How to Prevent Glaucoma

Our eyes are greatly ignored, because they are very important organs for our human beings. Generally, receiving eye examinations is very effective to detect some potential eye problems. But most of us have failed to do this. Therefore, many eye diseases became worsened when they are diagnosed.

Most of us seldom pay any attention to our eyes till they become sick. However, those problems can always not be easily inspected when detected, though we go to visit eye doctors.

For example, the damage caused by glaucoma is not reversible and sufferers may become blind. But if it can be detected at its early stage and treated properly, suffers' vision can be saved. In a word, prevention is much more effective than cure and receiving regular eye examinations is essential.

We can always enjoy the brightness of good vision even when we get eaten if we can take care of our eyes. Receiving Regular eye examination is one of the best preventive methods. It is a bad habit to neglect eye care and visit the eye doctor until the problems get worsened.

In most cases, some symptoms can tell the existence of particular eye diseases. However, some disease will show no such symptoms. For example, sufferers of glaucoma can seldom detect any symptom until their vision gets lost completely.

If those diseases can be detected at early stage, they can be cured successfully. And examination is one of the best to detect any potential diseases. Of course, physical examinations are also needed if we want to maintain good vision.

Could Swine Flu Affect Our Pets?

All birds and mammals can be infected with a form of influenza virus, of which there are three types (A, B and C). Humans can be infected by forms of all three, but most flu varieties in animals and humans that cause serious health concerns are Influenza Type A. Viruses can mutate rapidly, and because hosts' immune systems do not initially protect against new mutations, new strains can subsequently cause widespread infection. Often new strains result from the spread of an existing flu virus from one species to another, which provides the virus with the necessary tools to transmit between members of a different species to it's usual host.

Swine Flu

The latest flu strain to hit the headlines (H1N1) – commonly known as "Swine Flu" is a strain of Influenza Type A. While the normal version of "Swine Flu" causes outbreaks of influenza with low mortality rates in pigs, the strain which is currently causing human deaths is not the same virus. The new strain combines genes from human, pig, and bird flu and is similar to the strain that caused "Spanish Flu", responsible for a human pandemic in 1918. "Swine Flu" is an entirely different virus to the "Bird Flu" which was widely talked about last year, and among the most important differences is that "Bird Flu" infected humans who had direct contact with infected birds, where as "Swine Flu" is being transmitted from human to human.

Flu in Horses

Influenza is widespread in horses and is believed to have a nearly 100% infection rate in unvaccinated populations. Flu in horses is primarily caused by the H7N7 and H3N8 strains. In 2007, an outbreak caused the Sydney Races in Australia to be suspended.

Flu in Cats

An avian strain (H5N1) of Influenza Type A, which was given the popular name "Bird Flu", had until recently posed the greatest risk for a new pandemic pandemic since it first killed humans in Asia in the 1990s, but it did not mutate into a form that spreads easily among people. H5N1 is unusual in being deadly to many species, including domestic cats which were never previously susceptible to any influenza virus. Aside from when infected with H5N1, the term "Feline Flu" does not actually refer to infection by influencing, but instead generally refers to the symptoms of an upper respiratory tract infection. Because cats have little exposure to influenza viruses, any case of flu which was able to transmit between humans or dogs and cats would probably lead to a widespread infection, since cats have no natural immunity to any influenza virus.

Flu in Dogs

Type A Influenza viruses also include equine influenza (H3N8), which in 2004 was discovered to be responsible for Canine Influenza. Because of the lack of previous exposure to this virus, dogs have no natural immunity to this virus.

Flu in Pigs

Although this new influence is being called "Swine Flu," it is being spread from person to person, not from pigs to people. None of the infected humans in North America have had contact with pigs, and no pigs in North America have been found to be infected with this strain. Pet pigs are there before not known to be able to contract the strain of "Swine Flu" which is being talked about in the news, however they are able to contract normal "Swine Flu", which does not normally have any more serious consequences than seasonal flu does for humans.

Conclusions

In general, influenza viruses are not transmitted from one species to another. For example, dogs and cat do not develop flu after exposure to owners with a seasonal flu virus. While it is theoretically possible for a new influenza strain to be visible between humans and other domestic animals, it is likely that such a strain would be transmissible between only humans and one other animal. Because the "Swine Flu" virus contains genetic elements of human, pig and avian flu viruses, it would seem very unquestionably that this strain would have the ability to infect hosts which are not humans, pigs or birds. And, according to the American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA), "there is no evidence that pets are susceptible to this new strain of influenza; it appears to be transmitted solely from person to person".

Stroke Rehab

In the US around 70,000 people suffer a Stroke each year. Rehab is crucial to help the victims of Strokes cope with the effects of a Stroke and recover to a normal and healthy life.

How well a patient recovers from a Stroke depends on many factors. Minimizing brain damage during the Stroke will make Rehab faster and more effective. Rehab can not cure the Stroke but can help in long-term recovery of the aftereffects of brain damage.

