Now, I know what you're thinking …

How can something as small as your headline be the single most important thing in your copy copy?

Well, look at it like this:

It does not matter how good your offer is, how enticing a story you write, how powerful your testimonials are, if no one reads your copy.

So the first "win" you have to get when writing copy, is getting your prospects to actually read it.

You do that through your headline.

With me so far?

Good. Moving on.

Now then, how do you write a great sales letter headline?

Well, here's what most people do:

They build a swipe file of all the greatest headlines through history.

Good so far.

Thing is, instead of using these headlines as inspiration for writing their own headline, they literally swipe them word-for-word.

They just add and subtract a couple of words here and there, so it applies to their own product or market. And that's that.

On the face of it, you might think it's clever.

If it's worked once, it's gonna work again, right?

Well, not so fast.

You see, there's a reason those headline worked so well. And it comes down to this:

The copywriters who wrote them knew their markets inside-out.

Specifically, they knew two things:

1) How much the market know of their product.

(This included what the product did, the mechanisms involved, and how well it satisfied a problem or desire they had.)

2) How AWARE their market was of any problem or desire they might have been experiencing at that time.

In his book "Breakthrough Advertising", one of the great copywriters of all time, Eugene Schwartz, called this the market's "state of awareness".

And he said you have to write your headline with your market's CURRENT state of awareness in mind.

If you do not, then your sales letter headline will not hit home with your prospects …

It will flop …

And the people who otherwise would've bought from you, will not even read the rest of your copy.

Which would be a royal pain in the backside, right?

Anyway, there are 5 different states of awareness you have to be aware of. (Get it?)

These are:

Stage 1: Your prospect knows of your product and wants it, but just has not got around to buying it yet.

Stage 2: Your prospect knows of your product but does not want to buy it yet.

Stage 3: Your prospect is NOT aware of your product, but IS aware of a desire he has which your product would fulfill.

Stage 4: Your prospect is not aware of your product, though he has a NEED which has to be fulfilled.

Stage 5: Your prospect is not aware of your product AND he is not aware of any need or desire he has related to what your product does.


You MUST know which stage of awareness your prospects are in, in that moment of time.


Because you have to use a different headline "formula" for each stage.

What are these formulas? Let me tell you …

Stage 1: Your prospect knows of your product and wants it, but just has not gotten around to buying yet.

This one's easy.

All you really need to do in your headline is state the name of your product and a bargain price.

People in this stage of awareness will then buy.

For example, everyone knows what an iPhone is. And there are millions of people who want one, but have not gotten round to buying yet.

If iPhone wrote a headline which said something as simple as:

"IPhone (whatever the latest model is): Now Available At Half Price," people would flock to it.

Thing is, most products do not fall in this category. And if they do not, then this type of headline would stink worse than my balls after ten sets of squats.

On that nice thought, let's move on …

Stage 2: Your prospect knows of your product but does not want to buy it yet.

Things are now slightly more complicated …

But not much more.

Here, you just need to strengthen your headline in one of the 7 following ways:

1) Reinforce your prospect's desire for the output your product can help him achieve.

2) Sharpen the image of your product in action, in the mind of your prospect.

David Ogilvy's famous 'Rolls-Royce' ad headline is a great example of this:

"At 60mph the loudest sound in this new Rolls-Royce comes from the electric clock."

You can now imagine driving a smooth-as-fuck Rolls-Royce, right?

Amazing imagery.

3) Emphasize WHEN and WHERE your prospect can make use of and benefit from your product.

For example, I never bothered with Netflix.

Until, that is, when I went traveling around Thailand and wanted to watch some movies in my downtime.

I did not think I'd be able to get Netflix on my phone.

But guess what? I saw a headline saying there was a Netflix mobile app, and I could stream movies from anywhere in the world.

Of course I then signed up, because I was no longer limited to watching movies in my bedroom back in England – I was able to watch them anywhere in the world, at any time I wanted.

4) Emphasize new documentation or proof that backs up the quality / effectiveness of your product.

5) Mention a new mechanism in your product that makes it "perform" better than before.

6) Mention a new mechanism in your product that overcomes a previous limitation it had.

Eg If there was a brand-new ingredient in a beer that prevented hangovers, that company would be stupid not to mention it in their headline!

7) Finally, you might want to change your prospect's image of your product alike, to remove it from competition and / or to enter a new market.

Lucozade did this.

It used to be a drink people had when they were ill. Then they re-positioned it as an energy drink you can have daily.


Right, that's "Stage 2" on the Scale of Awareness done.

Let's move onto stage 3 …

Stage 3: Your prospect is NOT aware of your product, but IS aware of a desire he has which your product would fulfill.

Remember this:

If your prospect does not know of your product yet, and does not know what it can do for him, do not mention it in your headline.

Got it?


Instead, you should start with the DESIRE your prospect has.

Your body copy must then prove that desire can be accomplished.

And finally, you need to show them that your product is the best / only way they can fulfill that desire.


Stage 4: Your prospect is not aware of your product, though he has a NEED which has to be fulfilled.

This is similar to "stage 3", so we're not gonna spend too much time on this.

Here, you want to name the need and / or its solution in your headline.

Then, you want to really rub salt into the wound so to speak, by making your prospect realize how badly he needs a solution to his need.

And as before, you then present your product as the solution.

Stage 5: Your prospect is not aware of your product AND he is not aware of any need or desire he has related to what your product does.

Right, this is where a top copywriter earns his money.

If your sales letter headline can appeal to people in this category, you should get a ton more sales, and more money in your bank.

Thing is, how do you do it?

Well, as you might've guessed, you can not mention your product.

Nor can you mention a desire – they're not aware of it yet.

Price? Definitely not. At this stage, price is irrelevant too.

So what do you do?

You start with (drumroll please) …


Yep, when addressing a market in this fifth stage of awareness, you need to "call out" your market first, so they can identify with your ad.

If they do not even identify with it, then they will not read on. Fact.

Then, only after they've identified with your ad through your headline, you do the following in your main body copy:

First, you need to make them aware of the problem or desire.

Then, make them realize there's a solution.

And finally, same as before, make sure they see YOUR PRODUCT as the obvious solution.

