Recommended Nutrition and Diet For a Speed and Agility Training Program

When starting a speed and agility training program many of today’s athletes ignore one of the most important aspects of achieving desired results, and that is diet and nutrition. Too many young athletes tend to eat too much fast food and not pay attention to what they are eating throughout the day.

To get the most out of a speed and agility workout the best place to start when it comes to nutrition and diet is a well balanced meal. All meals throughout the day should contain food from all four food groups. If this is not possible then make sure that throughout the day your diet has contained portions from all four food groups.

To enhance your diet to deal with the sufficiently high physical demands of sports training, which requires a high rate of energy production, you will need to increase your carbohydrate intake. Whatever sport or training you are participating in, this type of energy production can only be achieved by the breakdown of carbohydrates. This means that players should pay particular attention to this aspect of their diet – more especially when considering the notorious drills of speed and agility programs, especially when athletes are given no guidance about what to eat. The heavy training schedule that most speed and agility training involves, only serves to increase the need for carbohydrate intake.

When discussing this subject, it is usual to express the form of the energy consumed as percentages (proportions) eaten as carbohydrate, fat and protein. While the typical diet for the general population is about 40% carbohydrate, 45% fat and 15% protein, the recommended dietary proportions for a soccer player (who training is very strenuous and well rounded) would be roughly 65% carbohydrate, 20% fat and 15% protein, according to Peak Performance Newsletter.

The ingestion of essential amino acids immediately after exercise increases protein synthesis, meaning greater muscle and (provided you’re training ‘properly’) more power. A very important point in protein ingestion is the timing – if you’re taking any protein shakes or bars, take it asap after exercise.

Provided you’re eating a well balanced, energy sufficient diet, creatine supplementation has also been shown to improve repeated sprint ability as previously discussed in the Vitamins and supplement article.

Some information used in this article was gathered from the Peak Performance newsletter.

Calorie Shifting to Confuse Your Body Into Weight Loss – Lose Weight in 17 Days Or Less

Ever heard of a quick and easy diet plan? Let me tell you something that may be hard to bear – there isn’t such a thing as a quick and easy diet plan. Are you having problems losing all that fat in your midsection? What if there was a way to lose that muffin top or that really hard to burn belly fat in only 17 days without those non-sense diets claiming to take off the weight quickly and easily?

Forget the Old School, Try the New School Called Calorie Shifting

My advice is stay away from all those low fat, no fat, high protein, etc.. diets that promise everything and deliver nothing. Those programs typically cost a lot of money, while leaving you feeling dissatisfied. Your metabolism will slow down with many of these “diets” and that will cause you to gain more weight if you eat more than you are used to. That means you will store more of the fat in your body instead of getting rid of it. A simple technique to rid yourself of body weight and lose weight for good is the use of what’s called the Calorie Shifting Diet. This way of eating will get your metabolism going to a maximum level which results in you losing belly fat and those extra pounds.

Here’s How to Calorie Shift Your Way into those Slimmer Jeans

Here’s the great thing about this diet – no need to starve or deprive yourself. In fact, in certain cases you’ll be eating more than you are used to. Before I go into it, let’s look at a sample plan.
1) Establish a Baseline – Let’s say for example you normally consume 1800 calories a day. Well for the first month, make sure you eat 1800 calories to get your body accustomed this steady amount.

2) Up-Shift by 300 calories – For 2 days out of the first week, consume 300 additional calories that your baseline. Example: Monday and Friday consume 2100 calories.

3) Down-Shift by 400 calories – For 2 days out of the second week, decrease caloric intake to 1400 calories. Example: Tuesday and Thursday cut out 400 calories

4) Up-Shift by 500 calories – For 2 days out of the third week, consume 2300 calories. Example: Monday and Thursday add 500 calories.

5) Down-Shift by 500 calories – For 2 days out of the fourth week, only consume 1300 calories. Example: Tuesday and Friday have 1300 calories.

6) Regulate – Once you’ve completed 1 month of the Calorie Shifting Diet, go back to your normal eating habit of 1800 calories for at least 2 weeks before you attempt this again.

Take Calorie Shifting to the Next Level with the Fat Loss 4Idiots Game Plan

The idea is that by constantly changing the amount of calories you consume, you force the metabolism to adapt. You’ll have your body constantly guessing which will prevent the metabolism from being sluggish. If you are having the same foods consistently the body will require less energy to process it. So this keeps the metabolism functioning efficiently. This is important because it is a trick that changes your calorie intake per day tricking your metabolism to burn more fat. This trick will make sure that your metabolism is doing its job all day and so you don’t have to worry about you being on a diet.

Backpacking Vs Organized Tours – A Decision Every Traveller Faces

In planning my RTW adventure, I have been giving considerable thought to the options of backpack solo, or booking into an organised tour. In my past travels, I have done a combination of both organised tours and backpacking solo and both have their good and bad points.

ORGANISED TOURS – THE GOOD…

Time Poor – If you only have a limited amount of time to go travel, then an organised tour is great as you will be able to get around and see all the things you want to, without the hassle of organising the trip yourself.

New Friends – Generally people who book an organised tour with a specific company all have similar interests. I have made some amazing friends through doing organised tours and still, to this day, keep in touch with them.

You can be lazy – Once you have booked your tour, paid and packed your bag, you don’t need to worry about a thing! You are in effect paying the tour company to take care of transportation, meals, accommodation and all the hassles involved in travelling.

ORGANISED TOURS – THE BAD…

Socially inept – Every tour has someone on the tour who will drive you nuts. When in India, I was travelling with two girlfriends and because there were 3 of us in total, we had to alternate sharing a room with another female. Unfortunately this female was an older woman who had no self awareness and was clearly an inexperienced traveller, some of the “interesting experiences’ we had with her included:

  • She did not shut the door when she went to the bathroom, I would NEVER go to the bathroom with the door open, especially when I had only known the person for a matter of weeks…
  • She did not bring adequate first aid and medication supplies, unfortunately she came down with a mild cold / flu and proceeded to use everyone else’s medication and she never offered to replace it. When we went past a chemist, she was that inconsiderate that she didn’t even think to buy her own supplies.
  • She forgot her torch, now on this tour we were camping along the Ganges for several days and a torch was essential. So every time she went to the bathroom she borrowed my head torch, the problem was that she put this on her sweaty head and handed it back to me wet.. YUCK!
  • She hung her underwear up all over the bathroom and on my chair and bed, it was not a pleasant experience having to relocate her over sized bloomers every time I wanted to sit down…
  • She would leave the hotel with the key, there were several occasions when I was stranded outside of my room and had to wait for her to return, rule number 1 of an organised tour is ALWAYS leave the key with reception when you go out.

