It looks like something right out of a parenting magazine, and it's a scene that is played out some times a day in the majority of homes with small babies. Unfortunately, it's also a powerful marketing image that can cost a family a great deal of money in the long run.

The Convenience Factor

Most parents would say the main reason for using commercial jarred baby food is the convenience aspect. After all, with the busy lifestyle many of us have today, no one has time to specifically prepare a meal for each member of the family. It does not have to be a special event to create your own baby food, however. Baby can usually eat what the rest of the family is eating with very little special preparation.

Good Nutrition

Everyone worries about proper nutrition for growing babies. Iron, calcium, and vitamin D – all of these things are legitimate concerns in children's nutrition. However, fortified and processed foods are not necessarily better than whole foods. Homemade baby food, created from fresh ingredients, offers your child superior nutrition as well as encourages a taste for simple, unprocessed foods – a taste that will reasonably prevent obesity-related problems later in life. It's not necessary to offer commercial baby foods in order to have a healthy child.


Why pay more for an inferior product? Beginning baby food often runs between forty and seventy cents for two ounces. It's entirely possible to purchase half a pound of produce for the same amount, and baby will reap the benefits of eating fresh, nutritious food. Buying producing in bulk can result in even more savings, and even frozen produce is preferred to what you find in the jars.

Getting Started

It's important to know when baby is actually ready for solids. Introducing solids too early can lead to an increased likelihood of food intolerances and food allergies. Most medical associations agree that starting solids around six months of age is ideal, and many people find delaying solids for allergy-prone babies is even better. Signs of readiness for solids include:

  • Increased nursing for more than a few days, which is unrelated to illness or teeth, or, if baby is fed artificial baby milk, consuming more than 32 ounces daily.
  • Ability to sit up unsupported.
  • Absence of the tongue-thrust reflex. This life-saving reflex causes babies to push foreign objects (in this case, solid foods) out of their mouths to avoid choking.
  • Ability to pick foods up and place in mouth independently (or development of the pincer grass).

What About Allergies?

Experts recommend introducing new foods between three days and a week apart. This helps parents and caregivers identify signs of a food allergy or intolerance. Common signs of food allergy / intolerance are:

  • Increased bloating and gassiness, painful discomfort.
  • Sandpaper-like rash on face, often where the offending food made contact with skin.
  • Runny nose and watery eyes.
  • Diarrhea or mucous in the stools. Blood in the stool can also be an indicator of a food allergy, usually dairy or soy.
  • Red rash around anus, or an unusual diaper rash.
  • Vomiting or increased spit up with discomfort.

Ideally, it is best to introduce foods that are less likely to produce an allergic reaction in baby. Avoiding foods such as egg whites, certain nuts such as peanuts, cow's milk, corn, wheat, and some berries such as strawberries is recommended, as they are more likely to cause reactions. Instead, start with foods that are easier on baby's system. Some good ideas include:

  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Peaches
  • Pears
  • Carrots
  • Squash
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Asparagus
  • Oats
  • Barley
  • Brown rice

Tools of the Trade

Fancy equipment is not necessary to make healthy food for your baby. Things that might be helpful include a blender, a food mill, a steamer basket and ice cube trays if you want to freeze small portions. Most people have blenders already in their kitchens, and a food mill (or baby grinder) is not necessary if you have a good blender or food processor. Steamer baskets can be found in most grocery stores for only a few dollars, and fit easily into saucepans. Many beginner foods require nothing more than a small pan and a fork.


Many doctors recommend starting your baby on rice cereal first. Many parents find, however, that fruits go over better for beginning eaters. It is a myth that babies will prefer sweet things if they are given fruits first – nature's first food, breast milk, is naturally sweet, and that that what baby is accredited to. Banana is a wonderful first food, as its creamy consistency is similar to mother's milk. After introducing banana, try another fruit or vegetable. Continue adding fruits and vegetables until baby has a wide variety of tastes. Then consider adding whole grains in the form of cereal. Many whole grains have naturally occurring iron, so there is no need to supplement baby's iron unless there is a medical indication for doing so. Brown rice, oats, and barley are all good choices. Next, introduce a meat or poultry such as beef or chicken.