Anyways, all this might overwhelm you at first. It sure did me.

It's a lot to take in.

But if you can master this one aspect of copywriting alone, your copy's gonna convert better than 90% of your competitors.

Meaning more money for you.

Learn How To Love Yourself

I'm sure you read a lot of times this sentence: you need first to love yourself.
But what does that mean? Is it about getting you a hot chocolate when you're cold? Is it about getting you a new dress when you feel like it? Is it doing whatever you want when you want it? Is it about putting warm clothes on when it's freezing outside?

Loving yourself means to learn to treat you like a loving parent would do with his child.

When you are an adult, and I assume you are, you still have an Inner Child inside you. These are your emotions. At that level you still react like a child of 3-4 years old. Your emotions can not get older or mature. But you can get mature. You can learn how to respect them and how to handle them. You can learn how to take care of this Inner Child.

When you are not aware of your Inner Child, you try to live in an adult world like a 4-year old boy or girl. You feel all alone, afraid of the big nasty world there outside, not knowing what to do, where to ask for help, how to protect you. This is a very difficult way of doing. You will always feel afraid, fearful, doubtable, tired. It is hard to try to survive as a child in a grown up world. You will feel angry and afraid most of the time, and lost.

Why is that? Because nobody takes care of that Little Child inside you.
Let's say your name is Charlotte. You are 42 years old. Inside you lives the little Charlotte. She's four. When you are busy in the outside world taking care of other people, of business, of getting around, of doing a thousand things every day, the little Charlotte will feel overlooked. When you're always running to help others, to make sure their needs are fulfilled, you will be exhausted every night and cry in your bed. Sometimes you will get temper tantrums. You will feel very angry without any reason (but still there is one, a big one!).

All these big emotions are attempts from your Inner Child to get your attention.
Imagine you have, along your children, husband, colleagues, parents, friends, a little four-year old girl named Charlotte. Nobody ever notices her. Nobody takes care of her. Whenever she tries to tell something and get some attention, you shout to her "Shut up!". You say "I have to take care of my parents, my work, my husband, my paperwork, my friends, my other children, my house … I do not have time for you!"

How do you think she will feel? What do you think she will do? First she will try to get your attention by showing big emotions. She will cry a lot, she will scream and shout, maybe she's getting aggressive from time to time. You think you're angry at the outside world, but it is Your Inner Child that is angry with YOU! She's sad and angry because you do not care about her! You act as if she does not exist! Nothing is worse than acting as if Our Inner Child does not exist. This means trying to live as if WE do not exist.

The worst feeling in the world is being unloyal to one's self. Nothing is worse than this!

How many times did we ignore what we felt, to please someone else. How many times did we say to our Inner Child "Shut up, you are not important, the other one is far more important than you are, go away, I do not want to hear you "? Awful is not it? And we do this every time we let come the desire of the other one before ours.

This little Charlotte inside, what will she do? She will give up after a while. After trying a long time to show her emotions, she will give up. She will get very tired of all this and she will say: "It does not matter, she does not love me, she will not get me," and she will get Depressed.

Of course you will think you get depressed because of others, because of your work, because of your children, because of your husband or parents.
It is nobody's fault. But you have to learn how to take care of this Inner Child which is suffering from your lack of attention to her.

When, after getting depressed things still do not change, there's one weapon left to catch your attention: little Charlotte will get sick. Or she will get an accident. Perhaps that way the adult Charlotte will learn to give finally attention to her Inner Child, which is as real (if not more) as a real child of flesh and blood.

You need to learn how to be a loving parent for yourself.

What does that mean?

First you need to develop an Inner Mother. If you were lucky and had a loving caring mother, you can take her as an example. Otherwise you need to invent, to create this Inner Mother, which is your feminine caring energy. Everytime you have an emotion, your Inner Mother should ask your Inner Child: "What happens, my darling?" Listen to what your Inner Child has to say. Than you go on with the dialogue. Inner Mother says: "Come here. Come in my arms, I love you as you are. I love you with what you feel."
Doing that, the heaviness of the emotions will drop pretty much. Than you say these words: "I understand". These words are very important, because most of the time we do not feel very "normal" having the feelings we have and we try to ignore or suppress them, which makes them heavier. "I understand, my darling, come here in your Mothers Arms, I love you."
Stay with these words and feelings for a while, and than ask: "What do you need?"
Whatever the Child answers, you say: "We will ask this of your Father".

And here starts the task of your Inner Father, who is there to protect you and to act for you in the outside world. You would never send a four-year old asking for a raise at work or getting to resolve a conflict at school or with the neighbors, would you? So why do you try it? Send out your Inner Father to take care of whatever you have to do in the outside world. Your Inner Father is your male energy, which enables you to make decisions, to take action, to follow your inner guidance (which is located in you Inner Child, also called Intuition) and to manifest your Child's desires in the world.

When your Child has a need, for instance to call someone or to go somewhere to arrange something, imagine that your Inner Child stays at home with his mother who takes care of his feelings ("I understand you're afraid …") And that your Inner Father (another part of your being) goes out there to act. Your Inner Father is that part of you which is able to handle stress, to take action, to arrange conflicts and all other stuff that has to do with the outside world. If that part is missing because you did not have a good model when you were little yourself, you will have to create and develop it.

Of course your Inner Child, Mother and Father are all parts of you. It is all you. It is just a model to understand what is happening inside you and how you can learn to love yourself.

Loving yourself is listening to your Inner Child, taking his emotions seriously, understanding what he feels and taking action in the desired direction. Loving yourself is having this dialogue with yourself every morning when you open your eyes, every evening when you go to bed, and every time you have an emotion.

Loving yourself is building a strong inner connection with yourself.
It is creating your own loving family, inside you. You will never feel alone anymore. You are already three! Call it your Trinity. Wherever you go, from now on you go with your Inner Family. Your are not alone. You are loved and you are protected. You listen to yourself and take care of that precious little Child that has been waiting for so long to get your attention and love.

This is inner healing.

