One of the questions I’m asked most often is whether the prostate should be milked or not. Years ago doctors used to milk the prostate for various medical reasons. Men have often used it as part of their sexual practice. But there is much to know about milking the prostate or prostate massage that is not commonly known.

It doesn’t matter what method you’re using. There is a significant chance of doing permanent harm to the prostate. There are risks. It’s not a natural function of the body.

If you have acute prostatitis there is a condition that can occur called Fournier’s Gangrene. This is an infection with serious consequences. Another problem is you can get septicemia. Septicemia is blood poisoning. This is often a fatal disease; you don’t want to get that. Other problems you might encounter are hemorrhoids. You can damage the urethra, which is where urine passes through. Now if you have prostate cancer and don’t know it you could be causing cancer cells to move out of the prostate gland into your bloodstream or lymphatic system. This is called metastases and you would have metastatic prostate cancer.

Types of scoliosis


Scoliosis is not a disease, rather the word is a term used to describe any abnormal, sideways or lateral curvature of the spine. Viewed from the back, a typical spine is straight. The spine curves to either side as a single curve shaped like the letter C or “c-shaped scoliosis” or the spine has two curves and is shaped like the letter S or “s-shaped scoliosis”… rarely the curve can be a triple.

Curves are classified by many different components such as their location in the spine.They can occur in the upper back (cervical spine scoliosis), in the middle back (thoracic spine scoliosis) and in the lower back (lumbar spine scoliosis) in various combinations. Thoracolumbar scoliosis is curvature that includes vertebrae in both the lower thoracic and upper lumbar portion of the spine. Curves can also be defined as left thoracic or right thoracic.

Dextroscoliosis is a spinal curve to the right (“dextro” means right). Usually occurring in the thoracic spine, this is the most common type of curve. It can occur on its own (forming a c-curve) or with another curve bending the opposite way in the lower spine (forming a s-curve). The reason dextro is most common is that the body instinctively avoids the heart which is located to the left of the midline of the torso.

Levoscoliosis is a spinal curve to the left (“levo” means left). Common in the lumbar spine, the rare occurrence of levoscoliosis in the thoracic spine indicates a higher probability that the scoliosis may be secondary to a some kind of pathology such as a spinal cord tumor or chiari syndrome.

Kyphosis is a curve seen from the side in which the spine is bent forward. There is a normal kyphosis in the middle (thoracic) spine. Kyphoscoliosis is the abnormal curvature of the spine, both sideways and towards the upper back. Lordosis is a curve seen from the side in which the spine is bent backward. There is a normal lordosis in the upper (cervical) spine and the lower (lumbar) spine.


Idiopathic scoliosis occurs in approximately 4% the population. The term idiopathic means a condition or disease with no known cause. Idiopathic scoliosis is by far the most common cause of scoliosis. Idiopathic scoliosis rarely causes pain. Once scoliosis is detected it should be closely monitored by a scoliosis professional. That expert will initiate a proactive plan to ensure the curve does not progress, and if possible will be reduced and stabilized.

Idiopathic scoliosis is divided into three subgroups according to age: infantile (0-3 years), juvenile (4-10 years), and adolescent (11- maturity)

Juvenile Idiopathic Scoliosis

Juvenile onset scoliosis is defined as spinal curves diagnosed between ages 3-10. It less common than adolescent scoliosis but still makes up one-fifth of scoliosis cases. Juvenile idiopathic scoliosis is very different from infantile and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Accurate diagnosis is essential.

Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis occurs in children age 10 to 18 years old, and comprises approximately 80% of all cases of idiopathic scoliosis. This age range is when rapid growth typically occurs, which is why the detection of a curve at this stage should be monitored closely for progression as the child’s skeleton develops.

Adult Idiopathic Scoliosis

Once skeletal maturity is reached, a patient with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is now said to have adult idiopathic scoliosis. A patient with Adult Idiopathic Scoliosis will still benefit from treatment for progression, but pain is a much more common indication for treatment. Normal degenerative changes of the spine may be accelerated by curvature and the patient may be at higher risk for skeletal pain or extremity pain due to nerve compression.

