Gotu Kola – The Healing Herb

Gotu Kola, Centella asiatica (L.) or Hydrocotyle asiatica is a plant that has been long used in Indian ayurvedic tradition, as well as in folk remedies in other indigenous traditions. Recently gotu kola, has been noticed by western doctors and herbalists as a drug with different medicinal healing properties. Though it is used somewhat differently now then it was in the times of the Rg Veda there are some places where the uses cross over and thus give some substantiality to ancient civilizations knowledge of medicine. Today you can find Gotu kola at most health food stores and it is even being used occasionally in various commercial products.

Gotu Kola’s various names include water pennywort, Indian pennywort, thick-leafed pennywort and gota kola. The original literature written on Gotu Kola comes from India, most discussing gotu kola’s use in medicine. In Indian literature it is used for improving brain function, and creating a sense of alert relaxation. There is some research supporting this in America. Gotu kola hailing from the east and being used little in America was used mostly for healing the urinary tract in western herbalism, until it was picked up by the health food industry more recently. Since then, more western research has been done into the effects of the herb. Some medicinal uses on gotu kola as folk remedies include producing longevity, regenerating the mind, as well as producing a state of calm. In Sri Lanka it was observed that elephants, renowned for long life, fed heavily on the plant. Giving rise to belief in the locals of its effect on longevity.

It is said in India that the leafs of the gotu kola plant look like the two hemisphere of the brain. In Sanskrit, it is called brahmi (Brahma meaning cosmic consciousness). It is believed to help the flow of energy in the brain between the right and left hemispheres. In India it is also used as a decongestant and to alleviate sinus problems. (Lad) Taken before bedtime it is believed to promote a sound sleep and alert awakening. A Sinhalese proverb states “two leaves a day will keep old age away”, suggesting its effects that are being researched today on senility.

Within the last 15 years or so since the interest in herbalism has gained more of a foothold in the commercial market (or has the commercial market gained a foothold in herbalism), there has been modern scientific research into gotu kola and its effects on both the brain and its wound healing qualities. Chemicals associated with its sedative effect are triterpenes, and the saponins bramoside, and brahminoside (Crellin and Phillpot) (the last two seeming to come from the Sanskrit word Brahma). Other chemicals associated with its medicinal qualities include flavonols, amino acids, fatty acids, sterols, saccharides, and certain mineral salts. As well as essential oil, polysaccharides, and in particular the glycoside asiaticoside as a wound-healing agent.

An extract of gotu kola known as TECA is currently being used to treat varicose veins, as certain lab results show an effect on stimulating the synthesis of collagen in the walls of the veins which helps them hold their tone and function better. (Graedon and Graedon). This is a remedy approved by the commission E monograph. Clinical settings also are noticing gotu kola’s effects on healing surgical incisions and skin ulcers. In one trial TECA was administered to patients with parasitic infections that damage the bladder. Three fourths of these patients recovered well, with little or no bladder scarring using gotu kola. Many other reports are hailing gotu kola as a powerful wound-healing drug, it seems to inhibit scab formation and thus help with the overall healing process. Doses of gotu kola inlcude .5 to 1 gram three times a day. Tea is made by pouring water over half a teaspoon of dried leaves and steeping for ten minutes. Most standardized extract should be taken in 60 to 120 mg per day, fluid extract (1:1) 2 to 4 ml a day.

There is research that states various possible side effects of the drug that suggest caution in it being used daily for more then around six weeks. Alleged allergic reactions from gotu kola have been attributed to the presence of propylene glycol. (Crellin and Philpott) And thus should be used cautiously. It is also noted that high doses of the extract have a sedative effect on small animals. Animal research also indicates that some gotu kola constituents can reduce fertility. Few side effects are documented, these include contact rash, others receiving an injection of the drug developed a pain and discoloration of the site. One case involving ingestion the drug included someone getting a rash over the entire body; there is slight concern for photosensitivity as well. Also one component of c. asiatica, asiaticoside, may be a carcinogen. (Graedon and Graedon) . There is also a report that gotu kola should not be used with medications for diabetes or high blood pressure (Castleman).

Today you can find gotu kola on the shelves of almost any health food store, it is gaining popularity as are many other herbs, simply because they work. I have noticed appearing in supplements on the market today that incorporate a mixture of herbs and phytochemicals (polypharmacy), that gotu kola is used in some mixtures used for depression. These also usually incorporate a combination of GABA, L-dopamine, passionflower and St. Johnswort as well. This is possibly due to gotu kola’s calming yet slightly stimulating quality. If I were to market gotu kola perhaps I would make a study pill meant to be taken a couple of weeks before and during finals. This pill would include Ginko to increase blood flow to the brain. Calamus root as an age old remedy on memory and the nervous system. Perhaps some rosemary for reputed effects on nervous system. Gotu kola as well as basil, for its uses in ayurvedic literature for positive effects on the brain. Also I would throw in some vitamin B12 and perhaps riboflavin. This I am almost quite sure would work very well, in making one more mentally alert and capable. This is due to personal experience and research.

I use these supplements during times of test taking and notice slightly less fatigue which I attribute to gotu kola though I do not feel overly stimulated or an increase in heart rate, I also notice more of an ability to concentrate. Another idea for an herbal remedy that I believe would do very well is a tincture marketed for scar and wound healing. Since gotu kola is not advertised as a wound-healing agent I believe this has a lot of potential on the market. I’m sure once people got the results, it would become a huge seller. I myself have given it to different friends who wanted cuts to heal and have found it very helpful. One girl I gave it to that had a horrible accident on a bike cut her face completely. She found it to be a miracle drug, perhaps with vitamin e it would be a better product. Many of the medicinal claims here made in this paper have come from my research as well as my own personal experience. This is why I chose it as a plant to write about as I see much potential to create a sense of alert relaxation, ease of depression, concentration, and wound healing.

Medicinal uses of plants have been gaining more and more popularity, which is why they are gaining more respect and recognition in western culture. Herbalism is also gaining increased attention from governmental organizations seeking to regulate and restrict access to such herbs. Though there would be benefits of this it would drive out the independent herbalist producer, and hand over much authority to the pharmaceutical companies. This can be looked at as a double-edged sword, a curse and a blessing.

Gotu kola in particular is one herb with much medicinal promise that has much to be researched of in the west. Its just a nugget of value waiting to be exploited by western pharmaceutical company’s, supplement industry workers, and entrepreneurs of all sorts! A member of the ubelliiferae family, gotu kola is related to carrot, parsley, dill and fennel. But it has neither the feathery leaves nor the umbel arangment of tiny umbrella like flowers, goto kolas creeping stem grows in marshy areas and produces fan shaped leaves about the size of a brittish penny hence the name pennywort. A cup lke clutch of inconspicuous flowers develops near the ground.

Match Vs Adult Friend Finder – Which is Best? There’s Only One Way to Find Out!

With recent sad news in the UK about a young girl being lured to her death by a paedophile posing as a teenage boy on Facebook, we all need to know which dating sites are safe.

Adult Friend Finder or AFF for short is more risque. It’s certainly not for the faint hearted. As soon as the site loads you will instantly be greeted by some graphic photos representing what most members are looking for.

AFF is a site for open minded people who are looking for NSA (no strings attached) relations. This may sound awful to most romantics who, aren’t prude but believe sex should be between two people who love and trust each other.

No strings attached sex, like it or not is a new phenomenon in today’s fast paced society. It’s not just horny, lonely men, this is a craze enjoyed by rich, successful careerists who have no time for a relationship but still have natural urges.

This site allows you to almost pick and choose your ‘perfect’ sexual partner. It’s a very different, and quite daunting prospect and certainly not for everyone.

From personal experience, two of the best relationships I’ve been in have come from AFF, although it wasn’t typical of the site. We met in the day time and dated, spoke on the phone and sent many text messages, we had built an emotional bond, however there were always strong sexual undertones.

Match.com on the other hand is a more ‘traditional’ match making site. You browse profiles and not only judge potential suitors by their photos but also based on their likes/dislikes, their personalities and whether you can detect humour in their writing. You can either ‘wink’ for free or subscribe to send messages to potential matches.

The magic of Match.com comes when you first send a wink to a member who catches your eye. The excitement when you receive a wink back. Its school ground stuff, but you never out grow it. It is an innocent and sweet way of dating. You can tell after a few messages whether the connection is purely based on attraction or whether it goes deeper. Sometimes the messages dry up as you realise you have nothing in common, however when it clicks, you can find yourself writing essay after essay. There is the giddy excitement of checking your e-mail to see if he/she has messaged you back.

In today’s fast paced world, people are finding it increasingly difficult to find their ‘match.’ More and more people are turning to online dating as the stigma attached disappears as we become more and more acquainted with online social networking. It’s no longer the sad lonely nerd sitting at his computer trying to find a girlfriend; it’s the lawyer, the doctor, the teacher, students, single parents and many more.

