Contact Beds For Wastewater Treatment Filtration

In this type of wastewater filtration, the sewage applied on the contact material is allowed to stand undisturbed for some time before, being emptied and an interval is allowed before recharging the contact beds. During the ‘contact period’, when the filter is standing full, the fine suspended particles of sewage are deposited on the contact material and worked over by the anaerobic organisms. During the ’empty period’ that follows next, the deposited matter is oxidized by the aerobic bacteria. It is then washed off the contact material and carried out with the sludge effluent on the next emptying of the tank.

Contact beds are watertight tanks with masonry walls and very much similar in construction to an intermittent sand filter. The contact material is made of broken stone called ballast and is of 2.5 – 7.5 cm gauge. The tank is filled with the sewage over a period of an hour; allowed to stand full over a period of two hours, then emptied through underdrains. This process takes another hour. The tank is now left empty for 3 to 4 hours before admitting the next charge. (Thus with a total working period in a shift of 8 hours, the contact bed can be worked in three shifts daily). The organic loading in this case is about the same i.e., 1.1 million liters per hectare per day.

The contact beds method is now only of historical interest and not commonly used. This is mainly because of the loss of efficiency brought about by the exclusion of air when the tank is standing full. For an efficient biological action, it is imperative that the aeration should be through the mass of sewage. It has therefore, been superseded by more efficient biological wastewater treatment process, as in the case of trickling filter wastewater treatment method and activated sludge plants. However, the contact beds have some merit when compared to the trickling filters as:

(i) Lesser operating head required

(ii) Freedom from filter (psychoda) flies

(iii) Lesser nuisance due to odor

The Difference Between Home and Commercial Tanning Beds

Commercial tanning beds and ones designed for personal use are each specifically created for unique purposes. Commercial items need to be able to stand up to the wear and tear of constant use while maximizing the profits of salons. Home units are meant to be affordable and to fit into the size and power requirements of standard homes. When looking for the machine that will give you that golden tan or when starting your own salon, you want to choose wisely.

One noticeable difference between home and commercial tanning beds is the cost of these units. Home models are designed to be effective, yet inexpensive enough to be affordable for individuals. Commercial models are made heavier, bigger, faster, and brighter to suit their purpose. They can easily see more than 25 uses in a day, five or more days a week. Home style machines simply won’t stand up to this kind of use. As a result, salon equipment have a higher price tag.

Commercial style tan equipment is created to grab the attention of customers. Extra lighting on the lid and handle, chic designs and finishes, and added luxuries such as music are all added with the client in mind. These machines are generally larger to give salon customers added space and comfort. Larger doors and comfortable designs mean these units are often easier for client to get in and out of. High-end models also offer you the option of having on-board diagnostics so that repairs and adjustments can be made quickly and easily.

Home tan equipment generally only have around 16 lamps inside to help individuals get a tan and use 110v power. They work well, but they require longer treatments to get the same results as a salon tan. In a salon setting, having customers spend more time in the equipment and this means getting less customers in per day and lost customers because of the additional time required. Commercial tanning beds generally use 220v and have 40 or more lamps to increase the heat and effectiveness. With these sessions running around eight minutes, salon owners can handle more clients and maximize profits.

When it comes to commercial tanning beds, the extras make all the difference. Some styles allow the client to direct extra energy to areas that require additional darkening. LED light technology has also been introduced into commercial models. They have a separate area for the face that uses this new technology to treat skin conditions such as dull skin, wrinkles, acne, and discolorations. Climate control is another feature popular on salon systems that allows the customer to stay cool while they tan.

Home and commercial tanning beds are both great options for getting a good tan, but when you have your own salon, they need to be profitable. Selecting the sturdier built salon beds for your business will save you a significant amount of money because they will last longer and have less down time. The special design these systems have will keep customers comfortable while they receive a fast, long lasting tan. This will help you gain additional steady customers and increase your profits to give you a successful salon.

Medical Care in Barbados

While most people visit Barbados for a relaxing holiday in the sun, the realities of life often come into play when medical assistance is needed. This was in the international spotlight recently when emergency medical assistance was required of the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair and his wife Cherie’s son Euan.

It is important to have a plan in case of a medical emergency during your stay in Barbados. Ambulances can often take up to one hour to reach your location, especially if you are on the busy West Coast.

Barbados is fortunate to have highly skilled medical personnel but those practitioners often do not have access to state of the art equipment. With few exceptions, the medical expertise and bedside manner of Barbados’ physicians is on a World class level. It is highly recommended for those visiting Barbados to be proactive in selecting a course of action should the need arise.

What are your choices?

The Government owned Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) is Barbados’ only full service hospital, with intensive care facilities, located just outside of the capital Bridgetown. It also has a reciprocal arrangement for British nationals on the National Health Service (NHS) scheme, where you would be treated and cared for in a Public Ward. Be advised that QEH is often crowded and the wait can be long and sometimes frustrating if your medical needs are not deemed to be of immediate attention. Telephone 436-6450 or 511 for emergency dispatch.

FMH Emergency Medical Clinic is a private accident and emergency medical centre. Located in Belleville, St Michael, this facility offers X-ray, MRI and care for serious but not life threatening injuries. FMH is open from 8 a.m. until 11:30 p.m. and will handle most emergencies or refer patients to the QEH as needed. Telephone 228-6120.

