High School Wrestling: Diet and Supplements

The nutritional plan that a wrestler follows can be a factor in his performance. Different foods supply different nutrients to our bodies. Although food is the most important element in your nutritional plan, supplements can also be a beneficial addition. Some wrestlers desire to lose weight. Some wrestlers do not need to lose weight. Regardless of whether or not a wrestler needs to lose weight, all wrestlers want to be strong and have sufficient energy.

Protein (4 calories per gram)

The body uses protein to perform many functions. I believe most of you know that one of protein’s main functions is building and repairing body tissues (e.g. muscle tissue). Proteins are composed of amino acids. Essential amino acids are amino acids that the body cannot make and must be provided by one’s diet. A complete protein supplies all of the essential amino acids. Most complete proteins come from animal sources. We are talking about meat, fish, fowl, milk, cheese, and eggs. Why is protein important for a wrestler? Wrestling is strenuous and can be catabolic (i.e. break down muscle tissue).

How much protein do you need? Some studies have suggested that athletes require more protein than a sedentary person does. Your diet should get about 25% of its calories from protein.

Good Sources of Protein:

  • lean beef
  • boneless, skinless chicken breast
  • lean pork
  • fish without breading
  • turkey
  • milk
  • yogurt
  • cheese
  • cottage cheese
  • eggs

An Interesting Fact about Cottage Cheese:

Cottage cheese contains a large amount of the milk protein called casein. In fact, cottage cheese is almost 100% unadulterated casein. Casein digests slowly in the body. Casein supplies a slow trickle of amino acids after being ingested. Therefore, if you eat some cottage cheese before bed you can receive a slow trickle of amino acids (i.e. protein) into your body throughout the night that could be anti-catabolic (i.e. prevent the breakdown of muscle tissue) while muscle tissue is being repaired during sleep.

Regarding Eggs:

Eggs have a Biological Value (BV) of 100. Our bodies utilize the protein contained in eggs very well. Even egg whites have a BV of 88. I don’t recommend eating only egg whites even if they are lower in fat and calories. I think nature made eggs to be eaten with the yolk and white as a package. A large whole egg contains about six grams of protein. Eggs are nutrient dense. If you’re concerned about calories, you can poach eggs or fry them in a non-stick pan. There are liquid egg white products if you prefer. Remember that it’s probably not a good idea to eat raw eggs like Rocky Balboa.

Regarding Beans:

Beans are interesting because they can be a good source of protein and carbohydrates. Beans also supply fiber that can help you feel full if you are trying to diet. Beans and rice are a popular combination for supplying a meal that includes all or close to all of the essential amino acids. Some experts consider the combination of beans and rice to be a complete protein.

A guy named Tim Ferriss advocates something he calls a “slow-carb” diet for weight loss. Beans and legumes are an important part of this diet plan. For example, one meal might consist of beef, pinto beans, and mixed vegetables. Another meal might consist of eggs, black beans, and mixed vegetables. The diet doesn’t include carbohydrates like breads, cereals, and fruits so it’s not really a good diet for a wrestler. I just thought it was interesting as a weight loss option and because of its reliance on beans and legumes.

Carbohydrates (4 calories per gram)

Carbohydrates are the body’s preferred source of fuel. In other words, carbohydrates provide you with energy. Wrestling practice and competition obviously require a lot of energy. Therefore, make sure to include plenty of carbohydrates in your diet. Carbohydrates get broken down into glucose and other sugars. Glucose is your brain’s preferred fuel source. Much of this glucose gets stored in your muscles in the form of glycogen. Glycogen is then used as a source of energy. Your diet should derive about 60% of its calories from carbohydrates. There are complex carbohydrates like breads and cereals and simple carbohydrates like fruit. Educate yourself.

Good Sources of Carbohydrates:

  • breads
  • bagels
  • muffins
  • pancakes
  • cereals
  • rice
  • pasta
  • potatoes
  • sweet potatoes
  • fruits
  • vegetables

When I wrestled in high school, I ate a lot of carbohydrates. For instance, I actually ate a lot of rice cakes. I figured I could eat five rice cakes for about the same number of calories in one can of soda. I know you probably think they taste like Styrofoam but I became used to them. I also ate many potatoes without butter, salt, or any other condiments. I ate many bowls of plain oatmeal. I became accustomed to eating a simple diet. Of course, I still had a Pop-Tart or candy bar occasionally.

In Regards to Fruits and Vegetables:

Why eat a candy bar when you could eat two large apples for about the same number of calories? That was my thinking back in high school when I was dieting for wrestling. Fruits and vegetables are often fat free, low in calories, high in water content, high in fiber, and rich in nutrients like antioxidants. I ate many servings of green beans back then. I had an apple or two almost every day. I could eat a large amount of food for a small amount of calories.

Fat (9 calories per gram)

Fats provide twice the number of calories per gram as proteins and carbohydrates. Therefore, you don’t want to consume too much fat. However, you should not eliminate fat entirely from your diet. Your diet should derive about 15% of it’s calories from fats. Fats do many important things in our bodies. Fats build healthy cell membranes. Fats help to make hormones like testosterone. Your brain is approximately sixty percent fat. Some fats can help make your skin smooth and healthy. Moreover, fat cushions your body organs.

