dress appropriately and consider contrast showers. They warm you up and increase circulation.

These are some of the major causes of nail fungus. Read our other articles explaining how to treat nail fungus naturally.

Kwashiorkor in an Affluent Society

Kwashiokor is a form of protein-energy malnutrition that we generally associate with children from war-torn countries of Africa. The financial and social affluence generally protects our population, especially the children, from protein deprivation. The low incidence of Kwashiokor delays its diagnosis in the special groups that are at risk of developing it. Chase HP, in a review of kwashiorkor, suggests that children on severe protein restriction due to nutritional ignorance, perceived milk intolerance, or food faddism can develop Kwashiokar. Chronic malabsorptive conditions such as cystic fibrosis are also a high-risk group. Hospitalized patients with decreased nutritional intake or severe nutritional loss are also prone to protein-energy malnutrition.

The symptoms include retardation in stature and tissue development, poor development of muscle and lack of tone, edema, potbelly, swollen legs and face, anorexia and diarrhea. The person stops interacting with the surroundings. The pathologic and biochemical changes include fatty infiltration of the liver, reduced serum levels of triglycerides, phospholipids, and cholesterol, reduced amylase, lyase and trypsin. Serum proteins and albumin fractions are markedly reduced. Hemoglobin levels are especially reduced. This could be a serious complication leading to blindness and death. (Chetali Agrawal, 2000).

Dietary management for kwashiorkor concentrates mainly on providing a diet that is high in protein. Five grams of proteins/kg of body weight/day should be given for the existing weight. The calories derived from protein should be 10% of the total calculated calories per day if the main source is animal protein. If the main or the only source is from cereals and pulses, then the percentage of calories derived from protein can be 13 to 14% of the total calories because of the net protein utilization of cereals and pulses is around 60% whereas in milk or eggs, it is around 90%. Though vegetable proteins are as good as milk proteins in reversing the acute manifestation of kwashiorkor, they are inferior in their ability to promote regeneration of serum albumin. This can be overcome by giving 3 parts of vegetable protein to one part of animal protein like skim milk (Srilakshmi)

Dietary supplements containing proteins like whey and casein can be of benefit in malnourished subjects. Casein is a milk protein and has the ability to form a gel or clot in the stomach. The ability to form this clot makes it very efficient in nutrient supply. The clot is able to provide a sustained slow release of amino acids into the blood stream, sometimes lasting for several hours (Boirie et al., 1997)

Micellar casein is an extremely slow digesting and rich protein source that continues to feed the muscle (which is essential for kwashiorkor) long after whey protein has passed through the digestive system. In fact, studies with this under-rated form of isolated casein protein (Proc Natl. Acad Sci USA 1997) have demonstrated it to sustain steady amino acid elevation for an incredible seven hours. It was shown to offer a strong anti-catabolic effect not noticed with fast digesting whey protein, and actually fostered a much more positive overall net protein balance in comparison. Glutamine is the predominant amino acid in casein, which plays an important role in brain metabolism. Proline, aspartic, leucine, lysine and valine are also present. Casein is a good source of essential amino acids.

Whey proteins are made up of a-lacalbumin and ß-lactoglobulin (which defend against infection), albumin, the immunoglobulins, enzymes and protease, peptones. ß-lactoglobulin accounts for about 50% of total whey protein. They also contain small amounts of lactoferrin (iron, containing protein having protecting effect) and serum transferin (Srilakshmi, 1996).

Whey proteins provide the highest value of BCAA (Branched Chain amino acid). This is highly valued for muscle building–an essential requirement in kwashiorkor–and recovery. Whey proteins are the highest quality of proteins as they contain the best combination of amino acids as compared to proteins in dairy products, soy, vegetable, and even meat. Whey proteins also support the immune functions by increasing glutathione levels, thereby exhibiting antioxidants properties. Whey proteins contain many similar ingredients found in a mother’s milk. Other benefits of whey proteins include the fact that they are easily absorbed, which help in increasing lean muscle mass and helps fat loss.

It is necessary to maintain electrolyte balance in patients with Protein Energy Malnutrition. Vitamin and mineral supplementation must be given according to the physician’s advice. If vitamin A deficiency is present, oral administration of a single dose of 50,000 International Units (I.U.s) of fat-soluble vitamin A should be given immediately, followed by 5000 units daily. The deficiency symptoms will be cured in about two weeks. Anemia is most frequently encountered in people suffering from protein energy malnutrition. For the treatment of anemia, ferrous ammonium citrate (0.8g) should be given daily in the form of syrup in three divided doses for a period of one month. 100 mcg of Folic acid should be given daily (Srilakshmi).