People who don’t read the trip notes – Of the tours I have done, I have encountered two travellers, who never should have booked on the types of trips that they did. The first encounter was in Thailand, there were a young English couple on the tour, they had never travelled outside of britain and were both very young. They winged, moaned, cried and did not enjoy themselves and pretty much did everything in their power to let the rest of us know they were not enjoying the experience. Had this couple taken the time to read the trip notes, they probably would have realised what they were getting themselves into and perhaps, reconsidered their trip.

Waiting, Waiting & Waiting – Now because tour leaders are acutely aware that people are always running late, whenever you need to leave your hotel or meet as a group, the tour leaders always tell you to meet at least 1/2 an hour before the actual meeting time. This is fine if your the type of person that is always running late, however for the rest of us it means waiting around in lobby’s for what seems like forever!!

BACKPACKING – THE GOOD

Now my personal preferred method of travelling is backpacking! and some of my favourite things about this mode of travel include:

  • You don’t have to answer to anyone, if you don’t like a place, you can simply leave, if you like it, you can stay!
  • You meet some amazing like minded people along the way, hanging out at hostels and having a beer in the lounge can introduce you to some amazing people
  • It is very inspiring hearing what other people have done and are doing, my addition to travel has come out of hearing other peoples stories about what they have done!
  • other backpackers are generally very considerate and willing to meet new people and share their experiences
  • It is cheaper! You are not paying a premium for a tour company, a tour guide and their accommodation so you can cut costs as you see fit, stay in a nicer hotel or a cheaper hotel if that suits you!
  • If you get drunk and make a fool of yourself, you can just move on! You don’t need to deal with anyone the next day!
  • It is easier to have a holiday romance! One of the most amazing romances I have ever had was when I finished my organised tour in Thailand and backpacked around for a week, I met a wonderful American man who followed me to Bangkok and then onto Australia! I could not have had a romance when in an organised tour, especially an extended one as if it gets complicated, it can make the entire trip awkward!

BACKPACKING – THE BAD

At times you just want to have someone to take your photo! If you can’t find someone to do side trips, you end up getting a lot of self portraits that aren’t exactly flattering!

It can be frustrating navigating around cities and countries on your own when you don’t speak the language. Particularly if you are white and travelling to an Asian country, people know your a tourist and can take advantage of this.

  • You are a target, as a female you can be a target from male advances and this can be quite intimidating if you don’t have the confidence to deal with it.
  • It can get lonely, if you don’t strike up friendships along the way, you can end up spending a lot of time alone, which on occasion can be nice, but it is very nice to share experiences with other people.
  • If you get sick, you are on your own, there is no-one to bring you medication or look after you!
  • When you get home, you don’t have anyone to share your experiences with, when travelling with a partner you can always reminisce about the things you have done, or you can email others from your tour and keep in touch. But when you travel solo, the reality is no one really cares what adventures you have been up to, they pretend, but they aren’t really interested!

All in all there are definite advantages and disadvantages for both backpacking and organised tours, for my trip I will be doing a combination of both n the beginning, however once I have finished in Africa, it is my intention to go solo for the rest of my trip and meet some new and exciting people along the way!

Isometrics – Serious Muscle Training Without Weights

Isometrics – super fast way to increase muscle size & strength without using weights.

Isometrics is perhaps the most under utilized and under rated method of exercise. It is perhaps the best method of strength training to be used in rehabilitation and can produce increases in strength and size where traditional, weight bearing, exercise regimes have failed. Isometric contraction, normally just called ISOMETRICS,is one in which the muscle is activated, but instead of being allowed to lengthen or shorten, it is held at a constant length. This isometrics muscle contraction is not done through a range of movements but in a static position. Isometrics is based on the principles of creating muscular tension while opposing the force of an immovable object or gravity. Isometrics are done with high levels of intensity (70-100%) rather than repetitious movements typically for a period of 7-12 seconds. Once the muscle is relaxed after the contraction increases blood flow to the muscles occurs which equals more nutrition and energy uptake which in turn increases the muscle mass (size). Isometric exercise is a form of resistance training in which the participant uses the muscles of the body to exert a force either against an immovable object or to hold the muscle in a fixed position for a set duration of time. In this type of exercise, the muscle is contracted but does not change length during the exertion of force. Additionally the joint most closely associated with the effort remains static throughout the exercise.

Isometric training has been around for centuries in such things as yoga and Chinese martial arts. Even Pilates utilizes isometric exercise as part of its training protocol. Isometrics is probably one of the very few exercise techniques that has been scientifically validated.

At the Max Plank Institute in the 1950’s Dr. Hettinger and Dr. Mueller conducted scientific research into the field of isometrics. Their study showed conclusively that isometrics can increase strength by as much as 300% in less than 30 days!

Isometric Workouts were originally made famous by Charles Atlas – although he branded it as “Dynamic Tension” and in recent years isometric workouts have made a huge comeback especially in the field of rehabilitation therapy. Several devices that use isometrics as the basis of the exercise protocol have been developed by Gert F Koebel including the Bullworker.

Isometric contraction refers to the case of strength training, in which the muscles contract, but do not change their length. The name isometric comes from the words ‘iso’ meaning equal and ‘metric’ meaning distance. In contrary to other dynamic muscle contractions that involve change in position, isometric contraction is performed in a static position. Physical activities based on isometric muscle contraction are known isometric exercises. Sometimes weight lifters and professional bodybuilders will incorporate some isometrics into their workouts, often in order to break through barriers and to attain new levels of muscle strength which in turn leads to new and increased muscle mass.

