Polymyalgia Rheumatica – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is an inflammatory disorder that causes widespread muscular aches and stiffness in the body. Common symptoms include pain and stiffness in the muscles of the hips, thighs, shoulders, upper arms and neck; fatigue; weight loss; weakness; mild fever; and anemia. Genetic and environmental factors are believed to cause an auto-immune reaction in the body, which ultimately manifests in the form of PMR. The inflammation seen in this condition is not as severe as that seen in different types of arthritis. Patients with PMR may also have another related condition called giant cell arteritis.

The Ayurvedic treatment of PMR is aimed at reducing the symptoms and treating the inflammation in the muscles. Medicines like Yograj-Guggulu, Triphala-Guggulu, Kaishor-Guggulu and Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu are used to treat inflammation of the muscles. Medicines like Trayodashang-Guggulu and Vish-Tinduk-Vati can be used to reduce stiffness in the muscles. Maha-Rasnadi-Guggulu, Maha-Vat-Vidhwans-Ras, Vat-Gajankush-Ras, Bruhat-Vat-Chintamani, Sarpagandha (Rauwolfia serpentina) and Khurasani ova (Hyoscyamus niger) are used to control pain. Herbal medicines which can be used in this condition are: Shallaki (Boswellia serrata), Guggulu (Commiphora mukul), Tagar (Valeriana wallichii), Nirgundi (Vitex negundo), Rasna (Pluchea lanceolata), Vishwa (Zinziber officinalis), Chitrak (Plumbago zeylanica), Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Erandmool (Ricinus communis), Deodar (Cedrus deodara), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Shalparni (Desmodium gangeticum) and Prushnaparni (Uraria picta).

Local applications on the affected areas are made using medicines like Vishgarbha oil, Mahanarayan oil, Mahamash oil and Mahasaindhav oil. This is followed by localized steam fomentation using medicines like Nirgundi-Qadha and Dashmool-Qadha. It is also important to boost the immune status of the body, more so since this condition predominantly affects the elderly. Medicines used for this purpose include Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Kapikacchu (Mucuna pruriens), Bala (Sida cordifolia), Naagbala (Grewia hirsuta), Trivang-Bhasma, Agnitundi-Vati, Abhrak-Bhasma, Suvarna-Bhasma and Suvarna-Malini-Vasant.

With the appropriate treatment, most patients affected with PMR improve within a few weeks to a few months. It is important for individuals affected with this condition to exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet and avoid repetitive, strenuous work.

No one wants to be embarrassed about their penis size or stamina. There are vitamins and minerals for penis growth that one can use to help with his problem. The best thing about these are that they are natural. This is excellent and runs down the risk of abnormal side effects. The last thing you want is to start taking something and it cause a bigger problem then what you already had. Read on to learn exactly what you need to get your results fast!

First, one thing you should know right off the bat is that your penis is just like any other part of your body. You need to treat it with care by eating the right things and exercising. All the secrets to enhancing your sexual organs are null and void unless you know how to take care of your body as a whole.

Second, know the things you should avoid. These may seem obvious but I will mention them anyway. Do not smoke this will lead to a reduction of blood flow to your penis. This will mean less than hard erections and mediocre stamina in bed. Stay away from steroids these can lead to a reduction of testosterone which is the main hormone in males that help create their sex drive. Steroids also can lead to the shrinkage of the testicles.

Sadness, Grief, Anger, Resentment – How Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine Can Help

In life there are many genuine reasons to grieve, to feel sad, to get angry or to feel resentful. The death of a loved one, the loss of a job, being disregarded in your work or personal life, the ongoing challenges of the material world that we live in, not feeling fulfilled, dysfunctional relationships, broken relationships, the loss of a pet… the list is almost endless.

What makes the situation even more difficult is that in today’s society we are often under so much stress that the emotion is not given permission to vent or surface properly, which can lead to other difficult emotions and stronger feelings of sadness, grief, anger etc. and it is a self perpetuating situation.

A Look At Sadness, Grieving & Western Medicine

If you are sad or grieving and you live in a "western civilised country" then you may consider going to a doctor. Friends and family may be supportive, but as the emotion/s persists you and your support group may feel there is no better option. In many cases, depending on how the patient expresses these emotions, the doctor may decide to prescribe anti-depressants to help them.

There may be some cases where as a temporary measure this can appear to help, and unfortunately many other cases where it is the slippery slope to a dependency on prescription drugs.

Of course there are also doctors who may recommend counselling or some form of talk therapy, to give the patient the opportunity to deal with and vent the emotion/s.

Regardless of the route that is chosen, Western medicine does not recognise that certain emotions are linked to specific organs, and can therefore have either a detrimental effect or a balancing effect, depending on the degree and type of emotion experienced.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Recognises Relationships Between Emotions And Organs

However traditional Chinese medicine does recognise the relationship between emotions and organs, and it is an integral aspect of how both traditional Chinese acupuncturists and herbalists practice.

