Nasal or Denasal – Do You Know the Difference?

A couple of years ago I wrote about nasality and denasality. Many people get them confused so I’d like to go over it again because of an email I recently received from a man named Paul who lives in England. He wrote:

“Just read one of your articles on getting rid of a nasally sound in your voice. Didn’t think it was a nice opening saying about how frustrating it is listening to someone with a nasally voice, followed by how a study proves this. I’ve suffered all my life with this problem. I’ve tried voice training, allergy tests, and most recently consultations with nose specialists. Turns out I have abnormally narrow nasal passages, which there is nothing I can do about apart from surgery I can’t afford. So I’m stuck with it. Thanks for knocking my confidence even lower, hope you never get stuck with a ‘whiny’ voice.”

Nasality is too much sound coming through the nose; denasality, on the other hand, is the opposite.

1. Paul says he has abnormally narrow nasal passages. From my experience, when one has such a condition (or a deviated septum, for example), the result is that too little – if any – air is travelling though the nasal passages. The sound that results is referred to as denasality. It is the same thing you experience when you have a cold or allergies. Incidentally, denasality is not an offensive sound. It is a somewhat congested sound. There is a man who does voiceovers for commercials in the US who has a most obvious denasal sound.

2. If Paul actually does have excessive nasality, he can easily overcome the problem by producing his words along the floor of his mouth and avoiding his nose. It is also important to note that we do not have the ability to hear ourselves correctly because the sound we hear in our head is distorted – sound vibrating in the solid and liquid of the brain. Paul’s inner ear may be telling him that he has a whiny voice when it is possible that his recorded voice would tell him something different.

3. Were Paul to discover his ‘real’ voice, it would be much easier for him to avoid his nasal passages when speaking because the sound coming from the chest cavity really doesn’t want to be detoured through the nose on its way out.

Denasality is not a problem. Excessive nasality is. Yes, if you are nasal, it might be in your best interest to work on eliminating that sound because too much nasality is like nails scratching on a blackboard and that is not a good thing!

Tonsil Stones and Ear Pain

Tonsils look very much like the glandular structures which can be seen at the throat’s backside and normally consists of tissues with lymphocytes that they prevent and fight against infections.  This is the reason, they are capable of performing like net which trap in bacteria and viruses that pass through throat.  Many medical experts and doctors consider that tonsils as not so effective guards and can lead to formation of various medical hindrances such as tonsil stones and ear pain.

The nooks and crannies of the tonsil can become filled up with different types of bacteria and viruses apart from dead cells and mucus.  They can convert into condensed formation which can further become calcified and hard forming tonsil stones.  The smaller size tonsil stones might not result in obvious symptoms but when they get bigger in size they can result in halitosis or bad breath, ear aches, sore throat, swallowing difficulty and tonsils getting swollen.  In many people, tonsil stones and ear pain can be unbearable.

The formation of tonsil stones can happen in any tonsil part and certain times because of the nerve pathways which are shared by them, they can also cause ear pain even if the tonsil stones are formed far from ears.  Treating this health condition can depend on the severity and kind of tonsil stones.  Most often, the tonsil stones which do not exhibit any symptoms can disappear all by themselves and might not need any kind of special treatment.  People affected by tonsil stones and ear ache can sometimes try to dislodge the stones using picks or swabs all by themselves.

Others can try getting rid of tonsil stones by gargling salt water when it is warm along with vinegar or lemon juice in order to alleviate the discomfort or pain.  It is always better to avoid taking antibiotics as they might lead to various other harmful side effects.  When bigger size tonsil stones exhibit symptoms, surgery might be required but that to weighing all the pros and cons of it.

Tonsils tones not only can lead to ear pain but also can cause eye pain and tooth pain, but they are found in very less people and in very less magnitude.  Once the infection or tonsil stones get treated properly the pain in the eyes, ears and tooth would disappear all by themselves without requiring to treat them separately.  There are various preventive measures which are not only simple to follow but also can be incorporated in the daily regimen

Home Remedies for Curing Tonsil Stones
Tonsillectomy not only can lead to various health problems later but also does not come at a cheaper price.  The surgery can also hinder day to day activities for some time.  Hence, it is avoided most often. In fact, there are natural and scientifically proven ways to get rid of tonsil stones so they never return. It’s absolutely not necessary to go for a long, drawn out surgery or wasting your money on expensive nasal sprays and tablets. Follow a step-by-step program that will show you exactly how to get rid of your tonsil stones naturally and ensure they never come back! Foreskin Fissures – What Are Those Cuts on My Foreskin?