Advantages of Isometric Contraction Exercises

Isometric exercises can be carried out virtually anywhere! You can do them whilst sitting watching TV, while sunbathing, while you wait in a traffic jam and well the list goes on and on. Everyday, we could if we want indulge in performing isometric contractions as a part of our day-to-day activities, such as carrying a suitcase or a carrier bag full of groceries. Isometrics are particularly beneficial with those with back pain as the muscles can be developed without further damaging the back and the resultant gains in (say) abdominal strength help to alleviate the stress on your back which in turn helps the back to heal as your stronger abs take the strain away from your injured back.

Often the main advantages are seen as maximal muscular contraction in a short space of time. I use isometric training with many of my corporate clients who simply do not have the time to go to the gym.Isometric contraction exercises lasting for 7 – 10 seconds at a time are sufficient to activate a group of muscles. When the resistance or weight is increased gradually, your muscle will become more stronger. However if you are looking to build large muscles rather than simply “tone” then you need to use some more extreme methods of isometric training which whilst being highly intense can deliver results which can rival those attained by people taking chemical steroids, especially if conducted whilst undergoing a planned supplementation regime using products such as Aminotaur which has been shown to naturally enhance muscle growth while you sleep.

Isometrics key advantage is that it can be performed without any specialised equipment. However if you want results faster and also you want to seriously increase your lean muscle mass then you can incorporate the basis of this with any strength training device ranging from chest expanders through to dumbbells and barbells.

This type of training though is intense in nature if done correctly, therefore if you have high blood pressure or any sort of heart condition then consult your Doctor before training. If your doctor has any questions as this type of training is when done correctly can have numerous additional benefits, then tell him to contact us and we will gladly pass on any information that might help.

Benefits of Isometric Exercises.

Isometric exercises can be done without any kind of machines or equipment anytime, anywhere. If you have 10 seconds, you can work a muscle group without no one even noticing you are using isometric training. The convenience and time saving is one reason why isometrics are so popular and becoming even more popular as peoples lives get increasingly busy. Doing isometric exercises 7-10 seconds at a time during the day can substitute your workout -if done correctly. A bold claim? Yes it is but I feel confident in saying this.

The simplest way to demonstrate this is by pressing your palms together as hard as you can, and holding the tension, will work your arms, shoulders and chest. To work your neck and upper back muscles, cross your fingers behind your head, push your head back in your hands using your neck muscles while trying to push your head forward with your hands.

Find a wall to push up against or something you can pull against that won’t move like a door jam. The only thing you need to remember is to use as much force as possible for 10 seconds. Using maximum force will give you all the benefits an isometric workout has to offer. Some proponents say to use 80% of your maximum – but how do you measure 80% and with my own studies I have never seen anyone hurt themselves using isometrics.

If you have high blood pressure you should not engage in this type of activity because isometric exercises cause a spike in blood pressure. Although the blood pressure typically returns to normal rather quickly once the muscle is relaxed, the spike in blood pressure can be dangerous to those who already suffer from elevated blood pressure. If you suffer from high blood pressure but you really want to engage in isometric exercises, please consult with your doctor for tips on how to lower blood pressure first.

Isometrics build muscle mass. In a recent experiment found an average size improvement of 12.4% for heavy isometric training and 5.3% with isometric training using weights equivalent to 60% of 1rm weight after a training period of 10 weeks.

Using Isometrics For Strength

To strengthen your bench press you could either get in a power rack and press the bar against an immoveable pin for a certain length of time, or hold a supra-maximal weight in a ¼ rep range for 6-20 seconds.

The first type of isometric movement, pushing against an immoveable object, is used only for strength, whereas the 2nd type, holding a weight and preventing it from moving, is best for strength as well as muscle growth. Personally, I prefer the 2nd type where you simply hold a weight in place for both strength and muscle growth.

Some say that when performing isometrics you will only strengthen the part of the movement you’re training. For example if doing isometrics in a ¼ range bench press position you’ll only strengthen that part of the movement. The truth is you will strengthen the part of the movement you’re training, but you also get a 15-30 degree carryover and if you train at the most disadvantageous joint angle (like the bottom of a bench press or point in the squat where your thighs are parallel) you actually get a 100% strength carryover through the rest of the movement.

Strengthen your weak links and everything else strengthens as well. In other words, if you perform an isometric contraction a few inches off your chest in the bench press you’ll tend to increase the strength of your entire bench press and the size of your entire chest! But if you only do isometrics over the easiest ¼ or 1/3 range in a movement you only get a 15-30 degree carryover.

If you really want to increase strength in a movement, using the bench press as an example, you’d simply use 3 different positions (bottom, mid-range, and top) and perform an isometric in each position. You’d perform isometrics in the contracted position near your chest, the midrange position, and then the extended position up top. A sample workout would be 2 sets of 10 seconds at each position with the lower position done first. For strength, each isometric contraction should last 20 seconds or less and ideally under 10 seconds.

The benefits of isometric exercise are so many and varied yet simple and cheap to implement. Give them a go, you will notice improvements very quickly and can then make isometrics a key part of your exercise regime.

Salmon Fish Oil Supplements Banishes Dry Skin in Dogs – Provides Health Benefits

Salmon oil supplement was the answer to our dog’s skin and coat problems. It started with doggie dandruff, as in whitish flakes appearing on our dog’s fur, and falling onto our rugs and sofas. Nasty!

The first thing we tried, on our vet’s recommendation, was a medicated shampoo, which helped somewhat. But every time we used it to shampoo him, it had to be left on for 10-15 minutes, and anyone who has ever tried to make a wet, soapy dog “wait” for 15 minutes knows that is not an easy thing to do! You get one miserable, wet, whining dog, stuck in the shower stall, doing the full body shake and getting suds all over the shower walls and door….Plus, we weren’t too keen on the idea of having to give him such frequent baths. So we did some research on what kind of dietary supplements might be able to help with dry, flaky skin.