The first step would be to diagnose a Stroke. A number of tests may be done on the patient to diagnose the type of Stroke so that the professionals can determine a treatment and rehab plan. This includes blood pressure, blood sampling, X-ray, ECG, Echocardiogram, brain scans such as MRI and CT scans, and Carotid Ultrasound scanning.

After the diagnosis the medical treatment begins. During a Stroke brain tissue is damaged by blood clots (ischemic stroke) and / or internal bleeding (hemorrhagic stroke). Various drug treatments must be started immediately to treat this condition. If used soon enough, they can help prevent damage to the brain.

These include-Anti-platelet drugs, such as aspirin, to prevent clotting, anti-coagulant drugs, cholesterol lowering drugs, and antihypertensive drugs. Some patients may go in for surgical procedures like stenting to clear the clogs and reduce the intensity of the Stroke.

Rehabilitation therapy begins in the emergency care hospital within 24-48 hours after the Stroke, once the patient has stabilized. Rehabilitation of Stroke victims is a difficult and time-consuming task. It helps the Stroke survivors to relearn skills that are lost by brain damage during the Stroke.

It also teaches new skills to make up for any disabilities and to practice and relearn communication, memory, and voluntary and physical skills. Commonly people have a surge of recovery in the weeks following the Stroke, followed by a slower recovery in the next year or so.

Stroke can cause five types of disabilities: Paralysis, problems controlling movement, sensory disorders including pain, problems using or understanding language, and emotional distortions.

Paralysis is the most common result of Stroke. It causes problems of movement, posture and swallowing. Left-brain damage causes right-limb paralysis. Stroke victims may also experience sensory problems like pain, numbness and loss of feeling. Some may have aphasia, problems using or understanding language. People with Global aphasia may lose all their linguistic abilities.

Stroke can also cause damage to the parts of the brain related to memory, learning and awareness. Some also experience some emotional trauma involving fear, anxiety, frustration and suicidal thoughts.

During the Rehabilitation process, doctors are responsible for the long-term care of the Stroke survivors, including neurologists who look after acute care and physiatrists who look after the Rehab program. Physical therapists help patients with mobility issues like walking, climbing stairs and maintaining balance. Occupational therapists teach them daily living activities like feeding, grooming and using the toilet. Speech therapists help with language skills and swallowing problems. Rehab nurses care for the patient and educate the family concerning how to care for them. Social workers help Stroke survivors and their families with counseling and community resources.

Stroke is a serious disease, rendering the survivor in a weak and deficient position. The need for aftercare and Rehab is high, as the aftereffects of a Stroke are numerous and interfere with normal life function in an unmanageable way. It is only with the help of this team of doctors, nurses and therapists that the patient can be rehabilitated.

The Three Types of Female Alopecia

Alopecia is the medical terminology used to describe hair loss. It is an especially disturbing condition in women, since it is less publicized and socially accepted than male alopecia. There are three major types of female alopecia: androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata and Telogen Effluvium.

The most common type of female alopecia is androgenetic alopecia, which is when women have thinning or diffuse hair loss at the top of the head while keeping their front bangs. What happens in this particular type of female alopecia is that hair follicles become sensitive to hormones and there before the follicles produce less hair. The growing cycle of the hair is shortened and, because of this, the production of hair moves slower (and can, at some point, stop in the area).

Causes for androgenetic alopecia are commonly hormonal. While it is not a single cause, stress can aggravate this type of female alopecia. Androgenetic alopecia by definition means related to hormones and genetics, since there seems to be some pattern of heredity (although this is widely disputed). The most common treatments are the popular Rogaine, Tricomin Therapy Spray and Nizoral. Also, antiandrogens are popular among those concretely diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia rather than any other kind of female alopecia. These drugs reverse the actions of the hormones in the body and can help stop hair loss.

When alopecia in women presents with patchy hair loss it is called alopecia areata. Aside from the hairless patches, this type also has "exclamation point hairs" that narrow closer to the scalp, hence the name. This type of hair loss can happen quickly or slowly. Alopecia areata happens due to inflammation of the hair follicles which then lose their supply of nutrients and therefore go into the shedding stage prematurely.

Causes of alopecia areata are mostly unknown, but it is thought generally that this female alopecia subtype is caused by stress, allergies, infection, genetics, poisoning by environmental exposure to toxins or trauma. The treatment for mild cases includes corticosteroid injections and treatment for intensive cases including topical contact sensitization therapy (chemical creams that may reverse the process). There is also an ointment called Anthralin. It is important to mention that it is rare for this specific type of female alopecia to be reversed.

The third and most typically harmless variation of female alopecia is telogen effluvium which is rapid, but temporary hair loss. It can get dangerous, however, when telogen effluvium triggers another subtype that lay dormant in the body and ends up being a permanent condition. With telogen effluvium, instead of the usual loss of 100 hairs per day, it can go up to 400 lost daily. Apart from hair loss, telogen effluvium can also be accompanied by pain in the scalp similar to the pain of hair being ripped out (this is called trichodynia).

