I’m a healthcare professional and I’m passionate about health and nutrition. With that being said, let me start off by saying the supplement industry is completely unregulated and you need to educate yourself as much as possible about the supplements out there. If you’ve ever read a bottle of vitamins or the backside of some a supplement or diet product you’ve seen, “These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.” While I’m not a huge fan of the FDA, I do believe there needs to be some sort of regulation with supplements. Considering most drugs are derived from substances found in plants, it only makes sense that eating plants, or plant-based supplements, will improve your health.
So, why eat whole food supplements instead of synthetic vitamins? Well, the quick answer is that synthetic vitamins are made from coal tar derivatives, which are known carcinogens. An easy way to tell you have synthetic vitamins is to look at the label and look for the parenthesis after the vitamin in question. For example, if it says Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), then it’s synthetic. Not only is it synthetic, but it’s also incomplete!!! Ascorbic acid is only one component of vitamin C. It’s an important one that makes up the outer shell of the vitamin molecule, but there are many other necessary for the vitamin to function properly. Real vitamin C also has phytonutrients, enzymes, co-enzymes and bioflavonoids. Without them, ascorbic acid is ineffective and creates more deficiencies in the body.
There have been many dangers linked to synthetic supplements and vitamins. Without a regulating body, it will take some time to see all the problems these vitamins are causing, but the truth will come out. In the meantime, I highly recommend throwing out all your synthetic vitamins and switching to whole food organic supplements. Thee typical American diet lacks the proper intake of fruits and vegetables. Also, the nutritional value of mass-produced vegetables is typically 10% of what it used to have 50 years ago, it’s practically a necessity to supplement with a whole food organic product to get vital nutrients into your body. I do believe having these vital nutrients can dramatically improve your health and fight disease. Many diseases can be directly linked to poor diet and malnutrition. Just because you eat until your full, doesn’t mean your body is properly fueled.
