Health Benefits of Propolis

Propolis is a natural antibiotic that is fast gaining in popularity in the application of home remedies! It’s one of those bee products that really cause me to wow at the wonder of nature and marvel at the ability of the highly organised insect – honey bee. Now, let me tell you what exactly propolis is.

Some trees and conifers produce sticky resins as part of their immune system to defend themselves against disease. Honey bees collect these substances that ooze from the buds of these plants. After chewing them and mixing them with their saliva and other substances, propolis is formed. This nutrient-rich substance is of vital importance for the survival of the honey bees in the beehive. It is created to sterilize the hive and protect it against diseases and infection. Not only does it help to inhibit the spread of bacteria, virus, and fungi that would otherwise pose a significant threat in the closely-knit quarters, it also and help fight against climatic changes, such as wind and cold. It is also used as a “putty” to seal cracks and openings in the hive and to strengthen and repair honeycombs, and for this reason is also known as ‘bee glue’. Another fact that amazes me is that honey bees also use this sticky substance to embalm or “mummify” the carcasses of larger insects that invade the hive. Such intruders are immediately stung to death but because the defending bees can’t transport such heavy corpse away from the hive, they embalm them rather than allowing them to decay. The ancient Eygptians observed this and used propolis as one of the embalming agents for their exquisite mummies!

Propolis contains approximately 50-70% resins, 30% wax, 10% etheric oils and 5% pollen. It is especially rich in amino acids, important for immune system function. It has a high vitamin content (Vitamin A (carotene), Vitamin B1, B2, B3, biotin) and is extremely rich in bioflavonoids (Vitamin P) which are believed to have numerous immune building properties and health benefits. Bioflavonoids are the natural pigments in fruits and vegetables and are found in abundance in oranges. This bee glue contains almost 500 times more bioflavonoids than is found in oranges! It also contains an array of albumin, calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus. Like Royal Jelly and Bee Pollen, it contains a number of unidentified compounds which work together synergistically to create a balanced, nutritive substance.

Propolis can be purchased completely raw and unprocessed, but it in its natural state is a sticky substance and is very difficult to handle. Some beekeepers will package the raw propolis and freeze it in small portions. It can then be added to a coffee grinder in its frozen state and ground for easy consumption. Most producers utilize a process where the active ingredients are ‘leached’ into water or alcohol, then either packaged in liquid form or dried and capsulated.

Because of its antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, this precious substance has been used as a healing agent for many centuries. It has the ability to provide protection against infectious invaders, promote healing and regeneration of tissue, and provides a superior source of energy and stamina. It has been used as ointments for healing cuts and wounds and shown to have outstanding value for a wide variety of illnesses. It is also used as a natural alternative to penicillin and other antibiotics. It is said to be particularly safe and effective and inhibits the resistance-building effect that is a negative factor with prescription antibiotics. In the former Eastern Bloc countries, antibiotics have never been widely available, but beekeeping is widely practised. To help prevent many diseases, hospitals and clinics recommended washing, gargling or irrigating the sinuses with propolis rinses, as well as taking propolis internally. This bee product is certainly a good weapon against bacteria when used topically. It can clearly prevent infections, and can also help heal infections that have already begun.

Do you know that now even toothpastes contain natural ingredients related to honey bees. Propolis has become a healthy alternative to synthetic brands of toothpastes as it is especially useful in mouth and gum disorders. Our mouth is one of the most sensitive spots of our body. This is the place where the synesthesia of senses starts and the food we visualize develops its full smell and taste. The mouth is the starting point of the food digestion. A healthy mouth cavity is certainly one of the elements contributing to the appetite and good mood in general. If the mouth develops sore spots, thrush or gum disease, it causes the whole system to disrupt, resulting in pain and tormenting feeling. Published clinical research demonstrates that propolis fights bacteria, prevents tooth decay, enhances oral hygiene, heals bleeding gums, and prevents gums receding. Manufacturers of propolis toothpastes and mouth sprays claim that their products leave teeth clean, gums feeling healthy, taste great without artificial ingredients, and produce no negative side effects. The salesperson at a honey shop which I often frequent explained that propolis toothpaste are very suitable for young children’s use as even if it’s accidentally swallowed, it’s extremely safe. Such products are easily applied, and have increasingly become part of the everyday dental hygiene of people who are especially interested in natural remedies. My latest discovery while shopping for honey products : propolis extract now even comes in the form of sprays and candies. The spray claims that it is effective against flu, cuts, burns, gum and mouth infections, throat discomforsts and intestinal discomfort, while the candy is sold as a good therapeutic substitute to the traditional throat lozenges and an aid to curing flu, colds, throat discomfort, cough and bad breath.

