Stroke – Causes, Symptoms and Treatments

You can take certain steps to prevent stroke like manage stress through exercise, avoid usage of alcohol, quit smoking, control diabetes, treat circulation problems, regular check on blood pressure and other preventive measures. Stroke specialists can be easily availed at hospitals where high quality equipment is used to treat the patients.

Stroke is a treatable disease that can be suspected as a result of aging that certainly leads to  severe disability or even death of a person. It is caused when an artery through the brain ruptures or the blood stops flowing. Consequently, it results in failure of functioning of brain as the cells die due to lack of oxygen. The movement of several parts of the body depends upon such cells therefore it results in various problems. Some of those problems are inability to speak properly, patient may lose his memory or even have paralysis attack. Factors like high blood pressure and high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, etc can result in stroke especially among the elderly people.

There are mainly two types of stroke. They are:

1. Ischemic stroke: It occurs when a blood clot or thrombus blocks the blood flow. Also, if it is found in other parts of the body and freely floats in the blood, it is called as embolus. This moving clot is carried via bloodstream to the brain where it causes ischemic stroke.

2. Hemorrhagic stroke: It occurs when a blood vessel on the surface of brain bursts  (subarachnoid hemorrhage) or when an artery in the brain breaks off and the nearby tissue fills with blood(cerebral hemorrhage).

Symptoms of Stroke
The symptoms of stroke can be recognized easily. It is important for you to seek advice from your doctor so that he can give medical aid as early as possible. Several symptoms of the stroke include TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack), dizziness, severe headache, perception problems and numbness in the body. Small or silent strokes may not cause any symptoms but can still damage brain tissue.

Stroke Treatments
The stroke is diagnosed via ultrasound, arteriography, MRI or any other quality-approved imaging equipment that help doctors to understand the problem before starting the treatment. Medicines like aspirin, heparin, etc. are used to restore the flow of blood. Surgical operations like carotid endarterectomy and angioplasty are done to open up the arteries. Also, treatments like aneurysm clipping, aneurysm embolisation and arteriovenous malformation (AVM) removal help to treat hemorrhagic stroke. In aneurysm clipping method, a small clamp is kept at the base of aneurysm that makes it isolated from its attached artery and allows it to burst. In aneurysm embolisation ttreatment, a catheter( tiny coil) is placed in the aneurysm, causing clotting and isolation from arteries. AVM removal is a surgery to remove AVMs found in the major portions of brain and reduce the chances of blockage or rupture.  In order to gather more information about strokes or its treatments, please refer to the web.

You Can’t Beat Cane Furniture For Style and Durability

Cane furniture is ideal for gardens and conservatories for many reasons, mainly because cane will not rot or become damaged by any type of weather. In a conservatory the air is moist which for most furniture is detrimental. Cane however is water resistant which means it will last for many years to come.

When you think of cane I guess you think of an elderly relative sitting in a rocker chair right? Wrong! Think again. Cane has seriously evolved and now comes in many different colours and styles. With the advancement of technology and with the skill of designers, cane furniture now has a top quality designer status. You only have to look around some of the world’s richest hotels and homes and you will find designer cane furniture on the patio or in conservatories. You only have to holiday abroad to see all the different types of styles. Because it is durable, buying cane furniture is an investment to an extent because you won’t be needing to replace it any time soon, the style of furniture is likely to go out of fashion before it is worn out.

If you’re an environmentalist then you will be happy to know that cane furniture is completely environmentally friendly because it is made from natural materials which haven’t been treated using chemicals.

The history of cane dates back over 3000 years ago. It was first developed in India and around the 1600’s cane furniture was imported to England.

There is some confusion because some manufactures’ call their furniture ‘wicker’. Wicker defined means a weaving process. So if you compare wicker furniture to cane furniture you are actually comparing a process to a product. They are basically the same because cane furniture is weaved. Rattan furniture is made from cane which is a raw material from tropical regions of Africa. As cane is a raw material it is extremely tough and durable which is why it is an ideal furniture material for either indoor or outside.

If you’re wondering how it’s made, let me explain… First of all the palm in harvested and boiled which removes all the sap from the bark. This gives the material flexibility which makes it easy to be moulded into different shapes. Once the boiling is complete the material is cut into thin strips. These strips are then weaved together to make the furniture.

As well as conservatories and patios, cane furniture is now being used in living rooms. This is mainly because the designs are so stylish and come in many different colours. Also with the durability of the material it will last for years. Most living room furniture unless you buy leather has a much shorter life span, whereas cane will last for years and years, looking great with minimal maintenance. However this quality furniture comes at a price because of all the work it takes to make a piece. But you won’t regret spending a bit more because you will get a contemporary piece of furniture which looks great for long time and is comfortable and inviting.

Buying a Bass Guitar Package for the New Guitarist for Christmas 2006

A bass guitar package is a great gift for the budding guitarist. The bass works closely with the drums to form a song's structure and beat. This makes it an appealing instrument for people, especially with rock music fans and those desiring to be in a band.

There are plenty of bass guitar package choices out there for the electric bass. These packages are designed to include everything your recipient needs to get started playing the base. This includes the electric bass guitar, the amplifier, and other accessories.

Here's some more information on buying a bass guitar package for the new guitarist for Christmas in 2006.