Treatment strategy involves provision of adequate protein, provision of casein and whey protein supplementation, provision of vitamin and mineral supplementation, resolving life threatening conditions, restoring nutritional status without disruption of homeostasis ensuring nutritional rehabilitation. Criteria for improvement involves disappearance of mental apathy and edema, rise in serum albumin level and an increase in weight gain.

Toenail Fungus Remedies FAQ

Nail fungus infection is not life threatening but can cause social stigma and pain. Defirmed nails are embarrassing and serves as entry point for other infections. Curing the infection takes months, and treatments can be a hit or miss deal. Here are some basic facts about nail fungus and toenail fungus remedies as reference in finding the right cure.

  1. What is toenail fungus? And what types of toenail fungus are there? Toenail fungus or Onychomychosis is an infection that happens when the dermatophyte fungus invades the nail. This is not the same type that causes athlete's foot or jock itch although some dermatophytes and non-dermatophytes such as yeast and molds attack the nails as well, given the right circumstances. There are four classifications of toenail fungus, white superficial, distal or lateral subungual, proximal subungual and candidal. White superficial is caused by Trichophyton interdigitale fungus and attacks the surface of the nail. Distal or lateral subungual infection starts when the fungus moves from point of entry towards the center, traveling parallel from the sides or edges of the nail. This bug is caused by Trichophyton rubrum. Proximal subungual is a marker for those that are suspected of HIV infection, also by Trichophyton rubrum. This fungus enters through the proximal fold, near the cuticle of the nail. Lastly Candidal or yeast nail infection, nail damage through trauma or injury, yeast infections on other parts of the body and hands soaked in water for long periods are circumstances that yeast can invade the nail.
  2. What is scraping and debridement? How does it help against the infection? Scraping and degradation are procedures usually done by podiatrists, have two purposes. Scraping and degradation are done to expose and take out the infection as much as possible and serve as a specimen of fungus culture for laboratory testing. Cutting and filling down infected nail especially when it has thickened is almost the same as scraping and degrading with the purpose of exposing and getting rid of parts of the infection as much as possible for the nail to receive the toenail fungus remedies effectively.
  3. Why missing a treatment can lead to reinfection? Missing treatments may lead to reinfection because the fungus is hard to reach, not all of the fungus is eliminated at one time. Reinfection is possible when missing treatments due to the fact that fungal growth is constant as long as prevailing conditions are there. Toenail fungus remedies prevent these conditions from occurring, stop growth and kill the fungus in parts.
  4. How do I know the growing nail will not be infected? No one can tell, not even the doctors, if the growing nail will not be infected. The only solution to this is prevention, do not skip treatments; keep feet and nails clean and dry all the time; keep all items like towels, shoes and socks clean and dry; and avoid manicures or pedicures. Podiatrists believe that un-sanitized clippers or pushers are not the only culprits in spreading the infection but the whole cleaning process, example; pushing back the cuticles or cutting of the sides Leave the nails vulnerable to infection because fungi are spores are everywhere in the environment. Use natural toenail fungus remedies that preserves and condition the growing nail. These toenail fungus remedies contain essential oils that are proven to condition nails while eliminating the fungus.

7 Health Problems Connected With Obesity

Often people blame junk or processed foods for their obesity problem. If a person weighs more than 20% of the normal weight considering his/her height, then he/she is considered as an obese person.

However, you need to keep in mind that not every obese person would have all these health issues. Also, the risk of developing health issues increases, if someone in your family suffers from it.

Check out some health issues that are connected to obesity or overweight people.

1. Heart Problems

Excess fat can make an individual more inclined to have high BP and elevated levels of cholesterol. Both of these conditions are top reasons behind the occurrence of different types of heart problems or stroke. Fortunately, even losing a small amount of weight can decrease the odds of getting affected by heart problems or a stroke. You can lower the chances of heart issues by simply losing around 10% of your bodyweight.

2. Type 2 Diabetes

• Exercising regularly

• Sleeping adequately

If you already have Type 2 Diabetes, then you can control the levels of blood sugar by staying more active physically and by losing weight as well. More physically active means that you require less medication to control your diabetes.

3. Gallbladder Disease

If an individual is overweight, then the chances of getting a gallbladder infection and gallstones are higher. Unexpectedly, weight reduction itself, especially fast weight reduction or loss excessive weight, can make you more prone to getting affected from gallstones. However, you’ll be less likely to get gallstones if you lose weight around 1 or 2 kilograms per week.