Note of Caution: Propolis is generally non-toxic, though allergic reactions such as skin rashes, swelling, redness, eczema or fever have been reported. As the effects of propolis during pregnancy and breast-feeding have not been sufficiently evaluated, women should not use it during these times unless directed to do so by a physician.

The Three Types of Female Alopecia

Alopecia is the medical terminology used to describe hair loss. It is an especially disturbing condition in women, since it is less publicized and socially accepted than male alopecia. There are three major types of female alopecia: androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata and Telogen Effluvium.

The most common type of female alopecia is androgenetic alopecia, which is when women have thinning or diffuse hair loss at the top of the head while keeping their front bangs. What happens in this particular type of female alopecia is that hair follicles become sensitive to hormones and there before the follicles produce less hair. The growing cycle of the hair is shortened and, because of this, the production of hair moves slower (and can, at some point, stop in the area).

Causes for androgenetic alopecia are commonly hormonal. While it is not a single cause, stress can aggravate this type of female alopecia. Androgenetic alopecia by definition means related to hormones and genetics, since there seems to be some pattern of heredity (although this is widely disputed). The most common treatments are the popular Rogaine, Tricomin Therapy Spray and Nizoral. Also, antiandrogens are popular among those concretely diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia rather than any other kind of female alopecia. These drugs reverse the actions of the hormones in the body and can help stop hair loss.

When alopecia in women presents with patchy hair loss it is called alopecia areata. Aside from the hairless patches, this type also has "exclamation point hairs" that narrow closer to the scalp, hence the name. This type of hair loss can happen quickly or slowly. Alopecia areata happens due to inflammation of the hair follicles which then lose their supply of nutrients and therefore go into the shedding stage prematurely.

Causes of alopecia areata are mostly unknown, but it is thought generally that this female alopecia subtype is caused by stress, allergies, infection, genetics, poisoning by environmental exposure to toxins or trauma. The treatment for mild cases includes corticosteroid injections and treatment for intensive cases including topical contact sensitization therapy (chemical creams that may reverse the process). There is also an ointment called Anthralin. It is important to mention that it is rare for this specific type of female alopecia to be reversed.

The third and most typically harmless variation of female alopecia is telogen effluvium which is rapid, but temporary hair loss. It can get dangerous, however, when telogen effluvium triggers another subtype that lay dormant in the body and ends up being a permanent condition. With telogen effluvium, instead of the usual loss of 100 hairs per day, it can go up to 400 lost daily. Apart from hair loss, telogen effluvium can also be accompanied by pain in the scalp similar to the pain of hair being ripped out (this is called trichodynia).

Telogen effluvium usually happens because of stress, illness, recent childbirth or crash dieting. The causes for this alopecia in women can be divided into physiologic, injury / stress and drugs. Physiologic causes include postpartum hair loss, which is a natural condition. Typical stress factors include eating disorders, nutrient deficiencies, recent surgery or illness, infection or just plain stress. Drugs that are commonly associated with temporary female alopecia are anticoagulants, anticonvulsants, heavy metals, birth control pills, thyroid medications and antikeratinazing agents. Treatment of usually involves removing the underlying cause for the temporary hair loss which should solve the problem.

It is important to understand that female alopecia is a versatile condition with many types with different symptoms and causes for each one. Going to a doctor for a solid diagnosis is advisable and female alopecia is usually treatable with the affected female being able to lead on a healthy and normal life.

Why Diabetic Wounds Heal Very Poorly

Diabetes is one condition no one would ever wish to experience. A lot of people fear this condition than the dreaded acquired immune deficiency syndrome. It comes with many complications that keep the patients uncomfortable if proper management is not put in place. It is more pronounced in parts of the world that has poor health facilities. One of the complications is the tendency of wounds of diabetic patients to heal slowly and poorly.

Diabetics are usually advised to protect themselves particularly the feet from injury. This is because, their wounds heal very poor. The poor wound healing also has biological causes. There are basic biological phenomena that take place before a wound heals. One of the major processes involved in wound healing is the formation of a network of fibrin across the wound surface.

With the formation of this fibrin network, the wound starts looking dry while other healing processes continue under it. Regrettably, excess sugar in the blood as seen in diabetics, prevents or breaks down the formation of this fibrin network necessary for healing. By preventing or breaking down already formed fibrin network, it makes wound healing difficult.

Frequent infection (germ invading the wound) also decrees the chances of healing. It is based on this understanding that priority is given to controlling the sugar level in a diabetic patient, then making efforts to get the wound to heal quickly.

Diabetes sufferers stand to face an increased risk for neuropathy and nerve damage. This affects the sensory and automatic nerves.

To put the problem of diabetes to a reasonable level, if not cured entirely, below are helpful tips:

o Dietary management. Dietary measures are required in the treatment of all diabetic patients in order to achieve the overall therapeutic goal.

o Endeavor to exercise yourself as much as possible.

o Then grab the much talked about DIABETES CONTROL MADE EASY . A 100% safe, natural, and effective ways you can manage and even fully recover from your diabetes in as little as 90 days … and so that you never have to take insulin again, or have to suffer painfully even once again!

