When someone is baiting you, it’s easy to lose your temper. It’s basic human nature, really. But humans also have intellect, and you can use yours to your own advantage.

For instance, if a co-worker is baiting you at work, you can either react harshly, or show your fellow co-workers that you’re a better person than that. You’ll garner respect from your co-workers, and make the baiter both powerless and impotent. In effect, you can turn the tables on them. They’re the ones that will look bad, and deep down, they’ll know that they have treated you unfairly, whether they want to admit it to themselves or not.

Remove Them from Your Life

In some cases, you may have no choice but to remove a mean spirited person from your life altogether. It’s sad, really, but some people aren’t willing to work on their attitudes, and you have to learn to accept that. It’s better to remove the person (not associate with them any longer) than it is to be put under constant emotional pressure.

Seek Help

Often, a mean spirited person can be helped through intervention. A personal life coach or counsellor can often find the root cause, and help the person deal with their issues. There are a myriad of reasons why someone may be mean spirited, and like I mentioned before, they may not even be aware of the reasons why.

Pettiness and mean spiritedness are a part of life sometimes. In most scenarios, you will be powerless to stop the other person from acting the way they are. However, you can take comfort in the fact that you won’t allow them to drag you down with them. In the long run, by being a better individual, and working on this area of your personality, you’ll be the happier person in the long run.

Happiness is up to each and every one of us. We control our surroundings for the most part. Taking personal responsibility for your actions is the road to happiness.

Gallstones -causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Gallstones are solid lumps or stones that form in the gallbladder or bile duct. They are formed when some of the chemicals stored in the gallbladder harden into a mass.

About one in three women and one in five men have gallstones by the age of 75. Some people get just one large stone; others may have lots of tiny ones.

What causes gallstones?

Scientists believe cholesterol stones form when bile contains too much cholesterol, too much bilirubin, or not enough bile salts, or when the gallbladder does not empty completely or often enough. The reason these imbalances occur is not known.

The cause of pigment stones is not fully understood. The stones tend to develop in people who have liver cirrhosis, biliary tract infections, or hereditary blood disorders—such as sickle cell anemia—in which the liver makes too much bilirubin.

Complete or partial blockage can also cause your gallbladder to get irritated and inflamed. If this happens, you will usually have pain for more than 3 hours. You may also get a fever. Your skin may turn a yellowish color, known as jaundice (say “john-diss”).

Gallstones Symptoms

Gall stones usually remain asymptomatic initially.[4] They start developing symptoms once the stones reach a certain size (>8mm).[5] A main symptom of gallstones is commonly referred to as a gallstone “attack”, also known as biliary colic, in which a person will experience intense pain in the upper abdominal region that steadily increases for approximately thirty minutes to several hours.

When gallstones keep blocking a bile duct, you may have pain with fever and chills, or your skin or the whites of your eyes may turn yellow. Call your doctor right away. Having stones in your bile duct increases your chance of having a swollen pancreas (pancreatitis). These symptoms may also be a sign of an infected gallbladder.

How are gallstones diagnosed?

Gallstones are diagnosed in one of two situations. The first is when there are symptoms or signs that suggest gallstones, and the diagnosis of gallstones is being pursued. The second is coincidentally while a non-gallstone-related medical problem is being evaluated. Ultrasonography is the most important means of diagnosing gallstones. Standard computerized tomography (CT or CAT scan) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may occasionally demonstrate gallstones, however, they are poor for doing so compared with ultrasonography.

Treatments and drugs

Laparoscopic surgery. Most often gallbladder surgery is performed using a laparoscope, a pencil-thin tube with its own lighting system and miniature video camera. A surgeon inserts the laparoscope into your abdomen through a hollow instrument (cannula). Only small incisions are required. The video camera then produces a magnified view on a television monitor of the inside of your abdomen. This allows the surgeon to see the surgery in detail.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a recent technique which was introduced in the United States in 1988. The surgeon makes several incisions in the abdomen through which a tiny video camera and surgical instruments are passed. The video picture is viewed in the operating room on a TV screen, and the gallbladder can be removed by manipulating the surgical instruments. Because the abdominal muscles are not cut there is less postoperative pain, quicker healing, and better cosmetic results. The patient can usually go home from the hospital within a day and resume normal activities within a few days.

Medication

In people with a functioning gallbladder, bile salts taken by mouth may dissolve gallstones. However, the process may take 2 years or longer, and stones may return after treatment ends.

