Do you know what's the number one question asked by inexperienced weight lifters when they discover a new exercise? It's " What muscle (s) does that work ?"

Unfortunately, this is probably the least useful question you can ask about a new component of a strength training workout. After all, the body is not simply a collection of parts. Just because muscles are separate and distinct does not mean they exist in isolation.

Actually, the parts of the body work together as one, and they're inseparable. When a new trainee tries to work out one part of the body without understanding this concept, he sets himself up for failure. Do not be the sort of weight lifter who is destined to fail. If you keep in mind a few simple facts, you'll make progress and be well on your way towards success.

Two basic types of weight-lifting exercises

Weight lifting moves can be divided into two categories: compound movements, and isolation movements.

Isolation moves involve only one muscle. They're familiar to most people because so many folks in the gym perform them. Some examples of isolation moves include biceps curls, triceps kickbacks, hamstring curls, and shoulder offerings.

Compound movements, on the other hand, involve more than one muscle. They also require you to move at least 2 joints. Some examples are: squats, overhead presses, bench presses, and pull-ups.

Train movements not muscles

In the long term, it does very little good to use isolation moves. The people who conceptualize weight training as merely the act of training a muscle miss out on the larger picture.

When my three kids were born, I had hoped they would be gurgling Gerber babies who never gave me a moment's trouble. Much to my surprise, they killed and screamed uncontrollably, thanks to what my pediatrician said was colic. He said colic was natural and normal and there was not much I could do about it. Does this sound familiar?

But he was wrong. Colic can be easily and naturally treated, and colic can be just as easily prevented. But first, let's review what colic is and what causes colic so you can understand what to do if your baby experiences it.

The technical definition of colic is uncontrollable crying for unknown reasons. Your baby is not hungry, wet or tired and yet keeps crying seemingly without stopping. The symptoms typically occur later afternoon getting progressively worse into the evening, and in severe cases, extreme crying can persist all day.

If you do a Google search for symptoms of colic, you'll find that it is crying for seemingly no reason and the crying looks to have no correlation to pain. This is not so. Your baby is crying because they are in pain – a lot of pain – and it's much the same kind of pain you experience when you get gas.

But while they can not tell you that they hurt, your baby makes sure you know it by crying (or screaming), kicking their legs and flexing them toward their tummy, clenching their fists and tightly drawing their arms to their torso. In a few years, you'd call this a temper tantrum, but right now it's a real physiological issue, not a psychological one.

Since it's normal for babies to have a little round tummy that sticks out a bit, how do you know if your baby has gas? Just light touch their protruding tummy and if it is extremely hard without any bounce, then there is trapped gas causing your baby pain and distention, just like you when you get gas.

Causes of Colic The first step is to determine if colic is really the problem. If your baby cries for no reason, appears to be in pain, and possesses a tight posture alternating with quick extension of the spell and an expulsion of gas, chances are they have colic.

The next step is to understand the causes of colic. One of the most challenging challenges every newborn encounters is in coming home to a whole new environment. This is very important because air in your baby's stomach will take up valuable room that is needed for food, so even if it takes a while, make sure your baby burps after ever meal.

The third cause of colic is gas-forming foods ingested by you if you're nursing or the ingredients in formula if you're bottle feeding. If you are nursing, you're still eating for two, except now you may need to alter what you eat to meet your baby's special nutrition needs.

Foods for You and Baby When you're nursing, it's best to avoid raw vegetables and foods high in roughage or fiber like whole wheat and corn, apples pears and salads, except for spinach salads which are nicely and easily digested.

Instead, stick to applesauce and cooked vegetables, and foods like nut butters, potato bread, rice, eggs and good protein sources like lean cuts of beef, turkey and fish. Sweet potatoes are also a great source of nutrition for both you and the baby. This routine may make eating boring for you for a while, but it will not last forever and it will help your baby strongly.

