Living With Type 1 Diabetes

Diabetes is a serious disease. It is an incurable and complex disease that can cause life-threatening complications if strict lifestyle changes are not made upon diagnosis.

There are two forms of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. Each has its own characteristics however both can cause devastation if not treated properly.

Type 1 Diabetes is most often diagnosed in children. It was commonly referred to as ‘Juvenile Diabetes’ Type 1 Diabetes is when the body fails to produce the insulin that is needed to turn sugar and starches into the energy that the body needs to keep itself going.

A diagnosis of Diabetes is serious, however it is not the end of the world. It can be a very frightening experience, however, discussing the best way to treat it is to learn everything you can about the disease. There are conditions and complications that Type 1 Diabetes can cause. Knowledge is the key to your health and happiness.

• Hyperglycemia – High blood glucose
• Hypoglycemia – Low blood glucose
• Ketoacidosis – Failure to regulate Ketone production
• Celiac disease – a digestive disease that wreaks havoc on the small intestine and prevent the body from absorbing the nutrients it needs from food.
• Heart disease – can cause death if left untreated
• Retinopathy – blindness if left untreated
• Neuropathy – severe nerve damage if left untreated
• Nephropathy – kidney damage or failure if left untreated

These conditions are serious, and can have devastating effects on your body. It is critical that you learn all that you can as soon as possible. Consult with your physician, he or she may be able to recommend different ways to adjust to living with Type 1 Diabetes.

It is critically important that you take care of yourself. It will be necessary to initiate lifestyle changes that may be difficult to adjust to, however it is imperative to your health that you make these changes.

The one thing that will need to be controlled is your diet. You will need to learn what you can and cannot eat. Having Diabetes is not a death sentence, you will need to re-think and adjust to a different lifestyle.

Consulting a nutritionist who specializes in menu plans for those with Diabetes can show you that just because you have this disease does not mean you have to give up on tasty food. He or she will give you menu options that are good, fun and nutritious.

There are many different changes your body will go through when you are diagnosed with Diabetes. Skin, eyes, feet and oral hygiene will take on a whole new meaning when you are diagnosed. You will need to pay special attention to each area to avoid any complications that may arise.

It is also critically important that you do not drink alcohol when you are diagnosed. It can raise your blood sugar to dangerous levels. If you are going to be at a function where alcohol is being served it is critically important that you monitor your blood sugar level carefully before taking a drink.

Controlling your Diabetes and taking insulin shots is manageable as long as you are aware of what the danger signs are. Many Type 1 who recognize the warning signs of Hypoglycemia keep a piece of candy in their pockets for when they feel an attack coming on. The small amount of sugar in the candy can help restore their sugar level.

Learning all you can about Type 1 Diabetes will insure your health and well being.

Major Complications of Obesity and Their Causes

Obesity leads to various ailments and psychological problems. The muscles of obese persons are weak and flabby. Arthritis is also common in obese persons. The weight bearing joints are under constant stress and strain due to excess weight of the body. Blood vessels of obese persons get constricted due to excess cholesterol, which form plaques (atheromas). This leads to high blood pressure, stabbing pain in the chest (angina pectoris), heart attacks and strokes. The digestive system of obese persons is prone to diseases like diverticular pathologies. Gall stones may be formed due to excess cholesterol. Cancers, diabetes are all products of obesity. Obesity also creates problems during pregnancy.

The various diseases and complications due to obesity shorten the lifespan of individuals and can lead to premature death. Mortality and morbidity are both to associate closely with obesity. An obese person not only suffers physical pains but also suffers psychological trauma. He feels inferior, and there may be psychological problems as he is often ridiculed and teased.

Causes of Obesity

The various causes of obesity include overeating, lack of exercise, sedentary lifestyle, genetic factors, endocrine (hormonal imbalances) – all constitute important causative factors of obesity. Among endocrinal causes we need to discuss certain syndromes. In syndromes we have a set of pathologies grouped in a very characteristic manner.

1. Cushing’s syndrome

This is due to excessive glucocorticoid hormones (cortical). This can also occur due to excessive corticosteroid administration. That is, both endogenous and exogenous cortisols can cause cushings. The clinical features are:

• Wasting of tissue myopathy (weak muscles); thin skin, osteporosis, purple abdominal striations.
• Water retention oedema, high BP.
• Obesity of trunk, head, neck.

Apart from there they will be excessively prone to infection; poor wound healing, hirsuitism (hair growth in women).

2. Pickwickian syndrome

This syndrome is caused by many factors; obesity is one of the causes. Enlarged tonsils, acromegaly, myxoedema are all other causes. What happens in this syndrome? During sleep there is collapse of pharyngeal walls leading to respiratory obstruction, sometimes for well over a minute. O2 and CO2 disturb sleep and there is daytime somnolence. Personality changes, intellectual deterioration, headaches, enuresis are all presenting features. One of the important aspects of treatment is to lose weight.

3. Laurence moon biedl syndrome

There is polydaetyly (extra digits) retinitis pigmentos, cataract, microphthalmia, obesity, absent facial hair, hypogenitalism. This is a pituitary gland disorder. Also called Frohlichs syndrome or Adipose genital syndrome, some consider the fat boy of Pickwick Papers as an example of this syndrome. Others put him in the ‘pickwickian’ syndrome, i.e., obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome.

Thus we see in the above syndromes that either obesity is a cause or manifesting feature.

Walnut Cedar Chests

Chests are pieces of furniture that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. They could add much needed flair in any room in the house, and could serve as a container for other articles. Chests in bedrooms could contain children's toys, clothes, books and other things. It could hold important family memoirs like letters, papers, pictures and photos. Many chests are designed and carved to give out a classic vibe, while some designed to be more minimalist and streamlined. But whatever design or purpose a chest may have in your home, it all comes down to the question of whether or not your chest will last. Whatever it will outlive you and become an antique is another question. This is why it is important to consider the materials that are used to make the chest.