Preventing and Controlling Skin Cancer

Cancer is becoming more and more prevalent around the world and skin cancer is the most common form. There are two types of skin cancer that are seen the most often – squamous cell and basal cell – and both of them have a high rate of success in curing. There is a third type of skin cancer – melanoma – and it is the most dangerous of all, especially to the younger generations. Why? Because 65 to 90 percent of all melanomas are caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. This includes exposure to sunlight.

In 2004 alone – which is the most current statistics available – 50,039 people in the United States alone were diagnosed with some form of melanoma skin cancer. 7,952 people in the United States died from it that same year. Medical organizations and the government do not track incidences for basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer so the number of people in the United States that were diagnosed with a form of skin cancer is probably higher.

Prevention and control for skin cancer is not just determined by what you do to protect yourself. It is also determined by specific risk factors each of us faces. Some people are more prone to the development of skin cancer than others. Risk factors can include, but are not limited to:

o Skin coloring that is light in natures

o Family history of skin cancer

o Personal history of skin cancer

o Exposure to the sun through playing or through the person’s job

o History of sunburns during childhood

o Skin that burns, reddens easily, freckles, or hurts when exposed to sunlight

o People with blue or green eyes

o People with blonde or red hair

o People who have a specific type of mole in large quantities over their body.

If you find that you fall into any of these risk factors then prevention and control for skin cancer should become a way of life for you. We cannot avoid going outside and it is proven fact that people need so much sunshine and fresh air for their well-being. With this being the case, anyone who is at risk should practice good prevention and control for skin cancer.

Prevention and control for skin cancer is actually very easy and just requires getting used to using sun-protective practices on a daily basis. It is very easy and here are a few things that medical professionals and governmental organizations recommend for safe outdoor protection from UV rays:

1. Seek a shady spot or go indoors between the hours of 10am and 4pm on a sunny day. This is when the UV rays from the sun hit the Earth the hardest and can do the most damage to your skin. As our ozone layer is thinning, more UVA and UVB rays get through making prevention and control for skin cancer even more important.

2. If you need to be outside during those hours, cover up any exposed skin with clothing. Clothing provides a barrier between your skin and the rays. Wearing white also helps as white reflects sunlight and heat.

3. Wear a hat with a wide brim to protect you face, head, ears, and neck from the sunlight. A baseball cap will leave areas exposed.

4. Get a pair of sunglasses that wrap around your eyes as much as possible and blocks out UVA and UVB rays. Look for a pair that blocks these rays close to 100%.

5. Wear sunscreen that is rated SPF 15 or higher and also blocks UVA and UVB rays. Even if you are just running out to the store, rubbing some sun block on your face, neck, arms and hands will go a long way to protecting you from harmful radiation.

When you use a combination of all these methods as prevention and control for skin cancer, you are giving yourself a better chance of not being stricken with it. Remember that some UV rays can also reach you on cloudy and hazy days and can reflect off of things like water, sand, snow, and cement. Make sure you follow the same methods during these times as you do in the summer.

If you are serious about the prevention and control for skin cancer for yourself, stay away from the tanning beds. Everyone claims they are safer, but it still takes UV rays to give your body that golden look. Even if those UV rays are manmade, they can still cause skin cancer.

One last note: if you notice any abnormalities in moles or freckles on your body, or you see something strange on your skin that has suddenly developed, contact your family doctor right away and have them examined. This could be the first signs of a skin cancer problem and the sooner it is caught and treated, the better off you will be.

Debt Relief Grant Money – Federal Financial Aid Programs

Credit card debt has become one of the largest financial problems faced by a majority of people today. Many individuals struggle paying off this debt without realizing that there are debt relief grants available from Federal Financial Aid Programs, that have been set up with the specific purpose of helping the average citizen pay off their unsecured debts. While some people simply do not take advantage of these grants because they are unaware that they exist, many others don’t utilize them because the process seems too confusing for them to complete alone. Fortunately, there are programs and software available to help you get this money.

While debt relief grants are out there, finding them and applying for them is usually the most difficult part. Remember that while you may eventually be able to pay off your credit card debt by working hard and paying the minimum balance for years, or even decades, getting one of these grants will offer you immediate relief. One of the most positive aspects associated with this type of money is that unlike a traditional loan, you usually are not required to offer some sort of collateral, and will also avoid large amounts of interest.

The process of receiving debt relief grant money will require that you first apply. The individual or government group that handles this kind of relief program will want to know how you qualify, along with exactly how much money you will need. One of the main considerations will be your ability to repay the money that is currently owed by you to all of your creditors. The easier it is for you to prove that repaying this debt in a reasonable time frame without large amounts of interest is impossible, the more likely it is you will be approved for a grant.

Getting the money that you need to finally repay your debts can seem like a difficult process, but doesn’t have to be. Instead of refinancing your current debts or taking out another loan with a large interest rate, consider applying for debt relief grant money from one of the many Federal Financial Aid Programs that are available. Remember that there are many types of software and organizations available that can help you apply and simplify the entire process for you. The benefits of finally paying off your credit card debt once and for all should be incentive enough for you to start applying for these grants today.

Lost and Doomed

All right people, settle in and mount up cause it's time to rant about politics again. Let me start off by assuring all of you that the current situation is absolutely hopeless. Nothing GOOD or USEFUL is going to get done. The rich are going to get richer, the evil are going to get stronger, and the kind are going to continue to get trampled. The state of the union is one of lethargy and despair. There now, are not you reassured?

Oh Archbishop, why is it so hopeless? I'm glad you asked. We'll start our little discussion by looking at the political division that looks to define every debate. Both parties in this country have some good points but, like all limited world views, they ever run into evil squirrel territory. At their best Republicans believe in self reliance, a free market, and personal responsibility. When those positive impulses get taken too far they can quickly become callous or hard hearted. They're also pretty damn useless during a national tragedy or when something needs to get built for everyone's benefit. On the other side of the aisle the best Democrats espouse collective cooperation and championing the poorest and least powerful. However if you give them free reign they immediately start telling everyone how to live and throwing money at useless shit. When our system works the two parties constantly negotiate a middle space between the common good and individual rights. The impulse towards self reliance keeps Democrats from forcing everyone into bubble wrap (for our own safety, of course) while allowing them to protect workers' rights and makes sure the infrastructure gets repaired. Since, in theory, both sides are also restrained by the Constitution we've tended to be a pretty moderate and reasonable nation. Damn successful too. All in all a pretty good system.

At least it was. Not so much anymore. Now it's messed up beyond redemption. How did that happen? Oh, the usual ways. Inattentiveness and unintended consequences. We made small decisions and indulged in lapses of judgment that created a system where compromise is impossible and extremism is rewarded. We disenfranchised the majority in a way that perpetuates these mistakes and ignores common sense. We gave in to our basest fears and prejudices. We trusted our system even when it had clearly stopped working. And, oh yeah, we pissed all over the Constitution. Maybe you'd like more specifics? Sure, let's do that.

All over the television the punditocracy is wringing their carefully manicured hands over both party's inability to find compromise space without terrorist threats or immediate capitulation. The average interview with the man in the street always looks to center around the phrase "we just need both sides to work together". Well yes, but no. Part of the problem here is that both sides have worked together a little too comfortably. Not on legislation or anything useful, but on insuring that the both of them get to keep what they've already stolen. The obvious example is how they both strive to keep any kind of third party from gaining vitality, but I'm not even talking about that. What I'm referring to is gerrymandering.

According to the Constitution we take a census every ten years and divide up congressional districts according to population. Since we're a pretty fluid country that population is always shifting and most states have to redraw their districts every time. The naive amongst you might think that these districts are drawn in order to insure fair representation or possibly by reasonable geographical lines. Ha ha ha. Actually both parties get together with the goal of creating as many 'safe' districts for themselves as possible. A safe district is one that's guaranteed to vote for one party REGARDLESS OF WHO IS RUNNING. An example: There are both very liberal and super conservative pockets of voters in California. The Republicans know they can not get a majority of districts and would rather not take their chances in a fair fight. The Democrats want as many safe districts as they can get so they give the Republicans just sufficient conservative districts to keep the Democrats from obtaining the necessary 2/3 major necessary to pass tax hikes in the State House. Both sides are happy. Everybody wins, except for the people of California who get to live with government shutdowns every year.

