Over Christmas holiday in Colorado, my family and I decided to go to the local hot springs. It was just what we needed to warm up our bones from the chill of being outside all day cross country skiing. There were people of all shapes and sizes. What really is cellulite and how do we get rid of it? After doing some research on how to get rid of these deposits naturally, I found that women in Europe have been going to health spas and have been using creams to get rid of cellulite or “unsightly fat deposits” for at least twenty years. American doctors deem this type of fat as a problem, but do not treat it as a “disease of the connective tissue” as the medical community in Europe does.

Cellulite is a gel-like substance made up of fat, toxic waste material and water that is trapped between fibrous tissue just beneath the surface of the skin. Cellulite is primarily a feminine problem due to the higher percentage of fatty tissue in women and because of the greater elasticity of the skin. The fat layer under the skin pops up between this fibrous tissue causing a “bulging of fat” in the subcutaneous layer. In a healthy woman without cellulite, the fat would stay in the dermal layer. This problem happens when the blood vessels deteriorate and deprive the skin of important nutrients. Secondly, the fats clump together and bind to proteins. Water engorges the cells due to the toxicity in the fat tissue. The water dilutes the toxic waste matter and creates a gel-like substance that creates the orange peel appearance of the skin. It can be said that cellulite is an inflammatory process due to:

1. Decreased circulation in the area

2. Loss of capillary networks

3. Excess fluid retained

4. Fat deposition usually hormonally mediated

5. Vascular changes within the dermis.

6. Toxic waste material being stored in less vascular areas of body in the fatty tissue.

7 Steps to Detoxify your Thighs

Some Doctors say that cellulite is caused by damaged, dehydrated skin. I believe this is one cause of cellulite, but it is not the whole truth. The first step to diminishing cellulite is to repair our damaged skin cells and connective tissue. We can do this by following these seven essential steps.

1. The first step for change is to use antioxidants to eliminate free radical damage and promote microcirculation. Vitamin C and Vitamin A are the most important antioxidants for the skin. You cannot grow collagen without Vitamin C. Vitamin A is one of the most important nutrients for keeping the skin healthy and firm.

2. The second key is to increase circulation throughout the body. Gingko biloba increases microcirculation and thus, rids the body of stored toxins. Dry brushing is an important addition to our detoxification regime. Dry brushing for five minutes daily is equal to one half hour of exercise. Use a dry vegetable bristle brush in a circular motion from the toes to the heart. This acts as a manual lymphatic pump to flush toxins and sustain healthy circulation. Use circulation generating essential oils like rosemary and birch to begin breaking up the fatty deposits. Put 20 drops each in 4oz. of a carrier oil such as sesame or almond oil and rub onto buttocks, thighs and hips daily.

3. Eliminate high mucus forming foods and most dairy products especially if not organic. The lymphatic system has a direct impact on the appearance and condition of your skin. 5. Open the pathways of elimination by stimulating the detoxification of the liver, kidneys and the large intestine. When a vacuum cleaner is filled with toxic debris it will not run. We need to clean out our system so that it will function more efficiently. When we are constipated, our system of elimination is “backed up”. The other organs then have to do “double duty”. Sometimes when this happens, too many toxins inundate the system at once and the liver has to store away this waste material for a later day. It does this by storing waste matter in a fat lobule. The liver then sends it away from the major organs and into areas of the body where there is little circulation. These toxins will remain at this location, safe from the important bodily functions. A French herbalist named Maurice Messegue did exhaustive research on cellulite control with women from all over Europe. Only when these women gave up foods containing pesticides and chemicals (most processed food) were they able to decrease the amount of cellulite in their bodies. By stimulating the function of the liver with milk thistle, dandelion or specific individual detoxification formulas targeting the liver, kidneys and the lymphatic system, we can help them function more efficiently. At my clinic in Austin, Texas, I use individual formulas and nutrients specific to each patient to break down the stuck waste material in the cells. General ways to do this are to squeeze one half of a lemon in water three times daily to break down mucus and stimulate the liver. Next, I suggest taking organic, raw apple cider vinegar (1 tablespoon in 8 ounces of water) before meals to stimulate digestive processes and alkalinize the body.

7. Take saunas and hot baths regularly. The most important secret of cellulite detoxification is to heat up and break up the fatty deposits. Heating up the body stimulates the elimination of toxicity and increases your metabolism and circulation. After taking a hot bath, you need to squeeze and twist the thighs and buttocks with your thumb and first two fingers. Do this gently, but firmly. By doing this, you are breaking up the fat and dispersing it into the bloodstream. Then, use firm strokes toward the heart to move the blood and lymph. You can use the dry, vegetable bristle brush for this part. If you don’t have access to a sauna, hot baths are wonderful. Add essential oils like juniper, grapefruit and rosemary to stimulate the liver and eliminate toxins. Other additions can include Epsom salt and baking soda. Use two cups of Epsom salt and one cup of baking soda in the bath. Epsom salt draws out toxins in the body while baking soda alkalinizes the system. Soak for twenty minutes until you sweat. When you get out of the bath, massage your tummy, buttocks and thighs, then rest. Do this at least three times per week.

Ten Tips to Move House Without a Bipolar Episode

There is a stress-meter that lists all the high-stress situations of Western life. At the top is ‘death of a spouse’. Next most stressful is moving house.

People with bipolar disorder usually need to be careful of high-stress situations. While bipolar disorder is not a stress-related illness, when the stress mounts up we may not cope as well as the next person.

I’m moving house at the moment, so I thought I’d share these ten tips for staying well while moving.

