Water Pollution in Eastern United States

Water pollution is a major problem in the United States. All over the world, water pollution is increasingly becoming a major public health concern as statistics shows rising level of pollution in major waterways.  Since sustenance of life on earth depends on water, water pollution is a major threat to life on earth.  As more waterways become polluted, the amount of clean water available for domestic use is decreasing at an alarming rate.  Most source of pollution emanates from human effort to make their lives better, but animal, on land and in ocean, becomes the major culprit of the rising level of water pollution. For example, recent studies have revealed that whales have a higher concentration of carcinogenic chemicals which are endangering their lives.  Water pollution is particularly dangerous because all these chemical pollutants may end up in our bodies, which will come with devastating health consequences.

Lead is one of the common and dangerous water pollutants. Lead pollution is made worse by the fact that it may be difficult to monitor as the sources cannot be easily detected.  It cannot be detected unless complex laboratory testing is carried out, since it cannot be smelt or tasted. In most countries, lead pollution is major problem that is affecting the quality of drinking water.

Drinking water has been identified as a major source of lead pollution, accounting for around 20% of all cases of lead pollution.  Different research studies have revealed that majority of lead pollution occurs through drinking water which implies that water is well known medium for lead pollution. Apart from drinking water, lead pollution can also occur due to accumulation of lead in animals like fish which are later taken as food by humans. However, the plumbing system has been identified as major source of lead pollution.

In Eastern United States, lead pollution is already identified as a major problem in major cities. Water analysis reports shows that there is a high amount of lead in most public water system that is endangering lives of millions of Americans inhabiting these  cities. A number of research studies, especially on school children, have revealed elevated amount of lead in their bodies as a result of drinking lead contaminated water.

Although lead has been detected in public water in different cities in Eastern United States, this paper looks at elevated level of lead in Philadelphia and Washington D.C. Research studies in these two cities reveal that lead is major public health concern as water analysis shows elevated level of lead beyond the recommended levels.

A study that was carried out by Bryant (2004) on lead contamination in drinking water in Philadelphia public schools found out that there are high levels of lead beyond the recommended levels. The study identified that young children, between the ages of 1 to 6 years are at particular risk of lead contamination, and is the main reason why the research decided to focus on public school drinking water.  The researcher collected water from 292 public schools, and later analyzed it for lead levels.  The study found out that 124 schools (42.5%) had lead levels which did not exceed 20 ppb, the recommend amount by EPA. A total of 28.7% of school buildings showed lead levels between 20pb to 50 ppb while 11.6% had lead levels between 50-100 ppb. 17.1% of the schools had lead levels exceeding 100 ppb (Bryant, 2004).

This study showed that lead pollution was a major problem for most public schools in Philadelphia. The study concluded that 57.4% of the school buildings had water lead levels which exceeded the 20ppb threshold which is usually recommended by Environment Protection Agency (EPA). Lead pollution occurs as the level of lead accumulated in the body increases. This means that depending on the amount of water that could be drunk by a student there was risk of increased exposure to lead pollution even during their formative years.  This study serves as a wake up call for authorities in Philadelphia to act and reduce the level of lead contamination.

The same cares is replicated in Washington DC. For a long time now, Washington D.C has been grappling with the problem of lead pollution in public drinking water system. Water analysis result has shown elevated levels of lead in public drinking water but as Duggan (2008) points out, there has been little will to change the lead infested water carrying pipes in Washington. D.C Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) has for long pointed out that the city is suffering from the problem of lead contamination in water deliver pipes but little progress has been achieved. Since 2004, WASA has been working top replace pipes in more than 35,000 homes in D.C to reduce the risk of lead pollution (Duggan, 2008).  To mitigate the situation before fully replacement of the pipes, WASA has introduced orthophosphate chemical treatment of water but this is just a short term solution that may not solve the major problem of water lead pollution.

WASA analysis had shown that before the chemical treatment method was introduced, more than 90% of homes had water with lead levels exceeding the EPA set limit (Duggan, 2008). This posed a great public health danger to most people in the city. After the chemical treatment was introduced, the water level reduced significantly to or less than the set EPA limit of 15 ppb.  However, there is still a major problem of lead pollution in D.C as other studies, especially on young elementary pupils, reveal rising level of lead in the body which can be attributed to lead pollution.

From the above two articles, it is evident that lead pollution remains major problem in public health despite the efforts that have been taken to deal mitigate the problem. Lead pollution in water comes from different courses. Lead in drinking water enters mainly from corrosion and wearing away of water pipes which contain lead, or mixing water with materials containing lead. Most materials that contaminate water include lead based solder which is used to weld copper pipes together, brass and chrome brass faucets, and even from pipes which are made using lead.

Lead has numerous health effects.  It can lead to health impairment and diseases occur due to long term exposure to lead.  The severity and frequency of health effects occurs with the increase in lead concentration in the blood. In the short term, lead poisoning can lead to loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, insomnia, fatigue, headache, anemia, and others. However, long term exposure may lead to disease condition and damage in blood formation, nervous, urinary, and reproductive systems.

Lead poisoning poses a great risk to all people in the society. However, children appear to be at more risk owing to the effect of lead during development years.  As has been reviewed in the above study by Bryant (2004) children are at an increased risk especially in the formative development years as lead can impair with nervous and reproductive system. Therefore, authorities need to do all they can to reduce lead pollution in water.

Top 5 Ways For Men To Keep Your Relationship Hot This Winter

I recall being an inexperienced, 21-year-old single man-boy and watching men who were married with children, complaining of being exhausted and too tired for sex. I vowed upon my stack of priceless (in terms of memories and joy) comic book cards that the day I complained of being too tired to cast my wife in my own porno epic was the day that I would cook dinner 2 nights IN A ROW. When that day came (and * I * was too tired to do the same), I found myself filled with a sense of defeat which was a way to a fleeting vision of a possible future where one "too tired to bust a nut" night turned Into many and I was pleasuring myself to mental pictures of my wife's booty while she slept soundly. Of course she was thrilled at the vision of TWO hot meals in a row waiting for her. I was finally able to sympathize with the hard-working man who came home from a days' work and wanted to relieve some tension and I found myself shaking my head at my 21-year-old self, wishing that I could tell him what the Future was like, and warn him about that one girl …

Some couples do not get around to having sex as often as they would like for many reasons: one partner may have a different work schedule than the other, creating a situation in which one partner is chumping at the bit where the other is wrung dry Like a wash-rag; One partner may have a higher sex drive than the other one. No matter what the reason, sometimes it sucks and not in the good way. To make matters even worse, in the colder climates, our spirits tend to stay high as long as the sun is in the sky, which is not long.

Here are five ways for your partner and yourself to work around being tired and create new plateaus of pleasure anytime, no matter what your energy levels are:

1. Wash your bum: the meaning of this statement may elude many of you reading this (some of the men reading this, myself included), so I'll give specific directions to gain the maximum level of effectiveness: Imagine yourself as your partner . You've had a long day, your feet are on fire and your back hurts. Your partner wants to "blow off" some steam and their "pleasure pit" smells like sautéed episodes wrapped up in a 70-year-old baseball mitt. Of course, you're totally NOT turned on.

What I'm trying to say DIRECTLY TO YOU is that you want to make it as easy as possible for your partner to get turned on. Follow the 1st commandment of tired sex: wash thine bum so you mayest (possibly) receive some sweet lovin '.

2. Help your partner relax: while sexual desire is major component in the process of experiencing mind-blowing sex, it's not always enough to turn your partner on. Because we are all different animals physically and spiritually, we all have different triggers that need to be folded before we can go Beast Mode on our partners' (insert place here …).

Your partner may need to be relaxed before they can tap into their inner panther. Rub their feet. Give them a back massage. Pour them some wine. Get their feedback on what gives them pleasure and then proceed with reckless abandon.
As a add-on to this tip, and this may have suddenly come to my attention because my wife may or may not be standing behind me as I type this: Have the house somewhere decent looking when your partner comes home so that they do not ' T have to expend what little sexual power they have cleaning up a mess that you and your 1-year-old son may or may not have created.

3. Allow your partner to unload verbally and emotionally – While most men tend to retire to their man-caves to recharge their batteries (like myself), women are hard-wired to express their feelings and observations about the world-at-large verbally. Literally. Research has brought to light the fact that women speak about 10,000 words A DAY more than we men. They are HARD-WIRED to express themselves verbally and as such, sometimes it's a good policy to just sit back and LISTEN. We as men have all the answers and sometimes your partner does not want the answer; They just want to spew their frustrations and anger unto you.

After a good unloading session, you'll notice that your partner is more relaxed and spirited. Now is the time to make your move! Do not always take the first "no" as the final answer – this is classic "her minds telling me no, but her bodies telling me" yes, more !! "The first" no "may simply be an automatic reaction based On how she's feeling at the moment.

4. Another thing to consider is the fact that sometimes our ladies turned on by our assertiveness; They just want us to take charge and "do the damn thing". That's one of the cool things about being a man: we are naturally hard-wired to access what I call the "Primal Male archetype", the man who is all yang and very little-to-no yin.

Thankfully, our women are hardwired to respond positively most of the time. Tap into your Primal Male archetype the next time your lady says "no" (after you've applied at least steps 1,2 and 3). If at first you do not succeed, try, try again, and watch the magic happen.

5. Be okay with NOT having sex – Even the DC universe comic book super-villain / anti-hero DeadShot missed once. There are going to be those times where it's just not going to happen. The trick is to take pleasure in the fact that when "it" does happen, it's going to be mind-blowing; Let the anticipation of pleasure carry you blissfully through the next few days.

Armed with this knowledge, use it wisely and make that bedroom that you've been too tired to clean up for the last month even messier with some red-hot lovin '.

How Yellow Toenail Fungus Can Affect Your Life

Yellow toenails are not uncommon.  They can be caused from smoking, or conditions such as diabetes and chronic leg swelling.  More often than not, however, they are caused by yellow toenail fungus.  This can be very unsightly and lead to other symptoms such as thick, raised, or otherwise deformed toenails.  Though not often discussed openly, this is a condition that is suffered by many people, especially athletes.  Treatment type and length depends on the stage at which the fungus is caught.  If caught early, it may be gotten rid of somewhat easily. However, by the time the yellow color appears, the fungus has typically been around for a while and will take much longer to get rid of.