BayView Hospital, a privately owned and operated facility, with seven private rooms and four four-bed semi-private rooms, has been operational since 1989. Situated on the outskirts of Bridgetown and within close proximity of many leading hotels, BayView Hospital offers private non-emergency medical care in a variety of fields including cardiology, dentistry, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, plastic surgery and urology. However, you must be admitted under the specific care of a physician who holds admitting privileges at this hospital. Please call 436 5446, or visit their website for more information.

A new state of the art, privately owned facility has opened its doors on the West Coast – Sandy Crest Medical Centre in Sunset Crest, St James. This ultra-modern complex offers 24 hour comprehensive emergency and non-emergency care service, x-ray, ultra-sounds, CT technology (by the end of the year), access to an ambulance service, 24-hour pharmacy access, as well as an asthma bay. This emergency clinic has employed the services of five of the island’s leading emergency room practitioners, one for every shift. Please call 419-4911, or visit their web site (under construction) for more information.

The island has two private ambulance services, Island Care Ambulance (246) 435 9425, and Get Help Ambulance Service (246) 438 4357, and the QEH Ambulance Service (246) 436 6450 or 511, all of which are located in the Bridgetown area. However, there is a QEH Ambulance service out of the Arch Hall Fire Station in St Thomas, to service the West/North coast of the island. In extreme cases, patients will be air-ambulanced to either Canada or the USA.

Muscle Pain Remedies

Back muscle pain is the most common reason people call out from work. Most of population will experience back pain at some point in their lives and be searching for back pain relief. Do you know how to cure back pain?

A sore back can be caused by muscular dysfunction, but it can also be caused by a slipped or ruptured disc, spinal arthritis or a pinched nerve. The first step in curing your back pain is determining what caused it. B

The best treatment protocol is to never allow the muscle pain to start but with chronic pain patients it’s rare for any patient to have effective intervention prior to the muscle pain starting. Muscle pain is generally a secondary pain originating due to guarding, shielding, and posturing due to original pain sourcing.

There are also some homes remedies to relieve muscle pain. These include treatments like putting ice packs, engaging in physical aides such as wrist, wraps or back braces that tend to minimize muscle strain via helping to hold joints and bones in correct positions.

There are various reasons for a muscle pain spasm to occur. But when it does occur it needs to be dealt with quickly as the pain can be unbearable. Use of rest, ice, heat, massage, muscle relaxers or anti-inflammatories can be very effective. Medical advice should always be sought before beginning any course of treatment to ensure there are no underlying factors causing the pain.

There are a few things you should consider when it comes to causes of your lower back muscle pain. The first of which is pretty obvious, but often overlooked – your core. A strong healthy core or the deep abdominal muscles in the stomach region are the biggest supporters of the back.

Relief begins with prevention. Your actions greatly determine how much pain you will experience. This pain can manifest itself as cramps, stiffness, and spasms. It is all part of the same condition in which your muscles aren’t functioning properly.

There are many causes of joint pains making you restless and bothersome. Joint pain is not the disease itself but the symptom of mild to serious disease. Fever can be the cause of generalized joint pains. It can be caused due to sprain or ligament injury, cartilage tearing, dislocations and sports injuries such as tennis elbow and swimmers shoulder in the case of injuries with swelling and redness around the injured part.

Lower back muscle pain is not a pleasant feeling. You have to deal with the aches and the shooting pains, which can often be quite an experience. It’s also important to note that if you have other symptoms or a certain type of muscle pain, such as that which is located on one side of the back or the other, you will have to rule out other issues or medical conditions before you just chalk it up to muscle pain and leave it at that.

This type of pain occurs when the muscle is overstretched or torn. In this condition, the actual muscle fibers are damaged. Muscle fibers are related with a chain of muscle cells which are grouped together to form a muscle. Usually these chains are tightly grouped together. In the condition of back muscle strain the links of the muscle fiber are separated or it may be broken which results into the damage of minor tissue.

Implications of back muscle pains can be severe at times if they are left untreated or the root of the problem is not cured. Like people working in an environment where they make repetitive motions or exert continuous pressure on any particular part may become victim of muscle imbalance and may face severe muscular pains in future.

Herbal Remedies Vs Synthetic Drugs – Which Is Better?

It is difficult to bring this longstanding debate to an end. Before, when science has not yet come to the level of producing medicines after medicines, most people use what was readily available to cure their sicknesses. People before then discovered various properties (some of which are still being studied until now) that are present in the herbs they planted in their own backyards. They found out that aside from giving them food, plants also have medicinal value which were effective in treating their illnesses.

Then, science got the better of the world and gave it wonders using drugs that are made by man. These are also effective, even more effective than the traditional herbs they used before. More and more people trusted these medicines. However, it doesn’t mean that none of them continued to use the herbs. In fact, it is amazing to note that at present time, where almost everything has become modern and high-tech, there are still many people who use herbal remedies.

The purpose of this article is to weigh which among the two – herbal remedies and chemical drugs – are more effective. Which do you think?

