Types of Spinal Cord Injury

Along with brain injuries, spinal cord injuries are among the most severe and life-destroying injuries a person could sustain. In fact, the spinal cord is like an extension of the brain. It is a rope of nerves that runs from the base of the brain (medulla oblongata) down inside the spinal bones to about waist level. The bones (vertebrae) continue on down to the hip area, where we sit on the coccyx. Being inside those bones protects the spinal cord from many potential injuries, and any of those bones can be damaged or chipped without the spinal cord necessarily being hurt.

But an event like a car accident, sports accident, or slip and fall can so damage the spinal vertebrae that the spinal cord may be bruised, pinched, or severed. Then a wide assortment of consequences will happen, depending on how severely the spinal cord is damaged and at which exact point it is damaged.

The Job of the Spinal Cord
The main function is to transmit nerve information from the brain to the body parts and from the body parts to the brain.
• Messages traveling out from the brain are movement instructions, traveling in motor nerves, such as “Jump quickly and catch that basketball!”
• Messages traveling back to the brain carry sensation information, traveling in sensory nerves, such as “Aarrgghh! The coffee’s too hot!”

The spinal cord branches out through the vertebrae to extend throughout the body. These branches are referred to as the spinal nerves, and they exist in 31 pairs – a pair for each spinal bone. One nerve in each pair is a motor nerve exiting from the spinal cord, and the other is a sensory nerve returning from the body to join the spinal cord.

Spinal Cord Segments
When a person sustains a spinal cord injury, the resulting paralysis or disability will be determined by which segment is damaged. The vertebrae are divided into five segments and the corresponding nerve pairs are named accordingly, as, for example, Cervical 1 through 8.
• Eight cervical vertebrae – spinal nerves C1 to C8, controlling the back of the head, neck, shoulders, arms, hands, and diaphragm
• Twelve thoracic vertebrae – spinal nerves T1 to T12, controlling the torso and some parts of the arms
• Five lumbar vertebrae – spinal nerves L1 to L5, controlling the hips and legs
• Five sacral vertebrae – spinal nerves S1 to S5, controlling the groin, parts of the legs, and the toes

The spinal base is one coccygeal bone (several vertebrae fused together).

Complete and Partial Spinal Cord Injuries
A complete injury removes all function below that injury location. There will be no movement and no sensation because the nerve messages that would normally enable them cannot travel past the injury. Quadriplegia (paralysis of both arms and legs) and paraplegia (paralysis of the legs) can result from a complete injury

A partial injury will leave some movement and sensation intact. One side of the body may remain more functional than the other, or one limb will function more than the others. Partial injuries are individual to each person.

Impaired Body Functions
Besides causing loss of movement and sensation, spinal cord injuries can impair any of the body’s functions such as urination, blood pressure, heart rate, fertility, breathing, body temperature, and sweating ability. There will also be secondary complications arising from these initial impairments. Examples of those would be a greater susceptibility to infection, respiratory disease, or stroke.

Auto accidents cause more spinal cord injuries than any other trauma. Other causes are violent attacks, falls, and sports injuries, especially diving incidents.

Treatments of spinal cords are as various as the injuries themselves. When the injury is caused by somebody’s negligence, medical attention is often supplemented by legal advice and representation. If you have suffered a spinal cord injury, or if you have a loved one who has, why not learn more about your legal options by getting a free consultation with an experienced spinal cord injury attorney?

The Unthinkable – Who Survives When Disaster Strikes and Why by Amanda Ripley

“The Unthinkable: Who Survives When Disaster Strikes – And Why” by Amanda Ripley is a fascinating look at the human response to disasters. This excellent book not only describes some of what happened, but look closely at the “why” people respond the way they do in such situations. As Gavin De Becker, author of “The Gift of Fear” states on the front cover, “‘The Unthinkable’ isn’t merely a book about disaster; it’s a book about survival – maybe yours.”

The book consists of an introduction titled “Life Becomes Like Molten Metal” and then eight chapters divided into three parts.