You’ve probably heard about the many types of fats such as saturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, hydrogenated, and trans fats. Dr. Eric Serrano believes that saturated, polyunsaturated, and monounsaturated fats are all important. However, he recommends avoiding hydrogenated fats altogether. You may want to research fats and essential fatty acids. You may also want to perform an online search for Dr. Eric Serrano, Udo Erasmus, Dr. Bill Sears, and Dr. Joseph Mercola in regards to healthy fats.

Some Good Sources of Fat to Consider:

  • extra virgin olive oil
  • flax oil
  • fish oil
  • cod liver oil
  • peanut butter
  • nuts
  • virgin coconut oil
  • avocados

Don’t be afraid to eat whole eggs, lean red meat, salmon, tuna, and even a bit of butter occasionally. Coconut oil is a saturated fat. However, if you do some research regarding virgin coconut oil you will find out it that it has many potential health benefits. In addition, remember to limit or avoid hydrogenated fats and trans fats.

I was advised at a wrestling camp to try to eat a diet of about 80% healthy food and 20% unhealthy food during wrestling season. I guess they figured nobody could eat healthy 100% of the time. That may be sound advice.

In the book Blood in the Cage, author L. Jon Wertheim writes about Pat Miletich, a former wrestler and former UFC champion. Pat and most of his fighters follow something called Miletich’s “fighter’s diet” when a competition is drawing near. This diet consists mainly of oatmeal, eggs, and skinless, boneless chicken.

Fast Food Tips:

  • Have water or milk instead of pop
  • Have grilled chicken in sandwiches and soft shell tacos
  • Have grilled chicken breast, lean roast beef, and lean ham on sub sandwiches
  • Have a garden salad with minimal dressing
  • Have a baked potato without butter, sour cream, or cheese
  • Have a small hamburger without cheese, bacon, or mayonnaise
  • Avoid deep-fried, breaded, and batter-dipped foods

Keep in mind:

  • One pound equals approximately 3,500 calories
  • If you cut 500 calories a day from your diet you will lose approximately one pound per week
  • A simple way to determine the number of calories you need to eat per day to lose weight is to take your current bodyweight times 10 (e.g. 150 X 10 = 1,500 calories)
  • A simple way to determine the number of calories you need to eat per day to maintain weight is to take your current bodyweight times 15 (e.g. 130 X 15 = 1,950 calories)
  • A calorie-counting book and a food scale may be helpful; read nutrition labels
  • Try to avoid empty calories like you find in soda pop and candy
  • Keep your pre-competition meal light and carbohydrate based

I don’t recommend cutting weight or starving. You need food to fuel your body. In addition, drink plenty of fluids so that do not become dehydrated. If you choose to lose weight, do it slowly and carefully. You don’t want to lose muscle tissue and strength. In addition, you need energy for hard practices.

If you are Vegetarian or Vegan:

Strength coach Mike Mahler is a vegan (i.e. eats no animal products whatsoever) and yet he is big and strong. Some staples in his diet include nuts, seeds, peanut butter, almond butter, beans, lentils, vegetables, coconut milk, healthy fats like olive oil, and rice protein powder.

Pre-Competition Meal:

As far as your pre-competition meal goes, keep it familiar. That is not a time to try new foods. Keep it light and carbohydrate based so you have energy. A heavier meal with more fat will be slower to digest. On the other hand, your pre-competition meal should be something that you enjoy. I think I read somewhere that boxer Sugar Ray Leonard liked to have a cheeseburger before a big fight. I wouldn’t recommend that, but it seemed to work fine for him. Olympic champion speed skater Bonnie Blair’s pre-race meal was always a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I had a friend in high school that had one of his highest scoring basketball games after a meal of several bowls of chili. Personally, I always liked to have pancakes before a competition. For some people that would probably sit too heavy in their stomach. I liked to have jelly sandwiches and Pop-Tarts at wrestling tournaments if I needed something between matches. Find what works for you.

Supplements to Consider:

  • Multivitamin – to cover anything you might miss in your diet
  • Meal Replacement Products (MRPs) – shakes like Myoplex and Met-Rx provide protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals if you don’t have time to eat a meal
  • Whey protein – whey protein is absorbed quickly by the body and is ideal for a post workout shake
  • Glutamine – may help you maintain muscle if dieting; improves immune function
  • Creatine monohydrate – supplies energy to your muscles; make sure you stay hydrated if you use this supplement
  • Branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) – may help with recovery and repair
  • Inosine – may give you greater endurance by supporting the regeneration of ATP
  • HMB – may help slow the breakdown of muscle tissue (i.e. anti-catabolic)
  • Beta-alanine – may help improve your work capacity via it’s ability to buffer lactic acid
  • Caffeine – can increase energy and alertness

You probably don’t need to supplement at all. Eat a healthy diet with a variety of foods and stay hydrated. That will do more for you than any supplement ever can. In addition, supplements can be costly. Moreover, some supplements work for one wrestler and not for another. Therefore, if you choose to use supplements be cautious and be careful. Do some research about the potential benefits and dangers of any supplement before using it.

I am not a nutritionist or dietitian. I am not an expert on dietary supplements. Read articles and books pertaining to nutrition and supplements. I have simply provided a rough guide to help you get started. Remember that you need fuel for your body to function well. That fuel is food. Therefore, make sure that make smart dietary choices on your path to wrestling success.