The Choices

In terms of brands, there are multiple packages to choose from. Check out the packs by Squier, Silvertone, Yamaha, and Ibanez to start out with. Ask your budding new guitarist which guitar makers they like the best. If they do not know, there are several ways you can make a choice. These include having the guitarist test out the different bass guitars in a music shop, purchasing one based on a factor such as cost or the accessories that come with it, or you can simply choose one randomly and hope for the best.

Where to Shop

There are also several places you can purchase a bass guitar package. You can go to a music store or you can shop online. Online is a really great choice because you can often find the best deals. If you are determined to have the new bass guitarist test out the different instruments, they can visit a music store to try them out and then you can purchase them online.

What is in the Pack?

There are two things that are consistent no matter which electric bass guitar package you buy. These are the bass guitar and the amplifier. The amplifier helps generate the sound. There are also other accessories that can be found. For example, in the Ibanez IJSB90 Jumpstart Bassics bass guitar package you will find an Ibanez GSR4 bass guitar, Ibanez 10 Watt amplifier, guitar strap, electronic tuner, a gig bag, picks, a cable, and a pouch for the accessories. The Squier Bass Pak includes a Squier® Affinity Series (TM) P Bass®, a Fender® Rumble 15 Amp, a strap, gig bag, cable, headphones, and a video.

Bass Guitar Pack

Based on the two examples with the Squier and the Ibanez bass packages, you can see that the two come with slightly different accessories. This is just one thing to consider when looking at all your options. Remember that the best way to purchase one of these as a gift is to simply ask the aspiring bassist which ones they really prefer. Of course, if you want it to be a surprise you can just make a decision but include the receipt, just in case!

Take the Quad Out!

While the most exciting portions of figure skating routine (for some) are the jumps, these high-flying athletic moves are the ultimate feats of a skater's ability. Jumps, in figure skating, come in two varieties, rotational and positional. Positional jumps are short jumps that display an artistic position in the air. The primary objective of rotational jumps is to rotate while airborne. In these jumps, the skater appears to spin in the air. Skaters' routines are measured partly on rotational jumps. For a quad, skaters have to achieve maximum rotation. While skaters need to develop as much rotational energy as possible, it is important that they obtain the best possible rotational position during the airborne portion of a performance as well.

Dick Button landed the first triple in 1952. Kurt Browning of Canada landed the first quad in 1982. Today, the quad jumps have become required elements in the men's program. Quad toe loops seem to be the most frequently attempted quad jumps. While many skaters credit Jozef Sabovchik of Slovakia with landing the first quad jump, in 1984, at the Winter Olympics. The first official quad was performed by Kurt Browning at the 1988 world championships. Suddenly the quad is the rage. How far will we go with those risky jumps? Do we want five six rotations in the air? Are we looking for as many revolutions until we run out of numerical prefixes? What is the limit of jumping possibilities? Is a quintuple toe loop or a quadruple Axel in our future?

The jump is called a quadruple toe loop, and it is performed by gliding backward on the right skate, planting the left toe pick, lifting off with an outside edge of the right skate, spinning four times and landing on the same outside edge of the right skate. Art, science, agility and strength have all been used in describing skaters. However, it takes a high degree of difficulty to achieve the quad. The key is to get the optimal combination of height and rotation. There are four key events for the quad. Toe-pick: the instant the toe pick is planed onto the ice; Take off: the last contact with the ice; Height: the top of the flight phase; Landing: the immediate contact with the ice. Obviously, the quad alone will not win a title; it's the total package, the artistry, the spins and the footwork. Obviously the focused should be on elements other than just the jumps.

A mistake in the quad costs dear while skaters can gain points on easier jumps. Doing a quad comes down to risk vs. reward in a judging system that puts emphasis on energy-sapping footwork and stiffly penalizes faulty jumps. The quadruple toe loop, is worth 9.8 points. The quad can come at a price. If you do it, you're a star. But if there is anything wrong with it -for instance, a fall, or it's under rotated, or too weak to do a combination after it, it's downgraded. There are very few skaters who can make a mistake on the quad and still land it. A negative grade of execution can cost up to three points. A triple Axel is worth 8.2 points. When it is done well, it can earn up to three bonus points. So why risk falling on a quad when you're more likely to land a clean triple Axel anyhow?

Rotational energy is the fuel that skaters work with, and they have to have energy to work with. The quad is an important jump. It's fun. It's interesting. It's beautiful when it's done right. While the quad is big news, I wonder if it will be some time before figure skaters are doing quintuple jumps. If you can do a quad well, by all means do it. But skating should never be about the jumps. It should be poetry on ice! No quad. While I agree that quad jumpers should be given more points, because of the tremendous risks involved, but I would rather be very pleased with the attention given to creativity and to the art we are so used to when it comes to skating.

The quad jump is a spectacular move. It is a neat and exciting. With the techniques and equipment currently used now, I think the athletes are pushing the envelope. I do not see a quint any time soon or a quad Axel. I do see the other more difficult quads –Lutz's and flips however – being done soon as well as more consistent and higher quality jumps. To add a revolution may take a while (or maybe not) and potentially some new technique, training or equipment modifications to the sport. I imagine that with different technologies in boots, blades, along with different training techniques, strength-training, and perhaps costumes, it might be possible for skaters to land bigger jumps.

