Osteopathy As a Top Health Care Career Choice

What is Osteopathic Health Care?

The health profession of Osteopathy (founded in 1874 by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in the USA) is an established internationally recognized manual medicine system of diagnosis and treatment, which lays its main emphasis on the structural and functional integrity of the musculoskeletal system.

Osteopathic health practitioners use a variety of hands-on physical treatments. These include soft tissue techniques, joint mobilization & manipulation, muscle energy treatment and functional (strain and counter strain) techniques. These techniques are normally employed together with exercise, dietary, and occupational advice in an attempt to help patients recover from pain, disease and injury.

There are two types of osteopaths. European style Osteopaths (also known as osteopathic manual practitioners, manual osteopaths, traditional osteopaths & classical osteopaths) do not prescribe medications or perform surgery, while American style osteopaths (also known as osteopathic physicians) perform surgery and prescribe medications as well as using osteopathic techniques in managing a patient’s condition.

Osteopathy as a Career Choice

Osteopathic health care is one of the most complete health care systems in the world. It is a distinctive form of medical practice. The practice of manual osteopathy utilizes all available modern manual medicine techniques to assess injury and diseases of muscles, bones, joints and nerves. It also offers the added benefit of hands-on diagnosis and treatment through a system of therapy known as osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM). Osteopathic manual practitioners understand how all the body’s systems are interconnected and how each one affects the others. They focus special attention on the musculoskeletal system, which reflects and influences the condition of all other body systems.

Osteopathy is the fastest growing health care profession in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Argentina, South Korea, Japan, China, India, Iran & Europe. The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) in a report released in December 2012 and published by the Toronto Star; titled “the Top 25 Occupations in Demand” included manual osteopathy in #13 of the occupations in demand in Canada.

The average salary for a new manual osteopathy graduate who works as an employee in a health or rehab clinic is generally between $30 to $40 per hour in Europe, Australia, Caribbean and North America and $10 to $20 in Asia, Latin America and Africa. Manual osteopaths in private osteopathic practice generally charge between $90 to $140 per hour of treatment in Europe, North America, Australia & Caribbean and $20 to $60 per hour in Asia, Latin America & Africa.

For patients injured in a motor vehicle related accident in Ontario (Canada) all auto insurers cover osteopathic treatments at the rate of $53.66 per hour as per fee guideline set by Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO).

The average income of manual osteopaths in Canada and USA is $90,000 per year. In Australia it is $78,000 and in United Kingdom (UK) it is 58,000 Euro. The average income of American style osteopathic physicians varies greatly as it depends on the speciality they practice. It is $161,000 to $576,000 per year.

There is virtually no unemployment in this health care profession. Almost all European style osteopaths find employment within a few months upon graduation.

European style osteopaths are found worldwide. There are approximately 4500 osteopaths in United Kingdom (UK), 1500 manual osteopaths in Canada, 1000 manual osteopaths in Brazil and 67,000 doctors of osteopathic medicine in the USA, and a few thousands more spread around the world in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Panama, Colombia, China, Iran, India, South Korea, Japan, Greece, South Africa, Singapore, Vietnam, Venezuela, Latvia, St Martin, Barbados, Jamaica, Bermuda, Costa Rica, Mexico, Russia, Ukraine, Argentina, Pakistan, Israel, Austria, Germany, Portugal, Italy, and Netherlands amongst others. Nearly half of them are women.

The number of osteopaths worldwide has increased exponentially in the past few years largely due to National Academy of Osteopathy making the diploma program in osteopathy available to students worldwide through an online method of education.

Where do Osteopaths work?

European style Osteopaths have the option of opening their own manual osteopathy clinics; or to rent rooms in established medical, health or rehab clinics and benefit from cross referrals; or to work as employees in other osteopathic, medical, chiropractic, physiotherapy, athletic therapy, massage or rehab clinics.

Most osteopathic manual practitioners work in private osteopathy clinics, often as sole proprietor, associate or employee. However, the increase in multidisciplinary health care facilities and physical rehabilitation clinics in Canada, USA, Australia & United Kingdom has opened new opportunities for osteopathic manual practitioners to collaborate with other health care professionals (such as family physicians, chiropractors, registered massage therapists, naturopaths, athletic therapists, kinesiologists, podiatrists, chiropodists, occupational therapists, ergonomists, and physiotherapists) and benefit patients with interprofessional care. A small numbers of osteopaths also work in hospitals, nursing homes, health spas, sports teams, insurance companies claims services department, fitness clubs, osteopathic colleges, motor vehicle accident (MVA) assessment centres and other institutions.

Most new graduates start their professional work as employees. Later they establish their own private clinics.

Becoming an Osteopath

To become an osteopath one must graduates from an accredited osteopathic school, college or university. The programs vary in length and diplomas and degrees offered. The diploma programs are generally between 1000 to 2000 hours and the degree programs between 3000 to 4500 hours. The time it takes to graduate depends on the osteopathy program and ranges from 4 months to 4 years.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends 4200 hours (4 years) of osteopathic education for students without previous health education and 1000 hours (1 year) for students with previous health education. However WHO guideline is voluntary and not mandatory. It is not a requirement to follow the WHO guideline. Some osteopathic schools follow the WHO guideline voluntarily.

Osteopathic Care & Treatments

A number of researches have shown patients who have low back pain of mechanical origin are most satisfied with osteopathic treatments.

Dr. Lee Choi, MD, an osteopathy student of National Academy of Osteopathy has completed a research project as his thesis towards the investigative project requirement of course TH 980 of the diploma in manual osteopathy program.

Dr. Choi’s research analysed 100 patients’ response to low back pain treatments performed by manual osteopaths, registered massage therapists, chiropractors, physiotherapists, acupuncturists and physicians.

Patients who received European style osteopathic treatment had the highest rate of satisfaction with their treatments, followed by chiropractic, massage therapy, physiotherapy, acupuncture and medicine.

Over 95% of the patients surveyed who received osteopathic treatments indicated great satisfaction with their treatments, followed by 91% who received chiropractic treatments, 86% by those who received massage therapy, 75% by those who received physiotherapy, 60% by those who received acupuncture and 30% by those who received medical care for their low back pain.

This research confirms result of previous research indicating that patients favor manual osteopathy treatment above all other available treatments for low back pain of mechanical origin and that osteopathy is the number one health care system of choice for them whenever they suffer from low back pain.

World Osteopathy Day

As a result of tireless work of the world famous osteopath, Dr Shahin Pourgol, president of the National University of Medical Sciences & the National Academy of Osteopathy for suggesting a World Osteopathy Day and collaboration between National Academy of Osteopathy, International Osteopathic Association, Canadian Manual Osteopathy Examining Board, and a number of other organizations, manual osteopaths, and osteopathy students, June 22nd has been chosen and named “World Osteopathy Day”.

For over 130 years the health profession of osteopathy has done so much to help human beings have a better quality of life and it deserve a day of its own as recognition of its contribution to human society worldwide.

At 10AM on June 22, 1874 in Baldwin, Kansas (USA), the 46 years old physician, Dr Andrew Taylor Still founded osteopathy. Dr Shahin Pourgol recommended this day in oppose to Dr Still’s date of birth (August 06, 1828) as the World Osteopathy Day and his suggestion was accepted by the majority.