Choosing the Right Materials

Hardwoods are the most reliable materials that are used when it comes to wooden chests and furniture in general. Hardwoods are strong and tough, and they come from natural sources. Synthetic woods like plywoods break down easily, but hardwood are more resistant to wear and tear. Furthermore, many hardwoods have beautiful natural colors that add to the beauty and design of a piece of furniture. Some hardwoods even vary in color depending on how they were processed. This gives hardwoods a lot of versatility when it comes to using them as raw materials for furniture.

A good hardwood combination to use to make wooden chests is cedar and walnut. These two hardwoods have distinct characteristics that combine beautifully to make a very striking article. The very fact that they are hardwoods would secure you that chests that are made of walnut and cedar would be very strong and would last more than a lifetime.

Cedar wood is popularly used as materials for furniture because of its properties. Cedar trees are chiefly grown and harvested in some areas because of high demand for its quality wood. Cedar wood is very tough and long lasting, and so many of cedar furniture become antiques. It is deceay-resistant and weather-resistant and seen. Cedar is also most frequently used as wooden linings for closets and cabinets that are made to hold clothes especially woolen ones because cedar wood repels moths and their grubs. It is also can absorb moisture and deodorize and so it is used to make shoe holders and trees. Cedar is also known to be one of the 'tonewoods', because solid agar cedar produces warm tones in guitars and other musical instruments. Walnut wood on the other hand, is another good hardwood prized for its attractive colors and its tight grain which when polished produces a very smooth finish. Walnut is one of those hardwoods that change its color depending on how it is processed. Walnut wood color ranges from creamy white to the very dark brown color, similar to dark chocolate. It could also have a dull brown color when oven discharged and a purple-brown color when air dried. Because of this, it has been used for many furniture. Walnut wood is not only used in furniture, but also in car dashboards and in guns and rifles. Like cedar, walnut is also used to make stringed instruments.

These properties when combined make a very good piece of furniture, especially on wooden chests. The colors of walnut wood give distinct aesthetic value to your wooden chest. With the variety of colors that walnut wood can assum, it will be easy for you to choose the color that suits your preferences. You can also choose the color that best fits the theme and design of the room you want to place your chest. Since it produces a very smooth finish, it can immediately command attention and brighten up any dull room. It's strong qualities make walnut wood great for the chest's exterior. It's weather proof, so it can resist common changes in humidity and sunlight. It makes it easy for the chest to last longer because of the resilience of the wood. Walnut wood is also known to age and become more beautiful as it ages. The beauty of your wooden chest shows more as the piece of furniture lasts longer with you.

Interior Considerations

Wooden chests with cedar and walnut combinations usually have the cedar as the lining of the chest. The properties of cedar make it good to be the material most in contact with the things you put inside it. This makes it good for storing clothing articles and other cloths. Since cedar is moth resistant, storing clothes in a chest made of cedar would help hold your clothes, especially woolen ones. Same goes for the other things you put inside the chest. Books, photos and other memoirs stay well protected inside the chest. Since cedar wood has this nice fresh scent, you would not fear to have your clothes smelling like the dull smell of wooden cabinets. Cedar also deodorizes so it can neutralize any strong smells that can take away the freshness of newly washed clothes. Since cedar is strong and resilient, you can be sure that the chest will remain as beautiful and functional as it is whatever you put inside it.

This combination of two strong hardwoods would guarantee the fact that your wooden chest will last. It can even outlive you and be part of your family's heirloom. This furniture is made to be the antiques of the next generation. A cedar walnut chest is definitely an excellent purchase to make.

Tips to Prevent From Heat Rash

Heat rash is a red or pink rash usually found on body areas covered by clothing. It can develop when the sweat ducts become blocked and swell and often leads to discomfort and itching. Heat rash is most common in babies, but may affect adults in hot, humid climates.

Heat Rash also can appear as large, reddened areas of skin. Babies and children are also more likely to be affected than adults because of their underdeveloped sweat glands, in which case the rash is commonly found in the nappy area and in the skin folds or on the neck. Heat Rash can also occur in cooler climates when sweating is a problem.

Heat rash can usually be identified by its appearance and does not usually require medical attention. However, if doesn’t go away after 3 or 4 days, or if it appears to be getting worse, or if your child develops a fever, contact your health professional right away.

It usually occurs on clothed parts of the body, such as the back, abdomen, neck, upper chest, groin, or armpits and goes away on its own within a few days. In severe forms, however, heat rash can interfere with the body’s heat-regulating mechanism and cause fever, heat exhaustion, and even death.

When working in the heat, monitor the condition of your co-workers and have someone do the same for you. Heat-induced illness can cause a person to become confused or lose consciousness. If you are 65 years of age or older, have a friend or relative call to check on you twice a day during a heat wave. If you know someone in this age group, check on them at least twice a day.

Aanti-histamine creams or medications will relieve the itch. Antibiotics and topical antiseptics are used to prevent bacterial blooms. Keep the skin cool and dry. Keep the sleeping area cool.

The best treatment for heat rash is to provide a cooler, less humid environment. Keep the affected area dry. Dusting powder may be used to increase comfort, but avoid using ointments or creams-they keep the skin warm and moist and may make the condition worse.

Apply hydrocortisone cream. For older children and adults, 1% hydrocortisone cream can kick the itch. A thin layer, applied to the rash two or three times a day, may help the bumps heal faster, too. Be sure to follow the package directions, and never use these creams on babies.

The power of vitamin C against the pain of prickly heat was demonstrated in a more controlled study carried out in Singapore by dermatologist T. C. Hindson, of the British Military Hospital there. It began with one of those happy accidents that the history of science is so full of. An Australian Air Force officer, troubled by a rash in his groin that had resisted all medication for a year, told the doctor that it suddenly cleared up in the course of a week when he caught a cold and started taking 1 g of vitamin C a day.

Summer is a time for fun and play but it can also be a time of discomfort when you can’t beat the heat so take every precaution you can to have a healthy, happy summer. By playing it cool, you can beat the summer heat and the discomfort of heat rash.