Most people apply the term catarrh only to the involvements of the nose and throat. However, catarrh may affect any portion of the body wherever there is mucous membrane. Thus there may be catarrh of the stomach and intestines, which is quite common, or of the bladder, and so on. The catarrhal discharge may be considered as merely congealed impurities passed out of the body for its protection. The “inflammation” usually considered associated with this condition as a rule is insignificant. No attention need be paid to it. There is the burden of toxemia that must be corrected, and when it is corrected there will be no occasion for throwing out the waste products upon the mucous membrane surfaces. The normal eliminative channels will take care of them properly.

A leading disturbing cause of catarrh is an excessive amount of clothing, and other factors which prevent normal skin action. One seldom finds catarrh among primitive people who wear little or no clothing. Another chief contributing cause is confinement too much of the time within heated houses or working quarters where the air also is super-dried. One finds little or no catarrh among the Eskimos or inhabitants of extreme northern regions. But explorers of these regions, although free from catarrh while in such regions, may develop catarrh within a few days after returning to the habits of “civilized” life. Insufficiency of fresh air during both day and night is almost certain to lead to the need for some sort of catarrh.

Inadequate bathing will have an effect similar to the use of excessive clothing. If the pores of the skin are not properly active the entire functions of the skin will be retarded. Elimination through this channel will be ineffective, and the waste products that should be eliminated through this medium will have to have an outlet through the mucous membrane.

Constipation leads to the development of catarrh through the failure of one of the chief normal means of elimination, thus making it necessary for the mucus to find another outlet.

In a discussion of diet, it must not be considered that starches and sugars alone and the foods previously mentioned are the sole dietetic causes of catarrh. Too much protein or fats in any form will produce or aggravate the condition, as also will an insufficient amount of water taken into the body. Over-fatigue, when frequently repeated, causes such constant lowering of the vital forces that once catarrh has developed it may be some time before the vitality can be restored.

It may be considered that for those who live in cities or in any place where the air is laden with smoke and dust a slight degree of catarrh is considered by certain persons to be of some benefit, particularly when of the watery type. It will help to carry off a certain amount of foreign elements that otherwise would linger, to cause more or less damage. However, the body usually will be able to take care of these quite satisfactorily if one is entirely free from any catarrhal discharge, so it would be better to be free from this condition.

A condition usually considered as a result of catarrh is involvement of the Eustachian tubes leading to the cars, resulting in catarrhal deafness. The catarrh will not extend to involve these tubes unless the body requires additional surfaces of mucous membrane to keep it reasonably healthy internally. When there is an extension of catarrh from one part to another it can be taken for granted that the underlying causes have continued and intensified, and that the body is merely calling on additional structures for elimination, thus sparing the internal mechanism involvements that will result in serious illness or chronic disease.

Catarrh is usually curable. There are very few diseases more certain of correction than catarrh and yet this condition sometimes lingers on for a discouragingly long time, even under the most satisfactory treatment. One reason for this is that the body takes considerable time to re-establish normal functioning of the natural eliminative organs so that there will be no need for the great demand upon the mucous membrane. Usually it is quite readily eliminated in children and young adults, but is more stubborn in those in middle age and beyond. If there is a fair amount of vitality and will power and there is no disintegration of some of the vital organs or of the mucous membrane, catarrh can be cured in practically every case. The cases that cannot be cured usually are in elderly people, but though these may not fully recover they can greatly improve.

Treatment. In order to eradicate catarrh it is necessary to re-establish not only elimination through all channels, but normal activity of all the vital organs and processes. Usually a person needs np outside help in order to correct this condition. A great many people lose courage easily, especially when relief is not as rapid as they may have expected. No matter how slow the progress may be, one can be certain that a proper program of living will steadily improve the general health and in time there will be a disappearance of any discharge from the mucous membrane.

The fast for a short time is helpful in these cases, but this is one condition where we do not advocate the protracted fast. It seems that the eliminative functions of the body slow down appreciably during the fast, and since the body has more or less of a “habit” of eliminating through the mucous membrane it will continue this habit while the other eliminative organs decline to function. It is better in catarrh that a fruit diet be employed, to keep up elimination through the normal channels and at the same time to more rapidly alkalinize systemic acids and aid in detoxication. If the weight and general conditions permit, a person may remain on the fruit diet for several weeks with benefit. The citrus fruits are preferable, but any fruit except the sweet fruits may be used to advantage. It is well to confine the diet to a smaller quantity of fruit than is required to provide calories to maintain weight and energy. The equivalent of six or eight oranges a day usually will be enough fruit, but if the weight is dropping rapidly or is not high to begin with and if the energy is below normal, up to twice this amount may be taken without detriment. It is very important that a considerable quantity of water be taken, also that the bowels be emptied daily. If they do not function naturally on the fruit, an enema of from one to two quarts of tepid water should be used, and repeated immediately if the results are not satisfactory.

The regular diet should be returned to very gradually, and should consist of fruits of all kinds, salad and cooked green vegetables, with slowly increasing amounts of the root vegetables and, if considerable improvement is noted, very limited amounts of whole grain cereals and milk in some form. Green vegetables and juicy fruits should form the bulk of the diet. Some meals should be exclusively of one or the other.

The question also arises as to the value of the milk diet in catarrh. If a person is much below normal in weight when beginning treatment or after a fast or fruit diet, the milk diet may be used to restore weight, strength and energy to an appreciable degree. A certain amount of mucus is thought by some to be produced by the milk diet, but this diet will never aggravate catarrh. However, it is often as well to continue on a fruit diet for some time, later combining fruit with milk, rather than the strict milk diet. We even leave out milk entirely or largely in many cases. The foods mentioned early in this section as being detrimental should be avoided no matter how ample a diet is provided later on.

It is very important that the body be aided in burning up its waste products, and one of the best means of doing this is through exercise. Another is through restoration of normal skin activity.

There should be daily exercise, preferably sufficiently prolonged or strenuous as to result in increased perspiration. It should be out of doors, at least in part. Long walks are very helpful, especially when there is deep breathing.

To improve the skin activity the cold bath is of great value. The reaction required from this bath is beneficial not only to the skin but to the circulation, to the blood itself, and to every cell in the body. It helps the body to burn up considerable waste material to provide the warmth necessary upon establishment of reaction. Where the vitality is low a moderately cool bath may be used, or it may be necessary to use the hot or warm and cold bath; but some bath below body temperature should be taken practically every day.