Yellow toenail fungus can cause all kinds of problems other than the obvious health related ones.  Self-esteem can plummet with the occurrence of toenail fungus.  Nails that are unsightly can cause someone to not want to show their feet.  This makes open toed shoes and the beach quite difficult.  Also, deformed, thick, raised nails catch on things more easily, increasing the risk of falling.  These are all very good reasons to know the early signs and try to eradicate the problem as early as possible.

The early signs of yellow toenail fungus are very subtle.  It usually starts with a small spot under the nail.  If caught at this point, treatment can be as simple as a home remedy.  These can actually be quite effective at killing the fungus if caught in the early stages.  However, if the nail has already turned yellow, more invasive action may be necessary. An over the counter anti-fungal medication may work, but by this time the fungus has embedded deep into the nail bed.  It is important to remember that it may take a very long time to get rid of it, and consistency in applying the medication will be necessary if success is to be had.

It is wise to visit a doctor to make sure that there are not underlying issues.  Also, a doctor can determine the exact type of fungus and may be able to provide a more effective method to get rid of nail fungus.  Keeping the rest of the body healthy and the toenails clean are also very important to regaining a healthy nail.  This includes properly trimming nails, as well as maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regime.

Help! I Have Chronic Halitosis!

What is chronic halitosis?

The most common cause of chronic halitosis (chronic bad

breath) is an oral condition such as bacterial build up in

the mouth, a cavity, or abscess. Another possible cause is

bacteria that produce volatile sulfur compounds on the

tongue which can occur either because your body produces

too much naturally, or from a high protein diet. Another

common cause of chronic halitosis is dry mouth. All the

conditions mentioned above are breeding grounds for the

bacteria that cause bad breath. But there are cures for

chronic bad breath which we’ll get into later.

To start, since you may be immune to the smell of your

breath, the easiest way to determine if you have chronic

halitosis is to ask someone you trust, like a spouse,

parent or sibling.

Causes of chronic halitosis

If your suspicions of halitosis are confirmed there are

some easy and effective cures for chronic bad breath, but

first you must know what is causing it. Some common causes

o Odorous foods, foods high in protein and even coffee can

cause chronic halitosis.

o Cavities, decay, abscesses and gum disease can also

create bad breath.

o Tobacco use

o Alcohol and alcohol-based mouth washes

o Allergies, sinus problems and the common cold

o Infrequent or incorrect brushing and flossing

o Body over producing bacteria is another cause of chronic

o Certain medications or diseases

o Dry mouth

Cures for Chronic Bad Breath

So, what are some cures for chronic bad breath. The good

news is there are many.

o If you are due, schedule an appointment with your dentist

for a check-up and cleaning. Make him aware of the problem,

so he can check your oral health.

o Brush and floss after every meal.

o Drink plenty of water to keep your mouth moist. A few

times per day, while drinking water, squish it around your

mouth and in between your teeth to break up any food that

may be hiding.

o Add baking soda to your toothpaste to help kill odors in

your mouth.

o Stay away from alcohol-based mouth washes and sprays.

Instead make a wash using a couple drops of tea tree oil

and water.

o Trade in your breath mints for parley, cloves or thyme.

o Avoid diets high in fat or high in protein

o If you’re a dairy addict, cut back and see if this helps

your chronic halitosis.

Brush that Bad Right Out of Your Breath

Sounds simple, but a very easy way to get rid of chronic

halitosis is to brush and floss directly after every meal.

Now, this does not mean that people who suffer from chronic

halitosis don’t brush their teeth or have poor hygiene; it

simply means you may have to do so more frequently.

Flossing regularly will also help cure chronic bad breath

as it will loosen and eliminate any food lodged between

your teeth.

Can bad breath be treated?

Yes, but first you must identify the cause and then

implement the proper solution. If you’ve tried the cures

for chronic bad breath mentioned and you still suffer from

chronic halitosis, make an appointment with your dentist.

Your dentist will be able to pinpoint the cause of the

chronic halitosis just by the odor it gives off. He’ll know

whether it is dental, bacterial, a throat infection or

other causes.

Cancers From B to T – Most common Types of Cancer – – Bowel (Colorectal ) Cancer

Bowel cancer
Bowel cancer also known as colorectal cancer, is defined as a condition of the abnormal proliferation of cells in the colon, rectum, or vermiform appendix. Bowl is divided in 2 parts, the first part of the bowel, the small bowl, is involved with the digestion and absorption of food. The 2nd part, the large bowel which consist the the colon and rectum, is involved in absorption of water from the small bowel contents and broken down of certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them to be re absorbed and reused by the body. Bowel cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progress cancer and in predictable way.
Bowel cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in developed countries, including US and Canada.

Types of bowel cancer
1. Adenocarcinomas

Most bowel cancers are adenocarcinomas, originated in epithelium tissues, including the surface layer of skin, glands and their tissues that line the cavities and organs of the body.

2. Squamous cell cancers
Squamous cells are the skin like cells that make up the bowel lining together with the gland cells. Squamous cell cancers are rare with the risk of 25 per 100000.

Other bowel tumours
3. Carcinoid
Carcinoid is an unusual type of slow growth neuroendocrine tumor. It looks benign but might spread to other parts of the body as they grow in hormone producing tissue in the digestive system.

4. Leiomyosarcomas
Leiomyosarcomas are the rare and resistant types of bowel cancer and generally not very responsive to chemotherapy or radiation. They are malignant abnormal mass of tissue of smooth muscles of colon, comprising between 5–10% of soft tissue sarcomas.

5. Lymphomas
Bowel lymphomas are rare and more likely to start in the rectum rather in the colon. Many patients with lymphomas are diagnosed in the late stage and already spread to other organs.

6. Melanomas
Melanomas are rare malignant tumor of cells that produce the dark pigment. This type of bowel cancer usually originates from somewhere else and then spread to the bowel.

7. Etc.

1. Changes in bowel habits
2. Narrow stools
3. Constipation
4. Diarrhea
5. Irritable bowel syndrome
6. Intermittent
7. Ulcerative colitis
8. Crohn’s disease,
9. Diverticulosis
10. Peptic ulcer disease
11. Abdominal pain
12. Unintentional weight loss
13. Loss of appetite
14. Unexplained fatigue
15. Nausea or vomiting
16. Anemia
17. Jaundice
18. Etc.

Causes and Risk factors
1. Age
The disease is more common in people over the age of 50 and increase with age. Regular colonoscopy after age of 50 is valuable to detect the disease in the early stage and decrease the risk of development of bowel cancer.

2. Bowl inflammatory diseases
Prolonged period of inflammatory diseases of the colon, such as Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease, can increase your risk of colon cancer due to long term inflammation of the lining of the colon.

3. Family History of Bowel Cancer
If a patient’s parents, siblings, children who has had colorectal cancer are more likely to develop bowel cancer.

4. Inherited Syndromes
Genetic syndromes passed through generations can increase the risk of developing colon cancer.
a. Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP):
Familial adenomatous polyposisis an inherited condition in which numbers of benign polyp form mainly in the lining of the large intestine, but they can become malignant due to the mutations in the APC gene that a patient inherits from the parents.
b. Hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer (HNPCC)
HNPCC is also known as Lynch syndrome. It can increase the risk of developing bowel cancer than the general population due to mutation of genes in repairing DNA damage.
c. Turcot syndrome
Turcot syndrome is also a rare inherited condition in which cells become abnormal and form multiple adenomatous colon polyps anf eventually turn malignant.
d. Peutz-Jeghers syndrome
Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is an autosomal dominant genetic disease with condition of the development of benign hamartomatous polyps in the gastrointestinal tract and hyperpigmented macules on the lips and oral mucosa due to mutations in the gene STK1.
e. MUTYH-associated polyposis
MUTYH is a human gene encoding a DNA glycosylase. Mutations in the gene MUTYH increases the risk of develop colon polyps which eventually become cancerous if the colon is not removed.

5. Race and ethic background
a, African Americans have the highest risk of bowel cancer with unknown reasons (E. Mitchell, et al., 2009)
b. Ashkenazi Jews have a highest risk of development of bowel cancer due to several genes mutation (I. Shapira et al., 2002; DS. Weinberg et al., 2006)

6. Personal history of other cancer
Research shows that the risk of developing bowel cancer is increased for women with history of other cancer such as ovarian, uterine, endometrial or breast cancer.

7. Diet
Diet with high in animal and trans fat and less in fiber, vegetables and fruits is associated with high risk if bowel cancer. Cooking meats at very high temperatures such as frying, broiling or grilling create chemicals that increases the risk of bowel and other cancer.

8. Physical Inactivity
Researchers in Utah and northern California at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program between 1997 and 2002 found that vigorous or moderated physical activity reduced the risk of bowel cancer in both men and women.

9. Diabetes
Abnormal glucose metabolism increases the risk of bowel cancer. Research from Cancer Research UK and the Medical Research Council studied 9600 participants. at the American Association for Cancer Research’s Sixth Annual International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research found that women with diabetes are 1.5 times more likely to develop bowel cancer than women who don’t have the metabolic disorder.

10. Obesity
The George Institute for International Health in Sydney, Australia report showed that obese individuals (Body Mass Index* (BMI) >30 kg/m2) have a 20% greater risk of developing colorectal cancer compared with those of normal weight (BMI < 25 kg/m2) and people who are obese have an increased risk of bowel cancer and an increased risk of dying of bowel cancer when compared with people considered normal weight.

11. Smoking
Long-term cigarette smoking increases a person’s risk of developing bowel cancer due to the effect of carcinogens and development of polyps which can become malignant.

12. Alcohol
A study by Dr. Morten Gronbaek of the National Institute of Public Health in Copenhagen, has found that heavy drinkers (especially non-wine drinkers) significantly increase their risk of contracting rectal cancer. The findings are based on a population study of over 29,000 Danish men and women aged between 23 and 95.

13. Acromegaly
Acromegaly is an endocrine disorder characterized by sustained hypersecretion of growth hormone (GH) with concomitant elevation of insulin-like growth factor (IGF) may increase your risk of colon polyps and bowel cancer.

14. Nigh shift work
Study that exposures to light at night suppresses the production of melatonin, a hormone that has antiproliferative effects on intestinal cancers. The result also suggested that working a rotating night shift at least three nights per month for 15 or more years may increase the risk of bowel cancer in women.

15. Previous Radiation Therapy for Certain Cancers
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, colon cancer has been caused by doses of about 1,000 millisieverts (mSv).

16. Gender
According to Heinz-Josef Lenz, M.D., professor of medicine at USC’s Keck School of Medicine There has been increasing evidence that gender plays a significant role in the development and progression of bowel cancer are higher among men due to protective effect of female hormones.

