Pregnant? What They Don’t Tell You

Pregnant? Congratulations! How do you feel? Scared? Excited? Shocked? pleased? or maybe something totally different. For me it I was amazed, scared and couldn’t think straight for a week! I was finally pregnant after all the times of trying it had happened, now for the easy bit – or so I thought.

It may come as a bit of a shock to you that people tend to bend the truth when you are pregnant. They only tell you the good things and not all the bad, like the worrying aches and pains and strange happenings. So here I am letting you in on some of my experiences from my pregnancy….

It took my husband and I months and months to get pregnant and my stress levels were through the roof. It was only after I had finally snapped after finding out that my sister in law was pregnant after only 2 attempts. That my frustrations came out and I ended up throwing a frying pan at my husband had a huge screaming row and cried for England at work. After I had that out of my system I broke down in my doctor’s office telling her it was impossible to get pregnant. She asked me if I had been under stress to which I replied I had been but felt much better after my big row!

She suggested that I should start to use an ovulation kit to determine when my most fertile days were. To be honest with you the thought of that made me feel like a total failure. I thought that getting pregnant was something that was so easy it would only take a few months. I was relatively young, nearly thirty and in good health, so why wasn’t it happening.

Well, there was a pretty simple reason: I was not ovulating when I thought I was! I had in fact got a long cycle that meant my dates were out by a week. We had a practice run sorting out the dates and then the next month I was pregnant!

So, the test is positive what now? Well, from my experience you could well expect bad stomach cramps; they are not unlike the pains you would associate with your period except that it never comes. After I found out my test was positive I went through six weeks of the most painful stomach cramps I have so far experienced. Be assured this was not every night but very frequently. People I spoke to told me they never had it but don’t worry it was perfectly normal. But that didn’t stop me from thinking I was on the brink of having a miscarriage every time I had these pains.

Eventually I found in a book I had recently bought, two sentences about the possibility of stomach cramps in the early stages of pregnancy, caused by the uterus stretching and if it became to painful try some paracetamol – IF it became to painful? That was an under statement to say the least. By this time I had discovered that drinking peppermint tea slowly in small sips also provided me with some relief. With that worrying hurdle out of the way what could happen next?

Breasts! Oh yes! Remember that feeling you get around the time of your period of how tender they felt? Well multiply that by 100 times and you may have some idea of how painful and sore they feel in the early stages of pregnancy!

I was five weeks pregnant when I just could not stand the pain of my usual bras any longer and in my lunch hour at work I ran down to Mothercare grabbing an assistant and saying. ” I’m five weeks pregnant, do you have any bras that I can wear with out wanting to rip them off in screaming agony!” to which the rather bemused sales assistant took my into a little room, measured me and bought in delightful selection of bras that looked like they could be used for hurling boulders out of.

After trying on about half a dozen fancy lacy ones I settled on a plain and boring cotton one but it was comfy – oh so comfy! And if anymore proof were needed I have worn the same 2 throughout my whole pregnancy and I have never worn anything so comfortable!

Paranoia seems to rear its head on a regular basis throughout the pregnancy. I felt everybody was talking about me behind my back, what a bad thing it was but they were too scared to say it to my face. Why did I feel like this? No idea! It was of course totally untrue and everybody was really happy – don’t you just love hormones.

Lets talk morning sickness, or as I discovered all day nausea for about two months. It suddenly just started at about eight weeks when I was walking around Marks and Spencer’s food hall when I smelt the rotisserie chicken and all of a sudden leaving quickly seemed a very good idea! Ginger biscuits and small sips of water got me through that little hurdle.

At three months I experienced the worst pain in my back down my legs I have ever felt. It was sciatica but the pain was so bad I couldn’t sit down for a few days!

Oh yes that pregnancy glow you are supposed to get along with the boundless energy – well I’m still waiting for mine and my baby is five years old now!

When I reached the six month stage I once again experienced the most awful pain in my stomach and ended taking my self up to the hospital convinced I was in premature labour. I wasn’t of course it was finally diagnosed as my ligaments stretching but no body ever tells you to expect so many aches and pains.