In terms of effectiveness

Herbal remedies: In terms of effectiveness, I think it must be safe to say that yes, herbal remedies are really effective. Why else would the society continue using them even after so many thousands of years? Even doctors recommend some herbal remedies for sicknesses. What is also amazing about herbal remedies is that a single plant can be used to treat so many different diseases, unlike synthetic drugs.

However, when you take an herbal remedy for your sickness, you have to be patient to see the results. Because most herbal remedies are consumed fresh, they are not incorporated with chemicals that hasten the results.

Synthetic drugs: None could also contest the effectiveness of synthetic drugs, which many pharmaceutical companies improve and improve over time. Some people would say that they are not as effective as herbs because they are made with plant extracts, but what makes them more effective is that the compounds needed to cure a certain ailment is already separated from the other components of the plant, which helps it target the disease faster.

Synthetic drugs, aside from plant extracts, are also made with chemicals that hasten the healing process of the body.

In terms of safety

Herbal remedies: Herbal remedies are made with all natural ingredients so you are assured that there is less risk of ever encountering something harmful to the body. Also, most herbal remedies do not have side effects to the body because they are not too strong. In fact, there is less restriction with the kind of herbal medicines safe for children as compared to synthetic drugs.

There is also very little chance that an herbal remedy would trigger allergic attacks on the patient. Then again, it is better to consult the doctor before taking anything to avoid herbs that are poisonous and potentially fatal.

Synthetic drugs: Most synthetic drugs come with warnings on their labels regarding over dosage. This is because some chemicals used in making these drugs are too strong for the body to take. Even the innocent cough syrup becomes fatal once taken without medical supervision. Synthetic drugs are also not very safe for pregnant women to take.

Over dosage of some synthetic drugs may likely cause drug addiction and even organ failure. Failing to stop taking these medicines may eventually lead to death.

In terms of availability

Herbal remedies: It is said that herbal remedies were used before because they were readily available in almost all areas. Most herbal remedies can be found just outside our houses and we only need our kitchen to prepare them for medication. However, in today’s age, not many houses have the privilege of growing their own medicinal plants. Then again, using these herbal remedies is made possible by companies who sell herbs in the form of pills and the like in health stores.

Synthetic drugs: Common synthetic drugs can be bought almost anywhere, in the pharmacy and in the drugstore. You can go to any clinic and you will surely find a medicine for your headache. However, some drugs especially those that are used to treat more serious diseases can be more difficult to find. Sometimes only one hospital in the area has them and sometimes you have to go straight to the pharmaceutical company that manufactures them.

What Are The Benefits Of Online Medical Stores?

Many people who require medicinal drugs have conditions which make it difficult for them to get to a high street pharmacy to collect their medication. Online medical stores are a great way to purchase medicine if you have difficulty getting to a pharmacy and need to buy medicines frequently. Other than being easier to access, online stores can save you time, money and potential embarrassment, whilst helping you to keep track of your prescriptions.

Online pharmacies can help you to manage you medication via special created systems. Many online pharmacies have special systems set up to help you take control of your repeat prescriptions. You simply send them your prescription slips and they will set up a system to post you a new batch of medicine when your old batch is due to run out. They may even email you a reminder, or contact you to check whether you still want or need the medication, every time your prescription is due. This can help to reduce unnecessary and costly wastage of prescription medication. These systems can be very helpful for organising your medication if you have to take a lot of different drugs which all run out at different times of the month.

Online medical stores are also a great way to avoid embarrassment. Some people may feel upset or embarrassed about the condition which they are suffering from, and it can be an unpleasant and stressful experience for them to have to visit a local pharmacy to pick up their medication. It is not uncommon for people to travel to pharmacies that are a great distance from their house in order to avoid seeing someone they know whilst they are buying medication that they are embarrassed about having to take. If you choose to use an online medical store, you can have medication delivered directly to your door without even having to look the pharmacist in the eye! It may even be possible to chat to an online pharmacist in a private forum, which may help you feel more comfortable than if you have to talk to a pharmacist in person.

The savings that online medical stores make from ordering their products in bulk from the pharmaceutical companies are passed directly on to consumers. Although there may be a small charge for home delivery, this is often waived on orders over a certain amount of dollars, or on repeated prescriptions. Even if you still have to pay a minimal fee, this may be inconsequential when you consider the amount of money that you may have spent on gas to drive to the nearest “local” drugstore. Thanks to the potential to stock a much larger range of products, it is highly possible that an online store will be able to source the supplies that you need far more quickly than a high street pharmacy would be able to. Many stores even offer a same day or next day deliver services if customers are willing to pay a small premium. This can save you from having to make two trips to a high street drugs store.

Organic Vitamins & Natural Supplements Vs Synthetic Vitamins & Chemically Engineered Supplements

Researchers have shown an increase of multi-vitamins being deposited into port-a-potties as of late. If this is the case, are your really getting the nutrients that your multi-vitamin says you are getting? Do not be fooled or scammed by the people who claim things that your vitamins give you! Test your vitamins out yourself, and see if you are really getting the nutrients you pay for.

Here is a simple test you can do to see if you are getting the nutrients you pay for:

First off; you’ll need a glass of water and a normal dosage of your vitamins.