4. Cancer

It’s quite shocking to know that different types of cancers that are connected with body parts such as colon, breast, kidney, endometrium, and esophagus are connected to obesity. A few examinations and researches have seen connections among cancers of the gallbladder, pancreas, ovaries, and with obesity problem.

5. Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a joint problem that affects the hip, back, or knee of the patient. Due to the excess weight, extra pressure is put on the joints, which damages the cartilage eventually. You can reduce the stress on your lower back, knees, and hips by simply choosing weight loss, which may also improve your osteoarthritis condition.

6. Gout

The joints of an individual are affected with this health condition. This problem occurs when there’s an excess amount of uric acid present in the blood, which eventually converts into crystal form that gets stored in the joints. You’ll be surprised to know that gout affects fat or obese more compared to healthy people. In fact, the chances of getting gout increase if a person is overweight. However, you need to consult your doctor if you already have gout and planning to lose weight.

7. Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is often the reason behind daytime drowsiness and increases the odds of stroke or heart problems. However, it has been seen the proper weight loss improves sleep apnea significantly.

The Importance of Preventing Chicken Pox

As a disease chicken pox is considered not to be very harmful to a healthy patient. Recent studies have shown that it is the leading death bridge compared to measurements, mumps, whooping cough and Haemophilus influenzae type B meningitis.

Some 14,000 people are admitted each year into hospitals for chickenpox, 60% of them being children. From 1000 individuals only only 5 require hospitalization, and in the worst cases this disease can prove to be fatal. The type of people witch are at the greatest risk of dying from this disease are actually adults, followed by infants, but from the 100 patients to die from chickenpox 40 were still children. A vaccine could have been used to prevent all of these, however recent studies have shown that the number of patients is the same in hospitals.

One of the good aspects of the disease is the fact that it actually gives immunity to the body making the chance of getting ill again from this very slim. Aside from itching a few rare complications may appear in patients.

20% of people who have had chicken-pox may later on in their lives suffer from a reactivation of shingles.

Itching, being the most common complication of the varicella infection, can be easily alleviated with some simple home made remedies.

Secondary Infection and Scarring may also appear; small scars usually remain after the falling of the scabs but this does not last long, the scars clearing up after a few month. In the case of itching there is an all other problem, Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria sometimes causing infection in the patient. Children are the most in danger of this kind of complication because of the simple fact that they are more likely to scratch. Also in children another rare complication would be year infection leading sometimes to hearing loss.

Bacterial Superinfection is the most common serious complication of chickenpox being caused by group A streptococcus. Although mild and not very dangerous its spreading to muscle, fat or even the blood can lead to life threatening situations such as the necrotizing fasciitis (the so-called flesh-eating bacteria) but this is still very rare. Persistent or repeating high fever, redness, pain, and swelling in the skin and in the tissue benefit and even pneumonia are some of the symptoms. In the case of pneumonia the most likely people to suffer complications are pregnant women, smokers, and those with serious medical conditions, serious complications appearing in some cases caused by varicella: lung scaring that makes the patient's breathing very difficult.

More complications would even be brain and central nervous system damage or even strokes, but as said they are extremely rare.

How to Stop Stammering

If learning how to stop stammering appeals to you, then this article is exactly what you have been looking for. Let me tell you, I know all too well what it's like to suffer from a stammer, otherwise known as a stutter in the UK. I had this issue for many years, and it can really affect your confidence, as well as a whole host of other things. In this article, you're going to learn exactly how to speak fluently, super quickly!

I guess for people who speak fluently, they just do not know what stammerers go through. To them, they look at a stammerer, and see someone who struggles with speaking. Well, I think this type of speech problem is like an iceberg. What everyone else sees is only a fraction of the problem. When I stuttered, my confidence was at rock bottom, and felt very unhappy with where I was in life.

I also used to shy away from large social gatherings, or places where I would have to speak a lot, or speak louder than normal, such as clubs. Often, I would simply decide to stay at home by myself, than go out and have fun partying with my friends, all because I was terrified of stuttering like crazy, and people looking at me like I was some sort of freak.

I hated living like that! I wanted to go out and enjoy myself, without the overwhelming fear hanging over me, ruining my fun. So I went on a mission to learn how to stop stammering once and for all.

One of the things I learned about how to stop stammering, was that the problems are often caused by a lack of confidence and self esteem issues. Well, I was not surprised as this was exactly what I was suffering with! So I knew I had to turn myself around here, but I wanted some techniques to improve my speaking straight away also.

That's when I learned this technique. Basically, in order to speak more fluently, you need to start talking slower, and move your mouth around a lot more. Exaggerate what you're saying with your lips. I often mumbled a lot while I was a stammerer, and this technique taught you to speak more clearly and fluently.