Over time both sides have gotten pretty sophisticated at this game. Today as many as 2/3 of all districts can be considered by one of the two parties to be 'safe'. Well, good for them. Of course there are a couple of down sides to this system. From a philosophical standpoint it's deeply undemocratic. In a 'safe' district you're not really going to get to cast a meaningfulful vote because only one party can win. If you're conservative in San Francisco you're just out of luck. The real problems, though, are not just theoretical. Gerrymandering makes it nearly impossible to unseat incumbents even if they're totally corrupt. Assuming an employee has power in their own party they areessentially get a free pass. In a very real way this means that many voters have representatives that absolutely do not have to vote in their interest. I know, it sounds like I'm being hyperbolic and lord knows I have that tension but not in this case. Nancy Pelosi can vote any damn way she wants and she'll still get reelected. There are Republican dudes who consistently vote against things that would be a boon to their own constituents. This is not democracy any longer, its oligarchy.

That sounds pretty bad, huh? Well, it might not even be the worst result of gerrymandering. Remember earlier we said that this country runs best when moderates of each party put checks on the other side's weaknesses? Of course you do. You're a careful reader. So guess what? Gerrymandering means that moderate representatives can not get elected! It's true. Let's imagine a district made up of voters scattered evenly throughout the political spectrum. If the Democrats nominate a flaming liberal they'll probably lose to a moderate Republican. The same is true if the Republicans nominate a racist Nazi. He'll lose because everyone in the middle will be disgusted. Either way a reasonable, moderate person will win much of the time. What's more they'll have to represent the district pretty well or they'll lose next time. Too bad there are not too many of those imaginary districts. Instead let's look at a district that's been specifically designed to give one of the parties a win. Hell, it does not even matter which one. The populace is, by definition, either more conservative or liberal than the average person. Now if you want to win you just need to get past the primary. You do not need any of the moderate votes from the other side. Over time the candidates from these districts get more and more extreme and less and less representative of the country as a whole. This played out in the last election as we saw super conservative 'tea party' candidates run against Republicans in 'safe' conservative districts. None of these crazy dingdongs would have stood a chance if they had to get even one moderate liberal vote in order to win. Crazy non masturbating witch lady, anyone? She won her primary but since she had to run statewide, she got crushed. If she'd been in a safe congressional district she'd be making laws right now. That's why we have a House of Representatives that's filled with extreme ideologies who do not need to actually 'represent' anything other than their craziest constituents.

Okay, so gerrymandering has messed up the House beyond any hope. At least we have the Senate. That's true, and they've taken institutional hopeless to a whole new level. Their arcane rules and 'senatorial prerogatives' are the most undemocratic process in our now fragile union. Any small group of senators can pretty much kill every good idea. Nominations sit for months. Bills are filibustered. Whacky minorities with an ax to grind can destroy the best compromises. If you want to save the Senate you're going to have to overhaul their rules. Good luck with that. But at least they tend to be more reasonable because they have to win larger elections, right? Nope. Wrong again. The Senate is the least fair elected body in the free world.

So you think maybe I'm being hyperbolic again. Okay, explain to me how it's fair that the average voter in Wyoming has 73 times more power than I do? It's true. There are about 500,000 people in the state of Wyoming. I live in California where there are about 36,500,000 people, or 73 times more. We each get to elect 2 senators. So every time the Senate votes the people of Wyoming get 73 times the representation. Being being ludicrously unfair it means that the more progressive, urban states are constantly having their needs undermined by a bunch of smaller states who could care less about their issues. Want to build a better mass transit system up the East Coast? Good idea. 80 million people would benefit. Too bad a couple million in Utah, Montana, Wyoming and Alaska can kill it. This is not democracy, it's tyranny of the rural minority. I have the greatest respect for the men who wrote our Constitution but they could not possibly have foreseen that the mayor of small city like San Francisco would govern more people than entire states. No one in the late 18th century could imagine that NYC would eventually have more voters than the combined population of 8 whole states.

It's beginning to sound pretty bad, is not it? I'm just getting started. Let's talk about money. Elections are expensive. Television time and big organizations cost a lot. In order to get elected you have to have access to some very deep pockets. Remember when they asked Dillinger why he robbed banks and he replied 'cause that's where the money is? Well, election campaigns are exactly the same. They need a lot of cash so they have to go to where the money is. Let's just apply a little common sense. Who has the most money? That's right, rich people and big corporations. Duh. Under our current system you have to please the rich and the corporate in order to acquire the money needed to get elected. And believe me, those two groups are not going to give away money without getting something in return.

At some point in every campaign cycle it comes to light that some huge corporation has a bazillion dollars to one of the candidates. The television talking heads dispatch a reporter to ask that corporation's spokesman if they think they're buying anything specific and the spokesman smiles and says all they expect in return is 'access'. The talking head accepts this answer as reasonable and moves on. Of course even the most naive watcher thinks that might not be all they're getting but let's take them at their word for a minute. All they want is 'access'? Access is everything. Who gets in to see an elected official and can plead their cause is likely to win. Why is it okay that their time is clearly only open to the highest bidders? Can you go spend an afternoon afternoon with your Senator to let them know what you want done? I bet not. But the dude who wrote him or her a big check can.

It gets worse. Selected representatives frequently want to get better jobs if they get voted out or choose to leave 'public service'. The giant corporations who fund them just happen to have they jobs they want. Here's how it works. Joe wants to be a congressman. Megamicrointeltech gives him a bunch of money and he wins. While serving he passes laws and gets rid of regulations and in general helps Megamicrointeltech make even bigger piles of money. After a few years he retires from his seat and goes to work for … I'm sure you get the idea. And it's not just elected officials. Cabinet members, military officers, high ranking officials of all kind and in all branches of government play this game. It's legal and not even newsworthy any more. If you want to pull your hair out by the roots get on the internet and see how many Treasury and SEC officials have or currently work for Goldman Sachs and then give a little thought as to why they were saved while their largest competitor, Lehmann Brothers, Was allowed to go under. Or why the TARP money all went to Wall Street.

Up until this point in our history there have been repeated attempts to control the amount of money and patronage in elections and governing. Now the Supreme Court has determined that almost any attempt to do so is unconstitutional. The Citizen's United case broke down the last few remaining dams and now the money is flowing like beer at a Nascar race. Big donors can pretty much give whatever they want and can do so ANONYMOUSLY. We've reached the point where industries can legally buy a Senator. No, really. Look at the math. It may take 8-10 million dollars to win a seat in one of the smaller states and that's petty cash to oil or mining or financial concerns. And remember that earlier we pointed out that every Senator is equal even if way fewer people get to vote for them. The system is for sale and brother, you are not in the bidding.

In a free country there is not a whole lot you can do to keep rich people from having more power. Okay, I get that. No problem. But there should be things you can do to limit corporations or specific industries from literally taking over. But not here in the good ol 'US of A. The Supreme Court has determined that corporations are individuals and therefor have all the rights guaranteed by the Constitution. You can not limit their speech or legislate their political involvement. What an unbelievable crock of dung. Corporations are NOT people. Corporations have one, and only one, function: to make money. That's reasonable. They're businesses. They should make money. Actually, if a corporate board were specifically not making money they would be voted out and sometimes go to jail for fraud. Humans are a little more complicated than that. Sure, we make money and have professional lives. But we also love and cry. We're capable of altruism and charity. We breed and sacrifice. We sometimes choose joy or knowledge or spirituality over commerce. And therefore we should have more rights. As long as we're willing to treat corporations as humans under the law we're going to end up being governed by them. End of story.

Since large corporations have taken over control of big pieces of the government they've gotten to change the way many things are regulated. A prime example is the media. Once upon a time we had strict regulation of the PUBLIC airwaves. That's right PUBLIC. We decided that if you want to broadcast you'll need to follow certain rules. You'll need to limit how many envelopes you own. You'll need to abide by the 'fairness doctrine' and let both sides of a political issue have equal time. You'll need to be clear about what's sponsored and who's paying for the content. Guess what? Those regulations are all gone. Now a couple of companies own almost all the fucking radio stations in the whole damn country. A few giant corporations own nearly all of the big media companies. And a free press, one of the cornerstones of democracy, is no more.

I'm not going to spend a lot of time arguing whether the remaining media is 'free' or not. It is not. It all has to make a profit and those profits go into relatively few hands. Instead I'm going to talk about some of the results of media conglomeration. First of all the media is, really or wrongly, no longer trusted. Ironically this means that in this age of near unlimited access to data, voters are dumber than ever. Many millions of people think that Iraq was responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Center and that Obama is a Muslim. Since the media is inherently untrustworthy it's easy to disbelieve them on the rare occasions they decide to actually point out that these 'facts' are totally wrong.

Our media has been completely ghettoized according to race, politics, and religious belief. I'm sure it's easier to make a profit if you know EXACTLY who your audience is and what they want to hear. It also means that you can tell them any damn fool thing you want. Since they do not watch other stations or read other publications they'll never know the difference. And what outlet is going to report on the excess power of corporations? It's almost impossible to be too cynical.