Lose Weight With Clubbells – Ancient Exercise Tool For Timeless Fat Loss Results

It seems with every passing day a new fat loss method is unveiled. But there’s very little which is truly new under the sun. And many of these novel fat loss solutions are nothing more than clever packaging–at best–or pure snake oil salesmanship–at worst.

But there are simple tools that have endured for centuries and work as well today as they did generations ago. Thankfully, these ancient tools are resurfacing as people seek simple and elegant solutions for their fitness needs.

The Clubbell stands head and shoulders above the rest of these simple tools for its versatility and its effectiveness. Throughout the ages, the humble club has been a ubiquitous means of self-preservation, warfare, and then later physical conditioning.

For anyone looking to shed fat, as a stand-alone training tool the Clubbell can’t be beat. Optimal fat loss requires several elements that are subject to an order of importance.

Nutrition

The first requirement of fat loss is of course appropriate nutrition. That is beyond the scope of this discussion, but suffice it to say that eating a diet which promotes the maintenance of muscle while dipping into fat stores for energy is a prerequisite. And here’s a hint, anything our prehistoric ancestors used to hunt with their clubs or pull from the ground would probably be a good place to start.

Preserve Muscle

Apart from bringing down game, Clubbells can’t help you with your nutrition. But once you get into the other pieces of the fat loss hierarchy, the Clubbell comes into its own. The most important exercise consideration for fat loss is the preservation of lean mass. This is what will allow you to use freed energy from fat as fuel. If you lose lean mass while dieting, you greatly reduce your chances of success.

There are many Clubbell exercises of a “grinding” nature which are perfect for building or maintaining muscle on a fat loss diet. Good options are the Clubbell Flag Press and the Clubbell Barbarian Squat. A YouTube search will yield results for both these examples. I recommend sets lasting between 45 and 75 seconds for optimal muscle growth potential. Choose four to five exercises which cover your entire body and major movement patterns and do each for 2-3 sets. Perform this workout three times a week.

Stoke the Fat Burning Fires

The next rung down on our fat loss hierarchy will be high intensity energy system work. Some people call this interval training, others metabolic conditioning. The important thing is to perform intervals of high intensity work in the range of 8-10 on a scale of 10 for Rate of Perceived Effort (this concept is from the Circular Strength Training system). Performing such all-out work for periods of between 30 seconds and four minutes, taking rest periods of between 10 & 90 seconds, will stimulate your metabolism into high gear for as much as 72 hours post workout. This type of training can also blunt hunger, which is always a plus when trying to lose fat.

Putting exercises such as the demanding Clubbell Swipe and Clubbell Clockwork Squat into a circuit will help you achieve this high level of intensity. Again, a YouTube search will direct you to demonstrations of both these exercises.

Burn Off Extra Calories

And last on our hierarchy of fat loss training priorities – important only if we are implementing the other two – will be longer, steady state training, sometimes referred to as cardio or aerobic training. A long time ago, I gave up running. Not only is it hard on the body, but can get very tedious after awhile. But I don’t have to give up on cardio. I can get a great session of steady state exercise using my Clubbells.

By doing a single arm exercise, and switching back and forth form one arm to the other at regular intervals, I can keep my heart rate up and my fat burning machines stoked without running up against muscular failure. Good choices for this are the Clubbell Swing and the Clubbel Mill. Again, a YouTube search should bear fruit.

A Tool For the Times

Amazingly, this one simple tool can provide a full spectrum of fat loss benefits. No wonder it has endured the ages. And in these uncertain economic times, versatile tools which can take the place of expensive gym memberships are especially attractive. So if you are looking to drop some fat, the Clubbell just may be the perfect tool for your efforts.

Hospital Antibacterial Soap Benefits

What is a hospital antibacterial soap? It is one of the cleaning products that are used by consumers and staff at hospitals that have antibacterial chemical agents that cam kill bacteria, but they do not kill viruses. Triclosan is a common ingredient on most liquid, hand and body soaps. Some of the studies have concluded that when you simply wash your hands thoroughly with plain soap, bacteria are sufficiently reduced. But more extensive studies have shown that hospital antibacterial soap removes more bacteria than just by washing with water and an ordinary soap. And hospitals can not afford to let bacteria run wild in their wards. Antimicrobial soap and frequent hand washing are keys to reducing bacterial infections.

Hospital antibacterial soap is very important in controlling the spread of bacterial in a hospitals and reduces the risk of getting infection. The benefit of washing hands using an antibacterial soap has been proven in obstetrics, in operating rooms, in intensive care units and in doctor’s offices as well as in every health care setting. Hand washing has been proven effective in preventing such common infections in little children at home and in school.

When is the proper time to wash your hands? Children and adults too must be taught to wash their hands at critical moments. They must wash their hands after changing a diaper, before eating and handling food, before feeding children and defecating. Remember to wash not only with water but with hospital antibacterial soap and it takes about 15 to 20 seconds to do that. Do you know that washing with soil and water is more effective that washing only with water alone?

Hospital anti-microbial soap is more effective in reducing infections by some organisms. The germ killing soap can get rid and kill much of the bacteria that usually lives on our skin and can protect us from getting and spreading infection.