Part one, Denial, includes the chapters Delay: Procrastinating in Tower 1 and Risk: Gambling in New Orleans. Part two, Deliberation, contains three chapters: Fear: The Body and Mind of a Hostage, Resilience: Staying Cool in Jerusalem, and Groupthink: Role Playing at the Beverly Hills Supper Club Fire. Part three, The Decisive Moment, has the final three chapters: Panic: A Stampede on Holy Ground, Paralysis: Playing Dead in French Class, and Heroism: A Suicide Attempt on the Potomac River.

The book concludes with a conclusion titled “Making New Instincts.” Each section of the book consists of not only information on the human condition being addressed, but stories of actual people and what transpired during different disasters. Some of the stories of the heroics displayed during these times are quite moving.

I really enjoyed this book, and appreciate the time and reporting Amanda Ripley put into it. The stories keep your attention and the lessons you can learn from this book just may save your life if you are ever unfortunate enough to be caught in a disaster. The book reinforced some of my habits such as always reading the safety instruction card when I board an airplane, along with looking around and noting the exits, as well as made me think of other habits I can develop to better prepare myself for the worst.

For a fascinating look at disasters and how they effect people, combined with some lessons that may help you if you ever face one, I recommend you read “The Unthinkable” by Amanda Ripley.

Writer's Block – Try This and You 'll Never Be Stuck Again

When I think of writer's block, images of Jack Nickolson slowly going bonkers in that big big old hotel send chills down my spell. But after 20+ years of making my living as a writer, I can honestly say I've never come close to murdering anyone – not even my (ex) spouse – while trying to find the right mix of nouns and verbs to fill an empty Page. I've heard all sorts of advice over the years about how to be a productive writer and frankly, most of it makes me cringe. The idea of setting goals for writing X amount of words or for X amount of hours each day is much too rigid for my taste. After all, I'm a creative soul, not a corporate slave. Do I really need a seminar to develop efficient time management skills? I do not think so. I've never missed a deadline in my life. Have I procrastinated? Sure. Like most professional writers, I spend more time on the hourly French Press ritual than actually writing.

I go for walks, lots of them, because it makes me feel self-righteous about taking care of my health. And occasionally I remember that I have not called my best friend back in Oregon in a while and well, that's just rude so why not chat him up now while I'm thinking of it? But back to the matter at hand: Writer's block. I figured out very early on in my career how to avoid the beast. It's simple yet effective, just a little trick that I play on my own mind whenever: I resist sitting down at the computer, motivation eludes me, or writing feels like work. If you're like most writers, you've left notes for yourself all over the place.

They may be story ideas or bizarre facts or snippets of conversation you overheard at the supermarket or great titles that just need a few hundred thousand words to turn them into best sellers. You never have any trouble scribbling these notes, right? So the next time you feel stuck, grab a mug of coffee and tell yourself you're just going to jot down a few thoughts on the subject at hand. You're not "really" going to write anything today and you're not going to work. Tell yourself that tomorrow you'll look over the notes before you buckle down and get to work. So what happens now? While you're relaxed and not paying attention, your inner writer escapes his cage. He's doing the work for you and it's brilliant! Tomorrow, you'll see what I mean.

I can not tell you how many times I've scribbled my notes while telling myself that I'll clean it up tomorrow, thinking it's just a mess of disjointed thoughts. And on the following day when I take a look at my ramblings I'm blown away by what I've done – without thinking! More often than not, I do not even have to do a rewrite. You've probably heard the advice, "never let the reader see you at work." That's because the harder you try, the more you shut down the natural writer within. So loosen up. Pour a fresh cup. Go for a walk. Chat up some strangers on the street. Scribble some notes. And do not even think about working today. Tomorrow you'll see what a writing genius you really are!

How to Catch a Football – 7 Tips to Becoming a Star Wide Receiver

Catch a football?! That’s easy, you say. You just stick your hands up and grab the football out of the air, right? Not so fast! All that matters in the end is that you catch the football right? Well, not exactly. If you want to be a good receiver, you need to learn how to not only catch the football, but also the proper techniques for catching it. Here is why. If you catch the football using proper technique, it will be easier to tuck it away for running. Not getting the football tucked could result in a fumble. Not only that, but if you use improper technique for catching the football, you will not consistently make catches. You will drop a lot of passes that should have been caught.