We found a lot of recommendations that omega-3 fatty acids can help to combat this problem, and these acids are found naturally in fish oils. The manufacturers do make some interesting claims about their health benefits, some of which include: improving the skin and coat; anti-inflammatory benefits; improvements in heart and renal functions, immunity, and growth; and as an aid for joint problems. To our surprise, such claims were actually backed up by numerous studies and research.

For instance, studies have shown that adding omega-3 fatty acids to a dog’s diet can help with inflammation during wound healing, as well as improve atopic skin conditions. Others have verified that fish oil supplements have positive effects on abnormal heart rhythm problems in dogs.

Some fish oil supplements for pets come in capsules, just like the human version. However, in order to feed it to your pet, you have to break the capsule, then squeeze the oil out into your dog’s bowl. Or you could try to get your dog to swallow the capsule. We found that too much work! We prefer the fish oil that came in bottles-super easy to administer. Just pump and squirt the fish oil over your dog’s dry food-the amount would depend on your dog’s weight, and recommendations of the fish oil manufacturer. Our dog loves the taste so much that he will happily lick it straight up.

If you are worried about whether the fish oil will have a strong fishy odor that will stink up your kitchen or house, be sure to choose fish oil that is pharmaceutical grade. This means the oil undergoes a high filtration method that removes almost all of that fishy smell, so that it doesn’t bother all but those with very sensitive noses.

You’d also want to pay attention to how the fish oils are extracted and distilled-it should be done in such a way that all toxins and heavy metals like mercury, are removed. Fish oils don’t usually need to be refrigerated but do check the label on your bottle to make sure.

There are many brands of fish oil for pets out there, but for the above reasons, we use, and recommend, what we think is the best line of fish oils for pets on the market, those by Iceland Pure. We have gotten only positive feedback from our customers who have bought them for their pets. As a bonus, the Iceland Pure fish oils come in green, recyclable, brushed aluminum bottles. Plastic bottles can “break down” when certain liquids are stored in them, and cause chemical contamination.

Our dog is partial to the salmon oil, although the company also makes a new sardine-anchovy oil that has 30% more omega-3 fatty acids than the salmon oil.

Today, our dog is free of the flaky dog dandruff problems that used to plague him, and his coat is also super healthy and soft. Even our vet was impressed by the change. If you have a pet with skin issues, give fish oil supplements a try-you’ll be impressed by the results!

The Chiropractic Industry in the Philippines – Perspectives From a Chiropractor in Makati, Manila

There are less than two dozen chiropractors in the Philippines as of 2013 – representing a very small group of the 100,000 Chiropractors in the world, which mostly practice in countries with advanced economies (the G8 countries). You could say Chiropractic is in its pioneer stages of development in the Philippines.

Chiropractic has been in existence since 1895. It is a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health. In addition, Doctors of Chiropractic recognize the value and responsibility of working in cooperation with other health care practitioners when in the best interest of the patient.

Although there have been isolated members of the profession through out the 1900’s who lived and saw patients in the Philippines, the first Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) to set up a permanent chiropractic clinic in Manila was Dr. Uy in 1986. For the first decade there were around a dozen Chiropractors who came to practice in the Philippines of which only half remained. The next decade saw the doubling of the total clinics from 5 to 10. When I opened my chiropractic clinic in 2006 in SM Bacoor, Cavite and in Forbes, Makati in 2007 I was only the 10th Chiropractor in the country.

Since 1988 the World Federation of Chiropractors (WFC) has held a seat for the small presence of chiropractors in the Philippines. In 2006 the Asian Pacific Federation of Chiropractic Doctors (APCDF) was established to develop the profession in the region, including the Philippines. We have held a council seat since its inception and I am a current officer.

The Philippine government passed a law in 1997 referred to as the TAMA act which resulted in the formation of a Complimentary and Alternative Medicine division of the Department of Health. The department is called the Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care, or PITAHC for short. In 2009 PITAHC established the National Certification Committee on Chiropractic (NCCC) which has to date certified 22 Doctors of Chiropractic, all graduates of colleges in the United States.

In the Philippines, there are outdated laws that limit the practice by professionals to Filipino citizens. These same laws permit licensing by reciprocity and there are hundreds of Filipino citizens who are licensed and who practice in the United States. The Chiropractic profession currently is not regulated by the Professional Regulatory Commission (P.R.C.) so foreigners with appropriate residency status with rights to engage in employment and business, and who are qualified and experienced in Chiropractic, are operating their private practices under general civil laws meeting the same requirements of any commercial entity. In addition they undergo Certification by the NCCC to assure the public of their professional training.

These provisions are important for the immediate growth of Chiropractic in the Philippines because most chiropractors who are willing to relocate to the Philippines are not citizens; limiting their practices would be contrary to the best public interest of the people of the Philippines.

The next step is the formalization of a National Chiropractic Association. This organization assists in the development of the Chiropractic profession and also in the self-regulation of its practitioners. Public health education is not the responsibility of the individual doctor but it is a principal role of the association. Second education topic is the providing of continuing education for its member chiropractors and so the profession can keep growing scientifically. Third education topic is the effort towards establishing a formal College of Chiropractic so bright, intelligent and young Filipino men and women can enter the profession after attending a local eight year university training program.

Other duties and responsibilities of the national association will evolve as the profession grows in the Philippines. The last important topic to mention is the formulation (under international consultations) of an appropriate Chiropractic Law as the final stage of public safety and professional recognition.

In the meantime, Media can play an important role in educating the public of the benefits of chiropractic. There have been many highlighted stories on chiropractic by TV and newspapers over the past 20 years and many more are needed. The future for the Chiropractic profession in the Philippines looks excellent, but it also looks like it will take many years of effort and by full and complete acceptance of all members of the profession for the roles each can contribute to the pioneering of Chiropractic in the Philippines.

Arthritis Treatment: Gouty Arthritis – A Serious and Deadly Disease

Elevated blood uric acid and gout are common conditions in the United States. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2008 (NHANES) has indicated that gout affects almost 4 percent of the population.