State Of Environmental Health In Uganda – A Community Psychologist's Perspective

Health and environment are linked. In fact, most people prefer using the phrase environmental health to have the union of the two. The union intends to show how influences of human health could come from changes in the environment.

But, within environmental health, there are other issues, like poverty, population, organic farming, environmental politics, environmental health accounting, environmental health protection and environmental stress (from humans and climatic changes). In other words, it would simply mean external factors that potentially affect health.

The environmental health continues to be under serious threat from; ever increasing population that encroach it, lack of concern from both communities and their leaders, multinational firms' scaling up of pesticide and chemical use in agriculture, and degradation of the environment -without moral conscience.

Use of chemicals is said to be highly destructive not only to weeds and pests but also to humans. Apart from losing the natural taste of food, eating food crops sprayed with chemicals, even after several hours of cooking, could soon have it set in vital organs of the body -as lungs and liver. And thereafter, lifespan of humans and animals could be lowered.

Unfortunately, suppliers of such destructive drugs are big corporate firms -that are capable of bribing off influential African leaders, employing huge numbers of people and investing heavily in advertisements. As such, it would be so easy to shut people's mouths -majority of who are beneficiaries, not to complain or advocate otherwise.

Yet, just looking at organic farming, which uses natural solutions to agricultural problems, it is something that is environmentally friendly-meaning that whatever constituent of the environment is not harmed. Rather, people practicing it co-exist with an understanding of the knowledge of sustainability in resource utilization.

Communities, in this case, are mindful of paying back to the environment from which they find food -with no pollutants, and ensuring that natural resources regenerate. There is, therefore, mutual benefit, unlike in scenarios -where use of pesticides, bush-burning and huge de-forestation for arable land is the mentality. Organic products are natural and in line with the similar natural needs of the body.

And products are what consumers could be willing to pay more for in order to safeguard life. The practice of farming is itself gentle to the earth – where both compliment each other in terms of soil conservation, conservation of vegetative cover and ensuring sustainability.

Pressure on land has forced many to migrate into game and forest reserves, and thus, catapulting into aggravated de-forestation, and extinction of rare species of both animals and plants. In south west Busoga forest reserve, in Mayuge District, it is now history that there used to be buffalos and hippopotamuses in the area.

It is a place with most violent panga-yielding encroachers ever known in Uganda. They can go as far as attacking tree-planters, cutting down artificial plantation, and even uprooting of newly planted trees.

Such grave environment degradation is what in turn adds to the already existing threat of global warming, adverse affecting ecological balances, leading to natural punishments (natural disasters), and creating conditions for disease causing germs as well as immunological disturbances.

Encroachment is a key critical issue, but governments in Africa are passive about dealing with the problem. Instead, they focus more on political goals. Politics is usually mixed with serious environmental health concerns. In Uganda, the problem, mainly, is with the forest resource.

For wild life, it is well able to quell off encroachers -according to reports by forest officials in Uganda. There is a kind of discrimination in regard to forest land protection, as would be compared to resources like oil and wild life.

With many of them being immigrants from other regions of the Uganda, the reason they (encroachers) give is lack of land for food production, where denial of forest or animal park land would mean starvation to death. In fighting to live, they are willing to be shot down.
But independent observers say encroachers are runaway criminals, who ended up in forests. And those in the forest think justice can hardly be processed to the very end, which gives them a feeling of personal safety.

The passage of local leaders has not generated action against encroachers-since they are voters capable of helping regimes in Africa stay in power. Governments, therefore, find it a delicate issue to handle. Instead, they choose to keep a blind eye as the environment is massively degraded.

While family planning would be an excellent strategy to combat growing population, the conservative lives of most Africans do not give room to the practice. Education too is out of reach for the majority of the populations around game and forest reserves -realizing that such areas tend to be remote.

The remoteness implications total absence of schools as much as the value of education. Yet, In line with education, going to school is said to discourage high birth rate and living without planning for the future. Some areas like Mayuge District have mainly junior level schools and parents value less the idea of sending children to school.

Parents think educating children is a waste of money, and that in the first place, it is hard to get. While at the same time their forest life is unpredictable -since they believe government would at one time expel them. So, surviving day by day is all they look at. Neverheadless, older men would always be on the look out for breastfeeding-pointing young girls to devour sexually. As a Consequence, many drop out before joining secondary schools.

There is public health concerns in the face of high population growth -with pressure on utilities and irresponsible behavior in handling of community resources. People in such areas, as game and forest reserves -hardly care about hygiene and sanitation. Instead, the reserves act toilets or latrines.