Even if you have no interest in going to a traditional Chinese medical practitioner, I have found that even by observing shifts in general well being, when you understand the inter-relationships between emotions and organs, can give some helpful indications of how to begin re-balancing these imbalances.

For example, doing something creative that you enjoy can give you these type of signals. Walking in nature can also do the same, as can reading something enriching. These are only a handful of examples of potentially balancing activities. Please note that although these are helpful, it would be highly recommended to visit a good practitioner who will help you re-balance thoroughly.

In traditional Chinese Medicine there are 7 emotions which are:

1. Anger

2. Anxiety

3. Fear

4. Fright

5. Grief

6. Joy

7. Pensiveness

Each of these is associated to a different organ or organs. Let’s look very briefly at what these are.

1. Anger which encompasses anger as we know it, as well as resentment, frustration and irritability is linked to the liver.

2. Anxiety is connected to the lungs.

3. Fear or perceived fear is linked to the kidneys.

4. Fright is a sudden experience that will initially affect the heart but over time as the fright converts into a conscious fear, then it will also affect the kidneys.

5. Grief has a direct connection to the lungs and if it passes the stage of normal initial grief and manifests into chronic grief, then it may weaken the lungs.

6. Joy is related to the heart. In traditional Chinese medicine the emotion of joy refers to an agitated overexcited state.

7. Pensiveness in TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) refers to over thinking or too much mental stimulation, which relates to the spleen.

These short snippets barely touch on the relationships, which are rather complex and also encompass the five elements (wood, earth, fire, metal and water). However my intention is to introduce the subject at this time, and to examine it in terms of the difficult emotions of sadness and grief, which is illustrated in the following case study.

A Case Study – Grief, Sadness, Stress, Anger And Resentment

A patient of Dr. Jingduan Yang, who is a fourth generation doctor of Chinese medicine, a board certified psychiatrist and a contributor to the Huffington post, is a good case study of grief, sadness, anger, resentment and stress.

This patient, whom he calls "Nancy", a woman of 30, had been suffering with lower abdomen pain for 3 months, which got worse after drinking cold drinks or eating oily food. A doctor she had attended had prescribed her medication which attacked the symptoms but not the cause, after not being able to discover any physical signs of infection, cancer, inflammation or other tangible condition.

However upon attending Dr. Jingduan Yang, it became apparent that her symptoms were indeed her friends and were desperately trying to tell her something important. "Nancy" had been ignoring the grief of losing a long term friend, which was combined with five years of stress of almost constant relocation and professional pressure.

A difficult routine, eating habits that were not conducive to a balanced life and health, married with grief, sadness, anger and resentment were brought back into balance by a combined holistic approach, which incorporated a course of acupuncture, herbal remedies, meditation, qi gong, and improved dietary and eating habits. This lady was helped to re-balance, as well as understanding the messages which her symptoms were giving and taking part in practices which gave her back more responsibility over her own health.

Grief and sadness are recognised in Chinese medicine to weaken the normal energy flow (qi) of the lungs as well as the large intestines.

Anger and resentment (a form of anger) are recognised to create blockages of energy (qi) and blood in the liver and gallbladder channels. In turn this can result in pain, mood swings, indigestion, insomnia and dysmenorrhea.

This is one case study of hundreds of thousands of studies that traditional Chinese practitioners have all around the world. Even if you feel sceptical about trying TCM, remember it has, and continues to help millions of people deal with the root cause of their imbalances and not just the symptoms. It is a great way to maintain a healthy body, mind and spirit. It can help you understand and deal with your emotions before they become chronic, and can help you re-discover parts of yourself that became drowned in pools of stress and chronic emotions.

If you have been feeling any or some of these emotions, it can be a great relief to deal with them with the aid of a good practitioner.

Does a Curved Penis Need Surgery?

Most men have some curve in their erect penis, but just a slight curve is not enough to cause problems. Less than half of one percent of men will have a bend in the penis that is extreme, so extreme it makes for painful intercourse, for the man or the man’s partner, or both. In some very few extreme cases, intercourse is not possible Imagine in this case a penis in that curves back on itself, not really straight at all.

Or imagine a penis that takes a right angle. Some erections look like a corkscrew. Doctors have a name for this condition called Peyronie’s Disease. Without the name doctors refer to the cause and that is fibrous cavernositis.

The erectile tissue has layers of fibrous scar tissue, or plaque, buildup in the cavernosa, the medical term for erectile tissue.

What causes Peyronie’s Disease?

The Peyronie’s Disease is under debate because no one can pinpoint what exactly causes it. Physicians do know that whenever the inelastic tissue replaces some of the elastic tissues, the conditions begins to manifest. Usually, erections will stretch some of the penis’ elastic tissues proportionally (by a little or a lot) which causes a man to have an erection that is straight.

Now, scar tissue (inelastic tissue) cannot be stretched and is in fact hard tissue. So while it remains hard, the penis’ other parts become engorged. This process is the cause of extreme bending called curvature. Men can also have what is known as a bottleneck.

Bottleneck is described as a pinching caused by tissue fully circling about that exact spot. Pinching can definitely cut off blood flow to the point it actually shortens the penis. Injury may be the cause of scarred tissue, but it is not the only cause. Inflammation may also cause the problem.