Doctors and nurses use hospital antibacterial soap even in their homes and teach their children to wash their hands regularly with antibacterial liquid soaps and instant hand sanitizers. When they teach their children to effectively wash their hands especially with hospital antibacterial soap, they will have lesser visits to their doctor. Parents will save on drugs and doctors visits when their kids are healthy. Kids will not have to miss school and not get ill that often. Schools and hospitals with regular hand washing programs have fewer cases of infections on students, patients and hospital staff.

The researchers found out that bacteria from people’s hands have not changed generally in recent years. But it is said that health care professionals compared to the general population have fewer bacteria. That is probably because they pay more attention on washing their hands regularly than us and use hospital grade antibacterial soaps at work and in their homes.

How to wash your hands:

First you should wet your hands with warm water. If there is no warm water then tap water will do. Then apply a hospital antibacterial liquid soap to your hands and do not put your hands under the running water yet. Give at least 20 seconds of rubbing your hands with hospital antibacterial soap. Then rinse under the running water.

Rydoexpress stocks the major brands of antibacterial soap on the market today including Gojo, Kimberly Clark, Kimcare, Johnson Diversey, Lever 2000, Dial, Colgate Palmolive, Softsoap, Lurosep, and more.

Trampolines in Winter – Protecting Your Equipment

Trampolines are an endless source of entertainment and exercise. There’s just something about being able to jump high into the air, only to bounce right back up again that has attracted kids of all ages ever since the trampoline was invented in the 1930’s. Since that fateful day, the trampoline has been used for many things, including soldier training in World War II, physical rehabilitation for those that have had operations or injuries to their legs, and weight loss workouts for those that need a low impact way to burn calories. No matter what your trampoline means to you, it’s important to make sure that you protect all the trampoline parts, especially in winter time.

Mini trampolines, also called rebounders, are the only kind of trampoline that can be safely used in the house. This is because the mini trampoline has such a small surface area, and can only be used to produce a bounce that is a couple of feet up in the air, at most. However, when you start talking about the larger recreational trampolines, which can be anywhere from eight to sixteen feet in diameter, it’s necessary to use them outdoors where there will be no danger of hitting your head on the ceiling or falling into potentially dangerous furniture.

Keeping your trampoline outside is safer, but it does present come challenges when it comes to taking good care of all the trampoline parts. The trampoline mat in particular can break down quickly when it is repeatedly exposed to rain, UV sunlight, and cold. If you’re going to be keeping your trampoline outdoors in the winter time, it’s necessary to make some storage adjustments so that you can continue to use it year after year.

When you’re getting ready to winterize your trampoline, be sure to check the trampoline cover and trampoline pad for any holes, rips, tears, or frayed spots. It doesn’t make sense to cover the structure if the cover will just let in the weather anyway! Inspect the entire trampolines for parts that might be damaged or rusty, and replace them before storing. Spray the trampoline pad with a vinyl protection spray that will help it to resist any moisture that builds up while it’s in storage. Use bungee cords or rope to make sure the cover and the trampoline it have no chance of blowing away. If a heavy snowfall is likely, you might think about removing the trampoline mat before you place the cover.

How to Make Sperm Thick – Ejaculate More and Thicker Semen Naturally

Your semen is an index of your sexual health. All your body secretions are affected by your diet and it is no different in case of sperm or semen that you produce. Thick sperm is always better as compared to thin and watery semen in terms of fertility and virility. Not only this, it is also important to keep in mind that most women find large volume of thick semen visually stimulating.

In order to make your sperm thick, make sure you get all the minerals and vitamins that your body needs to produce healthy semen. Zinc, magnesium and selenium are extremely important minerals as far as your semen health is concerned. You can well imagine the importance of zinc by the fact that almost 70% of zinc in your body is actually contained in your semen.

Foods that contain zinc include oysters, red meat, poultry, bananas etc.,

Besides proper diet, physical activity is also extremely important to ensure good semen health and quality. Not only this, you must also try to reduce stress in life. Can I Become a Surrogate Mother if I Have Herpes?

As a two time gestational surrogate mother and an author, as well as having many friends in the surrogacy community, I often hear women ask this question. Herpes is very common today, and does not automatically disqualify you from becoming a surrogate mother.

All clinics will require potential gestational surrogate mothers to undergo extensive physical and psychological testing prior to becoming approved as an acceptable carrier. Part of this testing is complete STD panels for both the surrogate and her partner.

Some clinics and intended parents will automatically disqualify any woman as a surrogate who has Herpes, but this is not a hard and fast rule. With proper arrangements, Herpes can become a non-issue.

The main problem with the Herpes virus is that it can be transmitted to the baby at birth. The simple solution for this is that the surrogate mother delivers the baby via c-section instead of vaginally.

The risk to the infant is only if there is an active Herpes infection present during delivery, though intended parents might ask for a mandatory c-section with a surrogate who carries the STD to be on the safe side.

The most important thing for you to do as a potential surrogate mother who has Herpes is to disclose this information during the matching process to the set of potential intended parents that you are interviewing with. You will also need to disclose this to the clinic before they have done any testing on you.

This way, if there is a problem, any relationship can be ended immediately, which will save everyone valuable time and money. Plus, this shows that you are honest and forthright with information, even derogatory information, which is vital in a surrogacy arrangement.