His racing career has seen rewards and honors including Funny Cide Street in Napa, California, the song Funny Cide both written and performed by Blue Hand Luke and the Funny Cide Stakes at Saratoga Race Course.

Another beloved race horse is Smarty Jones. He was foaled on February 28th, 2001 and was sired by Elusive Quality and out of dam I'll Get Along. Most racing fans are also fans of Barbaro. Although he was a favorite in the Preakness Stakes, he suffered a fracture of three bones in his right hind leg ending his racing career forever. Even after immediate surgery, this famous race horse developed laminitis in his left hind leg in July then in both his front legs; Thus, his doctors and owners knew he could not be saved so he was euthanized on January 29th, 2007. With an almost perfect racing record, Barbaro had 6 wins from 7 starts including the Preakness Stakes when he could not finish the race. He is honored with the Barbaro Stakes at Pimlico Race Course (home of the Preakness Stakes) and Delaware Park along with a statue commemorating Barbaro at the entrance to Churchill Downs. Horse racing fans of all generations were deeply saddened by the death of Barbaro.

Cure Cold Sores on Lips with Tea Tree Oil

Cold sore conditions usually develop on the cheeks, chin and even on the nose. Aside from being unsightly, the blisters or the sores can be painful and cause fever as well. Cold sores are highly contagious, but these usually lie dormant inside the body with occasional outbreaks. The most unfortunate thing about this condition is that the virus cannot be cured although the symptoms of it can be alleviated. However, you should know that you can easily find home remedies that can help you deal with the symptoms of cold sores on lips.

Using Tea Tree Oil for Cold Sores

As mentioned, the main culprit for cold sores, which is the herpes simplex virus, cannot be eliminated from the body and once it has infected an individual, outbreaks may recur in the future. The sores may appear as small blisters and transform to crusted sores or lesions after several days. These sores or lesions may stay on the affected area for a couple of weeks before it starts to disappear. As no cure is available, the affected individual is left with no other choice but try home remedies and medications for the condition.

It was observed that there are very few remedies effective for the condition. Among these is tea tree oil. Tea tree is an herbal plant from which an essential oil can be obtained from. This essential oil contains natural antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties. Although no conclusive evidences are available to prove that tea tree oil can really be helpful against the condition, some affected individuals benefited from it, as it can reduce the duration of the outbreak. Other individuals also believe that tea tree oil extracts can help prevent future outbreaks of the condition.

To start using tea tree oil extracts as natural remedies for cold sores, you can try finding one from your local pharmacy or beauty store. One important thing to take note of is that this type of essential oil can only be used externally and cannot be consumed internally, as it may contain ingredients that can be toxic for both humans and animals. To be able to treat cold sores with tea tree oil, one can make use of a cotton swab soaked in it and applied on the sores at least twice daily. Tea tree oil is helpful in speeding up the healing process of the condition and in preventing the infection from spreading.

To use tea tree oil to prevent cold sores, you can apply the oil on the affected area once you are experiencing the initial symptoms of the condition, such as the burning or the tingling sensation. Some people use it in diluted forms while some opt for the undiluted form of the oil. This is because the undiluted form can sometimes cause irritations and rashes to those with sensitive skin. In case you are worried that it may cause you allergies, you can opt for a patch test before applying it on the affected area. When diluting tea tree oil, make sure to combine it with equal amounts of water.

The application of this essential oil should be used continuously or until the sores are healed. Whenever you use tea tree oil to the sores, make sure to use a clean damp cloth to get rid of the crusts and pat it dry after application. If this is the first time that you will be using tea tree oil for cold sores, you can consult a pharmacist on how you can dilute the oil or seek your physician’s advice with regards to the use of tea tree oil as treatment and preventive measure for cold sore problems. For severe outbreak, your physician can also provide you information on how you can manage it properly, just like in any other conditions such as the symptoms of chronic heartburn.

Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment for Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy relates to a group of neurological disorders involving a disturbed muscular coordination and movement. This condition results from brain damage occurring in the first few months or years of life, brain infections such as bacterial meningitis or viral encephalitis, and head injury. The symptoms of this condition include uncoordinated muscular movements known as ataxia, rigid muscles, exaggerated reflexes, foot drop, walking on the toes, a crouched or scissored gait, and muscle tone which can be either stiff or floppy. There is no medicine for this condition in the modern system of medicine; Physiotherapy is given to improve or maintain muscular tone and coordination.

Brain damage occurring in cerebral palsy may also cause mental retardation and an inability to speak properly, coupled with a limited vocabulary. Ayurvedic treatment for cerebral palsy is therefore aimed at improving both physical and neurological functioning as well as treating mental retardation and symptoms related to dysfunctional cognition and speech. It is important to stay treatment at the earliest possible in order to obtain maximum results from Ayurvedic treatment.

Treatment for cerebral palsy is focused on reversing the brain damage and improving the health of brain cells to the maximum extent possible. Treatment also involves improving the chemical neurotransmission from the brain through the spinal chord and up to the peripheral muscles. Muscular tone and strength also needs to be improved while simultaneously reducing spasticity and muscle floppiness. The main focus is on Ayurvedic herbal medicines which are known to improve and strengthen the nervous system both structurally as well as functionally. The main treatment is in the form of oral medication which needs to be continued for at least 18 to 24 months in order to provide the maximum possible therapeutic benefit to affected individuals. Herbal medicines are used since these have a very wide safety margin and can be used for prolonged periods without any serious adverse effects.

Oral medication is also supplemented by localized therapy in the form of different types of Panchkarma treatments. These include specific treatments for the brain as well as massage therapy for the entire body. Specialized treatments known as Shiro-Basti and Shiro-Dhara are used to strengthen the brain, while different massage therapies using different types of medicated oils are used to strengthen muscles as well as provide stimulation to the peripheral nerves. Graded physiotherapy can also be given simultaneously in order to provide a comprehensive treatment plan for affected individuals.