Any kind of erect penis trauma, such as bending it to the extreme while erect and a tearing occurred, can be a cause. Sometimes injections have caused Peyronie’s. It is possible for the needle to cause damage through insertion and the push of the fluids out of the syringe which could be too much pressure. This damage might happen under treatment for ED (erectile dysfunction) when a commonly given drug called caverject is administered to the patient.

Doctors have also looked to other types of medical conditions that could trigger symptoms of Peyronie’s Disease. It is possible arteriosclerosis or high blood pressure can contribute to the disease. Men with diabetes can also be susceptible to this condition.

There is also the possibility of genetic causes. The current theory is that most of the cases are caused by some kind of trauma and a slow healing process following the injury, or just abnormal and unexplained healing after the injury.

What is the waiting period?

Each case is handled on its own merit. Surgery may be the most obvious solution. Doctors favor a waiting period, of up to two years, before surgery. During the wait, other options are available. If surgery does not sound like an extreme decision, then do some research on the Internet using the keyword “penile curvature surgery,” but be warned because the images are rather disturbing.

Miraculously, 2 out of every 10 men will experience their bodies healing them of this condition, which can be encouraging to wait. On the other hand, about 4 out of 10 men will not see any improvement during the wait. The remaining 4 out of 10 men will see their condition worsen. So that is some things to think about while in waiting.

What are the results of the most popular surgeries?

There are two surgeries that are performed more than any other surgery and one of them is call the Nesbit. Interestingly enough, the results are less satisfying to hear because a man’s penis is shortened by about two inches, more so than not.

The other surgery is performed by using grafted tissue to replace the scar tissue. The surgery is known to leave the patient’s penis with part or complete erectile dysfunction. So in cases where surgery is in the equation, waiting provides a great opportunity to try alternative methods. It may be the case that some sort of alternative treatment is better than doing absolutely nothing, given that you are waiting. They are definitely more desired than the extremity of treatments related to surgery.

What is a traction device and vitamin E therapy?

Currently, traction devices have proven to be effective and are well documented. Traction along with vitamin E treatment may be a good choice. Basically, it works by applying measured traction over a consistent period to counteract scar tissue getting hard.

This method slowly straightens a man’s penis to the correct form. This type of device can even be worn under clothing while it works, too. So while a man is working at the job, the erectile dysfunction is discreetly getting treated.

Treatment follows a consistent application over several months. Several patients of post-penis surgery use the traction device in several hospitals as well as clinics throughout the regions of Europe and the United States. Physicians will also suggest it to their patients as an effective alternative for surgery.

Compared to surgical treatments, the traction device will cost you less money and has non-existent side effects. This has the added advantage of being labeled an “at-home treatment” which eliminates the risk of experiencing unnecessary trauma and other risks that comes with procedures in surgery. Moreover, adding vitamin E to the treatment, which was first studied in the 40s and 50s of the 1900s and is still under investigation, help effectively treat penile curvature.

Are there any other alternatives?

There is another alternative, a natural supplement, called potaba, which is potassium amonobezoate. There is proof that potaba is effective enough to treat penile curvature. The problem with potaba is that the course of treatment usually involves taking it for as long as six months of treatment with 24 pills every single day. That level of treatment can be costly. There are other medication and supplements out there, but usually it will need to be prescribed by a doctor. Men are always advised and encouraged to seek a physician before undergoing any treatment.

Review – ‘A Day’s Wait’ by Ernest Hemingway

A day’s wait is an excellent story written by ‘Ernest Hemingway’. This simple story revolves round a nine year old child named “Schatz”, his father and his doctor. The story excellently portrays the emotions of fears in the mind of an innocent nine year old child. The timeline of the entire story is of one hour during which Schatz comes to know about his high temperature, gets terrified and believes he is going to die because of the wrong impression in his mind.

The story starts with Schatz entering his father’s room at 9:00 am looking very ill. There is frozen ice all around the ground. Schatz has fear all over his face which worries his father. His father calls in the doctor for a complete check up of his son. The whole trauma starts when the doctor declares that Schatz is suffering from high fever, above 102 degrees.

Schatz is confused and scared upon hearing this. He immediately remembers what he heard from boys in France that temperature about 40 is certain death. Although he is just nine year old and has little understanding of the thermometer readings is scared of this. As his father explains to him the readings on a thermometer and convinces him that high temperature does not cause death, his worries faint and he feels relieved and relaxed.

The doctor also plays a vital role in the story. He is the one who deduces symptoms of high fever in Schatz and diagnoses symptoms of influenza. Afterwards he prescribes appropriate medication to the child.

At one point Schatz fear of his certain death causes him to lock himself in his room while his father is gone for hunting. He refuses to let anyone in his room. People in the neighborhood try to make him understand the truth about thermometer readings but he was so much devastated and convinced of his death that he rejects any interference.