Dr Pourgol is bringing a private member bill to the Canadian parliament to request the government of Canada officially recognize June 22nd as the World Osteopathy Day.

International Osteopathic Association has committed to do the same with parliaments of a number of other countries in Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa.

Don’t Take L-Pyroglutamic Acid Supplements Without Reading This

From time to time each person has the tendency to break down in times of extreme stress. Over time the brain function is affected due to everyday problems that do not seem to end. Because of the stressors in the environment you live in, mental exhaustion happens. Suddenly you lose your concentration, you get tired easily, recent events are easily forgotten, and mental fatigue occurs.

It is an amino acid derived from glutamic acid. It is found in small amounts in some food groups like meat, soya beans among others. It is believed that L-pyroglutamic acid is a natural brain- boosting nutrient for a better mental health. It has brain-stimulating effects that help the brain cell to work efficiently enhancing one’s mental skills and capabilities.

L-pyroglutamic acid also improves blood circulation in the small arteries of the brain, keeping the brain cells healthy. Healthy brain cells mean a sharper mind, and a healthier memory. L-pyroglutamic acid is also being used to treat patients who feel mental fatigue very often. L-pyroglutamic acid has memory boosting capabilities making it a highly studied nutrient as possible cure for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Better cerebral metabolism, improved microcirculation, healthy neurotransmitter function, increased mental energy, and enhanced memory function are the other benefits you could get when you take in L- pyroglutamic acid.

Interestingly though, L- pyroglutamic acid has been studied a lot for its beneficial uses to the brain yet few are mentioned about its side effects. The only reported unwanted effects of L- pyroglutamic acid are mild head aches and gastrointestinal irritation. Studies and experiments made on lab rats show no significant danger of taking L- pyroglutamic acid in excessive amounts.

Since this only exist in small amounts from its food sources, it is best to take them in supplement forms. Most products that contain L- pyro glutamic acid are generally considered as safe for consumption. Considering the severity of the clinical manifestations of brain exhaustion, the recommended dosage for L-pyroglutamic acid is started at 500 mg to 1 gram twice a day. L- pyroglutamic acid sometimes irritate the intestinal lining that could result to diarrhea. To avoid this side effect, do not take it on an empty stomach. Effects on the brain activities can be expected two weeks after daily supplementation. Better concentration, lesser mental fatigue and stress plus an improved memory are the first therapeutic effect that the patient will notice.

It should not be given to pregnant and breast feeding women, very young children and to people who take blood thinners like Coumadin and Aspirin.

Brain stress is unpleasant. It totally destroys your day and will give you massive headaches and your risk to acquire other diseases also increase. In times you feel mentally stressed out, you sometimes find yourself wishing for a mental black-out to be free from all those demanding thoughts that haunt you. But this is just a temporary measure. You need to look for means that will bring your sleeping brain cells to life.

Avascular Necrosis of Hip (AVN) – Successful and Effective Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Avascular necrosis (AVN) is a disease in which the blood supply to the head of the joint bone reduces drastically, causing a complete disorganization and ultimate collapse of the head of the bone. Though the hip joint is most commonly affected, AVN can also involve other joints such as the shoulder. This condition may be caused due to long-term use of steroids, excessive intake of alcohol, and chronic diseases like blood disorders and auto immune disorders. Of late, there has been a gradual increase in the incidence of auto immune disorders with a resulting increase in the use of steroids; hence, AV N is being diagnosed much more frequently. Patients in their late 20s and early 30s usually present with this disease.

The conservative management of this condition in the modern system of medicine is to give biphosphonates in order to possibly reduce the rate of decrease of calcium and thereby preserve the joint structure to the maximum extent possible. This is supplemented with graded physiotherapy to preserve joint function and maintain muscular strength. A slightly advanced condition calls for core decompression surgery in order to reduce stress on the joint. Further management is only with the use of pain killers like paracetamol, and to adopt a ‘wait and watch’ policy. Patients who progress to the third or fourth stage of the disease involving gross destruction of the joint are usually advised total replacement of the joint. Joint replacement surgery can be prohibitively costly; in addition, it may not provide the full range of movement which the person previously had with a normal joint.

In this scenario, Ayurvedic herbal treatment can be very successfully utilized to bring about a complete and effective management of AVN. Ayurvedic treatment can differ from patient to patient, depending upon the presentation of the disease as well as severity of symptoms, which usually include pain, stiffness, rigidity, and limitation of movement. Patients with a very mild condition can be given medicines to reduce inflammation, treat muscular spasm, increase blood supply to the joint, as well as provide medication to help reorganize the joint structure. This is usually supplemented with local therapy in the form of application of medicated oils and local fomentation. Mild exercises also help along with oral medication and local therapy. This treatment is usually sufficient for patients suffering from the second stage of AVN.

Unfortunately, most patients present for Ayurvedic treatment when AVN has progressed to stage 3 or 4, that is, the last stages of the condition. In this scenario, highly aggressive treatment needs to be instituted to bring about an early resolution of symptoms and healing to the maximum extent possible. Ayurvedic medication needs to be given in high doses for a period of at least six to eight months. In addition, highly fortified medicated enemas are given once every week for a period of two or three months.

Even in an advanced stage of AVN, Ayurvedic herbal therapy is highly effective and successful in treating and resolving all the symptoms of pain, stiffness and limitation of movement. Patients who take treatment and physiotherapy regularly become free of symptoms in just a span of three to five months and carry on their day-to-day activities in a normal way. Medications can then be tapered gradually depending upon the response of the patient and severity of symptoms. Low dose supplementation therapy can be continued in order to maintain the process of joint healing and reorganization, as well as to prevent a relapse of the condition.

Ayurvedic herbal therapy is safe even for long-term use. Ayurvedic herbal treatment can thus be judiciously utilized in the successful and effective management of AVN at all its different stages of presentation.

Alzheimer’s Disease: 2nd Stage Symptom

Changes in the brain of Alzheimer’s sufferers may begin 10 to 20 years before

any visible signs of dementia or any symptoms of Alzheimer’s appear.

Alzheimer’s disease progresses through three main stages:

The first stage is mild. The symptoms at this stage can be observed by

family members and considered as part of normal aging. The family

member starts to forget places or things. Sometimes, the family

member forgets their address. At this stage, it seem a little matter

of “mom or dad , they’re just getting older”.

However by the time the second stage appears, family members

began to sense that there may be something serious happening.

As the memory continues to deteriorate, there is a sense

that ther is a more severe problem.

During the second stage of Alzheimer’s disease there is evidence that

the damage to the brain has progressed. At the second stage of Alzheimer’s

disease there are some language problems. Family members fear that the

patient has had a stroke. The ability to speak is slow and labored.

There is a strain to articulate feelings or request. There may be an inability

speak clearly.

During the second stage of Alzheimer’s the person’s reasoning ability is

hampered. The person may decide to go to the grocery store at 2:00 am in

the morning. The person will not understand why this does not make sense.

Some individuals become combative or emotional over perceived injustices.

The processing of sensory information such as reacting to heat or cold

becomes impaired during the second stage of the disease. The brain is not

connecting or interpreting sensory messages from the body. Alzheimer’s

patients have been known to not feel the heat from a stove or not react to cold.