Telogen effluvium usually happens because of stress, illness, recent childbirth or crash dieting. The causes for this alopecia in women can be divided into physiologic, injury / stress and drugs. Physiologic causes include postpartum hair loss, which is a natural condition. Typical stress factors include eating disorders, nutrient deficiencies, recent surgery or illness, infection or just plain stress. Drugs that are commonly associated with temporary female alopecia are anticoagulants, anticonvulsants, heavy metals, birth control pills, thyroid medications and antikeratinazing agents. Treatment of usually involves removing the underlying cause for the temporary hair loss which should solve the problem.

It is important to understand that female alopecia is a versatile condition with many types with different symptoms and causes for each one. Going to a doctor for a solid diagnosis is advisable and female alopecia is usually treatable with the affected female being able to lead on a healthy and normal life.

Beating The Odds Of Developing Glaucoma – With All Natural Approaches

Glaucoma is a potentially, and very serious, threatening eye disease that can rob you of your ability to see. It is often called the ‘sneak thief’ of vision for a valid reason. For many people, years often pass with no noticeable affects of having glaucoma before a vision loss is finally noticed.

Glaucoma is a frightening eye disease that slowly, methodically, and inconspicuously damages the optic nerve, the main cable from the eye to the brain, that allows you to see.

Suddenly, a very precious gift, your eyesight, has been stolen. And, unfortunately, as in the case of glaucoma, there is no way to restore it again. This is an eye disease that is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in the world.

It is estimated that nearly 67 million people worldwide are affected by this dangerous eye disease, and this is projected to exceed 80 million in the next 10 to 15 years. In the United States, according to ‘Prevent Blindness America’, more than 3 million people have glaucoma, and only half of them are even aware of it.

A recent survey conducted by the ‘Lions Club’, about 75 percent of glaucoma patients surveyed were not aware that their vision loss was a result of glaucoma until it was diagnosed by their doctors.

There are two main types of glaucoma, acute or closed-angle, and primary open-angle, both have similar symptoms. General symptoms that can be noticed are; loss of side vision, reduction of over-all vision, poor night vision, eye pressure pain, and a frequent need to upgrade or change eyeglass lens prescriptions.

Although this eye condition can occur in people with normal eye pressure, elevated eye pressure is the main risk factor signaling a glaucoma warning. This eye disease, however, appears to be more complicated than just having an elevated eye pressure alone.

The most common type of glaucoma is primary open-angle. It is usually detected early in a person’s life, somewhere between the late 20’s and early 30’s. Those who wear eyeglasses, or contacts, usually schedule regular eye exams to determine if there is a need to change their prescription lenses. But, individuals who do not wear vision correction eye wear in their younger years may be those who are susceptible, over age 40, for developing this disease unawares.

There is also two other common causes of vision impairment, or loss, in those over 40, age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. Reducing your risks of ever developing any of these three eye diseases, in the first place, can greatly be reduced with better lifestyle choices and healthier eating habits

Currently, the only widely accepted conventional treatment for lowering elevated eye pressure is with prescription eye drops. You will, most likely, not get any sort of objective information from your eye doctor on any other types of natural intervention options, as chemical drug treatments are all they have ever been taught to administer.

Age seems to be the single most important risk factor, out of many, for getting any of the three eye conditions mentioned above. Eye muscles, though, are no different than other muscles throughout your body, as they really do not just wear out prematurely. In all probability, they most likely begin to sag from lack of use, and a lack of regular proper daily nutrition. Processed foods, and sedentary lifestyles equals sagging muscle tone and poor muscle posture.

This is just as relevant to eye muscles, as well as other muscles throughout the entire body, in that the end results are limited vision capabilities.

Improving your body’s daily dietary nutritional requirements, and adding regular physical fitness lifestyle changes are very beneficial to maintaining optimal eye health. Other natural alternative tools like eye muscle exercises and managing stress are proven techniques you can begin implementing now, to strengthen your vision in the near future.

You can protect, strengthen, and maintain your eye vision with improved lifestyle habits such as,

1. Reduce or eliminate your use of unhealthy polyunsaturated vegetable oils

2. Include a limited use of monounsaturated oils (olive oil), increase saturated fats (coconut oil),
and increase omega-3 essential fatty acids (fish, flax, walnuts)

3. Increase antioxidant intakes with more fresh, raw, fruits and vegetables

4. Avoid all processed foods containing MSG preparations

5. Reduce or eliminate refined sugars, grains, and artificial sweeteners (big sight stealers)

6. Lead an active lifestyle, regular physical exercise lowers your risk by 70 percent of developing any type of degenerative eye condition

7. Increase your pure water intake, along with small amounts of unrefined salt, making water three-fourths of what you drink everyday

This last lifestyle tip helps lower blood pressure naturally, too. Although there is no conclusive evidence that links high blood pressure to glaucoma, those who do have this tendency to develop this eye condition, have a 30 percent likelihood of having high blood pressure as well.