Medicines called chenodeoxycholic acids (CDCA) or ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA, ursodiol) may be given to dissolve the stones. Both CDCA and UDCA are useful only for gallstones formed from cholesterol.

The Pain Factor

Last year I told an acquaintance that at the age of 46, I had taken up running. The reply was, “Oh, that’s awfully hard on your knees.” At first I was taken aback. Yes, I knew if I didn’t stretch, warm-up or wear properly fitted shoes, I might experience pain or an injury. But the person telling me this was overweight, had borderline high blood pressure, and never worked out. I wondered if this friend realized by living a sedentary lifestyle, the odds of developing heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and some cancers had substantially increased. Not to mention that being overweight actually placed this person at a higher risk than me for developing knee pain from osteoarthritis and heel pain as a result of plantar fasciitis.

I’m no spring chicken and sometimes my running resembles a dawdling old hen. But I do know it’s necessary to take precautions at any age to guard against injury when participating in physical activity such as running. Because the truth is, sometimes pain happens. When it does, you can either use pain as an excuse or you can use it as a diagnostic tool to help improve and go forward with your performance.

There are three classifications of pain. In simple terms, these can be described as the following:

Nociceptive Pain: felt after an injury to body tissues such as cuts, sprains, broken bones, bruising, surgery, and sometimes cancer. Most pain is of this type.

Neuropathic Pain: resulting from an injury to nerves, the spinal cord or the brain, examples being Phantom Limb Pain and shingles – which affects nerve tissue.

Psychogenic Pain: is related to a psychological disorder where the type, intensity or proportion of pain experienced is greater than the injury. Some chronic ailments may be related to this type of pain.

Pain can also be defined as acute (an immediate response to an injury) or chronic (a pain lasting more than six weeks). The majority of injuries from physical activity fall into the category of acute nociceptive pain. Although some overuse injuries such as Plantar Fasciitis or Runner’s Knee can become chronic if not properly treated or allowed enough time to heal. Most injuries to body tissues are minor and can be treated with nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAID), such as ibuprofen, and ice therapy or R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression and elevation) to decrease pain.

Cuts, bruises, strains, sprains, swelling and inflammation can generally be treated in this way. Severe acute injuries, such as fractured bones and ruptured tendons, should always be treated by a medical professional, as is the case with injuries resulting in chronic, neuropathic and psychogenic pain. If you experience minor pain or inflammation during an activity, this is a good time to evaluate what your body is saying and respond in a positive, strengthening manner. Try asking the following questions:

  1. What particular part of my body is affected?
  2. Does the pain happen only during a certain activity or is it constant?
  3. Am I experiencing pain when running or walking on a certain type of terrain?
  4. Is this a new pain or one that has happened before?
  5. What measures can I take to correct or strengthen the affected body area?

I used this list of questions to understand a reoccurring pain on the outside of my legs. After a little research and a trip to my local running specialty store, I learned the pain was IT Band Syndrome. The IT Band is a long fibrous muscle, located on the outside of the leg. When it becomes inflamed, pain is felt at a point near the knee joint. I knew the pain usually happened when I was hiking downhill for long periods of time and it went away after a few days of rest. This signified several areas of my body that needed work: weak leg muscles, a tight IT Band, and not enough arch support to stabilize my knee during an activity. I have incorporated the following positive measures to help strengthen my body’s weak points:

  1. Wearing well-fitted running and hiking shoes with strong arch support.
  2. Adding leg strengthening exercises to my daily routine.
  3. Wearing neoprene knee braces on a long hike with a lot of downhill climbing.
  4. Increasing my daily stretching routine, with particular stretching for the IT Band.
  5. Doing stretching and warm-up exercises before a strenuous hike or run.
  6. Cross-training: running, walking, hiking, biking, weight lifting and using the elliptical trainer to provide a variety of exercises to all leg muscles.
  7. Using ice therapy immediately after a hike if I feel pain.
  8. Working up to a strenuous hike by doing shorter hikes on hilly terrain weeks before the big day.
  9. Maintaining a normal weight so as not to place added stress on my legs.

Don’t let pain, or your fear of it, be a factor in whether or not you are an active person. Not exercising will result in far worse consequences. Use pain as a guide to become a stronger, more aware and healthier person.