Here are a few tips for catching a football correctly.

#1 – If you are facing the ball as it is approaching you above waist height, form a triangle with your two hands, palms out, placing the tips of your thumbs on opposing hands together and the tips of your index fingers on opposing hands together. Your pinkies and other fingers should be slightly spread out, but pointed in the direction of the football. Reach your hands out towards the ball and catch it with your fingers away from your body. Be sure to use your fingers and not your palms. A football that is thrown hard, will often bounce right off of your palms. As the ball makes contact with your body, squeeze the ball and in one swift motion, tuck it under your arm. Preferably you will want to tuck it under the arm that is closest to the sideline and away from defenders who will be trying to strip it from you. Yes, there is a proper way to tuck the ball also. More on that in a later post.

#2 – If the ball was thrown low and you will have to make the catch below waist height, your pinkies should go together, palms up, with your thumbs facing outward. Again, squeeze the ball and tuck it.

#3 – If you are catching the ball on the run and it is coming over your shoulder, reach both hands out, palms up with your pinkies touching, thumbs out, and other fingers extended. Squeeze and tuck the ball as soon as possible.

#4 – Always watch the ball all the way into your hands. When you can see a defender coming with your peripheral vision or hear footsteps, it is tempting to look away, but you must force yourself to concentrate on making the catch. You cannot run with the ball if you do not first catch it.

#5 – Always use two hands whenever possible. Sometimes the only way to make a catch is by diving or using one hand. Most of the time, however it is possible to get two hands on the football. Don’t try to be the hero by making a one handed grab when it was possible to use two hands. No one will think you are the hero, if you drop a catchable pass.

#6 – Be aware of the sidelines. You don’t have to take your eyes off the ball to do this. Just know where you are in relation to the sidelines. The more you play, the better feel you will get for this.

#7 – Practice, practice, practice. You know what they say…practice makes perfect. No. Perfect practice makes perfect. Get your Dad to throw you some passes. Ask him to make sure you are catching the ball using correct form. The more passes you catch, the better you will get. As you get better, have him throw the ball just out of reach, so you can practice diving for it. Have him throw it to you from different angles and at different velocities. If you really want to get good, have your Dad or a friend throw you 200 – 300 passes a day, every day.

Herbal Skin Care – Rediscover a World of Natural Beauty

Have you ever wondered why is it that the best new things look a lot like the best old things? Take herbal skin care for instance. Before the development of modern cosmetics, our grandmothers relied on natural beauty treatments for keeping their skin soft, smooth and healthy. In those days, a herbal treatment for the skin was the best way to achieve and maintain a natural beauty … the likes of which we have not seen in quite a long time.

Women today are wising up to the fact that our grandmothers knew a thing or two about beauty. This is directly reflected in the increasing demand for herbal skin care. Not only do women, and men, want their skin to look good, but they want it to be healthy as well. They are turning away from facial treatments and skin cremes that have been made with slew of synthetic chemicals and asking for a herbal treatment for the skin that they know is natural, safe and effective.

Think about it. Using herbal skin care means putting something on your skin that is safe enough to eat. Would you eat petroleum-based glycerine? But that is essentially what you do every time you use a skin care treatment that contains this, and other synthetic substances. When you rub these chemicals into you skin they will eventually reach your bloodstream just as if you had eaten them.

When you use a herbal treatment for the skin, made of natural, plant-based moisturizers, vitamins, enzymes and proteins, you are "feeding" and nourishing your skin. Well-nourished skin cells are able to go to work to repair, protect and enhance the health and appearance of the skin. This is the basis of true natural beauty.

My grandmother used to tell me amazing stories about her mother's herbal treatment for the skin. She would cleanse her face with a mixture of rolled oats, dried lavender, corn meal and dried rose petals. My great-grandmother also pulverized egg shells in order to create a natural face powder. She lived on a farm and had access to eggs of various shades of brown, so it was easy for her to create a powder that matched her complexion. My grandmother told me that her mother's skin remained beautiful well into her later years.

Make no mistake about it. A herbal treatment for skin is one of those best new things that looks a lot like a best old thing. Our grandmothers were very smart women. If we follow their example by using herbal skin care , then we're sure to rediscover a world of natural beauty.