If you're bottle feeding, you've got lots of formula choices, and the only way to know which one works best for your baby is to see how your baby responds to a particular formula within an hour of a feeding and after they're ' Ve been burped. Once your baby has burped, they are ready to eat more, and now that the air is gone, they will have room for more milk. Resume feeding for two minutes and then burp your baby again. This burp will not be quite as big as the first one.

Resume feeding. If you're nursing, switch to the other breast and if you're bottle feeding, switch to feed your baby with the other hand. Not only does this give you a break, but alternating back and forth is crucial for your baby's neurological development, so make sure you switch sides every time you resume feeding after burping your baby.

After you have changed sides, your baby may eat as long as they want to. Your baby will get most of the milk they need within the first five minutes of eating, and after that, much of feeding guarantees comfort and play. Then burp your baby; This final burp may be mercely a bubble since all the excess air is now gone from their tummy.

Because the first two burps release most of the trapped air, be sure to take the time at feeding time to elicit a burp. If you do not, you and your family will be paying for it later – usually in the middle of the night when everyone would rather be sleeping. Hidden Burps Here are a couple of tricks to find a hidden burp. First, place your baby over your shoulder and ever so gently, squeeze the lower aspect of their ribs. If your baby squirms or acts as if they have been tickled, there is probably residual air in their stomach.

Work your way from the lower aspect of their ribs all the way up to just below the armpits, continuing to gently squeeze. At the point where they flinch, rub their back from that point upward to coax the trapped air upward and make sure no air is displacing any potential food space.

If you have a receiver burper and you know air is still trapped and just will not erupt, position your baby's head lower than their bottom for about five seconds, then quickly and smoothly bring them back upright.

This will force the air bubble to the top of the stomach much like a construction level. Attempt to burp again and do not be surprised if your baby releases a good belch on their way up.

The third cause of colic is a hiatal hernia which occurs when part of your baby's stomach bulges upward out of their belly and into their chest cavity. Just about every baby has this because of the changes in the way their body now has to process food.

While your baby was in your womb, their digestive muscles did not have anything to do, but now they have to learn how to push food down into the stomach. And when milk hits the stomach, the stomach muscle says, "This is new. What do I do with this?" And it goes into a bit of a spasm as it begins digesting.

When it goes into a spasm, part of the stomach pulls up through the diaphragm into the chest cavity and the lower portion of the stomach remains in the abdominal cavity. This creates an hour-glass configuration of the stomach – the stomach will stick out between the ribs on the center of the stomach and appear as a small water balloon.

To put your baby's stomach back into a normal position, take your thumbs one on top of the other and gently apply pressure downward toward their belly button. Keep repeating the movement from the bars down until your baby's stomach is soft and no longer distracted. Use a very light pressure so the muscles will not tighten up.

Advanced Colic Treatment

The other techniques for relieving colic are using two reflexes in the lower abdomen. One is in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen called the ileocecal valve where the small intestine joins the large intestine and the other is called Houston's valves which are at the lower left. Both of these valves open and close to control the flow of food and waste in the digestive system.

If your baby is in agony and has their legs drawn up toward his tummy, take hold of their right leg and gently flex their thigh toward their abdomen. At the same time, apply very gentle pressure at a spot mid way between the hip bone and the belly button with the pads of your fingers.

It will be very tender and the muscles will fight you if too much pressure is applied initially, so be careful to start slowly and add slight pressure as the stomach softens.

This technique will work even if you do not completely understand what you are doing. The worst that will happen is that you have spent some great time with your baby. The more you do it, the more likely you are to recognize the results and your baby will have nice soft tummy.

Do the exact same procedure on the left side. Bring the leg into the flexed position to take tension off the stomach, and then apply minor pressure at the midpoint between the belly button and the hip bone. Wiggle your baby's leg and play a bit to make it as fun as possible for your baby.

The last spot is the small intestines' reflex point. Apply very easy pressure on top of the belly button directed toward the spine to alleviate any knots that may have developed in the small intestines as the digestive system. When you do this correctly, there will be and almost immediately relief of your baby's pressure and discomfort.