17. Etc.

Diagnosis and tests
Since bowel cancer is considered as one of most slow growth cancer and most of the discoveries are in the late stage and older than 50 years of age, implement bowel cancer screening methods can detect the cancer in its early stage resulting in a 29 percent drop in cancer deaths in 20 years.
1. Digital rectal exam
It is an internal examination of the rectum. The exam taken about a few minutes by first examining the external area (anus and perinium) for any abnormalities such as hemorrhoids, lumps, etc. Then, as the patient strains down, the physician gently puts a lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum through the anus and palpates the insides to check for large lumps for approximately sixty seconds.

2. Fecal occult blood test (FOBT)
It is the test to check for invisible blood in the stool. you are asked to eat red meats for a week to look for globin, DNA, or other blood factors including transferrin with the purpose is to detect subtle blood loss in the gastrointestinal tract.

3. Endoscopy
An endoscope is an instrument used by your doctor to pass through a natural opening of the body or by a small incision. Depending to the circumstance, you doctor may refer either the rectum Sigmoidoscopy or whole colon Colonoscopy.
a. Sigmoidoscopy
Sigmoidoscopy is a test to exam the large intestine from the rectum through the last part of the colon by either using a flexible endoscope (flexible sigmoidoscopy) or a rigid device (rigid sigmoidoscopy) to look for benign and malignant polyps, early signs of cancer in the descending colon and rectum, as well as any intestinal bleeding, inflammation, abnormal growths, etc.
b. Colonoscopy
Colonoscopy is a whole bowel examination to detect inflamed tissue, ulcers, and abnormal growths, benign and malignant polyps, early signs of cancer.

4. Double contrast barium enema (DCBE)
DCBE is a x-rays of the colon and rectum after injecting a liquid containing barium into the rectum to screen for bowel cancer and abnormalities. If there is any suspicious, your doctor may order a screening test such as a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy that we mentioned above.

5. Barium Enema
The exam, most of the time performs in the out patient in hospital and in the doctor office, you will be asked to move into different positions to get different views. Barium enema is the use of barium to highlight your large intestine and delivers air into the colon to expand it for better image as x-ray is taken.

6. CT Colonography scan and/or liver scan
a. CT colonography scan
With the same purpose, CT colonography scan is to screen for polyps or cancers in the large intestine by taking the cross-sectional images of bowel then be examined on a computer monitor, printed or transferred to a CD.
b. Liver scan
Liver scan is the test to gather information about liver and spleen function or used to help confirm that the tumor has spread with injecting a radioactive material called a radioisotope into one of your veins. After the liver has soaked up the material, under the scanner images are displaying on a computer.

7. Caricinoeembroyic antigen (CEA)
Caricinoeembroyic antigen (CEA) is a type of protein molecule found in many different cells of the body. CEA measurement is mainly used as a tumor marker to detect any recurrences after surgical resection, or localize cancer spread though dosage of biological fluids.

8. Etc.

Treatments are depended totally in the stage and grade of the cancer of each patient. If the cancer is only limited to the mucosa such as a single layer of epithelial cells, a layer of connective tissue, and a thin muscle layer, than it can be cured in most cases. If the cancer have spread through the muscular layer of the bowel or the lymph note, the curable rate is lower. If the cancer has spread to other organs, the curable rate are even lower. Grade of the cancer is calculated dependently to how aggressive the cancer is.
1. Surgery and colostomy
a. Surgery
Types of surgery is depending to the stage, grade and position of the tumor needed to remove, and surgery with complete removal of the cancer offers the best chance to cure the disease.
b. colostomies
A colostomy is surgery to prevent the leakage of bowel content by diverting them away from the weaken part of bowel to prevent damage and infection after surgery to allow them to heal properly because of damage of bowel due to tumor removals to provide an alternative channel for feces to leave the body. After the weaken parts of bowel is recovered, further surgery is required to reconnect the bowel and close the colostomy.
Unfortunately, if the tumor is very close to the anus, bowel can not reconnected safely or in the late stage of the cancer, a permanent colostomy is required and small bowel is diverted to the surface.
2. Radiotherapy
2.1. Radiotherapy is the medical use of ionizing radiation to treat cancer by destroying the cancer cells but doing as little harm as possible to normal cells, if cancer happens to the place where surgery is impossible. In fact, radiotherapy has a minimum effect in treating bowel cancer.
2.2. Side effects
a. Diarrhea
b. Tiredness,
c. Frequent urinary
d. Sore skin in the treatment area
5. Etc.

3. Chemotherapy
3.1. Chemotherapy, in bowel cancer used to stop the spreading of the cancer cells and is most helpful treatment for bowel cancer with moderate advance such as bowel cancer has only spread to bowel wall or to the lymph note with combination of some medications, such as 5-fluorouracil, leucovorin, and oxaliplatin (FOLFOX) with bevacizumab or 5-fluorouracil, leucovorin, and irinotecan (FOLFIRI) with bevacizumab, etc.
3.2 Side effects
a. Nausea
b. Hair loss
c. Sore mouth
d. Diarrhoea
e. Sore eyes
f. Etc.

4. Biological therapy
4.1. Biological therapies are new type of treatments in active research by using substances that occur naturally in the body, such as Cetuximab and bevacizumab are used to treat colon or rectal cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
4.2. Side effects
a. Tiredness
b. Diarrhea
c. Skin changes
d. A sore mouth, weakness
e. Loss of appetite
f. Low blood counts
g. Swelling of parts of the body due to a build up of fluid

How Compression Sleeves Help Baseball Players

A wide range of people enjoy playing baseball every year, from children in school or local leagues up to adults who play professionally in national leagues and competitions. Although the game does not include the harsh physical contact of some other sports, it does place specific types of stress on different parts of the body. One way to lower the risk of injury or prevent several types of issues while playing is to wear compression sleeves or stockings. These apply pressure to the arms or the legs. Wearing the sleeves will help in a number of ways.

Compression sleeves provide consistent support for the muscles and joints during a game. The small amount of pressure is enough to keep the muscles aligned and the joints working properly. Batting has the potential to cause vibrations throughout the arms after hitting a ball. These vibrations could force the muscles out of alignment by a small amount. This can result in injuries over time. The sleeve holds the muscles in place. Similarly, the pressure provides support for the joints in the elbow that sometimes twist into an awkward position when chasing a ball or when overextending as part of a swing.

Reduce Fatigue

A pitcher sometimes spends the entire game on the mound attempting to strike out the batter or protect the bases. The constant motion involved in pitching can cause fatigue, especially during a long and active game. This fatigue can cause pain that only grows worse as the innings progress. Compression sleeves work to reduce fatigue in the arms and even the legs for runners. The garments provide extra oxygen to critical areas that lower the amount of acid produced by the body. The reduced amount of acid lessens the pain. Pitchers who wear compression garments have an easier time throwing for an entire game without losing speed or power.

Improve Recovery

Many baseball players have a hard time recovering after a game. Swelling in the arms and legs is painful and might last for days. Compression sleeves and compression stockings help to improve recovery times. They prevent the development of some issues that trigger pain. The garments also improve circulation. This allows more blood to reach the muscle groups in each arm where circulation is sometimes the weakest. Improved circulation means more oxygen reaches the area. Oxygen promotes faster healing while also reducing swelling. Players who consistently use these sleeves could see shorter and less painful recovery times. It even helps to wear the sleeves between games while relaxing at home.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Ovarian Cysts and Pelvic Masses

The ovaries are organs of the female reproductive system producing the female hormones (estrogen and progesterone) necessary for a woman’s menstrual cycle, pregnancy and overall health. Ovaries release an egg every month during a woman’s reproductive years and before the egg is released it forms a small sac called a follicle – if the follicle doesn’t break to release the fluid inside of it, a follicular ovarian cyst may develop. If there is bleeding inside the follicle, it may result in a hemorrhagic ovarian cyst.

Ovarian tumors are cysts that are not part of the menstrual cycle and they can be either solid or filled with fluid, or both. This type of tumors usually require surgical removal. Some of the most common ovarian cysts and tumors are: Endometrioma (filled with thick endometriotic fluid), Fibroma (solid ovarian tumor resembling a fibroid), Dermoid Tumor (with cystic + solid components), Mucinous Cystadenoma (contains mucous material), Serous Cystadenoma (with yellow fluid).

PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) is a condition usually present because of hormonal imbalance and it causes development of small, benign cysts on the ovaries, leading to an irregular menstrual cycle and elevated levels of male hormone.

A pelvic mass is a general term referring to any growth or tumor on the ovary or in the pelvis and it can be cystic (cystadenoma), solid (fibroma), or both (dermoid). It can also be benign or malignant.

Ovarian cysts are usually harmless and do not produce symptoms. If they get larger, if they twist or burst, they may cause problems and that is when immediate treatment is needed. Common symptoms in these case are abnormal bleeding, ache in lower back or thighs, pelvic pain with intercourse, heaviness in abdomen and nausea or vomiting, pressure on bowel and difficulty emptying the bladder completely etc.

Ovarian cysts are examined via ultrasound to determine the shape, size and composition and establish the correct diagnosis and management of the condition. While fluid-filled cysts are less likely to be cancerous and usually require observation only, cysts that are solid or mixed may need to be further examined to determine if cancer is present and most often require surgical treatment. MRIs are usually performed for solid tumors while blood tests are reserved for pregnancy tests and to determine hormone levels.

Hacksaw, Handles & Blades – No, You Don’t Know How to Use One

Hacksaws are one of the most common hand tools. Nearly everyone owns one, and if you don’t have one, you need to buy one. Hacksaws are inexpensive and very economical to use. But most of you never use it because the one time you tried to use it things didn’t go well. You broke the hacksaw blade, the blade kept falling out of the handle, or it kept getting stuck in the piece you were trying to cut. If you did manage to get the piece cut, it took forever and the cut ended up crooked.

The main reasons most people have difficulty when sawing metal with a hacksaw are:

You have the blade in wrong

You aren’t using a sharp blade

There is too much flex in the blade

The number of teeth is to low for the project

You are putting too much pressure on the saw

You don’t clamp the work.

I will cover each of these difficulties as you and I go through this article.

Hacksaws and hacksaw blades are designed to cut metal (I will tell you how to use it to cut wood and plastic) and most people find cutting metal very difficult and frustrating. The reason, most of the time, is that they don’t really know how to use the metal hacksaw.

What is a Hacksaw?