Individuals who have cerebral palsy and pronounced mental retardation are also treated separately with herbal medicines which improve mental functioning and improve faculties of intelligence, reasoning, and speech ability. These medicines also supplement the above-mentioned treatments and improve all the symptoms commonly seen in cerebral palsy. For most individuals who have a normal brain structure, albeit with a reliably damaged or undeveloped brain, the results of Ayurvedic therapy are dramatic and can frequently improve all the symptoms as well as quality of life. Ayurvedic herbal treatment thus has a significant role to play in the management and treatment of cerebral palsy.

Important Qualities of Successful eBiz Entrepreneurs

Forbes magazine reported that the majority of their readers would rather become billionaires than to be a Nobel prizewinner or a successful athlete. Of course, many people dream of becoming rich but very few make any effort to reach that goal.

Each year the majority of people that become millionaires are self-made or owners of a business. It is also true that most of these successful people share some outstanding qualities.

It is not ever easy to succeed as an online business entrepreneur. To be successful in your eBiz, there are particular qualities that are necessary. Some qualities you may be born with and others are developed through your life experiences. It is also possible to improve or strengthen these important qualities.

Achiever – Successful entrepreneurs are hardworking and persistent. They master the trait of self-discipline so they are not side-tracked from their work. They always looking forward with their goals. If something has not worked, the achiever finds another way to accomplish his task.

Entrepreneurs that succeed realize that even the boring aspects of their business are important. Being able to consistently get things done is vital to their continuing progress and their overall profits. Sticking to the work at hand and getting it accomplished is important no matter how large or small the task may seem.

Reasonableness – Common sense or reasonableness is the foundation of success for almost every eBiz owner. Common sense is the ability to make level-headed, sound decisions on daily issues.

Gaining specialized knowledge and continuing to learn is required to become a successful business entrepreneur. The best entrepreneurs learn from every source they can including competitors.

Approximately, forty-five percent of all new start ups fail in less than two years. The biggest reason for failure is that many entrepreneurs never get the industry knowledge they need before launching their business.

Timidity or hesitation will prevent business owners from ever taking even calculated chances or risks. Self-confidence is a quality that is developed and improved with experience and training.

They are interested not just in specific assignments but the overall well-being of others. They realize that leadership is not about being an evil task-master but it involves helping others reach their potential.

Responsibility – A successful entrepreneur takes full responsibility when something goes wrong. They recognize when their own actions have led to a less than desirable result. By acknowledging their mistakes they are learning more and thus have fewer errors in the future. They do not waste their time and energy trying to pin mistakes on another individual or company. They simply acknowledge the failure and move on.

Do not be discouraged if you feel you are weak in one of these areas. Developing and excelling at these qualities is an ongoing process. Being aware of the areas you want to improve is a big step towards success. Always keep in mind that your eBiz will succeed even more if you master these important qualities. With determination and zeal anyone can become one of the successful eBiz entrepreneurs.

Do You Suffer Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a persistent, auto-immune disease that you can see on the skin, and usually on a person’s elbows, scalp and knees. In some very bad cases, Psoriasis can be found anywhere on the body and sometimes all over the body.

It is not contagious, but there are 5 forms of psoriasis –

* Plaque Psoriasis (the most common form)

* Pustular Psoriasis

* Guttate Psoriasis

* Erythrodermic Psoriasis

* Inverse Psoriasis

Generally a sufferer has only one of the above at any given time. That’s not to say though that if one from of Psoriasis clears, another will generally appear in response to some trigger. It would appear that the sufferer’s immune system is inadvertently triggered, appearing to cause swift acceleration of skin cell growth.

Rather than a normal skin cell taking approximately 29 days to mature prior to being shed by the body, a skin cell in a psoriasis sufferer only takes 3 or 4 days to establish and rather than shedding this skin cell , the cell piles up on the surface of the skin, forming psoriasis lesions. What you see are red, raised patches on the skin covered with a silvery white buildup of dead skin cells.

Psoriasis is sometimes associated with other severe health conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes. 3% of the populations are sufferers which in Australia means more than 600,000 people. In the USA, some 8-9 million people are sufferers. (According to the National Institutes of Health). You can experience Psoriasis at any age (even as a baby) but it generally tends to present itself in both males and females, in their late teens or early twenties. Many sufferers do grow out of the condition over time but others do not and some tend to have a second peak when they reach their fifties.

WHAT CAUSES PSORIASIS?

Similar to many other skin conditions the exact cause of Psoriasis appears to be unknown. Research indicates that a combination of a person’s immune system and genetics contributes to the development of Psoriasis. Although only 2-3 % of the population develops Psoriasis, it is suspected that 10% or more actually inherit one or more of the genes that create a predisposition to Psoriasis.

Apart from being genetically predisposed to Psoriasis, the condition will not appear to develop without some exposure to external triggers. A little like epilepsy, the triggers seem to be specific to the sufferer. However the known Psoriasis triggers include infection, some medications, injury and stress. If you suffer from Psoriasis, check with your doctor as to any medications you may be taking that could worsen the condition. Known as the Koebner phenomenon (also called the “Koebner response” or the “isomorphic response”), Psoriasis can develop in areas of the skin that have been injured or traumatized in some way.

COMMON TREATMENTS FOR PSORIASIS

Common treatments for Psoriasis are:

Over-The-Counter Medications – sold without a prescription from the Doctor, there are hundreds of products, creams, lotions and treatments for the scalp. Generally most of these do not appear to work and are usually full of chemicals and toxins which can actually inflame the situation.

Prescription Medications –Given under the guidance of a Doctor they can only be received via a Doctor’s prescription. These medications have unreliable results but none are actually a cure for Psoriasis.

Other Treatments– Ultraviolet phototherapy systems are used for treating Psoriasis, and is the application of mid wave light energy (Ultraviolet-B light [UVB]) or long wave light (Ultraviolet-A [UVA]). While Ultraviolet phototherapy appears to slow down abnormal growth of normal skin cells there is risk associated. Exposure to UV light over prolonged periods is known to increase the chances of contracting skin cancer.

WHAT IS THE PRODUCT FOR PSORIASIS?

