Ayurvedic Defense Against the MRSA Superbug

Just the other day, a 17 year old boy was brought into my office. He had a swollen jaw. I examined it and recommend the father take the boy to their family MD for antibiotics.

Well, the next day the father came back. The boy was diagnosed with MRSA (aka the antibiotic-resistant Superbug). The father wanted to know what Ayurvedic treatments I could offer.

As you know MRSA (pronounced Mursa in the States) has evolved, mutated and adapted its DNA to be super-resistant to conventional treatments. It can survive a full dose of beta-lactam antibiotics, including penicillin, methicillin, and cephalosporins, according to Medical Microbiology.

How MRSA Probably Came About…

The virus was discovered in 1961 in the UK, two years after we started using the antibiotic methicillin to treat S. aureus and other infectious bacteria. That’s how it got its name, Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus).

Since then this superbug has been on a rampage. MRSA infections in the United States reached 127,000 in 1999 (according to a 2007 report in Emerging Infectious Diseases, a publication of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). And that’s only counting the infections that were treated in hospitals. Of those 127,000 infections, 11,000 people died.

These Figures Suggest That MRSA Is Causing More Deaths than AIDS

By 2005, MRSA was associated with 18,650 hospital stay-related deaths, estimates the October 17, 2007 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Almost all these deaths were from people with weakened immune systems.

MRSA was once only labeled as a hospital acquired (HA-MRSA) infection. Now, however, it’s turning up in schools, gyms and day care centers. It has been promoted to the rank of community acquired (CA-MRSA) infection.

A 17 Year Old High School Student’s Battle With MRSA

Last October, a 17 year old boy named Ashton Bonds from Virginia’s Staunton River high school acquired a MRSA staph infection according to CNN. Ashton went to the Bedford Memorial Hospital on October 4th with a pain in his side. After they ruled out appendicitis they sent him home.

Three days later, he was readmitted. By that time the MRSA infection had spread to his kidneys, liver, lungs and the muscles around his heart.

Antibiotic treatment was useless. The doctors sedated him and put him on ventilator. They were ready to begin surgery to try to drain the infection from his lungs. Very sadly, a blood clot near his heart got to him first.

21 schools in his area were immediately closed down and given a thorough cleaning to prevent the spread of the disease.

Superbugs are Super-Intelligent

As much as antibiotics has saved millions of people since their discovery, stories like this one show that they’re losing its power. You must understand how intelligent bacteria can be. They actually scavenge the dead remains of other bacteria that perished to antibiotic. They can see what killed their brothers and mutate accordingly. Okay, back to that boy and his father who came to my clinic with the swollen jaw. As you can see, it’s no surprise they didn’t want to rely on conventional medical treatment.

Fortunately, there’s still a wealth of remedies available for dealing with MRSA and other skin infections. Of course, they are natural treatments that can’t be patented and sold as a drug. If they can’t be sold as a drug, who can afford to pay the millions of dollars required to get it FDA approved?

Superbugs Versus Supermen

We talk so much about superbugs as if they are more dangerous to us than other bacteria. They are only super-strong when fighting antibiotics. They aren’t necessarily any more of a threat to our immune system. According to Ayurveda, it’s really a matter of how strong your body’s tissues are. Just take note of the news: The people who are dying from MRSA are usually the elderly or those suffering from a weakened immune system.

In fact, in a healthy body, many microbiologist believe bacteria will mutate to become helpful to its host. This may explain why children who grow up with a pet before age one rarely have asthma or other allergies (more on this in a future issue).

The problem lies with your body’s ability to release toxins. If your cells are congested with toxins your immune system cannot operate properly. Infections take place. In Ayurveda we teach that toxemia is the root cause of all disease. Most toxins come from the colon. Antibiotics do nothing to clean out toxic waste from your blood and gut.

Whale Energy Medicine – DNA and the End of Planetary Struggle

Our emotional struggles are simply energy struggles; we use manipulation in our relationships in order to feed ourselves with other people’s energies because we are disconnected from the source, the only place from where we can get unlimited energy supply, never-ending, never lacking; the only place that we need to switch to so that we no longer need to steal, manipulate, connive, extract, demand, control or simply blatantly take energy from others, who by the way, also need their own energy to survive! Hence, they will sooner or later retaliate in a never-ending power struggle, and it is clear that the end of this kind of exchange is the survival of the fittest, just exactly what we see in our world today.