That’s 8.3 million people. But more disturbing is the fact that gout incidence has more than doubled in the last couple of decades. There are many reasons for this including the rising incidence of other medical conditions that are risk factors for gout. These diseases include elevated blood lipids, diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. The sum total of these conditions is often referred to as the “metabolic syndrome.” The metabolic syndrome appears to be the end result of lifestyle choices that are commonplace in the United States.

The economic burden of gout is tremendous and is due to increased frequency of emergency room services, increased doctor visits, and the costs of medications. In addition, as has been described earlier, gout is associated with other common medical conditions that also carry a hefty price tag.

While most people perceive gout as being just a painful form of arthritis, it is more than that. Because of its association with the above medical conditions, it is now recognized as a substantial risk factor for death due to cardiovascular disease. What is more surprising is that this elevated risk is independent of these other factors including the presence of high blood pressure, diabetes, age, gender, and elevated blood lipid levels.

Another disturbing association is gout and kidney disease. Many people with gout have kidneys that don’t function at 100 per cent efficiency. Since uric acid is excreted through the kidneys, the eventual result is that there is less uric acid excretion and therefore gradual accumulation leading to elevated blood levels of uric acid. This sets up a vicious cycle since elevated blood levels of uric acid can make the kidney disease worse. Uric acid has been shown to causes inflammation of blood vessels which could contribute to the kidney damage as well as possibly to the cardiac issues described earlier.

Roughly, 60 per cent of people with gout have some degree of kidney dysfunction. The problem is that medications used to treat acute gout attacks such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and colchicine may have an adverse effect on kidney function. Also, the traditional medicine employed for reducing serum uric acid, allopurinol, also must have dose adjustments made in the presence of kidney abnormalities.

It is clear that gouty arthritis is a public health issue that causes significant morbidity as well as mortality and must be addressed more aggressively.

Penis Health and Nude Sunbathing: A Testosterone Booster?

Many men are avid fans of nude sunbathing, taking pains to ensure proper penis health by keeping the organ covered in a good, effective sunscreen. The pleasures of nude sunbathing are many, and as long as appropriate penis care is practiced, it can add an extra element of fun and freedom to one’s beach or backyard experience. And interestingly, there may be a testosterone benefit associated with tanning in the nude as well.

Testosterone

Testosterone, of course, is the male sex hormone and something about which men often have concerns. While few men ever actually know what their exact testosterone levels are, most men want to make sure that they are on the high side.

That’s understandable. In popular culture, high testosterone levels are associated with true manliness: a hairy chest, bulging muscles, a sperm-filled sack and a massive penis always standing erect and ready for action. While the truth is that there is not quite such a direct link between the hormone and these attributes, testosterone nevertheless plays an important role in both physical development and sexual issues, including the sex drive.

Sunlight

Sunlight is of great importance to the continued health of any individual, male or female. In men, sunlight can play a role in increasing the amount of testosterone produced by the body. This is one of the reasons that ancient Greeks used to exercise outdoors in the sun. While an indoor gymnasium has its advantages, the lack of sunlight is a definite detriment.

When bare skin is exposed to sunlight, there is a definite increase in testosterone production. One study found that exposure to sunlight on the back increased testosterone production by about 120%.

Even more impressive, exposure of the genitals to sunlight increased testosterone by 200%. (That might be one reason so many erections pop up on a nude beach – that and the presence of shapely nude women, of course.)

Add in some exercise

If a guy really wants to get the testosterone levels climbing, he should consider combining exercise with his nude sunbathing. Vigorous exercise also stimulates the process by which testosterone is produced, so engaging in a naked workout outdoors should have even more of a benefit.

One can bring weights to the beach if one wants, but it may be easier to just engage in more sports-like activities. A game of nude volleyball or bare basketball can get the job done and be much more enjoyable. (But do remember, men: you’re playing without an athletic supporter, so be careful.)

Another activity that can be entertaining is nude yoga. This has become more and more common in recent years. It’s worth investigating if any practitioners are in one’s area and if there is a clothing-optional outdoor space where a class could be held.

Take care

Remember, the direct exposure of the penis to sunlight results in the testosterone boost. This means that a man needs to go the full Monty to derive the maximum benefit. This also means that a man needs to limit the amount of time that the penis is exposed to sunlight without sunscreen. If the penis is making its nude sunbathing debut, lathering on sunscreen regularly is essential. If it has a bit more experience in being exposed, a man can parcel out a bit of screen-free penis time – but he must be careful not to overdo it!

Nude sunbathing can help boost testosterone levels, but it also exposes just how good one’s penis health practices are. That means men who are going natural should regularly use a first-class penis health creme (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil), especially if they are prone to dry or flaky penis skin. A crème that contains a combination of natural moisturizers (such as Shea butter and vitamin E) can provide the hydration to deal with common dermatological issues, making the rod appear shiny and smooth. If a persistent odor clings to the penis even after washing, a crème formulated with vitamin A can do the trick. That vitamin is equipped with antibacterial properties that attack rank member order. Employ that crème to help one’s manhood make an impact on the beach.

How to Cure Cold and Flu Naturally and Fast?

Every year, millions of people world-wide get sick with the flu and cold. A person may suffer from a common cold and flu several times in a year. They are more likely to strike when a person’s immune system is low.

Colds and flu are caused by viruses which are infectious agents that rely on a living host for survival. There are more than 200 viruses that are responsible for cause of common cold and flu. Its intensity, however, depends upon the state of health of the person and environmental factors.

Symptoms of a cold and Flu include sore throat, blocked or runny nose, cough, watery eyes, fatigue headache. These symptoms will typically last anywhere from 3 to 10 days. But if your symptoms have lasted longer than that and start to change, you may be suffering from a secondary infection. These common complications of the cold and flu can leave you feeling pretty miserable.

Here are some home remedies that may help you feel better along the way.

1. Honey: Excellent for sore throats and coughs. You can take it plain, one teaspoonful at a time or mix it with some hot water and lemon.