Aromatherapy – Part II: Mind and Emotions

The Sense of Smell forms the greater part of our Sense of Taste (note how your sense of taste and smell is affected when you have a head cold or blocked up nose.) The sense of smell is also affected by pollution, smoking, trauma to the Nose itself and a mucous forming diet).

The sense of smell of our ancient ancestors was far superior to ours. They identified one another by smell as well as sight, and could even detect the usefulness of a plant by its smell. They also tracked animals by smell.
The sense of smell helps us to distinguish between 'good' and 'bad' odors, which tell us if food is fit to be ateen or if there is disease or hygiene present.

ODOURS & DISEASE

A couple of hundred years ago, doctors would use the sense of smell as a diagnostic aid. Arthritis and rheumatism have an acid smell, a good midwife could tell a post-partum haemorrhage by the smell of blood passed, diabetes gives an acetone smell to the breath and the urine, perspiration can give us clues as to the health of the kidneys and Lymphatic system, the smell of faeces also can tell us the type of disease in the digestive tract. Natural medicine still uses this method of diagnosis.

The human nose has the ability to distinguish many thousands of different odors, and the memory of these odors is stored deep in our sub-conscious minds. (See R. Tisserand 'The Art of Aromatherapy' pages 60-73).

When we inhale air molecules which are carrying the 'odoriferous' molecules of an essential oil, these molecules adhere to our Olfactory nerve endings in the back of the nose, producing stimulation of these nerve endings.

Sensory stimulation of the Olfactory center is by a relay of nerve impulses from the sensory nerve endings in the nose to the brain.

This is a very rapid and direct pathway to the part of the Brain which directives, controls, interpretations and responses to sensory input.

This pathway is very different to sensory stimulation of the sensory nerves in the skin which is more complex, being transmitted from a sensory nerve ending to the spinal cord, to the brain, back down the spinal cord, down a motor nerve ending and then to The appropriate organ. For example when we touch a hot object, the heat affects the sensory nerve ending in say the finger. This nerve relays a message along the sensory nerve fiber to its root in the spinal cord. The impulse is transported to the brain. The brain says "ouch !!! that's hot, take the finger off now".

This message is referred down the spinal cord to the motor nerve root, and then to the appropriate muscle (s) organ (s) etc. To remove the finger from the hot object. As you will know from your own experience of touching something hot, there is often a time lag between touching the hot object and recognition of pain.

With the Olfactory Nerve there is no relay station – stimuli goes straight to the part of Central Nervous System called the LIMBIC SYSTEM, and the response is instant. Furthermore, the message can not be blocked by the conscious mind.

The interesting and exciting aspect of this use of Essential Oil Therapy is that different essential oils produce different responses. Some affect the higher thought processes in the Cerebral Cortex by altering the electrical activity of different cortical areas, and some affect the hormone Producing cells in the Limbic System. These 'Brain Hormones' will then either effect the mental and emotional responses of the Brain itself, or will be released into the blood stream from where they may be transported to distant organs to produce the desired effect on the body chemistry.

From something that only body builders used to have, ripped abs have become the holy grail of fitness. And one can not really blame men from working on their abs. With those six packs and those great muscular arms, you will be an instant hit with the ladies just like Brad Pitt.

But it is not as easy as it seems. Like everything else, you need to work on it hard and persist. Commitment is important. It will also take a while before you can achieve such abs. Don’t believe those tall tales about a neighbor losing about fifteen pounds in just a week because of dieting or that diet pill testimonial. Most of these people who have purportedly lost pounds would have starved themselves before they can achieve such a feat and because they have lost pounds so easily, they would have gained them just as quickly.

Avoid Crash Diets

So forget the term “crash diet” because it will cause your metabolism to slow down. What you need is to change your lifestyle, which will help you achieve your health and fitness goals and of course the proper work out and exercise. The answer is always exercise. Too much dieting can be dangerous. After all, even if you have great abs but if you are too tired to walk or to run, you will still not be happy. You need to be both fit and healthy and with ripped abs. So again, diet pills and crash dieting do not work. They will only harm your body and drain you of nutrients and energy.

Another option that most people subscribe to because of fast results is liposuction but this is not advisable. Although it does work, some people will tell you that the fats quickly come back especially if you do not have the discipline to continue with the diet and the exercise. And of course, there is also the money that you will have to spend to get it done.