In the second stage of the disease, the symptoms and signs of Alzheimer

have become more obvious. As the disease progresses, family members can

see that other regions of the brain have been affected. There are

pronounced changes in behavior and there is a pronounced attention deficit.

The progression of Alzheimer’s disease can vary. The individuals who

have been studied shows that the duration of the disease may vary from

3 to 20 years. Early detection is critical to controlling and slowing

the progression of the symptoms. Finding the right Alzheimer’s treatment

plan is important at this stage. The disease can be slowed at this stage.

There are medications approved by the FDA to treat Alzheimer’disease. There

is no cure. However, some medication have been tested that delay the progression

and possibly the onset of new Alzheimer’s symptoms, Many of the drugs that are

prescribed for Alzheimer patients are designed to help with the emotional or

the behavioral changes that occur.

When the individuals starts to experience any of the symptoms associated

with the various stages of Alzheimer’s, they should seek medical help immediately.

Don’t confuse the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease with the changes that take place

in normal aging. Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging.

Some studies indicate that some of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s may be due to

other conditions that impact the diagnosis. Depression, some of the side effects

of other medications, excessive use of drugs or alcohol or even nutritional

imbalances may be disorders that can impair memory and other

If these problems are identified early on, individuals can sometimes

stave off the progression of the disease by being reactive to the symptoms

Top 5 Characteristics of a Good Weight Loss Plan

A great weight loss plan strikes a good balance between a healthy diet and an active lifestyle. It sounds so simple in theory, yet most of us who want to lose weight find it hard to stick to this philosophy alone. What’s worse is that we have read a tumultuous amount of literature regarding the “proper” or the “best” way to lose weight, and, somehow, we end up confusing ourselves even more.

When you make a commitment to lose weight, you have to make sure that you’re choosing a healthy weight loss plan. You may ask how can you ensure that the weight loss plan you’re about to make is the right one that will work for you. Well, simply put, it is all about watching what you eat and making sure you are engaged in an active sports or exercise program. For people who are bordering to obesity, it is best to consult a health fitness coach or a nutritionist to ensure that you get professional advice on the best weight loss plan that will suit your needs and lifestyle. However, for people who have gained a bit of weight and are wanting to live a healthier lifestyle, here are the top five characteristics of what constitutes a truly healthy weight loss plan.

1. Proper Nutrition Over Single-Item Diets

There is no short cut to healthy eating. For your benefit, simply avoid any weight loss plan that urges you to eat only one food item. Most people are under the impression that if we eat only foods that will increase fiber or protein intake, we’re good to go. It is worth emphasizing that healthy weight loss means eating a well-balanced diet from all food groups. Starving and food deprivation will definitely crash your system in the long run. You may lose weight temporarily but this will only encourage an unhealthy relationship with food. The key thing to remember is moderation.

2. Calorie-Conscious Diet Plan

Being mindful of what you eat is the first step to healthy eating. The best way to do this is to follow a plan that allows you to track your calorie intake. Being aware of how much calories you take in is an essential part of losing weight. A lot of us find it tedious to count calories. However, a healthy weight loss plan ensures that you get just the right amount of calories your body needs to burn energy. There is no need to eliminate caloric foods in your diet. Just choose a diet program that makes it convenient for you to calculate the number of calories you need to lose a certain amount of weight. Reading food labels is a good start.

3. Portion Management, Water Intake, and Weight Loss

Aside from calories, a good weight loss plan should encourage you to cultivate portion control. Again, there is no need to deprive yourself of food. A good weight loss plan allows you to exercise your inner discipline to consciously eat in moderation and in reasonable amounts to keep you satisfied and healthy at the same time. In addition, proper hydration is a key factor in healthy weight management. Most of us take water for granted. We don’t drink enough water during the day. Worse, we forget how important water is in healthy living. Proper hydration plays a major role in detoxification. Drinking 8 or more glasses a day washes away all the toxins, wastes, and even excess water weight, making you feel light, healthy, and fit. It’s even a good technique for enhancing satiety when eating.

4. Workout Program

A good weight loss plan should involve a regular exercise program. Regardless of what type of sports or exercise you wish to participate in, being active is a major requirement for losing weight the healthy way. Make sure you engage in a gradual change. Nothing too intense at first, and then slowly increase the intensity to ensure proper body conditioning. A lot of people who have gained weight have lived sedentary lifestyles for a long time, so it’s important to get active slowly but surely to avoid injury and to ensure long-term success. You should start gradually, say 20 minutes a day. You can start by simply taking a walk or a jog around the park. Overtime, you can then increase the intensity and duration of your exercise program to avoid exercise rut and to keep the challenge. Just like a well-balanced diet, there is no short cut to losing excess fat than moving your body. A workout program is also a great way to enhance your mood and self-esteem in the long run.

5. A Weight Loss Plan That Suits Your Lifestyle

Losing weight the healthy way is basically a big lifestyle overhaul. You don’t have to be fazed by this long-term goal. Choosing a healthy weight loss plan should require an assessment of the lifestyle that you currently have. To ensure that you can stick to your weight loss goals, plan a weight loss regimen that allows you to still live the way you want to without compromising your health and your happiness. If you are a career-driven individual who is always on the go, choose a weight management plan that doesn’t require 24/7 of your time. Better yet, find inspiration in the current lifestyle that you have and extend it to your healthy living goals. Busy people can stick to an afternoon or weekend schedule for their exercise regimen. Eating healthy food when you’re always on the go requires a bit of meal planning and time management. There is always a way to adapt a good weight loss plan regardless of your career or family demands. You just have to manage your time well, and be committed to making healthy choices.

Optimal Frequency For Acupuncture Treatment

How often does one schedule acupuncture appointments? This is a question that comes up very often in my clinic. In fact, the answer is critical to an acupuncture patient’s ability to maximize benefit from any given course of treatment. Bob Flaws in Acupuncture Today writes, “Acupuncturists often say, ‘Acupuncture works!’ I would add, ‘Yes, especially if you do it often enough.'” (“Acupuncture and the 50-Minute Hour,” Acupuncture Today, October, 2007, Vol. 08, Issue 10)

Every week, I teach a 1 hour class for new patients entering our acupuncture program at the HMO I work for. I use a PowerPoint Presentation to share quite a bit of information. I spend a good amount of time during the lecture on this very point: frequency of treatment matters to the outcome. Often Western patients of acupuncture mistakenly believe they can get treatment in a haphazard fashion or infrequently and still reap a great benefit from the therapy. The schedule that is convenient is not always the one that is medically efficacious.

I strongly urge acupuncture patients to get their treatments done as frequently as possible at first, with the possibility of slowing down after a while. What is frequent enough? The standard of care in Chinese hospitals for the treatment of chronic pain conditions (the bulk of what I treat at Kaiser) is daily acupuncture for a course of 10 treatments. On the outside, it’s delivered every other day and in acute cases, up to 3x per day.

The first core idea around doing frequent acupuncture treatments is that the effect of acupuncture can accumulate if it is done frequently enough. We want to engage this accumulative effect in order to render long-lasting results in our acupuncture patients. Many times I have had patients return to my clinic and report that they received 1-2 years of great relief from their chronic pain condition after just 6 acupuncture sessions!