There are limits to what the human body can do and I wonder how close we are to them in the sport of figure skating. I long for the good ole 6.0 system. Weir has complained of the new system, saying such things as, "It gives you points for being able to chew on your shoes," Concerns for artistic expression has become secondary with the preoccupation of racking up points. Technical ability does not only refer to jumps, but it includes spins, footwork, and a general flexibility. I just love to watch figure skating, and to witness the numerous feats of athleticism, skill, courage, endurance and passion.

How To Identify Panic Attack Symptoms

Panic attack symptoms happen when a person’s anxiety gets out of control. I know the sinking feeling of my anxiety getting out of control and taking over my life. People who do not suffer from panic disorder do not understand how devastating panic attacks can be.

When I first started getting panic attack symptoms they really didn’t bother me too much. As they started to get worse they really started to negatively affect my life. No one seemed to understand the pain and suffering I was going through. People would tell me that I was overreacting and that I was being too sensitive. This made me feel horrible, I mean was there anyone out there to help me? I had never felt so alone and alienated.

The feeling of being alone just increased the frequency of my panic attacks. I mean how could people not understand what I was going through? This was real, the pain and depression I felt were real. This was an extremely dark time in my life. I started thinking that I had some sort a disease, or a tumor, or something! I thought there was no way that anxiety could affect me so bad.

If you think you have a panic disorder, keep an eye of for the panic attack symptoms:

The most common panic attack symptom is the fear of having another attack. I used to dread another attack. I did everything I could to avoid things that could trigger panic attacks. I was in constant fear of my headaches and dizziness. If you find yourself avoiding specific people or places for the fear of an attack, then it is very likely that you are suffering from panic attacks.

Another fairly common panic attack symptom is tingling and numbness through your body. Even though this is a common symptom, it’s best to play it safe and see a doctor.

Feeling smothered is another panic attack symptom. People often feel like the weight of the world is on their chest. People often feel like they cannot breathe. This symptom usually scares people the most. This happens because of the way you breathe when you get anxious.

When you breathe too fast your body’s carbon dioxide and oxygen levels get all out of whack. When you breathe too much and too fast you can experience breathlessness, or you can start to hyperventilate… This used to happen to me a lot and I would think I was choking… It felt like I was being smothered by a pillow.

If you find yourself experiencing these panic attack symptoms then you probably have a panic disorder. The best way to treat these symptoms is through behavior modification. This can be done fairly easily and requires no medication.

Loss of Appetite in Children and When Should You Worry

Before coming to the conclusion that your child is losing her appetite, it is very important to understand what the term means and what is the time when you should worry and take action. Many parents compare their children with others and if they find that their children do not eat or eat less than others, they conclude that it is losing of appetite.

What is loss of appetite?

The term means not feeling hungry or not having a desire to eat anything. There are varieties of reasons why a child experiences a reduction in appetite. Often when this is occasional, parents should not worry. If your child starts thinking that she needs to lose weight or wants to be thinner, talk to your doctor. This is a physical illness called anorexia which needs to be treated along with counselling.

Causes of problem with appetite in children

  1. Slow rate of growth

When there is change in growth, it can cause children to lose their hunger. The growth rate in first year is rapid, but it slows down after one year gets completed. So, if there is a decline in appetite due to this, it is quite normal.

  1. Stress

Surprisingly kids have to go through many stress moments and this may have negative effect on toddlers and children which includes loss of appetite. So, if this is the cause you need to identify the stress and try to alleviate it.

  1. Depression

Depression is a big reason behind deterioration of appetite in children. Most of the parents do not figure out depression in their children. If you observe lack of hunger in your child, it is a clear indication for that.

  1. Sickness

Some illnesses cause reduction of appetite in children. If you see sudden change in your child, check whether she is suffering from sore throat, fever or something else. Most children recover their diet as soon as the discomfort is over.

  1. Medications

There are some medicines that take away appetite from children. If your child is undergoing any treatment or has just completed one, ask the doctor to prescribe some appetite booster to regain her appetite. If it is a side effect of antibiotic, it will take a little bit of time.

  1. Anaemia

Anaemia is also one of the causes behind lack of desire to eat in children. Anaemic children are weaker, thinner and irritable. Treat this because it may interfere your child’s development and academic performance too.

  1. Anorexia nervosa

This is a psychological aversion of eating which children develop in order to become like their screen idols. If you feel this is the case with your child, take her to an eating disorder specialist and get this treated.

  1. Constipation

Irregular bowel movements in children make them lose their appetite. Check out the symptoms and if they match, treat it.

  1. Intestinal worms

Worms enter into kid’s digestive system and live there. These can also make your child lose interest in eating. Get the tests done and get it treated at the earliest.

Tips to prevent loss of appetite in kids

  • Do not argue with the kid at mealtime
  • Try to adjust meal schedules so that you serve food when she is hungry
  • Offer snacks in between meals to your child
  • Help your child make healthy food choices
  • If your child is not hungry, do not force her to eat
  • Break the meals and serve at regular intervals
  • Encourage physical activities

Losing interest in food or selected food items is common in children. So, it is not alarming each time. If your child is happy, looks healthy and sleeps well, there is not much to worry about. Trying a little bit and spending time with your child will help her get over it easily. However, a prolonged loss of appetite or if your child does not want to eat at all, need medical attention immediately. Keep a close watch on your child’s eating habits if you find any of the symptoms matching, contact your child’s doctor. Besides, if your child is already underweight or has gone through long illness, you should consult your doctor to get her some appetite boosting medicine.