As little clothing as possible to maintain warmth should be worn and as little bed-clothing as possible. Bundling up the throat and chest is not a good practice. It is necessary that the air reach the surface of the body at all times. The nude sun-bath should be taken at every opportunity. One should get over the practice of coddling. Friction baths, especially when combined with the air-bath and sunbath, will greatly stimulate the circulation and elimination. One must secure plenty of relaxation and sleep in order that the nerve- tone may be restored to or maintained at normal.

One should bear in mind that when ridding the body of catarrh one is making it more immune to every other disease. Long ago Seneca said, “Man does not die: he kills himself.” Catarrh or the condition underlying catarrh is one of the things that help mightily in this almost universal suicide. It leads to other disease manifestations; and it often shortens life. To get rid of catarrh the patient must put into practice the necessary procedures. Any knowledge is worthless if it is not applied. In the case of catarrh proper knowledge must be applied and continuously applied until the body habits have been corrected and until proper living becomes second nature to the individual.

Health Care Reform – Why Are People So Worked Up?

Why are Americans so worked up about health care reform? Statements such as "do not touch my Medicare" or "everyone should have access to state of the art health care irrespective of cost" are in my opinion uninformed and visceral responses that indicate a poor understanding of our health care system's history, its current And future resources and the fund challenges that America faces going forward. While we all wonder how the health care system has reached what some refer to as a crisis stage. Let's try to take some of the emotion out of the debate by briefly examining how health care in this country emerged and how that has formed our thinking and culture about health care. With that as a foundation let's look at the pros and cons of the Obama administration health care reform proposals and let's look at the concepts put forth by the Republicans?

Access to state of the art health care services is something we can all agree would be a good thing for this country. Experiencing a serious illness is one of life's major challenges and to face it without the means to pay for it is positively frightening. But as we shall see, once we know the facts, we will find that achieving this goal will not be easy without our individual contribution.

These are the themes I will touch on to try to make some sense out of what is happening to American health care and the steps we can personally take to make things better.

  • Universal access to state of the art health care – a worthy goal but not easy to achieve
  • What can we do?

First, let's get a little historical perspective on American health care. This is not intended to be an exhausted look into that history but it will give us an appreciation of how the health care system and our expectations for it developed. What drve costs higher and higher?

To begin, let's turn to the American civil war. In that war, dated tactics and the carnage inflicated by modern weapons of the era combined to cause ghastly results. Not generally known is that most of the deaths on both sides of that war were not the result of actual combat but to what happened after a battlefield wound was inflected. To begin with, evacuation of the wounded moved at a snail's pace and this caused severe delays in treating the wounded. Secondly, many wounds were subjected to wound care, related surgeries and / or amputations of the affected limbs and this often resulted in the onset of massive infection. So you may survive a battle wound only to die at the hands of medical care providers who despite well-intentioned, their interventions were often quite lethal. High death tolls can also be attributed to everyday sicknesses and diseases in a time when no antibiotics achieved. In total something like 600,000 deaths occurred from all causes, over 2% of the US population at the time!

Let's skip to the first half of the 20th century for some additional perspective and to bring us up to more modern times. After the civil war there were steady improvements in American medicine in both the understanding and treatment of certain diseases, new surgical techniques and in physician education and training. But for the most part the best that doctors could offer their patients was a "wait and see" approach. Medicine could handle bone fractures and increasingly attempt risky surgeries (now largely performed in sterile surgical environments) but medicines were not yet available to handle serious illnesses. The majority of deaths remains the result of untreated conditions such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, scarlet fever and measures and / or related complications. Doctors were increasingly aware of heart and vascular conditions, and cancer but they had almost nothing with which to treat these conditions.

This very basic review of American medical history helps us to understand that until quite recently (around the 1950's) we had virtually no technologies with which to treat serious or even minor ailments. Here is a critical point we need to understand; "Nothing to treat you with means that visits to the doctor if at all were relegated to emergencies so in such a scenario costs are curtailed. The simple fact is that there was little for doctors to offer and there is essentially nothing to drive health care spending. A second factor holding down costs was that medical treatments that were provided were paid for out-of-pocket, meaning by way of an individuals personal resources. There was no such thing as health insurance and certainly not health insurance paid by an employer. For the very destitute who were lucky to find their way into a charity hospital, health care costs were the responsibility of the individual.

What does health care insurance have to do with health care costs? Its impact on health care costs has been, and remains to this day, absolutely intense. When health insurance for individuals and families emerged as a means for corporations to escape wage freezes and to attract and retain employees after World War II, almost overnight a great pool of money became available to pay for health care. Money, as a result of the availability of billions of dollars from health insurance pools, encouraged an innovative America to increase medical research efforts. More Americans became insured not only through private, employer sponsored health insurance but through increased government funding that created Medicare and Medicaid (1965). In addition fund became available for expanded veterans health care benefits. Finding a cure for nearly anything has inevitably become very lucrative. This is also the primary reason for the vast array of treatments we have available today.

I do not wish to convey that medical innovations are a bad thing. Think of the tens of millions of lives that have been saved, extended, enhanced and made more productive as a result. But with a funding source grown to its current magnitude (hundreds of billions of dollars annually) upward pressure on health care costs are inevitable. Doctor's offer and most of us demand and get access to the latest available health care technology in the form of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, diagnostic tools and surgical procedures. So the result is that there is more health care to spend our money on and until very recently most of us were insured and the costs were largely covered by a third-party (government, employers). Add an insatiable and unrealistic public demand for access and treatment and we have the "perfect storm" for higher and higher health care costs. And by and large the storm is only intensifying.

At this point, let's turn the key questions that will lead us into a review and hopefully a better understanding of the health care reform proposals in the news today. Is the current trajectory of US health care spending sustainable? Can America maintain its world competitiveness when 16%, heading for 20% of our gross national product is being spent on health care? What are the other industrialized countries spending on health care and is it even close to these numbers? When we add politics and an election year to the debate, information to help us answer these questions become critical. We need to spend some effort in understanding health care and sorting out how we think about it. Properly armed we can more intelligently determine whether certain health care proposals might solve or worsen some of these problems. What can be done about the challenges? How can we as individuals contribute to the solutions?