A hacksaw is a metal frame designed to hold a tempered metal blade. The blade is typically 1/2 inch high and the majority of them are 12 inches long. The blade has a hole on each end that fits into pins on the hacksaw. Hacksaws are designed to cut on the push stroke. The handle (grip) on a properly designed saw is angled just right so you put a little pressure on the blade when you push it through the material you are cutting. Even though some so-called “experts” will tell you that you can put the blade in the other way a hacksaw does not work well if you have the blade in backwards.

Do you need a Hacksaw?

You can cut almost anything with a hacksaw. Although it was designed to cut metal, you can use it to cut plastic, wood, metal tubing, aluminum, copper, and brass. It works very well to cut electrical tubing (conduit), BMX (flexible metal tubing), plastic water pipe, (PVT & CVT) and even nuts and bolts. You can use it to cut a 2X4 in a pinch and with the right blade porcelain tile.

Setting up the Hacksaw to Cut.

Step 1. Determine which blade you will use to cut the material. Use a 32 t.p.i. blade for conduit, an 18 tooth blade for cutting off a bolt or plastic pipe and an 8 tooth for wood. In practice you want at least three teeth in contact with the material at any time. If you are cutting deeper than the depth of the blade use a blade that has wavy teeth. The wavy blade leaves a wider slot (kerf) that keeps the blade from sticking in the groove you are cutting.

You can use it to cut wood. It will cut a lot slower than a wood saw, but it works if you don’t have anything else. Use a 8 or 10 tooth blade and mark the cut line on the board both horizontally and vertically. Use the horizontal mark to make you initial cut (groove) and the vertical mark to keep your cut straight. Take your time and don’t put a lot of pressure on the hacksaw.

Step 2. Insert the blade so that the teeth are pointing forward. If you can’t see this, rub your finger gently over the teeth of the blade.

You will feel the teeth “grip” your finger. Put the blade so it grips when you push the saw. The holes of the blade go into the pins on the bottom of the frame. Many hacksaws are designed to take different length blades so if you have an adjustable frame you may have to shorten or lengthen the frame to fit your blade.

The teeth should try to “grab” your finger when pushed. If they don’t feel sharp, the blade is dull and should be replaced. Blades are inexpensive so don’t be afraid to replace it.

Step 3. Tighten the thumbscrew until you can’t turn it with your hand (Hand tight) This amount of tension on the blade should keep the blade from bowing as you cut. Sometimes when I am have problems with the blade falling off, I will tighten it another 1/4 turn with a pliers.

Ok, Let’s Cut Something.

I am going to use a metal pipe for this example. It is easy to cut and once you get a little experience using the hacksaw, cutting metal will be a breeze.

To really use a hacksaw well you need to clamp your work. I have a vise on a workbench that I usually use.

If you don’t have a vise, screw a 2X4 onto your bench and hold the pipe against the 2X4 with your left hand. When possible use a vise or clamp to secure the metal you want to cut.

Step 1. To use a hacksaw properly, grip the frame with both hands. (I am right handed so I grab the handle with my right hand and use my left hand to hold the other end of the saw.) Hold the hacksaw so that your right hand index finger is pointing ahead to help guide the saw. As you push the blade (forward stroke) use your left hand to guide the saw so that it cuts straight. DO NOT use your left hand to apply pressure, just use it to guide your cut. Use most of the blade. If you apply pressure on the forward stroke with your left hand the teeth will usually grab too much and the saw will “stick”. Again a hacksaw handle is angled to give you the proper down pressure on the blade.

Step 2. When you get to the end of the forward stroke, stop and pull the saw back with your right hand. As you pull back don’t apply any pressure with your right hand. (It only cuts in the forward direction and putting pressure on the return stroke will just wear out the blade prematurely). A lot of teachers will make you lift the saw on the return stroke so you don’t destroy the blade. Move your body forward and back as you cut, pressing on the forward stroke and easing off on the return one.

Step 3. Repeat this until you saw all the way through the pipe. With a little practice you will be able to cut at about 1 stroke every second. Don’t stroke any faster than this because it will create too much heat and again wear out the blade prematurely.

Don’t put too much pressure on the blade. You may have to break a blade or two before you get the feel of how much pressure you can apply. Don’t worry, they are cheap. Don’t saw too quickly as that can cause the blade to break as well. Always check to make sure that the blade is secured tightly in its frame.

Reviews. Or Don’t buy one at Wally World

Believe it or not, I could tell you a lot more about using a hacksaw, but this is enough to get you cutting properly. Buy a good quality hacksaw I recommend on my website. Even the cheap one I recommend is good quality and will last you years. With a quality saw it won’t take long before you get good at using one.

DON’T buy a cheap one at the local dollar store. Why? The hacksaw handle has to be strong enough to keep the blade tensioned correctly and the cheap ones will give you nothing but years of frustration. Also buy a hacksaw with the handle tilted like the Stanley 150565. Some hacksaws have a straight handle and are very hard to use for a beginner.

Blades are cheap, so buy a box of them in at least two “teeth” numbers (32 teeth for metal conduit and 18 teeth for solid steel, plastic pipe and general use. But don’t buy cheap blades. The cheap blades are too brittle and you will end up breaking a lot of them. A good hacksaw blade cuts on it’s own with very little pressure from you so change the blades as soon as they get dull. To tell if a blade is dull pull your finger over the blade. If it is still sharp the teeth will try to “catch” on your finger. A dull blade won’t. I prefer Milwaukee blades because they will flex without breaking, and last a long, long time compared to the cheap blades. Better yet, buy two inexpensive hacksaws and keep different blades on each. Dull, worn blades take a lot of work to cut an item, so change them as often as you would a utility knife or razor blade.

Visitation Dreams – Dreaming of the Deceased

Many of us have lost loved ones, unexpectedly as I did with my brother, or after an illness as was the case with my father. Sooner or later, we will all experience the grief and trauma of the death of a significant person in our lives.

Virtually every folk tradition and religion tells us that we, our souls, survive after death, and most assure us that those who have passed on can communicate with us through our dreams.

People of all ages, cultures, backgrounds and beliefs have reported that they have communicated with a deceased loved one while they were sound asleep. They’re convinced that the experience wasn’t “just a dream,” and that the dream character wasn’t a dream character at all, but their deceased loved one. These types of dreams are commonly referred to as visitation dreams.

Psychologists and dream researchers love to catalogue and categorize data, and while many tend to categorize and sub-categorize these types of dreams in various (and different) ways, I prefer to stick with a simple, general definition, for reasons I’ll explain momentarily. I define a visitation dream as: a dream experience where the dreamer feels that the deceased person was actually present in the dream. This feeling can occur during the dream, and/or upon awakening.

To give you an idea of the different categories developed by different researchers, I’ll give you a brief sampling.

Deirdre Barrett lists four types of these dreams:

  • Describe the state of death
  • Deliver messages to the living
  • Seek to change the circumstances of their death
  • Give loved ones a chance to say goodbye

Patricia Garfield, in a piece that appeared in the anthology Trauma and Dreams, lists 11 types of visitation dreams:

  • The survivor may or may not realize the person is actually dead.
  • The deceased suffers the symptoms that caused their death.
  • The dead bids farewell to the dreamer.
  • The deceased travels in some sort of vehicle.
  • The survivor receives a phone call.
  • The deceased appears young and healthy.
  • The deceased either criticizes or approves of the dreamer.
  • The dead offers advice and/or comforts the dreamer.
  • The deceased returns for a romantic or sexual encounter.
  • The dead seems to encourage the dreamer to join them in death.
  • The deceased is going about daily routines or may just be present.

T.J. Wray and Ann Back Price, in their book Grief Dreams: How They Help Us After the Death of a Loved One (2005), opt to go with four types:

  • Visitation Dreams
  • Message Dreams
  • Reassurance Dreams
  • Trauma Dreams

I could continue, but I’m sure you get the idea. There is no universal categorization, nor is there even a generally agreed upon number of themes or types. Robert Moss offers thirteen different visitation themes, and others up to twenty.

No matter how many, or how few, ways you categorize visitation dreams, they all have one element in common… the delivery of a message. The message may be in the form of guidance, knowledge or a warning and are as diverse and personal as the dreamer and the deceased themselves.

Simply dreaming of a deceased person isn’t necessarily a spirit communication. There is a difference between a grief dream and a visitation dream, and here in lies the confusion. Many of us dream of our deceased loved ones shortly after their death. These dreams help us work through our grief, guilt, pain and loss. Because such dreams are so emotional, they get confused with visitation dreams. In grief dreams your dearly departed may show up for dinner or to join you in a round of golf, or do what any other dream character might do. They generally don’t have a specific message or speak to you directly. These types of dreams are often nightmarish, upsetting or “not real,” as opposed to visitation dreams which are often described as feeling “so real and vivid.”

Some clues to help you determine if your dream is a visitation dream are:

1. The dream feels more real than an ordinary dream: you experience more clarity, focus, and steadiness of mind. The colours seem more vivid, your senses are heightened.

2. There’s a feel or sense that the person is really them, not just a memory or stand in for someone or something else. “That was Aunt Penny – I know it was her.”

3. The dream plot is very thin (not much of a storyline or plot). Usually the dream narrative consists of the interaction between you and the deceased person.

4. Strong emotions are commonly reported: love, forgiveness, anger, fear. However, many dreamers have reported a surprising lack of emotion in these types of dreams, which is what made them so memorable and “different.”

5. There’s “physical” contact between the spirit and the dreamer, usually a hug or a reaching out.

6. The deceased person often looks younger and healthier than when they passed on.

7. The deceased person imparts a specific message, often verbally, in person, via phone, fax, computer, letter or text message. Additionally, you may also just “know” what the message is.

According to 1927’s Proceedings of the Society for Psychical Research, in 1925, a North Carolina man awoke from a dream in which his late father – looking very much alive – told him to “find my will in my overcoat pocket.” Checking the pocket, the man found a piece of paper that directed him to a specific chapter in the family Bible. Between two pages in that chapter, the will was stashed.

For many dreamers who have received visitations from loved ones, they feel grateful, relieved and comforted. The messages received and the very confirmation that there is life beyond death has, for some people, been a life changing experience. For others, it has altered their beliefs and their perception of reality. Are visitation dreams really our deceased loved ones communicating with us? To date, there’s no scientific method capable of answering the question. It’s up to you to decide if the dream you had of your dearly departed was “just a dream” or a message from beyond.