Yet another delight you could expect, nappy rash – ouch! No wonder babies scream so much! At seven months this awful rash appeared all around the top of my thighs. No matter how much cream I used it rubbed when I walked and boy it was so painful I nearly cried!

Lets not forget the joy of heartburn, when you are desperate for sleep you lie back and what happens? That awful feeling of burning gets worse and worse, so you struggle out of bed drink a glass of milk to calm it. Then find that once you are up again you need yet another trip to the loo before heading back to bed, where you know as soon as you lie down it starts all over again!!

Don’t get me wrong being pregnant was an amazing time: the kicks you feel, the hands and feet stretching your tummy so you can grab them, seeing the ultrasound and yes like a lot of people my baby really did wave at me when she was being scanned! Listening to the heart beat and knowing that very soon this little miracle would soon be with you.

Throughout my pregnancy, and even now I am a mum the one thing that I have relied on more than anything else has been my mother’s intuition or gut feeling. I have followed these feelings on a number of occasions and so far I have been guided correctly: deep down you can usually tell how you are feeling. If that nagging voice in the pit of your stomach doesn’t go away, then follow it Do this and you shouldn’t go far wrong.

Causes of Brain Cancer

Brain cancer can occur at any age. Studies have shown that two major age groups are affected. From ages 3 to 12 and 40 to 70 are the age groups when brain cancer is formed. Since researchers have been able to gather this data, it has led to the discovery of some risk factors. Workers in certain industries are at a higher risk for brain cancer than workers in other industries. These include, rubber manufacturing, drug manufacturing, and oil refining. Since brain cancer often occurs with members of the same family, heredity is believed to be another cause of brain cancer.

There are many different kinds of cells in the brain, each with a different function. Sometimes the cells inside the brain begin to grow uncontrollably leading to a tumor. A tumor in the brain may or may not be malignant.If benign a tumor stays where it starts, although it can grow very large and put pressure on crucial areas. In the case of a malignant brain tumor however this has the ability to spread and brain cancer occurs. Brain cancer is dangerous and life-threatening as the cancerous cells can interrupt vital brain functions. When brain cancer occurs, the cells continue to grow at a rapid pace.

Symptoms of brain cancer

Some very common symptoms of brain cancer are headaches and nausea; but these can really be caused by something else. So, headache and nausea shouldn’t really be taken as brain cancer. Some other symptoms of brain cancer are related to incorrect working of some of the basic senses (that are mainly governed by brain) e.g. speech, vision and smell etc. Again, there is no point in getting worried all by yourself; you should, in any case, consult a qualified doctor and let them know clearly about the various symptoms that you have observed. The doctor can then diagnose whether it is brain cancer.

Treatment of Brain Cancer

The use of high-dose X-rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Radiation therapy for childhood brain tumors usually comes from a machine and is called external radiation therapy. Steroids may be given to reduce any swelling in the brain. Drugs to control seizures may also be prescribed. The use of drugs to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy drugs may be taken orally or injected into a vein or muscle. Chemotherapy is called a systemic treatment because the drug enters the bloodstream, travels through the body and can kill cancer cells throughout the body.

This chemical is considered toxic if it is inhaled, absorbed through the skin or ingested.

Alcohol, Isopropyl (SD-40): This is a drying agent used in many cosmetic products. When used directly on skin it strips off the outermost protective layer, exposing the body to bacteria, fungus, molds, and other toxins. It is derived from petroleum and may promote brown spots or premature aging.

Anionic Surfactants: surfactants are used in almost all personal care products that make foam. They are also used in car washes, garage floor cleaners, and as engine degreasers. Common anionic surfactants include: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS), Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALES), Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Sodium Lauryl Sarcosinate, Sodium Cocoyl Sarcosinate, Potassium Coco Hydrolysed Collagen , TEA (Triethanolamine) Lauryl Sulfate, TEA (Triethanolamine) Laureth Sulfate, Lauryl or Cocoyl Sarcosine, Disodium Oleamide Sulfosuccinate, Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate, and Disodium Diocetyl Sulfosuccinate. You should avoid all of these chemicals.