The second core idea is that in order to engage the accumulative effect one must prevent backsliding into pain (or other symptoms). A typical pain-relief result after just one acupuncture treatment is 1-3 days. Who is typical? Nobody! Everyone is a unique individual. Therefore I ask my patients to pay attention to their result so we can figure out their optimal frequency of treatment.

I’ll give an example. “Betty” comes in for a treatment of her chronic lumbar pain due to spinal stenosis. She gets 3 days of relief following her first acupuncture treatment. This means that her optimal frequency of treatment is 2 sessions per week with 3 days in-between treatments. If she adheres to “the standard” weekly treatment schedule, she will get relief for 3 days but for 4 days her pain (or other symptoms) will have a chance to get back up to their original level – or get worse. Then, we must start over again at square one.

Allowing one’s pain to backslide during a course of acupuncture treatment does not allow a patient the opportunity to build up momentum for healing and the optimal result from treatment. It is my belief that failure to achieve results with acupuncture has less to do with the practitioner’s protocols or time spent with each patient and more to do with failure to achieve a proper treatment frequency.

I had an opportunity to study with Dr. Richard Tan while attending the Five Branches University DAOM program. His opinion on this matter is that treatment frequencies are spaced differently depending on how long the patient is undergoing treatment. The first few weeks or the first month of the course may be every-other-day to 2x/week. Then, for weekly treatments for 4 weeks. Then every-other week for 8 weeks, or something along these lines. This makes sense to me because theoretically, we are achieving results for the patient and their interval of relief is getting longer as they move through the course of treatment.

In my clinic I do not have an opportunity to treat patients in an ongoing fashion. I am given a referral or two of 6 sessions of acupuncture for any given patient with any given chronic pain problem. So for my clinical setting it is critical that patients do frequent treatment in order to render rapid and long-lasting relief from my acupuncture treatments.

Female Foeticide: Why and How It Is Performed – Its Prevalence and Measures to Stop

‘”Instead of cradle, you rested me in a trashcan. ‘Oh, how so easy, Ma, you threw me by just a scan?!’ Please, let me be born.”‘

This is a female foetal cry we hear – today and every day. How long are we ready to hear this silent language?

Female Foeticide:Before she could come to existence, the female foetus is put to an end. This is female foeticide. It is the abortion of a foetus of female gender as a result of sex-determination test which is done by Ultrasound scan called USG. In medical terms it is also termed as termination of pregnancy and it is illegal in India.

It is ironic that we know such a law does exist…

Ultrasound (Sonography): This is a medical research procedure which was intended ‘solely’ for detection of fatal foetal conditions. Abbreviated as USG, this diagnostic medical test uses high frequency sound waves to obtain images of the body. However, in the wake of couples opting to have only a male child, this vital diagnostic procedure has been in gross misuse for selective sex.

This practice has permeated so deep that it has almost become a norm with many of couples to permit themselves to the choice of bringing a baby to the world. It is a sad indictmentthat over years this shameful procedure is blatantly practiced. This gory act is committed unabated, resulting in women number in India to a fast deplete.

Unfortunately, this urban phenomenon has fast spread to rural areas, too thus bringing down the number of girls, as compared to the boys, in any given society. If left to run its course, experts anticipate a still gross imbalance in the sex ratio in years to come.

Difference between ultrasound and sonography: These are two terms which are regularly used to mean the same thing. However, there is a subtle difference between the two.

Technically, ultrasound refers to the frequency above that, which humans can hear while sonography refers to the practice of using this frequency to create images inside the body.

{Humans can hear in the range of 20-20,000 cps (cycles per second), and ultrasound ranges anywhere from 1 to 20 MHz (with one MHz being one million cps)}.

USG is performed by a sonographer, who is a specialized healthcare practitioner qualified to perform diagnostic ultrasound/sonography. The latter uses ultrasound waves and special equipment to create the images.

In order to affect this, the sonographer locates the organ, tissue or foetus that needs to be imaged. He then positions the equipment at the proper angle to allow sound waves to bounce off the location – under study – so it can create an image.

The images of the structures are then taken and oddities are spotted. With meticulous care, clear images of the problem area are taken, that the doctor might need to address.

What defines a girl: She is a doting daughter, loving sister and a beauty queen in her youth. She transforms into a selfless, respectful mother, and a traditional gracious grand-mother – in the form of a – virtual goddess who showers us all, with her blessings and love.

When she marries, she dreams of a tiny cry, happy laughter, and gurgling infant. She conceives and there is jubilance all around. Then the day comes when she becomes a mother herself -the mother of a baby girl. It is here, the tempo twists, because she delivered a girl.

A girl child is seen as a liability, even in a mature and an awakened society.

Who are the people who resort to this shameful procedure and attack their own child with medical terrorism? They are not people outside our society. They exist in our own society.

These are the parents and certain communities who prefer a boy to a girl.

Remedial measures: Our share of responsibility: What is the desired solution to curb and possibly end this viral spread? The whole system is to blame. The whole society has gone corrupt because there is destruction of half the population of the society through this malpractice.

We are involved in it.

We place a great premium on having sons. We need to stretch our imagination and imagine a society, a country without women. If this discrimination is to do with cultural beliefs and social norms, let us challenge those norms to stop this practice.

It is a long term task to inoculate individuals and institutions against this infection of despicable human practice. We need to foster a culture of goodness and human dignity in the organizations, individuals, and religious leaders.

Every mind needs to stretch itself and reach a practicable, plausible solution. Only a breakdown of patriarchy and a change in the perception of women’s role in society can ensure a more balanced sex ratio.

Men need to be aware that apart from the murderous thinking this habit is also hazardous to a woman’s health. This monstrous practicehas become so rampant that society is fast losing its secular, social, and humanistic fabric. The picture is shocking. It has not gone less rather it has emerged on an upward trend every year. A vibrant, effective campaign remains a challenge.

The Strongest volunteer: We – the women are restoring to our fate by being integral to this crime, not realizing that we would not have been born, had our parents done the same.

We need to change our attitude which explains such lowly and shameful behavior. We must resist the son fixation. Is not it like cutting our noses to spite our own faces? We need to shut our eyes to see because we only have agreed to contribute toward gradual disappearance of Eve.

Worst hit Indian states: According to a recent (June 2012) report published in TheTimes of India, Beed district (Maharashtra) is the worst ten in the country which is barely better than the states of Haryana and Punjab, India.

On an average, Beed district’s sex ration at birth was 831 girls per 1,000 boys in 2010. The average came down to 768 in 2011, a sharp decline of 63 points.

This ratio dipped to as low as 702 girls in January and remained below 798 for the remaining months. According to Lek Ladki Abhiyan, a non- governmental organization (NGO) that works against female foeticide, a sex ratio of 702 to 798 in 2011 implies that 250 to 154 girls are missing out of the expected 952 girls for every 1,000 boys in Beed district every month.

Remedial measures taken by the government: According to a report in The Times of India, the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) suspended 13 doctors against whom the state government had initiated action under the Preconception and Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act.

The suspended doctors hailed from Beed, Osmanabad, Jalgaon and Pune. Some of them are gynecologists while others are radiologists. If they are found guilty their membership would be terminated.