Chaos Tolerance – A Side Effect of Addiction and Unstable Mental Health Symptoms Affecting Families

Do you live with someone who has an active drug/alcohol addiction-untreated/unstable mental health concerns-or with someone who behaves in ways that create a tremendous amount of chaos in your life? If this scenario describes you, and you are trying to love, help and support this person– it is highly likely that you are living under the influence of FOG-Fear, Obligation and Guilt.

I work with a lot of family members who are living under the influence of FOG-and they don’t even realize it. They realize they are feeling stressed, but they often lose sight of the compassion fatigue they are experiencing. Family members, who are living with someone who has an active drug/alcohol addiction or significantly unstable mental health concerns, begin to develop a tolerance for chaos. The threshold for “chaos tolerance” can become so high that family members can lose sight of how potentially dangerous or emotionally draining their environment has become. This type of tolerance to chaos can creep up on anyone-no matter how intelligent, successful, skilled, talented, financially stable, or educated he/she might be.

I have worked with family members whose “chaos tolerance” has gotten so high that they have almost nonchalantly reacted to situations that would have those of us not under the influence of FOG running for help and support. Family members often recount their experiences of extremely volatile situations (is it ever safe to stand near your intoxicated, verbally aggressive loved one who is heating a lead pipe up on the gas grill and making threats), and describe how they managed to cope (with little or no help from others) until the situation cooled down.

Untreated/unstable mental illness and addition problems affect not only the person, but the entire family. Family members often experience feeling like they are living in a fog. Things seem foggy for many reasons-some external some internal.

I believe that all family members (who are major stakeholders in their loved one’s well being) experience FOG which is an acronym for Fear, Obligation and Guilt. The combination of these three feelings creates almost a haze (or fog-like barrier) for the loved one which can cloud feelings, judgment, and the sense of what is real. Often what happens to people who have a loved one dealing with these types of concerns is that they begin to doubt how to handle certain situations because there is so much at stake.

Fear, obligation and guilt are often the roots of these feelings. Fear of what will happen if you don’t (fill in the blank). Guilt about what you should do, should have done, or should not have done. Feeling obligated to help the person or ‘fix’ the situation.

As loved ones begin to operate under the influence of FOG, they often begin to think, feel and behave in ways they normally wouldn’t. Some things that loved ones may do are:

  • Overcompensate for their loved one
  • Make all kinds of effort to ‘fix’ their loved one’s situation
  • Behave in ways they would not normally behave (beg, yell, make threats, chastise, emotionally withdraw, etc)
  • Pay off drug dealers/debts/legal fees
  • Devote all emotional energy to helping/blame themselves/feel responsible
  • Feel inadequate for not being able to ‘fix’ or find solutions
  • Act out or emotionally withdraw/Isolate from friends
  • Forget to take care of themselves/experience compassion fatigue
  • Unintentionally resort to ineffective communication

In addition to people who are managing mental health/addiction problems, loved ones need support too. It is important for loved ones to get care for themselves in addition to helping their loved ones seek help. There are community resources (Jami, NAMI, Al-Anon, on-line support groups, etc.) available to provide support. Family members, who are in the role of loving, supporting and helping their loved one with these types of conditions, would likely benefit from seeing a personal counselor for emotional support and guidance.

From seeking help and support from a variety of support resources, the fog that loved ones experience can begin to clear. When the tough get going-the tough get a support network! Don’t do it alone-seek support!

Will My Hair Grow Back If I Have CTE (Chronic Telogen Effluvium)? My Opinion Based on Experience

I get a lot of questions about hair regrowth from people who have hair loss or shedding from conditions like telogen effluvium, chronic telogen effluvium, androgenic alopecia, or medical / autoimmune hair loss. Of all of these questions, the folks who have CTE seem to be the most upset because they’ve dealt with this shedding for quite a long time. By the time that they write me, usually the loss has been going on for such a long time that the effects have started to become noticeable. Of course, they want reassurance that once they are able to get the shedding to stop, they will regrow their hair and move on with their life. I will discuss this more in the following article.

The Clinical Definition Of CTE And Why You Must Stop It: You may well already know this, but technically chronic telogen effluvium means that you have been shedding over 10% of your hair volume (which works out to over 100 hair per day for most people) for longer than six months. Obviously then, shedding this much for this long is going to eventually show up and become noticeable both in terms of a loss of volume and perhaps some noticeably thinning areas on some parts of your scalp.

It’s quite likely that you are regrowing hair while this process is going on, but because you are losing it so rapidly you can not make any real gains. In other words, your scalp is kicking these hairs out before they can contribute to any real improvements. So, it’s vital that you are able to stop this cycle as soon as you can.

Now, chronic telogen effluvium is commonly caused by a trigger that you either can not find or can not seem to fix and this is what makes treating it so difficult. It’s sometimes a process of trial and error, and of slowly trying and evaluating different things until something finally works. And sometimes, unfortunately, the treatments will change our hormones even more or kick off another trigger that only perpetuates the problem. This is why you have to move as slowly as you can when trying out these treatments and why you should only introduce one thing at the time.

Your Hair Has Probably Been Regrowing All Along, But It Can’t Catch Up: What is happening right now is that you’re in the middle of a cycle in which your hairs keep going into the resting phase and then shedding out once again. This really doesn’t have much to do with your regrowth process. It’s actually happening but it just can’t keep up. You have probably been regrowing hair all along, only to shed it out again. If your loss was due to androgens or DHT, then this cycle would be a bit different. You’d have AGA instead, and AGA does commonly affect both the quality or quantity of your regrowth, but chronic telogen effluvium generally does not (unless it has gone on for so long that it has kicked off AGA or has started to affect or thwart your follicles.)

In some cases, losing this much hair this fast will cause some inflammation of the scalp which can affect your follicles and your regrowth. If this is the case, there is a lot that you can do to soothe and to heal the scalp. Still, this alone is not going to help as much as it should if you can’t stop this cycle from continuing to repeat itself. Your first priority should be to find your trigger and then to treat it once and for all, with an eye toward prevention from recurrence. Once you’ve back to stable levels of hair loss, then you can address stimulating your scalp and reducing any inflammation so that your regrowth will be quick, vigorous, healthy, and thick.

The Rush Limbaugh-Barack Obama Matchup

As someone who has listened, off and on, to Rush Limbaugh's radio show for some 20+ years, I must be something unique since I can not say I qualify as one of his "ditto-heads," ie, people who totally subscribe To everything the Rush-man preaches.

I also can not say that I share what looks to be the true reverence for the guy that many of his other 20,000,000 listeners profess. To be frank, Rush Limbaugh is a pompous blowhard as well as being frequently obnoxious, often egotistical, and possibly hypocritical and insensitive, all of which would suggest I do not like or respect the man which would be an incorrect assumption.

Point is, despite his negatives his positives far outweigh them. He may be all of the above but Rush Limbaugh is our pompous, obnoxious, egotistical, hypocritical, insensitive blowhard and easily the most valuable asset the American Conservative movement has in its arsenal.

Rush Hudson Limbaugh, 58, a thrice married, thrice divorced advocate of family values, an admitted former addict to illicitly-acquired oxycontin who preaches against illegal drugs, and a cigar aficionado, is essentially a good man.

He has his quirks as we all do and he also happens to be a very rich man thanks to his extended success as a political commentator and a 2002, 8-year contract from Clear Channel Communications reputedly worth $ 31.25 million a year which he signed knowing he Was going deaf.

Deafness is a significant drawback for a radio guy, although Rush successfully had a successful cochlear implant which effectively returned the gift of hearing to him. Still, he signed that huge contract under false pretenses, which is one issue I have with him even if things worked out for both him and Clear Channel. Clear Channel was evidently satisfied since it signed an 8-year contract extension with Limbaugh last year for a reported astronomical $ 400 million.

Like him or hate him, barely tolerate him or hardly know him, "The Rush Limbaugh Show" and his Excellence in Broadcasting (EIB) network, an imaginary Limbaugh construct, will be on the air until near the end of Obama's second term. The president may or may not get that term but Rush already has his contract.

Rush contends he has been proven right on his prognostications, critical observations, and opinions some 99% + of the time, as certified by an objective, outside source. I'm not sure that's statistically verifiable but that's irrelevant. I agree with him about 90-95% of the time, and vice versa, and that's fine by me.

There's no need to reclaim all Rush Limbaugh's accomplishments, awards, recognitions since he does a fine job regularly referencing them himself. Suffice to say that he has received more auspicious awards than any other personality in radio history.

Beyond that, for anyone out there who has never heard him expound on where he stands on the issues and policies of the day, who has never tuned into a few hours of his fifteen hours a week air time, rather than detailing them I would refer The curious to his website, RushLimbaugh.com. As with many other successful website entrepreneurs, he has a basic and a pay-to-watch, "Rush 24/7" additional feature which, considering his millions, strikes me as a tad tacky and rapacious.

The brouhaha referred to in this article title reflect to what's currently going on with Rush and the new president. In a word, it's shameful. The shame does not extend to Limbaugh since he neither provoked nor encouraged it.

Rush did say that he hoped Obama would fail, to which the administration reacted as if he had said he hoped the country would fail. In fact, Rush has explained, he hoped Obama would fail in such efforts as spending us into oblivion, socializing medical care in America, expanding abortion rights and overruling state sanctions against killing babies, and crippling freedom of speech by muzzling talk radio. I agree, but those policies are not the only causes for Obama's shame.

As Sean Hannity, another conservative talk show host, did during and since the last campaign, Rush has extended an invitation to President Obama to debt him on his show, all 3 hours of his show, if Obama wishes. The format for the debate would have no holds barred, with no shortcomings such as Rahm Emanuel as substitutes or advisers, no modulators to tailor softball questions, and will certainly be devoid of any teleprompters, a prospect which if nothing else should give Obama a serious Case of the hershey squirts.

Why, though, would a sitting president deign to accept such an invite from a man the Obama administration has already described as merely "an entertainer," a put-down clearly implying inconsequential? For better or worse, Obama is now America's commander-in-chief, America's chief executive, the ostensible leader of the Free World. Why would a radio talk show host, an entertainer with 20 million listeners, have the temerity, the audacity, the gonads to ask the president of the United States of America to be a guest on his program and to debate him?

The answer goes directly to the shame of it all, and to the amateur, bumbling nature of this president and his administration: They picked a fight with that radio talk show host by designating him the leader, the spokesman for the party of the loyal opposition , The Republican Party.

I guess you can not expect much different from a nascent administration that invites the co-founder of Twitter to come to the White House to help counsel the president on the economy. As that co-founder, Ev Williams commented, on his Twitter, this "must mean they're really * out of ideas."