Cationic Surfactants: These are surfactants used in hair conditioners for their anti-static properties. However, they are synthetic, irritating to hair follicles, and toxic. Long-term use can make hair dry and brittle. Common cationic surfactants include Stearalkonium chloride, Benzalkonium chloride, Cetrimonium chloride, Cetalkonium chloride, and Lauryl dimonium hydrolysed collagen.

Chloromethylisothiazolinone and Isothiazolinone: these harmful chemicals can be corrosive to the eyes and skin. Long term use can permanently damage the eyes and cause serious skin burns. They can be fatal if swallowed and damage the lungs if inhaled.

DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), & TEA (triethanolamine): These ingredients are often used in personal care cleansers to adjust their pH (acidity or alkalinity). They can cause allergic reactions, eye irritation, dryness, and toxicity when used over time. These known carcinogens are already restricted in Europe but they may still be found in the formulas of American and Asian cosmetics.

Diazolidinyl urea and DMDM ​​Hydantoin: These contain formaldehyde, a toxic carcinogen, and can cause dermatitis, burning, irritation of the mucous membranes, inflammation, and watering of the eyes.

Ethoxylated surfactants: These surfactants are commonly used in cosmetic formulas as foaming agents, emulsifiers, and humectants. They may be listed on the ingredient label as "PEG", "polyethylene", "polyethylene glycol", "polyoxyethylene", "-eth-", or "-oxynol." These chemicals form 1,4-dioxane (a known carcinogen) as a byproduct in the manufacturing process.

FD & C Color Pigments: These synthetic colors are made from coal tar. They contain heavy metal salts that leave toxic byproducts on the skin. When tested on animals they cause cancer.

Formaldehyde: This is another cancer causing chemical commonly found in commercial make-up products. It can cause allergic reactions, headaches, and chronic fatigue.

Imidazolidinyl urea: This chemical releases another harmful chemical, formaldehyde, as a byproduct in the manufacturing process. It might be listed under the trade name Germall 115.

Lanolin: This chemical usually looks harmless, and is used in many cosmetic formulas. However, it comes from the wool of sheep and is there contaminated with the pesticide DDT without it is obtained from organic sources.

Mineral Oil: Also called liquid parrafinum, mineral oil is a byproduct of petroleum that coats the skin like plastic. It disables the skin's natural ability to purge itself of toxins, slows down cell function and can cause premature aging. Mineral oil can also be found in paraffin wax, paraffin oil and petrolatum.

Nitrosating Agents: Chemicals that cause nitrosamine contamination have been found in laboratory tests to cause cancer. Nitrosamines can be found in the following ingredients: 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol, Cocoyl Sarcosine, DEA compounds, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Formaldehyde, Hydrolysed Animal Protein, Lauryl Sarcosine, MEA compounds, Quaternium-7, 15, 31, 60, etc, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, and TEA compounds.

Paraben preservatives (methyl, propyl, butyl, and ethyl): These chemicals are often used in cosmetic formulas to inhibit microbial formation and extend the shelf life of the make-up products. They are commonly used in commercial applications even though they are known to be highly toxic and to cause allergic reactions and skin rashes.

Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) compounds: This petroleum product is used in commercial cleaners to break up grease and in spray on oven cleaners. Over time, this chemical can cause premature aging.

Propylene / Butylene Glycol: This chemical is considered so toxic that the EPA mandates that its workers wear protective equipment when handling it. It is a petroleum product that penetrates the skin easily and can cause brain, liver, and kidney malfunctions. This ingredient is often found in stick deodorants.

Rancid Natural Emollients: Creams and other commercial cosmetics made from refined vegetable oils contain harmful transfatty acids. Polyunsaturated oils can also oxidize quickly, causing free-radical damage to the skin and premature aging. They are also missing the essential nutrients, fatty acids, and vitamins that help protect and moisturize the skin.