Tamanu or more specifically, Tamanu Oil (scientific name is Calophyllum Inophyllum) is a relatively undiscovered solution for several skin care problems. One of which is Psoriasis. There has been numerous studies on Tamanu Oil, however the research has been limited, due in the most part to the product not being known outside Pacific Island countries such as Vanuatu.

Sufficient scientific studies have been conducted in Europe and the USA to know that Tamanu oil has the distinctive capacity to encourage the formation of new skin tissue and that it contains anti-inflammatory, anti-neuralgic, antibiotic and antioxidant properties. It is also completely natural, no chemicals or toxins.

How To Get Rid Of Nail Fungus. Natural Remedy

WHAT IS NAIL FUNGUS?

An infection of nail fungus can occur when fungi infect one or more of your nails. A nail fungal infection may begin as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your fingernail or toenail. As the nail fungus spreads deeper into your nail, it may cause your nail to discolor, thicken and develop crumbling edges – an unsightly and potentially painful problem.

NAIL FUNGUS SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

You may have a nail fungal infection – (also called onychomycosis) – if one or more of your nails are:

* Thickened
* Brittle, crumbly or ragged
* Distorted in shape
* Dull, with no luster or shine
* A dark color, caused by debris building up under your nail

CAUSES

Fungi are microscopic organisms that don’t need sunlight to survive. Some fungi have beneficial uses, while others cause illness and infection.

Nail fungal infections are typically caused by a fungus that belongs to a group of fungi called dermatophytes. But yeasts and molds also can be responsible for nail fungal infections.

RISK FACTORS

Nail fungus is more common among older adults for several reasons, including diminished blood circulation, more years of exposure to fungi and because nails may grow more slowly and thicken with aging, making them more susceptible to infection. Nail fungus also tends to affect men more than women and those with a family history of this infection. Resistance to fungal infection likely has a genetic component.

COMPLICATIONS

Nail fungal infections can be painful and may cause permanent damage to your nails. They may also lead to other serious infections that can spread beyond your feet if you have a suppressed immune system due to medication, diabetes or other conditions.

TREATMENT

Nail fungus can be difficult to treat, and repeated infections are common. Over-the-counter antifungal nail creams and ointments are available, but they aren’t very effective.

Oral medications
To treat nail fungus, your doctor may prescribe an oral antifungal medication, such as:

* Itraconazole (Sporanox)
* Fluconazole (Diflucan)
* Terbinafine (Lamisil)

These medications help a new nail grow free of infection, slowly replacing the infected portion of your nail. You typically take these medications for six to 12 weeks but won’t see the end result of treatment until the nail grows back completely. It may take four months or longer to eliminate an infection. Recurrent infections are possible, especially if you continue to expose your nails to warm, moist conditions.

Antifungal drugs may also cause side effects ranging from skin rashes to liver damage. Doctors may not recommend them for people with liver disease or congestive heart failure or for those taking certain medications.

PREVENTION

To help prevent nail fungus and reduce recurrent infections, practice good hand and foot hygiene by following these steps:

* Keep your nails short, dry and clean. Trim nails straight across and file down thickened areas. Thoroughly dry your hands and feet, including between your toes, after bathing.

* Wear appropriate socks. Synthetic socks that wick away moisture may keep your feet dryer than do cotton or wool socks (you can also wear synthetic socks underneath other socks). Change them often, especially if your feet sweat excessively. Take your shoes off occasionally during the day and after exercise. Alternate closed-toe shoes with open-toed shoes.

* Use an antifungal spray or powder. Spray or sprinkle your feet and the insides of your shoes.

* Wear rubber gloves. This protects your hands from overexposure to water. Between uses, turn the rubber gloves inside out to dry.

* Don’t trim or pick at the skin around your nails. This may give germs access to your skin and nails.

* Don’t go barefoot in public places. Wear shoes around public pools, showers and locker rooms.

* Choose a reputable manicure and pedicure salon. Make sure the salon sterilizes its instruments. Better yet, bring your own.

* Give up nail polish and artificial nails. Although it may be tempting to hide nail fungal infections under a coat of pretty pink polish, this can trap unwanted moisture and worsen the infection.

* Wash your hands after touching an infected nail. Nail fungus can spread from nail to nail.

NAIL FUNGUS SELF-CARE

Sometimes, people turn to traditional home made remedies because current treatments can take a long time to work and aren’t always effective . There are two remedies that have proved to help nail fungus infections : vinegar and Vicks VapoRub.

Coping With Autism and OCD

After yet another display of lining up toys or endlessly performing the same behavior over and over it's not unusual for parents to wonder if their child may not one but two disorders – autism and OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).

OCD is a neurological disorder that causes obsessive thoughts and behaviors and can seriously disrupted a person's life. There are two main elements to OCD, thoughts or obsessions and compulsions or behaviors.

The obsessions are experienced as thoughts, images or impulses and can be persistent. Whereas compulsions are repetitive behaviors that the sufferer feet compelled to carry out whenever they want to or not. The performance of the repetitive behaviors is usually done to reduce distress or to stop a particular event.

It is common for people with an autism spectrum disorder to also display repetitive behaviors and have repetitive thoughts, comparable to those who suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). OCD is a condition that generally makes sufferers feel uncomfortable with their symptoms, and wish that they could get rid of them. On the other hand children with autism are usually unconcerned with their various obsessions or behaviors and may even see them as comforting, increasing the frequency during stressful situations as a calming mechanism.

There are two possible treatments for autism and OCD-like behaviors: behavioral therapy, and medicine. Frequently, these two forms of therapy are prescribed together.

The most common kind of medication prescribed for treating OCD behaviors in autistic individuals are SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). SSRIs are antidepressant medications that have also shown to be helpful in reducing OCD behaviors. However, they can come with some serious side effects including an increased risk of suicide. Parents' who children are on SSRIs should monitor behaviors closely and report anything out of the ordinary to a medical professional.

Behavioral therapy can be another way to reduce repetitive behaviors, however there is not one treatment that has been found to be consistently effective for all cases of autism. This is due to the fact that no two cases of autism are exactly the same.