Adult Scoliosis

Not to be confused with adult idiopathic scoliosis, Adult Scoliosis or Adult Onset Scoliosis is a Degenerative scoliosis, or a side-to-side curvature of the spine caused by degeneration of the facet joints. Degenerative scoliosis occurs in older adults, most frequently in people over age 65 . Typically a C-shaped curve forms in the lumbar spine. It can occur due to arthritis in the spine, Spondylosis. Weakening of the normal ligaments and other soft tissues of the spine combined with abnormal bone spurs can lead to an abnormal curvature of the spine. The spine can also be affected by osteoporosis, vertebral compression fractures, and disc degeneration. Other potential causes include spine tumors such as osteoid osteoma, a benign tumor that can occur in the spine and cause pain. This pain causes people to lean to one side to reduce pressure on the tumor causing spinal deformity. Degenerative scoliosis is the most common form of scoliosis in adults.

Other types of Scoliosis Classifications

Nonstructural (Functional) scoliosis: a curve in the spine, without rotation, that is reversible because it is caused by a condition such as: pain or a muscle spasm or a difference in leg length. In this type of scoliosis the spine is normal, but an abnormal curve develops because of a problem somewhere else in the body.

Neuromuscular scoliosis: there is a problem when the bones of the spine are formed. Either the bones of the spine fail to form completely or they fail to separate from each other during fetal development. This type of scoliosis develops in people with other disorders, (i.e. birth defects, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, or Marfan’s disease. People with these conditions often develop a long C-shaped curve and their muscles are unable to hold their spine straight. If the curve is present at birth, it is called Congenital Scoliosis This type of scoliosis is often much more severe and needs more aggressive treatment than other forms of scoliosis.

Compensatory scoliosis: is a spinal curve in the coronal plane which disappears when the patient sits. It may be caused by either a short leg or a pelvic tilt due to abduction or adduction contracture of the hip.

The location of the structural curve determines the classification of the scoliosis e.g. a structural curve in the thoracic spine with a lumbar compensatory curve is called thoracic adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Structural curves in both the thoracic and lumbar spine are called double major curves.  The health expert said that all human beings occasionally have difficulties to reconcile or maintain sleep, or the feeling that it didn’t remove the fatigue when awake. Too much sleep and depression

Another very common sleep disturbance is insomnia, which is, having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, without interruption, all night.

When a sleepless complains about waking up without being able to return back to sleep, the root cause of the disorder can be a depression. For yet unknown reasons, depression has as one of its major symptoms an alertness in early morning and the inability of the patient to go back to sleep.

Treatment, in this case, should focus on the alteration of mood. When antidepressant therapy is successful, sleep problems disappear.

Some problems related to sleep

1-More hours of sleep during the winter months

Seasonal affective disorder occurs in a lot of people during the winter months. It is characterized by depression, loss energy and enthusiasm, decrease in sexual interest and the increase of sleep. It is more pronounced at extreme latitudes. Light and temperature are important factors in the control of our internal body clocks. The days of winter are shorter, by what we prepare to our body to “hibernate”. From a physical point of view, there is no need to increase the hours of sleep during the winter. Sleep more during the winter months in fact, aggravates the symptoms of the seasonal affective disorder. However, the seasonal affection is curable. 3-Lack of exercise

 Daily exercise increases your body temperature, allowing you a greater drop in body temperature during the night, which improves the quality of sleep. Sedentary activity may cause a slight increase in the duration of sleep.

4-Poor diet

Food habits and habits of sleep go hand in hand. A poor diet is usually filled with fat and artificial foods that reduce your energy and make you feel more tired. Malnutrition means bad energy. Poor power means more hours of sleep. In addition, artificial processed foods (known as junk food) are more difficult to digest. Don’t eat preprocessed foods before going to bed. Why not? However, the best is to start with a healthy attitude towards sleep. Start by learning to appreciate and enjoy a good night’s sleep for 8 hours (chronic insomniacs would love to have much sleep from time to time). You do not force the situation, excessive sleep may indicate that your body needs rest to heal itself or recover, try to reduce sleep can make the underlying problems worse.

Is depression curable by sleeping a lot?

There are many questions like this: does sleeping a lot cure depression? They have to be consulted by people who are not aware about the causes of sleep much and this is one of them.

Avoid depression, sleeping with the TV off

Sleeping with the television on can increase the risk of depression, reveals a study in the United States, which ensures that the optimum level of light that the brain of mammals need to rest is surprisingly low.

In this study, conducted by researchers at the Ohio State University, it´s worked with 16 hamsters, of which half slept in complete darkness while others were exposed each night to a light level equivalent to that produced by the glow of a TV on in a dark room.