The story is beautifully written in a manner giving Schatz both a positive and a negative role. He is a determined child with strong will power. Schatz sends out an important message this story, ‘Don’t believe everything what you hear’. One should not blindly believe everything he is told and must probe the situation himself.

The story finally concludes when the little innocent mind understands that his fever will not kill him if he takes proper medication and takes care of himself.

The Cancer Man In Love – How To Build A Hot Relationship

How can you tell if it’s the real thing for a Cancer man in love? If you’re starting to fall for him too, would you like to find out what you can do to build a hot and long-lasting relationship with him? Are you curious about what makes a Cancer man tick? You’ll be happy to learn that life with a Cancer man in love can be absolutely wonderful if you’re right for each other.

A Cancer man in love might just be the kind of dream man that most women long to meet. But of course it’s always best to know whether he could be your dream man, and he might be if he’s your type.

One of the best things about a Cancer man is that when he’s in love, he is ready to stop playing the field and totally commits to the woman he loves. In fact the Cancer man is so true blue that he needs a woman who shares those same feelings and is ready to settle down together.

Trust is really important to a Cancer man. As a result, it’s easy for women to take advantage of him and when he finds out he can be deeply hurt. If you feel that love, trust and commitment are what make a relationship work, a Cancer might be a good fit for you.

What woman doesn’t love to be treated like she’s special; complete with all the nice little romantic gestures that show you how much he cares? This is the kind of man who not only does it because he knows his woman loves it, but does it because he loves showing his love.

Because he is so sensitive, he needs a loving, supportive woman to stand by him during tough times and give him encouragement. When things go wrong he often shoulders the blame and this can be very hard on him mentally and emotionally. He needs the kind of woman who can help him get back on the right track by showing him the person others see and appreciate.

But you’ll be more convincing if you don’t lay it on too thick and be sure to point out a few negatives along with all the positives. A woman who is sensitive to the feelings of other people can be a good match for a Cancer man.

Because he has been taken advantage of in the past, he can sometimes have a short memory. If he feels that a woman has purposely done him wrong, or a friend has treated him like he’s a pushover, don’t be surprised if he’s slow to forgive and forget. He may not get all upset and angry but he won’t forget. If you’re going to be involved in a relationship, be careful that you don’t cross the line because with a Cancer man, the line is pretty loose to start with.

So after reading this have you decided that he’s the right type for you? If so, the more you understand about what makes a Cancer man in love tick, the easier it will be to build a hot relationship. There is more of that information waiting for you, if you want it.

Massage Experiences: 8 Horror Stories … From Actual Massage Clients. (Volume 1)

These are submissions I have collected from actual massage clients across the country. (The stories have only been slightly edited and the names are real).

We can all learn from these clients who had bad experiences and never give a client an opportunity to repeat these situations. Even if you THINK you don’t do this…consider any similarities in what you might do or what a client might experience from your session. The most important take-away point is that in most of these situations the client told me they didn’t complain about it at the end because either they felt it wouldn’t help or they were too embarrassed to say anything. Hmmm… think about it: which of your clients have never come back and you don’t know why?

Horror Story #1.
Environment: Beautiful, elite day spa,
Experience: “I was having a great massage by “Sam” and realized that at times he was only using one hand to massage. Then I would hear what sounded like his “flip” cell phone closing. Yep, I was right, he was text messaging someone while giving me a massage!

I didn’t want to be the one who ratted him out. So, I told my nail tech who works at the same day spa and she informed the owner. Needless to say, “Sam” doesn’t work there anymore. It’s a real shame. He’s very talented and can read a tight muscle like few others.

I learned later, that at the time of my massage, “Sam” was on probation because another client had complained. That’s why he was let go–because he was warned, but kept texting.” Gretchen Anderson Publicist, Boise, Idaho

Horror Story #2.
Environment: New Age Health Spa in Neversink, N.Y.
Experience: “I lay on the table waiting and the massage therapist came into the room late by a few minutes. (several minutes more than just the “I’ll step out of the room while you change …”)

She had left me in a cold room with just a towel and sheet … no other props. The room was not even really a massage room … seemed more like a classroom with a table in it. The therapist was wearing jangly bracelets, slapped cold, runny lotion on me and rubbed me in no particular, therapeutic way. First an arm … then an opposite leg … just willy-nilly. With 20 minutes still left to go for my hour session, she said, “it’s not quite time but you’re done.” (The audacity of that still blows me away!)

I paid for an hour massage. And, yes I was done. I had to wipe off all the sticky wet lotion with the towel. Ugh. And, never ever stepped foot in that spa again.

It was 8 years ago and my new boyfriend (now husband) so proudly took me there … so I never complained …if it had been today I most certainly would have.”
Debbie Phillips, Life and Executive Coach, Martha’s Vineyard, MA

Horror Story #3 & 4. (Poor woman had two bad experiences!)
Environment: High-end spa in Carmel, CA.
Experience: “The spa was always really great at creating an environment that was calm and relaxing – one of those places where you feel your cares melt away as soon as you walk through the door. I was led to the room and stripped down, got under the sheet, and the therapist entered and talked with me a little bit about what I was looking to accomplish.