The MMC has the power to temporarily or permanently suspend doctors. Incidentally, it suspended 5 doctors a few months ago. After a large number of sex selective abortions and female foeticide cases were reported from Beed and surrounding areas, there were stringent checks to ensure that the rules laid down under the PCPNDT act were followed.

The state Family Welfare Bureau Office and the state Bureau of Health Intelligence received vital statistics and got monthly data from the District and Municipal Corporations, about the number of children born. The average drawn from the data shows that there was a sharp decline in the ratio, which was worrisome,” state health officials said.

Census 2011: According to the provisional figures of census 2011, the comparison of observed sex ratio at birth in India for the period 2007-09 was 906, while the internationally observed normal sex ratio at birth was 952 or more girls born per 1,000 boys.

Accordingly, it is estimated that the practice of prenatal sex selection has resulted in approximately 5.7lakhs girls missing annually in India during the period 2001-08. This is an estimated 4.5 million girls missing over the last eight years (2001-08), the report stated.

If consolidated efforts were made by the state health department by involving its grass roots network of health workers like Asha (accredited social health activists and ANMs (auxiliary nurse midwives), the sex ration can be improved in Beed district.

In-vitro fertilization: This procedure has brought some pleasant surprise and quite encouraging news.

Gujarat may have ranked lowon the sex ratio scale in the 2011 census, but the trend is quite the reverse for test-tube babies where girls are beating the boys, at least in in-vitro fertilization (IVF).

The 12 IVF centers in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, have shown a heartening trend – a total of 291 girls were born against 241 boys in the last one year.

Hopefully, after spending several lakhs of rupees having gone through sophisticated medical tests and months of wait by the prospective couple, let us hope a female foetus will not be terminated once she resulted out of an In-Vitro Fertilization.

With willingness and determination of each individual to oppose this practice and a strong ethical approach, coupled with the collective efforts of society and the government – we expect more toothless smiles from our bamino baby girls.

Let us expect a streak of sun shine…

Natural Hemorrhoids Cure – How a Piano Player Suffered in Silence

One of my passions is playing the piano, and I do play semi-professionally (meaning I do get paid). However, there is nothing worse than sitting for a few hours on a hard, wooden piano bench when you are suffering from hemorrhoids (aka hemroids, hems, piles). I suffered silently with this infliction because I was just too embarrassed to go to a doctor for a rectal exam. It’s not one of the things I wanted to rush off from work to try.

I first did what everyone probably does in this situation: I went to my local pharmacy and asked what they had to offer in the way of over-the-counter products. I was lead to the aisle for hemorrhoid products, and I picked up one of the better known products – a cream. Although I did get some symptom relief from the cream, it really did nothing for reducing or eliminating my hemorrhoids.

Back to the pharmacy, I asked for something “stronger”, and I was lead to a suppository product. Of course when you’re in that much pain or suffering from the itching and burning, at that point you’ll try just about anything. So I did – I bought and tried the suppository.

Again, I had some moderate relief from the symptoms of burning and itching, but it simply did not make my hemorrhoids go away.

After several days of suffering, I finally broke down and went to my doctor. He said I had a “thrombosed” hemorrhoid, and he said if it did not go away on its own that it would require surgery for permanent removal.

I just could not believe that such a common ailment could only be resolved by going under the knife of the surgeons. So I started my due diligence and researched this painful issue.

After many hours of searching and comparing, and yes reading some boring medical journals, I learned how I could get rid of hemroids with a 100%, natural method. Of course, with my back against the wall I thought I had nothing to lose and everything to gain with the possibility of living pain free and without hemorrhoids.

I purchased this product with some hesitation because, just like the pharmacy’s over-the-counter products, there were claims of a natural cure and permanency. To my astonishment, I was not only getting pain and itch relief, but I was also experiencing a reduction in the swelling, even with my thrombosed hemorrhoid.

My treatment started with an examination of my diet, and I also discovered that I was a bit dehydrated, which was a bit of a shock to me since I drank a fair amount of bottled water.  Next, I followed the treatment plan as described, and I included some of the suggesstions of the plan.

Within the first three days, my hemorrhoids were nearly gone, and after following the methods described in the plan they were completely gone in another 2 days.   For me, the methods were easy to follow, the adjustments I made were very easy to change from my previous behaviors, and it was totally natural.  This was a great relief to me because not only did I avoid surgery, but I learned several important things about improving my overall health,

I learned quickly that the only way to get a hemorrhoid cure was to go right to the source, which in this case was to kill the causes of the hemorrhoids. I learned so much about the causes of hemorrhoids, including diet, hydration, exercise, and other causes. Now I am itch and pain free, and I resumed my passion at the piano bench with absolutely no problems. Additionally, after several months I have not had any recurrence of hemorrhoid symptoms.  For me, this method was far and above what I expected, and I was totally blown away that I went from facing a surgery to remove a thrombosed hemorrhoid to no symptoms at all in less than one week.

Drugs That Make Rheumatoid Arthritis Worse – And What To Do About It

To cure Rheumatoid Arthritis it is very important to do everything perfectly ‘right’. However, many RA sufferers are inadvertently making their RA worse because of a lack of information or by not fully understanding the underlying cause of this disease. So today, to help you on your path to wellness, I would like to warn you about two types of drugs that can make your Rheumatoid Arthritis worse in the long run and give you some simple tools so that you can protect yourself from this problem.

The two drugs that I will discuss below can both have the effect of upsetting your digestive system in the worst possible way. These drugs create turmoil on the healthy bacteria in your intestines (which are called ‘probiotics’ by the supplement companies) and damage your intestinal wall leading to poor absorption of nutrients and a concept known as ‘leaky gut’ by Naturopaths. ‘Leaky Gut’ is actually a descriptive term for having holes in your intestinal wall, which then allows large foreign molecules to enter your blood. These foreign proteins entering your blood can trigger a state of ‘molecular mimicry’ and result in your body attacking it’s own joints in a state of innocent confusion. Quite literally, by having a depleted intestinal environment you will experience worsened symptoms of RA.

So, we need to look at the following two drugs very seriously! Let us first look at Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID’s)

There are a large range NSAID’s that are commonly used to treat arthritis. Research has shown that most of these drugs actually contribute to ‘leaky gut’ and thus perpetuate Rheumatoid Arthritis through the mechanisms I have described above. The offenders include all the common brands like Advil, Motrin, Naprosyn and so on, with the only exceptions being aspirin and nabumetone (Relafen). [1] It has been shown that these drugs can increase intestinal permeability (holes in the intestinal wall) within 24 hours [2]

My personal experience matches these findings. The first medication I took for my RA was one of the leading NSAID brands. It was fantastic at relieving my pain for about 2 weeks. As time wore on the effects of the drug diminished and so after about 3 weeks I decided to see how I felt once I stopped taking the drug. After stopping this medication I felt about twice as bad as what I was before I started taking it. Looking back I believe that my intestinal wall took a battering during this time, which in turn led to increased swelling and pain.

I learnt most about my body and my food intolerances by remaining off these drugs. These drugs interfere with the critically important communication that occurs, via pain levels, from eating a food and monitoring its effect on your body. By cutting out the pain with a drug I was losing all the information I needed to create a diet free of offending foods.