Put your vitamins into the glass of water and let it sit for 10 or so minutes. What we are doing is seeing if your vitamin actually breaks down so your body can use the nutrients. After 10 minutes passes you will either find that your vitamin is still sitting is the glass unaltered or you will see that your vitamin is smaller and the water is a colored differently. If your vitamin is unaltered then you are among the millions who have not been getting the nutrients you pay for. If your vitamin is smaller and the water is colored differently, then you are among the few who are actually getting nutrients. If you don’t think 10 minutes is enough time to break down your vitamins, then wait half an hour to an hour- you will see there are no difference in results.

Why is your vitamin not breaking down?   To spare going completely technical and scientific, I’ll break it down into easy terms. Basically, your vitamins are synthetically and chemically made. They are made to sell, not to break down. This is why people who clean port-a-potties have been finding several million tablets all the same across the United States. People are passing the vitamins through their systems unaltered. Our bodies are not able to break the vitamins down, so we just pass them through. What your body needs is something natural that will break down so you can absorb the nutrients.

There are several all natural vitamins on the market, but ranked top above them all is nutrilite. Nutrilite is actually what NASA astronauts use, Olympic athletes, the Orlando Magic basketball team and several other top performing professionals. The manufacturer of Nutrilite’s top selling multivitamin Double X take pride in their all organic mega multivitamin, by not using any machines to till the grounds, not using any pesticides to kill insects and not allowing any aircraft of any sort to fly over the fields the vitamins are grown in. The ground Double X is grown in is tilled by earthworms, maintained by lady-bugs (which eat the insects) and is kept free of rodents destroying the crops by birds and hawks. This may sound absurd, but there is a reason that NASA requires their people to take theses vitamins and not some other brand.   When compared to other vitamins, Double X completely stands and leaves no room for judgment. Asafa Powell (the world’s fastest 100 yard dasher) improved his time by changing only one aspect of his life- the vitamin he took. Before using Double X, Asafa’s time was not improving- No longer than one week of using Double X, Asafa’s time improved, and later he was able to claim the world record for the 100 yard dash. When asked what improved his time, his answer was Double X by Nutrilite.

Now don’t blow what I am saying out of proportion, Double X is not the miracle vitamin that will fix all of your health problems and solve the world’s unanswered questions, but when it come to giving your body what needs, it excels! If you put Double X through the water challenge and look at the ingredients, you will see why Double X is the number one choice of top performing professionals all around the world!

The Pros and Cons of Office Automation

By definition, office automation is the use of technology in order to create, store and manipulate information within an organization. With that said, you can expect the transfer of information from one department to the other to be more accurate compared to having a human handler. If used in areas where information is extremely important, this system can prove to be very helpful. An example of a critical area for accurate information transfer would be a medical clinic.

In any medical clinic, it is important that only right information be recorded since patient records are unique to a specific person. If the record of one patient is misinterpreted to be that of another patient’s then the wrong medication might be given; thereby worsening an existing medical condition.

From a psychological point of view, patients come to a clinic because they do not feel so well. Hence, they may get cranky and easily irritated. It is important, then, for all staff to be highly efficient in order to provide the best healthcare service to all walk-in and calling patients. A team of highly trained professionals may do the job well but the consistency can be questioned especially when they are placed under great stress. So to resolve this small setback, office automation was introduced.

What Can Office automation Do in a Medical Clinic?

In a medical clinic, automation helps realize the right patient expectations. When chosen correctly, the system used could still extend the same warmth as a human receptionist thereby encouraging more loyal customers. Other benefits of office automation may include, but not limited to:

• Clinic personnel can keep track of outstanding balances that need to be paid and/or collected.

• The automation can set up alarms to remind staff of patients that need to be seen by the doctor on a specific day.

• Your medical staff will not need to manually file paperwork so they will have more time to dedicate to providing patient with the best services possible.

• If you have a huge clinic, the simultaneous distribution of records will allow all practitioners to accept patients at the same time.

• Since patients will be allowed to set their own appointments, they can personalize the experience and therefore be more satisfied of your clinic services.

There are a number of other things that the right software can do. But there should be some things that you need to consider before jumping right in and joining the growing number of automated medical clinics.

First of all, the implementation of an electronic system is something that cannot be done in just a single day. Yes, the system could be in place but your staff still needs to be trained on how to use it and how to interpret the data that has been electronically put in.

Second, it is a system so there are chances for bugs and breakdowns. This is a fact that you must consider prior to choosing a software provider. Choose a provider that provides 24/7 technical support as well as free upgrades and maintenance. Note that only the best in the industry can provide you with these services without affecting your clinic’s operations.

All in all, office automation can be the best thing that could happen to your medical practice.

Phlegm, Dampness and Chinese Medicine

Internal Dampness & Phlegm

Dampness and phlegm are accumulations that occur in the body that may make us feel ‘phlegmy’ or just heavy and tired. When our diet is out of sync with our body, our mind is working overtime, or when the weather is very damp and humid, we tend to become stagnant with damp and phlegm.

Dampness is generally considered a thicker/heavier viscosity than phlegm, however may be less obvious in physical signs. Dampness is sensed in the heaviness of the body and fogginess of thinking, and can be seen in the tongue coat.

Phlegm is thinner and manifests in a runny nose or wet type of cough.