I'm not really telling you anything you do not already know. Look around you. Things are bad and people are scared. The feeling that your way of life is being stolen from you is real. In that Tea Party and the whacky pinko left are absolutely correct. The problem is both sides are being manipulated into blaming each other. It's the liberals and gays and Mexicans that are stealing your job and healthcare and education. The Tea Party is racist and ignorant and wants to destroy the country. Nope. Those things are happening, but it is not the other side doing it. It's Criminology 101. When there's a crime look to see who benefitted. In this case it's the rich, the ruling class, and big corporations. They've been busy overseeing the largest transfer of wealth in history while we've been busy rounding up the usual suspects and demonizing the 'other side'.

There is legitimate fear and it's being craftily manipulated. That's what makes this whole thing so tremendously difficult to deal with. The qualities and mechanisms that would help improve things are the very things that fear has taken from us. Debate, dialogue, trust, free speech, civil rights, tolerance and cooperation are the way out but we're too scared to give them a chance. And believe me, the perpetrators of these crimes know it. You can not turn on any media at all without being told to fear something. The whole TSA charade is to keep us in line and afraid. As a people we've allowed a false choice between civil rights and security dominate the debt and in doing so we've soiled the sacred document of our founding. Both political parties are responsible but I've written on that quite a few times before. I'll just reiterate how sad it is that we, as a country, turned out to be too cowardly to face the inner threats to democracy.

So, is all of this fixable? Perhaps not because both extremes agree on so much stuff. Both the far left and the far right are doing pretty well. They both think that people need to be told what to do and, having agreed, just want to spend time fighting each other for that privilege. Getting either side to change that primary fact is reasonably impossible. I also do not think that the indulgently wealthy corporations are willing to give up their newly found power. Change would certainly take many years and require constitutional amendments that take away corporate equality and alter the way we elect our government. Without those things we'll need a revolution and those always get bloody. But who knows, it could happen. And revolutions are exciting!

I suppose we could start by everyone returning to vote for either party. Ever. That may shake stuff up. Most importantly we need to stop defending ourselves through our politics. If every single person who reads this stops arguing left vs. Right we might have a chance. It's a false choice anyway because there is ALWAYS more that we agree on once we stop demonizing. I kind of doubt that will happen. Of course being a little more educated and lot less fearful and way more joyful would help, but that sounds like a pipe dream. Oh well, so it goes.

The wisest book in the world, The Tao Teh Ching, teachings that when the country is corrupt, patriotism is born. The more patriotic a leader or movement the more likely they are morally deficient. It's not a coincidence that patriotism seems to be at an all time high. The same is true for spirituality. When value is lost religious orthodoxy springs up. Those who have a real relationship with the universe or God do not need to demand piety from others. Again, not a surprise that so much 'Christian "bullshit fills the air while so little understanding and forgiveness fill our hearts. It's more important now than ever before to remember that no matter how messed up this society may get, you can still control yourself and your own life. You can be a model of freedom and spirituality even if you're the only one on the block. So get to it. Vaya con Dios and Viva la Revolucion.

Everything About Analog Chronograph Watches

One of the necessary items that almost everyone owns these days is watches. There are many types and models in the market. Whether it is an analog chronograph watch or a digital one, it is a must have piece. Watches are not only a device to tell the time, but according to their model and technology can perform other functions, such as operate as a stopwatch, as in the case of analog chronograph watches. In addition, watches are generally accepted as fashion items which can add classiness to the look of an individual. It is, therefore, not strange to find watches that are very expensive.

So what exactly is an analog chronograph watch? “Analog” means that its display is not digital but rather deploys mechanical movement of one or more arms or pointers to indicate the time. On the other hand, “chronograph” means a timepiece which can function as a timekeeper and stopwatch at the same time. Chronographs are usually more complicated than watches without the stopwatch capability.

Types of chronograph watches:

• Tape chronographs: The first type of chronographs that was used to calculate the time elapsed during horse races.

• Digital chronographs: They have a digital display. These watches require the use of batteries that need to be replaced. They malfunction with a higher frequency than the analog watches.

• Analog (automatic) chronograph watches: These basically are the same as digital chronographs, but without the use of batteries. They rely solely on kinetic energy derived from the movement of the individual wearing them. They are more complicated and harder to manufacture than the digital ones, which makes them more expensive.

• Others: In addition to the digital and analog chronograph watches, other types include split second chronographs, calendar chronographs and tachometer chronographs among others.

There is a term that should not be confused with a chronograph and that is “chronometer”, the latter meaning an officially certified chronometer that passed certain tests for such certification. In other words, all chronometers are chronographs, but not all chronographs have qualified as chronometers. Analog and digital chronograph watches are considered a fashion item for many consumers today. Celebrities such as actors and sportsmen are among the users of chronograph watches.

Uses of chronographs

• Military: A famous use of chronograph is represented by the Langley Chronograph, used by the U.S. Navy to record and analyze data regarding aero planes.

• NASA: The agency used chronograph watches during all of NASA’s Apollo missions to the moon by providing each astronaut with a fully functioning chronograph.

• Medical: Analog chronograph watches and digital ones have also found applications in the medical field. Some chronographs are used in hospitals to record vital data such as heart beats.

• Sports: Just like the first chronograph invented, nowadays chronographs are used to calculate and record speed and/or distance in different games.

It is now clear that analog chronograph watches are more valuable and usually more expensive than digital ones, since they include a more complicated design and craftsmanship. They are an item of fashion and classiness as well as a practical timekeeping device.

10 Interesting Facts About the Kiwi Fruit

Kiwi fruit have their origins in China where they are called the “sunny peach” (Yang Tao) or the “macaque peach” (Mikou Tao). They were first taken to New Zealand at the beginning of the 20th century or the end of the 19th, by a missionary, Isabel Frazier. This is how they got their English name, kiwi, which is a Maori word and also the name of a flightless bird indigenous to New Zealand. The British also call the New Zealanders Kiwis, and as it was first imported into Britain from New Zealand, the name is apt in the British context.

The kiwi fruit grows on a vine, although you would be forgiven for thinking that it grows on a small tree, as that is what the mature plant looks like. Now they are grown in Europe, particularly in Portugal, France, Greece and Italy.

In 1991 the first golden kiwis were harvested, having a golden coloured flesh rather than the usual green one which is used to such good effect in fruit salads.

The kiwi fruit is rich in nutrients, and has more potassium that a banana and more vitamins E and C than citrus fruits such as grapefruit, oranges and lemons. It also contains calcium, iron, phosphorous, magnesium, copper, some of the B-complex vitamins and the seeds contain an oil rich in Omega-3 which is sadly lacking in most of our diets. It has been hailed as a “super fruit” and rightly so.

In Italian studies on children it has been shown that children with kiwi fruit in their diets and who have respiratory problems such as asthma, shortness of breath and wheezing, have fewer problems than children whose diets do not include this fruit.

In other studies in the lab, in vitro, (not in humans or animals), extracts of kiwi fruit have had inhibiting effects on melanoma cells (skin cancer). The fruit may also help to prevent arteries clogging.

Kiwi fruits exhibit powerful antioxidant activity which means that they combat the free radicals in the body which can damage healthy cells and cause them to become cancerous. Having potent antioxidant properties also means that they can help to thin the blood and so prevent blood clots. Antioxidants also help to reduce signs of aging.

A face mask can be made from the skin and pulp of kiwis which tightens the pores and leaves the skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Just blend a couple of fruit and skins and apply the pulp to your face, leave on for 30 minutes and then rinse off with tepid water.

The lutein contained in kiwis has been linked to the prevention of prostate and lung cancer, although as studies are still underway, it is too early to say if this is actually the case. However adding kiwis to your diet would not harm you, as long as you remove the skin from commercially grown ones as it may contain pesticide residue.

A kiwi fruit also contains a fair amount of dietary fibre, so it can help to prevent constipation and reduce the risk of piles and colon cancer.

Finally on a lighter note, the US humorist, Erma Bombeck once quipped “Someone once threw me a small, brown, hairy kiwi fruit and I threw a wastebasket over it until it was dead.”

Resveratrol – 9 Very Good Reasons to Take Resveratrol

Clinical trials are still being conducted on humans to see the real benefits of this supplement, however, tests on mice have been very successful in proving the health benefits of well publicised natural compound. For a long time now scientists have been working hard to discover why the French have very low heart disease statistics compared with many other countries when their diet is often worse.

They now think they’ve found the answer – red wine – or more specifically an ingredient of red wine called resveratrol. The following are some of the results of tests that have already been conducted.

Energy and muscles – lab tests on mice have shown that those using the compound are able to run twice as for as those who aren’t. This is due to the increase oxygen consumption of the muscle tissue.

Heart – red wine drinkers are approximately 50% less likely to get heart disease. This is due to the compounds cholesterol reducing properties.

Brain and kidneys – It has been shown that mice fed on red wine and a high cholesterol diet seem to be protected against oxidative stress and high blood cholesterol

Prostate cancer – experiments showed an 87% decrease in prostate cancer. Additionally for those who already have it can slow down the progression.