Well, they had an idea a week ago, not a very good idea but an idea, after Rush's rousing speech at the CPAC conference, the transcript and videos of which could be seen on his website, without charge

See here for a slew of articles on DrudgeReport.com detailing the genesis of how the White House got itself into this absurd slapdown with Limbaugh: DrudgeReport.com

Do not look for any whys since there is no rational why to explain the White House actions on the brouhaha in which it bypassed elected Republican leaders such as Rep. John Boehner, Sen. Mitch McConnell, and RNC head, Michael Steele.

Essentially, Rush was elevated to the position of leader of the Republican Party by the Democratic Party. The only decent and polite thing to do was for the leader of the Reps to challenge the leader of the Dems to a contest, no?

How the debate question and the potential debate itself all plays out is anyone's guess. Rush will no doubt follow through if the invite is accepted. With Obama? Who can tell? What is definite is that this president has already tarnished the office with his buffoonery so he might as well accept. What could he lose?

Personally, I'd prefer to watch Obama and Rush engage in a sumo / mud-wrestling exhibition with the winner to run the country.

I'd be betting on Limbaugh.

Barrios Vs Segovia – Friends, Foes, Or Just Different?

Andrés Segovia has an immovable status as the father of modern classical guitar, he put the foundations for all that came later. Without him this modest instrument today would be relegated only to popular and folk music.

That said, there is also many people who criticize his attitudes and even his playing technique, he is no more untouchable for the new generation of guitarists.

One thing that many people consider notable about Segovia is his relationship with guitar composer Agustin Barrios Mangore, whose name today is present almost always in the repertoire of classical guitarists and is often considered one of the finest composers for the instrument (as a Chopin of the guitar, quoting John Williams).

Despite the recognition Barrios receives today, he was relatively unknown in the world of classical guitar during his lifetime. He didn’t tour Europe or the United States, he played concerts in Latin America, with success, but the small market didn’t permit him make a great amount of money. He didn’t become a world figure, unlike his counterpart Segovia, who filled prestigious theaters in the most important cities in the world.

Although Barrios came from a country relatively isolated from the musical world, we can’t say that he didn’t have the chance to burst his career. He spent a good deal of time in one of world’s cultural centers of the time: Buenos Aires. He didn’t take advantage of this favorable environment, he dedicated to play concerts and make records consistent of mostly popular tunes, and stayed away from the growing classical guitar community in Buenos Aires. Llobet, Segovia and other notable guitarists regularly traveled to play concerts in this city with a great and welcoming public.

Barrios directed himself more towards the popular music public, this was due to several reasons discussed elsewhere. Later, he had another big opportunity to further his career, when meeting Gino Marinuzzi, the world famous conductor of La Scala Opera of Milan in Rio de Janeiro. He played a private concert for the notable musician and some of his friends and were warmly congratulated. If he had maintained contact with Marinuzzi, he could have made some contacts with impresarios in Europe and arrange some concerts.

Other, and probably the best opportunity he had (although this time it didn’t depend much of him) was when meeting Andres Segovia. The Maestro Segovia, at the time they met, still wasn’t the world authority of guitar that he would become in later years, but was nevertheless in a much better position than Barrios, he was playing concerts in South America and Europe.

Segovia had heard about Barrios before they met in 1921. Miguel Herrera Klinger (an Uruguayan biographer) declared that in certain occasion he overheard a conversation in a guitar store in Buenos Aires between Andrés Segovia, Regino Sáinz de la Maza and Domingo Prat regarding Barrios. They were discussing about the metal strings the Paraguayan used. Sáinz de la Maza was the only one who did not reject steel strings, as long as it was Barrios who played on them. To what Segovia said: “Well, as far as I’m concerned, I wouldn’t know what to do with that wire fence”. This happened around 1912, when Barrios still wasn’t a mature guitarist and Segovia was just starting his career.

They met finally in 1921, in Buenos Aires. Segovia was gaining more and more recognition at this time, he was in a much better position that Barrios, that determined the way that the encounter happened: Barrios attending a concert by Segovia. After the concert they where introduced by a friend of both. They talked politely and Barrios promised to visit him.

This visit happened some time later in Segovia’s home (Barrios was the one who had to go after Segovia). Klinger declared about this encounter: “Barrios played a cascade of musical gems for the great Segovia who was surprised…better yet: he was floored. Nearly 2 hours later he was congratulated by the Maestro. One particular work he liked very much and indicated he would play in his concerts. Barrios gave him an original copy with a dedication. The work that Segovia said he would like to program in his concerts he never played. And logically so: if he had played it, with the extraordinary abilities he possessed he would have elevated Barrios to inaccessible heights, thus detracting from his own artistic prestige.”

The work that Klinger is talking about here is La Catedral, one of Barrios masterpieces. There is the possibility that Barrios never got to give a copy to Segovia, as he hadn’t any with him, he had to ask a friend to send it from Uruguay. We don’t know for sure if the copy arrived at time, before Segovia left Buenos Aires. But if Segovia had been sincere he would have helped Barrios to arrange concerts in Europe and the United States. Many years later, Barrios would realize that Segovia wasn’t his friend and say about him that he was “deaf in the heart”. Barrios acknowledged that Segovia was an outstanding technician but he didn’t see himself as being in any way “less of a technician”. Barrios was proud of his identity as a composer, which involved skills and talents quite beyond the “mere” acquirement of physical virtuosity.

This is the commonly accepted version, that Segovia had some envy and fear of being replaced by Barrios as a guitar authority, and because of that he ignored him. There were also other reasons for that rejections that weren’t related to competition. These are technical and musical reasons.

Segovia was famous as a harsh critic, he never doubted of criticizing important musical figures like Narciso Yepes and his 10-string guitar, Paco de Lucía and Abel Carlevaro. He had a clear vision of what classical guitar should be and didn’t accept anyone who was heading in another direction. Barrios was one of them. Barrios played using metal strings, a really good reason for Segovia to reject him. Also it could be that he didn’t like the music of Barrios, as it had sometimes a Latin American folklore character. He despised anything that related the guitar to folk music.

It is famous the quotation of Segovia saying that Barrios “isn’t a good composer for the guitar”. David Norton, the student that asked Segovia about Barrios in a masterclass made the following post in the online forum at delcamp.com:

Everyone here knows the quote: “In public, I heard Segovia say that ‘Barrios was not a good composer for the guitar.'” Richard Stover has repeated this statement for years, as a mantra of sorts.

But that’s not the whole story. This post is. You see, as fate would have it, I was the student who asked Segovia about Barrios that afternoon, and this excerpted quote is his response to me.

The context is this. Segovia had done a masterclass at California State University – Northridge (CSUN). I’m thinking this was April 1981 or 1982. Not important. The class was concluded and I, along with 20 or 30 others, was up in front hovering. Circumstances were such that Segovia was answering a few questions from the students. I found myself not 4 feet from him, with Stover (my teacher at the time) right next to me.

I asked, “Maestro, what is your opinion of the music of Barrios which has become so popular recently?” His wife asked me to repeat it, because naturally they were not really listening. I did, she translated.

Segovia paused, and it was clear that he was struggling for the right words. “Barrios …. he was not …. he did not write …. all small pieces (he gestured with his hands, thumb and forefinger indicating smallness) …. not like Ponce, who wrote large. No, in comparison to Ponce or Castelnuovo, Barrios is not good composer for la guitarra.”

Stover only really heard the last bit. He was several shades beyond furious with me for asking: “You HAD to ask HIM, in front of God and everyone!! And he just dismissed my entire life’s work. Thank you very much!!.” And he stomped off. A week later, he apologized for over-reacting, and said “So what? He’s an old man, who cares what he thinks? People with any brains know better about Barrios.”

And no one who wasn’t there that afternoon would ever have known of this conversation, if Stover himself hadn’t spent the following years restating it over and over, and then attacking it.

So there you have it, at least as well as I recall the incident from 23-24 years ago. In context, a 90-year-old man, who was obviously very fatigued from 3 hours of teaching, speaking in English (which was never his strong point), and his actual statement is not nearly as damning as the sound-bite Stover has published over the years.

Make of it as you will.

There was another encounter between the two masters, many years later, at the end of Barrios’ life. In March of 1944 Segovia visited San Salvador to play a concert. The two masters met and spent several hours chatting in Segovia’s hotel room. Not even a note was played, as Barrios was in bad physical shape and Segovia felt a certain amount of pity for his “foe”, as he was forgotten and poor in a relatively isolated country and Segovia knew the fame and recognition that his talent merited.

They had a polite and cordial meeting, where Segovia left Barrios a set of gut strings as a gift.

This story sheds light to his opinion regarding Barrios’ music. Segovia admired Barrios as a musicianship but didn’t want to popularize his music with a folk character, his goal was to show to the world that the guitar could be considered an instrument of art music. This could also be mixed, but I doubt it, with jealously.

We can blame Segovia for not showing Barrios to the world, but Barrios never did much to become what he should. He wasn’t interested in it. His music was for the people he knew. This can be understood in his biography below.

We can’t know for sure the reasons for Segovia rejecting Barrios, we can only speculate. What we know is that a big opportunity was wasted both by Barrios and Segovia to make classical guitar even greater.

I’m Scared My Husband is Going to Leave Me – Tips and Advice That May Help

I recently received a pretty heartbreaking email from a wife who felt that in the next few days, her husband was going to leave her. The two of them had just not been getting along due partly to the stress of their financial situation. They both were at their wit’s end, but the wife was willing to stick it out and work on the marriage, and the husband was not. He had been alluding to packing his bags and leaving. She suspected that he would promptly file for divorce not long after that.

The wife was beside herself. She stressed that she “could not live without” her husband and did not know how she could survive without his love and support. She was trying to come up with a plan to convince him to stay. But she was meeting a lot of resistance. She had tried reasoning with him. She had tried debating. She had tried guilt. And, recently she was contemplated begging. Basically, she told me that she was willing to “do whatever it took” to keep him from walking out the door.

She wanted my advice as to what might work best to convince him not to leave her. I will tell you what I told her in the following article.

Even If You’re Scared That He’s Going To Leave You, Don’t Let The Fear Drive You: I have to get this out of the way and just say it. Fear is not a trait that is generally perceived to be attractive. The truth was, this wife had already laid her cards on the table numerous times. She had made it very clear that she did not want to live without her husband and wasn’t sure if she could. So, continuing to tell him this was no more likely to drive the point home than the numerous previous tries.