Symptoms of Dampness & Phlegm

· Foggy head

· Poor memory

· Difficulty waking up in the morning

· Low energy, especially after eating

· Loose Stool

· Poor concentration

· Leucorrhoea

· Wet-pustulent skin conditions

Signs of Dampness & Phlegm

· Swollen tongue with teeth marks

· White coating on tongue

· Runny nose, especially after greasy/dairy food

· Slippery pulse

One of the signs of dampness is a thick tongue coating and swelling of the tongue body. Sometimes the coating of the tongue is very thick and white, especially in people that consume a lot of dairy such as yoghurt and milk. These people often also scrape the coating of their tongue as it is so thick! This doesn’t treat the root of the damp problem, just removes one of the indicators.

Damp and phlegm accumulate for a few different reasons. We can initially break the causes down into 2 categories: Internal and External routes.

Internally damp/phlegm may accumulate due to:

1. Overthinking/stress leading to a deficiency of the spleen qi (digestive energy) which can’t cope with all the damp foods being ingested, thus leading to a sluggish digestion.

2. Poor diet. Too much dairy, greasy, oily, fatty, sweet, cold, raw and rich natured foods.

Externally damp/phlegm may accumulate due to:

1. Humid environment. Tropical weather. Air-conditioner blasting on you during a hot day for long periods of time.

2. The two weeks between each season change, and especially the end of summer which is considered the ‘late summer’ or ‘damp’ time of the year when we expect dampness to accumulate.

Chinese medicine is based on the 5 element theory. Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood.

Each element relates to a season, organ, emotion and function etc. Dampness relates most closely to earth. The earth element relates to late summer, and the organs of the spleen and stomach.

The job of the spleen and stomach is to convert food and water to energy and the rest to waste. However, sometimes when this system is run-down and can’t convert things properly, due to a rich diet for example, there is an excess residue left over that can’t be disposed of efficiently called dampness. Chinese medicine also states that when the dampness over flows from the earth element, it is contained in the metal element; this being the lungs and large intestine. This can explain why sometimes we eat greasy fish and chips or a milk shake and get a runny nose, cough or diarrhea.

Dampness is heavy and likes to drain down and out. Sometimes it can’t do this as it gets blocked and gluggy. There are a few ways we get rid of damp. First we want to reduce the foods that are adding to the problem. Then we want to use herbs and acupuncture to either open the pores of the skin to disperse through sweat, purge through the stool or drain through urination. Then we will strengthen the digestion using a bland diet, exercise, herbs and acupuncture.

Matter and Energy

A good way to explain Chinese medicine and what we call ‘digestive fire’ is through basic physics principles.

Matter and energy. The two fundamental aspects of nature are fire and water. We can refer to these 2 elements as matter (water) and energy (fire). Everything is a form of matter and energy, matter being a more condensed form with less vibration and energy as a more dispersed and insubstantial form that has highly vibrational electrons and protons.

This said, the two are interchangeable; life and nature are always moving and changing. We are made up of matter and we are driven by passion, emotion, will and love, in this case we can say this is the ‘energy’ or fire that is life. Thus, we are made up of matter, driven by energy. But what fuels this energy? Food, air and water. So we have life, or this ‘inner fire’, and we want to add fuel or wood. What kind of wood would we add to a campfire?

What burdens the digestive fire?

When we want to make a good fire, we need good, light and dry wood; like kindling. We notice when we put green sticks on the fire it smokes and dulls the fire. Likewise, if we put a large log of wet wood on the fire, we’re likely to extinguish it totally.

The spleen and stomach like dry, light food. Thus heavy, oily, greasy, raw and dense foods are not the kind of thing to strengthen an already weak digestion. It is like throwing a big heavy wet log on a small fire. Goodbye fire!

We need to start with easily digestible grains and foods that are cooked well and not overly processed. This is our kindling.

Foods to reduce dampness & return digestive fire

Cooked whole grains: Rice, Oats, Barley, Rye, Millet, Quinoa, Pearl Barley, Buckwheat, Amaranth, Corn

Veggies: Beans (if you can tolerate from the gas), celery, pumpkin, turnip, alfalfa, leafy greens

Meat/Protein: Small amounts of well cooked (even slow cooked/stewed) are good and damp draining. Beef, Lamb, Chicken.

Spices/Herbs: Ginger is great to warm the digestive fire, especially in congee. Cardamom, cinnamon, fennel, paprika, cumin and pepper are all warming to the digestion.

Foods to avoid that increase dampness & reduce digestive fire

Basically, too much raw, cold, sweet, oily or mucous-forming foods.

Too many raw fruits, vegetable, sprouts, juices, cold food from the fridge, salad, sushi in excess.

Late night eating

Over eating

Not chewing properly

Processed foods such as pastries, pork, duck, salads, wheat grass, avocados, bananas, tofu, soy milk (soy is 50% fats and oils), eggs, chocolate, ice cream, smoothies, iced water, lassies, dairy.

A raw food or salad diet sounds great and cleansing but may not be beneficial for everyone. A person who is very hot, red faced with a strong constitution will benefit a lot, however a skinny, pale, tired person will become worse. This is all due to their condition, digestive fire, and diet.

Further improving digestion and reducing excess weight

When the digestive fire is reduced and we put in more of the wrong foods, we get a left over residue. This is what we call dampness. This dampness is energy that has become more substantial, matter. This left over matter may be deposited as fat or turn into more solid matter such as cysts.