In the words of Sams & Carson in their “Medicine Cards” book, the energy of Whale would explain a lot of what can be done in order to take our own individual destiny in our own hands:

Isn’t this the reason why we live in such a noisy world? Isn’t this the reason why the vast majority of people are not able to sit with themselves in silence? We fear this powerful inner voice that will undoubtedly guide us to take responsibility for our growth and healing. We don’t want to be told that we have to do the work! We rather expect others to do it for us: we want our husbands and wives to make us happy, we want our children to fulfill the dreams that we haven’t been able to achieve ourselves, we want our doctors to give us that magic pill which will heal all our maladies without taking responsibility over our diets and exercise regimes, we want our bosses to give us money without even dipping into our unique and special gifts because we are willing to plod along until our retirement time, when we are hoping to be able to start enjoying life (at the age of 65!), we want products of many kinds to do our tasks so that we can focus on enjoying our time (yet we spend it overeating, drinking and smoking as part of our socializing experience) and we expect cosmetics and creams to return to us our lost youth. Isn’t this too much expectation? Yet, we could do all of this, all by ourselves, if we tapped into that inner sound or guidance.

Or, as the medicine of Whale says: “Whale signals a time of finding your origins, or seeing your overall destiny as coded in your DNA and finding the sounds that will release those records”.

But, like everything, when something is not within balance, is out of balance. When something is not within integrity is out of integrity, or in the process of disintegrating. This is why I always say that one must always grow, that staying the same doesn’t exist, that one cannot expect to plod along avoiding change thinking that things may then remain the same. Such concept doesn’t exist. It either grows and discards the outmoded energy, or doesn’t grow and hence, devolves or disintegrates. Harsh words, maybe, but true.

And so when we are not listening to our Whale energy within “We are not following our sonar or homing device”. This means that “On some level, you have forgotten that you hold ALL the answers you need to survive, to grow and to claim the power of your chosen destiny. It may be that you are having to deal with a lot of chatter in your head and cannot get to your personal records”. “The call of the Whale is the lullaby of the tides. Rock yourself gently and float into the world of the sea”. And this is why staying in nature is such a sure cure to emotional turmoil, rebalancing our electro-magnetic fields and cleansing our energetic bodies, promoting healing and… that magic resurfacing of the inner voice.

So we are getting into the heart of the matter, literally! We are now dealing with DNA, with the blueprint of who we are as species and as individuals, the only real pattern that if we can tap into will tell us what is our purpose here and what are our specific gifts to achieve such goal. But in order to do this, we need to clear the chatter in our minds, which is the same as cleansing all the debris lingering within our DNA, all the outmoded lessons converted into physical toxins as a result of our energetic dealings with ourselves and with others during all our lifetimes. A kind of mirror of our Akhasic records written in the stars, a memory and a script of all the thoughts we ever had, all the words we ever spoke, all the feelings we ever felt, all the actions we ever took.

To me bodybuilding is not all about steroids, to me its just about getting bigger naturally and staying healthy.

Understanding Friendship

Before I start I know, as you probably know, that a friendship can be an antidote for loneliness or depression or even boredom. But it should be just more than an antidote for these problems. What are the qualities that lead to a solid friendship?

First of all, friendship must be genuine. In friendships we reveal what we are and who we are capable of becoming. Friendships demand that we reveal ourselves without pretenses or masks, without affection or deception. G.K. Chesterton knowing the risks involved in cultivating a solid friendship, summed it up when he said, “Friends are those with whom our faults are safe.”

Another quality needed for a friendship is that it be gratuitous. It is a free donation or offering of one person to another. Friendship is never marred by jealousy. There must be a certain freedom between the two friends. Otherwise, there could be the problem of possessiveness or even suffocation of the friendship.

3) Number of friends with Opposite Genders: If you have more friends from opposite gender than there is a chance that your friendship with those people will be clean…with any thought of intimacy compare to those who have one or just limited friends from opposite gender.

4) Family Background: If the family of more orthodox, traditional, with very strict value system…then also at times… there are chances that you cannot be JUST friends with a person from opposite gender.

5) Stage of life you are going through: If you are facing lots of rejections, emotional instability, frustration, lots of struggle and if your performance is not appreciated by your bosses and colleagues…then also you try to find that solace, that comfort by intimately getting involved…because their you find acceptance and emotional comfort.

6) Profession you are into and type of organization you are working in: As we have discussed in one of the cases…if it is male or female dominated company or department…there are also people tend to get involved with people of opposite genders.