Before, before a behavioral therapy is selected to deal with autism and OCD symptoms, an IQ test and / or functional cognitive level test will usually be administrated. Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) works well for lower functioning children or youngger children, and Cognitive Behavioral therapy can show good results for higher functioning, more verbal children with autism.

To ensure best results it is often recommended that behavioral treatments and medication be combined. The medication is usually prescribed to help the child become more open to the behavioral therapy. Since behavioral therapy can be challenging – especially as most children do not see their OCD behaviors as undesirable – medication can make the difference in encouraging children to be open to the suggested changes.

While autism and OCD can occur in the same individual, it is much more common for children with autism to simply display behaviors that are similar to those of OCD, but that are in fact a part of their autism symptoms and not a separate case of obsessive Compulsive disorder. Nonetheless, it is believed that autism and OCD based repetitive thoughts and behaviors are quite similar in the early stages of development, but become dissimilar over time as they often serve different functions within the two disorders.

Dealing with autism and OCD at an early age should be prioritized to ensure that regular childhood and life experiences such as early education occurs more smoothly. The fewer obsessive-compulsive symptoms a child with autism has generally, the more positive their educational and life experiences will be.

If you believe your child is suffering from OCD contact your doctor to discuss diagnosis and treatment options.

The Itchy Dog: is it an Allergy?

Scratching is a very common symptom in dogs, and you as an owner should aim to nip it in the bud early before self trauma causes secondary injuries to your dog. However, before wondering whether your dog could have an allergy, you must rule out the common parasitic (fleas and mites), bacterial (hot spots) and fungal (ringworm and yeast) infections. See my article Is your Dog Scratching to explore these in greater detail.

Just as allergies have become more common in children these days compared to several generations ago, veterinarians are seeing far more allergies in pets too. It is difficult to explain this phenomenon, theories range from alterations in the content of pet foods to the use of modern day household cleaning products or simply genetic evolution. One thing is certain, whatever the cause, allergic dogs benefit hugely from avoiding the offending allergen or, if that is impossible, appropriate treatment to minimize the itchiness.

Lets start with the presenting signs of an allergy in dogs. Itchiness can manifest itself not only as obvious scratching at the neck and flanks, but also as face rubbing, foot licking or chewing and over grooming. Foot licking, for example, is often perceived by owners as normal, when in fact the dog is responding to itchy feet in the only way it can, by licking them. The skin between the toes may turn red and sore due to the compulsive licking, and in white dogs such as West Highland White Terriers and Bichon Frises, the fur is stained brown by saliva.

Ear infections are another common sign of an underlying allergy. Though general waxiness, hair in the ear canals, lack of ventilation, bacteria and yeast may trigger the infection, an underlying allergy is often the root cause of the itchiness. If your dog gets recurrent ear infections, by eliminating an underlying allergy you may prevent your dog from going over the itchiness threshold and developing full blown ear infections.

So, what are the common allergies in dogs?

For convenience they are best separated into 4 categories.

1)Flea bite hypersensitivity
2)Adverse food reaction
3)Atopic dermatitis
4)Contact dermatitis

Flea bite hypersensitivity is relatively straight forward to cure. It is a simple case of eliminating every single flea on the dog and, crucially, in his/her environment. The itchiness is caused by an allergic reaction to the flea saliva, and so even a solitary flea can trigger a scratching frenzy. To rule out flea bite hypersensitivity, all animals in the house (dogs and cats) should be treated with a reputable veterinary spot on medication monthly without fail, and the house should be thoroughly sprayed with an insecticidal spray.

Adverse food reactions are more difficult to treat as it can be difficult to isolate the precise ingredient responsible for causing itchiness in your dog. Not only that, treating adverse food reactions requires owners to be exceptionally disciplined and motivated in preventing their pet having even a single treat unless the exact ingredients are known to be safe.

There are two ways of diagnosing an adverse food reaction (also known as a food allergy). For those readers for whom cost is not an issue, a blood test can be done to measure for ingredient specific antibodies in the bloodstream. The blood test is quite costly, and if combined with a blood test for environmental allergens is usually upwards of $400 (£200). The company performing the blood test then provides a list of ingredients (chicken, beef, pork, rice, wheat etc) and a score next to them, suggesting which ingredients are best avoided. The owner then picks a commercial diet which does not include any of these ingredients, or indeed a special home cooked diet. The second way to diagnose an adverse food reaction is to conduct a dietary trial. This involves picking a very bland hypoallergenic diet and feeding your dog exclusively that for at least a month, preferably 6 weeks. The author usually suggests turkey and rice, as less dogs are allergic to turkey than chicken. Of course if your dog happened to be allergic to rice or turkey, which is rare but nevertheless possible, you would be none the wiser as the itchiness would continue and you would assume you had ruled out a food allergy having done the turkey and rice dietary trial. Remember if you are doing one of these trials, then your dog must not be given any treats, especially not pigs ears, chews, boneos, dental sticks or any rawhide products. Literally nothing must be swallowed other than turkey and rice (and water!) for the entire trial period.

If you have ruled out flea bite hypersensitivity and ruled out an adverse food reaction, the next step is to consider an environmental allergy, also known as atopic dermatitis. Symptoms of atopic dermatitis usually begin between 1 and 3 years of age, though any age is possible. The itchiness is often seasonal, which is consistent with a pollen allergy, though some dogs are itchy all year round. There are certain breeds which are predisposed to this condition: Boxers, Bull Terriers, Dalmations, English Bulldogs, German Shepherd Dogs, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Shar Peis, Shih Tzus and West Highland White Terriers being the most commonly affected. Diagnosis is usually made based on the history and ruling out all the other causes of itchiness, and many vets will treat the condition on these presumptions. However, definitive diagnosis can be achieved via a panel of injections into a patch of skin, or blood tests. Neither of these are particularly effective and generally not performed unless the owner is prepared to attempt a desensitization programme. This involves a long term course of injections given by your vet on, say, a monthly basis to desensitize your dog to the offending allergen, and so make the allergic reaction much smaller when he/she does come into contact with it.