The way to reduce this occurring is:

Reducing damp accumulating foods

Restoring digestive fire

Become active and exercise daily

Clearing your mind with meditation and relaxation breathing

New Generation Cervical Cap Adds Convenience and Intimacy to Assisted Conception at Home

Technologies of all kinds have advanced dramatically since propeller planes were common, phones had cords and pop music came on vinyl records. Improvements also have brought assisted conception into a new era of convenience, flexibility and efficiency.

Just as in many other fields, the principles of assisted reproductive technology remain unchanged – while new materials and methods simplify the steps. That makes a huge difference for medical providers and prospective parents.

Modern technology helps couples often overcome common fertility challenges as partners in the privacy of their bedrooms rather than as patients in a medical office. The approach – a cervical cap to help sperm reach an egg – is decades-old. What’s new, thanks to a lightweight silicone cap, is a do-it-yourself technique that lets couples proceed naturally and with dignity.

Reproduction pioneers of the 20th century would be amazed by how much has changed, though they’d recognize a process that adapts their path-breaking work.

As early as Sept. 26, 1938, Time magazine reported on a cervical insemination procedure “performed when the couple cannot afford the preferred intrauterine insemination treatment”:

“The patient lies on the examination table; a doctor or nurse inserts a speculum into the vagina; the semen sample is then placed into the cervix with a plastic catheter. Sometimes a sponge or cap is placed into the vagina before removing the speculum to keep the sperm near the cervix, and can be taken out about six hours later. Success rates for the intracervical insemination treatment are in the region of 5 – 10% per treatment cycle.”

A dozen years later, Dr. M. J. Whitelaw published research describing how pregnancy was achieved for couples “whose marriages were inexplicably sterile, using a plastic cervical cap filled with the husband’s semen applied to the cervix for 24 hours.” His 1950 report appeared in the first volume of Fertility and Sterility, a journal created for doctors in that emerging specialty.

Awkard, Uncomfortable Origins

While Dr. Whitelaw’s day-long procedure used a rigid plastic cap, other gynecologists of the time inserted a heavier version made of surgical steel. After husbands produced semen at the medical office, their wives had to recline with hips elevated for four to six hours before going home.

In the November 1985 issue of the Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Nursing, two nurses described that decade’s first-stage technology for helping couples conceive:

“The most common method of artificial insemination is to draw the semen into a syringe attached to a thin plastic tube and to insert the semen into the upper vaginal/cervical area. An alternate method is to place a plastic cup over the cervix and introduce the semen around the cervix through a plastic tube attached to the cup…. Immediately after the insemination, the woman lies on the examining table with a pillow under her hips.”

The laborious, time-consuming efforts often failed. A 1983 medical textbook, “Clinical Gynecologic Endocrinology and Infertility,” reports pregnancy rates of 18 to 20 percent from vaginal, cervical and even uterine insemination approaches. The two nurses’ 1985 article also reflected the long odds:

“Individuals and couples need to know that their efforts at artificial insemination of the husband’s/partner’s sperm may take many months and the prognosis for conception is often poor.”

Encouraging Success Rates

In the current century, family practice physicians and gynecologists tell couples that holding a semen-filled cap against the cervical mucus greatly increases chances that sperm will swim into the uterus for fertilization – the basic idea described in Time magazine before World War II. The path-shortening technique addresses problems caused by a tilted cervix, poor cervical mucus, low sperm motility or production, an unfavorable vaginal environment or abnormal penis opening.

In contrast to the decades when steel, rubber or hard plastic cervical caps were the only choices, new-generation models are soft and don’t need custom fitting by a physician because side flanges adjust to varied cervical dimensions. Cervical fluid holds the cap in place, just as capillary action keeps contact lenses from slipping. Users resume normal activities, including exercise, at any time and then easily remove the cap after six to eight hours via an attached loop. The trial of hips held high to get pregnant is over forever.

After European use and American clinical trails, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2000 approved the Oves Conception Cap for use here. And in 2007, it cleared prescription sales of a Conception Kit with a three-month supply of the same thimble-size cap, made of implant-grade silicone. Couples also get sperm collectors, ovulation predictors, conception timing wheels and other support materials.

Medical Studies Confirm Effectiveness

In addition to gaining easy, lower-cost access to a lightweight cervical cap for home use as a first step on the assisted reproductive technology continuum, couples can be encouraged by pregnancy success rates that are far different than in cap insemination’s early era.

Forty-four percent of Oves cap users become pregnant, according to a Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine study published in May 1986 in the Journal of Reproductive Medicine. Among women with secondary infertility after at least one successful pregnancy, the success rate rises to 67 percent, according to a 1983 report by four researchers at Detroit Medical Center and Wayne State University, published in Fertility and Sterility. They also found a 43-percent pregnancy rate among women with primary infertility.

Along with solid reasons for optimism, couples begin assisted conception efforts with intimacy and dignity — keeping romance as part of starting or expanding a family.

How to Choose an E String For the Violin

Deciding which E string to use on the violin is a very individual choice. There are numerous E strings on the market and opinions will vary from player to player. This article will look at several popular brands and their characteristics.