In an excerpt from “Your Body’s Many Cries For Water”, by Dr. F. Batmanghelidj M.D., page 75, Dr. B. states, “It so happens, if we do not drink sufficient water, the only other way the body has to secure water is through the mechanism of keeping sodium (salt) in the body. Thus, keeping sodium in the body is a last resort way of retaining some water for it’s ‘shower head’ filtered use”.

Therefore, it makes a reasonable amount of sense, at least to me, that glaucoma, or the increased eye pressure associated with it, could be noticeably reduced with proper water and salt intakes.

A dear friend of mine, who has not developed full-blown glaucoma yet, and has not yet resorted to prescription eye drop treatment, has successfully lowered his eye pressure levels, just by increasing his daily water intake, and adding unrefined salt to his daily diet Even his eye doctor was pleasantly surprised, and so was my friend, with a lowered eye pressure reading. Imagine the implications of making only one dietary change, here. What are the possibilities of adding a few other natural alternatives to further compliment one another?

These strategies may, also, work well for you too, my friend, if you have been searching for more natural ways to lower your eye pressure readings. Certainly, it will not hurt to give any of them try.

Hopefully there are some natural tips you can use, here, that will help some of you gain more control in improving one of life’s most precious gifts, your eye sight!

Causes of Toenail Fungus and Fingernail Fungus

Nail fungus is unsightly, difficult to treat and difficult to prevent.

This frustrates many people and leads them to taking the toxic drug Lamisil.

Learn what causes nail fungus:

* Trauma: when a nail is hit against something, the nail lifts from the nail bed allowing fungus to creep under the nail and set in. If the nail is protected immediately after, fungus may be prevented. Ask your doctor how to prevent bacteria and fungi from getting under your nail bed. Salt water soaks, hydrogen peroxide, betadine, gentian violet all may help. However, be careful as these can be contraindicated with certain types of trauma – especially severa trauma. Ask your doctor.

* Environment: when a nail is exposed to wet areas, high humidity, warm temperatures, or alkaline environment [high pH], this sets up the opportune spot for fungus to set in. Create a dry, breathable and acidic environment. Vegetarians are more prone to fungus as their diet is highly alkaline. Soap is alkaline forming but it is also anti-bacterial so what to do there? Skin is supposedly to be slightly acidic so use moisturizers that promote that. Moor mud moisturizers provide an acidic pH. Use all cotton or all wool socks as these breathe well. Avoid synthetic socks which do not wick water away from your feet.

* Weak immune function: if the immune system is not functioning strongly, it can not fight local infections such as fungus. Support the immune system with proper diet, rest, exercise and supplements.

* Poor blood circulation: without proper blood flow to an area, the immune system can not get there. Then fungus can set it. Also poor blood flow leads to poor nail nutrition allowing the nail bed to be traumatized more easily – trauma may lead to nail fungus. Exercise, dress appropriately and consider contrast showers. They warm you up and increase circulation.

These are some of the major causes of nail fungus. Read our other articles explaining how to treat nail fungus naturally.

What’s Behind the Ear Infection Epidemic in Children?

Frequent ear infections in infants and children are as common as colds that not only create great discomfort for the child, but may cause permanent hearing loss. They are often treated with round after round of antibiotics. Unfortunately, while this antidote seems to manage the problem, it often doesn’t seek to find the real cause behind the infection in the first place.

Many people do not know that ear infections are often caused by acid reflux. As refluxed liquid enters the upper throat, especially while lying down, it can inflame the adenoids causing them to swell. The swollen adenoids can block the passages from the sinuses and Eustachian tube and fluid can build in the sinuses and middle ear.

As acid reflux is also epidemic in our entire population–how can we connect the dots between both ear infections and this digestive disorder? How can we find what’s behind both of these problems and reach a true solution?

The first thing to understand is that acid reflux is most often the result of an abnormal overgrowth of Candida, or yeast, in the stomach, when the PH of the stomach is low. This causes digestion to slow down and foods to ferment. The Candida also attaches itself to the muscles of the esophageal sphincter causing them to become paralyzed. In reflux, the pressure of the fermentation gases push the acid up through the weakened esophageal sphincter muscles into the throat.

Today, acid reflux is so prevalent because people are no longer eating foods that support good digestion and healthy bacterial flora. Historically, people consumed a wealth of cultured and lacto-fermented drinks like kefir and yogurt from whole raw milk, beet kvass and kombucha, and cultured vegetables like homemade sauerkraut, pickled beets and Kimchee. These high-enzyme, probiotic foods kept yeast and other bacteria in check as well as helped to maintain proper stomach acidity and gut flora–all necessary for good digestion.

Gut flora is passed on to a child during its passage in birth through the birth canal. When the mother has poor gut flora, the child will inherit the same problem and suffer the health consequences of poor digestion and a tendency towards both acid reflux and frequent ear infections because of this deficiency. Therefore, through a familial inheritance, poor health is passed on to the next generation.