Contact dermatitis is a skin reaction caused by your dog coming into contact with a chemical that is an irritant. It therefore only tends to affect the stomach, groin and feet of the dog, and is characterized by reddening and drying of the skin in these areas. It can also be seen when owners shampoo their dogs with a product that is not intended for use in dogs. Contact dermatitis is rare, but easily ruled out by careful use of cleaning products around the household. Just think, did the itchiness coincide with the introduction of a new carpet cleaner, washing powder or fabric softener?

By far the best treatment for any allergy is avoidance of the cause. By careful investigation and following the steps above this is often possible, especially for flea bite hypersensitivity, adverse food reactions and contact dermatitis. If avoidance is impossible though, as is the case for many cases of atopic dermatitis, then seasonal or lifelong treatment may be indicated. Steroids are very effective at stopping itchiness caused by allergies, but long term use can lead to undesirable side effects, such as adrenal gland disease. Long term steroid use should only be used as a last resort, when other medications have been tried and failed. These other medications include antihistamines, essential fatty acids and medicated shampoos.

Type 2 Diabetes – How Much Weight Have You Lost Recently?

I’m going to assume you have the intention to lose weight, or that it would benefit you to shed a few pounds. Ideally, it is going to be both assumptions. Which brings me to the following question: how much weight have you lost recently? Now, if you have not had the intention to lose weight, it may seem a ridiculous question to answer. But if you have, you may be about to face an internal conflict: most people are not as successful with weight loss as they would like to be!

But guess what, that is okay. There is nothing wrong with having a hard time. Losing weight, from beginning to end, is far from easy. Sometimes it is necessary to ask yourself the hard questions because it is then the honest answers come. The answers that help you find the motivation to get to work and set things straight.

Weight loss is an interesting topic. It is relevant for many adults but less so for teenagers and children: weight gain tends to occur slowly over an extended period meaning various degrees of obesity are prevalent in adults. Regrettably, however, we now see higher numbers of obesity in our youth than we saw in the past. Obesity is now well represented in most age groups, notably due to poor lifestyle habits and unhealthy eating.

Since weight loss is relevant for many adults, it has likely been on your mind. Losing 20 pounds…

  • getting lean once more, and
  • attaining manageable blood sugar levels,

are all common goals for most.

If you have been thinking about losing weight, then you need to be honest with yourself. Are you happy with your recent progress? Maybe there is little to talk about, which may make you feel a failure. Or, you haven’t given it a serious shot, because your intentions have not been strong enough.

What is important is being honest with yourself. The truth could hurt. But in that case, it would help set you on the right course.

Weight loss requires persistence. It requires healthy eating and physical activity. It takes commitment. But the benefits are endless. As an example, reducing your weight will lower your blood sugar levels and reduce your insulin resistance. For those that know little about Type 2 diabetes, this could result in adding years to your life. Time is our most precious resource, yet many often forget this in pursuit of other things.

Maybe you haven’t made much progress after deciding to shed some body fat. But you do have it in you to ensure your next step is a leap in the right direction – even if you happen to take a step or two backward. You just may not know it yet – that’s all.

Is Hcg Weight Loss Safe For Men: Male Hcg Side Effects

Many males looking to lose weight are interested in the use of HCG treatment. The question pertaining to male HCG side effects automatically arises. What are the male HCG side effects of use if there’s any? Are males in any danger while being on HCG Weight Loss plan? Let’s examine these questions more in depth below.

If HCG is used correctly there is often little concern for side effects for both male and Female. As a matter of fact, HCG is a natural water-based hormone present in both men and women, although it is produced in great amounts in pregnant females. HCG products can safely be used by both male and female that are looking to get their weight under control. The potential male HCG side effects may include common symptoms associated with diet, such as body fatigue, headaches, irritability, and men may also begin to retain water when they first use HCG.

Male HCG side effects can also include the development of soreness or tenderness right in the region where HCG injections are applied, which is a most common side effects while taking injections such as flu shot. In some cases, men have noted the development of restlessness as well, but all of the above side effects are rare in occurrence. If male HCG side effects are noted and become too bothersome, then it is highly recommended that the individual talks to his doctors or clinics for consultation.

The side effects produced by HCG use differ between men and women, at least to a certain degree. Women may face more side effects than men do. For example, females who take HCG treatments for fertility purpose run the risk of developing pregnancy symptoms such as nausea and tenderness of breast tissue. However when HCG shots are used for weight loss reasons, a much smaller dosage is used (125 IU comparing to 10,000 IU for fertility purpose 10,000 IU). So there are rarely side effects reported while using HCG diet injections, or oral HCG for weight loss purpose.

Any and all male HCG side effects should certainly be monitored. If any effects develop, it is safe for the user of HCG to consult with his physician. It is recommended that one stop HCG weight loss if such side effects develop at any time. Discussing one’s dieting options with a qualified medical professional are also recommended.

God, the Supernatural Healer

A missionary lady was sitting by her window as she opened her mail. In one letter she found a crisp, new, ten-dollar bill. She was pleasantly surprised, but then she noticed a poorly dressed stranger leaning on a post by her window. She could not get him off her mind. Thinking that he might be in greater need than her, she slipped the bill into an envelope and wrote "Do not despair". She handed the envelope through the window to the man. He read the note, smiled, tipped his hat and walked away.

The next day she heard a knock at the door. There the same man handed her a roll of bills. When she asked what they were, he said, "That's your sixty bucks, lady! 'Do not despair" paid five to one! "

The Old Testament reading from 2 Kings 5: 1-14 is a classic example of the conflict between man's way of doing things and God's way of doing things. Naaman wanted to be healed, but in his own way. He wanted Elisha to come out and perform some sort of healing ritual. He wanted to wash in rivers of his own choosing. When he did not get his way, he reacted like a small child does when it does not get its own way-he had a temper tantrum. It took the words of someone insignificant to convince Naaman to humble himself and submit to God's plan. All of us are lepers who need God's healing touch, but sometimes we can not see beyond our successes and shortcomings and realize that we need to be healed.