If you do not disclose this information in advance of testing, and it is found later, it could be a very large black spot on your relationship with both the clinic and the intended parents. STDs are not something to be taken lightly. They can have permanent and damaging effects on any unborn child.

It is important to note that Herpes is usually the only exception when it comes to carrying any sort of STD and still qualifying to become a surrogate mother. Because Herpes is only contagious when the baby passes through the birth canal, as opposed to being contagious in vetro, and because Herpes is so common in America, clinics and intended parents may turn a blind eye towards it.

Do not get offended if a clinic or intended parents reject you based on your Herpes status. These parents undergo a very expensive and emotional journey trying to become parents. They are usually extra cautious and extra sensitive to such issues.

But for every set of intended parents who may reject a Herpes carrier, there is another set of intended parents who simply do not care, so long as the proper safety precautions are taken. Good luck in your surrogacy journey!

Being strong matters when it comes to marriage

1371815849_521614736_1-Matrimony-shoot-2

Today, due to the impact of television, and confluence of various mediums an alien thought have been ingrained in Tamil society that is being size zero is beautiful. What is actually a size zero mean. It is nothing but, what once we called the skinny has taken after this fancy name. The information catharsis across the culture, country, and climate and food style has actually sending wrong information to our youth, that being skinny is the attraction quotient. All marriageable men and women are today literally in a fix to attain the size zero and a picture perfect shape. In attaining that the price the youth are going to pay in the later part of their life will be far worse. A brief acquaintance on the following topics will help us in understanding the adversities of the size zero fixation.

Starvation and weight loss

Many metro youths are starving themselves to become thinner, which is actually a blunder they are committing to themselves. Harping upon chocolates for energy needs, is nothing but a self-inflicting wound to the intestines of the body. Skipping a meal and half feeding the stomach will only instigate acid secretions and gastritis. A habitual starvation causes ulcer which needs surgical intervention in the chronic stage.

Impact of underweight in marital life

When it comes to marriage it is the healthy male and female can go the distance in enjoying the dimensions of the marital life. Healthy body is the prime factor for both the newly married bride and groom. The sweet promises of marital bliss can only berelished through the strong body, healthy mind and good eating habits.

Fitness regime and weight loss

“Sweating it out”is another catch phrase that has caught on globally. Many body conditioning programmes are designed and crash workout regimes are formulated around the world. But everyone can’t follow every other methods regardless of their fitness background. A fitness programme designed for American youth defiantly won’t fit in Indian youth as the rigorous training without much precipitation was possible there, but here the tropical climate instigate a lot of precipitation and fluid loss which leads to tiredness

Six packs and the loss of fluids in the body

Urban boys have already become hooked up to sporting a six pack abs as their silver screen stars whom they are idolizing have washboard abs. It’s a fascination of every fitness freak to boast of a six pack abs. Despite the intimidating workouts, to attain six packs, the exerciser has to minimize the water intake so as the abdomen muscle is not expanded during the course. So the fluid loss is imminent to the Indian youth, and not surprisingly this was not the case in cold weathered foreign countries.Wanna six pack, think again?

Anaemia and pregnancy complications

The perpetual underfeeding leads to the loss of red blood cells and the condition is called anaemia where oxygen supply gets decreased throughoutthe body. The anaemic women when conceived, have to face many complications like poor foetal development so on. The underweight women have a weaker immune system and are susceptible to infections during the pregnancy. For many miscarriage, critical pregnancy and irregular period cases anaemia has been the reason

Exercising responsibility in bringing up a healthy generation

Life is a game where our endurance level is constantly on check both mentally and physically. So it is a must to maintain a healthy you, despite cutting the food intake, becoming more fitness cautious and exercising regularly. It is important to exercise responsibility to procreate a healthy generation to pass on our legacy. Of late, the eloquent Bride and Groom searchers in online matrimony sites like Chennaimatrimony are looking at healthy people than skinny Tamil people, because they know “Strong is the new skinny”. How about you?

Polyarteritis Nodosa (PAN) – Effective Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Polyarteritis nodosa, also known as PAN, is a rare autoimmune disorder involving spontaneous inflammation of the arteries which causes symptoms such as fever, pain, fatigue, weight loss, bleeding, and dysfunction of affected organs. Inflammation of the arteries can be quite severe and may cause permanent damage to affected organs such as intestines and kidneys. Spontaneous bleeding from multiple sites can also prove to be fatal. PAN is therefore a very serious disorder which needs urgent attention.

PAN involves multiple systems of the body and usually affects muscles, joints, skin, intestines, nerves and kidneys. Though it is more common in the elderly population, it may affect individuals of all age groups including children. Conservative modern management of this condition involves the use of steroids and immune suppressant drugs. Though there is an initial good response to these medicines, in the long run, most patients’ condition invariably starts deteriorating. PAN may therefore cause serious morbidity and mortality.

In this scenario, Ayurvedic herbal treatment can be judiciously and effectively used to combat and successfully treat this disease. Herbal medicines can be given in high doses and for prolonged periods in order to treat inflammation of the arteries, bring about immunomodulation, as well as give symptomatic treatment to affected organs and prevent permanent damage. It is very important to commence treatment at the earliest possible so as to prevent long-term, irreversible damage.