All You Wanted To Know On Wood Siding

This article talks in great detail about all the types of wood sidings. It weighs all the pros and cons of each type, leaving it up to you to decide if you want to go in for this technique of siding.

Wood siding is the most common type of siding for a house. Wood is a perennial favorite choice for siding. Wether it is vertical siding like board and batten, or horizontal siding like clapboards, shakes, and shingles, there are a few species and grades that are commonly used for all applications.

Different types of Wood Siding

A local builder or installer knows what species are readily available in the regional market. The kinds of wood that are used for wood siding are:

Pine

Pine has long been a standard for exterior wood siding. Pine and its related softwoods-spruce and fir-can be less expensive than other species. Knot-free pine can be difficult to get in longer lengths, though, which can make a project more labor-intensive and costly. Pine holds a finish well, and is preferred when painting or staining horizontal siding. It is typically used for clapboards. Pine is not a rot-resistant wood, so it is important to keep it sealed and well maintained.

Spruce

A member of the pine family, this softwood is readily available in East Coast markets as a substitute for pine. It comes in longer lengths than pine, and has many of the same characteristics. It is typically used for board siding, especially clapboards. Again, since it is not a naturally rot-resistant wood, it is important to regularly maintain and seal the wood in order to make the wood siding last longer.

Fir

Like pine and spruce, fir is used as an economic wood siding option. It comes in long lengths, is easy to cut and install, takes a finish well, and is readily available locally in the West. Like the other softwoods, fir is easily milled to a pattern, be it shiplap, tongue-and-groove, or board-and-batten.

Redwood

Perhaps the hallmark of rich texture and tone, redwood is a good choice for wood siding in all climates. Redwood resists shrinking, so it holds its profile and keeps its joints with little warping or cupping. Redwood has little pitch or resin, so it absorbs and retains its finish very well and requires less maintenance than some other species. Redwood is also naturally insect resistant, not just on the face but through the wood. Grown in the West, redwood can be difficult to obtain in other regions.

Unlimited Information on Wood Siding

A good wood siding should last for many, many years, but it must be properly maintained. Proper maintenance includes power washing, staining and sealing whenever the heat of the sun fades the finish, or moisture starts to turn to mold or mildew. Always allow wood to dry well before applying a new stain or finish. The disadvantage with wood siding is that the wood is extremely vulnerable to swells due to moisture, development of fungus, and formation of holes due to pest attacks and weakening of wood siding due to termite in the wood. Other disadvantages include its high price. This is primarily due to the increased demand and the lack of supply caused by advanced stages of deforestation. An eco-friendly approach to wood siding is vinyl siding , which is low on price, but looks very much like the real wood siding.

With all the different types, it remains practical if you'll try to figure out first what kind of wood siding really suit best to your home needs. Be sure that whatever decision you may make, you are happy with it.

Garden Design Simplified

The sports ad says “Just Do It”. That is exactly the attitude you need to succeed at garden designing. Remember, these ideas or designs you come up with are not set in stone. You can always move plants around your gardens and, as your ideas and taste change, your gardens can grow with you.

There are some simple elements of garden design to keep in mind. When you are designing your garden you are doing so with ‘living art’. Think as creatively as you can. Maybe you are inspired by a garden you have seen on a garden tour (great idea, by the way) or in a magazine or two. Don’t be afraid to borrow.

Remember you are free to try whatever suits your taste. There are no limitations to your own creativity. You answer to the critic within. Have no anxiety about comparison nor fear of failure. To be sure, to be good at gardening requires learning certain skills, but when all is said and done a garden’s beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. Just go for it and let your gardens be the expression of you.

Garden design and its principles used may be called by different names. Still, there are three basic concepts when combined together that will bring about good garden design. Please remember, however, and at the risk of repetition, in the final analysis, your gardens’ design is up to you and should reflect your own personality and flare.

Order, balance and proportion are the basic elements of the garden.

Order is created through symmetry through the technique of repeating plants or colors. Bold or bright additions bring balance as well as adding some texture. Texture is a very important ingredient. Gardens come to life with different textures or as the French say “Viva la difference.” The contrast of adjacent textures can be very exciting.