Leprosy was significant in the Bible for several reasons:

1. The leper was considered to be unclean and had to be isolated form the rest of society. Whenever he went out, he had to cry "unclean", and he had to wear black with a hood covering his face. He also had to live outside the city walls.

2. Leprosy was incurable in Bible times just as sin is incurable by man.

3. When Jesus healed a leper he always pronounced the person cleansed, not healed.

4. The rite of purification in the Old Testament only recognized the fact that a leper was clean. It did not cure the leper.

5. Leprosy begins on the outside and then erupts on the skin. Sin also begins with what we are and then erupts on the surface.

6. The priest was to examine the leper and pronounce the person clean or unclean depending on his observation of the facts. Since Christ has provided cleansing from sin, every believer as a believer priest is to detect sin in their own life and pronounce it as sin when it first appears.

7. The pain of leprosy was not severe because it also killed the nerves in the affected area. Portions of the body became numb, muscles wasted away and fingers and toes developed ulcers. Sin is like that. We are dead spiritually, so we do not feel the pain of our sin.

8. The leper was often considered to be dead, and people without Christ are nothing more than spiritual zombies.

9. Leprosy and sin occurs regardless of one's position, power, honor, possessions or wealth.

10. The restoration of the leper is a metaphor for the restoration of us to God when we accept him in faith.

11. Leprosy destroys the body, and sin destroys our relationship with Christ.

God does not work according to our ideas or plans. In fact, there is an old joke that goes, "How do you make God laugh? Tell him your plans". When we let God tell us what to do, we will be cleansed from our sins. When we follow God's plan for our lives instead of our own plans, we will be cleansed from our sins.

Believe it or not, God gave Naaman his victories. It was part of the greater purpose to reveal God's power and mercy to Naaman the foreigner. It shows that God is for everyone- both Jews and Gentiles. It foreshadows the opening of the Gospel to the Gentiles in the Book of Acts.

God often speaks through humble people. He used the Israeli slave girl to lead Naaman to Elisha-the first step in his healing. He used the soldier to convince Naaman to obey Elisha's orders-the second step in his healing. Elisha was also humble. He did not use any of his powers to heal Naaman-God did. Elisha did not even leave his house to meet Naaman in person. Humble people are used by God at any time and in any place he chooses and in any way he chooses.

God also acts through simple acts of obedience that do not seem to be related to the problem. For example, washing seven times in the Jordan River might not seem to be related to Naaman's leprosy. The solution called for faith. The faith began with the little servant girl when she innocently assumed God's power. Because of the girl's faith, Naaman's wife told her husband, and he told the king. Naaman had his doubts, but he went. His servants had more faith, because they convinced Naaman to try Elisha's remedy.

This story also shows how our intentions can be misunderstood by others. Naaman introduced himself to the king of Israel as both a courtesy and the belief that the king had the power to heal Naaman. The king knew that he did not have the power to heal anyone and saw Naaman's request as an excuse to start war between Israel and Syria. You see, according to the custom at that time, the main object of a letter was the only item mentioned in letters that were delivered in person. Other issues were discussed in person. There was also a belief that if a king or other sacred person touched or washed his hand over a sore, the sore would be healed. (Pause)

The story of Naaman the leper is a story of salvation. Naaman's healing led him to believe in God and worship God. It is a picture of what God would do later on through Jesus Christ. It is a picture of what man was like before sin took its toll. Elisha knew that it was God's power that healed Naaman, not Elisha's.

Today, we, like Naaman, will do anything spectacular to ensure our salvation. We suffer, build churches, give money, or sacrifice privileges when all we have to do is wash in the blood of Jesus and receive his gift of eternal life. Because the plan is so simple, many of us turn away as Naaman did and refuse the greatest of all gifts.

Naaman's healing ritual was a step down for him in more ways than one. It was a step down from toxic success to new health and life. Naaman's skin became like the skin of a little child, and his heart found new life. Some of us probably know people who have been victims of their own success. Perhaps we have been victims of our own success. Those people have gone from the top of the ladder to the bottom, sometimes yanked down a step, sometimes moving more or less at will.

Elisha was a wise man. He knew that Naaman's healing was not simply a cure for his leprosy. Naaman needed to submit, know his weakness and dependence on others, expand his view of who was connected to his life, get naked and humble, and let go and die to his old self. God's free grace is for everyone. It's too simple to deal with our sin and guilt (or so we think), so we punish ourselves. We, like Naaman, are at times related to accept God's free gift. We, like Naaman, must be committed to see our cleaning through.

Being made whole is something else. It is to be changed or transformed. It is to know that God is at work in our lives. It is to be welcomed by joy. It is to be enveloped by a peace that passes all understanding. It is to know an uncontrollable joy. It is to know the power of God's grace in our lives. It is to respond with thanks, gratitude and laughter.

Naaman was healed of his leprosy, but he was also healed of his identity as a warrior. When he accepted his weakness and dependence on someone else, when he realized that he could not live his whole life by only trusting in himself, when he met the God who is well beyond his control and manipulation, Naaman discovered his true healing and his Transformation into a whole man who can let go and trust others and God.

God overturns our human expectations and imposed limitations and breaks into our world with healing and new life. God chooses to make all things clean. It involves clearing pride, dignity and authority from the path. There is little room for things as they should be or for those whose self-adequacy closes them off to God's healing help. That might be surprising, upsetting and world changing for us. It is also a little threatening as it involves radical personal and social changes.

How do we respond to people who come to us for help? Do we ignore them? Do we listen to them and then send them on their way instead of helping them? Do we just throw money at the problem by making a donation or do we lower ourselves like Naaman did and actually do something to help them? If we actively receive them like Elisha received Naaman, we will have responded with God's love and we will have received a gift to us through them where we can fulfill his call to show love, mercy and forgiveness to all.

If we obey God, that does not mean he will pay off five to one like the horse in the story at the beginning of my sermon, but he will bless us with many blessings, he will not be in debt to us for long, he Will return even greater gifts and he will reward us.