This was a great method to learn how to stop stammering, however I did not want to speak like this forever. I did not simply want to talk slower, I wanted to speak like everyone else!

The Secret to Chicken Pox Relief

So, there I was with two children covered in chicken pox. I felt grateful that they were both getting them over with while they were young, and nervous about my ability to treat them effectively on my own, without over the counter remedies.

This was definitely the most serious illness I had yet faced as an herbalist parent. How I wished for a chicken pox treatment page like the one I'm about to write, a page from another parent saying here's what I did, and it worked.

Luckily, my herbalist husband was on hand to remind me to trust the plants and to use the plants we know.

Chicken pox, we discovered, is a herpes related virus, so we chose St. Louis. John's Wort, as our primary healer, since we know it to be effective against herpes.

We brewed up teas for their baths – concoctions of St. John's Wort (dried leaves, stem and flowers), dried burdock root, and dried licorice root.

To make the concoctions we would put one large handful of each into a gallon of boiling water and simmer for 20 minutes.

Then strain out the herbs and add the tea to the bath water.

I would also fill a thin cloth bag with oats, calendula flowers and baking soda and put that into the bath. The kids would squeeze the oat milk onto their skin and even rub the bags over the irritated areas. These baths did wonders to relate the itching and calm the children. What a great herbal chicken pox treatment!

We also had the children drink the St. Paul. John's Wort, burdock and licorice tea as much as possible while they were broken out.

Still, we had times when the itching and burning was very uncomfortable and made sleeping especially difficult.

At these times, St. Johns Wort oil offered some relief. We did not come up with the perfect anti-itch formula, but have since learned that tea tree oil can provide amazing relief, and that chickweed poultices are effective for cooling and calming the itch.

We did try a mixture of baking soda and water and found it not only ineffective, but irritating to the children. This is actually a popular chicken pox treatment for some reason.

Hailey had the easier time with the chicken pox. At one year old, she did not get nearly as many as her six year old brother, and for the first few days was happy and playful and still practicing her walking.

She did get quite a few pox on her butt and genital area, probably because of the heat from her diaper. Then, just about the time that Rowan was beginning to feel better, Hailey got a fever and we not one of the pox on her leg where her diaper wrap was rubbing was very red and swollen.

We took her diaper off and began using poultices of calendula flowers and plantain leaves (crushed in a mortar and pestle with a little bit of water) directly on the pox. The swelling and redness went away by the end of the day and her fever was gone by morning.

We then used these poultices (attached with gauze and tape) on any of the more angry looking pox until they were cured.

Another worrisome occurrence that happened for us, was that Rowan sat up in bed near the middle of the night with his eyes wide open, yelling nonsense. It was a very unsettling experience for me as a mother, but after doing some research on the web, I found that it is not uncommon during chicken pox. I simply calmed him and he went back to sleep and woke a few minutes later with no memory of the episode.

The worst of the virus had passed within a period of about four days, and they were intense days for me. My suggestion to you is that if you call on whatever support system you have during this illness.

Find ways to get rest yourself, drink nourishing, calming teas, and rest assured that the remedies on this page worked for our family and that your children will get better given love and herbal nourishment. We hope our herbal chicken pox treatment works for you.

Craniosacral Therapy and Head Shaking Syndrome in Horses

I was out in Chesapeake the other day working on a gorgeous thoroughbred horse, a grandson of Secretariat, who had the unmistakable look of Nasrullah in his eye. He was well over 17 hands and put together nicely. He nearly walked over 3’6″ fences I was told. But, he was being plagued by a condition known as Head Shaking, which some have said is Trigeminal Neuralgia.

Headshaking syndrome in horses is a perplexing challenge. It is found all over the planet, I am told it is mostly seasonal, and afflicts mainly geldings who are over 10. Well, that would fit the bill perfectly for Charlie. It is characterized predominantly by vertical head tossing or flicking and muzzle irritation observed as rubbing on objects and sneezing but the cause is actually unknown.

If Charlie is suffering from Trigeminal neuralgia, then he may have to deal with sudden bursts of facial pain. The current opinion is now in favor of a neurovascular conflict: an artery that has an offending contact with the trigeminal nerve root.  Trigeminal neuralgia is diagnosed as having pain with distribution along one or more of the trigeminal nerves, the pain is sudden, intense, precipitated by triggers, has periods of remission, no neurological deficits and all other causes have been excluded. I worked with humans who have been afflicted by this condition and I can tell you there is a great deal of suffering.