Silicone derived emollients: these products coat skin like plastic, and disrupt the skin's ability to breathe and release toxins. They can accumulate in the liver and lymph nodes and promote the development of tumors. Common silicone derived emollients include Dimethicone, Dimethicone Copolyol, and Cyclomethicone.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALES): When combined with other ingredients, they create nitrosating agents and are carcinogenic. Be especially wary of so-called natural products that claim to be derived from coconut oil.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS): These chemicals can alter the immune system and cause damage to the eyes, digestive system, nervous system, lungs, and skin. They are commonly found in foaming personal care products. And may be listed as ingredients on semi-natural products that claim to come from coconut oil.

Stearalkonium Chloride: Originally developed as a fabric softener, this chemical is often found in hair conditioners and creams. They are toxic chemicals that can cause allergic reactions.

Maybe all the careers help other people, or involve creativity or good listening skills. As you read over your list of possible career choices, which ones cause you to feel excited and hopeful? Can you combine any of these career choices into one career or can you create a portfolio of careers? There is no rule that states we must have only one career at a time. Write a short paragraph about your ideal job, be as descriptive as possible and make sure you include the amount of money you will be earning. Post this where you can see it every day.

Now that you have a clear picture of your ideal work, you can begin to explore the options for getting yourself there. Does it require more education or training? This is where you mind may start telling you that you can not afford or do not have time to go to school. The best thing you can do for yourself is to shut that voice down immediately. Instead, adopt a belief that you can and will find a way to get the training you need. There are scholarships, government loans, on-line education and unlimited ways to earn the fund or find the time to get an education if it is really important to you. You will be amazed at the doors that will open up for you when you have a clear vision.

Meanwhile, remind yourself daily that there are things about your current circumstances that are good, be grateful for those aspects, concentrate on them. If you can not leave your current employer, what can you learn while you are still there? Sometimes there is a person or a situation there that frustrates you. That situation or person may exist to teach you to be patient, tolerant, to set boundaries or to stand up for yourself. Use the challenges to further your own growth

Create work for yourself that is enjoyable and fulfilling and you will rarely feel the need to say "I'm great, it's Wednesday and I'm halfway through the week!"

How Experts Treat Ankle Sprains

The most common type of ankle sprain is an inversion injury. The ankle turns in. Inversion sprains are common complications that may occur after casual strolls, “trips”, falls, and sports.

Most sprains are minor but the severe ones can result in ligament strain or rupture and cartilage injury to the bones within the ankle joint.

The most important risk factor for a new sprain is a previous sprain so comprehensive attention to a first sprain is critical.

A patient presenting with a sprain will have obvious swelling, discoloration, and point tenderness located in the anterolateral (front and slightly to the outside) ankle.

Physical examination may be difficult because of the pain a patient may be experiencing. X-rays should be obtained to exclude fracture. Also, any evidence of ankle instability should be a tip off that magnetic resonance imaging should be ordered to check for the integrity of ligaments. This last point cannot be overstressed enough since ligament tears, if not attended to quickly, can lead to chronic ankle instability.

For the acute injury, the age-old recommendation of RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) is still recommended. This should be followed until the initial swelling has subsided (generally 24-48 hours). Rest should be done with the leg elevated to reduce swelling. Compression can be achieved using an ace wrap or other ankle support. Ice should not be applied directly to the skin.

Analgesics such as acetaminophen can be used for pain. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) probably should be avoided since they can lead to less platelet adhesiveness, therefore causing more bleeding into the soft tissues.

Early mobilization is important.

Getting the patient active- ambulating- is important in preventing long-term disability.

When the ankle swelling and bruising has settled an active rehabilitation program should be started. A physical therapist can initiate specific treatments for pain relief and swelling such as ultrasound and advise the patient on proprioceptive (balance and proper sensation education) and muscle-strengthening exercises.

A patient may feel instability in the ankle. Strength and balance training will help this improve. Some people need additional mechanical support with orthotics (foot support) and ankle braces.

Athletes who have recurrent ankle sprains should be encouraged to do wobble board training intensively to prevent recurrence. Ankle taping prior to practice and matches or games is advised. There are several good athletic ankle supports available (eg., Swedo, Kalasi, Aircast, etc.)

Severe sprains are associated with ligament rupture, chip fractures, and cartilage injuries should have magnetic resonance imaging. Surgery may be necessary.