Baba Ramdev Medicine For Kidney

People who are suffering from hypertension, metabolic disorders like diabetes or other heart complications often show signs of kidney disorders. Effective functioning of the two bean shaped kidneys assures that the excretion of toxins from the body is smooth. If the toxins are not removed they start to gather inside the body leading to the production of poisonous substances that can damage the body’s healthy functions. Making sure that the toxins are excreted timely, is the responsibility of these two half disc shaped organs, which are equidistant from the spinal column on both sides of the body!

Toxins in the body are harmful, and have to be thrown out of the body in the form of urine with the help of the kidneys. The proper and timely removal of the toxins assures that the body starts healthy and alive. Edema and swelling can settle in the body if the kidney function is compromised. The human wastes gather in the kidneys and through two tubes they are taken into the bladder for excretion. The body’s minerals are also recycled with the help of kidneys and these organs also carry out mineral salt dilution in the body.

You may not even realize it but the kidneys are busy working -as you toil and as you sleep. Day in and Day out, they carry out the toxin excretions and bodily regulations. The body works best if it has an adequate supply of essential vitamins and minerals. The Kidneys have sieves that carry out a process of filtering and in this way they save the vitamins and minerals for the body by filtering them, and in turn flush waste materials out of the body.

Substance and chemical abuse largely effect kidney function. Cigarettes, alcohol, strong medications, drugs etc prompt the body to go haywire and start to increase toxin production in the body. These toxins have to be taken out, but the kidney needs to put in extra efforts in the flushing process. You need to cut down on the sodas, salty, sugary and fatty diets right away. To help in optimum functioning of kidneys the person needs to consume lots of water. Toxin build-up and lack of water shows up as swelling, engorgement and tenderness in the kidneys. This inflammation hampers the normal kidney function and leads to complications in the outflow of toxins.

Kidneys can suffer from various disorders and stone in the kidneys is one of them. The condition is painful, exhausting and deeply distressing. Regular cleansing of the kidneys is a must and for this Baba Ramdev has prepared a herbal remedy called Divya Ashmarihar Ras that can be of great help. This herbal combination acts on the kidney stones and helps in removing them from the body in a natural manner. There are plenty of conventional treatments available in modern medicine but these do not effectively remove the stones.

Medical sciences insist on surgery for stone removal and they administer chemical based medicines to control the condition. The herbal medicines are free of all side effects and reduce the chances of repeated stone formations. The Divya Ashmarihar Ras also saves the kidneys from frequent infections. Divya Punarnavadi Mandur and the package of remedies for renal failure with the goodness of Divya Ashmarihar Kvath take care of kidney health and also supply nutrition to the kidneys. Baba Ramdev medicine for kidney helps in removing kidney stones of patients who suffer with this diseases and give permanent relief.

The History of Pokemon – How Did Pokemon Become Popular?

The history of Pokemon began with one single japan man named Satoshi Tajiri. It was his hobby. Over time he decided to put his idea of catching creatures into practice, to give children the same thrills he had as a child of catching insects and tadpoles. Tajiri and friends worked a lot of hours on designs and Tajiri even went with unpaid hours to make his dreams come true for the game. It nearly drove partners bankrupt, and several employees quit due to financial conditions. The first Pokemon games, Pokemon red and green, came to Japan on February 27, 1996, which fulfilled Tajiri’s dreams. Because of the success rate in Japan with the Pokemon games, they released it overseas.

The anime, as well as Pokemon Yellow, marked Pikachu as the most popular and recognized creature in Pokemon history, turning it into the franchise’s mascot. This led to a small spin-off game called Hey You, Pikachu!, which was released in Japan on December 12, 1998, and in North America on November 6, 2000. This was a virtual-pet game, utilizing the Nintendo 64’s Voice Recognition Unit to let the players interact verbally with Pikachu. When the anime finished following the games’ story with Ash’s defeat in the Pokémon League in January 1999, it started a new season in a new region called the Orange Archipelago.

A major overhaul of the main game series occurred when Pokemon arrived on the Game Boy Advance on November 21, 2002 when Ruby and Sapphire Versions were released in Japan. Trainers found themselves in the southern land called Hoenn where 135 new Pokemon were waiting to be discovered. The games reached North America on March 18, 2003 and had many new features, the most prominent being Pokemon Contests, Double Battles, Pokemon Abilities and Natures for each Pokemon. Also introduced in these versions were more types of weather and two new villain teams, Team Magma and Team Aqua..

The anime began a new series, Advanced Generation series, which started in Japan on the same day as the release of the games and reached North America almost a year later. A great deal was changed in this series, including the introduction of a new main character, May, based on her game counterpart.

There are several generations of Pokemon, and there is still future generations to come. When the world changes, so does the world of Pokemon. 2016 marks the 20th anniversary of Pokemon, and will be celebrated by the re-release of the original Generation I core series games on the Nintendo 3DS’s. There are currently six generations of Pokemon, and over this time period, there are many games, including spin offs, along with anime, movies, manga, a Trading Card Game, music, and a musical.

Recycling and Landfill

Production of waste is a global problem that won’t just go away on its own so we constantly have to find convenient and suitable ways of disposing of it. Every area of our lives involves getting rid of something, whether it is household rubbish, plastic, paper, metal, commercial waste or anything else for that matter that we simply don’t want or need and wish to discard.