7) Successful, Happy Married Life and Unsuccessful and Unhappy Married Life: If you don’t have successful and happy married life…you are not getting that time, care, and affection as you want and if you have a friend from opposite gender who is taking care of you, giving you time, affection and emotional support than also there are high chances of developing those intimate relation…much above your “JUST” friendship thought.

So, it is possible to be “JUST” friends with people of opposite gender and it depend on your maturity, mindset and your need at that particular time. We can talk about our thoughts; our feelings but you cannot say the same thing about the person of opposite gender. You never know what your friend is talking about you in his or her group of friends.

As far as my personal experiences goes…I have lot many “Female Friends” from different cities, different countries, from different age groups, married-unmarried-singles and now gender hardly matters to me. We discuss about our experiences, go out for dinner, movie, and picnic and also give comforts…if there are any issues at professional and personal fronts. But, as I said earlier…I can say how I feel, what I think…I cannot say with any surety as what they feel and think.

If the sexual element in a relationship is lost, no friendship is left and the couple moves away from each other in every respect. iSeries Source Debugger – Advanced Debugging Tips

Not too long ago, a friend of mine was having a problem with a program that he had just finished. We were using the source debugger to find out what was causing his problem. We figured out the problem eventually, but in the course of our work, we came across some debugger commands and options that I was previously unaware of. Now I am not going to say that I know everything about the IBM source debugger but I have been using it for a good long while. I was surprised to discover something new, so I thought I’d share what I learned with you.

%INDEX Built-In Function

The %INDEX function is one of the functions that up until recently I was unaware of. It is really handy when you are manipulating multiple-occurrence data structures. It is even more useful when used in conjunction with the _QRNU_DSI_xxxx built-in value (where xxxx = the name of a multi-occurrence data structure). The command EVAL _QRNU_DSI_xxxx will return the current occurrence of a multiple-occurrence data structure. This is often a very useful thing to know during program execution and as far as I know this is the only way to get it. By using the %INDEX function you can also change the current occurrence of a multiple-occurrence data structure. See below.

To find the current occurrence of the data structure without changing it:

Command: EVAL _QRNU_DSI_WorkMultDS1

Result: 1 (or whatever the current occurrence of WorkMultDS1 is)

Result: WorkMultDS1 = %INDEX(12) = 12

After issuing the above command interrogated subfields will reflect the values of the twelfth occurrence of the data structure.

%SUBSTR Built-In Function

This function is really convenient when you are working with large strings. Using the EVAL function by itself will only display only the first 500 characters of a field. As a side note, the easy solution to that problem is to append the type and length to the EVAL function as shown below:

This command will display the first 2000 characters of the variable Long_String_Name in character format:

Command: EVAL Long_String_Name:C 2000

This command will display the first 2000 characters of the variable Long_String_Name in hexadecimal format:

Command: EVAL Long_String_Name:X 2000

The hexadecimal display is important when displaying data that contains packed or binary decimal data. But we are not talking about the EVAL function. The SUBSTR function will do exactly what the name implies; it will display a substring or a portion of a string value. See the examples below.

Assume that StringFldA = ‘Now is the time for all good men…’

Command: EVAL %SUBSTR(StringFldA 12 4)

Result: %SUBSTR(StringFldA 12 4) = ‘time’

Not surprisingly, you can also use the %SUBSTR function to set the value of a specific portion of a string. Sometimes this is a far more helpful way to use this function. An example of this usage is shown below.

Assume that StringFldA = ‘Now is the time for all good men…’

Command: EVAL %SUBSTR(StringFldA 12 4) = ‘blah’

Result: %SUBSTR(StringFldA 12 4) = ‘blah’

To see the complete string use the following command:

Command: EVAL StringFldA

Result: StringFldA = ‘Now is the blah for all good men…’

The %SUBSTR function can also be used to set a conditional breakpoint or watch condition. As an example, the code shown below will stop the execution only when positions 12 through 15 of StringFldA are ‘blah’:

Command: BREAK 100 when %SUBSTR(StringFldA 12 4) = ‘blah’

Or you could watch for those same positions to change by using this watch condition:

Command: WATCH %SUBSTR(StringFldA 12 4)

After issuing the command above, anytime the contents of positions 12 through 15 change, program execution stops and you are notified.

EQUATE function

More and more often I run into field names that are really long. Now don’t get me wrong here, I think this is great. But I don’t type so good so a 25 character field name has a much greater chance of being mis-keyed than an old 6 character one (even if the 25 character one is way more understandable). So if you don’t type well (or just don’t like to type, like me), then use the EQUATE debug function. This function allows you to define an “alias” for a field name, expression, or command. Take the example below.