As Hippocrates said, “All disease begins in the gut,” we can see that both ear infections and acid reflux and also many of our epidemic health problems must be coming from a lack of foods necessary to promote good digestion. We must return to eating the high-enzyme, probiotic rich foods that our ancestors ate and remove the difficult-to-digest modern breads, crackers, processed foods and sugar that can cause a Candida overgrowth. We can also benefit from adding nutrient-dense, old-fashioned foods like bone broth soups and meats, poultry, eggs and dairy from pastured animals as well as wild-caught fish in place of the foods that upset normal digestion.

Treating the symptoms of ear infections with antibiotics is like trying to bail the water from a sinking ship, one bucket at a time! When we work towards solving the reason behind our epidemics, we will insure the future of the health of generations to come.

Cure Ear Infections Using These Natural Remedies

The official medical term for ear infection is otitis media. The word otitis means inflammation and media means middle, as the infection occurs in the middle ear. Children and babies are more likely to suffer from ear infections than adults. More often than not it should clear up on its on in just a few days.

What Are The Causes of Ear Infection?

Ear infections are more common in babies and youngger children because the Eustachian tubes (the narrow passage way that connects the middle ear to the nose) are narrower than an adult or older child's and, therefore, is easily blocked by fluid in the ear. They are also most likely to occur during a cold.

The swelling of the adenoids is another cause. The adenoids are located in the upper throat near the Eustachian tubes. When the adenoids become infected they become enlarged causing blockage of the Eustachian tubes which can cause infection.

Because the immune systems of small children and babies are not fully developed, they are more susceptible to ear infections.

Children exposed to cigarette smoke or other pollutants are at higher risk as well.

It is possible that cold air may also be a factor as ear infections occur more frequently in winter.

A cause for recurrent ear infections that may be overlooked is the medications given to your child for ear infections, colds and flues, such as aspirin, decongestants, Tylenol, antibiotics or other drugs.

Another cause may be airborne and food allergies.

Ear Infection Natural Cures

Colloidal Silver – Colloidal silver is a natural antibiotic and can be used both internally and externally. You can put one drop of colloidal silver in the ear twice a day, in the morning and in the evening. You may notice improvement in just one hour. If you want to use colloidal silver internally, just follow the instructions on the bottle. It is also available as a spray and can be sprayed into the nostrils to clear up the nasal passes.

Tea Tree Oil – You will need to use warm tea tree oil and olive oil. Put five to ten drops of tea tree oil into a tablespoon of olive oil and mix. Using a dropper put 2 to 3 drops in the infected ear twice a day.

Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) – Buy grapefruit seed extract in liquid form. Put 3-5 drops of GSE in 1 oz. of glycerin or alcohol or both and stir well. Put 1-2 drops in the infected ear 1-2 times daily. Absolutely do not use GSE full strength in the ears as it is too strong.

Boosting the immune system will also help in stopping ear infections from recycling.

Helpful Diet and Lifestyle Changes

Avoid processed or packaged foods. Feed your child a healthy diet with lots of whole foods such as vegetables, fruits, eggs, whole grains, meat, etc.

Healthy fats such as flax seed oil, primrose oil, olive oil, borage seed oil, fish oil, coconut oil and organic butter boost the immune system and improve overall health. Absolutely stay away from hydrogenated oils found in deep fried foods, margarine, vegetable oils, peanut oil and soybean oil.

Your child's diet should be as sugar free as possible. Various studies have shown that sugar suppress the immune system significantly.

Find out if your child has any food allergies and remove them from their diet.

Keep your child away from cigarette smoke and other air pollutants such as air fresheners and chemically based perfumes, colognes, cleaning supplies, etc.

Most ear infections will heal by themselves and do not usually need antibiotics, but here are some warning signs you should watch out for: a high fever, stiff neck, listlessness and abnormal mental function. Take your child to a doctor immediately if you notice any of these symptoms.

Toenail Fungus Treatments

Tea tree oil is re-discovery as one of the best toenail fungus treatments. This oil is safe to use on any condition.

It's medicinal properties makes it a strong bacteria and virus fighter and therefore also boosts the immune system. Tea tree has been tested extensively for its effectiveness as a disinfectant against bacteria and has proven itself to be worthy.

In a recent study, tea tree oil was tested for use for several different things ranging from a ingredient toenail fungus treatments to a treatment for candida. It was tested on 26 strains of various skin organizations, 54 yeasts, as well as 22 different other strains of fungi and it inhibited the growth of all of them.

A healthy nail blend for toenail fungus treatments would include Oregano, Tea Tree and other authentic essential oils that have been proven to kill fungus. If you have ever struggled with candida, you would know that it can be very difficult to eradicate.

Fortunately there are some essential oils that can help eliminate nail fungus with none of the dangerous side effects seen in numerous medications.

ZetaClear is a blend which are ready-to-use, already mixed with oils in proportions of the highest efficiency. This is also not a harsh treatment unlike some toenail fungus treatments. You should start to notice the growth of a new nail, growing out pink and healthy again.