The treatment started as normal, but then she started talking and wouldn’t stop. I learned about her marriage breaking up, her new boyfriend, why she moved to the area, her history of abuse… I’d tried gently telling her I appreciated her stories, but I wanted to relax and would appreciate a peaceful environment. She would quiet down for a little while, but then would pipe up again and start chattering about something else.

Rather than having the experience be relaxing and soothing, I found myself irritated and agitated… and more stressed than when I initially walked in! Since I had asked her to stop, and she didn’t, I could’ve gone to the manager, but on some level I felt bad for her. Will I go back? Nope. I never did, because I didn’t want to chance running into her again. It was just too awkward an experience.”
And her second horror story…

Horror Story #4.

Environment: A place that gives massage students their first gig out of school. Experience: “I’ve been to them a few times in the past. My therapist led me to the room and instructed me to disrobe, which I did.

At the time I was having an outbreak of psoriasis, which I outlined on my intake form. Psoriasis is an auto-immune disorder that can cause dry, red patches of skin on the body, but I’ve had plenty of treatments and never had any issue with it. My therapist entered the room and asked what I wanted to focus on, but when she pulled back the sheet, she started freaking out when she saw I had some red splotches on my leg.

She was backed against the door asking me if it was contagious, etc, etc, and wouldn’t touch me, then took off out of the room. I was humiliated. I got dressed and went to the front. The woman at the desk was apologetic, but I had nothing to say. I just wanted to get out of there as fast as I could. Instead I called another of their locations and told them what happened, and asked them if they would be willing to take me in. They said they would, and discounted my service, which I thought was nice, considering it wasn’t even their location that presented the issue. After that incident, I didn’t go back to any of their locations.”
Carly Milne, Los Angeles, CA. Journalist.

Horror Story #5.
Environment: Hotel Spa (a very ritzy hotel in NYC — wall street area)

Experience: “This was my first — and definitely my last.
My business associate and I booked massages at the hotel. They didn’t have enough massage therapists available so I had to wait for my friend to finish then I would go in. The sitting area was comfortable — magazines, candles, and soft music. The therapist took my friend first. About 50 minutes later my friend came out and had a very funny face on her. She said “Your turn and I can’t wait to hear your response”. I’ve had 100’s of massages good, bad, and terrible however what I was about to experience was … so weird and so funky!

At first, everything is going ‘normal’ and I’m relaxing and feeling good. About 35 minutes into the session I hear her pull something from under the table. Her hand is on my leg. I’m thinking she is getting some oil or something. No big deal.

The next thing she does also didn’t surprise me — I’d experienced something similar in Spain. She climbed on the table and straddled me massaging my back. (Editor’s Note: It is always best to ask before you mount!)

But the next thing… blew me away. She sits on me..buttock to buttock and LIES DOWN ON ME and starts shimming and shaking and using the heels of her feet on my back. Think someone convulsing on my back. I yelled “What the hell are you doing?” “Get the (blank) off of me!” She did and said this was normal in her massage. I told her that wasn’t normal!

I quickly put on my clothing, walked out, and my associate (who was a timid sort) said “I’m so glad you are feeling that way – I didn’t know what to do?”

I went to the hotel manager and told him about the massage I had just had at his spa. Thankfully his face blanched. He proceeded to find that the massage therapist was new — very new — this was her first day and that other people has mentioned her weird session. I was dumbfounded that people accepted her ‘massage’.

Even though the hotel refunded our money and gave us a free dinner along with a hand written apology letter from the manager, I’ve never been back to the hotel. It is doubtful I will go back to any place that never tests their massage therapists first.”

Pegine Echevarria, Speaker/Author, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL

Horror Story #6 & 7.
(Again, another woman who unfortunately had two horror stories too!)
Environment: Bali, Thai massages at a local day spa.

Experience: “Thai massage is one of my favorite forms of massage and I was really looking forward to it after a 19-hour flight from Los Angeles to Indonesia. I will never forget the two hours of misery I endured in at the hands of an inexperienced massage therapist with the WORST body odor ever. I think I broke a record in holding my breath! I was so focused on finding creative ways to bury my nose in the pillow without passing out that I barely noticed the bodywork. All I did notice was the wall clock that couldn’t tick fast enough.”

Horror Story #7:
Environment: Nidah Spa inside the Eldorado Hotel in Santa Fe.

Experience: “I booked the signature Turquoise massage. Instead of hot stones, the treatment used chunks of turquoise to provide the pressure to the back. It sounded exotic and kind of mystical. Trouble was, the therapist used WAY too much oil on my back. Turquoise nuggets were sliding EVERYWHERE and dropping to the floor, while the rivulets of oil dripping from my drenched hair and nape ran into my eyes and nostrils.

The therapist also COUNTED the # of strokes on each body part! How do I know? I counted along with her…up and down 6 times on the lower right leg, circled the knee cap 3 times, 6 times up and down the right thigh. Circle the knee cap again and repeat the action on the other leg. Same routine on the arms, and then she flipped me over and repeated the whole choreography.”