The Obama health care plan is complex for sure – I have never seen a health care plan that is not. But through a variety of programs his plan attempts to deal with a) increasing the number of American that are covered by adequate insurance (almost 50 million are not), and b) managing costs in such a manner that quality and our access to health care Is not adversely affected. Republicans seek to achieve these same basic and broad goals, but their approach is proposed as being more market driven than government driven. Let's look at what the Obama plan does to accomplish the two objectives above. Remember, by the way, that his plan was passed by congress, and begins to seriously kick-in starting in 2014. So this is the direction we are currently taking as we attempt to reform health care.

  1. Through insurance changes and an expansion of Medicaid, the Obama plan dramatically expands the number of Americans that will be covered by health insurance.
  2. To cover the cost of this expansion the plan requires everyone to have health insurance with a penalty to be paid if we do not complain. It will purportedly send money to the states to cover those individuals added to state-based Medicaid programs.
  3. To cover the added costs there were a number of new taxes introduced, one being a 2.5% tax on new medical technologies and another increases taxes on interest and dividend income for wealthier Americans.
  4. The Obama plan also uses concepts such as evidence-based medicine, accounting care organizations, comparative effectiveness research and reduced reimbursements to health care providers (doctors and hospitals) to control costs.

The insurance mandate covered by points 1 and 2 above is a worthy goal and most industrialized countries outside of the US provide "free" (paid for by rather high individual and corporate taxes) health care to most if not all of their citizens. It is important to note, however, that there are a number of restrictions for which many Americans would be culturally unprepared. Here is the primary controversial aspect of the Obama plan, the insurance mandate. The US Supreme Court recently ruled to hear arguments as to the constitutionality of the health insurance mandate as a result of a petition by 26 states attorney's general that congress exceeded its authority under the commerce clause of the US constitution by passing this element of the plan. The problem is that if the Supreme Court should rule against the mandate, it is generally believed that the Obama plan as we know it is doomed. This is because its major goal of providing health insurance to all would be strictly limited if not terminated altogether by such a decision.

As you would guess, the taxes covered by point 3 above are rather unpopular with those entities and individuals that have to pay them. Medical device companies, pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, doctors and insurance companies all had to "give up" something that would either create new revenue or would reduce costs within their spheres of control. As an example, Stryker Corporation, a large medical device company, recently informed at least a 1,000 employee reduction in part to cover these new fees. This is being experienced by other medical device companies and pharmaceutical companies as well. The reduction in good paying jobs in these sectors and in the hospital sector may rise as previously cost structures will have to be deal with in order to accommodate the reduced rate of reimbursements to hospitals. Over the next ten years some estimates put the cost reductions to hospitals and doctors at half a trillion dollars and this will flow directly to and affect the companies that supply hospitals and doctors with the latest medical technologies. None of this is to say that efficiencies will not be realized by these changes or that other jobs will in turn be created but this will represent painful change for a while. It helps us to understand that health care reform does have an effect both positive and negative.

Finally, the Obama plan seeks to change the way medical decisions are made. While clinical and basic research underpins almost everything done in medicine today, doctors are creatures of habit like the rest of us and their training and day-to-day experiences dictate to a great extent how they go about diagnosing and treating our conditions. Enter the concept of evidence-based medicine and comparative effectiveness research. Both of these seek to develop and utilize data bases from electronic health records and other sources to give better and more timely information and feedback to physicians as to the results and costs of the treatments they are providing. There is great waste in health care today, estimated athaps a third of an over 2 trillion dollar health care spend annually. Imagine the savings that are possible from a reduction in unnecessary test and procedures that do not compare favorably with health care interventions that are better documented as effective. Now the Republicans and others do not generally like these ideas as they tend to characterize them as "big government control" of your and my health care. But to be fair, regardless of their political persuasions, most people who understand health care at all, know that better data for the purposes described above will be crucial to getting health care efficiencies, patient safety and costs headed in the right direction.

A brief review of how Republicans and more conservative individuals think about health care reform. I believe they would agree that costs must come under control and that more, not fewer Americans should have access to health care regardless of their ability to pay. But the main difference is that these folks see market forces and competition as the way to creating the cost reductions and efficiencies we need. There are a number of ideas with regard to driving more competition among health insurance companies and health care providers (doctors and hospitals) so that the consumer would begin to drive cost down by the choices we make. This works in many sectors of our economy but this formula has shown that improvements are illusive when applied to health care. Primarily the problem is that health care choices are difficult even for those who understand it and are connected. The general population, however, is not so informed and besides we have all been brought up to "go to the doctor" when we feel it is necessary and we also have a cultural heritage that has engended within most of us the feeling that health care Is something that is just there and there really is not any reason not to access it for whatever the reason and worse we feel that there is nothing we can do to affect its costs to insure its availability to those with serious problems.

OK, this article was not intended to be an exhaustive study as I needed to keep it short in an attempt to hold my audience's attention and to leave some room for discussing what we can do contribute mightily to solving some of the problems. First we must understand that the dollars available for health care are not limitless. Any changes that are put in place to provide better insurance coverage and access to care will cost more. And somehow we have to find the revenues to pay for these changes. At the same time we have to pay less for medical treatments and procedures and do something to restrict the availability of unproven or poorly documented treatments as we are the highest cost health care system in the world and do not necessarily have the best results in terms Of longevity or avoiding chronic diseases much earlier than necessary.

I believe that we need a revolutionary change in the way we think about health care, its availability, its costs and who pays for it. And if you think I am about to say we should arbitrarily and drastically reduce spending on health care you would be wrong. Here it is fellow citizens – health care spending needs to be preserved and protected for those who need it. And to free up these dollars those of us who do not need it or can delay it or avoid it need to act. First, we need to convince our politicians that this country needs sustained public education with regard to the value of preventive health strategies. This should be a top priority and it has worked to reduce the number of US smokers for example. If prevention were to take hold, it is reasonable to assume that those needing health care for the myriad of life style engendered chronic diseases would decrease dramatically. Millions of Americans are experiencing these diseases far earlier than in decades past and much of this is due to poor life style choices. This change alone would free up plenty of money to handle the health care costs of those in dire need of treatment, whether due to an acute emergency or chronic condition.