If you are a vegetarian, introduce another protein source such as tofu or lentils. As time goes on, introduce a combination of tastes, such as cereal mixed with applesauce or peas and carrots. This is also a great time to introduce finger foods, especially if baby has teeth. As baby learners to self-feed, you can move away from making purees and offer small baby-sized portions of the family meal.

Getting Started

Bananas make an ideal food for a baby starting solids. To serve, let bananas ripen well (the more ripe, the better – brown spots are desirable), cut into small chunks and mash with a fork. Pears are an excellent source of fiber and can be cooked like apples: peel and cut into chunks. Place in small saucepan and just cover with water. Cook until tender. These can then be mashed with a fork, run through a food mill, processed in a blender or food processor. They can also be offered as finger food if they are cut into small enough chunks. Carrots, another popular first food, should be scraped with a vegetable peeler, sliced ​​and steamed or boiled until soft. Process in blender or food mill. Carrots can be a choking hazard for children, so do use caution if offering as a finger food.

Sweet potatoes are extremely easy to make, and one potato can last a long time if frozen after cooking. Place sweet potato in a microwave for about eight minutes, remove and let cool. Open up and serve right out of the peel – the potato is very soft and needs no further processing. Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of B6.

Winter squash such as acorn or butternut makes an excellent first food. Cut squash in half and clean. Place in one half inch of water in a baking pan and bake at three hundred and fifty degrees for half an hour. Use a spoon to scoop out squash and feed directly to baby.

Avocadoes are an extremely nutrient dense food and offers important vitamins and minerals such as iron and potassium. Cut avocado in half around the pit, grab each half and give it a twist. Scoop out meat and mash or dice.

Making cereal for baby is very easy. Take a cup of the whole grain if your choice such as brown rice, oats, or barley and process in the blender until the desired consistency is reached, usually about two minutes for very young babies. Store in an airtight container. To cook, mix with liquid of your choice and heat over medium heat on stove until thick.

Physical Aspects of Depression

Depression is categorized as a psychological disorder, and that’s a reasonable classification. Depression often manifests in a person’s thinking. A depressed person will have a different perspective, a generally more pessimistic perspective, when considering life circumstances than a non-depressed person will. Depression, however, doesn’t begin and end with a person’s thinking.

Interestingly enough, most of the symptoms of depression present in physical ways, not psychologically. Some of the more common symptoms of depression include excessive sleep patterns or sleeping too little, weight gain or weight loss, lack of energy, emotional outbreaks, and other symptoms as well. Considering this symptom list, being overly emotional is the only symptom that might be seen as mostly psychological in nature, but even that presents in a physical way through crying or hostility or whatever.

The labeling of depression as a psychological problem, a problem of the mind, equates it with mental instability or weakness in the minds of some. Men in particular seem to be especially sensitive to being labeled with some form of mental or emotional disorder. On its face this type of resistance may not seem overly problematic, but it can become quite a serious issue.

Being reluctant to admit to even the possibility of being depressed is probably also going to lead to treatment reluctance as well. Depression has been known to clear independent of any treatment. This may be especially true in the case of a one time meaningful loss, the end of a relationship for example, or a death. But bouts of depression that aren’t triggered by a significant incident, or depression brought on by a heavily traumatic event, can become chronic depression. Chronic depression most always needs intervention, and without intervention can lead to a person becoming severely distraught and even suicidal.

Giving adequate consideration to depression’s physical nature can reduce the stigma of having, or possibly having, depression. This may be the reason that depression is sometimes attributed to a chemical imbalance in the brain. While some clinicians don’t like this description, there’s significant evidence that the brains of depressives do have a different make up than the brains of people who aren’t depressed. In other words, the brain is changed when depression sets in. This knowledge is what has sparked the development of a host of depression treatment drugs over the last twenty years or so, each designed to “fix”, in its own way, the depressed brain.

So depression changes the brain, and could even be said to imbalance the brain. The makeup of the brain being somehow changed would seem to define a problem that’s physical in nature, so depression may be a mostly physical condition after all.