An old myth goes that one hundred men were interviewed about whether they masturbated, or not. It is said that eighty five per cent admitted that they did, and the other fifteen were liars. Listen, it’s yours, so you do what you want with it, but take care of it because it’s delicate and it doesn’t take much rough usage to cause cracks or cuts on the foreskin. Men with a foreskin need to pay more attention to their personal hygiene. It should be retracted and the whole area cleaned at least once every day, for health reasons as well as standard personal grooming. Whether you have a sexual partner, masturbate, or neither, you should pay attention to the inside surface of the foreskin. It is possible that even men who do not pursue personal or partnered sexual relief will still experience erection during sleep, so all men with an intact foreskin should examine it.

Making love frequently with a partner, re-establishing sexual contact after a period of abstinence, dry masturbation, using saliva as a lubricant, or simple nocturnal erections can all cause fissures in the internal surface of the foreskin. They usually take the form of purple parallel lines radiating outwards from the head of the penis to the external rim of the inside of the foreskin. They can be actual surface cracks, or sub-dermal splits. You’ll know if they are actual splits as they sting quite severely. The sub-dermal fissures only hurt when the foreskin is retracted when dry. If they are surface cracks, clean it often – but without soap or other wash products as they only make it worse. Just use warm water, and if swelling or infection set in, see a doctor immediately.

They can be caused by fungal growth from thrush, even if you are not in contact with a sexual partner. Heavy or prolonged courses of antibiotics, or excessive use of oral steroids for conditions such as asthma can create oral thrush quite easily, and using saliva as a masturbatory lubricant will often transfer the condition to the penis. You will usually have a persistent itch around the foreskin as a first sign, and the inside of the foreskin where it’s attached to the head of the penis (the Glans) will be bright pink or red even if there are no fissures present. You can confirm the presence of thrush in your system by looking at the inside of your throat in a mirror. If you have white patches on either side of the throat walls, strange patterns in the skin of the surface of the tongue, or what looks like small pieces of chewed white nuts stuck in the folds of the throat lining, you need to see a doctor for an antifungal treatment.

However, you should also address the possibility that this manifestation in both mouth and penis could stem from a systemic Candida infection that started elsewhere in the body and investigate an anti-Candida diet if the problem recurs.

Just using saliva as a lubricant in masturbation, or not washing the whole area with the foreskin drawn back after ejaculation whether saliva has been used or not can also cause irritation, even without a fungal infection. This is due to enzyme action. Enzymes are contained within saliva as a part of your digestive process. They are also present in sperm. The sperm is like a tadpole torpedo carrying a payload of DNA to the egg. On contact, the sperm breaks open its warhead, and releases enzymes to eat a hole in the surface of the egg to allow it to deliver its payload. If saliva or sperm is left around the head of the penis after either masturbation or partner sex, and trapped underneath a foreskin, the enzymes will tend to begin to act on the surface of the Glans, and the internal surface of the foreskin.

The Glans is pretty resilient, as is evident from the way it becomes desensitized after circumcision, but the internal skin of the foreskin is as delicate as any other skin kept moist. The enzyme action can cause it to thin and lose some of its elastic structure. This in turn will cause it to tighten, and can encourage tearing when stretching it back over the Glans without care.

Fissures can appear even without sexual activity. Most men experience erections in their sleep at some point during the night, even if unaware of them. The foreskin and Glans having been rubbed on the sheets with movement during sleep will be absolutely dry. This can cause the foreskin to stretch violently, and the sub-dermal fissures can easily result.

Whether sub-dermal, or open on the surface, a good hygiene routine will ensure that at worst the condition is a mild and temporary affliction. If there is any sign of oozing, severe redness and inflammation or severe pain, don’t mess around, consult a doctor immediately. There’s no need for embarrassment, yours is unlikely to be the first they’ve ever seen.

As I said at the beginning, it’s yours, you only get one, look after it.

On the 10th Day of My Prescription HCG Diet

It’s my 10th day on the Prescripton HCG Diet. I’m starting to see why it is known as the Prescription  HCG obesity cure since I’ve already lost 9 pounds. That’s really quite impressive.