2. Eat Chicken soup. Chicken soup may be frequently taken because it has been found that the intake of chicken soup helps in stimulation of the immune system of an individual and hence, the concerned person will have concrete disease resistance. chicken soup may be taken in hot condition and perhaps, the steam arising from the hot soup will help in relieving the congestion found in nasal passages and thereby leading to immediate relief from the cold condition.

3. Get extra rest. Even taking adequate rest helps in relieving the cold because resting activities help to minimize the chances of additional infections from multiple sources. It will also help you avoid spreading the virus to others.

4. Drink lots of fluids like water, fruit juices and clear soups. Fluids help loosen mucus.eight glasses of water, clear juice, tea, and other mostly clear liquids are advised. Staying hydrated helps moisturize the lining of the nose and throat, which makes mucus easier to clear. But be sure to avoid caffeinated or alcoholic drinks, as they can cause dehydration. Avoid alcohol, coffee and caffeinated sodas, which make dehydration worse

5. Drink hot hiquids. Hot liquids relieve nasal congestion, help prevent dehydration, and can soothe the uncomfortably inflamed membranes that line your nose and throat.

6. Gargle . Gargling can moisten a sore throat and bring temporary relief. Take 1/2 teaspoon salt dissolved in an 8-ounce glass of warm water. Thus, prepare the saturated solution and use it as a home remedy for cold and flu. Then by using an ink-filler like application, place two or three drops of the filtered salt solution into each nose and do this for two to three times in a day.

7. Use a salve under your nose. A small dab of mentholated salve under your nose can open breathing passages and help soothe the irritated skin at the base of the nose. Menthol, eucalyptus and camphor all have mild numbing ingredients that may help relieve the pain of a nose rubbed raw.

8. Take hot water in a bowl and put some Vicks vaporub. Place your nose over the vapors and inhale, covering yourself with a towel. This remedy is good for your blocked nose.

9. Take a Steamy Shower. Steamy showers moisturize your nasal passages and relax you. If you’re dizzy from the flu, run a steamy shower while you sit on a chair nearby and take a sponge bath.

10. Take vitamin C. It’s up there with chicken soup as far as legendary cold remedies go, and there might be some truth to vitamin C being helpful as well. Some evidence shows that it can reduce the duration and severity of a common cold. . Taking vitamin C every day seems to reduce the length of a cold once you get it; however, taking big doses of vitamin C after you already have a cold gets mixed results.

11. Sleep with an extra pillow under your head. This will help with the drainage of nasal passages. If the angle is too awkward, try placing the pillows between the mattress and the box springs to create a more gradual slope.

12. Apply hot or cold Packs around your congested sinuses. Either temperature may help you feel more comfortable. You can buy reusable hot or cold packs at a drugstore. Or make your own. Take a damp washcloth and heat it for 55 seconds in a microwave (test the temperature first to make sure it’s right for you.) Or take a small bag of frozen peas to use as a cold pack.

13. Keep washing your hands! Those nasty germs won’t be able to find their way into your bod if you keep washing them away.

14. Zinc: is another wonder thing for cold that can cut colds short. While early studies showed that zinc could help fight off a cold more quickly, the latest consensus seems to be that zinc has a minimal benefit at best.

15 It’s important to blow your nose regularly when you have a cold rather than sniffling mucus back into your head. But when you blow hard, pressure can carry germ-carrying phlegm back into your ear passages, causing earache. The best way to blow your nose: Press a finger over one nostril while you blow gently to clear the other. Wash your hands after blowing your nose.

Tennyson’s Treatment of Nature in His Poems

Alfred Tennyson is a notable poet of Victorian age who also studied Nature with minuteness of detail and an accuracy of observation. Although Tennyson handles Nature in his poems but he can not acquire the prominence like Wordsworth and Keats as a poet of Nature. Wordsworth explores the spiritual significance in Nature while Keats’s dealing of Nature is purely sensuous but Tennyson has drawn and colored Nature -pictures with the conscious care of pictorial artist. Tennyson believes with Coleridge that that we interpret the mood of Nature according to our mood and that Nature is happy or otherwise. During the Romantic Movement Nature was regarded as a phenomenon to which one could turn for guidance, spiritual sustenance and psychic restoration. Tennyson’s belief often led him to describe and develop a human in terms of natural phenomena. For instance, in “The Lotos Eaters”the indolence of the sailor is elaborated with reference to the pausing of streams, the lingering of sun, the swooning of the languid air, etc.

Tennyson, Browning and Arnold lost an all-embracing enthusiasm for Nature like the Romantic poets. In the most cases the influence of Nature was on them wholesome and salutary, and symptomatic of spiritual unity of the universe. The Victorians were not able to maintain the confidence and optimist possible for the Romantics. On the one hand, as we shall see, science natured a love for Nature in some ways as intense, as anything that one can recognize in previous centuries, but on the other hand, by stressing the mechanical and chemical aspects of natural process, it look away the magic and left no room for spiritual direction. However now we can channelize the poems of Tennyson where he takes great interest for Nature. “In Memorium”is one of the most outstanding poem that serves immense evidence of Tennyson’s great interest in and love for Nature. In this poem there is calm and tranquil morning with the faded leaves, silvery gossamers, the crowded farms, ambrosial air, towering sycamore, bats went round in fragrant skies, the trees laid their dark arms about the field, the grey old orange, the lonely field, the ship walk up the windy wold etc. the pictures of Nature in this poem give pleasure and sorrow, because the poet shows that moonlight not only falls upon the poet’s bed but also on the dead friends grave in the church. Often the natural objects evoke a mood of sadness rather than joy because they emphasize human morality. In a famous passage (85) for instance, the classical procession of Nature underlines human sorrow.

Reviewing “In Memorium” Charles Kingsley thought that the idea of “dignity of nature in all her manifestations” was the root idea of the whole poetry of his generation. The Nature description of this poem gives us the idea that it plays an important part in the emotional development of the poem. In this poem Tennyson does not seek in Nature any underlying associative principle to which a permanent reference could be made. However Tennyson’s poem “Ooeone” begins with the description of a valley in Ida where swimming vapor creeps from pine to pine. On either side of the current are lawns and meadow ledges rich in flowers. Far below them roars the long brook, falling in cataract after cataract to the sea. Behind the valley stands the topmost peak of Gargarus:

“……..the clov’n ravine

In cataract after cataract of the sea.