Think of all your different plants and how they flow together. Think of how bringing them together, through unity and harmony, creates comfort and peace.

When all of the parts of your garden are flowing together, it is captivating and the viewers’ spirit is caught up in the beauty.

By using a limited color pattern, repetition of plants and a clear focal point will create this environment. I’m sure you’ve noticed how theme gardens are very soothing: all one color, or how butterfly gardens can keep you flowing in the visual unity.

Having a focal point is a big benefit for every garden. With no focal point, the eye starts to this way and that without every getting a sense of a main feature. This, of course, will not create the harmony you desire. You also will not any curb appeal and the economic benefits derived from that. Beginning gardeners seem bent on picking the same flowers or foliage over and over again. You can seen them, flat after flat, at box stores and groceries. Aside from color, they really don’t offer much in the way visual interest. Planting an architectural, bold leafed plant, can instantly restore this visual interest and shatter the monotony of likeness.

Last, but not least, we come to color in your gardens. Experimenting with your favorite colors is a good way to see what works best for you. The best advice I know of, and one hard to heed, is to start out with two or three colors and their various shades and keep the artist’s palette limited. New colors can be added as you go as you see what is working or not. This way, you keep the living painting flowing in the harmony you wish to create. You will then have a peaceful retreat that you have created and that you can share that intimate part of you reflected in your garden.

Easy Self-Hypnosis – The Unwinding Clock

Teaching this simple, portable focusing and amplifying Self-Hypnosis technique to my clients over the course of more than 20 years of my hypnotherapy practice has helped them reinforces their desired positive changes.

There are two levels to the Unwinding Clock Self-Hypnosis Technique: giving the mind something to do on one level to distract it, and while it is visually looking off in one direction, you apply the auto-suggestion (mantra, slogan, or affirmation ) Through another channel, in the side door of your mind, so to speak.

Just like a person with insomnia might imagine sheep sheeping endlessly over the rail to distract their mind from what's keeping them awake, you are going to imagine as your visual image the large face of a clock, right up close to your face, almost touching your Nose.

You do not have to remember the actual exact face of a specific clock. You've seen enough clocks so many times in your life to know where the numbers are located; They make it easier to keep your attention oriented in your inner space with your eyes closed.

In a quiet environment, where you will not be disturbed for several minutes, the first step is to close your eyes and roll them up into your head, and work on imagining the number 12 with your mind's eye at the 12 o'clock high Position directly above you.

Simply rolling your eyes up into your head is considered to be the fastest way to induce hypnosis and is like hitting the brain's reset button; That's where your eyes go when you go unconscious.

So with your eyes roled up, you are imagining what the number 12 looks like. It does not have to be perfectly clear; Some people find that saying the number in the mind with the inner voice can be helpful.

And since numbers do not exist in nature, we know by visualizing the number 12, then we've engaged the part of your mind that deals with recall symbols and concepts.

So only once you imagine the number, that's when you repeat your auto-suggestion quietly to yourself, also with your inner voice.

Then you move your eyes counter-clock-wise to the 11 o'clock high position, and look for the number 11. Once you get a hit on the number 11, again, you repeat the same auto-suggestion.

Then on to the number 10, repeating the same auto-suggestion, then 9, same auto-suggestion, and so forth, all the way around to 1 o'clock, having repeated the auto-suggestion at least twelve times and moved your eyes All the way around in your head, which is good "eye yoga".

When you are able to get all the way around in one take, you open your eyes and go on with your day.

Sounds easy … but you are going to find your mind likes to take a hike between or at certain numbers, at various points along the circle, which varies depending upon the person.

Those are like the exit points or "leaks" in your attention field.

The aim here is to achieve unity and generate willpower through reinforcement of your goal or new behavior, and the clock face symbolizes a "circle of containment" of that desired new level of being.

When you are in REM sleep, and your eyes are darting back and forth during your dream state, that is how the brain actually processes information from one side to the other.

With the Unwinding Clock Technique you can make your goal stick by being intentional and methodical with that process, and at the same time, help to improve your focus and concentration, and strengthen your ocular muscles which is useful for preserving eyesight.