Lung cancer – A 3 year study on men between 45 and 69 revealed that those who drunk red wine had a 2 % lower chance of lung cancer where those who drunk beer and white wine showed no reduction at all.

Antioxidants – Just like green tea it has high levels of antioxidants that can help prevent many diseases.

Anti-aging – The life span of middle aged mice increased 33%-60% when small amount of restervol were added to their diet. It kept their hearts healthy and slowed the signs of aging

Cell protection – It’s been found to inhibit the production of several cancer cells including stomach, colon, breast, thyroid and pancreas cancers.

Liver disease – Heavy alcohol consumption causes fat to accumulate in the liver which sometimes leads to fibrosis and other liver diseases. Excessive alcohol drinking inhibits the production of a couple of proteins vital for breaking down fats in the liver.

One of the most common diseases in America is Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). People who took red wine daily reduced the risk of NAFLD by 50% but those who drunk moderate levels of spirits and white wine were 4 times more likely of getting having suspected NAFLD.

The discovery of all these resveratrol health benefits is very exciting and offers us all the potential to live longer and healthier. Imagine what it would be like to still have the vitality to run around after you grandchildren or maybe even your great-grand children. How to Increase Penis Size With Your Hands

“It DOUBLED my confidence and self-esteem!” exclaimed a 36-year-old man in an email to me recently. He was referring to the natural techniques on how to increase penis size with your hands. Impotence is becoming alarmingly common in our society today. More and more married men are depressed because they are no longer capable of penile erection.

Some men can maintain erection only for a short time. Usually, whenever a man and woman begins to quarrel and accuse each other of cheating, be rest assured that something is wrong with their sexual life. Many marriages break up because of small penis size and failure to achieve strong erection. For a man, there is nothing as humiliating and depressing as having a small penis or impotence.

The good news for you today is that you can increase penis size with your hands. You will be using your hands to exercise your penis to achieve your desired size gain. The only requirement is the discipline to diligently do all the exercises. They are actually very simple penis exercises anyone can do at home or in the office.

Recent medical clinical trials have tested and proven that penis exercises can practically increase penis length and girth. The same clinical trials also found out that apart from the increase in penis size, you will be able to cure premature ejaculation and keep a stronger and long-lasting erection to the utmost satisfaction of your partner. Just by the appropriate use of your hands in a certain way.

Some of the real benefits of the penis enlargement exercises are increase in your ability to maintain stronger and long-lasting erection every time (making you able to last longer in bed), increase in the amount of semen you produce when ejaculating and improvement in your overall sex control and performance. Best of all your penis will grow bigger and thicker.

I bet you. Your partner will respect and cherish you the more. The usual quarrels over your failing sexual prowess will end with a bigger and thicker penis.

This is how to increase penis size with your hands. Ready? Go!

The techniques below will show you briefly how to get started with increasing penis size with your hands:

• Jelqing Technique

This is the most ancient penis enhancement technique known to man. It involves using your hands to “milk” your penis thereby increasing the amount of blood flow to your penis, while filling the Corpora Cavernosa (the part of your penis that is filled with blood and enlarged during erections). This will make your penis visibly bigger and thicker. If you can perform this exercise regularly, you can permanently increase the size of your penis size very fast.

• Penis Stretching

Here you will be using your hands to stretch your penis without giving you any pain. Once you can stretch the tissues of your penis, the cells will begin to grow thereby increasing the length of your penis.

• Kegel Exercises

These exercises will help you to keep a strong erection throughout and last longer in bed. They are meant to strengthen the pubococcygeus muscle, which is used to delay erections. Once you can successfully train this muscle, you will be able to get multiple orgasms and strengthen your penis to shoot your semen farther into the vagina and accurately control premature ejaculation.

One secret you can do immediately is to use Aloe Vera to eliminate impotence. Aloe Vera is one of the most effective remedies for impotence. Cut the roots of the Aloe Vera into small pieces. Soak 2 handfuls into 3 bottles of gin for 10 days. Then, add 2 bottles of water to dilute and begin to drink 1 shot two times daily. If you take this in the morning, you will notice an improvement in your penile erection by evening of the same day. Try it now for free!

Dietary habits play an important factor to increase penis size and your sexual prowess. Some food promotes penis growth while some weakens it.

Natural Treatment For Fluctuating High Blood Pressure

It is important that you control your high blood pressure and maintain a level. It is often wise to find a natural treatment for fluctuating high blood pressure instead of taking prescription medication. To treat hypertension naturally there are a few different things you can do.

The main thing your doctor should to is closely monitor your pressure readings. Generally, your doctor should schedule multiple readings a week. More than likely your doctor will also want you to keep a log book of your meals and activities to help determine the culprit for your fluctuations. You should also keep a record of all of your readings in the same book to see if your activities and meals are causing the fluctuations.

It is possible for your high blood pressure to begin fluctuating if you have changed your medication for controlling it. It is typical for a doctor to begin watching your pressure by requiring you to have your blood pressure taken at least once a month, especially if you are on medication for it.

It is common for a medication to work in lowering high blood pressure for about 12 hours after taking the medication, however after the 12 hours the blood pressure often increases again. This is when the fluctuation can interfere with the persons daily activities as well as overall health and well being.

Monitoring your blood pressure while you are at home might also be a recommendation of your doctor. This should be put in your log book. Another possible request from your doctor might be to take note of the foods you eat. In addition to watching the foods you eat you should be eating healthier foods. Avoid foods that are high in sodium and fried foods.

Begin an exercise routine that has been approved by your medical care provider. Increasing your daily exercise can very well be among the best methods for controlling your fluctuating hypertension. Natural treatment for fluctuating high blood pressure can be as simple as modifications in lifestyle and avoid situations that can put your health at risk.

If you smoke any type of tobacco, you should immediately quit, avoid drinking alcoholic beverages and eat healthier. With these minor but important modifications you should be able to regulate your blood pressure and maintain a healthy number.

Listen to the Mockingbird

I have been singing the beautiful song of the Texas state bird, the Northern Mockingbird laTely. I looked up information on mockingbirds and here's what I learned.

The male mockingbird is the one who sings during mating season in the spring. His tireless outpouring of trills, warbles, squawks and scolds recalls the verve of a Rossini overture. I can not say I know what a Rossini overture sounds like, but I'm sure it's classy like the song of the mockingbird.

Both the male and female sing in the fall

They are defending their territories, which center on a source of food for the winter. They also sing at night in the spring and fall often when there is a full moon. Only the male sings during mating season, first to announce his territory and then to attract a female.

The mockingbird can imitate dozens of other birds, as well as animals, insects, machinery and even musical instruments. There was one well-known mockingbird in California that imitated the fire sirens from a nearby station. Another one was known to imitate the call of an American toad.

Unmated males do more singing

Much of the singing has to do with courtship, but unmated males sing more than mated males and they more frequently fly up into the air as they sing. It is said that only unmated males sing at night.

I wonder about that. Maybe the unmated males sing at night because they do not have anything else to do – wash dishes, change diapers, feed hungry babies or whatever. Maybe they sing because they do not have to do the hard work or they sing at night after hanging out with the other singles as they go their way home.

The male may sing uninterrupted for over an hour. He can even fly and sing. He may produce 30 or more different sounds during a 10-minute span, including virtually any sound heard in nature and even human produced sounds like sirens and whistles. He often repeats a sound three or more times before going on to the next.

Not really a mimic after all

Strictly speaking, Northern Mockingbirds do not mimic sounds, in spite of their scientific name-L. Mimus , mimic; Gr. Polyglottos , many tongued. In the context of biology, mimicry implications deception as well as a benefit to the mimic that results from deception. Because mockingbirds do not seem to be deceiving other animals when they sing, it is preferable to say that they appropriate sounds into their songs.

On a plant note: mockingbirds go for chili pequins. They also like bread, suet and raisins.

Why Do Some Cats Bite When You Pet Them?

Many of us who are parents to cats notice that when we pet them, they sometimes turn around a bite our hands. Why do cats do that? Dog parents smugly state that their dogs wag their tails, pant and lick their hand. They claim that dogs don’t bite the hand that pets them. While this is not a competition between cats and dogs, I’ll give the dogs this one. I had a beautiful dog for many years (she passed away at 12) and she never bit me when I petted her. However, each and every cat (except one) has nipped at my hand.

So, why do cats bite the hand that pets them? As usual, I decided to do a little research to see if I can find the answer. From what I can tell, it looks like experts do not agree on the reasons for this pet-then-bite behavior, therefore many theories abound regarding what is called petting-induced aggression.