Choosing A Fine Bubble Diffuser – Disc Diffuser – Tube Diffuser Or Panel Diffuser?

Purchasers of fine bubble diffusers for their sewage treatment plant or industrial wastewater treatment plant have a lot of choices to make when selecting equipment for their project.

Diffusers are available in many shapes, including discs, tubes, squares, and rectangular panels, and in different materials, including elastomers like EPDM and porous media like Aluminum Oxide, Porcelain, or HDPE. Many books and papers have been written on the differences between these media.

However there are still many questions about the superiority or application of disc vs. tube vs. panel.

In a retrievable system made of costly stainless steel, the diffuser which can handle the most air with the least stainless infrastructure is going to be an attractive choice. Typically tube diffusers are seen on retrievable systems for this reason.

In a fixed system where the pipes are bolted to the floor, and longevity and low maintenance are required, disc diffusers are more popular than tubes.

Where failure mode is important (i.e. catastrophic vs. slow) disc diffusers may be favored over tubes. Tube diffusers typically have a large air orifice, hence in case of a membrane rupture or clamp failure, a large volume of air can escape from that orifice, starving the rest of the system.

The deeper the tank, the less benefit panel diffusers offer in terms of efficiency. Panels are typically designed to produce very fine bubbles. In a shallow tank, this is a benefit, albeit a costly one since panel systems often carry a hefty price tag due to the amount of equipment required to purchase and install. However in a deeper tank, so much of the oxygen is transferred by the time the bubble has risen 15 ft that the bubble is said to be oxygen depleted, hence the benefit disappears. One must also be cognizant of the headloss of panel diffusers, since what is gained in terms of efficiency from small bubbles is often lost in extra energy needed to overcome the high back pressure of panel membranes.

Regardless of the type of diffuser, one should consider PTFE coated membrane diffusers, which may extend the lifetime of the membrane and will also reduce surface fouling as well.

Type 2 Diabetes – Schools Programs to Help Lower Obesity and Diabetes in Adolescents

Type 2 diabetes has quickly become the biggest epidemic of our time, and it is worldwide. It is no coincidence this goes hand-in-hand with the increase in obesity. According to a report published in February 2017 in the International Journal of Nursing Practice at least one school-based education program shows promise for preventing Type 2 diabetes in adolescents.

Nurses at Al-Zaytoonah University in Amman, Jordan assessed the effectiveness of a 12-week school program to help prevent obesity and the development of Type 2 diabetes in the students. In 2012 students at two unisex high schools, one male and one female enrolled in the study. Two hundred and five students were given an educational intervention while 196 were not. By the end of the study, the intervention group had lost an average of 3.3 kg and lowered their blood sugar levels by an average of 1.36 mg/dL

From the above results, the investigators concluded a school-based preventive educational program for adolescents was useful in actually lowering blood sugar levels and body weight.

There is more good news from Vrije Institute in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and the University of Michigan Health System in Michigan, United States. In September of 2016, the American Journal of Health Behavior reported a study of 2315 6th grade students (about 11 years of age) enrolled in Project Healthy Schools…

  • one group received lessons only, and another
  • group received lessons plus physical activity.

The group receiving instruction plus physical activity…

  • improved their fruit intake,
  • drank fewer sugary beverages,
  • had fewer servings of fatty or sugary foods, and
  • physical activity

than the students given lessons only. The investigators concluded school-based health programs with both lessons and physical activities were likely to improve diet and physical activity.

Another encouraging study was reported on in May of 2016 in the Journal of School Health. Workers at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands assigned Third-grade children to either a 22-week intervention program or a control group. Third-grade children in the intervention group maintained the same body mass index (BMI), while those in the control group increased their average BMI.

Still, more encouragement comes from the University of Texas and Texas A&M University in the United States. In December 2015, Childhood Obesity, the study which included 44 Third-grade students and their 34 parents. The program consisted of both classroom instruction and vegetable gardening…

Parry O’Brien – Shot Put Champion

The year was 1951. At three o’clock in the morning, under the dim lighting of street lights on a vacant lot next door, a young man of nineteen stood contemplating the 16-pound shot put in his hand. This iron ball was his barrier, his Everest, his four-minute mile. Despite his copybook style and powerful arms, he just could not put it farther than 55 feet.