Let's go deeper on the first issue. Most of us refuse doing something about implementing basic wellness strategies into our daily lives. We do not exercise but we offer a lot of excuses. We do not eat right but we offer a lot of excuses. We smoke and / or we drink alcohol to excess and we offer a lot of excuses as to why we can not do anything about managing these known to be destructive personal health habits. We do not take advantage of preventive health check-ups that look at blood pressure, cholesterol readings and body weight but we offer a lot of excuses. In short we neglect these things and the result is that we succumb much earlier than necessary to chronic diseases like heart problems, diabetes and high blood pressure. We wind up access doctors for these and more routine matters because "health care is there" and somehow we think we have no responsibility for reducing our demand on it.

It is difficult for us to listen to these truths but easy to blame the sick. Maybe they should take better care of themselves! Well, that might be true or maybe they have a genetic condition and they have become among the unfortunate through absolutely no fault of their own. But the point is that you and I can implement personalized preventive disease measures as a way of dramatically improving health care access for others while reducing its costs. It is far better to be productive by doing something we can control then shifting the blame.

Anyone who has been researching how to make money online for any length of time has probably come across websites or articles that claim that you can make money online in 6 easy steps or that the secret to making money online can is to follow a simple formula. If you submitted your email address to gain access to the “ground breaking” information, then you likely have one version or another of these following steps:

  1. Identify a niche. Identify a hot market, and find a niche within that market. Identifying a niche within a hot market usually means there is less competition, but the money can still be very good.
  2. Look for affiliate offers. Find products to promote on sites like Clickbank that are selling and converting well.
  3. Identify keywords. Perform a keyword research to find out what the best keywords are for selling your affiliate product to your niche market.
  4. Get a website. Get a domain name and hosting company and get your own website or blog. You need a website to act as a central hub for sending traffic, and it’s where you will promote products and display content.
  5. Add content. Begin adding content on your website or blog that is closely related to your niche and that contains your keywords and keyword phrases.
  6. Drive Traffic. Generate traffic to your site using several different sources. Many sources of good quality traffic are free, such as twitter, and Facebook.

There are some variations: Some formulas may not include a website as one of the steps while others will say that you need to start growing a list of email addresses to start marketing to. While there are a few variations, for the most part the steps are basically the same with a few tweaks and differences here and there.

If those 6 steps seem familiar because you have come across similar articles in the past, take heart: There is a process for making money online, and the outline above (and others similar to it) is pretty much it. But then again if they do seem familiar, you probably also know that there is much more to running a successful online business than following a simple formula or taking a series of steps. You know this because even with prior knowledge of the 6 steps you are not yet making money, or certainly not nearly enough.

Even if the 6 steps outlined above are new to you, you can likely still see how the information has little practical use because if you think about it, you actually don’t know what the heck you are supposed to do to get started. What can you take from that formula that will help you right now with building an online business right now? The answer: Absolutely nothing.

Well, there is a good reason for that. It’s because there is a lot they are leaving out. Here is what they are not telling you:

The steps paint the big picture for you. You still need to learn how to get paint on the brush.

You’ve heard it before. Follow these steps, work through this formula, look at my business template, or read my business blueprint, and you will have the keys of a successful online business. These are the keys to a successful online business? Really? Well, if that’s true, we have a problem. Where is the lock? Heck, where is the door??

These steps you are supposed to take, and formulas you are supposed to follow are only useful for those who already know what they are doing and who have a lot of experience and knowledge about internet marketing but need some help putting it all together.

That’s right. The steps are only useful to those that have the know-how to build a business already. They act as a reminder to those who are already up and running what they are working towards so they don’t get caught up in spinning their wheels doing things that won’t make their business move forward. It’s big picture stuff. That’s not very useful when you are at the place where you need to be doing the nitty-gritty, day-to-day things that will get your business up and running.

There is a difference between a 6 step formula and a “to do list”.

There are 6-step formulas, and there are “to do” lists. They are not the same thing. Don’t get caught up into believing that if you know what the steps are to building a business you all but have that online business you’ve been dreaming about.

The reality is that these 6 steps are hardly a roadmap for running an online business. It’s like telling someone how to build a house in 6 steps: You start by digging things up and pouring a foundation, then you build a frame, install the insulation, lay the bricks, shingle the roof, then decorate the inside to that beautiful dream home you’ve always wanted.

Are you ready to build a house? Of course not. The thought of it is utterly ridiculous. Building an online business is no different; knowing the 6 steps is not enough to make it happen for someone who has never done it before. The steps outlined above for running a business are important and necessary, but they don’t help you with the practical aspect of actually doing it. The steps are informative, but are not action-oriented. What you are actually supposed to “do” remains a mystery. You don’t need information, what you need is an instruction manual.

No, a monkey cannot run their own online business.

Some articles and sales letters say that their 10 year-old son did it. I’ve actually read on a few sales letters that a monkey could do what they outline in their steps it’s so simple.

Ouch. Really? A monkey could do it? That’s really not saying much for the vast majority of affiliate marketers who are struggling, and really doesn’t flatter the successful online marketers who could apparently be replaced by monkeys either. The truth is things are generally not easy if you’ve never done them before. Once you’ve had practice and a bit of experience, then things have a chance of being easy.

If you’ve tried to make money online but failed, or just haven’t tried because you don’t want to look like an idiot for not being able to do what a monkey could do, you are not alone.

Since the steps are supposed to be “easy”, many who have tried to build an online business plug away trying to do the steps as best they can. This can lead to disaster.

Referring back to the analogy of building a house in 6 steps we can easily see how. You pick up the nearest stick or, if you are lucky a garden spade, and you start on step one which is digging and laying the foundation. At some point, after 5 minutes, 5 days, or 5 weeks of digging you realize this is taking a lot longer and is a lot harder than you were led to believe. You are burnt out, exhausted, and frustrated, and you probably feel like there must be something wrong with you for not having that foundation built yet because a house is supposed to be built in 6 easy steps, and you haven’t got past step one. Either you give up, or you go out in search of more information. You are subsequently convinced by an expert that the roof is the most important part of a house, and that makes sense to you because it’s not really a house if you don’t actually have a “roof over your head”. So you attempt to learn to put the roof on in 6 easy steps, all the while being just as ill-equipped as you were for laying the foundation, not to mention, without having the rest of your house built.