Command: EQUATE SmName This_is_a_really_long_field_name

You can then find the value of “This_is_a_really_long_field_name” by keying the command shown below:

Command: EVAL SmName

The EQUATE command can also be used to create a macro…sort of. This can be done by assigning an “alias” to a complete debug command.

Command: EQUATE SmCmd EVAL %substr(StringA,5,5)

Now by simply keying SmCmd and pressing Enter, you can display the value of positions 5 through 9 of the StringA variable.

So the next time you start testing a program or chasing a bug, remember these, and you might save yourself some headaches.

Rape – Problems and Solutions

Rape is a social evil that has reached explosive proportions. It has ruined many lives and continues to do so at a frenetic pace. No one is immune, and age is no bar. From infants to senior citizens to corpses, rape has become a diabolic symbol of power in an iniquitous world. In USA, a rape occurs every two minutes; In India, every 54 minutes, and in Pakistan, every three hours. The tragedy is that 80% are perpetrated by fathers, brothers, relatives or friends. Six out of ten occur in the home or in the home of a relative or friend. The story of an Austrian father, who raped his daughter for 24 years, and sired seven children through her, is still fresh in our minds.

Though rape occurs in all social groups, it is more frequent among minority groups with low social status. A molester need not necessarily be a sleazy character. He may be well educated, well groomed and have a high standing in society such as a judge, government official, policeman or priest. Even doctors have been known to rape patients in their clinics. The rapist may be of any age from an old man to a young teenager. The increasing trend of raping minors by force or through allurements is frightening. Children of 14 years or lower, have been known to rape their classmates, and kill them out of fear of being caught.

Reasons for under reporting:

A habitual rapist may molest about 8-10 women before being caught. As conviction rates are only about 2%, many cases go unreported.

o Most women fear the stigma attached to rape, especially when the Law does not convict the rapist. They become secretive and even believe that they are in some way guilty.

o Lack of faith in the judicial system: Many times the court puts the victim on trial, questioning her about her morality, and probing into her sexual history. When a constable in Mumbai raped a 15 year old rag picker the judge proclaimed, “She is a rag picker and of no consequence.”

Because of such perverse reasoning and warped sense of justice, many judges pass it off as an ‘act of passion’ and award minimum sentence.

Also, legal battles are long and tiresome. The onus of proving rape falls on the victim.

o Fear of retaliation by the rapist or his goons.

o Fear of adverse reaction from society, parents, husbands, employers or peers.

o Fear of tarnishing the family image, especially when there are unwed female siblings.

One study showed that 43% of women are ignorant of the law; 23% are too shy to come forward; 12% are afraid of the police; 12% think complaining will not make a difference.

One young girl said, “I blame society for giving men the right to rape and regarding women’s suffering as unimportant. A rapist may get off with a light sentence, but the victim’s sentence is for life.”

What is rape?

It is a form of sexual sadism involving unlawful sexual penetration either by coercion, force, blackmail or under false promises. “I believe that whatever violates the integrity of a woman’s body should be considered rape,” says Brinda Karat, a women’s activist. “Sexual violence apart from being dehumanizing, is an unlawful intrusion of the right to privacy and sanctity of the female,” says Justice A. S. Anand.

Situations under which rape occurs:

– Custodial rape when a woman is in custody for some small offence.

– Child rape is the pastime of paedophiles. 1 in 5 children raped are below 15 years of age. Some don’t even spare infants in cradles.

– Casting couches are routine in the film or modeling industry. When a person is desperate for a job she becomes vulnerable.

– Date rape has been escalating. The assailant is usually known to the victim, and drugs the victim with GHB, Rophynol, Ketamine or some such drug. These drugs are in powder form or liquid and dissolve in any drink. These drugs make the victim physically helpless and incapable of resisting sex, also incapable of recalling the incident. Alcohol enhances the action of the drugs. No trace is found in the blood stream after 72 hours

– Aggravated rape is when a rapist introduces an instrument or foreign body into the victim, to build up his own orgasm.

– Marital rape which may not be recognized by the law.

– Necrophilia: The raping of corpses is common in certain tribes. Sometimes sexual perverts can also indulge in such activity.

Reasons why men rape?

– It gives men a sense of power, and is linked to their identity. Forcing a woman into sexual subjugation validates their manhood. They enjoy it.