That night he decided to explore simple laws of physics. If he could only apply his strength to the shot for a longer period of time, then surely it would go further. No rules specified which direction a shot-putter had to face when beginning the put or the action of his legs. The only rule he had to comply with was that the shot had to be put not thrown using only one hand.

O’Brien examined the 7-foot circle from all angles and then stood at the very rear–not facing the throwing quadrant as he had done in the past, but facing the opposite direction. This meant that the shot resting on his right shoulder would have to travel a full 180E before he released it, instead of the standard 90E that shot-putters normally used.

He sank low with his weight on his right leg, the shot put resting under his chin. Then he executed a long hop backwards while at the same time spinning his torso a full 180E. When he finally released the shot, O’Brien could feel the added momentum behind it.

In the days and months that followed, while attending the University of Southern California, O’Brien refined and perfected his technique. He studied yoga (“to dig deep into what you might call an inner reserve of strength,” he explained), as well as aerodynamics, religions and, of course, physics–anything that might hold the key to greater distance. He became one of the first track and field athletes to lift weights on a regular basis, bulking up to 240 pounds at his peak with a height of 6’3″.

His cutting-edge style became known as the “O’Brien Glide” and it soon brought him to the front ranks of the sport. In 1953, he set a new world record of 59 feet 3/4 inch. In 1954, significantly just two days after British runner Roger Bannister became the first person to break the four-minute mile, Parry O’Brien became the first shot-putter to exceed 60 feet.

He broke the world record 17 times in his career, ultimately raising it to 63 feet 3 inches. By 3 December 1956, he was famous enough to grace the cover of TIME magazine. In the accompanying interview, he says, “My style is geared to allow me to apply force for the longest time before releasing the shot.”

At the height of his career, O’Brien was undefeated in 116 consecutive meets. He won Olympic gold medals in 1952 and 1956, a silver in 1960, placed fourth in 1964 and retired from competition in 1966 at the age of 34. By that time, his style had been widely adopted.

O’Brien’s workouts were legendary. He took 150 practice puts a day and is quoted as saying, “I don’t quit until my hands bleed, and that’s the God’s truth.” Before a competition, to psyche himself up, he would play tapes that he had made to remind himself of the finer tips of form and style. Rumour has it that the tapes always ended with the catchcry, “And beat them! Beat them all!”

On April 21st, at the age of 75, Parry O’Brien died of a heart attack during a 500-yard Masters freestyle race in California. “He was at lap 11, getting ready to switch, and he stayed at the wall,” said his wife Terry. Managing Stress – Identify Sources Of Stress In Your Life

Stress is an unavoidable part of normal life. Too much may greatly reduce our quality of life and our ability to achieve our goals, both at work and in our personal life. However, the right amount of stress can be a beneficial force, spurring us on to achieve better and better results. We do not need to try to get rid of stress altogether, but many of us can benefit from learning how to manage it more effectively.

Psychological and social stress is a relatively new invention. Our stress reactions have evolved over millions of years to help us cope with much more basic survival situations. In evolutionary terms, it is only the blink of an eye since humans lived as hunter-gathers, sprinting cross the savannah in search of prey, or to escape a hungry predator. We are extremely adept at coping with acute physical stressors of this kind – the flight or fight response outlined to the right is just what we need. We are also well-designed to cope with chronic physical stressors, such as drought, famine, parasites.

Problems arise because our body reacts to psychological and social stressors as if they were physical stressors. The result is that we often react to stress in ways that are inappropriate, unhelpful and harming. The flight or fight response, which is ideally suited to helping us escape a hungry lion, can be disastrous to our health because we switch it on for months at a time, worrying about mortgages, relationships, and promotions. We are in a state of chronic stress.

Identifying Stress

The following four-step exercise will help you to assess sources of stress in your life and your current overall stress level.