Eight weeks later, the animals that never slept in the dark had been altered mood and developed a degree of depression. When scientists examined their brains, it was found that they had a lower density of dendritic spines in the hippocampus area in neurons than those who slept without light. This means that communication between their nerve cells would have been reduced.

The promoters of this study indicate that the optimum light level that needs the brain of mammals to rest is surprisingly low. Also they associated with the effects of the light exposure to a hormone called melatonin, which is produced when the body detects the darkness.

Melatonin among other things, regulates the circadian circle, and helps to fall asleep. If there is too much ambient light, the body could produce inadequate amounts of this hormone.

Good habits

Beyond relationship between sleep and depression, and their therapeutic approaches, the quality of sleep always can be optimized according to the rules of sleep hygiene.

Here are tips on habits and behaviors that help to achieve optimal sleep overnight.

  • Keep a regular schedule for rising and bedtime throughout the week.
  • Only use your bedroom as a place of rest, relaxation and just sleeping. Don’t bring work to do in bed. Remain with the mind very active and lying for a long time prevents sleep.
  • Go to bed only when you feel very sleepy.
  • Establish rituals of relaxation before going to sleep, like a good bath hot tub and a light meal or a few minutes of reading.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Avoid intake of caffeine in the afternoon (tea, coffee, cola beverages, cocoa, and chocolate). Also alcohol and cigarette, as both interfere with the achievement of a good sleep.


Below we mention some of the most basic recommendations and practices to treat chronic insomnia anxiety:

–        Ensure that the bedroom is quiet, dark and cool. Noise, light and heat can interfere with sleep.

–        Establish a regular sleep schedule. Our body really works like clockwork and is very healthy to support it while respecting the time sleeping and getting up every day, to create a rhythm.

–        Avoid NAPs. Taking a NAP during the day can make it harder to fall asleep at night.

–        Delete the pressure. It is preferable to address each night with low expectations, receiving nightly that passes as a new opportunity to sleep, so they are only a few hours of sleep. In this way we removed the pressure that we are forced to sleep.

–        Avoid a high stimulant activity before bedtime. This includes watching television, playing video games or using the computer before bed.

–        Control your light. The brain produces a hormone called melatonin, which helps regulate the cycles of sleep and wakefulness (and the biological clock in general). The production of this hormone is controlled by exposure to light. If you do not receive enough natural light in the day or receive plenty of artificial light at night, this will have a direct effect on your ability to sleep.

In fact, also according to the CDC, there were 9.6 Million non-fatal injuries in the senior population due to falls, in the year 2015. An additional 33 thousand were fatal in that same year. (Go to the site for sources). These facts are clearly sobering but even more concerning since so many of these falls take place at home and could easily be prevented.

Contributing Factors to Home-based Falls

Seniors and others that have lost some level of independence face many challenges in the home, some intrinsic and others extrinsic, some related to home safety and some, surprisingly, related to caregivers. Here are some common factors that we all need to keep in mind:

  • Loss of full motor control
  • Medications that cause drowsiness and or dizziness
  • Home-safety issues that increase the dangers of mobility
  • Improper support devices to aid mobility
  • Lack of ongoing, appropriately paced physical activity

Of all of these clearly the easiest to eliminate or mitigate fall into a single category above: Home-Safety issues. This is probably the most critical of all of these since the elimination of any items in this category is likely to profoundly and significantly reduce the risk of falls in the home.

Caregivers and Their Role in Home Safety

Family caregivers or hired caregivers, for seniors and others, need to be acutely aware of fall-risk dangers in the home and help those in need of assistance avoid these dangers. Caregivers need to be proactive by ensuring the safety of those they care for through awareness, communication and correction of hidden and/or obvious home dangers. This can be accomplished through vigilance and involvement. For example caregivers should try to put themselves into the shoes of those they care for and predetermine what challenges they face in and around the home. It is challenging enough for those in need of care to merely accept their position of aging, disability or otherwise, and therefore caregivers need to be sensitive to the feelings of seniors and others while still be vigilant in keeping the home safe. Caregivers really do need to behave as unsung heroes or angels, operating in the background, and without making seniors or others in care feel worse for their loss of some independence.