According to the Ayurvedic pathophysiology of the disease, disturbed Vata Dosha causes the autoimmune status, and disturbed and increased Pitta Dosha causes inflammation of the arteries, thereby resulting in damage to various systems and organs. Ayurvedic treatment is therefore aimed at correcting the Vata Dosha and reducing damaging aspects of increased Pitta Dosha. This can be done using a combination of oral herbal tablet therapy and special Panchkarma procedures. These include induced purgation to treat Pitta Dosha and a series of medicated enemas known as ‘Tikta Ksheer Basti’ to treat the Vata Dosha.

While patients with mild forms of the disease go into remission within two to four months of commencing Ayurvedic herbal treatment, individuals suffering from a more severe form of the disease require prolonged treatment ranging from six to eight months or more. However, almost all patients suffering from PAN can be successfully treated so that the disease goes into a complete remission. Medicines can then be continued in a low those or with reduced frequency, so as to prevent a relapse of the disease. As compared to herbo-mineral Ayurvedic formulations, it is preferable to use herbal medicines since these are safe even with the use of very high doses of the medicines, and for prolonged periods.

Patients who present with bleeding from multiple sites of the body, and demonstrate severe damage to major internal organs are best treated in the intensive care units of well equipped hospitals. However, once the acute symptoms have been well controlled, it is better to institute Ayurvedic treatment so that the disease can be completely cured. Ayurvedic herbal treatment thus has a definite role to play in the successful and effective management of PAN.

The Catcher in the Rye: Mental Health Services and Social Connections for Children

The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, was required reading for my tenth grade English class. I remembered it as a story about the struggles of adolescence, the yearning for independence, and the reluctance to let go of youth. My son is now about the same age as I was when I read the book and we are living through his own nudge for independence, which sparked my interest to give the story another read. Before I began, I wondered what my take on the book would be at this point in life having survived adolescence and received training and experience in child development in addition to having a teen in the house. This reading accentuated the unresolved grief, family dysfunction, mental illness, and lack of social connectedness of the main character, Holden Caulfield, and how these difficulties exacerbate the issues experienced during the typical maturational process. As the country still debates gun control laws in the aftermath of Sandy Hook, and as we try to recover from the Boston Marathon bombing, The Catcher in the Rye reminds us about the importance of developing meaningful and genuine connections with our children and the need to address their mental health issues.

The Catcher in the Rye begins as a flashback story about Holden Caulfield’s experiences leading up to his nervous breakdown prior to Christmas. Holden narrates the story while receiving inpatient psychological treatment on the west coast. The events begin at Pencey Prep in Pennsylvania, where Holden has been expelled due to poor academic performance, and conclude in New York City as Holden attempts to return home. During the course of his journey, Holden attempts to make connections with a number of people however, he fails miserably due to his social ineptitude, lack of appropriate treatment for what may possibly be bipolar disorder, and inability to believe that other people are capable of being genuine. Holden eventually makes it home and connects with his younger sister. By that time he has decompensated to the point that, even though he is no longer experiencing suicidal ideations, he feels disconnected, misunderstood, and alone. Holden decides that he is going to go away, to escape from society and the rejection, the loneliness, and the pain that he feels. However, Holden makes one last trip to see his sister Phoebe before he disappears. Phoebe’s caring, anger, and innocence provide Holden with the connection he is looking for; she is both a peer and dependent to him. Through Phoebe, Holden is able to cling to his childhood and put off making the leap to young adulthood and independence.

One theme that I was more attuned to during this reading was the unspoken dysfunction of the Caulfield family. Holden frequently compares himself to his younger, deceased brother, whom he describes as brilliant and athletic, as well as his older brother, who has become a successful author. It is suggested that Holden is a challenging child, and somewhat of a disappointment to his parents as he has been unable to live up to their expectations. He has been expelled from at least four preparatory schools due to poor academic performance, he has difficulty socially connecting with others, and he has frequent mood swings. It is possible that Holden’s parents were drained from watching their youngest son battle with leukemia which left them with little strength to effectively deal with Holden’s grief and potential disability. In Holden’s eyes, they appear to have emotionally and physically divested themselves from him. He has little to no emotional family support and what appears to be very little communication with them. Holden is left adrift to navigate this tumultuous time in his life without support, understanding, and treatment. His efforts to reach out and communicate, including failing out of schools and getting into fights, are not understood as cries for help but are seen as personal shortcomings.

Holden perceives most people as being phony, superficial, and hypercritical. This may in part be due to his social awkwardness, lack of maturity, and feeling of being abandoned by his parents. He is continuously let down by everyone that he reaches out to for help as they either don’t live up to what Holden has built up in his mind, or they try to take advantage of him. Therefore, Holden comes to believe that everyone is phony who doesn’t or is incapable of meeting his preconceived expectations. In addition, Holden clearly experiences moments of mania during the story, which are often followed by feelings of sadness to the point where he does express some suicidal thoughts. It seems that the lack of communication with his parents, the unresolved grief and guilt over the death of his brother, and the inability to effectively and appropriately connect with others result in Holden being unable to interact with others on anything but a superficial level. The exception to this is Phoebe. Her reluctance to let her brother leave provides Holden with the strength to go home and ask for help. However, in the end, Holden continues to suffer from a lack of love and feelings of loneliness. He states, “Don’t ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody.” At this point, Holden continues to find it difficult to have genuine, meaningful relationships believing that when you open up to people that they will turn away from you in order to keep the relationship on a superficial level. Holden continues to be plagued by this emotional void and, while there is a hunger for social connectedness, he will continue to experience emptiness and rejection due to his quirkiness.