Step One: learn to recognise your own signs

Everyone responds in their own way to increasing stress. Some people become progressively more frantic and impetuous, others drag their feet and avoid making decisions. In both cases, stress makes them less efficient. The important thing is to know how you react. The better you know your own signs, the better you will be able to cope with the problem. Learn about yourself by focusing on situations and times when you know you were stressed in the past. You can then learn to recognise your signs early, in order, in future, to take action before the stresses get out of hand. The following questions will help you to recognise your reactions.

Consider each question carefully and jot down your answers.

  • What does it feel like when you are stressed?
  • How does it show?
  • What thoughts run through your mind?
  • What do you do?
  • How does it affect others?
  • How do their reactions affect you?

In order to help you detect stress in your life, use the following list. Go through it carefully, ticking any symptom you recognise. The list is divided into four sections. Most people who suffer from stress find that it affects them in all four ways, so if you mark nothing in one of the sections, you should probably think again.

Beware of discounting the load in a way that many people do, thinking, for example, ‘everyone else copes with at least as much’ or ‘I should be able to manage, I could last year.’ A heavy load, carried for a long time, wears you down in the end, and different people find different things stressful. Discounting your load only adds internal stress to the external load and puts you under more pressure.

Jot down any current stresses in your life.

Step Three: think about recent changes in your life

Changes mean that you need to adapt, so all of them, even if they are for the better, contribute to your level of stress. The demand is obvious if the stress is an illness like arthritis or losing your job, and less obvious if it comes from being promoted or getting married. Even changes that apparently lessen your load, like retirement or readjusting after your children leave home, can be stressful. Changes of all kinds use up energy, leaving you less to spare until you have adjusted to the changes. Moving house is one of the most underestimated of major changes, and can take months to adapt to completely.

Add to your list any changes that have happened to you in the last year. Our list, below, gives some examples of the types of change that we know commonly contribute to stress.

The first antibiotic, Penicillin, was discovered in 1928 by a Scottish biologist named Sir Alexander Fleming while he was experimenting on influenza virus. First, antibiotics cause leaky gut or intestinal permeability, because they so viciously inflame the intestinal lining resulting in the widening of spaces between cells. Normally, the food that we eat is broken down into tiny molecules before they are being absorbed. When we have leaky gut, large molecules of food get through the gut lining into the bloodstream. This triggers the immune system to react, makes antibodies against that food, and result in a food allergy.

Second, antibiotics decimate the population and diversity of good bacteria in the gut. Since 80% of our immune system is in the gut, these good bacteria are our major defense system against all sorts of illnesses. Not only is it important to have a preponderance of good bacteria versus bad, diversity of gut bacterial strains is also critical. Antibiotics are known to reduce the number and diversity of the resident bacterial population in the gut.

What do we do if we absolutely have to take antibiotics? Are there ways we can counter the damages caused by antibiotics?

First and foremost, take a quality probiotic supplement as this will immediately help to reseed some of the good bacteria in the gut.

Check to make sure the supplement contains one or more of these bacteria strains that have confirmed health-promoting features:

Choose one with a higher bacteria count by looking at the number of organisms per capsule, expressed in billion CFU’s. Most brand range from 1-50 billion CFUs. In general, the higher the number, the more potent and expensive it is.

Duration

For the first month after antibiotic use, take a probiotic supplement twice a day, morning and evening. Some supplements are to be taken on empty stomach, some with food. Follow instructions on the bottle. For maintenance, take a probiotic supplement every day.

Apart from taking a supplement, the following are five additional dietary tips to help restore gut health:

1. Avoid Inflammatory Foods

With leaky gut, the gut lining is already inflamed, therefore, it makes no sense to continue eating foods that will cause more inflammation. The worst foods are:

  • wheat
  • dairy
  • sugar
  • deep fried foods

Duration

Stay away from inflammatory foods during antibiotic use and at least 7-10 days after. Best is to avoid for 2-4 weeks so that the gut lining has a chance to completely heal and rebuild.