Risk Mitigation and Steps to Safety

The CDC as well as other sources provide significant yet intuitive advice on how to minimize the risk of fall and injury. In fact the National Council of safety provides some excellent direction in its recent article “Slip, Trip and Fall Prevention will Keep Older Adults Safe and Independent” ( click here for source). Most of us can leverage a little thought on this topic and easily come up with a checklist of items to evaluate in our homes to make them safer for older adults, those recovering, or disabled. Provided below is a good start and may give you some additional thought and guidance. Please note that naturally, this is offered as a suggestion and not medical advice.

Kitchen Safety

  • Cooking Equipment, Utensils, Dishes, Glasses and Food should be stored appropriately and easy to reach
  • No kind of throw rug or similar placed on a kitchen floor
  • Floors should always be free of any kind of spills (Oils, food, etc)
  • Use counter-top toasters where feasible, making them easily accessible
  • Where higher cabinets must be accessed a step stool with a handrail is should be easily accessible
  • Non-skid floor cleaners only for cleaning the floor

General Concerns with Carpeting

  • Wall-to-Wall carpeting should be completely and properly installed – no loose edges, tears, buckles or holes
  • While not always possible, solid colors are better in that they provide greater consistency for those that are mobility challenged – they also show edges more cleaning
  • Deep Piles and Shag styled carpets should be avoided

Bathroom Concerns and Safety

  • Ensure that bathroom mats are slip-resistant (and not old wherein the slip-resistance has worn) – ensure they are placed near the showering/bathing area
  • Ensure that there are mirrors at various levels to ensure that the client is not struggling or reaching to use a mirror
  • Where possible install grab bars near the toilet, bathtub and/or shower
  • The bathtub/shower floor should be non-skid, if this is not the case then ensure that non-skid safety strips are installed
  • Where feasible use a soap dispenser mounted in a very accessible area in the Shower/Bath
  • Where required, a shower chair is placed in the bathing area
  • The toilet seat should be the raised type or a toilet seat with armrests should be fitted to the toilet to ensure safe balance when sitting or getting up from the toilet

Bedroom Safety

  • Key safety items should be within reach of the bed, for example on the night table. Consider safe lamp, flashlight, phone, cane, etc.
  • If appropriate, a raised height mattress to help with getting into/out of bed
  • The floor, particularly around the bed, should be free of clutter, papers and any other items
  • Nightlights are appropriately placed in the bedroom and along any routes to the bathroom

Outdoors and Around House/Apartment

  • This category naturally only applies in some cases
  • Ensure all walkways are clear of debris, branches, leaves, rocks and similar
  • Ensure all stones and masonry are solid not loose in anyway
  • Ensure all walkways and driveways are as level as possible
  • Ensure that all walkways are clean and not coated with moss, algae, Oil and/or other slippery substances

General Living Space Concerns

  • In areas that could be classified as pathways ensure that low furniture items are moved aside. Examples include coffee tables, folding end tables, ottomans, floor plants, etc
  • Light switches are all in working order and not obstructed
  • No Loose Rugs or throw rugs that can slide
  • Rooms and moving space are clear of furniture obstructions
  • Where applicable use sound activated lamps
  • Where applicable use glow-in-the dark markers on various items that require manipulation, for example cabinet handles, light switches, etc
  • All electrical cords for power, data, phone, etc are properly routed and secured and not anywhere near pathways or living spaces
  • All furniture in proper condition, sturdy and secure
  • Several cordless phones available, each marked with glow in the dark markers, and ensure that they can be located audibly (i.e. have a locate handset feature)
  • No loose tiles or floorboards
  • Night Lights appropriately placed throughout the house
  • Infrared sensor lights in certain areas where brighter light is required at night

Technological Considerations

  • Install carbon monoxide detectors were appropriate
  • Install smoke detectors were appropriate
  • If required, based on level of independence, arrange for medical alert device/subscription
  • Install detectors that also have emergency lights and/or install motion detected lighting where appropriate

Signs of a Concussion

If your child has any signs or symptoms, keep them out of high-level physical activities (including sports) to let their brain reorganize itself – no matter how much they object. Their brain is worth fighting for.Other symptoms and signs of concussions in children are more readily recognizable. Any sign of vomiting, sudden fatigue, or amnesia indicates that the child has had a traumatic head injury and should be taken to the hospital room for an examination.