One theory is that unlike dogs, which are more social, petting may be something outside of a cat’s normal instinctive behavior. A suggested remedy is that cats need to be socialized to people as very young kittens. Even 5 minutes of human contact each day of a cat’s life up to 7 weeks of age will produce a much more trusting cat than those cats that did not have human contact until they were older than 7 weeks. However, this remedy does not explain all petting-induced aggressive behavior since properly socialized cats can still display this behavior. And this remedy does not help those of us who adopted adult cats.

Some experts theorize that a cat may bite once the petting exceeds her sensitivity threshold. While the cat enjoys the human contact at first, the repetitiveness of the petting becomes irritating and the cat turns and bites as a way of saying “Enough”. Another theory is that the petting not only causes irritation but that it may also cause static electricity or actual pain because of the cat’s nervous system. Or, sometimes the cat may have a pain in a particular area and your touch or even the belief that you will touch that area may trigger the aggressive behavior.

Sometimes cats may find petting so pleasurable that they actually fall asleep (with open eyes). If they wake up suddenly, they may not recognize that they are being petted and may believe that you are trying to confine them. Instinctively they may bite and run before they are fully aware that they were being petted. The final theory I found is one of control. Some cats need to control the situation where they determine when the petting starts and when it stops. What is perceived as petting-induced aggression is a way for the cat let you know who is in charge. I think behavior is more in line with my experience.

No matter the reason for the petting-induced aggression, there are some things that you can do to decrease the chance your cat will suddenly bite you while being petted.

It is important to find out if your cat has a medical condition that may cause pain when he is being petted, therefore take him to the vet for a thorough examination. Petting may cause the pain to worsen or the cat to become anxious that you may touch a painful area.

Like it or not, we just need to realize that some cats simply do no enjoy being petted. Cats are unique and while some cats enjoy human contact, love to cuddled and petted, others do not like human-initiated contact. These cats may enjoy some human closeness like sitting on your lap, but they don’t want to be picked up and petted. We need to understand that just like you cannot change the basic personality of humans with whom we interact, you will not be able to change the basic personality of your cat and need to accept him as he is.

While we may miss the warnings, cats seldom suddenly turn and bite. An observant cat parent will notice the following clues before the aggressive behavior starts:

• ears may go flat or back

• stiffening of the body

• twitching of the skin or tail

• dilated pupils

• a low growl

• unsheathing of the claws

If you see any of these signs, stop petting immediately and allow the cat to leave.

Once you are aware of the warning signs, you can begin to predict your cat’s petting tolerance level. Begin by timing from when you begin to pet your cat to the first instance of the warning signs. You can do this over the course of a week or so. Then, the next time you pet, make sure that you do not exceed this time limit. However, while timing may provide a good guide you still need to watch out for the warning clues.

You can also change the way in which you pet your cat. Some cats may prefer to receive short small strokes; others prefer to be scratched under the chin or between the ears. Not all cats enjoy whole-body petting. Try to pet you cat using the different methods. It should become pretty clear very quickly which methods are tolerable and which are not.

If your cat does bite during petting, please do not physically correct her as this may cause more aggression. However, you can reward your cat for not biting; you can give your cat a treat after each stroke she tolerates. Over time, your cat may associate the petting with treats and, barring any pain, may experience an increased petting tolerance threshold.

In the end, only you know your cat and while you can try all of the suggestions, you may have a cat that simply does not like to be petted. While it is hard to resist that fuzzy little belly, chin, neck, etc., you may simply have to find another more mutually enjoyable way of expressing your affection to your cat.

Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment for Erectile Dysfunction (Impotence)

Erectile dysfunction is known in lay terminology as impotence and relates to the inability to achieve and maintain adequate penile erection which can suitably perform the function of penetration and ejaculation. Erectile dysfunction can be due to various causes, some of which can be functional and temporary, while others may be organic and of more serious nature.

Anxiety, apprehension, stress, fears, physical and emotional fatigue and side effects from medication can cause temporary erectile dysfunction. Rest, simple counseling, and explanation of the normal anatomy and physiology of penile erection usually suffice to adequately treat such causes. More serious and organic causes of erectile dysfunction include high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, heart disease, diabetes, metabolic and neurological disorders, hormonal problems, dysfunction due to trauma and accidents, physical causes like inadequate blood flow to the penis or venous leakage, and as a natural process of ageing. These causes need to be treated specifically so as to bring about an improvement in erectile dysfunction and possibly cure it.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment can be judiciously utilized to completely treat erectile dysfunction. For the simple and functional causes of erectile dysfunction, in addition to counseling, Ayurvedic herbal medicines can be utilized to remove anxiety, stress, fatigue, and help the genitourinary organs to perform at an optimum level. Ayurvedic medicines can provide temporary sexual stimulation to tide over the problem and help the affected individual to adjust to, and overcome the situation.

High blood pressure needs to be treated aggressively so that the blood pressure can be controlled and at the same time, its long term complications can be avoided or minimized. Herbal medicines are equally effective in treating high cholesterol levels and normalizing the fat metabolism of the body. Heart disease too requires to be treated aggressively so as to reduce morbidity and mortality and also help the individual resume normal sexual activity at the earliest. Diabetes mellitus and other metabolic disorders need to be given specific treatment and kept strictly under control. Hormonal disorders too need to be treated according to the known cause for the condition.

Neurological disorders can cause a dysfunction of the pelvic nerves and related organs and thereby cause impotence. Structural or congenital defects as well as trauma and vehicle accidents can cause a combination of physical and neurological dysfunction of the penis in which there is an inadequate blood flow, which prevents desired erection for the requisite time of sexual performance. Even with adequate blood flow to the penis, if the valves in the veins draining blood from the penis are incompetent, this again hampers sexual performance since adequate erection cannot be maintained. Neurological or sphincter dysfunction can also cause an incomplete ejaculation, absence of ejaculation of semen, or a retrograde ejaculation. A few individuals may have a complete ejaculation, but with no detectable or viable sperms. This can be due to azoospermia or a total lack of sperm production resulting from absence of seminiferous tubules, hormonal disorders, or a complete mechanical block.

Herbal medicines which have a specific strengthening and corrective action on the brain, the spinal cord, and peripheral nerves are required to treat neurological deficits in order to treat erectile dysfunction. Alternatively, medicines which have a specific action on the blood flow to the penis or on the valves of the draining veins are required to provide specific corrective action for maintaining adequate erection. Treatment may also be required to stimulate the production of sperms, and to normalize proper and timely ejaculation.

Depending upon the known cause for the condition, most individuals affected with erectile dysfunction require treatment for periods ranging from a few weeks to a few months. Ayurvedic herbal treatment has a significant role to play in the successful management and treatment of erectile dysfunction.

Classical Criminology and Human Nature

Classical criminology, and its recent expression in rational choice theory, does not cut slack in terms of excusing, or otherwise mitigating, counterproductive and maladaptive social behaviors. An essential component is the assertion you are responsible and accountable for your actions. No matter how much you blame others, abuse substances, claim “victimization” or invoke the nebulous notions of alleged “mental illness”, classicists remain unmoved. From this historic school of thought, as well as its variations, the primary philosophical notion is that people are always responsible for their behaviors, especially when they choose to do harm to others.

From the arrogant greed of corporate criminal conspiracies, to the assassination of a public official, the perpetrator is self-motived, intentional and premeditated. The rationality of choice means purposeful decision-making, especially if you are a terrorist, or others like those in the news media and politicians, who seek to mitigate that by claims you have somehow mysteriously become “radicalized”. Criminality and human behavior in general, regardless of the criminal typology, from street crimes to commercial fraud, involve decisive “cost-benefit” analyses. The basis is gain minus the risk.

Motivational factors are complex and reside within the intricate thinking processes of the individual personality. While an act of particular cruelty may seem “irrational” to the public, such terroristic action is very rational to the instigator. Yet, in the reactivity of emotional self-interests as to “why” he or she committed the horrific crime, speculation devolves to dangerous notions for a simplistic answer. There are no easy answers.

Particularly frustrating are those quick to embrace an alternative “school of thought” within the schemes of the pseudosciences where one answer fits all. Other philosophical perspectives like psychology and sociology are good examples. From their own ranks of adherents, there are no specific concurrences on cause-effect explanations.

In a court of law in the U.S., where actual definitive evidence is required, both sides compete as to who has the most believable reason regarding behavioral issues. Outside a legal framework, many apply less than provable assertions about the causative factors involved in the nature of criminality. More so today, with increasing acceptance of paranormal phenomenon, many pursue external deterministic concepts.

From within the framework of those aligned to a classical criminological perspective, everyone, no matter who they are, remains answerable for every aspect of his or her behavior. Regardless of socio-economic status, political “aristocracy”, or corporate “oligarchy”, the primary societal parameter is that no one is above the law. Yet, the gross arrogance of a gluttonous culture claims otherwise. Many feel a sense of entitlement because, in their minds, they are somehow more special.