Behind the valley topmost Gargarus.”

The subject matter of this poem concentrates by miserable experience of “Oeone” when she is being deserted by her husband Paris. Addressing mother Ida, and addressing the earth, the hills, the caves and the mountain brooks, Oeone began to narrate her sorrowful story in song. Further the poem “Tithonus” starts by the description of Nature as “The woods decay, the woods decay and fall.” In this poem there is the weeping of vapor and the description of swan’s death after many a summer. The poet describes the gradual appearance of dawn in the person of Aurora. We have a richly sensuous picture of Aurora showering her kisses upon Tithonus’s mouth, eye-lids, kisses that were, “balmier than half-opening buds of April.”

The study of Nature in Victorian poetry is inextricably bound up with the study of religion and science, since the revolution that took place in religious and scientific thought, inevitably had a direct effect and attitude to Nature. Nature must always loom large in any study of Victorian poetry, since it was one of the three or four most important poetic themes. For successful foundation of Tennyson’s poems Nature serves as one of basic functions. In “The Lotos Eaters” the landscape and scenery are symbolic of inner feelings of the mariners. There is description of ample Nature-pictures like lingering sunset, the crimson light of setting sun, the snow of the peaks, the leaf, the apple and the flower grow, ripen and fall silently. In fact, Nature, like the inhabitants of this island has eaten of the indolent forgetfulness of lotos fruit. In the “Locksley Hall” the poet addresses the nostalgic feeling by expressing the natural pictures. The poet used to wander about the sea-shore and saw the great Orion and Pleiades at night through the window. In fine, we can not consider Tennyson in terms of the Romantic poets as a poet of Nature but we see that certainly he treats Nature by his close scientific and minute observation. Very often he anticipates Nature to describe and develop the human in general.

Bees And The Environment

New studies are slowly shedding light on the important role that genes and environment play in bee behaviour. It has long been known that the queen has two X chromosomes and retains the male sperm after mating. She fertilises eggs only when the need arises to produce new nymph queens. This leads to swarming, with queen and bees leaving the hive to establish a colony elsewhere. The males are not the result of sexual mating and they contain only half a set of chromosomes. Workers are sterile females arising from an asexual process.

It has been said that we are all the result of nature and nurture; that is, our inherited genetic potential and environmental factors during our development, and the interaction between them. The same applies to bees. During the first two weeks of life, worker bees are engaged in brood duties inside the hive: cleaning, fanning the air, building the honeycomb structure, feeding the young and carrying out the dead bees. During the remaining five to seven weeks of their lives, workers become foragers. Some will focus on gathering pollen, which will be mixed with secreted wax for building the comb. Others will focus on gathering nectar, which will become honey after it is regurgitated at the hive.

Genetic studies and brain analysis at individual bee level have shown the important roles of gene expression and environment. A hormone produced by the queen activates the gene expression that favours nursing behaviour. A specific gene was identified as the major player in determining social change from nurse worker to forager. New diagnostics now enable scientists to study thousands of gene expressions at the same time. A better understanding of genes, environment and social bee behaviour could be helpful in beekeeping and in using bees as pollinators in seed production of crops such as hybrid sunflowers and onions. It also serves to promote understanding of gene expression in humans, specifically genes involved in different types of cancers.

Pollination is fundamental to sexual production in plants, and in bee-pollinated plants it has resulted in plant-animal co-evolution. Nectar and copious pollen production are the cost to the plant for its services of the inadvertent pollinator. Most bees are pollinators and they are attracted to flowers for food.

Plants are fundamental to terrestrial life as primary producers, and they maintain watersheds, prevent soil erosion, and provide shelter, refugia (places of refuge from which organisms re-colonize distributed areas), food, nesting sites and useful materials for many animals and man. Pollination is therefore essential for agriculture and environmental management, and a variety of pollinators are required to maintain reproduction across a broad spectrum of plant species. As the cost for pollination is the production of nectar and excessive pollen by plants, the maintenance of refugia are the cost of pollination to land users.

My Experience Taking the PTCB Exam

Test day finally arrived
After months of studying for the Pharmacy Tech exam and a few more procrastinating, it was finally time for me to take it. I arrived at the Pearson Vue testing center early, which gave me time for a few final minutes of reviewing the Top 200 drugs and alligation math. Those were my weakest subjects. After rifling through my study-stack of flashcards, I wandered inside and checked in.

The test center
There were several other people in the lobby, I assume they were there for a variety of other exams. The receptionist asked to see my Authorization To Test letter from the PTCB, then to place my index finger on a scanner and show my state issued ID. After signing a confidentiality form, I received a locker.

The check-in was surprisingly fast. As soon as I put away my wallet and car keys, I pulled the key out of the locker and someone called my name to go back into the testing area. The first stop was the proctor area, which is a glass enclosed room with monitors and a central view of all of the testing cubicles. I was given a calculator, some dry erase paper, pens and disposable ear-plugs. The proctor told me clearly to not erase any scratch paper work. She asked if I was ready, then took me to a testing station.

The computerized test
The computer was super easy to use and the buttons and menus were plain and straightforward. The fonts were easy to read and pleasant to look at. The test questions were multiple choice with four options just like I had read about on the PTCB website. There was a time remaining clock discreetly placed in the corner and another screen which you could see how many you had completed. The program that administers the exam is well put together.

My strategy
My strategy going in was to go through all of the questions and do the easy ones first. The plan seemed to work good for me and I felt more ready when it was time to dig into the tougher questions. There were a lot of questions which I totally did not expect, but then I remembered that ten of the questions are experimental and don’t even count. I got done with about 20 minutes to spare, which I used to re-calculate all of my math problems. Good thing too, because it revealed some that I had not deciphered the wording correctly and had initially answered wrong. With less than a minute left, I clicked the finish button.

Same day pass/fail results
The screen went blank for a few seconds, and then another screen popped up that said “Pass”. What a relief. The whole process took about two and a half hours, yet seemed like it passed instantly. Although I knew I’d passed that day, my scores and certificate arrived about two weeks later. They showed up in a big white envelope via snail mail.