How To Heal Your Cracked Heels

Did you know that the average person walks about 4500 miles in their lifetime? This means we take millions of steps and subsequently pound our heads with every stride. So it's no wonder many of us suffer with heel problems from time to time, particularly if we do not look after them and one of the most common complaints that many of us will have to end is cracked heels.

Known as heel fissures by podiatrists, cracked heels are splits in the upper part of the skin (called the epidermis) surrounding the heel margin and is generally due to the drying out of the heel from wearing open backed footwear.

It can be exasperated by heel calls and may be painful and / or bleed if the fissures are deep enough to enter the deeper skin structures (called the dermis).

They can be a variety of causes for cracked heels some of which are listed below:

  • Being overweight
  • Having diabetes will cause drying of the skin and heels
  • Zinc Deficiency
  • Standing for long periods in unsuitable footwear
  • Constantly wearing open backed shoes
  • Omega 3 Deficiency
  • Suffering from dry skin conditions such as Anhidrosis
  • Having eczema or psoriasis

Being obese can compound the problem of dry heels as excess pressure put on the heel margin may lead them to crack more seriously. Diabetes is a problem because it damages the nerve endings, particularly in the extremities such as the feet, which in turn can interfere with the function of the sweat glands. This inevitably leads to the drying out of the foot, sometimes leading to Anhidrosis, which is a severe drying of the skin.

Other skin complaints such as eczema and psoriasis or the use of certain medicines can also lead to dry heels and skin so it is important to recognize what's going on early enough to prevent the condition deteriorating.

So how do you cure your cracked heels once you realize you have them? Here are a few tips to help you:

Make sure you clean and dry your feet correctly every day. If they are severely cracked and possibly bleeding, it is a good idea to soak your feet in a bowl (or foot spa) of warm water with a tablespoonful of salt for 15 to 20 minutes each day. You can also put some essential oils into the water, such as tea tree oil which acts as an antiseptic, to help prevent infection.

Depending on the seriousness of the cracking and if there are any calluses present, you may want to exfoliate and file the heels down with a good quality heel file or pumice stone. Never try to use a blade on your own heels to remove calluses particularly if they are deeply fissured because you may cut yourself badly which may lead to more serious problems. It is always best to seek the advice of your podiatrist who will safely pare down your dogs with a scalpel and remove most if not all of the fissures.

Once they are washed and dried, it is important to moisturize them with a good quality emollient. If you only have minor cracked heels then a simple hand or body lotion can be applied to your feet.One of the quickest ways to resolve them is to wear plastic bags or cling film over your feet in bed at night after creaming them. The plastic acts like the covering for burns patients.

If the cracking is more pronounced, then you may need a specialist over-the-counter moisturizer such as Flexitol Heel Balm or CCS foot care cream, which contains a high amount of synthetic urea, known for its dry skin properties. They also have a CCS + lotion which contains over 50% urea for more serious cracked and thickened (callused) heels.

If you would prefer some more natural home remedies for cracked heels then here are some heel 'recipes' you might be interested in:

  • Exfoliate with the help of strawberries and olive (or almond) oil. Mix 6 to 8 crushed strawberries with around two tablespoons full of almond or olive oil and a teaspoon of salt (table or sea salt). Apply the mixture as you would any exfoliate and leave for 15 minutes before washing off. Massaging the mixture in will also help with blood circulation.
  • Apply and mixture of 1 teaspoon full of Vaseline with the extract from one whole lemon mixed together and applied to the cracked areas of your heels. Apply daily until the cracks resolve. Try applying a mixture of glycerine and rosewater on a daily basis will also help
  • Try 100g of coconut oil with 3 teaspoons full of camphor and 3 tablespoons of melted paraffin wax. This will act similar to a waxed based aqueous cream like E45. Leave on overnight by using a pair of bed socks and wash off in the morning before applying a moisturizing lotion.

It is the juices and oils in these preparations that will help hasten the healing process of the cracks and fissures as they act as an emollient for your skin. However, before using any preparation, please be aware of any allergic reactions that may occur and always ask advice of a medical professional before embarking on self-treatment for your dry and cracked heels.

Identifying Triggers

In order to solve a particular problem, you need to go down to its root cause and take remedial measures to correct the same. The same holds true in case of anxiety also. Is My Daughter Gay?