Rada K. Tierney. Communications, Phoenix, AZ

Horror story #8:
Environment: Calistoga, wine country of California

Experience: “My friend Eva and I were the only clients at the inn that day. My therapist, named Sun Bear was a sloppily dressed guy with greasy long hair. The room was freezing and austere. Sun Bear put on a small space heater and I got up onto the table. His damp, clammy hands began working my back. As the massage went on, the room got colder and I began to freeze up. “Please turn up the heat”, I said. He grunted and did so. It had no effect. I got colder and more uncomfortable as the massage went on while his hands, inexplicably, got clammier and damper. He was repulsive! (On some level there needs to be a comfort level with the person whose hands are on your body, and there was none present here.)

Toward the middle of the hour I felt more like I was enduring this torment rather than enjoying anything, and I started to feel resentful that I would have to pay for it. I asked him again to turn up the heat but he whiningly said this was as hot as it got. It was the only massage experience I’ve had that had me counting the minutes until it was over. By the time my hour was up I couldn’t wait to get out of there and put my clothes back on. I was shivering! Freezing cold and sore, also grossed-out by the inept skills and petulant attitude of Sun Bear. He shot me a dirty look when I neglected to give him a tip.

Typical too-nice woman that I am, I didn’t even complain. I collected my friend, who’d had a perfectly acceptable massage with another therapist, and we got the hell out of there. Jumping into the jacuzzi at another spa later on was pure bliss, as I tried to warm my body and push the horrible experience out of my mind.

Yes, I should have gone right up to the desk and said that I’d had an extremely sub-par experience and would need some kind of compensation if I were to ever return. But I didn’t and I’ve always regretted it.”

Julie Tilsner, mom of two, Los Angeles, CA.

Again folks, as a community of well-meaning massage therapists, let us not allow history to repeat itself! As was proven here, clients most often won’t tell you to your face they are unhappy with their massage from you, and you’ll never know why. Best case scenario, they just won’t come back. Worse case- they will tell everyone they know as well as to writers like myself to tell the world! http://www.successfulmassagetherapist.org/public/45.cfm

Registered Disability Savings Plans (RDSPs) Explained

RDSP stands for Registered Disability Savings Plan. The RDSP works as a Canadian savings plan similar to the Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP). To be eligible for an RDSP, an individual must qualify for the Disability Tax Credit, and be under the age of 60. The disabled individual who receives the funds invested in the RDSP is called the beneficiary.

Contribution to a disabled individual’s RDSP can be made by anyone with written permission from the plan holder. The plan holder can be the disabled individual (if they are of legal age, and are legally able to enter into a contract), a legal parent, a guardian who the beneficiary has authorized to act on his/her behalf, or a public agency that is legally authorized to act for the beneficiary.

Contributions to the plan can be made until the year in which the beneficiary turns 59. There is an overall lifetime limit of $200,000 on the contributions that can be made to a plan, but there is no annual limit on the amount that can be contributed.

Government Grants & Bonds

A unique feature of the RDSP, and something it has in common with an RESP, is that contributions made are matched by the government of Canada. This comes in the form on the Canada disability savings grants (CDSG) and the Canada disability savings bonds (CDSB). The CDSG and CDSB can received until the year in which the beneficiary turns 49.

The CDSG has a lifetime limit of $70,000. An individual can receive up to $3,500 of matching grants, with a contribution of $1,500. The schedule for matching, for the year 2010, can be found at this CRA link: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/ndvdls/tpcs/rdsp-reei/cdsg-eng.html.

The CDSB has a lifetime limit of $20,000. The bond does not require contributions to be made. The schedule, for the year 2010, can be found at the previously posted link.

Grants and bonds received in any of the ten preceding years of the following events must be repaid to the government:

  • the RDSP is voluntarily closed
  • the plan is deregistered
  • a Disability Assistance Payment (DAP) is made from the plan
  • the beneficiary is no longer eligible for the Disability Tax Credit
  • the beneficiary dies

Is an RDSP Better than a TFSA or an RRSP?

In some cases, a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) or a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) may be more lucrative than an RDSP. This is due to the fact that individuals receive a tax break when withdrawing from a TFSA and when contributing to an RRSP. There is no such tax break for an RDSP, which instead has the grants and bonds, which the other plans do not.

RDSPs are also more restrictive than TFSAs in when and how you can withdraw the funds within the plan. A reliable financial planner would perform calculations based on the grants, bonds and tax considerations, to see which plan is the most beneficial.

Conclusion

RDSPs are a great alternative for disabled Canadians, although they are not the only option. One must weigh the pros and cons of all savings plans, considering factors such as rate of return and the accessibility of invested funds.

Still, RDSPs are a great option for family members of disabled individuals, who would like to set up a trust for their disabled relative, and the grants and bonds can be lucrative to a low-income taxpayer.

Do We Need Caffeine?