Others might have gone a slightly different root. You bought into the notion that it takes money to make money, so you went out and bought a backhoe and started digging. You hit some rock, but no worries, you just moved over 50 feet and started digging again. Eventually you dig a hole that sticks and start pouring the foundation. You then start putting up the frame and installing the insulation, but then realize you just built your home next to the city dump, and so off you go to start again in another place. By the time this person gets burnt out, they have dug a bunch of partial holes, and have a lot of half-built flimsy homes, and they have wasted a lot of time and money.

Six easy steps? Maybe, if you have all the skills already and you just had no idea that you could use them to build a house, or in this case to build an online business. Otherwise, the formula, or 6 step approach to making money online is probably not going to do you much good.

The steps do not provide you with the tools or the know-how to get them done.

If you have been approaching your business by plugging away at the steps anyway, you have likely been trying to build a business without the necessary skills and without the right tools. It is quite possible that you have done a lot of work without anything to show for it. You may be burnt out and exhausted and yet you have not made a penny.

If you didn’t give up at this point you might have ventured to do some more research and find out the problem. Perhaps 30 sales letters later and lack of sleep has you convinced that the reason your business is failing because of lack of traffic. After all, it makes so much sense! You can’t possibly make money without anyone visiting your site or affiliate link! So you go out to and try to learn how to drive traffic to a site that is not yet fully developed or is not set up to be converting traffic into paying customers effectively. Have you been sending traffic to a site that’s not conducive to making a sale? Well, there’s really no point in sending traffic to it. It’s like trying to put the roof on before you have laid that foundation.

If you find this sounds familiar, chances are that you have been overloaded with information as you try to find the missing link as to why the 6 step program is not working for you. In the process you’ve managed to get on so many mailing lists to gain access to free information that you dread looking in your inbox. You become inundated with staggering amounts of information, formulas, sales letters, reports, and articles. This is where information overload, or analysis paralysis, sets in. You either spend endless hours trying to sift through the information all the while feeling stressed and overwhelmed at the sheer volume of information, or prematurely jump into something, starting the whole process over again. What happened to the “freedom” of owning your own business? Well, this certainly isn’t it.

The terms “Quick” and “Easy” are used very loosely.

You won’t ever hear it in a sales letter, but each one of these “steps” takes time. Running a business online is a commitment, and many underestimate just how big of a commitment it can be. Yes, it can be done in your spare time, while you work at your regular job, or while taking care of your kids at home, but the less time you have to devote to developing and growing your business, the longer it’s going to take to get it going. If you want to have a site that is monetized and is making money on its own so that you can do these other things, it takes a lot of work to get there. It doesn’t happen overnight.

Finding that Holy Grail is like winning the lottery. You can go ahead and buy every program in hopes that you’ve found the one that will make you an overnight millionaire, but keep in mind that you may buy lottery tickets for years before you get the winning ticket, and the most basic online programs generally cost around $47, but can easily run into the hundreds or even thousands. Ouch! You’ll need that million dollar overnight success just to pay off what you’ve already spent! Don’t fall into that trap any further. Realize that things only become get quick and easy with practice and if you love what you do, and in the meantime, it will take work.

Running a business isn’t free.

They also don’t tell you that working through these steps can cost money. In some cases it is nominal, but even small expenditures can start to accumulate if you make poor choices about how you spend money to build your business.

While some things can be done for free, often you have to pay for the information about how to do that something for free (that seems so counter-intuitive to me). Other times it’s only free if you do it yourself. Again, this is not useful if you don’t know how to do something yourself, like build a website or generate traffic using free sources of traffic. You’ll end up either spending a ridiculous amount of time learning, or spending money to learn. Either way, it’s not really free.

Not only that, it is important to realize there is a trade off. The things that are done for free are often free for a reason; they may be less effective than services and programs that you pay for. There are no doubt some great sources of free information, free advertising, and free webhosting, but some of them can actually end up back-firing if they are not compatible with other tools and services that you will need to draw on later on as your business grows. You will need to do your research to find out what the differences are between paid services and free ones. It is also important to find out if you can seamlessly go from a free to a paid service if and when the time comes.

Also bear in mind that the old adage “you get what you pay for” is not always true; especially when you are just starting out online. Spending large chunks of money for PPC campaigns for example, is not a good use of your money if a number of other things are not already in place. You need to be completely on top of what is going on in your niche, and very knowledgeable of the most effective keywords, and a good understanding of the conversion rates and their implications for your bottom line. Figuring out where your money is best spent takes a lot of research and understanding about how online businesses and affiliate marketing works.

The Cure to the 6-Step Trap

As I mentioned, there is a process to building an online business and the formulas and steps to being successful are often quite accurate.

It’s practicality that is lacking.

To avoid being disappointed, and to save yourself a lot of time and money, focus on where you are in the process of making money online. Do you have a good idea but don’t know where to go with it? Do you have a website but are struggling to fill it with content? If you know where you are then you will be better equipped to search for information, programs, and services that will help you find that piece of the puzzle and achieve success. Read reports, use tools, and (if you choose) pay for programs that have to do with that one aspect of your business.

Secondly, focus just as much energy (if not more) on acquiring the tools and skills to build a business as you do on acquiring knowledge. Information is certainly powerful, but only if you can act on it. Tools, by their very nature, are more action-oriented. If you exclusively search to gain knowledge, like how to generate free traffic, you are more likely going to be paralysed by the sheer volume of information out there. Focus instead on tools you can use to generate free traffic. For example, instead of setting goals like “I am going to send free traffic to my website by learning how” set goals like “I am going to use twitter to send free traffic to my website”. The first is an information-based goal, and will not get you beyond those 6-step programs. The latter is an action-oriented focused more on results. If you do need help on how to do this effectively, you can narrow your research to how to use twitter as a tool to drive traffic, and focus on actually getting that done.