Honestly, I felt that the desperation and fear that she was wearing on her sleeve was only making her situation worse. I dialogue with so many men in this situation and they almost always tell me that this type of behavior only wants to make them leave that much faster.

When I told the wife this, she responded with “well, do you think I should play hard ball then and tell him to just leave if that’s what he wants to do? Because I’m not sure that I can pull that off since him leaving is my worst case scenario.” No actually that wasn’t what I was suggesting. Because this strategy will also bring about the negative emotions and reactions that you want to avoid.

Instead, you want to focus on things that are going to bring about some relief and some positive emotions. You have to set it up so that you’re luring him toward you rather than pushing him away with tactics that are only going to make him want to escape the situation.

You’re Better Off Appearing Rational And In Control: I know that this might be difficult, but your best bet is to change tactics and try to be rational and non threatening so that it’s no longer necessary for him to continue to avoid or thwart you. And I felt that the wife needed to make the first move to give her husband a glimpse of her new tactic. Yes, she was going to talk about him leaving her. But she was going to go about it in a new way.

I wanted for her to calmly sit and down and tell him that she suspected that he was considering leaving. She was then to ask if there was anything that she could do to make the situation better. I also suspected quite strongly that the husband was going to continue to resist and assert that it’s was too late and there was nothing that she could do.

However, instead of responding like she always did, I wanted for her to show a bit of restraint. And rather than begin her speech about how she couldn’t live without him and how wrong it was for him to leave, I wanted for her to just state that although she was very sorry to hear that, she only wanted for things to improve between them. If he needed some time and space for that to happen, then so be it. She was not to be angry or desperate. I merely wanted for her to state the facts and to come off as empathetic.

Basically, I wanted for her to get the point across that she only wanted both of them to be happy – preferably together. I wanted for her to leave the impression that she was no longer going to fight with him. Yes, this might be scary and risky. But the reason that we do this is because it allows us more access to them (which we very much need) during this process.

And in the days to come, we are going to move slowly and use this to our full advantage. The real goal is not to try to talk him into something that he’s not receptive to right now. The real goal should be to change his perceptions so that he’s looking at you, and the marriage, in an entirely different way at the end of this process. You must show him the strong, rational, and laid back side of yourself rather than the needy and desperate one right now.

How To Make Homemade Carp Baits And Readymade Boilies The Best Ever!

Making world class carp baits is not just an art form and a science, but an extension of your own self. You can do it with the right knowledge and enough practice and catches feedback to hone your skills and experience, so things become as instinctive as they are for carp! Carp are constantly dynamically adapting individuals so the concept of the ultimate carp bait is misleading, however you can constantly adapt baits to keep your results much higher than the herd using readymade baits! For the best, read on now!

It might surprise you to discover I see fishing bait as an extension of my journey into ultimate personal health and nutrition and vitality and longevity. Carp are great teachers; they are our long lost ancestors! Carp really do respond to substances that we respond to, hand it is amazing how many substances that carp are renowned for being stimulated by such as chilli oleoresins in hot peppers etc and spirulina and now regarded as super foods by modern science!

Nutritionally speaking baits are about energy as all nutrition is diverted towards vital energy for survival, be it proteins, fatty acids, terpenes, carbohydrates, fats and a multitude of substances whatever they are, that ultimately assist in promoting the most energy efficient metabolism of the human or carp body.

But bait is not about feeding fish unless you happen to own a fishery and want to exploit paying anglers and charge then basically for feeding your fish. Angling bait is not about feeding fish or supplementing natural diets, but about inducing feeding behaviours even if merely curiosity feeding. Far too many anglers get caught up in how much of a bait will be biologically available and use mathematics to try to discern and refine limiting amino acids effects so maximised levels of nutrition are utilised and converted into tissues for muscle fibre regeneration and growth and repair etc and not for fueling metabolism and all pathways and roles requiring energy, from respiration to muscular contractions used in swimming to locate food and equally vital gill movements etc.

But frankly you can out-fish readymade baits sorted for amino acids simply by exploiting habit-forming (even addictive,) and exceptionally potent bioactive and enzyme-active bait substances etc within your own homemade baits. You could also do it many other ways, including using very high doses of fermenting products or bye-products within your baits. Certainly only a proportion of what is available that stimulates carp feeding is supplied by fishing bait companies and there are very many other suppliers and substances that are very potent indeed than these companies will generally admit!

Of course carp bait companies favour using substances that will be most profitable to them. In fact most of the more potent substances in readymade carp baits are not used in anywhere near the levels that you can use them within homemade carp baits, in order to out-fish readymade baits. Fishing bait companies do not advertise that fact in the flashy magazines do they?

As you can tell, I am not the biggest fan of the whole commercial side of fishing, and every time I see a flashy magazine with yet another round or barrel shaped boilie or pop up bait it just makes me laugh at the amount of conditioning and brain washing taking place because smooth-surfaced heated readymade boilies are not the ultimate bait and can easily be out-fished!

Why do you think the average angler is disappointed with his results using readymade baits? Surely fish should be jumping on the bank for them if they are as good as they are advertised! But in fact I know of some of the latest leading brand readymade boilies that have been used for pre-baiting on some high profile waters deliberately to prime fish for video making and the fish have left the readymade baits alone for two full weeks before the baits broke down without being eaten! I will not mention the brand here but it is one of the biggest leading brands in the UK and not Nash although they have obviously taken a bashing anyway, but if you want details about which bait I am referring to you can contact me to find out!

I might add that many companies will market a new bait based on results of field tester catches where they are provided with a far more potent version of a bait than the version the public will actually will be buying as the next big thing! I hope many of you take good note of this! Not all readymade bait companies are this crafty but if you find your results are average then think about making your own so you can always ensure your baits are even better of those that initial field testers get hold of!

Bettering bait is all about having a control bait and constantly experimenting and refining with slightly refined versions of that bait, altering levels of substances, substituting some for alternative ones and so on – really exploiting the fact you have 2 or 5 rods. Few anglers realise that even using 3 homemade baits each with a different flavour levels can hook different fish in a water due to the fact that each individual fish has a unique degree of sensitivity to any particular substance.

The most optimised and most functionally-effective bait is about guaranteeing the most potent continual release of feed-triggering bait substances which are most highly concentrated in solution possible; and that really sums it all up!

All heated bait is very seriously impeded in its functional potential to catch fish because bait substances in concentration in solution are the big key to the most successful baits and heated baits are coagulated and sealed so very little soluble substances are available to form concentrated impactful solution being sealed into the matrix of the bait! These heated baits have damaged under-optimised proteins so perform far below maximum potential and it really makes me mad that heated boilies are claimed to be the ultimate carp nutrition, the ultimate bait format.

In fact they are the crutch for anglers without the confidence to fish with truly optimised baits that do their real job of becoming mainly solution within 3 to 6 hours. Anglers in the main do not realise that it is far more potent to fish with a bait actively breaking down that with one that sits as a round or barrel shaped blob for 12 or 24 hours or more! I tested this over the decades and I have no doubt now that I know I get better results when I reel in with half a bait left on undissolved compared to reeling in with complete baits left on intact and undissolved. I have been promoting the fact that wrapping a heated boilie bait in paste is simply a sign that boilies are a faulty stimulation delivery mechanism and the paste is simply a pathetic last resort sticking plaster proving this! In the sixties and seventies highly soluble paste was known as the superior delivery system. Just because the paste baits of the time were not made with certain kinds of materials we have today and so could be sucked off by roach and other nuisance fish does not change the fact that paste is superior in stimulating fish than heated boilie baits. It is so ironical that now there is that hilarious situation where readymade boilies are being rolled, heated, and then are being crushed by anglers wishing to use them as feed like this because the little light has lit up inside their heads that heated baits are a faulty drastically reduced function under-optimised stimulation mechanism and that all heated boilies have this flaw!

You might be one of those anglers yet to figure things out and maybe you prefer to sit behind rods with baits delivering minimum stimulation possible. The fact is that the longer the time a bait sits intact in water the less and less it delivers stimulatory concentrations of solution.

When things get to the point where fish appear to only take washed out leached out boilies, then something is very clear. Many wary fish avoid fresh readymade boilies and this seems to be a challenge to far too many anglers to figure out. You do not need to wash out boilies or soak them in lake water to make them catch fish. You simply avoid using readymade boilies full stop. Is that so hard to understand? The biggest fish I hooked on Rainbow Lake including a world record fish came on soft alternative bait not hard stereotypical readymade boilies. I know for a fact that Martin Locke highly rates easily broken down baits for lake records, both on Rainbow and popular day ticket commercial waters such as Elphicks in Kent.

All you need to do to catch wary fish that are avoiding fresh boilies is try fresh paste on a paste coil on your rig, and use small fresh soft and also air dried paste free baits regularly introduced and maybe use a big ball of paste around your entire rig for example. Fish are rarely wary of soft baits. In fact the quickest most effective way to introduce a totally new bait mix to a water is not to use boilies at all, but using paste. I myself and my ebooks readers specially requested feedback have proven in massive Spanish and eastern European lakes etc as well as on commercial, and syndicate and day ticket waters here in the UK.

The very best homemade baits I can make contain 100 to 150 milliliters of liquid foods including other things such as active fermentation substances, digestive aids, multi-purpose enhancers, addictive and habit forming substances and far more than this. Think and focus on how much you can make your baits as effectively as much as possible and ensure when they actively dissolve they are producing the most exceptionally potent solutions in maximised concentrations when in action!

I do not recommend using liquid egg as a binder; it is the most obvious danger signal any wary carp detects and the vast majority of carp baits have been made using egg. Egg seals everything soluble far more inside the bait so it cannot pump out in optimum concentrations therefore guaranteeing that all such baits vastly under-perform; this is the sad truth about any readymade bait made with liquid egg. Eggs also inhibit digestion very significantly. If you must use egg my only advice is choose something else with binding albumins for example.

I use lactalbumin, blood plasma powder and other substances instead all of which ensure baits work from truly from the centre and are not sealed on the outside by congealed insoluble egg albumins. Try washing heated egg off a plate and see how insoluble it is. If egg is all you can get, use whole egg powder instead of liquid egg. Whole egg powder will make baits firm right through but not seal baits as much as liquid egg although it will still make very definitely under-performing baits compared to using far more soluble materials instead. At last resort, using whole egg powder is better than using egg albumin which will seal your baits like glue and turn them into drastically under-performing hard bullets which is as far from ideal as is possible!