I woke up this morning and weighed myself. I was at 162.2 pounds. Dang it. I wasn’t even down a whole pound. And that’s since the day before yesterday since I missed weighing myself yesterday.

So I had to run through yesterday and see if I did something that I shouldn’t have done. Yesterday I was really pretty good about only eating Prescription HCG approved foods so it’s not that.

I decided that I need to watch my portions.

I’ve been having a lot of soup and I think maybe I’m overdoing the portions. So I’m going to be more careful from now on. And again…I think I could drink more water.

I decided that I don’t like my original idea of carting the huge cups of water around with me. I’ve spilled a few and since they’re HUGE they make a huge mess. So far I’ve had to sop up large amounts of water from the living room carpet, a stack of books in my son’s room and the laundry room floor. That’s just annoying so I’m switching to water bottles.

So I’ve been carting around a water bottle.
I did take my Prescription HCG injection this morning. And I took my B-Total Sublingual before lunch. (I usually take it in the morning, but I was having a lazy morning so I waited for my energy boost until I was actually going to get up and about for the day).

For lunch I had leftover soup (an appropriate portion).

Since it’s Friday my daughter had a friend spend the night. I had grilled chicken and asparagus. I was going to save my fruit for a late night snack while the kids watched movies, but then I had a sugar cookie breakdown.

The kids asked if they could make Christmas cookies and I thought that sounded like a fabulous idea (I momentarily forgot that they’re my favorite and I was not allowed to have any). So as punishment I didn’t have my fruit that evening. I’m not sure if that was the smartest response, but it seemed logical.

It wasn’t the best Prescription HCG day. But I’m getting right back on track tomorrow for sure. I’m sure the HCG obesity cure can still help me out even though I messed up and probably won’t lose any weight tomorrow. I have to say that the sugar cookies didn’t taste near as good when I knew I wasn’t supposed to have them!

Natural Juices Not As Healthy As May Seem – Study

Natural juices are rich in fructose, unlike water or low fat milk, according to Dr. Richard Johnson from the University of Florida College of Medicine. Researchers believe that fructose may trigger obesity for humans.

Previous studies connected excessive drinking of soft drinks and fruit juices with a high risk of diabetes, blood pressure, or obesity, said Johnson. Glucose sends signals to the body to produce insulin, a hormoneBMI calculator, calorie counter, carbs counter, calorie calculator, diet planner, menu planner, workout planner, weight loss, weight loss tools, nutritional information, nutrition labelone that tells the brain when to Stop eating and turns sugar into energy. Fructose does the opposite and causes resistance to insulin, said Johnson.Weight gain may appear when large amounts of fructose are consumed over a long period of time, according to Peter Havel, an endocrinologist at the University of California.

Some natural juices have larger amounts of sugar than sodas. For instance, apple juice has more fructose than a soda, said Havel. A cup of apple juice has twenty more calories than the same amount of soda, according to the Department of Agriculture Nutrient Data Laboratory.

High-fructose corn syrup or fructose may lead to high levels of uric acid in the body. Dr. Johnson and his research team showed in a previous study on lab mice that a high-fructose diet leads to insulin resistance and the body produces more uric acid. Glucose does not cause the same problems, said Johnson.

Too much natural juice may also increase the children's risk of bone fractures.

Has Your Baby Seen a Chiropractor Yet?

The earlier you start chiropractic adjustments the better off you will be for the rest of your life. When babies are born, passing through the birth canal can be a traumatic event for the body. Doctors and nurses can add to it by pulling and pushing in order to get the baby fully into the new world. It is very easy for the spine or other adjoining bones to slip slightly out of alignment.

This brand new little spine – aligned or not – is what that child will have to grow from. Our Spine and the nerves housed in and around are our life-line to our brain. It is responsible for every system and organ, every conscious and automatic action. When in alignment it all works perfectly. But putting a kink in the line slows or stops electrical impulse, leading to problems. Sometimes a baby who constantly cries or fusses is not just a fussy baby, they are legitimately uncomfortable due to a misalignment.