2. Stewed Apples

Cut up two washed, unpeeled, organic apples into 1/2-inch pieces. Place in a pot with filtered water up to about one-third of the apples. Add a few raisins and some cinnamon. Bring to a boil and simmer for 8-10 minutes until the skin of the apple becomes shinny. This makes four servings.

The magic with stewed apples is the fiber inside the skin called pectin. When it is cooked, the pectin comes to the surface. It acts as a prebiotic (food that feeds the good bacteria) and helps seal the leaky gut.

Duration

Have the stewed apples twice a day for the first week after antibiotic use. Then reduce to once every few days for the rest of the month.

3. Chicken Bone Broth

For those who are not into cooking or have no time to cook, many health food stores do carry pre-made chicken bone broth. However, homemade bone broth still tastes the best.

Place organic chicken bones in a soup pot. Add vegetables (such as onions and carrots) and herbs (such as thyme, oregano, parsley, and bay leaf). Add 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Fill with filtered water. Bring to a boil and simmer for at least 3-4 hours. Season to taste.

Chicken bones are rich in collagen which acts as a prebiotic (food that feeds the good bacteria) and helps seal the leaky gut.

Duration

Drink a cup of chicken bone broth every day for the first few weeks after antibiotic use. For maintenance, drink on a regular basis.

4. Foods That Make Butyrate In The Gut

Butyrate is a fatty acid naturally found in butter, ghee (clarified butter), raw milk, parmesan cheese, animal fats, and kombucha (fermented tea).

Butyrate is also formed inside our gut when the good bacteria feed on insoluble fiber (bad bacteria do not feed on insoluble fiber.) Insoluble fiber passes through our intestines largely intact because humans do not have the enzymes to digest it (whereas soluble fiber forms a gel when mixed with liquid). Insoluble fiber prevents constipation by retaining water in the stool and making it soft and bulky.

Top insoluble fiber foods include:

  • Beans and legumes
  • Nuts and seeds such as almonds and flax seeds.
  • Vegetables such as turnips, parsnips, okra, green peas, artichokes, asparagus, beets, sweet potato, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, corn, kale, bell peppers, onions, and carrots.
  • Fruits such as apple (with skin), pear (with skin), orange, raspberries, strawberries, apricots, mango, prunes, and figs.

(Please note that it is always preferable to buy organic fruits and vegetables as conventional produce is often sprayed with pesticides and antibiotics. However, if organic is not available, it is still preferable to eat non-organic vegetables than not eating vegetables at all.)

Butyrate is crucial to the well-being of our gut because it supports the health and regeneration of cells in the gut lining. In other words, butyrate helps to repair leaky gut. Multiple studies have shown its ability to fight colon cancer – people with higher levels of butyrate in the gut have a lower risk for colon cancer.

Duration

Make sure your daily diet is always rich in insoluble fiber, especially vegetables.

5. Fermented Vegetables

If you are not into making your own fermented vegetables, you can find them in the refrigerator section of many health food stores. Just make sure they have not been pasteurized as all the healthy bacteria will be lost.

Fermented vegetables are very rich in healthy bacteria or probiotics. Each type of vegetable provides a different strain of bacteria. Since diversity of gut bacteria is essential, it is best to eat several types of fermented vegetables, such as sauerkraut, kimchee, fermented beets, and pickled carrots, cucumbers, and onions.

Duration

Eat a forkful of fermented vegetables twice a day for the first few weeks after antibiotic use. For maintenance, eat once a day.

What Are Signs And Symptoms Of Pregnancy

Some signs and symptoms of pregnancy are specific and others are general. To confirm that a woman has conceived, it is better to focus on definite signs. It will certainly help avoid any confusion. It will also enable the mother to get proper care to have a healthy child, when pregnancy is confirmed. Various signs and symptoms are:

Missed Menstruation

Monthly periods are missed, which is the most common sign. But, it can be due to hormonal imbalances as well. It needs to be validated with other indications.

Tender breasts

Bleeding