Even after the signs and symptoms of a concussion fade, the damage itself may not be healed. Using tissue taken posthumously from pro football players, researchers and doctors have been able to view the damage done by concussions. Rather than appearing the same as a normal brain, people who suffered from multiple concussions have large amounts of brown tangles scattered throughout the brain tissue. These brown tangles are similar to the appearance of brain tissue from people with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

At the very least, don’t push your child into sports and potentially head-harming physical activity until a reasonable recuperation period has passed. Take the time to rest your child’s injured head even if they insist they feel better, and learn to recognize the signs and symptoms. The head and the brain are tough, and kids are tougher, but resting their heads now will keep them tough against a more damaging concussion in the future.

Children are always on the move. If adults moved as much as children, we’d likely have just as many head injuries as well. Looking for and knowing the signs and symptoms of concussions in children can prepare you to discern a mild bump from that which warrants ER care, pediatrician follow up, and monitoring for post-concussion syndrome. Make sure you watch your child’s balance and their reaction to light. See if there is an abnormal pause in their reactions, a sudden headache, numbness anywhere in their body, or an unexplainable sudden fatigue.

Headaches may get worse on exertion. In this case, athletes may feel okay on the sideline, but headache symptoms develop once they are on the field. In a mild concussion symptoms can often resolve within 15 minutes. This makes early detection and screening critical in concussion management. It is not uncommon for symptoms such as headache to appear later in the day after a head impact injury.

A concussion is a traumatic injury to the brain caused by a blow to the head. In snowboarding, this can easily happen by a collision with a skier or another snowboarder, a fall to the ground, or an impact with a tree. Signs of a concussion include feeling dizzy or disoriented, having an urge to throw up, or experiencing blurred vision. If you have any of these symptoms after a collision, you should seek immediate medical help.

Sports and games are important activities for students and youths. Unfortunately, many student-athletes sustain concussions as a result of falls, collisions or physical contact during sports such as football, basketball, hockey, gymnastics, field hockey and even cheerleading. A concussion is not just a bump on the head. It is a mild traumatic brain injury that immediately and temporarily disrupts the normal functioning of the brain.

The cognitive problems potentially associated with mild brain injury or concussion include memory problems, poor concentration and attention, irritability, anger and proneness to stress, being self-centered, dependency and lack of insight, poor problem solving and impulsivity. These problems can also include fatigue, lack of initiative and motivation, inappropriate behavior and poor social skills.

One only has to remember the tragic stories of Andre Waters and Mike Webster to recall how severe post concussion symptoms can be. Waters committed suicide due largely to the symptoms he suffered as a result of multiple concussions during his NFL career. Webster, who is in the pro football Hall of Fame, and played on 4 winning Super Bowl teams died homeless. jobless and penniless after living out of his car.

Many people believe that a concussion is a state of unconsciousness. This is not true. Nor is it an injury to the head. A concussion can be a result of injuring the head and it can result in loss of consciousness, but it is more than that. A concussion is the impairment or decrease in mental functions as a result of the brain banging against the skull wall, usually caused by a head injury and sometimes followed with unconsciousness.

Following a Concussion, a wide variety of cognitive (thinking abilities), physical, and psychological symptoms occur, typically in stages. The symptoms may not develop until days or even weeks after the injury. Few patients will experience all of the symptoms, but even one or two can be unpleasant. Some patients find that at first, PCS makes it hard to work, attend classes, get along at home, or reach short-term goals. Most patients with PCS don’t develop symptoms until days or even weeks after the accident, but the syndrome can begin sooner.

Fortunately, there are very few fatalities from concussions, although it is important to have a doctor examine you if it is a serious concussion, or if you still feel uneasy after a few weeks. The standard treatment for concussions is plenty of rest and plenty of monitoring of the injury. To be on the safe side, you should see a doctor.

According to traumatic brain injury books those with recent concussions are more than 3x more likely to commit suicide than a similar person in the general population. Concussions have been linked to clinical depression which eventually leads the person to attempt killing themselves. The highest risk group among those with concussions for suicide is in the 22-59 age group. But the traumatic brain injury in children can be a problem too and shouldn’t be ignored.

Though this is a step in the right direction in regards to traumatic brain injuries, the ruling only applies to game-play situations. As is the case with almost all sports seasons, the majority of a high-school athlete’s time spent playing is not game time, but practice time. In fact, a typical three hour high school football game might be about one fifth of the time each player spent preparing for that game.