It might be the alleged “expert” from academia, who claims a certain school of thought has found all the answers to life’s mysteries. In their smug piety, safe and secure in the ivory towers of “higher education”, they appeal to their own deceptions. Then again, another claimant to personal exception might be “landed gentry” or upper social status. By wealth and materiality, they believe they are “different”. Still though, others claim their “entitled status” to elected office, or even the presidency.

There are no excuses for the abusive behaviors inflicted upon others. People are very capable of being dangerously aggressive, predatory and malevolent creatures. With calculation and malice aforethought, and intent, everyone is capable of anything in order to get his or her way. People are extraordinarily hedonistic. Human nature has not changed very much in the history of the human species. Given our inclination to self-destructive behavior, we are likely increasing the rapidity by which our devolution will hasten eventual extinction. Counterproductive processes are underway.

There are no justifications, pretentious alibis, or make-believe paranormal mitigations, regardless of theories to the contrary, that alleviate the accountability for the evils people do. While others may sternly disagree with this perspective, as various fields of the pseudosciences might assert, people makes choices, both good and evil. In the decision making process, cost versus benefit is elemental. What really matters is whether the individual is transforming by becoming a more differentiated and mature personality.

Self-evolving individuality requires the courage of personal liberation for one’s thinking processes, in pursuit of a higher ascendency for thought and action. Maturity assumes a profound growth in responsibility for personal choices and subsequent behaviors. An evolving individual is labors diligently for selfless personal growth. For him or her, the personal quest spans a lifetime. From grown up thinking processes, he or she embraces accountability for the responsibility of personal transformation.

Unfortunately, the sad state of affairs slants in the direction that colludes a sleight of hand, in the never-ending deceptions of human behavior. Unevolved and self-centered motivations promulgate the easy mitigations of unscientific conjecture that fosters intentional gullibility in deterministic simplicity. From academia to commercial and political oligarchies of power and control, for the satiation of economic self-interests, careers and industries have been constructed around the psychobabbles of misdirection. While tacitly, behind the scenes, some might decry the flagrant and unjustified fallacies that sell hasty generalizations reinforced by emotion reactivity, change is futile.

Too late, the devolution process continues a regression of the human species into the macabre anti-thinking of arrogant selfishness. There is an excuse for everything, a pill to cure anything and a “diagnosis” to excuse horrendous and torturous behaviors. Whether pontificating about a perpetrator’s upbringing, bad parenting, neighborhood, poverty of “broken windows”, and any other externality of “cause and effect”, the majority of contemporary explanations do not solve the crisis of a faltering global civilization. Several noted physicists and futurist have asserted the eventual demise of the human species. Nonetheless, we come up with excuses to blame someone or something.

However, we have “experts” that frequently appear alongside smugly self-righteous newscasters, and explain the alleged mitigating factors, from assassinations to genocide, and commercial fraud to political corruption. The fascinating prospect about most “experts”, especially in the so-called hallowed halls of academia, is that they never actually were practitioners who plied their craft in the real world. One might ponder, how do they “know” so much, when they do not share any significant experience in the reality of human interactivities? Whoa, that should be scary. However, it is not.

As suggested earlier, in the realm of the pseudosciences, anything is possible from a theoretical viewpoint, especially as some attempt to articulate a biased perspective. From theory to belief, mainstream acceptance and political acquiescence demonstrates complicity across a wide audience. Politically, the judicial, legislative and executive branches of government, partly in courtrooms, allow the viability of alleged “expertise”. Even if there is no scientific validation, the proof of questionable behavioral theories is readily considered. In an adversarial system of jurisprudence, for instance, “experts” on both sides can offer “expert opinion” testimony as “evidence”.

Absent the science, as in fingerprints, DNA, toxicology, etc., which opinion is valid? After all, both sides in a controversy get to claim and otherwise assert the philosophy of their school of thought as though it reflects confirmed scientific authenticity. Subsequently, a panel of laypersons, a jury, gets to decide whom they believe. Such manifestations of speculation are often treated as if they are true beyond any doubt and to the exclusion of all other possibilities. Frequently, adherents of one of the interpretations will argue vehemently with opposing views as to which or what is the truth.

When it comes to human behavior, no one has all the answers, and no certainty as to anything close to solutions. To the criminology classicists, particularly the practitioners (i.e. police, corrections, probation officers, etc.), outside the schemes of academia, human nature is simultaneously good and evil, through an intricate psychodynamic weaving of complex personality. From the basis of this theoretical construct, humans are rational individuals, often hiding behind masks of deception. Yet, to cover the individuality of malevolent intentions, many conceal their biases within a framework of illusions.

Nonetheless, for some human beings, they have cleverly invented a maze of mitigations or excuses. By extraordinary means, from academia, commercial, and medical enterprises, to political collusions, the smoke and mirrors of promulgates public deception. As to the frauds of misrepresentation of “pseudoscience” versus hard science, the public’s gullibility chooses easy acceptance as to the misdirection. While some claims hide behind an array of terms, labels and “diagnoses”, the scientific efficacy remains unsubstantial. For the classical adherents however, people are supremely capable of exercising the scary notion of volition, or freedom to choose.

The frightening prospect of accountability in the exercise of free will troubles many theorists. As a result, the multifaceted U.S. “criminal justice systems”, reflect many influences from both schools of thought. At the beginning, the process to investigate and arrest, prosecute and sentence is primarily from a classical model, strongly supported by evidence-based procedures. In the next, phases, post-sentencing, so called correctional facilities become predisposed to “rehabilitation” leanings. Misbehavior, in terms of criminality, is the result of other causes external to the criminal. Predisposition to criminal behavior becomes the passageway by which illegality is the result of the typical excuses. These include poverty, family, neighborhood and abuse.

For the classical perspective, no one gets away with excuses. In fact, mitigations are virtually non-concerns. What matters is the unlawful behavior. The classicist asserts that everyone is free to make choices, regardless of personal circumstances, which challenges the “positivism” of the deterministic conceptions of culpability. As to perhaps thirty other “schools of thought”, that considers a person “hardwired”, “predestined”, exceptionally influenced by prior “causes”, such as “mental illness”, is not within the socio-economic framework of the classic view of criminality. Personal responsibility is of immediate consideration and eventual sanction by certainty of punishment.

Opposing views would argue and protest differently. Nonetheless, swift retribution is necessary along an ethical continuum of moral justification. By reason and logic of capable capacity, the perpetrator, regardless of high standing or communal connections, is responsible for every act of malevolent commission inflicted upon others. There are no exceptions, particularly as pertains to wealth, power and political connections. Especially, in those cases of defendant affluence, the upper reaches of oligarchy receive no special dispensation as to occupancy in a penal facility. Of all groups of criminals, the rich should share the same accommodations alongside the not so wealthy.

For every human, irrespective of academic allusion, social rank, or theoretical speculation, intends any given action based upon the self-interests of a personal decision-making process. By whatever means, to augment and further clarify the choices to be made, subsequent actions weigh in the balance between gain and risk, productivity and loss, and ultimately essential satiation. Convenient and comfortable utility to reinforce the thinking processes, as well as express that, which is necessary to personal enrichment, encompasses individual selfishness. The rationality, as seen by others less predisposed to observe their own shortcomings, may dismiss the reasoning behind counterproductive actions. Other schools of thought have tried to dismiss any particular notion of one’s actions as freely chosen. Instead, by clever diversion, excuses are many.

Regardless of deterministic insistence, classical admonitions assert the primacy of free choice. Inventions of a wide spectrum of “mental illness” does not lesson or mitigate individual responsibility for malevolent actions. Oriented toward the goals of self-gratification and personal enrichment, at the expense of others, illicit and anti-communal actions are to be dealt with in equal retribution regardless of socio-economic status.

Whether by smug piety in amative arrogance of corrupt politicians, or corporate moguls who exploit others and the environment, their anti-social maladaptation are intentionally calculated. Cruel behavior is nothing new for the human species, and not much has changed in a couple hundred thousand years. Sure, many would like to believe there is such a thing as “civilization”. In addition, there is the mournful refrain, almost whining tone frequently in the news media, about something called a “civilized society”. Yet, that is a biased misrepresentation of one or more individual perceptions.

The real world is a decidedly dangerous place. Treachery and oppression are disguised and camouflaged by deceptions. In order to satiate a gullible public, pacify large segments of the population, and foster a climate of irresponsible dependence, pseudoscience can be sold as “science”. Furthermore, to ensure consumer marketing, sales and consumption, why not invent all kinds of diagnoses, and makeup something called “mental illness”. As to the metaphorical reference regarding thinking, the “mind” reflects a complex internal infrastructure not easily quantified.

Counterproductive actions that harm people and environments are perpetrated from a premeditated and intention design. It does not matter if the malevolent individual is a corporatist, politician or street thug, the malice in thinking follows similar processes from thought to action. The most important ingredient is in the decision-making that devolves to the adverse nature of choices. Offenders understand they are harming others, but decide for their on enrichment to do it anyway.