Babies can be adjusted as early as the first day of life. Though it is a good idea for all newly arrived children, here are some symptoms you may notice which are signs that they could benefit from an adjustment:

Future dental work can be avoided by your new baby visiting a chiropractor. They can adjust the roof and palate of the mouth allowing teeth their very best shot at coming in straight.

Arching of the back – Babies natural shape is an adaptable flexible body position which allows them to hug tight to their mother. If your baby seems stiff or keeps arching, it may be a sign of pain or tension.

Trouble breastfeeding – If your baby is having trouble latching on comfortably or can only tilt their head to one side an adjustment can help increase the range of motion.

Colic – Though there is no known accepted medical cause, often times an adjustment will help them feel better overall and ease the body’s tension and sooth them to stop crying.

Tilted head – If your baby has a tilt to their head or rotation it can indicate restricted neck movement. This can also contribute to flat spots on the head. Seeing a Chiropractor should help unlock a full range of motion.

Constipation / Diarrhea / Sick to the Stomach – Possible ileocecal valve that needs to be adjusted. If it is stuck open, these are exactly the symptoms it will cause.

The Love Of The Game

In all the years of competitive sports whether as an athlete or coach defined the character of what I was and what I was to become. Reaching that pinnacle of ability whether it was on the track or baseball field, the basketball court, or the pool those ever so fleeting moments in the sun honed my persona to a level I thought I’d never become. Even after an athletic career I somehow knew the next obvious step.

In athletics especially in an era unlike today when I was just starting out baseball was the game everyone played. It didn’t matter if it was rain or shine it seems we were always outside. A quick learner I became not only from my father but those little league coaches that were so instrumental in teaching not only the fundamentals of the game but how to behave with dignity and grace especially when we eared or just fell flat on our face.

Life lessons that I learned from an athletic career has carried me well all through the years. When I look around today many times I am appalled from what I see. There is too much emphasis put on winning at all costs. Professional sports is partly to blame. It really is now a far cry from yesterday. Most of the blame though comes from the media where TV revenue has far exceeded everyone’s expectations When so much money is now involved has actually corrupted the integrity of the game. This corruption has now been passed down to our youth that come to play. Too many are caught up idolizing and immortalizing many professional players whose own disposition cares little for the game except for the money and fame.

Now as I look back to my younger playing days not a harsh word or a temper flared. The love of the sport, giving it our all, just playing the game no matter if we won or lost all things were the same. As I travel around today I have noticed too many playing fields sit empty and bare. With no one around where bases were loaded with nobody out the playing fields have now gone silent. Those standing in the stands cheering for all are all just distant memories now.

Those fields of dreams of yesteryear have been replaced by a new breed. Lost is the joy of playing for the love of the game, money and winning are now to blame. There has been a sharp decline of personal and professional behavior of athletes today. A lot different than when I played. The professionalism and comradely we had has now given way to a self absorption where too many are consumed with monetary compensation without the slightest regard for teammates, competitors and the fans. Lost is the sense of fellowship that we all had back in the day.

As for those playing fields that sit empty today many can say the cultural shift has not come a long way. The health of a nation where we were once strong and proud has morphed into self serving crowd. Too many are caught in unhealthy choices today. The rate of obesity continues to expand. Where once the youth were so physically mobile it wasn’t a surprise that the health of our nation was on the rise. But those days are gone and many forget what it was like to just play for the love of the game.

What has replaced playing for the “love of the game” to now where too many athletes whether professional or collegiate have adopted a self serving attitude where they agree to play just because of the money or scholarships being offered. When this happens as so often today these athletes now expect the adoration, the attention and the publicity to be bestowed upon them and not because of their ability, their respect for other players, coaches and fans. It is because of the amount of money that has now come into play. If they failed to exhibit the professionalism that really should be displayed when individuals achieve that level of athletics it matters not.

Many of my generation can remember their first completion. The excitement, the exhilaration and the respect we had for ourselves our coaches and other competitors made us all realize that just being able to compete was an unbelievable experience. Whether we won or lost wasn’t the issue. Our coaches realized that winning wasn’t that important. But, just being able to strive to do your best is what competition should be all about. Sure everyone likes to win, but even if you lost and many times I did as long as you gave it your all you are actually a winner in every sense.