Unfortunately today, most of our waste tends to end up in landfill sites, which is far from ideal. Landfill has an immediate advantage in that it is convenient, however, there are other more serious issues regarding landfill which are not so advantageous to human or animal health or for the environment despite the protection agencies, legislation and monitoring that is in place.

The introduction and steadily rising cost of The Landfill Tax is designed to reduce the amount of waste deposited in landfill by encouraging waste producers to produce less waste and to reuse or recycle mixed waste rather than to dump it. Landfill sites are heavily regulated and monitored by environmental agencies in an attempt to minimise the risk to health and the environment.

What is landfill?

Simply put, landfills are sites, sometimes old quarry sites, where waste is deposited into the ground in order to rot. As each new load of rubbish arrives for disposal, it is pushed down and compacted into the site and then covered with a layer of soil. In order to prevent leakage of toxic material into the surrounding earth and water, the landfill must first be lined in order to seal in the waste.

Once a landfill site has been filled to capacity, it has to be capped or covered and a new site must be found. Usual ways of covering are with a layer of plastic, more soil, a protective covering, sand, more soil and then something like grass. This helps keeps rodents away and minimises the risk of waste gases and other toxins being released into the surrounding land and waterways.

Problems with Landfill

Currently around 80% of our household rubbish ends up in landfill sites and as the amount of rubbish continues year after year, a major problem is that basically, we are running out of space. It isn’t easy to find a new site for landfill either as no one wants to have it in their “back yard” so to speak. Apart from the risk of explosion, landfill sites also give off unpleasant odours and gases and contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which can have a negative impact on health even at low doses.

Greenhouse Gases

As the rubbish rots in a landfill site, Methane gas is given off and as Methane is a greenhouse gas, this is a major cause for concern. The liner in the landfill site helps to prevent the gas escaping. What often happens is that pipes collect the Methane and carry it to the surface where it can be burned off (a process known as Flaring) or it can be extracted and used as fuel elsewhere.

Leachate

Leachate is produced in landfill sites from water and liquid draining from the rotting rubbish and again, the liner helps prevent this substance from contaminating the surrounding land and water systems. Pipes will usually collect Leachate and pump it to the surface where it may be re-circulated but if a lot of Leachate is produced it will often be sent to wastewater treatment plants.

Time

Another major problem with landfill is that some non-biodegradable substances such as plastic bags for example, can take maybe hundreds of years to break down. There is no light or oxygen in landfill so rubbish cannot be broken down very quickly.

Health Risks

Despite all the measures in place, several studies have highlighted health risks in relation to landfill sites and the full impact on human, animal and environmental health is still not clear and is being widely debated.

Recycling – a solution

A large proportion of the rubbish ending up in landfill sites is not really rubbish at all as most of it could serve other more useful purposes with a far less damaging effect or could be recycled to produce new products. So, by far the best way to minimise the amount of waste going to landfill and reduce the impact on health and the environment, is to reuse or recycle as much waste as possible.

Currently, only around 7 or 8 per cent of household waste is recycled but if more people were aware of the risks associated with landfill they might be prepared to make more effort to sort and either reuse their waste or recycle it at one of the growing number of recycling depots. One mans trash is another mans treasure as they say so waste not want not.

How to Choose and Match Brick Veneer For New Construction and Additions

My neighbor spent well over $200,000 to add a beautiful addition to her traditional brick veneer Cape Cod home. But when the masonry contractor put up the brick he failed to even come close to matching the color of the mortar to the original part of the house. Even worse the new bright white mortar clashes with both the new brick and the old. The house now has a garish and jarring appearance and the cost of repair is prohibitive.

Brick veneer is the most durable and beautiful material that will protect your home from the elements. Brick is virtually maintenance free and will last for generations. Living in the Detroit area it is plain to see the brick in all the dilapidated buildings is still in beautiful condition and in most cases can be salvaged and reused. Brick veneer is more costly and you will have to live with your choice for as long as you own your home. If you’re planning an addition or building a new home the money, time and effort invested in choosing the design, brick, mortar and most importantly the contractor will be returned many times over in long-term value.

These are some ideas to consider when choosing or matching brick veneer

• Cost: maybe it would be better to sacrifice square footage for quality and beauty

• Design: Long, high walls need to be broken up with a vertical course of brick, a ledge of stone or by brick that varies in color and texture. Design in offset walls with interior or exterior corners to give vertical definition to the house.

• Use “offset” (brick that protrudes from the wall in patterns or randomly)of bricks to create interest

• Make the addition narrower or wider than the existing home for interior or exterior corners to make brick and mortar matching easier

• How does the house fit into the neighborhood? A traditional styled house needs darker reds and more texture with gray mortar. Fieldstone, granite or sandstone can be used carefully

• Contemporary houses can use whites, blushes or neutral colors and smooth to glazed brick. Mortar can be bright white

• A skilled and experienced mason will take the time to try out various mixtures to match the mortar. Remember it is the SAND in the mortar that must match. Ask to see other work the mason has done and be prepared to pay a little more

• There are many sizes and profiles of brick available. We have a ranch house built on a slab in our neighborhood that used long, low profile brick with a subtle wavy texture. Along with a double-hip roof and deep eves this house would be the envy of Frank Lloyd Wright himself!