So when you realize your mind has wandered off, you bring your attention back to the last number or position of the eyes where you left off, or if you can not recall then back to the beginning, and continue around the clock until you get All the way around to one o'clock in one go.

(Just as a reminder, you are using the same auto-suggestion on each number, not twelve different suggestions, and working on getting around the clock all at once in the least amount of time, not around twelve times, that is.)

It works like advertising for yourself.

And as you know advertising is usually thrown at our eyes during transition moments in our day, when the critical mind tends to relax, like as one TV show transitions to the next, advertisers load up the ads. Or ads appear at "transit" bus stops, in the bus and on the bus as the bus passes by, or in the free magazines that are sent to my office for clients to flip through waiting in the transitional waiting room …

You think those companies would be spending all that money on advertising and marketing if it did not work?

So too, in the transition moments of your day that's a great time to use Self-Hypnosis to self-advertise, like in the morning, when you're in bed awake just before you have to get up, here's an excuse to stay in Bed a few minutes longer, get in one attempt then.

Next around mid-day, lunch time, as the morning transitions into the afternoon, or you're relocating into or out of your lunch break, and you have a few minutes when and where you will not be disturbed, make a second attempt Then.

And then when you are back in bed at night, relocating to dreamland, make a third attempt. If your mind wanders away, and off you go to sleep, no big deal, you just take up the technique again the next morning.

Or, if you are having difficulties getting to sleep, or getting back to sleep if you wake up too early, you can use the technique to get sleep by going around and around the clock without stopping, using the eyes and the auto-suggestion , Until your mind does wander off and you fall sleep.

Since it takes about 21-30 days to learn a new part in a play, expect to use the reinforcement technique three times a day for at least one month for the best results. By then you should reach a tipping point as your new behavior becomes a new habit.

At that point, you can set the technique aside, have it in the wings if you feel some slippage, or you can adapt your auto-suggestion to address some other aspect of your personal growth and continue using this simple Self-Hypnosis technique with the Basic frame work of the Unwinding Clock.

Bookcase Plans – How to Build a Bookcase With 3 Tools

Before committing myself to a set of bookcase plans, I first decided to shop around for a pre-fab bookshelf, both online and at a few discount furniture stores in town. My plan was to look at a wide range of styles and prices before deciding what to buy. It didn’t take me long to discover that I really had only two choices in the matter; buy somewhat expensive crappy particle board bookcases with fake wood laminate, or buy very expensive wood bookcases that will stay in my family for the next 100 years. The good stuff would be nice, but since I can’t afford to spend $800 at Ethan Allen right now, I’m really left with just one option: the somewhat expensive crappy bookcases. It’s disappointing to think this is my only choice.

So now I’m looking at some bookcase plans, which means I’d have to take on the job of building something from scratch. I’m starting to like the idea, though. First, it’s the only other option I can find to buying expensive crappy bookcases, and second, I like the idea of deciding for myself what level of quality (and expense) I want to put into the project. I don’t want a bookcase made from the cheapest materials around, but I don’t need the most expensive either. Building my own bookcase will let me create something between these two extremes.

I’ve done a fair amount of researching on the Web, and I’ve come up with some pretty simple guidelines for approaching this kind of wood project. Overall, the good news is that you don’t have to be a hard-core woodworker to pull this thing off. In fact, a bookcase is a perfect starter project for someone just getting into building stuff from wood. Maybe it’s a little more challenging than making a sawhorse (which is also a good plan to start with), but I think it’s important for beginners to make something they can be excited about when it’s all said and done. So let’s get started with some of the basics of building a bookcase.

Three Tools – I assume that most people attempting their first bookcase project will not have a complete set of woodworking power tools in their shop – things like a table saw, drill press, router table, planer, and all that. What I do think first-time builders might (and should) have is a circular saw, a router, and a power drill. It’s pretty amazing what you can build with just a few reasonably-priced tools.

#1 Circular Saw – A circular saw will cut just about anything you can throw at it, and with a few accessories, some fairly complicated joinery. Even if you decide later to upgrade to more expensive tools, your circular saw will always get used in the shop. For a simple bookcase, you’ll be using the circular saw to cut all the boards to length, and to help make the dado cuts that hold your bookcase shelves. You’ll also use the saw to cut down a 4×8 sheet of plywood for the bookcase back.