The pharmacy Tech test is not easy, but I can tell you that having some strategy in mind will help immensely with test anxiety. The very best strategy, of course is to study a Pharmacy Technician Training program and be prepared.

How Drug Trafficking Affects The United States And Its Youth

Today, drug trafficking is a scourge that is affecting practically all nations and their youth. The United States is no different. According to the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA), a survey conducted by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Services Administration) and the following startling statistics were revealed:

1. An estimated 14.8 million Americans currently use illicit drugs

2. An estimated 6.4 million Americans use cocaine, heroine, hallucinogens

Drug use and its consequences threaten and affect the nation and its people from every socio-economic background, geographic region, and people with any level of education. Increasing use of illegal drugs among the youth is quite alarming. Kids suffer from life-long dependency problems by consuming substances like heroine and cocaine. Early use of illicit drugs leads to unhealthy behavior. It also associates itself with unwanted pregnancy and premature sexual activity which results in exposure to STDs (sexually transmitted diseases).

The US suffers an annual loss of about 70 billion dollars due to drug-related illnesses, death, and drug related crimes. Illicit drug users are unaware of the fact that drug abuse indirectly or directly affects their family, their neighborhood, their business, their education and their health adversely.

Harmful drugs consumed by pregnant women affect both the mother as well as the unborn child. Maternal drug abuse contributes to birth defects and infant mortality. According to a recent research, the use of drugs by a pregnant woman may result in poor development of the child after birth and they are more likely to die from sudden infant death syndrome or SIDS.

It has been observed that teens consuming marijuana are most likely to consume cocaine in later years. The second commonly consumed drug after marijuana is a stimulant. Most 12th graders use LSD on a monthly basis. Using LSD stimulates the mind but can severely affect the nervous system. A teenager can risk his life by consuming drugs and is also more vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases as well as AIDS.

With the rise in consumption of drugs, drug-related crimes are increasing steadily and thus leading to numerous drug related arrests either because of possession of drugs or thefts committed to fund the drug habit.

Autism and Picky Eaters Require Specific Treatment and Analysis

It is well known that children with ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders tend to be picky eaters.  This is probably associated with the fact that they show sensory intake processing deficiencies.  Sometimes they only eat food due to its texture as they often can not really taste it.  This can lead to a diet that is limited to only a few items, i.e. macaroni and cheese, chicken nuggets.  This limited diet can lead to vitamin deficiencies.  These vitamin deficiencies may contribute to and/or exacerbate the child’s condition. Certain vitamins have been linked to ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders and therefore it is always important to check for these deficiencies which are known to be associated with ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders when treating a child.  We consider this important especially using a sensory motor hemispheric approach to eliminate any negative factors so as to be able to get the best result.  Below is a study from the scientific literature documenting a child who only ate french fries (an extreme picky eater with a very limited diet) And some support for vitamin A supplementation for these children.

Symptomatic vitamin A and D deficiencies in an eight-year-old with autism.

Clark JH, Rhoden DK, Turner DS.

Department of Pediatrics, Medical College of Georgia, Augusta 30912.

An 8-year-old boy with autism developed a limp and periorbital swelling. He was found to have hypocalcemia and radiographic evidence of rickets. Ophthalmologic examination revealed xerophthalmia and corneal erosions. Serum vitamin A was undetectable and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D was decreased. Dietary history revealed a markedly altered intake consisting of only french fried potatoes and water for several years. All biochemical and physical abnormalities reversed with appropriate supplementation. The nutritional content of french fries is reviewed. Feeding dysfunction is an integral part of autism and closer attention should be paid to potential nutritional deficiencies.

Hypercalcemia reveailing iatrogenic hypervitaminosis A in a child with autistic troubles.

Kimmoun A, Leheup B, Feillet F, Dubois F, Morali A.

Service de médecine infantile III et génétique clinique, centre hospitalier universitaire de Nancy, hôpital d’enfants, allée du Morvan, 54511 Vandoeuvre, France. a.kimmoun@chu-nancy.fr

Hypervitaminosis A is an unusual cause of infant hypercalcemia. The way it occurs can be very surprising, as one can notice from the following case report. CASE REPORTS: A three-year-old boy, presenting important behavioral disorders, was hospitalized because of a deterioration of his general state of health associated with vomiting, cephalgias, fever and cutaneous abnormalities. A 168 mg/L hypercalcemia was found. The only etiology is a deviant consumption of vitamin A within the framework of an “autistic diet”: 100000 UI/d during three months, and then 150000 UI/d the three following months. Intoxication was confirmed by the increased vitamin A plasmatic level, and vitamin A/RBP molar ratio and by the presence of plasmatic retinyl palmitate. An emergency treatment by rehydration, biphosphonates and furosemide led to effective calcemia normalization. CONCLUSION: In the case of nonobvious causes of hypercalcemia, a thorough cross-examination must look for vitamin A intoxication. Our observation illustrates the danger of certain diets suggested for autistic children.

Is autism a G-alpha protein defect reversible with natural vitamin A?

Megson MN.

Pediatric and Adolescent Ability Center, Richmond, VA 23226, USA.

Autism may be a disorder linked to the disruption of the G-alpha protein, affecting retinoid receptors in the brain. A study of 60 autistic children suggests that autism may be caused by inserting a G-alpha protein defect, the pertussis toxin found in the DPT vaccine, into genetically at-risk children. This toxin separates the G-alpha protein from retinoid receptors. Those most at risk report a family history of at least one parent with a pre-existing G-alpha protein defect, including night blindness, pseudohypoparathyroidism or adenoma of the thyroid or pituitary gland.Natural vitamin A may reconnect the retinoid receptors critical for vision, sensory perception, language processing and attention. Autism spectrum disorders have increased from 1 in 10 000 in 1978 to 1 in 300 in some US communities in 1999. Recent evidence indicates that autism is a disorder of the nervous system and the immune system, affecting multiple metabolic pathways.