• Design the roof and gutters so the downspouts can be used to hide the seam between the old and new brick. There are many decorative gutter and downspout products available. Visit a local siding and gutter supply house

• A faux copper downspout with an elegant leader head (or conductor) can be used to hide a seam too

• Many faux half columns are available in various metal and paintable materials

• Use high quality beveled horizontal or battened vertical siding carefully in your design

• More and/or larger windows, entry doors, shutters and small round or octagon shaped windows can be used to breakup large brick walls

• Be careful using brick up into gables. Because of the roof slope at each end of the brick courses, the careless mason will loose his way; the vertical joints will not line up and the wall will have an undulating and amateurish look. A small window high in the gable would be good in this circumstance

• And remember to choose your roof shingles and materials at the same time. As an example, using a metal roof on an addition can be a way of making the addition “compliment” the original house instead of trying for an exact “match” (for the few of you that are self-confident, brave and daring you can use a combination of materials and design to “contrast” the original house; I’ve seen it done and to wonderful ends!)

And finally a special mention when using stone. A cobblestone cottage looks the way it does because it’s a cottage! A cottage is a small house. A large stone house must be very carefully designed. Avoid long, tall walls of stone veneer.

Mixing stone with brick veneer can produce a pleasing effect. Try to imagine you are building your house on the ancient ruins of stone fence or an old country manor. The lower corners, some around the entry door and a few randomly chosen places in the wall are all that is needed.

Brick has been made in local kilns using clay dug up from nearby river banks for centuries. The brick you find made in New England may clash with landscape of the house you build in Texas. The same is true if you use that blush pink brick that you loved in Florida for a house built in Wisconsin. The brick must be from the same origin as the house. Contemporary or traditional; single story ranch or two story colonial; split-level or townhouse; new construction or addition, all need the appropriate brick veneer to enhance long term value and style.

Tips For Racquet Ball Instructors

It is not easy being a coach. If you’re teaching racquetball, you are up for more challenges. There are many people who might enlist in your program who actually don’t know the way to play the game to begin with. It would be really tough explaining to them the mechanics of racquetball and teaching them the principle positioning and methods in playing. It is better if you would try harder not to suffer your cool. Here are some effective points that would surely help you succeed in your endeavor.

First, explain to your students the concepts of missing the ball and crowding the ball. Most players worry too much about missing the ball but they wind up crowding the ball (being inappropriately hit by the ball in any step in the body). Incite each individual to take trials by error in determining the best key schemes. Toss some balls into the student to jam him. When she learns the gap between crowding and getting jammed, she could open herself to discovering and learning hers devised way in correct positioning and swinging.

Second, remember that your students would always are inclined to focus or center on the order in the direction they are taught. If you teach gripping before swinging, they would wind up blaming the grip. If you teach swinging before positioning, they would end up blaming the swing or grip. The best sequence is to teach proper positioning before gripping and swinging. This way, the students would surely understand your critiques. Instructors who ordinarily teach grip, stroke, and mechanics before court positioning are frequently having a more difficult time. This is because students are inclined to worry much about their grip, stroke, and mechanics instead of about pre-positioning so they could hit using the correct mechanics.

What is the easiest, yet fastest method to teach students not to crowd the ball? As a teacher, you need to be strategic enough in taking out their fears of possibly missing the ball. To do this, have them play the ball on three or two bounces. This is teaching the off backwall return. It works best for novices who’re learning how the ball is bouncing off various sidewalls at differing speeds and heights. As your students get more skilled in the technique, shift to using two and then one bounce. This way, you are worsening the contest and sharpening their skills.

To conclude, racquetball might be about positioning. Let the students practice positioning as well as stroke mechanics. Get them to be be conscious that weak or poor positioning could result in weak or poor return shots. Remember that if the students would understand the need for their court positioning over stroke or grip mechanics, they would be more able to slowly but surely teach by themselves the ways to get away or faraway from the ball. Along the way, they would learn how not to crowd the ball but not miss it at the same time. In the conclusion, practice makes perfect.

Maintenance and Relapse Prevention in Chemical Dependency Treatment

Substance abuse treatment professionals should provide clients with the knowledge, strategies, and strength to continue recovery after treatment ceases. Clients will have a comparatively short time in treatment to plan the rest of their lives. Understanding the client’s goals should be the counselor’s primary goal. Long-term success will be dependent upon the client’s desire to stay healthy, but relapse prevention techniques, especially early on, can be beneficial. This paper will analyze relapse prevention techniques that can be employed to promote long-term recovery in clients.

Relapse prevention is primarily skills counselors can teach their clients to prevent the return of addictive behaviors. Relapse and recovery should be defined by the client, and appropriate strategies should be congruent with the client’s goals. High-risk situations (HRS) are important for the client and counselor to identify. HRS are situations where there is a posed threat to the client’s recovery (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2008). For example, high-risk situations may be a particular event, a group of friends, or even a time of day. The client should identify the situation, the associated thought, the resulting emotion, and an action plan to prevent relapse. Most relapse events are associated with three kinds of high-risk situations including frustration and anger, interpersonal temptation, or social pressure (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2008). Relapse Prevention Therapy (RPT) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy which helps the client identify HRS, develop coping strategies, strengthen self-efficacy, and address complex issues related to the emotions that may lead to relapse in spite of skills the client may have. It is important for the counselor to recognize if “coping deficits are a result of lack of knowledge and skills or if adequate coping skills are being interfered with by factors such as low motivation, low self-efficacy, or anxiety” (Marlatt & Parks, 2002, p. 12).