For me, reading The Catcher in the Rye in high school highlighted the struggle for independence and Holden’s war on hypocrisy. On this reading, I was able to obtain a better understanding of the tragedy that occurs as a result of Holden’s parents being unable to provide him the emotional support that he needs to overcome his brother’s death and deal with his mental health needs. Holden’s repeated failure to socially connect and develop a meaningful relationship with anyone other than his sister and the lack of treatment for his mental health issues made me think of the recent tragedies in Colorado, Sandy Hook, and Boston. It reinforced the need to take mental health needs and services seriously; just because these conditions are unseen doesn’t mean that they aren’t debilitating. Feeling cared for and connected to others reduces the stress, stigma, and isolation that are associated with these conditions. It made me wonder whether these tragedies could have been avoided if the people involved had received appropriate therapy and treatment. They may have felt connected and accepted, and these tragedies may have been avoided. The message of being accepted and cared for from The Catcher in the Rye continues to be relevant to young people today as we all strive for acceptance.

Isolated Systolic High Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure has been the main problem for everyone. Even I have faced and combated the issue. My wife and I have researched about blood pressure through our lives.

Prehypertension is considered 120/80 to 139/89. Systolic blood pressure is high when it is above 120 . High blood pressure is found by the readings that are taken. Reading above 140/90 is called High Blood Pressure, or Hypertension

Those who are at the age of 50 have prehypertension.Almost half of the people have blood pressure in the ages of sixty-five.

Left untreated, high blood pressure puts too much strain on the heart which can lead to atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. This, in turn, can lead to heart attack or stroke.

High blood pressure also causes blind eyes and kidney failures.

The force of the blood in the arteries as the heart “rests” is called as diastolic pressure. The force of the blood through the arteries as the heart beats are measured by the Systolic reading. The diastolic pressure reading need not be high for one to have high blood pressure when the systolic reading is high. This situation is called isolated systolic high blood pressure.

Both numbers are important for a correct diagnosis of high blood pressure. One should keep in mind that as we age, the diastolic reading will fall. Therefore, it is very important to know the number of systolic pressure.

The safety measure is to do a quick blood pressure test. To find out whether you have high blood pressure its better to visit the doctor.

The high blood pressure and heart problems cause silent issues and this do not show any specific symptoms. If something goes wrong then the person might be having heart problem or stroke.

Its time to follow medicines that do not cause negative side effects if you are having medicines prescribed to reduce blood pressure

English doctors do give medicines that cause side effects.

Patients opt for counseling to overcome the bad habits and follow the breathing and exercise program. Its really very hard to throw away the bad habits. Many adults do have the habits of smoking, drinking.

I have healed my blood pressure using this program. It has lot of breathing and relaxation exercises. My blood pressure has been normal till now.If the systolic blood pressure is more and if you are prehypertensive I suggest my High Blood Pressure program.

Once they started to follow my program their blood pressure saw some reduction and was out of medication in shortest time. I have treated many numbers of clients with serious side effects due to high blood pressure medicines.

Prostate Massage And Milking The Prostate – How To Milk The Prostate – Nurse’s Guide

Prostate massage and prostate milking are both commonly used terms to describe the massage or stimulation of the prostate gland either for medical or sexual reasons. Both terms are frequently used when the purpose is the relief of the symptoms of chronic prostatitis by a doctor and prostate milking or milking the prostate is used more often when the purpose is draining prostatic fluid during sexual activity to achieve a specific effect. Both can be performed internally or externally, but I will describe the internal technique here.

The prostate gland is just one part of the complex male reproductive system. It produces seminal fluid and functions in the process of ejaculation and orgasm. The gland is about the size of a walnut and is positioned directly behind the bladder. It’s prone to many conditions and diseases including, acute prostatitis, chronic prostatitis, enlarged prostate or BPH (benign prostatic hypertrophy) and prostate cancer.

The prostate milking technique is as follows (also sometimes prostate massagers or other milking or medical devices are used).

It’s best not to attempt this unless you’re sure you don’t have chronic prostatitis or any other serious condition. It’s always preferable to be cleared by your doctor first.

1. Gather your equipment together. You’ll need sterile non-latex gloves. Do not use latex gloves; serious allergies can develop over time with repeated use. You’ll need gloves that won’t snag or tear easily from sharp fingernails, etc. You can find these cheaply in any store with a pharmacy or over-the-counter drug section. You’ll also need some lubricant that is water-based; you can get this at your pharmacy also if you don’t already have some. Don’t use oils, lotions or perfume-based lotions; these contain irritants.

2. Check out your fingernails and make sure they are clipped and/or filed smoothly and won’t snag the gloves.

3. Take a trip to the bathroom and completely empty your bladder and bowels. This will help you relax more and will lessen the chance of an accident. Wash the area around your anus thoroughly to avoid any transfer of organisms. Wash your hands thoroughly and scrub them with a nail brush.

4. Get into a comfortable position, usually on the back or side. Put on one of the sterile gloves. You can use gloves on both hands if you like. Put a little of the lubricant on the fingers of the gloves you’re going to use.