And because they lack clean water, they frequently "host" water-borne diseases. Worse still, inaccessibility to reproductive health services makes them prey to HIVAIDS and other STIs / STDs. Where would you find condoms while in such areas?

The implications here are; improper disposal of waste materials, early sexual intercourse and rural prostitution around town centers. Further, in such areas, sexual intercourse is like taking a cup of tea -this time round, in Western Europe context, where anytime is believed to be tea time.

Besides, lack of proper nutrition, lack of well trained personnel, and engineered lack of drugs put local residences more at the risk of dying from the mainly water-borne, sexually transmitted infections and other simple infections -that else would be treated.

Since health services are inaccessible, local residents resort to traditional medicine. Rarely would you walk in rural areas without meeting a kind of "Dr" Rashid Lukwago clinic that fill gaps where modern medicine has failed to reach. However, with integrated health service delivery system, traditional medicine and modern are one, although standards need to be set for the former.

People, there, are at compliance level. They have very little or nothing to sale so that money is generated to buy medical drugs. Herbal medicine, therefore, becomes the most appropriate to them.

Interestingly, people claim herbs have been more effective at curing serious illnesses than modern medicine. No wonder, recent health strategy called for a twin approach to treatment of diseases.

Much as the lucky urban and semi-urban areas would be found with decent health care facilities, patients find no drugs in them. What is thought to be free treatment at government health centers is never so. At best they would offer blood testing and prescription. The patient, then, plays the last role of going to the pharmaceutical shop find drugs.

Perhaps, it is cost-sharing at work that government introduced in early stages of its rule. But, remember, people are poor. If unable to buy medicinal drugs, and when traditional herbs fail, they could succumb to death.

The health sector happens to be one of the most infested government departments with acts of corruption. As a remedy, liberalization of the economy in general and health sector particularly in this case, sounded as though the answer.

However, doing so, well, helped to improve on services offered. On the other hand, only the rich could afford. The poor, as usual, were left out -and only had to pray that they do not fall sick and get close to their creator.

Not very long ago, health ministers were implicated for misuse of global funds for prevention and treatment of malaria and HIV / AIDS. As the lords where busy feasting and driving posh cars around, AIDS patients were dying. Sincerely, where are the hearts in the Uganda's political players?

Unfortunately, belief in witchcraft is another problem in such areas. Any strange incident could call for a witch-doctor's consultation or referral to culturalorms. It was not surprising; therefore, when finds by butabika hospital showed that majority of people in Uganda preferred traditional healers or faith-based prayers to health centers -as curative.

Meanwhile, the same cultural ideas could be so entrenched that changing attitudes might pose a challenge. Development pace could be slow or even static-since people find it "impossible" to think beyond simple cultural excuses. Actually, witchcraft, being at the center of cultural practices, plays roles of what science would be purposed for.

Without encouraging people to take their children to school such young people post-pone marriage, it would always be hard to control infections and diseases as much as to change their attitudes towards the mainly useless cultural beliefs.

Useless cultures could have adverse connections to almost everything in life -be it with health service promotion, proper agricultural practices and viable leadership or managerial options. All could suffer under wrong mentalities.

More so, as the saying goes, "educate a woman, educate the nation." The saying, just as from; different research findings on gender, experiences and the statistical occurrence of child abuse and neglect cases, educated men would tend to act more irresponsibly on matters of child development than educated women.

There could be a difference between good orderliness of a family of an educated mother and one -who is uneducated. Education, which is understandably, the high intellectual state and tangible resourcefulness of a person-long after he or she has left school, could help scale down incidences of child abuse and neglect.

Upon this background, prospective parents must go or return to school not just to attend classes, but to learn. Having done so, the future could have environmentally caring and patriotic generation.

The Wound That Never Heals

I'm nursing an almost fatal wound. In fact, I'm surprised that I'm still here, still nursing it and feeling it slowly scab over, only to have it ripped open and the healing process begin again.

The wound is over 6 years old now and by my reckoning (and many others') it should have been well healed with no visible scars by now. It is not natural for a wound to take so long to heal. I've been told in cases of people suffering from diabetic ulcers or even from cancer, that wounds from those illnesses can, and quite often do, take a long time before they're healed.

But this wound is different. This wound cuts deep into our emotional and physical well-being. This wound is, in fact, far deeper than any ulcer and longer lasting than any other wound. This wound is non-healing. I know this now.

The scabs that form, I've come to learn, are just temporary. I know that at any moment they can be yanked off of me, ripped away with all the strength of a Kodiak bear's jaws. The pain is intense and long-lasting.

I can be engaged in conversation with you and some innocent remark on your part can set the ripping process in motion. And you will not even know it. You will be looking at me, completely unaware that the scab has either just been yanked away or is slowly peeling away, revealing inner and deer layers of hurt and pain, until finally I am absent, with no strength to carry on. I must escape to some place, any place where I can scream from the pain, cry and vent without you or anyone else knowing how I'm feeling – because you would not understand.