What To Eat

The first rule is to learn what and when you have to eat. Junk foods are big no-nos. The same goes with beer and fatty foods. As much as you can, cut down on these things and instead eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. You should also eat smaller meals in a day. The practice are said to be quite effective because better digested foods will less likely show on your middle section.

As mentioned, exercise is still the best way to get ripped abs. If you do not have any idea on what exercises to do, then try enrolling in a fitness gym. There are also simple exercises that you can do at home like crunches, sit-ups and push-ups. One of the most effective exercise routine is the lean up. You start by leaning your arms backwards until you touch the floor. Go up and down using this position. This can be quite difficult at the start but if you really wanted to meet your ultimate goal of ripped abs, you will persist. With constant practice, you will get the hang of it eventually. Do the routine for twelve to sixteen repetitions.

Another effective exercise routine is the Hold up, which starts by holding something hard then pulling it over. Afterward, you have to walk around the corner. An example is to hold a pile of books of your desired weights for about five to ten hardbound books then walking around. Maybe you are thinking that holding those books will just tone your biceps and not really your abs. Wrong! As a matter of fact, your abdominal muscles will also be working when you do this routine.

Aerobics

You also have to consider some form of aerobic exercise. Examples of these are running, swimming and aerobic routines. Light weight lifting can also help you tone your body. After doing these, check your metabolic rate because the higher it is, the more energy you will burn even if you are not doing anything. Also, try exercising using dead lifts that had heavier weights.

Another advice, if you want to get that impressive abdomen, is to do a lot of crunches as well as lots of cardio exercises daily with one rest day a week in order to avoid too much injury and pulled muscles.

Our Metabolism at Age 40

Once we get to a certain age, a lot of us simply sit back and wait for the pounds to add on. We are all aware of the fact that middle age means excess weight and hectic lifestyle, but do we know why? Why is it that when we reach age 40 our metabolism shifts from properly functioning to "it might as well not be functioning"? This is a question that lots of people, especially women, battle with on a daily basis.

The fact is that our metabolic rate slows down by 5% for every decade past the age of 40. If our body burns 1,200 calories per day while at rest at the age of 40, at the age of 50 that number will decrease to 1,140 calories Per day. Also at the age of 40, our lives become much more active than ever before. We can no longer spend all of our time on ourselves, exercising and pampering our bodies. By this point, majority of women have families and their own needs get pushed aside. This is means no more time for physical activity and no more time to prepare your own weight loss meals. All of these factors can easily contribute to excess weight.

Another reason why our metabolic rate slows down at the age of 40 is because we start to lose our muscle. Women lose muscle mass twice as fast as men and this impacts their weight gain tremendously. Loss of muscle means less calories burned. Everyone knows that muscle helps us burn calories, even while at rest. So when we lose our muscle our ability to burn calories diminishes very much. These are just a few reasons why our metabolism sufferers after the age of 40. However, it is important to remember that there are many ways to boost our metabolism naturally.

Diabetic Foot Complications and Care

Injury to the foot of a diabetic is the number one cause for amputation to occur and it is 15 times more likely for a diabetic patient to undergo an amputation then a non diabetic. The leading causes of foot disease associated with diabetes include ischemia, infection and sensory neuropathy. Approximately 80% of the patients with a diabetic foot ulcer have peripheral neuropathy. The chances for a foot injury increase due to the lack of ability to feel pain, heat and pressure on the feet. Wound healing is also slowed in the diabetic patient due to the impairment of blood flow.

Hammertoes are found with approximately 50% of those with diabetes; this is a deformity that is created due to motor neuropathy. Hyper-extension occurs in the toes increasing pressure to the metatarsal heads and causing ulceration. This is further complicated because the shifting and thinning of the fat pad beneath the metatarsal heads becomes thin and the cushion is lessened putting these areas at risk for ulceration. The patient is at risk for ulcers, infection and callus formation to occur. Hallux valgus, the abnormal turning of the big toe, also occurs with diabetic patients.

Yet another complication to the diabetic foot is the Charcot foot. This is a diabetic deformity. With Charcot foot the foot becomes painful, swollen and warm. If the foot is continued to be used for walking the result is a collapsed arch and the bottom of the foot becomes rocker shaped.

With sensory neuropathy the ability to regulate skin temperature and normal sweating is lost causing the skin to become dry and atrophic. When these abilities are lost cracks and fissures form putting the patient at risk for infections.