Caffeine is alkaloid drug known as central nervous system and stimulant metabolic, also it can be used medically as a cardiac stimulant or as a diuretic. In the medical terms we called as trimethyl xanthine. As a mild stimulant, the caffeine is also mildly addictive, usually it will just make us feel better, but however it can actually make us feel worse when we do not get it than we would normally.

Caffeine occurs naturally in over 60 different types of plants. But the most commonly used caffeine in containing plants are coffee, tea leaves, cocoa beans, herba mate, guarana and kola nuts. When we found in tea caffeine also called theine, mateine when found in mate, guaranine when found in guaran and of course caffeine when found in coffee; All of these names are synonyms for the same chemical compound.

In the coffee world there are two important coffee plants: Robusta / Coffea Canephora and Arabica / Coffea Arabica. Robusta coffee has historically been less expensive to grow and contains the highest caffeine content. Roasting masters of old have developed closely guarded blends of Arabica over hundreds of years. Coffee connoisseurs consider Arabica the better bean for a superior coffee. Espresso blends primarily use Arabica. However some roast masters will blend in some Robusta as a crema enhancer. Espresso is also pressured brewed with just a small amount of water per shot. Drip coffee uses the less expensive Robusta coffee, which accounts for part of its higher caffeine content. It is also exposed to a large amount of water dripping through a screen or filter. In general, the more water used for brewing, the more caffeine the drink will contain.

Some studies seem to say that caffeine in acts like drugs like amphetamines, cocaine or nicotine. These studies suggest that caffeine affects the part of the brain that trigger functional activity in the shell of the nucleus accumbens. It can be used to promote wakefulness and increase mental activity. Caffeine eliminates the central nervous system first at the higher levels, resulting increase alertness and wakefulness, faster and clearer flow of thought, increase focus and better general body coordination, and letter at the spinal cord level at high doses. Once inside the body it has a complex chemistry and acts through several mechanism as described below.

Caffeine is one of the fastest acting drugs known to man. When we drink it, almost every cell in the body, including the brain, absorbs it within minutes. There, caffeine is working it is magic as an adenosine-receptor blocker. Adenosine is a chemical which modulates sleep and by blocking this effect, caffeine inhibits sleep and therefore improvements alertness. But adenosine also has other effects – it also can slow the heart rate. Thus caffeine can increase the heart rate, which may not be good for some people. In fact, for patients with a disorder called "paroxysmal atrial tachycardia", adenosine is used by emergency room doctors to slow the heart rate down.

As we know caffeine has a good side like it can increase alertness and short-term memory, and even alters your mood. The caffeine in a cup of coffee stimulates the central system as it simultaneously lowers the blood sugar and increases the brain's demand for sugar: The result is a temporary lift. Primary among caffeine's benefits is its effect on free fatty acid metabolism. When frees fatty acids are used for fuel they spare glycogen, glucose and amino acids which would otherwise be metabolized at a faster rate. This is also why coffee is popular among students. The brain functions exclusively on glucose, and higher blood sugar levels facilitating thinking. The most popular effect of caffeine is not physical, but mental.

But unfortunately the bad side of caffeine is more unequal with the good side. Caffeine consumption may lead to insomnia. Drinking coffee with meals in known to inhibited the absorption of iron and calcium from food. Dehydration is a major drawback of caffeine consumption, and results from the drugs ability to increase urine production. Caffeine also has a diuretic effect and just one cup before exercise will trigger undesired fluid loss. Within half an hour of drinking one or two cups, the flow of the blood to the brain is reduced by 10% to 20%. Combine that with the low blood sugar, in those who have not eaten for a while, and you can start having pulpitations, feelings of anxiety or blurred vision. Withdrawal symptoms can occur after regular consumption of just one-to-two cups a day. Caffeinism, as it is sometimes called, shows up as migraine headaches and sickness. Consuming caffeine all day long – this suggests that you probably have a serious sleep disorder (insufficient hours of sleep, obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, etc). If you have insomnia, do not consume caffeine – it will make insomnia worse. In fact, stopping caffeine can treat insomnia in some people. Some of the most common symptoms of excessive caffeine in take are chronic insomnia, persistent anxiety, depressions, restlessness, heart palpitations, upset stomach, headaches when caffeine is not present.

A Finish study found that the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis increases in people drinking several cups or more of coffee daily. Unfiltered coffee can raise blood cholesterol. Coffee does not make a drunk person sober up, it just makes them wide awake. Excess caffeine can increase the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Caffeine may increase the symptoms of fibrocystic breast lumps in some women. For some, a cup of coffee in the morning replaces a healthy breakfast as it tends to cur the appetite. Increased caffeine consumption has been associated with elevated cholesterol, fibrocystic breast disease, rapid heart beat, and some cancers. You can also theoretically "overdose" on caffeine by drink that much coffee. An obvious drawback to any drug is the withdrawal symptoms that itscompany its abuse. For caffeine, this includes primarily headache, and nausea and vomiting are more severe side effects of withdrawal.