Since NSAID’s are common and are available over the counter we think that they can’t be too harmful for us. It couldn’t be further from the truth. If you are stuck at the moment on these drugs due to persistent pain levels then that’s OK – pain relief and protection from joint damage in the short term is obviously of paramount importance – but I’ll show you below some great ways to offset the long term effects whilst you wean yourself off these drugs.

But first, lets look at another drug that is wreaking havoc on your insides:

To start our discussion of antibiotics and their effect on the body, we first need to talk about something a little unusual – your intestinal bacteria…

In an ideal state of health you would have between 2-4 pounds of bacteria living inside your intestines in numbers upwards of 40 Trillion. This may sound like the premise of a horror film, but don’t freak out, the vast majority of organisms living in there are helpful, or at least not harmful, to our lives. Beneficial Bacteria (also called Probiotics or Microflora) are the good bacteria that live inside us with the majority found between the end of the small intestine and the distal colon. These tiny organisms are absolutely imperative to our health and we should really think of this big mass of mini life as a vital organ like a lung or a kidney.

The many important functions that our bacteria perform for us includes killing harmful bacteria, killing fungus (also known as candida), and building B vitamins for the rest of our body to use. They also help our bodies produce enzymes, help to change the acidity within our cells and play an important role in the development of the immune system by maintaining a constant dialog with our internal bodies through the surface of the gut. Our microflora also influences many of our hormones. So this healthy bacteria is very important stuff.

The word ‘biotic’ means ‘pertaining to life’. Hence a probiotic is literally pro life. Poor eating habits, stress and antibiotics (‘anti-life’) sometimes found in animal foods can wreak havoc on the good bacteria, allowing bad bacteria to multiply. Taking prescription antibiotics for a long period of time is catastrophic to your internal health. Doses of antibiotics not only kill the nasties, but also kill the good, innocent civilians in your stomach as well. A lack of healthy intestinal flora is a serious concern. I believe the cause of my RA was due mostly to taking antibiotics for years to combat some persistent acne. I blindly took these antibiotics from my late teens through into my early 20’s without too much of a thought, other than ‘gee, my skin looks good!’. I wish I had some idea of the bigger picture. Little did I know that I was creating an environment where I was wiping out my healthy bacteria, thus allowing unwanted pathogens to thrive. Pioneering orthomolecular researcher Dr F. R. Klenner says RA sufferers have a ‘shortage of B vitamins’. [3] Since B-Vitamins are manufactured by your healthy bacteria it stands to reason that if you’ve killed all your bacteria you’d be short of B-Vitamins!

So How Can You Combat The Effects Of NSAID’s and Antibiotics?

Without the correct approach, the challenge to uphold our intestinal health can be a difficult one. You have a leaky gut, a depleted mucosal lining and a shortage of healthy bacteria to rectify. Trust me, you never ‘accidentally’ fix these without knowing how to, since they don’t teach you this stuff in high school (and they don’t teach Rheumatologists this stuff at College either unfortunately). However, once you are shown how then it can be understood and followed easily and excellent results can be achieved in a short period of time.

How to replenish your good bacteria?

Well, many companies sell probiotics in bottles which enable you to supplement your supply of good bacteria via capsules. But there is a better and more effective way than this, which is to feed the existing bacteria with their favorite foods which allows their populations to grow naturally, rather than trying to add new guys to the mix. From my own experimentation, I have found that this is the best way to go and it’s far cheaper. Let’s feed the good bacteria and let them multiply! God knows you’ve been starving them to death up until this point!

So what do your bacteria want to eat? Good bacteria love fiber. The partially digested remnants of our meals, after arrival in our large intestines, become the foods for our microflora. Each species of bacteria survives best on specific kinds of nutrients. Friendly bacteria love all kinds of plant-food remnants, especially fiber from green leafy vegetables, whilst pathogens thrive when the diet is low in plant foods and high in animal products and processed foods.

What we eat determines the predominance of the bacteria species that will live in our gut. By changing from a diet based on processed foods and animal products to plant foods, you can suppress the growth of harmful bacteria and stimulate those that are beneficial fairly quickly. Major alterations in the microflora take place within one to two weeks of dietary intervention [4] As a treat to your little guys, good bacteria also love raw garlic, raw onion and artichoke.

How to re-establish your mucosal lining?

Eat brown rice. Avoid dairy products like the plague. (In fact, I might send you a whole email about dairy products down the track to give you the full picture. You won’t believe the lies we get told about dairy over the years!)

How to heal your leaky gut for Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Think of your intestinal wall like a skin. When you stop irritating it with the wrong foods then it will heal, like any wound on your exterior. So you can replenish your gut flora, heal your mucosal lining and repair your leaky gut all by minimising your intake of meat and dairy products and increase your intake of fiber-rich foods. In particular, eat green leaves, raw garlic, raw onion and artichoke which will replenish your bacteria even faster. Eat brown rice to help heal your mucosal wall. (Avoid white rice, which is junk food compared to brown rice since it has been stripped of most of it’s nutrients).

You will make some humble progress on this natural Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment and help combat the negative internal effects of the drugs.

Remember, your health is your responsibility and consult your doctor before making any changes to your medication. I am not a medical doctor (but I do have a PhD in results!)

Of several remedies, the physician should choose the least sensational – Hippocrates

Dissociative Disorders – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

People affected with dissociative disorders chronically escape their reality in involuntary, unhealthy ways ranging from suppressing memories to assuming alternate identities. There are four major dissociative disorders: dissociative amnesia; dissociative identity disorder; dissociative fugue; and depersonalization disorder. Common symptoms include memory loss of certain time periods, events and people; mental health problems; depersonalization; derealization; and a blurred sense of identity. Dissociative disorders usually develop as a mechanism for coping with trauma.

Treatment for dissociative disorders may include psychotherapy, hypnosis and medication. Creative art therapy and cognitive therapy may also help in treating this condition. The Ayurvedic treatment of dissociative disorders is aimed at treating the basic cause of this condition and preventing complications like depression, anxiety, eating disorders, severe headaches, sleep disorders, alcoholism, substance abuse, sexual dysfunction, self-mutilation and suicide attempts.

Medicines like Sarpagandha (Rauwolfia serpentina), Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis), Vacha (Acorus calamus), Mandukparni (Centella asiatica), Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi), Brahmi-Vati, Khurasani-ova (Hyoscyamus niger), Brahmi-Ghrut, Unmaad-Gaj-Kesari, Sutshekhar and Maha-Vat-Vidhvans are used in high doses to treat anxiety, depression, sleep disorders and the original dissociative disorder. An addition of Suvarna-Bhasma, Abhrak-Bhasma, Trivang-Bhasma and Laxmi-Vilas-Ras to the above mentioned medicines helps in increasing the therapeutic response

Different Panchkarma procedures can be used to treat patients with dissociative disorders. A whole-body massage is done using medicated oils like Mahanarayan oil, Mahamash oil and Mahasaindhav oil. The patient is asked to consume regularly medicated ghees like Brahmi-Ghrut, Panch-Gavya-Ghrut and Kalyanak-Ghrut, in high doses. These two procedures comprise the ‘Snehan’ therapy. Medicated enemas are given using Dashmool-Qadha and Sahachar oil. ‘Nasya’ therapy is done using medicated nose drops like Vacha oil, Marich (Piper nigrum) and Gud-Sunthi. The three combined procedures of nasya, snehan and medicated enemas initially have only a physical effect, however, on being repeated periodically they help to control the ‘Vata dosha’ and gradually help in controlling the dissociative features. ‘Shirobasti’ or ‘Shirodhara’ procedures may be used temporarily to sedate highly excited or disturbed patients.