When the sensation is lost the diabetic patient is at risk for injury to the foot due to physical injury, chemical injury, and thermal injury. Without sensation often times these injuries are not treated. There are many things that a diabetic should be aware of that can cause foot injuries; walking bare foot, shoes that don’t fit properly, thermal burns from heaters, hot pads, and water, and caustics burns due to over the counter medication to treat corns. Amputation is often the result of these injuries due to poor circulation.

Ulcers result from continued pressure to an area. Most ulcers on the diabetic foot are found around or over the great toe, beneath the heads of the metatarsals and to the tops of claw toes. Planter ulcers located on the bottom of the foot are caused from walking and or standing. Ulcers located on the top or sides of the foot are often due to pressure from the shoe.

Any break in the skin is a source for infection but for the diabetic patient it could be the beginning of an amputation. Skin breakdown tends to happen with repetitive and excessive pressure. Infection in the diabetic foot is difficult to treat due to poor circulation and decreased immune function. With infection the glucose control is impaired causing higher blood sugar levels and reducing immune defense mechanisms.

Foot Care

All people with diabetes need to wear shoes that protect the foot from injury. The diabetic patient should have shoes fitted by certified podiatrist. Shoes should be one half to five eights inch longer then the patient’s longest toe. Heels should not be higher then 2 inches to keep the body weight from shifting and applying pressure to the metatarsal heads, increasing the risk of ulcers. Shoes that are too tight cause damage to the tissues if worn for more than 4 hours with out relief. Shoes should be changed mid day and evening. The patient with toe deformities will need to purchase custom shoes with wide and high toe boxes and extra depth. Those with Charcot foot will need molded shoes. All new shoes need to have a break in period where the patient periodically removes the shoes and visually inspects to feet for irritation and blisters.

Stocking and socks need to fit well and be appropriate for whatever activity is planned. Stockings should be free of seams, creases and holes to prevent irritation to the skin. Avoid stocking that are tight and have constricting bands.

The following is a list of foot care procedures all diabetics need to adhere to.

1.    Feet should be inspected for dryness, cracking, lesions, corms, calluses, deformities and edema.
2.    Shoes should be inspected for proper fit.
3.    After bathing dry carefully between the toes.
4.    Lotion feet
5.    Keep nails clean
6.    Use moister absorbing power as indicated
7.    Have a usual foot care routine
8.    Inspect inside of shoes for rough areas.
9.    Monitor the temperature of the feet by using the back of hand.
10.    Normal thickness nails can be cut when soft by using toenail clippers and the curve of the toe nail as a guide.
11.    For thickened nails see a podiatrist for trimming.

Diabetic foot care is an important part of managing the effects of this disease. Failure to follow the proper foot care procedures can result in a variety of complications that can result in foot amputation.

Edema Treatment

Edema is the abnormal swelling of some part of the body due to the retention of fluid in body tissues. Most often, when physicians refer to edema, they are talking about swelling of the lower legs or ankles. Edema is not a disease itself. Rather, it is a sign that may be related to illness or injury or may simply be related to an inappropriate life style.

Pulmonary edema is the accumulation of excess fluid in the extravascular space of the lungs. This accumulation might occur slowly, as in a affected individual with occult renal failure, or with dramatic suddenness, as in a patient with left ventricular failure after an acute myocardial infarction. Pulmonary edema most commonly presents with dyspnea.

The causes of edema are many. Edema is a symptom by most inflammations. Insufficient heart action by congestive heart failure can cause edema. A too high intake of salt can cause general water retention in the body. Sitting and standing long in the same position can cause edema in the lower limbs. A still sitting life without exercise can cause or aggravate edema.

Treatment and Prevention

If you know that you are prone to suffer from edema during pregnancy, prevention should be your focus. Your diet is a big part of treating edema during pregnancy.

You should be getting enough protein, as well as paying close attention to your sodium intake. Too little sodium in your diet can cause muscle cramping. However, too much can lead to an increase in all forms of edema, including preeclampsia.

There can be numerous caused for edema; however, the most frequent reason for edema is venous disease. A blood clot or deep vein thrombosis is another common cause of edema. During pregnancy, women retain fluid which causes swelling. There is no need for edema treatment, as the swelling goes away by itself. In women, the monthly menstrual cycle sometimes causes edema, but this does not need treatment.

Now that we have discussed what can cause edema, we can bring up cures for the condition. Should a sufferer’s edema result from any of the less serious conditions and diseases, a simple diet modification may be able to cure it.