Ultimately, it is important to understand the limited role that some business formulas and 6-step programs play especially when just starting out. They are useful as a gauge to find out where we are, and to identify what we need to work on, learn, or to identify what tools might be useful. For the most part though, focus your energy on the actionable items if you want to actually see results.

Before you speak to your doctor about what pills you can take to treat acid reflux, you may want to consider a few lifestyle changes first. Eat smaller meals, lose some weight, quit drinking alcohol, quit smoking and keep active and awake for at least a couple of hours after meals. These are all sound suggestions whenever you have acid reflux or not.

There are some over the counter drugs that can alleviate symptoms of heartburn such as Pepcid and Zantac. These Histamine Receptor Antagonists work by decreasing the amount of acid in your stomach. If you want to neutralize the acid, consider Mylanta and Tagamet.

– acid reflux can not be cured, but it can be treated and managed if you modify your lifestyle, and with some medications designed to help remedy heartburn

Finally, if there is still no relief from acid reflux symptoms, doctors may prescribe proton pump inhibitors such as Nexium and Prevacid. These drugs prevent the release of acid into the stomach and intestines. Finally, promotility agents, such as Reglan, may be used to force the esophagus to empty more quickly and to speed digestion. Songwriting Tip – Structure of a Pop Song

When it comes to writing pop songs, there is a general formula that is used for the song structure. But before we even approach the specific structure of a pop song, it is important to know the purpose of a pop song because it helps in making the most of the structure.

Purpose of a pop song

The purpose of the pop song is to get the song hooked to listeners as soon as possible and to keep the listener stay interested as long as possible in a span of about 3 to four minutes. This is the age of consumerism where people buy, then get bored, then buy again, then get bored again, and so on and so forth. it’s a cycle. The same goes for pop music today. People listen from finding highly ear grabbing music, then get bored, so they listen to new songs, then they get bored again. So the pop song basically needs three things: familiarity, variety, and a hook.


So with knowing that we want the song we write to hook onto listeners, how does that translate in the structure of a pop song? We have to figure out what doesn’t work first, then lead up to what works and what works well.

Here’s a question. Would a song that was all verses work as a pop song? I don’t think so. Why wouldn’t it work? It wouldn’t work because you would get bored of the song quickly. The verses could be catchy, but if there isn’t anything to change it up, it will get old quick. So what do we do? Add another section.

So the lesson here is to bring variety to the song and stray away from having the song too mundane. But on the flip side, having too much variety wouldn’t work either. For example, if you introduced a new section every time without repeating a section, it would be hard to take in the song. Let’s say I had a song that had the structure A – B – C – D (each letter represents an individual section. In order for the listener to gain some sense of familiarity, he or she will have to hear the song again probably for a couple times even if each section was catchy. But if you had a song that reintroduced sections like A – B – A – B, the listener can gain familiarity within one or two listens. But remember that the song has to keep the listener interested with the hook.

The general structure of a pop song is A – B – A – B – C – B aka verse – chorus – verse – chorus – bridge – chorus. This works so well because not only does it add a sense of familiarity by repeating sections A and B, there is a sense of variety with the addition of section C. Then familiarity is reinforced with keeping a sense of freshness by ending the section with B. This structure of a pop song is effective when the hook is carried in the chorus section where lyrics stay the same each time the section is sung.

You can use A – B – A – B – C – B as the base for your song and add sections to it to add the effects of familiarity and variety. Here are some examples.

A – A – B – A – B – C – B

A – B – C – A – B – C – D – C (This is known as verse – prechorus – chorus – verse – prechorus – chorus – bridge – chorus)

A – B – A – B – C – A – B

There are many options when it comes to the structure of a pop song. Remember that having just the structure of a pop song isn’t what makes a song popular. It needs a hook which is usually in the chorus section of the song. Have fun coming up with your structure!

How to Measure Your Head For Clip-In Extensions

Normally when you purchase hair extensions, you would either walk into a salon or have your hair stylist use his/her best judgment and measuring techniques to get the right sized extensions. In a salon environment, the stylist doesn’t have to be 100% accurate because he/she can always cut and trim the extensions as needed in order to make them blend in with your natural hair.

Another popular method for purchasing the right sized hair extensions is to walk into a beauty supply and a sales rep can help you choose the right sized extensions. They can often remove the extensions from the packaging and hold them up next to your hair to further aid in the measurement adjustments.

When you order your hair pieces on line, you do not get that same face to face customer service. Instead, you will need to properly measure your hair in order to know which size of hair extensions to order.

First we will measure the two middle layers. To get started you should first section your hair by creating a section starting at ear level. The ear level should be about 1/2″ inch below the tip (the highest point) of the ear and secure the top part hair section with a clip on top of your head. Now, take a clothing measuring tape (one that is pliable and bends easily) and measure the nape section of the head which would be from the back of one ear to the back of the other ear. The measurement should be 5-7 inches across. You will need 2 extension pieces that measure 5″ or 7″ in width; meaning the track section that is clipping onto your natural hair and not the actual hair strand length.

Secondly, we will measure the top layer. Keeping your hair sectioned, slide the measuring tape to be approximately 1 inch above the highest point of the ear. Now make sure that you measure this area so that your measuring tape is still raised 1 inch above the tip of the ear but that you want the measurements to be extending just past the ear as if it was wrapping towards the point of where your hairline and face meet. This measurement should be between 8″ and 11″.

Then we will measure the bottom layer. Take the measuring tape and place it about 1 1/2″ from the bottom of your hairline (where the top of your neck and bottom of your hair meets) on the back of your neck. Your tape should start about 1 inch behind the back of one ear to the other. This measurement might be something like 3″ -5″ wide.

Now we measure the side smaller pieces. Section your hair so that you have piled up the top most part of your hair which would be the bangs and a small portion of hair that is on the crown of the head. Now measure the width straight across of where your hairline meets your temple (about 1 inch above your eyebrow) and it ends at the beginning of your ear area. This is usually a measurement of 1/2″-1 1/2″.

Your measurements may look something like this:

1 – Piece measuring 3″-5″

2 – Pieces measuring 5″-7″

1 – Piece measuring 8″-11″

2 – small side pieces measuring 1″- 1 1/2″