Patients affected with dissociative disorders should be in regular touch with a Psychiatrist and a Counselor. They should establish a family and friend support system. Although the course of therapy can be difficult, many people with dissociative disorders are able to learn new ways of coping and lead healthy, productive lives.

Pediatric Crash Cart Medications

Pediatric crash cart is a crash cart or a “code cart” that is used for the emergent needs of young patients, six years and younger. Just like the adult code cart, the pediatric emergency code cart is placed in the hospital areas where it is expected that it could urgently be needed, in places where kids “crash”, or where the chances are that the kids may lose consciousness and need be resuscitated. Places such as in and near emergency rooms, intensive care rooms, delivery rooms, recovery rooms. We will explore the main differences between the pediatric, or child crash cart, and the adult trash cart here.

If you are in a position where you must decide on the type of the emergency carts that you are looking to acquire for your medical center or hospital, then this information will be valuable to you. You will be better able to see exactly whether you need a pediatric crash cart and why.

The main differences between the pediatric code cart and the adult medical code cart are: The type of the AED device used for reviving the child’s heart, the types of medicines, and the types and sizes of incision equipment, tubing, and other life-saving supplies.

AED devices for pediatric crash cart

Automatic Electronic Defibrillators, AEDs, or AED machines, are designed in two sizes, adult, and pediatric. Children’s hearts are smaller and beat faster. Their bodies are smaller and they require smaller electrode pads for defibrillation. Therefore, a pediatric code cart needs to be equipped with a pediatric AED machine, and with the appropriate sized electrodes. In an emergency, there is no time to switch over the machines and the electrode pads, so it is best to keep a pediatric AED machine ready on a pediatric code cart.

The pediatric crash cart medications

Not all medicines that are suitable for adults will be suitable for the children also. Some narcotics, for instance, may simply be too strong for the child’s body to sustain without the adverse reaction.

The medications you will find in regular emergency cart contents but you will not find on the pediatric crash cart medications list include the following drugs:

  • Amiodarone
  • Magnesium Sulfate
  • Procainamide
  • Vasopressin
  • Verapamil
  • Etomidate

Different sizes of incision equipment and tubing

All types of scalpels, tubes, syringes will be of smaller size, suitable for the size of a toddler or a small child. They include endotracheal tubes to access the inside of child’s windpipe, tracheotomy tubes to construct artificial opening into the windpipe due to difficulty breathing, nose tubes or nasal cannula, air flow meters, laryngoscope supplies, exam gloves, and suction devices such as suction catheters. Many of these come in child sizes to better fit the small bodies, be it for diagnostic or for resuscitation purposes.

Utilizing Ayurvedic Medicine to Treat Hair Loss

Ayurevedic medicine has been used in India for over 5000 years. It is one of the oldest forms of natural medicine in the world, with practices that have stood both the test of time and the rigours of modern scientific study. In the modern world, Ayurevedic treatments are in use all across the globe and millions rely on their remarkable healing powers every year.

The word “ayurvedic” comes from Sanskrit, where it means “the knowledge of life”. Although it and unani medicine have intermixed with classical Greek, Roman and Persian practices over the centuries to form complex medical systems in their own right, modern ayurvedic practitioners in India are often qualified medical doctors as well. This means when you try ayurvedic for yourself you can be sure that the people advising you are trained in traditional medicine as well as this ancient and time-honoured complementary therapy.

What Does Ayurvedic Medicine Contain?

Ayurvedic is concerned with natural remedies, rather than synthetic components made in a laboratory or pharmaceutical company. It uses natural herbs and minerals to heal a variety of ills and the methods have long withstood the test of time.

In the case of hair loss remedies, colour rejuvenation and even treatments for snakebites, the favoured herb to go to in ayurevedic medicine is eclipta alba. This plant goes by many names but that is its scientific one. Eclipta alba has been used for centuries in India, China, Taiwan and even as far afield as Brazil because of its remarkable natural healing properties. What’s more, it works fast.

The Many Uses of Kehraj

One of the most highly regarded of the herbs found in both ayurevedic and unani herbal medicine is Kheraj. This plant goes by many names across the world but its scientific name is eclipta alba. It is known as Kheraj, or Karisalankanni in the Assam region of India; where it is commonly used to cure many ailments.

Eclipta alba has been studied for decades by western science and its properties are now well documented. The herb has been used for centuries to treat snakebites in both China and Brazil, where it grows in the wild. In india, eclipta alba is often used as a black dye in both hair colouring and tattoos.

The strong dying quality of Kehraj has made it a popular choice for people with grey hair who want to restore their lost colour. The dye from the eclipta alba plant can be formed into an oil and massaged into the greying hair. When allowed time to soak in, the oils quickly restore the lost colour to the hair. This restorative ability was first documented in a scientific research paper published in 1955, and again in further studies in the 1970s.

Restoring Hair Loss Using Karisalankanni

The eclipta alba plant’s restorative qualities do not end at bringing colour back into greying hair. Sufferers of hair loss have sought out Ayurvedic medicine for generations because of the healing power of Karisalankanni hair oil. This herbal oil, made from the eclipta alba plant, is a powerful healing agent for damage to the hair and scalp.

When formed into an oil and massaged into the scalp, the chemicals in eclipta alba work to bring the damaged hair follicles out of their dormant state. Research in the 1950s, the 1970s and even as recently as 2009 have all demonstrated that eclipta alba hair oil not only coaxes damaged follicles back to life but also extends the amount of time they stay in the active growing phase.

As a result, using Kehraj or Karisalankanni hair oil on a regular basis will speed up recovery from hair loss and restore your hair to its natural, healthy state. According to the research carried out in 2009, eclipta alba oil will restore 160% the amount of follicles to active growing compared to allowing the body to heal itself naturally. This is truly a remarkable achievement.

Ayurvedic medicine is a time-honoured, and scientifically proven, form of alternative medicine. Many of its practitioners in India, where the system comes from, are also qualified medical doctors in their own right and they use ayurvedic as a complimentary process to their medical work. For restoring colour to your hair, and encouraging new hair growth where hair has fallen out, there is no comparison with ayurvedic’s natural treatment.

Interpreting Signs, Symbols and Coincidences in Your Life

It is not only in our dreams that we receive messages from our soul. Everyday of our lives, in each moment the universe, Spirit or God is speaking to us in dreams, signs, symbols, coincidences and synchronicities. At night when we go to sleep you can ask for a dream to clarify a situation, inspire you or help you make an important decision. We can apply the same technique in our waking time to by asking the universe for a sign or symbol that will help us make a right choice, ease our minds or help us with conditions in our life. They are messages that can pertain to your current life, your future life or something you really need to know.

Where do Signs come from?