Without you have suffered the same deep, penetrating wound, you would be clueless as to the depth of this pain. And I would not have it any other way. As has been said many times in many circumstances, "I would not wish this on my worst enemy."

My wound occurred in the wee early hours of the morning on December 2nd, 2002, when two police detectives arrived at my front door with their cutting, slashing words, stabbing me so deep in my heart that I almost fell to the ground.

"He passed away at 10:30." My son, my baby. Dead at the age of 31 years, 4 months, and 3 days … and not just dead, but dead from a drug overdose! The double whammy!

My son, the Paramedic and RN who was caring, compassionate, kind and loving. Now gone from my life forever. But the scab is not gone. It stays here on my heart waiting for a word, an event, some trigger to rip it off again. Even writing this account of his death is causing the scab to begin peeling away, with the pain intensifying and I am brought to my knees again by it.

I am compelled to continue writing about it though. Addiction was my son's disease, it was not the essence of his life. We must keep writing and talking about addiction because its effects are far reaching. Everyone knows someone who has addiction in their family or circle of friends or acquaints. There is no escaping it today.

Until we eradicate the stigma of a drug-related death and as long as we keep their addiction in the closet, many addicted people will fear speaking up and admitting they are struggling with addiction. We can not let this continue to happen. As much as it hurts, and as painful as it is to have that scab continuously ripped away, we have to keep on speaking out. We have to advocate for our kids. For every parent who has suffered this almost fatal wound, there are many more parents who sadly will join our ranks, who will hear those fateful words – your child passed away!

Boo Hoo, The Flu – Top Three Homeopathic Remedies For the Flu

Are you worried about the flu? You need not be. Get yourself set with the remedies best suited to this year's flu season with the top three homeopathic remedies. If you're already attuned to the way homeopathy works, you know that each person reacts to a flu in a different way and that often this requires different remedies for each person. However, I'll let you in a secret that experienced homeopaths know. That is, once the flu season begins, there are often only one or two that seem to present for many people. Have them on hand and you and your family will be covered.

The most common remedy for people on the go is Nux vomica 30. It covers the first set of symptoms of chills especially down the back, exhaustion, and that beat up feeling from achy joints. Take it immediately every 3-4 hours and be sure to get sleep and plenty of water, bone stock, freshly made orange juice or raw milk. Staying hydrated is key. Sometimes this person experiences gastro intestinal discomforts and it is likely that if the above cluster of symptoms presents, Nux vomica will resolve the illness within a day or two. Stay away from over the counter meds, as they prolong the illness in the long run.

If the weather is warm and then turns cold, such as in the fall or spring or the person is warm and then steps out into the cold air, the shock of the cold can soon bring a cold or flu. In this case, the best remedy is Dulcamara 30 taken the same as for Nux vomica. And interestingly, if these remedies work well, it is likely the same remedy will be correct for other family members and people in daily close contact.

When the flu comes on with extreme exhaustion as the main symptom, consider Gelsemium. This is the remedy used by the infamous homeopathic doctors of the 1918 flu epidemic. Records indicated that those under the care of homeopaths had survival rates that greatly exceeded those under the care of doctors who had nothing in their bags.

With this method, it is best to take the remedy as soon as possible after the first symptoms appear. The longer you wait, the longer it can take to recover, since the illness has progressed. Get ready, have your remedies and good chicken stock at hand and prepare for a short duration of illness when you use the most intelligent medicine on the earth – Homeopathy .

Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment for Alopecia (Baldness)

Alopecia or baldness is hair loss usually noted with respect to the scalp of both men and women. While generalized hair loss is known as alopecia, small and circular bald patches are termed as alopecia areata. Noticeable hair loss and the resulting premature baldness can be psychologically very disturbing, since a luxuriant hair growth on the scalp is considered a sign of good health, grooming and personality. Premature hair loss is usually caused due to a genetic tendency, chronic diseases, medications, stress, injury or damage to the hair, and as a side-effect of strong treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy. While actual baldness is more apparent in men, severe hair loss and apparent thinning of hair is more common in women; however, both types of hair loss can prove to be devastating for affected individuals.

Treating baldness or hair loss constitutes a booming medical industry, and various treatments for this condition have emerged, which include allopathic and alternative medications, local scalp treatments using laser therapy, shampoos and conditioners, as well as specialized treatments like wigs and hair grafting. Medicated oils for treating hair loss are available at all chemists over-the-counter, with new medical preparations being added regularly.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for alopecia is a systematic process of looking for the cause of the condition and giving comprehensive treatment for it. A careful history is important in order to identify and treat specific causes such as chronic diseases and the use of specific drugs or harmful treatments. It is best to avoid any known cause for the condition, if possible. Anxiety, stress, a harmful lifestyle, and improper nutrition to the hair roots are usually the commonest causes of premature hair loss in men and women.