Fungal infections of the skin and nails is one of the most difficult of all disorders to cure. A few of the toenail fungus treatments on the market may be effective in eradicating nail fungus, but have the potential of causing significant toxicity, including liver damage.

Tea Tree and Oregano oils found in ZetaClear aids in eradicating fungus primarily through topical application. These oils have a deep penetrating power, which aids in the destruction of nail fungus, since the nail fungus infects the surface, as well as the root of the nail bed.

Differential Diagnosis of Gout – What Causes The Joint Pain?

The differential diagnosis of patients presenting with joint pain is extensive, ranging from mild sprain, joint dislocation, trauma, malignancy, infection, and some life-threatening autoimmune diseases.

Joint pains that caused by physical activities are very obvious and easy to be diagnosed. Examples of this kind of injury are sprained ankle, joint separation, ligament sprain, torn cartilage and torn cartilage. Typically, this kind of pain is immediate and the patient can vividly remember the physical activity that causes the pain at the joint. These kinds of traumatic condition can happen to people of all ages.

Other causes of joint paint that usually affect people of older age are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the result of mechanical degradation of the joints due the years or wear and tear. It usually happens to those who were physically active during their younger years, such as sportsman or those who work in hard labor jobs.

One the other hand, rheumatoid arthritis is a form of autoimmune disease where the abnormal immune system attacks the tissues around the joints and causes inflammation and pain. The actual cause of rheumatoid arthritis is still unknown, some say it is because of viral or bacterial infections, some say it is because of genetically inherited abnormalities. Extensive researchers are still taking place around the world to find out the answer to this mysterious illness that affects a huge number of elderly population.

Although these 2 types of arthritis have very different causes, but they share certain similar symptoms that make them easy to be ruled out in the differential diagnosis of gout. Both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis typically develop the pain over a long period of time and they usually affect joints of both sides of the body such as in the feet, hands. These kinds of arthritis usually attack multiple joints at the same time and the pain develops gradually.

Another more common cause of joint pain in the modern day is gouty arthritis which is more commonly known as gout . Gout attack is a type of inflammation that is caused by the formation of urate crystals inside a particular joint due to long term exposure to hyperuricemia. Many times, gout is mistaken as one of the above mention arthritis conditions, especially when the patient get the gout attack for the very first time.

Differential diagnosis of gout is very straight forward and easy, here are some of the unique properties of gout that differentiate it from other causes of joint inflammation.

  • Sudden occurrence of intense pain
  • The attack starts in the middle of the night when the victim is sleeping
  • It usually attacks one side of the joints
  • 90% of the gout attacks happen at big toe
  • If blood test is conducted, it typically shows a high blood serum uric acid level that is beyond healthy range

Although Gout is easy to be diagnosed, but it is not easy to get rid this awful devil. Those gout drugs and pain killers can only temporarily control the gouty infection, none of them can remove the root cause of gout, which is the urate crystal.

It is commonly known among the gout patients that gout pain is the worst and most unbearable pain in their life. Instead of wasting your money on those expensive tests involved in the differential diagnosis of gout, you should spend some time to understand the actual cause of gout and remove the root once and for all.

Nobel Peace Prize Winner Makes the Kind of Difference All of Us Can Be Part Of

Peace Prize winner

The surprise choice of this year's Nobel Peace Prize, Bangladesh Professor Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank, applied a simple idea and are making a huge difference in the world. By offering small loans to poverty-stricken entrepreneurs in third-world countries, Professor Yunus is providing the means for free enterprise to begin to transform communities and historically nations. In particular, women are benefitting from the availability of micro-credit. Now banks and other institutions elsewhere in the world are starting similar programs modeled on Grameen Bank's initiatives.

In an interview just after learning he won, Professor Yunus said this:
… [P] overty in the world is an artificial creation. It does not belong to human civilization, and we can change that, we can make people come out of poverty and have the real state of affairs. So the only thing we have to do is to redesign our institutions and policies, and there will be no people who will be suffering from poverty …. People come out of poverty every day. So it's right in front of us what happens and it can be done globally, it can be done more forcefully, we can organize more things to go with it, so this is something not theoretical issue, it's a very real issue …. We did not do anything special; lend money to the people so – but they never lent it to the poor people – all we did was lent it to the poor people, and that makes the trick. That makes the change.

(You can get the interview in text or audio at the Nobel website.)

The amazing difference between this strategy and all the failures of the past is that here is someone taking a proactive approach to the seemingly intractable problems surrounding him. His motives are not alt altistic; His bank is actually turning a profit.

Why can not the rest of the world take a lesson from Professor Yunus and either adopt or adapt his strategy? When we do, an amazing societal metamorphosis is possible.

The Proactive Messiah

The Lord Jesus Christ took a similar approach when He "went around doing good" (Acts 10:38). He invested in people, communicating to them that they had value and tremendous potential. He convinced them that He believed in them and that He was willing to sacrifice for their benefit.