Another important element of relapse prevention is the establishment of a support system. Support systems may include family, friends, self-help groups, church, or healthcare professionals. A support system is critical to preventing relapse, and must be established before treatment ends (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2008). Clients should list who these people are, and what types of support each provides. For example, a client may have specific friends that will help with recreational activities, certain loved ones who are comforting, and a counselor who can help when issues arise. Clients should also be reassured that counseling options will remain available. Chemical dependency treatment alone will not result in the resolution of a lifelong list of complex issues. Continued individual therapy may be indicated in these clients.

In conclusion, the end of treatment can be a trying time for clients. It is important counselors have prepared clients for the complicated transition back into the real world. Identifying high-risk situations and creating coping strategies for these scenarios can be beneficial. In addition, the establishment of a support system is imperative. Treatment outcomes may heavily depend on a strong network of family, friends, and professionals. Preventing relapse in a client that wants to return to addictive behaviors is impossible. However, assuming, they survive, what the client learns from a relapse can be invaluable to their future recovery.

25 Most Common Bipolar Disease Symptoms

On an ordinary day, anyone may call it a mood. When it shifts erratically from one to another, people call it mood swings. But what is really the clinical explanation for people experiencing episodes of extreme moods that shifts unpredictably as any weather going bad on a good day?

Bipolar Disease symptoms include feeling overly ecstatic to feeling tremendously poignant. This high and low process in one’s mood consists the exasperating Bipolar Disease symptoms.

A depressive episode is identified if more than 5 depressive Bipolar Disease symptoms occur all throughout the day, everyday for a span of two weeks or more.

In serious episodes of depression or mania, psychotic symptoms, which include hallucinations and delusions, are also sometimes felt. Unfortunately, Bipolar Disease afflicted people are oftentimes misdiagnosed as having a more severe mental illness called schizophrenia.

A mixed bipolar state, wherein fusions of mania and depression symptoms occur, can also be considered as a Bipolar Disease symptom. These combinations of Bipolar Disease Symptoms oftentimes involve anxiety, insomnia, sudden loss/gain in appetite, psychotic behavior and suicidal thoughts. A person under a mixed bipolar state experiences a confusing mode of sadness at the same time having vigorous or energetic feelings within.

Evidently, people experiencing Bipolar Disease Symptoms are plagued with two very contrary moods. However, through consistent medication and psychotherapy treatment, stabilization of the Bipolar Disease Symptoms can easily be attained.

Tips On How To Prevent Hairballs In Cats

Feline hairballs are a normal phenomenon in cats and there are many methods to handle them. It is hair that was not digested, accrued, and coughed out. They may either move hair through their digestive system or the hair will develop in their bodies causing them to gag and heave until it’s out of their system.

The three most common cures to assist to reduce the frequency of this are special lubricants, fiber supplements, and better grooming. There are many dry meals especially formulated for this problem – but they may be pricey and will not always help. The most suitable way, of course, is prevention.

Fiber

One of the best ways to keep away from this problem is by using fiber. This will help your cat to defecate simpler by adding moisture and bulk towards the stool. Good resources of fiber consist of squash and canned pumpkin. These two foods can also be used to help you with bowel problems and diarrhea.

Lubricants

In case your cat continues to have this difficulty than you must ask advice from your vet, and she or he will advocate the most effective remedy that you can utilize. Many people will make use of petroleum based gels or lubricants, which are offered to them orally. These cannot cost you a lot and may be given as prescribed by a vet.

Grooming

Naturally the simplest way to avoid cat hairballs is usually to groom them. Every day you need to utilize a brush and take away any hair that is attempting to fall off their bodies. That way they will not lick it off when they clean themselves. Just make sure that you are gentle with them and won’t do it a whole lot that they wind up by losing more hair than what exactly is considered necessary.

How to Clean a Wig Properly

Cleaning Your Wigs Properly. It’s not as Difficult as You May Imagine

You spent good money on your new wig so let’s make it last. If you want your beautiful wig to continue to look fresh and give you long term enjoyment, then as with anything else, you need to take care of it. For those of you who are dealing with cancer or other health-related treatment, I know that maintaining a wig may be the last thing you want to do. However, I believe that for many women, maintaining the routine and glamour of their outward appearance can make all the difference in the world in avoiding depression. Anything you can do to help in the healing process will be a positive step during this crucial time and for some of us that means paying attention to these beauty rituals and this area of our life that allows us to step out of the house feeling put together.

After nine years of regularly assisting women at their hospital bedside who are challenged with one condition or another and experiencing hair loss, I have truly seen miracles happen when a woman puts on a new wig, takes a look at herself in the mirror and suddenly feels beautiful again and gets her ‘mojo’ back. It gives her that extra umph she needed to work harder to overcome her condition. Remember, human hair wigs, alternative hair, created hair – which ever term you resonate with – is non-breathing hair; it has no natural oils, so it needs hydration and replenishing.

Okay, let’s talk about Synthetic Hair wigs first.

Since synthetic hair is made from kanekalon, a nylon hair, it calls for different products then are used on human hair. Synthetic hair comes in silky or crimped styles and is very inexpensive. The silky kanekalon is fine and straight, some are made with built-in body.