Ayurvedic treatment can be given as a combination of oral medication and local applications. Oral medication involves the use of medicines which can treat the known causes for the condition. In addition, medicines which have a specific action on the scalp as well as the hair roots are also important in the management of this condition. These medicines improve the blood supply to the hair roots and thereby provide better nutrition to the scalp, while at the same time removing toxins and unwanted elements from this area. These medicines also provide stimulation to the hair roots so as to help regenerate new hair and prevent hair loss.

Oral medication is usually supplemented with local application in the form of medicated ointments, pastes, and oils which have to be applied regularly so as to provide good results. Local applications not only provide nutrition for hair roots but also treat skin inflammation, infection and dandruff, and thereby reduce the tendency for hair fall. Regular massage with medicated oils not only aids in hair regrowth but also relaxes the scalp and neck muscles and induces good sleep.

It is equally important to give herbal medicines to treat stress and anxiety which are important factors which continue to propagate severe hair fall. It should also be remembered that the rate of regrowth of hair should be much more than the rate of hair fall in order to prevent noticeable hair loss and baldness. Most individuals affected with this condition require regular treatment for 6-9 months in order to get significant benefit from Ayurvedic treatment.

Swine Flu Precautionary and Prevention Steps

WHO authorities have benefited from the previous bout of H5N1 virus (Avian flu) by way of being prepared to combat the current strain of the Swine flu. Countries have developed better strategies of suppressing the spread of the virus, such as limiting public gatherings, airport thermal-screening of passengers arriving from selected countries and the temporary closing of schools. Several airlines have upgraded their air filters and sanitizing methods and are more diligent in changing used blankets, pillow and headsets.

In some countries, health officials are taking into consideration launching more extreme measures such as health screening in schools, kindergartens and institutions of higher learning. To date, airport screenings (including obtaining throats swabs from passengers from infected countries) have proved to be helpful. Those who display flu-like symptoms are advised not to shake hands and to wear a mask to minimize the risk of transmitting the virus.

Treatments

The current drug used for treating the Swine flu virus is Relenza. Health authorities in infected countries are advised to use these drugs to treat only the hospitalized and seriously ill to avoid a case of short supply. Vaccination is one of the best methods to protect people from getting infected by the regular influenza virus. Currently, WHO has requested for the production of a seasonal Swine flu vaccine, similar to other mass-produced seasonal vaccines. Since it has taken such a short time to declare the Swine flu a pandemic, WHO will now be pressured to switch the current production of a seasonal vaccine to a pandemic vaccine, even if halting the seasonal vaccine immediately would not enable the swift manufacturing of the pandemic vaccine.

Further Prevention

1. Reduce travel to infected countries.

2. Wash hands frequently with soap and water, or alcohol-based hand sanitizers.

3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

4. Keep surfaces on chairs, tables, wall and floors (including bed linens, kitchen utensils and counters) in all
rooms in your home spotless and sterile.

5. Toys should be disinfected regularly with a mild and effective detergent, which will not cause any skin
reactions or allergies.

6. Improve ventilation of frequently used rooms.

7. Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing and coughing using a tissue or other disposable materials. After
immediately disposing the materials, wash hands with water and soap or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

8. Masks should cover both mouth and nose and should leave no gaps between the mask and face. Do not re-use masks and wash your hands every time a mask is discarded.

9. Keep food clean and separate raw and cooked food. Food should be cooked thoroughly. Keep food at safe
temperatures. Use safe and clean water on raw ingredients.

If you follow the precautionary and prevention steps give, you should minimize the risk of being infected by Swine flu.

7 Health Problems Connected With Obesity

Often people blame junk or processed foods for their obesity problem. If a person weighs more than 20% of the normal weight considering his/her height, then he/she is considered as an obese person.

However, you need to keep in mind that not every obese person would have all these health issues. Also, the risk of developing health issues increases, if someone in your family suffers from it.

Check out some health issues that are connected to obesity or overweight people.

1. Heart Problems

Excess fat can make an individual more inclined to have high BP and elevated levels of cholesterol. Both of these conditions are top reasons behind the occurrence of different types of heart problems or stroke. Fortunately, even losing a small amount of weight can decrease the odds of getting affected by heart problems or a stroke. You can lower the chances of heart issues by simply losing around 10% of your bodyweight.

2. Type 2 Diabetes

The majority of people who get affected by Type 2 diabetes suffer from obesity. You can take various steps to reduce the odds of getting affected by Type 2 diabetes, such as,

Injections in the Ear Drum to Treat Sudden Deafness

There have been ongoing debating as to whether Intra-Tympanic Steroid Injections would have been the most effective medical intervention in treating Sudden Hearing Loss or if the widely practiced evidence-based medical management of oral steroids would have been a safer choice.