There are many different types of E strings. They include plain steel, wound, gold plated, silvery steel, multilayer tin plated steel, chrome steel and plain gut.

Plain steel E strings are by far the most popular and preferred strings. They tend to give the truest sound with the most brilliant and clear overtones. A popular string currently is the Pirastro Wondertone Gold. It gives a clean and clear sound with even projection. The light or weich gauge Wondertone can also minimize wolf tones on the E string. If you are looking for a string with a little more color, the Jargar is an excellent choice. It adds more warmth to the sound and is popular amongst many violinists. Another great choices is the Westminster. The 27 1/2 gauge E is a high tension string and, on some instruments, it will open up the sound on all four strings. The Lenzner Goldbrokat has been used by violinists for many years. It is comparable to the Wondertone Gold E string and gives a clean and clear sound. However, Lenzners do not tend to last as long as Wondertones. Other good choices for a steel E include Corelli, Thomastik Dominant #129, Kaplan Golden Spiral, Prim, D’addario, Larsen and Hill, in addition to the many plain steel E strings by Pirastro.

The new generation steel E strings are plated with various alloys including silver, tin and chrome. Silvery steel strings are comparable to plain steel and can give a little more focus to the sound — but at the cost of warmth. Pirastro manufactures these strings and they are sold as Evah Pirazzi, Wondertone Solo, and Passione. The tin plated E strings tend to have a more strident sound. Thomastik Vision uses tin plating. An excellent choice is the Pirastro No. 1 Universal E, which is chrome plated. This is a fantastic alternative to plain steel E strings, which can whistle. It retains the brilliance and clarity of plain steel — with an easy response — while eliminating the annoying whistle. This string is very good for violinists who suffer from hand perspiration.

Wound strings have been around for years. The two most popular wound strings are the Pirastro Eudoxa and the Thomastik Dominant #130. Both of these have a warm and rich sound, but lack the brilliance and clarity on harmonics and overtones. They tend to wear faster as the outer winding breaks down with use and perspiration — thus leading to more frequent string changing. Hence, they are a poor choice for violinists with sweaty hands. Another popular wound E is the Kaplan Solutions, which is designed for violins that suffer from a whistling E. On many violins, they seem to make the sound seem somewhat dull.

Plain gut E strings are primarily used by baroque violin players. Since they lack an outer protective wrapping, they wear very quickly. They have a thin sound and generally sound nicer when the violin is tuned below A440. The Pirastro Chorda is the most popular of these. Gut strings are affected by temperature and humidity and require frequent tuning. As an organic product, they have a shelf life and require frequent changing.

Of the four strings on a violin, the E string is the least expensive. Thus, it is often possible to experiment with several options to find the one that best suits both your tastes and your instrument.

From Street Dogs to Tiger Hounds

The pitch black darkness of the night was broken by the glow of lanterns, It appeared that someone was walking along the embankment. The faint rustling of the receding waters from the canal was the only audible sound. People of the village had locked their doors right after sundown, no one dares to venture out at night especially since the man-eater has been up and about. Even if people do need to go out, the embankment is taboo as it lies just beside the canal, separating the village from the forest. A 50ft gap that the Tiger crosses easily every night when it enters the village.

As the light approaches some figures become visible, some men with sticks and you can barely make out some scrawny looking dogs at their heel. The lead dog suddenly stops and turns towards the forest. As if by clockwork all the other 4 do the same. The handlers immediately stop and hold up the lanterns as if to shed some light into the dark foliage on the opposite bank. The quiet night seems to have fallen ever more silent. The lead dog, Bullet utters a low muffled growl which is picked up by the other canines as well. The whole demeanor of the group changes as you can almost feel that something is in the air – nervous tension, an anticipation of things to come. The dogs seem transfixed on the other bank, looking intently as if to see something in the dark. Sure enough they must’ve picked up on the scent of something.

Suddenly following Bullet’s lead the whole pack breaks out barking. The almost deafening crescendo piercing the death of the night. As if on cue the human handlers started shouting, at the top of their lungs while stomping the ground with their sticks and feet. It was as if, all hell had broken loose. Amidst the deafening sounds the lead handler Shubol, shines his torch on the darkness of opposite bank. After a few sweeps it stops at some Goran bushes. Sure enough two red orbs shine back at the group. It’s a Tiger all right. The striped terror of Chandpai.

At the sight of the Tiger, or more so it’s eyes, the barking and shouting seemed to jump many folds. As if to silence the usurpers a heavy set growl returned from the other side. However neither courageous dogs nor their brave handlers seemed to let up. While Bullet held his ground, Tom and Som, the two brothers strained at the leash, as if lunging to have a go at the mighty beast, on the other side. Bittu and Sheikh, the rear guard were a few steps behind but were no less menacing, in their display.

Slowly the orbs on the other side started to move, disappearing from time to time only to reappear a few yards away. Both tiger hounds and their handlers moved, along the embankment, parallel to the forest. At one point, the Tiger let out a deafening roar as if to silence the group once and for all, you can almost just imagine its surprise, when not only did they not let up, rather they seemed to press on harder.