There is an assumption now in the medical field that a horse that is suffering from head-shaking syndrome is having the same syndrome cluster-tic syndrome that my patients have. The good news is that one session of craniosacral therapy totally relieved Charlie of the syndrome. Now it may not “hold”. But, I believe we are on the right path. Consider craniosacral therapy for your horse. http://www.lyonsinstitute.com/equinemassage.html

Signs And Symptoms Of Low Blood Pressure And The Dangers

People often think of hypertension (high blood pressure) when blood pressure problems or issues are mentioned – they seem to forget that low blood pressure problems also exist.

The American Heart Association defines high blood pressure parameters being 140/90 and higher and normal as 135/85 and lower. The higher numerical reading is the systolic reading – the pressure required to pump blood through your arteries and the higher the number the less elastic your arterial system is. The lower numerical reading is the diastolic reading – the pressure remaining in your system between heart beats and is the number that affects your cardiovascular system the most. If the pressure remains high in your system even when your heart is at rest then there is greater risk of heart failure, kidney failure and stroke.

Likewise the diastolic reading is important in determining warning signs or problems. There is some disagreement about what numbers constitute low blood pressure – it is agreed that symptoms can be identified and some experts regard a reading lower than 90/60 as low. Only one of these numbers has to be low, for example, 115/50 is considered low as the diastolic reading of 50 is below 60.

It can be dangerous when there is a sudden drop in blood pressure. For example, a change of only 20 mm HG (systolic reading change from 130 to 110) may cause fainting or dizziness because not enough oxygen is received by the brain.

While high blood pressure is dangerous, low blood pressure also has dangers that impact negatively on a person’s health. Some low blood pressure sufferers are in great physical shape and have strong cardiovascular systems and experience symptoms because their cardiovascular systems and hearts are strong with arterial systems elasticity being flexible.

Low blood pressure can mean cardiovascular problems or may result by changing anti-hypertensive medications. Symptoms include lightheadedness, dizziness, blurred vision, rapid shallow breathing, clammy and cold skin, lack of concentration, thirst, nausea, fainting and fatigue. Some people suffer from Shy-Drager syndrome (neurological damage) after consuming a large meal which means a lot of blood is directed to the gastrointestinal system for digestion and even causes faulty brain signals. Other common reasons are medication side effects, pregnancy, dehydration, blood loss, infections and anemia.

The Reasons for Women to Get Tired Easily

It is easier for women to get tired than men. Many women are puzzled by such a kind of phenomenon. The reasons which cause the phenomenon are various. Generally speaking, seven reasons can force women to become tired easily.

The first reason is anemia. Anemia can decrease the hemoglobin which can send the oxygen absorbed by the lung from the outside to various parts of the human body. The adhesive oxygen supply for the body tissues can easily make people feel tired. During the menstruation or the delivery, it is easy for women to get anemia because of excessive blood loss. In addition, the lack of iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid can also cause anemia. If women are bothered by anemia, they should increase the intake of spinach and red meat. The complete treatment of anemia can significantly alleviate the symptoms of fatigue.

The second reason is unhealthy heart. If women always feel tired after they clean the house or some other kinds of work. Such a kind of symptom can remind women of the heart condition. The heart disease is also one of the main reasons of causing death. Women should go to hospital for health check regularly so as to find out and treat the disease in time.

The third reason is the infection of the urinary system. The infection of the urinary system can cause various symptoms of fatigue. In most cases, the infection is caused by the bacteria in the urinary tract. Women can take the medicine to deal with the infection and alleviate the fatigue effectively.

The fourth reason is the decreasing functions of the thyroid gland. The depression can seriously affect the functions of the thyroid gland. According to the research, various symptoms of fatigue are caused by the disorders of the thyroid gland. In order to resolve this problem, women can supplement relevant hormones to improve the functions of the thyroid gland and treat the fatigue.

The fifth reason is the excessive intake of caffeine . The excessive intake of caffeine causes cause fatigue. If women get tired, they must reduce the intake of coffee, tea and chocolate.

The sixth reason is the food hypersensitivity. Food can provide energy for the human body, but the food hypersensitivity can make people always get tired. Fatigue is the early symptom of food hypersensitivity. Women should decrease the intake of the food which they feel allergic.

The seventh reason is snoring. Snoring can disturb the sleep cycle and force people to feel weary. Women who always snore at night should moderately lose weight and stop smoking, or the risk of getting apoplexy can be increased.

The seven reasons mentioned above can easily make women become tired. In order to alleviate the symptoms of fatigue and keep healthy, women should form good life habits in everyday life.