The answer lies on the cause of the hearing loss and the personal preference of the person experiencing the problem. Treating hearing loss is not only limited to different ways of administering steroidal therapy but there are also medical interventions that focus on the root cause of the hearing loss. It is important to determine the predisposing factors of the loss of this sense to prevent progress and worse, complete hearing loss.

Before treating a hearing problem should even be considered, the diagnosis has to be determined by a physician, preferably specializing in the affected area which is the ear. Sudden hearing loss is often described as the decrease of the sense of hearing in a short period of time, occurring in a span of 72 hours or less. This may commonly be mistaken for dullness of the ear due to the common cold and is unilateral or occurs only in one ear. Oral or subjective complaints for patients experiencing the condition sudden hearing loss would include dizziness or nausea, feeling that their world is upside-down and that there is ringing heard in the ears, known as tinnitus.

Having laboratory exams done immediately could provide the accurate medical diagnosis and more often than not, predict the patient's diagnosis. Findings would indicate that there has been a sensorinural hearing loss which when calculated would exceed 30 decibels over 3 contiguous pure-tone frequencies within a 3 day period. Time is of the essence to treat this medical condition since the onset is rapid and the condition deteriorates quickly when left untreated.

Once the diagnosis is established, figuring out the cause can help in treating sudden hearing loss. The exact cause is yet unknown but the pathophysiology of this condition can be traced to:

  • Recent viral infection.
  • Compromise in the body's vascular system.
  • Rupture of the intra-cochlear membrane .
  • Inner ear diseases, which are immune-related.

Pharmacological Interventions include the newly introduced Intra-Tympanic Steroid Injection. In administrating this Intra-Tympanic Steroid Injection, the preparation is introduced through oral drops or injected through a tiny gauged needle directly to the eardrum. This method has been said to create faster results and restoration of the sense of hearing due to the route of administration. It is said that the potency of the Intra-Tympanic Steroid Injection is increased because it is introduced directly to the affected area.

Special consideration should be given to the patient since this procedure is considered painful and a diversion of some sort might be planned. There is a great risk though that the eardrum might be perforated, so most patients would not have this treatment. The cost of this drug should also be considered since Intra-Tympanic Steroid Injections are expensive.

Oral steroids, such as Prednisone, on the other hand are the drug of choice for many doctors.Ãï½Â Ãï½Â In Treating Sudden Hearing Loss in one ear, this treatment has been administered to many patients known to have suffered the disorder. The less invasive the administration is, the less risk for infection it poses. Long term therapies include monitoring blood pressure and blood sugar levels since oral steroids cause hypertension and increase in blood sugar. Antiviral drugs can also be given in treating hearing loss caused by viral infection and anti-vertigo can be given to bouts of dizziness or loss of balance.

Getting Help For Ringing Ears With Lipoflavonoid

People always ask if there is a cure for Tinnitus. Tinnitus, or commonly known as ringing of the ears, makes sufferers hear many different sounds like hissing, buzzing, clicking, swishing, booming, and ringing. It is caused by the dislocation, damaged or infection of the cochlear canal or part of the middle ear which stabilizes the entrance of air and balances pressure inside our brain.

Drug companies along with medical scientists have long been engaged in coming up with products that can reverse the effect of Tinnitus. They have been quite successful but not enough to bring back normal hearing to some sufferers. Fortunately, there are alternative nutritional supplements such as Lipoflavonoid that can help in the treatment of tinnitus and also in repairing damaged parts of the inner ear. They are actually health supplements in the form of multi-vitamins that can increase circulation of blood and nutrients to the inner ear.

Lipoflavonoid is derived from the pigments of citrus specifically lemon fruits. Pharmaceutical companies fortify this with Vitamin C for healing effect and other minerals and vitamins to help damaged tissues enhanced healing. It contains ingredients such as hesperidin, eriocitrin, naringen, naringenin, flavonols, and flavones and all these are antioxidant ingredients that can enhance body resistance. You can find many lipoflavonoids on the internet today bearing different brands. But it is suggested that you must stick with the natural ones.

Lipoflavonoid was first formulated and introduced at one of the recognized medical Midwest centers in 1961. Doctors and researchers have discovered that lipoflavonoid can really help improve the circulatory system of the inner ear particularly ears of people who are suffering from Meniere’s disease. This disease is characterized by vertigo, deafness or ringing of ears. Since then, doctors recommend this nutritional formulation to patients suffering from this disease.

Today, capsules of lipoflavonoid contain Vitamin C, Vitamin B complex, niacin, panthothenic acid, choline, bioflavonoids with erioditryol glycoside and inositol. This fortification makes this multi-vitamin complete and more powerful in alleviating symptoms as well as an effective aid in the treatment of Tinnitus.