#2 Router – I’m sure there are plenty of wood projects being built without the help of a router, but my question is, why go to the trouble? Sometimes you can pick up a decent router for under $100, and considering the extra work you’ll save yourself in the long run, that’s a good investment. A router will make easy work of cutting the dadoes for your bookcase shelves, and with a few accessories, let you try out a whole load of professional-style woodworking techniques.

#3 Power Drill – Everybody has a power drill of some sort sitting around in the basement or garage. You already know how much use (and abuse) this tool gets for literally hundreds of jobs around the house. Although it’s possible to build a simple bookcase without ever picking up a power drill, the no-screws approach to building a bookcase requires that you own an insanely large number of clamps to hold everything together while the glue dries. Really, we’re talking about 20 clamps or more at about $20 each. Ouch. At a fraction of the cost, you can unleash the same clamping power on wood joints by using wood screws (or even nails) to hold pieces together while the glue sets up. Of course, you’ll have holes all over everywhere, but most people just fill them in with putty and they look fine.

Plywood vs Solid Wood Shelves – Choosing the right wood for a bookcase plan can be a big topic to get your arms around, especially if you start reading the zillions of articles online about wood species and wood grades, plywood construction, shelving span calculators, etc., etc. This is all good stuff, but for now, let me narrow down the choices for a first-time bookcase project.

Hold off on plywood shelves… this time around – Sure, plywood is nice for bookcase shelves because it doesn’t have the warping problems that plague solid wood. But plywood comes in 4×8 sheets, which means you’ll be doing a LOT of cutting to make all the pieces for a simple bookcase. For experienced woodworkers, this isn’t really a problem. They’ll first cut down the sheet into more manageable pieces (usually with a circular saw) and then head over to an $800 table saw to get things perfectly square and perfectly sized for the bookcase plan they’re following. Not that you can’t do all this with another tool (like a circular saw or jigsaw), but at some point it just becomes too much work to make a zillion cuts in plywood without the bigger, beefy tools.

Solid Pine Shelves – For first-time projects, I like to use off-the-shelf dimensional lumber from the big box stores like Home Depot. Pine is relatively cheap (compared to hardwood) and is precut to standard-size widths and lengths. That means a LOT less cutting for me to get the basic pieces of my bookcase ready for assembly. Woodworkers might point out that dimensional lumber is inconsistent in width and thickness, which makes less-than-perfect woodworking joints without first planning and/or squaring the boards on a table saw. They’re right. Dimensional lumber is not perfectly square and consistent from one board to the next. But that doesn’t mean you can’t build a decent-looking bookcase otherwise. Sure, you might have some small gaps in the joinery, and maybe the case isn’t absolutely square and plumb. But more often than not, you’ll be the only one who knows any different. Save the more exacting work for nicer bookcase you’ll build next year.

Setting up to Cut Boards – It’s a little frightening to think about how precarious and unorganized a workspace can be when we start cutting boards. No one wants to spend time moving around tables, setting up sawhorses, adjusting work clamps… just to cut off the end of a board. Unfortunately, any less preparation than what I just mentioned will put you in a dangerous situation. Power tools can be evil… and I mean really evil. And it’s not about how much experience you have. Go online and search woodworking accidents. The most horrific stuff happens to people who have been building for 20-30 years without a scratch. Then out of nowhere things suddenly go wrong… boards go flying across the room, arms and fingers get cut, and worse.

Cutting Dadoes for Bookcase Shelves – By far the trickiest step in following bookcase plans is cutting the dadoes (that hold the book shelf ends). No need to be intimidated with this part of the project, though. If you’re really careful about setting up for the cut (that means using the right clamps and cutting guides for your router) this can be the most fun you’ll have with bookcase plans. I like to cut my dadoes assembly-line style. That is, I clamp down both sides of the bookcase side by side… so that each pass with my circular saw (and router) cuts both boards at the same time. This not only saves you tons of time and headache, it also makes sure that your shelves are perfectly aligned when you glue everything together.