5. Gently insert one or more fingers – better to start with one until you know what you’re doing. Be very careful if you have hemorrhoids. If that’s the case you may want to have them checked out by your doctor first. Move you finger slowly up the wall of the rectum, until you can feel the prostate gland. Be very gentle. No forcing or pushing. The gland will feel like a small ball.

6. Carefully and gently stroke or massage the gland along the sides only with your finger tips, not fingernails. You don’t want to touch the center or the top where there are many sensitive nerves and where you could do some damage.

7. Note the time. You should do this for only a few minutes. You may experience some odd feelings or sensations. And you may feel like you have to go to the bathroom but that should pass. Once the gland has contracted it will release some seminal fluid. You may or may not experience sexual pleasure, orgasm or ejaculation; this varies from person to person.

8. Carefully take off the gloves to avoid contamination and dispose of the gloves – they are no longer sterile and can’t be cleaned properly. Wash your hands thoroughly using a nail brush.

Prostate milking or prostate massage has been practiced by prostate specialists for many years for specific medical conditions. It’s controversial however. Although many men have been using this technique, there are risks involved. If you have any known or hidden condition or infection or inflammation of the prostate it’s possible to cause a serious systemic infection. The best approach is to get thoroughly checked out by your doctor first before you proceed.

Periwinkle and Chemotherapy Drugs – Why Limit Its Uses to Just Chemotherapy?

Periwinkle: This simple little plant is the source of most common chemo drugs used in the treatment of cancer. The properties which linked Periwinkle to the treatment of cancer were discovered inadvertently by a major pharmaceutical manufacturer while looking for a drug to control blood sugar in diabetics. Common folk lore attributed such a property to Periwinkle, but painstaking research revealed that the plant had no effect on blood sugar levels. Instead, the research uncovered the antineoplastic effects of plant extracts, prominent among them, the extraordinary properties of periwinkle and components in its makeup which form the basis of our common chemotherapy drugs.

The plant components, vincristine and vinblastine, in periwinkle, were found to bind to tubulin in cellular microtubules. The short story here is that the process arrested cellular division and killed the cells.

But the embarrassing factor in this that keeps getting swept under the rug is that these drugs don’t particularly discriminate between healthy cells and cancer cells. As a result, numerous healthy cells are killed in the course of chemotherapy as these drugs, in their mission of killing off cancer cells, go about causing general and widespread cell death, including the cells that comprise our immune system.o It’s like using a shotgun to kill a fly on an elephant. Not good.

The logic of chemotherapy in the treatment of cancer just doesn’t make any sense at all. That is, as far as curing cancer is concerned. Or curing any other disease for that matter. Our immune system is designed to attack and destroy any harmful invading organisms. So where is the logic of killing the immune system in order to cure a disease?

But there is still a very solid logic to the use of chemotherapy. It is the most profitable therapy in medicine. Profitable to the pharmaceutical industry, profitable to all segments of the medical business involved in the treatment of cancer. And this seems to explain why the many extraordinary properties of periwinkle are being quietly passed over in favor of the logic of profit in chemotherapy.

The therapeutic uses of the periwinkle plant are not limited to its derivations of the chemo drugs. The plant itself was introduced in Europe during the mid 1700s, as an ornamental plant. Today it grows throughout the world, mainly in the warmer climates, and it has been widely used in tropical folk medicine. Besides being useful in the treatment of cancer, decoctions of the plant have been used for maladies ranging from ocular inflammation, diabetes, hemorrhage, and insect stings.

Research conducted by several pharmceutical companies, and later abandoned, show derivatives of periwinkle to be a high octane fuel for the brain. This is due to an almost miraculous brain booster called vinpocetine. It is so effective against fading mental processes that it is being used routinely in supplemental form by nearly 50 countries.

Vinpocetine has been shown to improve blood circulation to the brain, reducing senility and age related dementia. It has been used successfully to improve hearing function by relieving that ringing and buzzing in the ears known as tinnitus, and it has eliminated vertigo (dizziness). Vinpocetine is also used extensively in Europe for improving visual function, including night vision, and in preventing or relieving glaucoma and age related macular degeneration.

Periwinkle is also an excellent, all around astringent that may be used internally and externally. Mainly it is used in the treatment of excessive menstrual flow. And as in other remedies that can affect the uterus, it can be used to address similar processes in the urinary system. Digestive problems can also benefit from treatment with periwinkle; problems such as colitis or diarrhea where it will act to reduce the loss of fluid or blood. Nose bleed, bleeding gums, mouth ulcers, and sore throats, all benefit from the use of periwinkle.

There are few health hazards associated with the use of periwinkle as a therapeutic drug, although anyone wanting to avail himself of this drug would be well served to consult a homeopathic physician who understands its uses. Overdosage can result in a severe drop of blood pressure. Other than that, the side effects seem to be very minimal, being largely limited to gastrointestinal complaints and skin flushing. The drug is usually made available in the form of ampules, capsules, coated tablets, and compound preparations.

It seems totally ironic that the USFDA continues to “protect” us from the perceived dangers of such a beneficial plant, in spite of its internationally proven safety and effectiveness while at the same time, allowing virtually unrestricted use of the same plant’s well known most toxic elements.