Selfish, self-focused, manipulative thinking, entitlement, and whiny “victimization”, characterize additional elements of immature behaviors. Being self-centered and exploitive could be descriptive of most people in general. Regardless of the “disguise” one wears in public, there is always the hidden dimension behind the “mask”. From assassins to white-collar embezzlers, murderers and terrorists, motivational factors follow an interpersonal trajectory of power, control and domination over others. In the aftermath of a calamitous event, it is very easy and notoriously simplistic to speculate on comforting deterministic factors outside the perpetrator. Criminal justice personnel, many who should know better, like politicians and the press, rush to hasty unsubstantiated conclusions. What a person chooses to think and do is part of their purposely calculated freedom of choice. Inanimate objects do not make people do things.

Lifeless, non-living, inorganic things do not make people do illicit and dastardly deeds. Humans are all too capable to commit atrocious acts of personal culpability freely, readily and with serious malevolent intentions. Similarly, the internet does not force people to do “evil” actions. Likewise, vast innovations in “technology” do not cause people to carryout cyber intrusions, swindles, and sordid illegalities.

Terrorism “radicalization”, so easily tossed around by pundits and others who should know better, does not force people to commit terroristic criminalities. Additionally, the usual suspect scapegoats, like “peer pressure”, “bullying”, poverty or bad parenting, cause someone to “snap”. Unfortunately, the list of deceptive diversions goes on, and eventually collides with a number theoretical claims, sometimes called diagnoses. All of which reflects someone’s philosophical perspective.

Nevertheless, if you need to feel better about yourself, others, society, etc., reassured by trouble-free answers and convenient conjecture absent scientific validation, then embrace any aspect of the pseudosciences you wish. If you are fearful that your school of thought might be in error if challenged by opposing perspectives, you are free to be as defensive and resentment to any extent desired. There will be opposition.

You can believe anything you want, no matter how deficient the facts are. Such divisiveness and condescension happens every day, from academia to the courtroom. Irrational causal connections arise in every facet of social interaction, as many clamor to justify nebulous notions claiming to answer complex behavioral questions. Often overlooked is the ethical responsibility of the individual adherent for implementing honest, straightforward evidence based strategies in problem-solving processes.

For the classical criminologist, from the non-deterministic viewpoint presented here, it is not the environment, family conditions, society, community and so forth, which are definitive precursor factors causing criminal behavior. Everyone makes choices and determines their eventual behavioral responses. It does not matter whether corporate pirate or international terrorist and everything in between, responsibility, and ultimate accountability, rests fully with the perpetrator. From corrupt politicians to Wall Street “gangsters”, premeditation configures with malevolent intentions to commit illegalities that harm others. A particular school of thought can argue a certain philosophical perspective to mitigate, excuse or otherwise rationalize the limited culpability.

However, in the end, the absence of sure, swift and certain punishment, regardless of socio-economic status, political connections, alleged “mental illness”, or assorted excuses, hastens the regression of the human species. In furtherance of social decay, a devolving society bent on extinction collectively rationalizes any possibility for aberrant behavior. Every effort to ensure the criminal’s responsibility, and subsequent incapacitation, remain essential to safeguarding societal stability.

Unfortunately, in an alleged modern society and so-called civilized culture, which are actually not the case, counterproductive actions insist upon different results. With the varied schools of thought perpetrated by various pseudosciences, the probability of change and transformation of humankind is likely too late. The illusions fostered by non-scientific instigations in egregious fallacies of inference, contravene and stifle productive countermeasures for realistic appraisals of human malevolence.

Criminals come in all sizes, shapes and severity of harm they inflict. They corporatists who exploit the economic system, and politicians who abuse the political systems they manipulate. Their ranks span a spectrum of self-indulgent hedonistic armed robbers, to greedy telemarketers who fled the mail and internet with hideous advertisements. The scope, extent and nature of their criminality are contingent on a “cost-risk-reward” premeditation. Arguments as to the essence of causality are frivolous and unproductive when such claims devolve to the externality of deterministic sources.

An abundance of “experts” from many fields of study claim to know the “single bullet” factor that solves the proverbial “why” question. Why did he or she do the heinous deed? Politicians, pundits, proselytes and the majority of the public, rush to hasty generalizations, based on a specious conjecture, to answer that solitary question. Yet, that part of the cause-effect equation cannot find easy solution. Who knows and furthermore who cares? More importantly, what happened, what is an appropriate sanction, and what restores the imbalance caused by the harm?

Of the rudimentary components of who, what, where, when, why and how, in the criminal justice rubric, it is the “what” that outweighs the “why”. As regards criminality, knowing the “why” infers invasive actions by the state to oppress civil liberties for the sake of “public safety and security”. That is the clever ruse of “wannabe scientific” fields to foster deceptions in order to sell products, services and specious theories.

To that perspective, of the nature of specious or hallow or otherwise deceptive inferences, contemporary conjecture confuses the spectrum of critical analysis. Deterministic afflictions, “hard wired” cerebral fixations and alleged DNA malfunctions, among others, assert a non-science stream of excuses for perpetrators. Beyond the control and capability of the individual, the criminal as “victim”, the pseudosciences of positivistic heritage continue to claim a variety of nebulous notions. As conclusive explanations for the mitigation of criminality, many claim the sufficiency of easy “answers”, absent scientific validity. Yet, the mystery of human nature continues.

Nonetheless, in an age of “anti-intellectualism”, where serious thought is weighed between emotional assertion and factual evidence, public policy is adversely affected by the misguidance of competing interests. As to the classical philosophy, everyone is responsible for his or her thinking processes and subsequent actions taken. Whether classical, neo-classical, rational choice, or seductions to adversity and maladaptation, the centrality of belief remains in the notion of one’s freedom to choose. To that end, without interventions of self-serving excuses, accountability is essential.

To the classical criminologist, and in particular, those who are real world practitioners, there is no viability for the influence of ideological mysticism, superstition and anything purporting to be of supernatural interference as deterministic factors. Yet, among the pseudosciences, there are inclinations of some schools of thought that come very close to the edge of such unsubstantiated “magical thinking”. By their insistence upon that which is not well established by scientific validation, claiming positions of science, where scientific provability is untenable, commits damage to reason and rationality.

Criminality comes from within the individual and everyone has the capacity to commit criminal acts. It could be argued, depending on a definition of “criminality”, that everyone at one time or another has committed some type of criminal behavior. To think that through, and consider the myriad social rules, regulations, ordinances, statutes, and so on, a number of possibilities exist in many aspects of daily living. From assaultive threats, to hate speech, to discrimination and all manner of thievery, people choose their communal disruptions. Humans misbehave, not objects or things. Fundamentally, rationality in choosing behavioral actions is based upon psychodynamic complexity not easily answered or quantified in precise and definitive ways.

In spite of contemporary illusions, reinforced by magical thinking as hope springs eternal, the realization is that there will always be “anti-social” people who will do “evil things” to others. As such, in order to salvage the viability of public safety, order maintenance, and social ascendancy, the classical or rational perspective on the criminal behavior must expand in more realistic, rational and methodical progressions. Criminality, as an aspect of human nature, with its attendant complexity will not change dramatically, regardless of the myriad of pseudoscientific assertions.

Mitigations to the contrary of sure, swift and certain actions, will continue to circumvent every effort to control or otherwise interdict maladaptive choices. In post-modern American society, erroneous beliefs characterized by admonitions of politicians, pundits and other self-serving interests, in emotional reactivity to heinous acts, represent futile energies at the expense of those victimized.

Recently, in the sensationalized reporting of various murderous incidents, calls for more laws, increased “mental health” expenditures, excessive labeling by way of questionable “diagnoses”, and a range of sectarian ideologies that over-ride rational applications, hasten the demise of the human species. In the wake of terroristic incidents, emotion driven pretenses to journalism stir the “false cause” fallacies of inference, whereby anything is rationalized for the sake of simplistic answers.

While career politicians pander the public to ensure easy pacification with hasty and unsubstantiated conclusions, others call for the collectivist notion of “national unity” and “peace and harmony”, by offering weak, empty and feeble responses. Alternatively, most simply whine and complain without proposing serious, well-studied, and logically sound solutions to deal with complicated societal interactions. Meanwhile, some academicians who have never served or practiced in the real world continue to promote their “expertise” for a particular philosophy assumed “scientific”.

Feel good proclamations only fulfill the satiation of the moment to appease emotional reactivity, as opposed to thoughtful coherent and genuine actions. The never-ending debate regarding criminality, in which “good vs. evil” considers “nature vs. nurture”, often regresses to the shallowness of deterministic factors. Sometimes, the “single factor” issue drives misdirection instead of investigating the reality of choice. Within the scope of classical criminology, choice requires accountability and that is scary.