It has come to pass that too many high school and collegiate athletes are lured by the prospect of lucrative professional sports contracts. Too many have already succumbed to the temptation to forgo a collegiate career or stop short of graduation and opt for that professional contract only to realize that once their career is over or an injury prevents them from competing they are left with very little qualifications to embark upon a career outside of sports. Most of these individuals are not mentally, emotionally and educationally able to comprehend the scope of the responsibilities that are involved in professional sports contracts.

What has occurred today in professional sports is that they have really encouraged a type of behavior that is most unprofessional by the athletes themselves. We’re not saying all professional sports athletes have fallen into this type of behavior but the media surely has continued to exploit some individuals to where the general public actually further encourages student and professional athletes toward behavior that is most unprofessional.

“For the love of the game” or sport! A time so distant. The days when players and athletes actually played and competed because of the enjoyment of the sport itself and not because of how much money they are paid. It is in professional sports thought that winning is the objective. The key is to recruit the caliber of players that when they actually play and compete to the best ability they can they will produce the winning effect that is important in today’s professional sports.

Aspiring young athletes today have to be taught restraint and to resist the temptation of forgoing and education in the pursuit of lucrative sports contracts that seem like a sure bet when actually it is a short sighted and misguided attempt to interrupt an individual’s life process. What really matters is students and student athletes participation in sports are held accountable for their behavior on and off the playing field. They are responsible to show a level of personal esteem and portray courtesy, respect, and a genuine fellowship toward everyone. This is what we were taught when we were young. Sad to say this is what’s lacking today by too many accounts.

On the Paradox of Finding Comfort in Low Confidence

If you know anyone with low confidence, you’d want them to feel more confident, right?

However, things aren’t always that simple.

Low confidence is a lot like depression. In that it has that one counter-intuitive paradox to it:

Depression and low confidence holds us back. But for that same reason, they can actually feel safe.

Indeed, confidence can be scary!

… Well, actually, it’s not confidence in itself that’s scary. On the contrary, confidence is the antithesis to being scared.

However, if one has low confidence or none at all, the IDEA of having it can sometimes be quite frightening.

Indeed, if you have low confidence, confident people can come off as brash, intimidating, and careless towards other people’s sensitivities.

Therefore, staying in your “safe spaces” can seem all too easily obvious. You don’t speak up; you tend not to disagree; maybe you don’t even get out much.

Ultimately, your low confidence can end up as a sort of trusted companion to you. Because not taking any risks can seem safe and secure.

And – you guessed it – here’s what’s wrong with that… :

Deep down and honestly, beyond all the fear, doubt and superficial comfort, we all know that we want more than that. Some of us might even know that we actually CAN DO better than that.

But taking action can be scary. Because often, we wouldn’t know where to start. Nobody told us. How would we know?

And what if we mess it all up beyond repair?? We could ruin our reputation, right?! And other people would maybe LAUGH at us!!

Here’s what we all need to realize:

The biggest risk is not taking any action at all.

Altogether now:

Only when we’ve made it fully clear to ourselves that our perceived comfort in low confidence is by far the bigger evil can we move towards action.

And the good part is that often, the biggest difference is not what action we take, rather than the fact that we take action in the first place.

See, if we truly want to get confidence, we gotta start by getting used to taking action. And, popularly speaking, this means, get off your ass and deal with your circumstances.

But no, really: If you don’t take action on your own behalf, who do you expect will do it for you?

Nobody will! Your parents won’t be around forever. And your friends’ support, however generous, only goes so far. Their food budget isn’t yours, and you can’t stay on their couch forever. (Or, indeed, any couch.)

And of course, this only applies to those lucky enough to have parents and supportive friends. Not everyone is.

Whatever the case, it really is up to you to take action.

This week, stretch yourself. Challenge yourself in an area of your life where you have particularly low confidence. (And if that’s “all of them”, just pick one.)

If you’re anxious about approaching other people, do it. Ask a stranger for directions anywhere and exchange a few words in the process. If you feel like you could have done a lot better, do it again.

Getting our of our comfort zone is the true killer of low confidence.

Forehead Sweating – The Top 5 Causes

Some things are easy to hide like the helm that comes a loose from your pants. Then there are other things like hiding forehead sweat and that’s like trying to stop the rain. And as hard as it is to keep profuse sweating unnoticed, imagine how impossible it is to camouflage forehead sweating. What’s even worse is sweating starts without warning. Your face begins to get hot from the inside out. Next, you start to shine, then beads of sweat begins to roll down your face. Last but not least, you are sweating like a fire hydrant, full force with no cut-off valve. This common occurrence for excessive sweating sufferers is irritating and aggravating, not to mention embarrassing. Unfortunately, the common causes of forehead sweating are everyday activities in most of our lives.