Signs come from cultures, religions, secret societies, your heritage and the collective unconscious of the human race. I cannot tell you all the history and information here in this article regarding signs and symbols, it is much too much for here and now in my article. I can tell you if you have seen the movies, The DaVinci Code or Angels and Demons that Tom Hanks plays the character role of Robert Langdon who studies signs and is a professor of sort on signs and symbols. Basically, signs serve as messengers of important information about your current life or future or can be reflections of what is going on with you in your life and inside of you. I believe that signs are from all mentioned above and God, Spirit or the Universe – Whatever you feel comfortable calling The ALL That Is. And I am happy to share with you my experiences and knowledge gleaned from signs in my life.

How do signs work?

I have called on signs or symbols for many years, even though I don’t recall when and where I first used one. I know that I have always known that even little things, coincidences mean something more than first thought to mean. Have you ever been in a hurry and when you are trying to leave your house or office the phone rings, then you drop your briefcase and papers go flying, then you cannot find your keys and the darn situation just keeps going on and on and you are thinking to yourself “damn I just want to go what is the deal here?!” Then just as you take a moment, take a deep breath, your intuition tells you to just wait. Just then call comes in that was your friend that you were rushing out the door to meet telling you they are canceling or maybe the elevator got stuck and had you been on it you would have been stuck in it too. This is a messenger sign letting you know that hey wait a minute your timing is off…just wait.

Signs also reflect our inner world, acknowledged or not and they reflect our beliefs. This where the like attracts like thing comes into play too. If you are person who thinks all wealthy people are crooks then you will only see and hear stories and experience wealthy people who are crooks. Even if you are conscious of thinking no not all wealthy people are crooks your inner core belief still radiates out that energy or all rich people are crooks and that is what you attract. You must deal with the belief at the core subconscious level in order to eradicate it and change it for the better for you to attract better. If you really want to know what you truly feel and believe look around your life and see who and what is in it and what its reflecting to you.

How do signs appear in your life?

As mentioned above, it can be something not going along as you like it, being delayed obviously! If you ask the universe for a sign here are a few ways that the sign can appear to you:

Dreams: These dream signs can be coming from Spirit and or both your higher self pay attention to the most outstanding symbol, sign, word, phrase, emotion or song from a dream and see how it plays out in your waking life to understand it’s message.

Conversations: Pay attention to conversations, “slips of the tongue”, or over heard conversations (there is a reason they are having the conversation for you to be able to hear it.) Practice more on truly listening and not thinking about what you are going to say when you are in a conversation in order to hear messages for you. Be in the moment.

Random thoughts: Pay attention to fleeting seemingly random thoughts that pass through your mind while you are doing something or being “normal

Songs/Music: Have you ever started singing a song or humming a tune or I personally wake up almost every morning with some random song in my head. What are the words or title it could be a message for you.

Radio, Television and Movies: Words, scenes, commentary can all be a conveyance for a message to get to you.

Books, magazines, billboards, printed words: A word or phrase will jump out at you from the page. Sometimes, for a quick reading or answer to a question I will grab a book and sit with it for a few minutes quiet my mind and then ask a question and open the book and see what the first word or sentence to jump out at me says. Many times, it is just what I need to know.

People: People (known and unknown) can be put on your path to cross with you and give you the answer you need. If you think of a particular person that usually means to call them or see them that they have a message for you. Every single person is meant to see you or cross paths and you them otherwise we would not see them. Just think, you could be carrying a message for them too. It’s not always about us!

These are just a few ways signs are present in our lives or that we can call on signs and look for their message to come from.

Calling For a Sign:

Most recently, I have called on a sign to help me make a very hard decision of knowing when to “put to sleep” a dearly beloved pet.

My cat Chloe and I have been together since she picked me out at the shelter 16 years ago. She was the third addition to my cat family, of two boy cats who I had already been adopted by 5 years before. Since our journey together she has moved with me 3 times, seen her two “brother” cats pass on to the rainbow bridge and has gracefully loved my dog Pierre since he was introduced to her 7 years ago and has seen me in every emotional state possible! A few weeks ago, I noticed she was not up to par. I took her in for her annual and grooming and when I picked her up that day she seemed to have a stuffy nose. For the next 10 days she did not eat or drink and lost 6 pounds. Basically, I was feeding her and giving her water with a syringe every hour. She became severely dehydrated and with one of my other cats I had been through this before and the outlook did not look good for her. I called the vet and we discussed her various problems and her quality of life. I made the appointment for Friday.

That night, I prayed and wrote a letter to God then sat down next to her and told her and the universe: “Listen, I need a sign from you that if it is time for you to go on…if you are ready to go then nothing will change between now and tomorrow. However, if you are not ready to go I request the sign that you get up and eat and drink on your own.”

Four hours later, I was in the kitchen cooking and one of the ingredients I was using was tuna. After opening the can, lo’ and behold here she is in the kitchen meowing and rubbing against me. I picked her up and noticed her nose was completely cleared and she was breathing fine. I put some of the tuna in her bowl and she ate it all, then I opened another can of her food and she ate it all, she then drank from her water dish. Today, one week later, she is still eating and drinking on her own and up and about. It was not time, yet. I thanked the Universe and God for the sign. We are taking it one day at a time.

I have called on signs from friends and loved ones who have passed on to let me know that they hear me talking to them or that they are around. I have called on signs about jobs to take or not take or how to deal with situations. I have called on signs or symbols for knowing which direction I should go in driving or in life!

But, you don’t always have to call on a sign or symbol to receive one you just need to be aware of them and or coincidences, premonitions, or synchronicities and then figure out what that means for you. Here is another recent example from my own situation:

This past weekend I went to meet some friends for a coffee at a book store. I happen to put on a pendant that was a Christmas gift from parents of a former friend. This friend and I had been very good friends for years but have not spoken now for three years. Nevertheless, I still cherish the memories of our friendship and move forward and love the pendant and still wear it. This pendant is made of crystal glass and is substantial in size. And with no seeming cause, I was not pulling on it or playing with it…just standing there when it slipped from the chain and fell to the floor smashing in a million tiny pieces.

My inner knowing immediately went off that this was a symbol or sign of something in my life that is going on. After a day or so of contemplation, I have come to the conclusion that it is a symbol for a break through about to happen in my life and that when things are shattered particularly glass, an illusion is broken and I can see my life more clearly. In addition, perhaps pertaining to the former friendship that the piece represented, it is completely shattered and I had made the decision (months ago) that our friendship was one that was completed. I had forgiven her and moved on and hope the best for her wherever she is now.

After death communications:

I have loved and lost to death many friends and family and I have my own special symbols and signs that I request from them when I am saying hello or needed help with grieving to know they are OK and that they hear me or for them to let me know they are near. Sometimes a sign from them comes in a dream or they visit me in the dream or during the day. With some it is a particular song, some a flower or color or movie…. It something that is personal that connected me and that person while they were here.

There are so many ways our life and Spirit speaks to us if we would just open up and listen and pay attention. We really do have all the help we need and we are not alone.

I recommend highly one of my favorite books on signs and symbols from healer Denise Linn titled The Secret Language of Signs. I hope this article has helped you and I am happy to answer any questions you may have about signs, dreams or connecting with spirits. Please feel free to leave me comments too.

As I always say, remember we are the only one’s that can truly know what things mean to us and I only offer to help you understand and coach you through the process of discovering your souls messages for you.

Sweet Dreams.