– Lust in men who have not disciplined their impulses. Testosterone makes male libido flare out of control.

– Economic causes: In some communities the bride price may be too high. Poverty, low socioeconomic status, unemployment, lack of skills, make men vent their frustration through rape. The victim and rapist may live in the same area. Girls in inner cities have 1 in 70 chances of being raped, whereas in rich areas it may be 1 in 2000.

– In communities with strict codes of behaviour, where no mingling of sexes is allowed, repressed males give expression to their masculinity through rape.

– Antisocial and borderline personalities behave irresponsibly. This is enhanced by drugs and alcohol.

– Misogyny: Men who hate women commit violent crimes against them. Many have aggressive mothers and timid fathers. A mother’s verbal abuse may have given the man a poor self image. As an expression of anger against mother or sisters, he finds a victim who cannot defend herself or is mentally retarded, and rapes her.

– Men with poor self worth are convinced that no woman would voluntarily sleep with them. They are aroused by sexual fantasies and express themselves through rape.

– Revenge: When men are rejected or ignored, they feel insulted enough to use rape as a form of revenge.

– Growing Feminism: Women are breaking down every male bastion. They are becoming economically independent and upwardly mobile. Male bashing is occurring like never before. Assisted reproductive technology and genetic engineering make some men feel purposeless and disempowered. As a result they resort to rape.

– Sex Industry and Pornography incites men to treat women as commodities and humiliate them for their pleasure.

“Rape is nothing more or less than a conscious process of intimidation by which all men keep all women in a state of fear,” says Susan Brown Miller.

– Men have blamed women for flaunting their female attributes through indecent exposure, skimpy costumes and suggestive behaviour. This they say precipitates lust in men. Women refute this because rape occurs in small towns or villages where women dress modestly.

– Rape in war is sanctioned by the highest authorities as a means of demoralizing the social fabric of a nation, by impregnating their women. It is also supposed to relieve aggression and promote bonding among soldiers.

Effects of rape on the victim:

The Rape-Trauma syndrome is akin to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It has two stages. The first is Disorganization due to the shock of rape. Fright, anger, guilt, and shame may follow. Reorganization is the second stage which gradually takes place over a period of 3-4 months. Sometimes it may take much longer. The victim feels vulnerable, timid, and not fully in control of her life. Residual Damage is what rape leaves in its wake. Depression, sexual dysfunction, vaginismus, fear of sexual interaction and inability to adjust socially are common. The person may take to alcohol or drugs to fight off fear and depression. A survivor of rape is nine times more likely to commit suicide. But if the victim gets immediate support and is able to ventilate her grief, fear or rage, the chances of recovery are greater.

Solutions to minimize rape in society:

o Education of the public by raising rape consciousness in society through education and awareness programmes. Men, politicians, police, judiciary and the general public should be sensitized about violence against women. New insights into sex roles are needed. Stereotype gender roles only make men more aggressive and women more vulnerable.

o Education of girls: Strong parental support will give girls a sense of security and belonging. They will have confidence to express their fears and anxieties. Parents should encourage their children to report to them incidents like physical proximity, inappropriate touching even if it is father, brother or relatives. Girls should be made aware of dangers lurking in society. 60% of teenagers have a tendency to act boldly and impulsively.

Women should also be made aware of the laws against rape and molestation. Male judges are too easy on rapists and too hard on victims. Because of such injustice, the law has been brought into disrepute. Trials must be time bound and punishment swift. Rape Crisis Centres should provide counseling and support to rape victims.

o Education of girl children should include specific “do’s” and “don’ts.” They should be told never to let a stranger within arm’s length, and never to accept sweets or toys from strangers; never to lead a stranger to some isolated place he wants to visit; to beware of over-friendliness. Children from unhappy homes are easy targets as they are starved for affection. Even van drivers who ferry children between school and home may take advantage of a friendly child. Teenagers may be lured by people who promise roles in films or in modeling. If attacked, the child should be told to drop on the ground and scream for help.

o Education of parents: The lines of communication between them and their children should always be tension-free. Many parents think that children are too young to be told about rape as it will frighten them unduly. Children must be made aware that there is a small number of wicked people in society.

Parents should also be alerted by sudden withdrawal, loss of appetite, nightmares or refusal to go to school, and investigate into the matter.

Parents should check the sites children visit on the Net and the type of books they read.

A child who is aware of dangers will be more likely to ward off a rapist. Vigilance is the solution.