Most people don’t really know that excessive sweating affects 3 percent of our population. Part of the reason for that is because our medical professionals didn’t see it as a serious problem. When patients would schedule an appointment because of excessive sweating; we’ve heard, some reported sentiments such as: go home and stop complaining. Those professionals were obviously uninformed and didn’t realize the psychological side that’s associated with over-sweating.

Most likely if you are a victim of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), you may have experienced this. While modern medicine still doesn’t quite know exactly how to stop excessive sweating or what are common causes, there are clues from other sufferers that have gone before you.

There are many causes that seem to bring about forehead sweating, listed below are a few of them. Keep in mind that they will vary from person to person.

Anxiety: Anxiety is the body’s natural response to danger, an automatic trigger that goes off when we are under pressure. A few symptoms of anxiety; racing heart beat, stomach butterflies and the jitters.

Stress: Stress is an emotion that’s unavoidable. We all experience stress in our daily lives. However, chronic stress can be very detrimental to our over-all health.

Anger: Unless you are Mother Theresa; anger is something that you have experienced. Anger normally builds up fast and ferocious. It’s normally a gut reaction to a situation or problem.

Fear: Fear is a crippling emotion. It’s an emotion of thought. Many times we are fearful of the unknown. We become fearful when we lose the ability to think rationally and logically.

Excitement: Building excitement takes a lot of energy. Burning the necessary amounts of energy causes our bodies to heat up and once we heat up, the brain reports to the nervous system. It sends a signal to keep us cool and this process is known as sweating.

There you are, 5 underlying causes of forehead sweating. Emotions are one of the main causes of forehead-sweating. The average person has a tendency to sweat when they are nervous, stressed, angry, excited or anxious; but those that suffer from excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) will NO Doubt sweat. And more than likely it will show all over their face.

Atypical Depression – Symptoms and Treatment of Atypical Depression

Atypical is one subcategory of Depression. It has its own symptoms and its own treatments although they are similar to treatments for Typical Depression. We will compare the symptoms of Atypical Depression and Typical Depression and the treatments for Atypical Depression.

Atypical Depression is marked by mood reaction with an elevated mood when good things happen. Increased eating occurs along with an increase in your weight. Too much sleeping and sensitivity to being restored may also occur. More sensitivity in interpersonal relationships, chronic dysphoria-feeling intension hopelessness is possible. It appears more in women with more disability and restricted functioning. Women may make more use of health services. Childhood neglect and sexual abuse occurs more in this form of depression.

Typical Depression symptoms include Insomnia. Weight loss and insufficient eating may occur. There may be a reduction in sleep and a possible feeling of hopelessness although not as intense as in Atypical Depression. One might also be somewhat lethargic.

Treatments of Typical and Atypical Depression

Psychotherapy may work with up to 60% of patients at ten weeks in treatment. It can help with the sleep and eating issues. It can also benefit issues of rejection and any other issues that may be contributing to your Atypical Depression. In typical Depression Psychotherapy works well and in mild cases may be all that's needed.

MAOIs- Monomine Oxidase Inhibitors are effective treatments more so in Typical Depression. Due to a possible Tyramine reaction, patients are placed on extremely rigid diets. This causes them not to be the first choice in treatment.

Trycyclics are an older form of antidepressant medication and have been used in both Atypical and Typical Depression. They have extremely serious side effects. Prozac worked about as well as Trycyclics with fewer side effects.

Herbal Treatments are used to treat depression. They work well in mild to moderate cases but studies still need to be done on their benefits in more severe cases such as Atypical Depression. Herbal supplements include herbs, vitamins, minerals, and other nutritive substances. They most often come in capsule form. They must be made to pharmaceutical standards. The ingredients' metabolic path at the molecular level should be examined and the interactions of the ingredients noted. This ensures their effectiveness, purity, potency, and safety.

Atypical Depression is more debilitating than Typical Depression with more women than men being diagnosed with it. The treatments for it are very similar to Typical Depression. Both are treatable but with different effects.