As His Follower, Accept His Challenge!

Jesus challenges His followers to do the same in their world. "Give to the one who asks something of you, and do not turn away from the one who would borrow from you. … That you may be sons of your Father in heaven. good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous "(Matthew 5:42, 45).

Your investment need not be money. The person you meet may only need a moment's attention, eye contact, an open smile, a friendly conversation, a ride of a few blocks, or directions in an unfamiliar part of town. You have the opportunity to communicate that you care, that you think he or she has worth as a human being, that you do not view them as an "untouchable."

As they respond to your kindness, warm up to your proffered friendship, it's time to confess Christ. In simple ways that are not abrasive, you can let them know that you follow Jesus, and that makes all the difference in your life. It's because of Him that you see hope – hope for our world and hope for them. Because He has invested in you, you are willing to invest in them.

Be proactive – make a change for the better in the world around you.

Want to go deeper?

Palestine of the first century was filled with beggars. These needy people were constantly asking for money and seeking other assistance. Jesus certainly had the power to wave His hand and heal them all in an instant. Why did not He? Because He had a higher purpose.

He was not content to cure paralysis of the limbs and blindness of the eyes. His intention was to reach down into the soul and bringing healing to a paralysis of the will and blindness of the heart. He did not have to touch people to heal them; He proved that on occasion. His touch was therapeutic on a degree level more than just eradicating disease and deformity. It communicated love, acceptance, and esteem in an awesome, life-changing way.

Do you own study of these passes: cleansing a leper – Mark 4: 40-45; healing a deaf mute – Mark 7: 31-37; blessing the children – Matthew 19: 13-15; and healing two blind men – Matthew 20: 29-34.

Look also at the times when He bought and / or accepted help from someone. What did this communicate? Are we merely patronizing people, or do we see them as our companions in life's journey?

Take a look at these accidents: asking for a drink – John 4: 4-42; asking for a place to stay in a strange town – Luke 19: 1-10; accepting a gift of gratitude from a friend – John 12: 1-8. Read also Paul's command in Romans 12: 14-20, and ask yourself, "What would the world be like if we made this our lifestyle?"

Benefits of Home Health Care

Some patients with an illness or injury do not wish to receive assistance from caregivers in a professional setting. In contrast, these people wish to have practitioners visit them at their residences instead. Explore some of the benefits of home health care to determine whether this service fits your needs and budget.

Personalized Service

When caregivers come to a patient in the home, this assistance is typically more personalized and specialized to meet the unique needs of the patient. People usually receive a higher quality of service delivered in a more compassionate manner. It's common for relationships to develop between the patient and the staff members who visit regularly.

Convenience

Receiving visits from staff members in a residence is usually more convenient for both patients and families. Leaving the home to visit a facility will no longer be necessary because practitioners will come to the residence at times that fit the individual's schedule. This convenience can be particularly helpful during times of inclement weather when a patient should not venture outdoors due to cold, heat, or storms.

Help for Family Members

Family members caring for a sick or injured loved one usually experience significant time constraints because of this work. Hiring a company for home health care can reduce this burden for family members. The assistance provided can give family members more freedom to manage their own personal duties. With the reduced responsibility, families often begin to have more quality time with the person because they no longer become stressed over care duties. Family members often recognize knowing that their loved one is receiving high-quality and professional care, which can less personal anxiety.

Promotes Healing

When people receive home health care, they may recover more quickly. In addition, people may receive dangerous exposure to germs and infections when visiting clinics and hospitals. The ability to have assistance at home can eliminate this exposure and promote faster healing. Many people even experience a reduced number of re-hospitalizations under this type of regimen.

Affordability

Inpatient care can be expensive for a family. The cost of leaving the home for ongoing anticipating appointments can also be expensive. In contrast, having a professional come to a residence is often more affordable.

Other Services

Shopping, running errands, and meal preparation are typical types of assistance that you might add to a package. Some assistants will also perform laundry and light cleaning work around the house. Inquire about personal care such as bathing, hair washing, and dressing.

Before making a final decision about home health care, perform a complete background inquiry for a company. After researching a company thoroughly, you should be ready to move forward with a contract.

My Face is So Painful it Can Hurt to Talk

Question:
I have had terrible pain and aching in the side of face for about four years. Thinking it was my teeth, I spent a fortune at the dentist, but it made no difference. The doctor says that it's 'trigeminal neuralgia'. I'm on a drug called carbemazepine but I still have days when it hurts just to talk or wash. It can also hurt round my eyes, which become red and puffy underneath. Have you any suggestions, please?

Answer:
I get many letters about this debilitating problem, which I am sure your doctor has diagnosed correctly, Neuralgia reiter to nerves. Cords of nerves, bundled, up in fibers surrounded by a protective sheath, run with messages from the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) to the muscles, skin and other body organs. Twelve pairs of cranial nerves come from the brain. Sensory nerves pick up touch, pressure, vibration, heat, cold and pain, as well as vision, taste, smell and hearing. Motor cranial nerves carry out the movements of the facial, eye, tongue, swallowing and speech muscles, and of the diaphragm.