There are several different types of synthetic hair ranging in price and quality. The highest-quality type of synthetic hair is called monofilament, monofiber or “mono” for short, which looks and feels very much like human hair.

The purpose of cleaning synthetic hair is to remove scalp oils that can build up over time. Also, if you use a lot of styling products, this buildup can make the hair look dull and can also promote tangling. I advise my clients who are consistently wearing their synthetic pieces to wash them once every ten to twelve times they wear it. If they use a lot of styling products, its best to wash the hair once every five or six wears. It’s important to keep in mind that washing synthetic hair will certainly decrease its life span, as nylon will lose its elasticity and sheen with washing, so try not to use excessive amounts of product. Just put on enough product to do what you need for the look you are trying to attain and wash only when needed.

When brushing:

Brushing synthetic hair will help avoid getting tangles and knots. A regular hairbrush should not be used on synthetic hair since it will cause the ends to split and get frizzy. Purchase a special synthetic hair comb or brush at any beauty supply store. Using a brush with rubber tips on the bristles can be used for synthetic and for human hair as well to keep the hair fibers from splitting.

Brush the hair before washing to remove any tangles. A wig “detangler” spray can be applied to help separate the strands if necessary and smooth out any knots.

Place the piece on a wig head. They come in Styrofoam or canvas. Either can be used. Place small T-Pins at the temples, forehead and along the nape to keep the hair in place. This also will prevent inversion (when the hair comes through the inside of the wig).

For synthetic hair, some people will use at-home products as simple as laundry detergent followed by a good wig conditioner. Others use specific synthetic wig care products that can be purchased online and at most beauty supply stores and specialty wig shops.

Using proper styling products on synthetic hair is important. Many products are available in beauty supply stores, including hairspray, leave-in conditioner, shine spray, mousse and shaping cream.

Leave-in conditioner can be sprayed onto damp synthetic hair and then rubbed in gently with your hands. Okay it’s time to wash your “Little Lady.”

This process is super easy and should not take more than 5 minutes. Fill a bucket or a sink with cool water. Do not use hot water; if your wig, hairpiece or extensions have any type of wave or curl, hot water will relax it. Also hot water has a tendency to draw out the color.

Mix about two capfuls of synthetic wig shampoo into the water, place the wig head gently into the soapy water and move the hair back and forth in the water for approximately 3 minutes. Do not twirl the wig head as that most certainly will cause hair to tangle.

Remove the wig head from the soapy water and hold it under the faucet with cold, clean water going in the same direction of the hair, rinsing it until there are no soap suds left. Repeat with 2 capfuls of conditioner and then repeat the rinse procedure.

Carefully remove the pins from the wig head and place them aside. Never brush a synthetic wig when it is wet. This can cause hair stretching and breakage. To dry the wig, place it on a towel and blot the wig continuously, retrieving the water from the piece. Do not twist or wring out the hair. There is a wonderful product called a Friction Free Towel which is similar to a chamois material that when used in blotting, will pull out the water from a wig three times as fast. Then place the wig on a wig stand or dry wig head until dry.

You can prevent the buildup of scalp oils on synthetic wigs by wearing a wig cap. Wig caps are inexpensive and can be purchased at beauty supply stores. Just make sure that the cap is not too tight as you now will be wearing two pieces of elastic. One in the wig base and one in the cap.

Also, never use heated styling tools such as blow dryers, curling irons or straightening irons on synthetic hair. Heated tools, even on the coolest setting, will melt synthetic hair. Unless it’s only cold air I do not suggest using a blow dryer on synthetic hair. Also be careful of getting near the heat in the kitchen. Reaching in the oven to grab that beautiful lasagna or salmon dish you prepared will be the demise of your piece.

Now for Human Hair Wigs:

You can follow the same washing instructions as above only there will be a few more products needed to protect this type of hair. This process should not take more than 5-6 minutes.

Since human hair is a bit more delicate, it calls for more sensitive products. Most people think that baby shampoo is the most delicate when in fact it’s the worst product as it will dry out the hair. As with synthetic hair, you only need to wash your wig when you feel the need to. When it starts to look a bit too disheveled, greasy or dirty, that’s the right time. Ladies… we all know when it’s time.

First, I suggest that you purchase a good wig shampoo. Regular shampoo may contain too much alcohol, which if used continuously, can slowly break down the wig. It’s important to put the protein back into the hair after washing and before conditioning, so purchasing a wig protein spray is essential to keeping the hair strands from becoming brittle. Purchasing a good color retention product will help secure your color from washing out.

Additionally, a good wig conditioner, wig hair spray and wig de-tangler is essential in keeping the hair from getting matted and tangled thus creating breakage.

Here are some Product Solutions I recommend:

When drying human hair, remove the hair carefully from the block and blot it with a large dry towel. Again, never ring or twist the hair as that can promote breakage. There is a wonderful friction-free towel that will soak up the water in the wig three times as fast. I recommend that you place the human hair on either a wig head or a wig stand where air can flow through inside and out.

It’s good to let the piece dry partially – until it’s only damp – before blow dying it. Also placing a thermal spray protectant on the hair before applying a heating device on it will protect the hair from burning or drying out.

So there you have it! Don’t be afraid – you’ll do just fine if you follow these tried and true steps.

Good luck!