Eggs contain very little to trigger feeding compared to various incredibly potent substances. So simply remove all egg liquid and powder from your baits, add instead 200 or 300 grams of very high protein powder of any kind which is primarily composed of water soluble proteins that bind. Preferably such additives and ingredients will have a fantastic nutritionally stimulating profile. Avoid carbohydrate binders totally as they are not going to turn fish on compared to soluble protein rich binders.

You do not have to be stuck in a standard kilogram of base mix type mentality. Most of my base mixes are so varied and so most often they will be a basic 1200 or even 1500 grams and this works for me because I find it very difficult to fit all I want to in the levels I want to within a kilogram measure, and anyway I prefer to do things my own way and this alone enables me to make baits different.

So many anglers contact me through my site and ask questions about their own bait recipes. They most often ask the question what is my analysis of their bait recipe and its possibilities for improvement. Inevitably most recipes people create are very much like the majority and are very standard recipes indeed and also well over 90 percent of all the bait recipes I have seen that people have shown me make exceedingly under-optimised baits; so I know for certain people need loads of help to understand the bigger picture as fast as possible! The key is testing and refining constantly yet anglers seem a very scared group, very cautious of testing bait batches, yet methodical testing is the only genuine way to refine baits to create the best baits possible!

When I ask them how much they have refined their recipe through testing different versions on three rods for a period of time over many sessions they never say they have even tested 3 different versions!

Why is it that almost without fail anglers think the thing to do is to commit to one bait recipe, by simply buying a load of additives and ingredients and liquids, putting these all into one recipe and expecting then to have created the ultimate bait, with zero refining and absolutely no prior testing of small test batches of bait of similar recipes involved whatsoever! This is simply insane!

For me a bait recipe is simply a base to start out from to refine and constantly re-define improving it all the time! Carp are constantly dynamically evolving creatures that change in response to baits all the time. Why should your bait be a fixed parameter, a fixed paradigm?

I do not subscribe to the balanced and high nutritional bait theories anything like to the degree that I used to. This fact might shock a few people but I do not subscribe to these theories as being the best approach because so many of my best multiple big fish captures have not come by using that approach; but instead by simply turning up a the water with a new improved refined version of what is basically a totally new bait! The reason for this success is so very obvious. My goal is to give the fish the most potent experience of feed-stimulatory food they ever had in their lives so my homemade baits are created solely with this in mind.

Popular readymade baits are made for profit and by their nature are a compromise of resilience, durability and attraction, and so have reduced function and reduced potency particularly if heated! They include many characteristics that make anglers consider readymade baits look like good carp baits but which actually are simply features and characteristics that make it easier for wary carp to treat with suspicion. Remove the danger reference points and characteristics fish are all too familiar with and you massively increase your success.

Make your homemade baits exceptionally powerfully potent in unique ways, features, modes of action etc and you will win over any popular readymade bait on the market. The simplest way to remove the most obvious danger reference characteristic is not to heat your baits, and keep them soft and pliable and water soluble.

A giant question to ask is why on earth do carp baits need to be any fixed shape? That is just an old mindset conditioned into the herd by constant flashy adverts showing round and barrel and cylindrical and other standard boilie shapes.

Think about it for a while and look up the actual density and shape of all the richest protein dense natural food items and inevitably they are soft and pliable, from the meat of mussels and snails to larvae, insects and frog spawn and snails eggs etc. Even other fish such as fry which carp predate upon despite being fed loads of high protein baits are soft and pliable.

None of these baits look and feel like marbles or little barrels. Machine formed baits predominantly form smooth surfaced baits and even if they have ridges and so on, machine formed boilies are still hard compared to natural foods. The chitin carapaces of mollusks are not the thing that turns fish onto feeding. It is the substances they crave inside, which are soft that stimulate them. It is very easy to be more successful when you actually really look into how and why fish are triggered by natural substances within their natural foods.

In effect over a period of 22 sessions of one particular water, I had more fish over 40 than all by one person, who fish loads more than me anyway, and I fished a new homemade bait each time I fished. This and countless other experiences have shown me that this approach does out-fish established readymade baits predominantly used by the herd on a water. In this case it was Mainline, Essential Baits Nash, Carp Company, Baitcraft and Mistral Isotonic baits that were out-fished, but it could have been any baits including Ultimate Carp nutrition or even the CC Moore baits.

Even though I am a CC Moore consultant my homemade baits still out-fish their baits purely because the total functional format, combined potency, unique characteristics and modes of action and impacts of my baits are optimised far beyond what is profitable for any bait company to offer as a mass produced readymade bait without going bankrupt, especially in this financial climate!

Also my baits take a significant amount of time to prepare because they are designed to be active on multiple levels, and by this do not solely mean just on an active enzyme basis but many other ways. It often makes me wonder why my bait secrets ebooks and my Crafty Carper magazine articles are not read in more creative ways because the answers and inspirations are all there yet so many anglers seem to want to play it safe and merely aim to reproduce what looks and acts like a very standard under-optimised readymade bait and this lack of pushing forward in creativity saddens me.

Then again I have 35 years experience of making homemade baits including 6 years researching and testing baits and comparing results on all kinds of baits pretty much on a full time basis, so my confidence and instinctive awareness about what works is a little different to the average angler using readymade baits who is just starting out making homemade baits in order to out-fish readymade baits and fulfill their dreams!

When your bait is optimised for water solubility, and maximised for break down between 3 and 6 hours you have a winner. Easy – just test a small batch of each recipe in a glass of water and time the break down.

The big key about bait is ultimately they need to stimulate as many chemoreceptors as possible and to do this all your bait substances need to be water soluble. I use high potency high PPC liquid lecithin with any oil / essential oil / terpenes / oleoresins etc that I use. This vastly improves dispersal of all bait substances synergistically improving digestion and triggering feeding also.

I steer well clear of basing baits upon any carbohydrate and cereal based binders and also avoid soya – this actually inhibits digestion and is a far too familiar potential threat marker – just like eggs, which also inhibit digestion. The only aim of substances in my baits is to deliver concentrated feeding stimulation – I Never aim to feed fish. I have over the years caught more fish by constantly changing my recipes each time I go to a water so each time fish experience a new unique feeding experience they have least reason to fear – no prior hooking on such bait… This flies in the face of BNV and HNV theory which I have tried in vain to prove is better than my own approach – but that’s why HNV and BNV are just theory – and flawed – massively!!!

The fact is that scientists cannot even measure the actual levels of protein turned into tissue accurately in humans using just 2 foods combined. So to claim it can be done with carp is just hilarious. Just because a fish meal packet profile states 94 % digestible protein it is so misleading. In the case of LT94 for instance this figure actually applies to tests on mink – but the first limiting amino acid Ultimate Carp Nutrition experts will not admit flaws in their approach…..

Basically feeding triggers, and bioactive most potently thermogenic and enhancing active metabolic antioxidant substances including short peptide chain low molecular weight substances, short and medium chain fatty acids, addictive peptides, thermogenic herb and spice extracts, alternative betaines etc are what I focus on more than Anything else.

My baits are basically the most biologically available very water soluble powerhouses that are actively breaking down and self-digesting and improving digestion when within carp. They can out-fish any readymade bait and that has been my finding fishing against all readymade baits fished on second and third rods over the years. These days my best baits are optimised to become instant-acting addictive solutions with exceptional potency to act upon chemoreceptors on multiple levels exploiting olfaction and chemoreception and palatial and throat and other internal responses to the maximum! For me this is the proven method of how to make carp fishing bait irresistible.

Remember, bait substances are doing one thing and that is inducing biochemical changes including brain releases of amino acids and hormones that directly cause feeding that make fishing hooks get inside carp mouths!

I personally do not go for bulk and volume in terms of bait. I go for predominantly for maximum bait potency! This means all kinds of bioactive substances, thermogenic substances, habit-forming and addictive substances. I would rather sit behind 3 rods with homemade baits optimised for solubility and maximum potency than sit in a swim with any readymade bait that is made for profit and is steamed or boiled; all cooking drastically reduces bait function, solubility and bioactive potency!

I have focused much of my bait testing and research upon catfish. Catfish have a higher protein and energy requirement than carp just like halibut, salmon and trout; these all have higher metabolic rates. This is a very big clue to many things that work exceptionally productively when designing big fish carp baits!

Incredibly concentrated digestible and exceedingly soluble protein is a very major cornerstone of bait and though it is just one part of an approach it is very effective, yet so many people still make their baits not bioactive and not enzyme-active, and even make baits based on carbohydrates and this is really a great way to make vastly under-optimised baits! Remember this as carp utilise protein far more efficiently than humans.

We are land based with access to loads of carbohydrate sources and we live in air under gravity forces. However, carp live in water with all the extra energy requirements it takes to swim in water to move. Imagine how much more energy efficient you have to be to move 100 metres in water compared to walking on land in an air environment. Carp are exposed primarily to mainly very protein rich natural foods from algae and zooplankton, to bloodworms, shrimps, mussels, bloodworms and insect larvae and insects of a massive diversity all of which supply their essential amino acids within their proteins.

Without the atoms in protein molecules carp cannot form enzymes, amino acids and structures etc that allow them to take up and use oxygen in their cells; the basis of metabolism and actual being aliveness.

Sure flavours work but most only work because they increase solubility and dispersal of bait substances acting as carrier labels for bait substances which all ultimately create a change in the water that fish are acutely sensitive to. The fact that flavours can change bait pH is mute because so does any particular substance to some degree. Bait pH (when in solution of course) is mainly important only as far as making baits more noticeable to carp receptors amongst other clutter such as dissolved minerals and ammonium issuing from decaying plant detritus etc. Bait pH is far less important than having true feeding triggers in very high water soluble concentrations in baits.

When these are made biologically active things are even better as they are even more water soluble and become highly energy efficient and easily digested instantly through the gut wall! This is a massive advantage. One hidden aspect of making enzyme-active baits to pre-digest everything within your baits is that your bait will be vastly more water soluble! This is so massively vital because it is this property that allows the release of bait substances that can makes a far more dramatic pH difference by the presence of concentrated soluble feed triggers and enhancing peptides etc!

Also carp will certainly home in on the difference they detect in the water around them due to dissolved bait substances, including compounds rich in hydrogen, and even nitrogen which is the so important in building bodily proteinous tissues!

Hit your fish with as many angles of attack not merely nutritionally-speaking but using many addictive substances and there will always be enough reasons that your baits are intrinsically composed of to make your fish feed repetitively enough for you to catch loads of big fish! The best way to create irresistible bait recipes is to build them upon substances which are all intrinsically addictive to carp or are cumulatively habit-forming at the very least; think about it!