Caffeine should be avoided by those with any of the following clinical conditions such are irritable bowel syndrome, iron deficiency, chronic fatigue, cardiac arrhythmia, kidney stones, osteoporosis, ulcers, PMS. Many people who are used to having caffeine experience have side effects like headaches and drowsiness when they suddenly stop taking it. Here are some tips to cut back slowly, mix your regular coffee with half decaffeinated coffee, try caffeine-free herbal teas or apple cider for a hot drink, choose a latte or café-au-lait over brewed coffee, brew tea for less time , Try caffeine-free versions of your favorite carbonated beverages. Also you can use a substitution like soy coffe, is a coffee made using soy beans and coffee beans. Soy coffee is ideal for people who would like a healthy alternative to regular coffee. Soy coffee often has less caffeine than regular coffee.

Stop the caffeine – if you do not feel better, tell your doctor!

The Dangers of D-Aspartic Acid – Boost Your Testosterone Safely With This Secret!

Don’t use a D-Aspartic Acid supplement until you read this article, you could be actually doing more harm than good! D-Aspartic Acid is all the rage right now in sports supplements. it has the potential to boost testosterone via multiple pathways, but there is a hidden danger that ALL people need to know about when using this popular bodybuilding product. That danger is from increased estrogen production via aromatase.

D-Aspartic Acid and it’s analogs D-Sodium-Asparate and N-Methyl-D-Aspartic Acid are becoming very popular with bodybuilders looking to boost their testosterone to the very highest levels. However this has a very ugly side effect that could potentially make this innocent supplement the devil in disguise. It works by increasing something called steroidogenic acute regulatory (StAR) protein, which is a critical enzyme in the production of testosterone. It is found in the testes and is a rate limiting step in the creation of testosterone. Increasing the activity of StAR is one of the main ways that DAA helps the body make more testosterone and it was shown in human studies that D-Aspartic Acid can give roughly a 30% increase in testosterone production! This is amazing for a completely natural product, but that boost in testosterone has one downside that may actually be making your situation worse! The good news is that if reversed, it could actually make the conversion to testosterone even higher and could boost your testosterone levels above 30%!

Aromatase is a nasty enzyme that is responsible for converting testosterone to estrogen in the body. It is what robs the bodybuilder of the robust effects of testosterone and changes the balance of your hormones. As we age, we produce even more aromatase and that is often why you see men getting fat, soft and flabby as they get older. Aromatase and it’s end product estrogen are the enemy of any man wanting to keep that rock hard physique and feel his best! Unfortunately it seems that the “holy grail” of supplements D-Aspartic Acid may actually cause the body to produce more aromatase, which is something you definitely don’t want! Making all of that extra testosterone isn’t going to do you much good if a large part of it converts to estrogen in the body, so you want to stop that from happening! It has been shown in the literature that D-Aspartic Acid can increase testicular aromatase levels, making your testosterone to estrogen ratio sub par (1,2,3) which can certainly be an issue for the bodybuilder. Luckily, you can add in some very potent aromatase inhibitors that will stop the conversion of testosterone to estrogen by binding and locking up aromatase! You will want to use a combination of a competitive inhibitor of aromatase and a suicide inhibitor of aromatase to maximize the benefits of D-Aspartic Acid!

Two aromatase inhibitors are on the market that will do the job quite nicely and they are very potent. The combination of these should give you all the boost you need to really check the aromatase enzyme and keep estrogen levels down! That combined with a pure D-Aspartic Acid product will give you a solid one-two punch that will deliver results! The first ingredient is 2-Phenyl-Di-Benzyl-Benzopyran-4-One, which is a competitive inhibitor of aromatase that is in the same potency range as prescription drugs used by bodybuilders to reduce estrogen, like Arimidex(R). 2-Phenyl-Di-Benzyl-Benzopyran-4-One has a very strong affinity for the aromatase enzyme, giving an almost drug like inhibition! This will work great with D-Aspartic Acid and it’s analog N-Methyl-D-Aspartic Acid at reducing that testicular aromatase and increasing testosterone even further. The competitive inhibitor will benefit from a suicide inhibitor, which are getting harder to find these days! The only one really left on the market is 3-Beta-Hydroxy-Urs-12-En-28-Oic Acid, which is a fairly weak suicide inhibitor, but it is very effective in combination with the above mentioned 2-Phenyl-Di-Benzyl-Benzopyran-4-One! The combination of these two is a very good addition to any D-Aspartic Acid cycle and should always be used in my opinion.

One product on the market has both 2-Phenyl-Di-Benzyl-Benzopyran-4-One and 3-Beta-Hydroxy-Urs-12-En-28-Oic Acid in addition to Ginger extract which should also supercharge the effects of D-Aspartic Acid and that is Formadrol Extreme from LG Sciences (also called Forma-D on some web sites). Ginger increases conversion of cholesterol to testosterone as well, making it a natural stack with D-Aspartic Acid. So, Formadrol has it all when it comes to being stacked with D-Aspartic Acid and the only formula that I know of that has both aromatase inhibitors.

So, there you have it! D-Aspartic Acid is an exciting supplement that can certainly increase testosterone, but it should be stacked with aromatase inhibitors for maximal effects!