Upper Respiratory Infection Pathophysiology – Manifestation and Remedy

Upper respiratory infection, or URI, is an acute illness also known as the common cold. It is most often due to a bacterial or viral invasion of the body, that enters through the respiratory system.

Pathophysiology:

URIs characteristically attack the mucosal lining the upper respiratory airway. It is spread by coming into contact with secretions from an infected person, or by the water droplet nuclei produced when a person coughs or sneezes into the environment. This is why covering your mouth when coughing, and covering the face when sneezing is important to prevent the spread of upper respiratory infections to others.

Once a pathogen enters the body, it must overcome particular barriers before causing disease. These barriers include:

– Nose hair

– Mucus

– Cells with cilia located in the lower part of the respiratory tract

– Stomach acids

The purpose of these barriers is to trap the foreign invaders to reduce your chances of getting a cold or the flu. The cells in the lower respiratory tract have cilia that capture and bring pathogens to the pharynx, where they can be swallowed and taken to the stomach where they can be destroyed by digestive juices in the stomach.

Your adenoids and tonsils:

The adenoids and tonsils help to defend against disease causing pathogens due to their immune cells that respond to foreign invaders. These cells include: Macrophages, Monocytes, Neutrophils and Eosinophils.

The general scope of nasopharyngeal passage that comprises of staph and strept even defend from pathogens. People with defective immunity, like AIDS, are in grave danger of contagion factor as their immunity is found grossly deficient.

In return, pathogens are equipped to struggle. Through genesis of toxins and proteases, and by creating capsules, they manage to keep choking of phagocytic cells at bay.

Incubation periods vary among the types of pathogens. Rhinoviruses and flu can take up to 5 days to incubate. Others, such as pertussis and take up to 10 days or as long as three weeks before symptoms present themselves. Epstein-Barr incubation period can be up to 6 weeks.

What kinds of symptoms are witnessed during upper respiratory infection?

People who have never suffered from URIor upper respiratory infection are affected by following manifestations:

– Runny nose

– Head congestion – Feels like there is a hug cork jammed into the middle of your face

– Nasal congestion – Caused by swollen nasal passages that have slammed completely shut

– Chest congestion – Bronchial airways clogged with mucus

– Coughing

– Sneezing

– Sore, scratchy throat

– Hoarseness

– Fever

Treatment:

Treatment for URI is to reduce symptoms. Most colds and flu are caused by viruses, against which antibiotics have no power. Antibiotics work against bacterial infections only. If you have a URI, there are over-the-counter medications for cough, runny nose, congestion, and fever to help minimize symptoms and help you to feel better.

Vaccinations – 5 Vaccinations Everyone Should Have

Any disease that can ravage and kill a population is one that we should do everything we can to prevent. Unfortunately, we often do not do it until after the damage is done … if even then. Here are a few of the diseases you may want to protect yourself against. Many diseases are harder on adults than on children.

1) Measles : There are several risk factors if you contract measles. One you may not have thought of is blindness. This disease can rob you of vision, even if you take the precaution of not using them while you are ill. The best hope for preventing much damage is to stay in a dimly lit room without television, books or any other visual means of amusement, usually for quite some time. The second risk factor is worse … it can kill you.

2) Rubella : This is also called German measles and three day measles, though the two are not related. It is usually a mild disease, a slight rash and a touch of fever being the main symptoms. The problem is catching it during pregnancy. If it is done during pregnancy … especially the first trimester … it can cause miscarriage and serious birth defects. It is also very easily transmitted.

3) Polio : I may be a bit premature in suggesting you update your polio vaccines, but I have good reasons. Several areas, including parts of Eastern Europe and Africa are having serious problems with the disease. Those areas are a long way from the US, but all it takes is one or two people on an airplane under the right circumstances and that problem will be transmitted to us. This is such a devastating disease, getting protection is a small price to pay.

4) Tetanus : This disease has become so rare in the US that many doctors have never seen a case. This makes diagnosis difficult and often too late. While it typically is transmitted by something causing a puncture wound, that wound may not be noticed … once again until it is too late.

5) Whooping Cough : This disease is easier on adults and older children who catch it, but it is by no means a picnic even then. The cough comes from deep in the lungs and can make the muscles in the area very tender.

What's worse is if an infant catches it. They are not strong enough for the intense coughing episodes and die painfully within a short time of catching it. It is considered epidemiological in several states, and protecting our children should be an imperative.

There is good news. You do not have to have five shots to be protected, just two. TDAP will cover tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough and the MMR will cover measles, mumps and rubella. Talk to your doctor about these immunizations and ask if there are others recommended in your area. It is much better to be safe than sorry.