The fifth and largest cranial nerve is a mixed nerve, called trigeminal because it has three branches. The top one supplies the upper part of the face, the middle one goes to the cheeks, nose and upper lip, and the lower one to the mouth, teeth, tongue and lower jaw. If the trigeminal nerve malfunctions, it can cause sensory problems including pain or motor complications such as difficulty chewing. Tic douloureux is a painful facial spasm that may occur with trigeminal neuralgia. The nerves are so sensitive that the tic can be triggered by a light touch, strong breeze, even a movement. Each attack can last for several minutes to several hours. The pain is so intense that some people opt to have the nerve surgically destroyed and face the prospect of a numb mouth, rather than more attacks.

Trigeminal neuralgia is hard to treat, its the undering cause is still not known. Strong painkillers are usually prescribed, and sometimes anti-epileptic drugs, such as carbemazepine, to suppress the spasm or tic. The problem, from what you say, is that yours is not the tic type but comes in waves.

My suggestions for moderating the painful bouts are as follows

* Eat soft foods, so that you do not need to chew a lot. Try soup, mushy rice, mashed potatoes, minced meat, turkey and chicken, overcooked or pureed vegetables, porridge soft-boiled eggs, mashed bananas and fresh non-citrus fruit and vegetable juices.

* Avoid cold foods, such as ice cream or ice cold drinks, also citrus fruits, coffee, excess salt, sugar and alcohol, which can all aggravate the pain.

* I have found massage and acupuncture to be the best form of treatment My special neck massage improves the blood flow to the brainstem and midbrain, via the vertebral arteries in the neck. These arteries have tiny blood vessels (called vasa nervorum) sprouting from them, which feed the trigeminal and other cranial nerves. Improving blood flow to nerves can cure infection. I have massed the necks of patients in the middle of an attack and witnessed instant relief. Rub along the sides of the neck and also give the neck traction by putting your hands round the base of the skull and very gently pulling it away from the shoulders. Also massage trigger points behind the ears, down the jaw, under the lower lip and down the lines from nose to mouth. Massage these points with your thumb or index finger for one or two minutes each, twice a day, until the pain vanishes.

* To help you relax, take Biorelax: one twice daily for one month. Also take vitamin B-complex: one daily for two months. Listening to relaxation CD or tape in the evenings before bed should also help.

* As soon as you feel an attack coming on, do the following retention breathing exercise for five minutes. Inhale deeply and hold your breath for 10 to 15 seconds, then – just when you think you are about to burst (do not panic) – breathe out very gently. Inhale slowly and hold your breath again for as long as you can. Practice daily, so that it redness and puffiness under your eyes, I suspect that this may be linked to the autonomous nervous system, which controls involuntary functions, including breathing and body temperature control, rather than the effects of the trigeminal neuralgia I think it would be worth asking your doctor to investigate. Perhaps you could be referred to a neurologist for more tests.

Smoking and Its Effect on Ear Infections

It is common knowledge that smoking has numerous bad effects, both to the smoker and non-smoker who is able to inhale second-degree smoke. More familiar are lung cancer, emphysema and heart failure. However, it is not well known that smoking also affects our ears, and can cause ear infection called Otitis Media.

This ear infection is actually quite common to children. When a child has a virus or a cold, there is a thickening of the mucus on the nose that becomes home to bacteria. The bacteria could travel to the ear canal through the Eustachian tube in the nose. This bacteria could then very well turn into an infection which shows symptoms of fever, fluid on the ear, and earache after a few days. On the average, children experience this 3 times before the age of six. However, if the child is exposed to smoke, say from smoking parents, the average occurrence increases to 8.

Now, how does smoking cause the said infection?

As we are all familiar of, smoke is an irritant to our nasal passage. Since our body is equipped with defense mechanisms, our nasal passage will thicken with mucus in the presence of irritants. As mentioned above, thickened mucus becomes a favorite home to bacteria that could travel and infect our ears. Thus the Otitis Media is triggered by the protective action of our body against cigarette smoke.

Aside from thickening our mucus, cigarette smoke also weakens the immune system. Numerous researchers have proven that exposure to smoke makes the body more susceptible to diseases. Also proven is that this is true not only for actual smokers, but for those who are exposed to exhaled smoke. Thus, even if children, or adults for the matter, do not smoke but are exposed to second-hand smoke, their immune system are still weakened, making it harder to fight off infections.

Now, it is not just the pain and discomfort that this ear infection brings that we must be wary of. Repeated Otitis Media could actually cause gradual loss of hearing to the child. Although this is rare, this is not something that we should risk.

Therefore, for all smokers out there, it important that if you can not stop smoking , at least try to avoid smoking around children . Ear infections may be less evil than lung cancer or emphysema, but since it is children that we are talking about, even the smallest infection should be given much importance.