This is a question that countless mothers ask themselves, particularly of late, as there seems to have been a fashionable leaning towards lesbian experimentation in recent times.

As a mother of a practicing gay daughter, I can only tell you about the traits that manifested themselves in my child and the series of events which forced me to acknowledge that my daughter was different.

However, before I do so, I would like to say that if your daughter is prepubescent and actively voicing her gay felings, chances are she is not! Many girls these days form incredibly close relationships with their peers, sharing secrets that they could not possibly disclose outside of these friendships. Sometimes the bonding can become so intense, it can be misconstrued as love. Girls today are not afraid of expressing their emotions either verbally or physically and hand holding, embracing and even kissing are not necessarily indicative of anything more than a friendship.

From my experience of lesbians (I have met a few now, since my daughter has “come out”) they tend to be very secretive about their feelings. In our case, there were no obvious signs, or if there were, I failed to pick up on them, however, even if I had, my daughter would have vehemently denied any suggestions of lesbianism until she was ready to confront it herself.

Up until the age of about fifteen, my daughter was a happy, confident child. She had a large network of friends, was doing well at school and we shared a relatively easy mother/daughter relationship (as easy as any relationship can be with a teenager!) She was keen on fashion, music and all the usual stuff and even went out on a few dates, although these never amounted to anything.

The changes were subtle at first. She spent longer and longer at the computer and began to drift away from her old friends, preferring to make new ones. Over the next few months, school became difficult, she was unhappy with her subject options and wanted to change classes. She lost her Saturday job that she had had for years and she began to put on weight. Slowly my daughter was unravelling and I couldn’t understand what was happening to her. Despite all my efforts she turned away from me and spent more and more time in her room.

The turning point came when she began to self harm. This was her cry for help. She did not actually damage herself, she scratched at her wrists with a compass but it was enough for me to insist she saw a doctor. My daughter was diagnosed with depression, which I found terribly hard to accept. She was obviously desperately unhappy and yet I couldn’t understand why. I blamed myself for being inattentive and then I blamed her for being self absorbed. I have to say here though, that even at this stage, my daughter still went out on the odd date, albeit with little or no enthusiasm, and she still gave out all the signs that she was looking for a heterosexual relationship.

Luckily for us, our doctor was brilliant. My daughter told her that her depression was due to her weight gain and the doctor weighed and measured her, assuring her that her weight was not inconsistent with her height. She had my daughter going backwards and forwards every week and eventually when my daughter could no longer hide behind her weight issue, she found the courage to admit to the doctor that she was doubting her sexuality.

Once my daughter had been able to express her emotions, the changes in her were radical. Far from being secretive, she became almost militant overnight. The hair was cut short and the dresses and skinny jeans were exchanged for baggy trousers. I can’t say that life became any easier at this point, in fact this was probably the worst time for both of us as we were both floundering. My daughter spent hours and hours researching gay sites and began to hang around with people who I felt were a bad influence on her.

Our doctor advised me it could be a phase and that my daughter could grow out of it at any time. She advised me however, “to go with it, the best I could” and she offered me “Counselling for the Parents of Gay Children”. To this day I struggle with both.

Two years on from this, my daughter is enjoying a steady gay relationship with a girl two years older than she. They have been together over a year and to all intents and purposes, I have my daughter back. Her hair is long once more and she is back in her skinny jeans. She managed to attain her qualifications and has an interesting job. She is confident and happy in her own skin.

It is not what I would have chosen for my daughter and if I am honest, I still find it hard to accept that this is the way it is always going to be, but to go against her choice of partner would be to risk alienating her and that is not something I can contemplate.

How to Find Your Hidden Fears

Are hidden fears holding you back … without you knowing it? Once you’ve dragged a fear out into the open, you can work out ways to cope with it, live with it, protect against it…But you have to find it first.

Clues to fear are when you find yourself saying: ‘Oh, I can’t; I daren’t; I shouldn’t; I mustn’t; I couldn’t do that … I’d be so embarrassed … I wouldn’t know what to say … they’d think I was stupid … I might not like it … I’d miss my usual routine … foods … environment too much. …’ You have lots of good, rational, sensible reasons for all these hesitations, of course. But as often as not, what lies underneath is just plain fear.