As suddenly as it appeared, the orbs were gone and slowly but surely you could make out the decline in the intensity of the barking and shouting. After a few minutes it stopped altogether. The dogs appeared relaxed and Som and Sheikh sat down on their haunches. Only the sound of panting and heavy breathing could now be heard. The Tiger was gone. Both dogs and handlers seemed to be relaxed and the only visible signs of the tense moments before, were the sweaty foreheads of the handlers and heavy breathing of the dogs.

The tiger hounds of Chandpai had warded off the troublesome Tiger for the night leaving villagers to sleep in peace. The team of 5 brave handlers and their even braver dogs armed only with sticks, lanterns and flashlights, had stopped a Bengal Tiger that had already earned the reputation of being a “Man eater”, in its tracks and saved the villagers of Chandpai and their livestock for one more night.

This innovative initiative was one of several initiatives taken by Dr. Adam Barlow and Monirul of the “Tiger Response Team” of “The Sunder Bans Tiger Project” in reducing Human, tiger conflict on the villages in the fringes of the largest mangrove forest of the world, The Sunder Bans.

The base of operations was the village of Chandpai, right on the edge of the forest, separated only by a canal. Mariel, an experienced dog trainer from the U.S. was brought in to start the Tiger hound project. After extensive search from among dozens of local village dogs, 5 dogs were chosen, all alpha males. The first barrier was to get the dogs to work with each other, as being Alpha males they were highly dominant and frequent fights broke out. Once the animals were socialized, their actual training began. Both the handlers and dogs received extensive training, first on obedience which w as a hurdle as these dogs had never been trained even on the basics. After they graduated they were shown their first Tiger, a captive animal at a Zoo. Tom and Som, the two brothers had been most impressive and within minutes, the other dogs nervous at first joined in and ultimately the tiger behind bars was visibly nervous. Mariel left after completion of the training, giving leadership of the pack to star dog Bullet and his handler Shubol.

Now the people of Chandpai sleep a lot better because they know that the Tiger hounds and their handlers are out on patrol. The initiative showed just how some scrawny, scuffed up local dogs from a small village on the south of Bangladesh could be trained to stand their ground and ward off a mighty animal as a Tiger. The small but strong line of defense of the helpless people of an impoverished village, against a terror of the night, a man-eating tiger of the Sunder Bans.

*Note: The incident described is a work of fiction based on the Tiger hounds of the Sunder Bans.

Is Your Sunscreen Causing Cancer and Vitamin D Deficiency?

Did you know that even if you live in a warm, tropical, sunny region, you could be vitamin D deficient? This is becoming more and more common as various cancer associations have scared people into thinking that the least bit of sun exposure will cause skin cancer. What they do not tell you is that sunscreens are full of chemicals and toxins, and many now believe that the rise in skin cancer has to do with the rise in sunscreen use versus actual sun exposure .

Granted, there are people who totally put themselves at risk for skin cancer regardless. I am talking about the people who feel the need to bake themselves on the beach for hours like doomed lobsters. This article is for those who have a bit more awareness than that.

So we know why we care about cancer, it is a disease that elicits a lot of fear and visions of looming death. But, why should we care about Vitamin D deficiency ? It is linked to:

  • Depression and neurological disorders
  • Muscle and chronic pain
  • Weakened bones
  • Thyroid disease as well as autoimmune disorders
  • Cancer
  • Insulin resistance

Think you will just go get a vitamin? Think again.

Before you jump on the supplement bandwagon, keep these things in mind.

1. One needs to have a healthy gut in order to properly absorb vitamins. Therefore, if you already have some kind of condition such as thyroid problems, depression and / or anxiety, fatigue, Diabetes, PCOS, or whatever your diagnosis is, you are just spending your money and effort trying to choke down the horse pill.

2. Cholesterol is needed to properly convert Vitamin D from sunlight exposure for body use. If you have high levels of stress, your stress hormones are sucking up all of your cholesterol. If you are obsessed with low cholesterol, and are taking drugs to keep your levels low, you are preventing the availability of cholesterol to do its many jobs. (By the way, cholesterol does not cause heart disease, in case you are worried.)

3. Vitamin D is fat soluble, so if you are still on the low fat, no fat craze, and / or take this with something like water or juice, you are again, wasting your money and efforts.

4. Many popular antacid, steroid, statin, and hormone replacement drugs prevent vitamin D absorption.

5. Most vitamins are full of filler junk anyway, and synthetic forms of vitamin D are just not a substitute for the real thing. If you are eating gummy vitamins, just eat gummy worms instead. They probably taste better.

So what should you do?

Get some sun! Just 10 minutes a day, somewhere between 10:30 am and 2 pm. On un-sunscreened skin.

If you are heading to the beach or going to be exposed for a long time, cover up with protective clothing. I love long sleeve surfing rash guards, as when they are wet, they keep you cool.

Or, if you must wear sunscreen, at least check out the least toxic brands recommended by the Environmental Working Group. Http://

If you live in a dark, cold region, do your best to fill up on sun during the summer months, eat vitamin D rich foods such as oysters, wild salmon, herring and sardines, wild tuna, organic milk, and egg yolks, and If you have to supplement, do your research well and find a reputable brand with the least amount of additives possible.

Finally, start healing your gut if you are having health problems. Healing begins from the inside out! And you need a healthy gut to reap all the vitamin and mineral benefits not just from the sun, but also from the food you eat.