Fear is like pain. Nature evolved it as an information system. When you meet a sabre-tooth tiger, you don’t need to work out intellectually that those teeth could do quite a bit of damage. You run automatically. Fear stops you doing stupid things and mobilises your energies to get you to safety

When someone you love is in danger, when you find a lump, when the airplane drops a couple of thousand feet … then fear is out in the open, operating the way it’s supposed to. It’ horrible, but at least you’re able to confront it and look for ways to cope with it or live with it.
The problem fears are the ones we don’t confront, maybe don’t acknowledge or try to hide from ourselves, maybe don’t even know about. They hold us back without us knowing why. When you get right down to it, most of the barriers in our lives are of our own making. And most of the reasons we create these barriers is fear. Quite often, those fears won’t be sensible and protective but silly, artificial, essentially meaningless … based on a childhood hangover or false assumption. But so long as the fear is hidden, you never get a chance to find out just how realistic it really is and get it into sensible perspective.
How to find hidden fears

Listen to your excuses. It’s human nature to find good reasons for what we do, even when we’re really acting from pure instinct or unthinking emotion. So fear tends to lurk behind a maze of rationalisations and excuses. This means your energy goes into trying to deal with the excuses, instead of the fear which is producing them.

For instance, do you say: ‘Well, I’m trying to get fit, I want to lose weight, but …’? You haven’t time, you’ve a bad back, it’s too much trouble to eat properly, you just get so hungry, exercise is so boring, life isn’t worth living without chips and chocolate …

If you try and deal with these excuses at face value you probably find yourself playing the ‘Yes, but’ game:

You: ‘I can’t eat a low-fat lunch, everything in the canteen is fattening.’
Friend: ‘They must do a salad, couldn’t you have that?’
You: ‘Yes, but then I’m still hungry and I can’t work properly.’

Friend: ‘Couldn’t you take something to work?’

You: ‘Yes, but I simply don’t have time in the mornings.’

Friend: ‘Couldn’t you cook it the night before?’
You: ‘Yes, but I’ve enough to cope with doing the family meal in the evenings…

And so on, indefinitely. Getting rid of one excuse only produces another.There’s only one way out of this game, and that’s to stop playing it. To simply say, OK, so I don’t want to do this. Why?
Let your feelings guide you. The useful answer to WHY you don’t want to do something, why fear is holding you back, is always going to be not verbal or intellectual, but emotional. Take a quiet few moments to imagine yourself in the situation you’re avoiding, and open yourself to the feelings that produces. Let yourself react physically. Do you tense up, huddle in on yourself, find yourself wincing, feeling sick, gritting your teeth, clenching your fists? Read your own body language, and as often as not it’ll tell you that underneath your excuses and reasons why not … is fear.
Be specific. Be VERY specific … Fear of what? Don’t settle for a vague, abstract answer, but pin it down to details, so you can confront it and plan for it. ‘Change is always frightening.’ Precisely what aspects of this particular change are frightening, and why, and how could you cope with them? ‘I’m afraid of failing,’ Exactly what could happen if you failed, and would it really be so awful? What emergency plans could you make? ‘It might upset my family.’ What would they do? How would you feel if they did it? How could you cope with your feelings and theirs? ‘It would be awful.’ Would the discomfort of foregoing chocolate, missing your favourite telly program, sitting down and writing that overdue letter really, seriously, be more than you can endure?
Pin down those what if’s. Your what if’s are useful pointers towards underlying fears. For each one, ask yourself exactly what would really happen. ‘What if … I get muddled … I can’t cope … I’m the fattest person in the gym … I can’t stick to a diet … I fail the interview…they laugh at me, don’t like me, reject me, find out I’m not much good really.’

So what would really, seriously happen if …? You’re afraid people will laugh at you? Will everyone you know really stand around pointing and jeering? It’s more like a playground nightmare than a sensible adult worry. It might have been a valid fear when you were ten, but now? You’re afraid you’ll fail? Everyone has failures, and you know it. It’s not fun, but it’s not the end of the world. You can’t succeed without failing, and you certainly can’t learn anything without failing. And so on.