1. Plan early if possible. Look for a new place so you get the feel of prices.

2. See your doctor and tell him or her you’re about to move house and ask for any tips or changes to medications.

3. Sort, pack and throw away early. Do a room at a time, packing all the things you won’t need for the next few weeks.

4. Attend to your normal feelings of grief, loss, lost opportunities and expectations. Use CBT or pray your way through. These are normal emotions and do not on their own represent oncoming illness. You can expect these feelings to come in two waves: when you first decide or are told you must move; and then around moving day.

5. Have two ceremonies. The first is a farewell and letting-go ceremony. Christians can use some prayers from the prayer book, or you can write you own ceremony. The second will be a blessing on your new home, and your life in your new neighborhood. You can mark these ceremonies with farewell and housewarming parties too.

6. Act to prevent homelessness. With a friend, brainstorm all the possibilities for your new home and then follow up by investigating locations, prices, and how much space you might have. Go to the local housing service if there is one, and introduce yourself, explaining you’re not homeless but you fear that this is what might happen. That way, if you can’t find a place before the deadline, at least they know you and can help in a timely way.

7. Prepare your children for a new home. Start talking about the need to move house as soon as you know the move is on. But don’t expect them to be enthusiastic! Children experience grief and loss just the same as adults. Matter-of-factly tell them whatever you know is certain. If there is a lot of uncertainty, say if you haven’t decided where to move to, let the children know that, and tell them what options you are considering. Ask for their input. During the time before the move, occasionally ask the children what they are looking forward to, and what they will miss. 9. Have a garage or balcony sale to help fund the move and get rid of unwanted things.

10. Keep your body clock ticking by sticking to a routine of bed and getting-up times in the period before and after the move.

Medications That May Affect Penis Health

According to a recent study in California, USA the more prescription drugs imbibed into the body, the greater the risk of penis health problems such as impotence and erectile dysfunction. It is well known that certain medications can cause problems with erectile health (antidepressants, blood pressure medications, etc.) but also taking multiple drugs simultaneously can cause the chemicals to interact negatively with one another giving the patient additional health problems. US healthcare practitioners continue to advise patients to move towards beneficial lifestyle changes including the regular intake of vitamins and minerals, whilst taking daily exercise, and healthy eating, and to reduce medications wherever possible.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics are prescribed for many ailments: wounds, coughs, sinusitis, surgery, etc. Antibiotic ingredients such as erythromycin, tetracycline, nitrofurantoin and gentamycin have shown to affect male health negatively. Erythromycin interacts with the drug sildenafil, and gentamycin is toxic to the testes. In a study published in Experimental and Toxicological Pathology researchers found that tetracycline was toxic to both the testes and to sperm cells in both animals and humans. Heart Medications

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in adult men in the Western world. For many men, taking prescription medications to control blood pressure is a necessity, even if the negative impact on male sexual performance is understood; in many cases men simply feel they have no option.

Many types of blood pressure medications, including alpha-blockers, beta-blockers, and diuretics, reduce zinc and testosterone levels, damage libido, and adversely affect nerve functioning. These problems occur because the drugs reduce circulation to the peripheral areas, including the male reproductive system and the penis. In addition, beta-blockers may negatively affect the nervous system by sedating the user. The Saving of NASCAR’s Jack Roush

It was Friday evening, and Larry and Donna Hicks were about to watch the six o’clock news in their lakeside home at Palos Verdes Estates outside Troy, Alabama. Hicks was a 52-year-old retired Sergeant Major with the Marines, now working as a conservation enforcement officer for the state of Alabama. He had arrived home from work half an hour earlier, and he and Donna had talked about going to a movie, but decided against it.

The TV news was just starting, when they looked out the window and saw a small plane flying down the shoreline of Palos Verdes Lake.

“I wonder if he knows about the power lines,” Larry said, just as the aircraft suddenly shuddered to a halt, flipped over, and headed straight down into lake. Hicks was already running out the back door as the plane hit the water, yelling behind to his wife, “Call 911! I’m going to see if I can help the pilot.”

Fortunately, Larry’s brother, Wayne, had left a 14-foot aluminum johnboat, with an electric trolling motor, at the lake in preparation for bass fishing that day, then had not shown up. Donna made the call to 911, and ran outside in time to see Larry commandeering the johnboat, headed toward the Air-Cam, which was about 100 yards off shore.

Years before, when Hicks had been stationed at the Marine Air Corps Station in Iwakuni, Japan, he had spent two-and-a-half months, part time, in an intense Search and Rescue program. A major got him into it because he thought Hicks would be good at it since he was muscular and into weight building. The training was specifically directed toward saving pilots who had gone down in water in fixed-wing or rotary-wing planes. Hicks learned how to get pilots out of planes that had crashed upside down. However, he remained in the telecommunications unit, and never had the opportunity to use his specialized training.

The engine of the Air-Cam was hot when it hit Palos Verdes Lake, and the airplane was smoking in the water. High octane aviation fuel from a ruptured fuel tank floated over the surface making greasy patterns. The back half of the aircraft and a broken wing were sticking up from the water. Hicks climbed out of the boat onto the wing and tethered a line to the plane to keep the boat from floating away. The heavy smell of gas assaulted his nostrils. It was only later that he thought about the danger of the plane blowing up.

The water was murky, and Hicks had trouble getting his bearings underwater. The plane had crashed in the middle of an underwater “stump field,” but luckily had missed hitting any trees. The first time down, Hicks ran out of air and was forced back to the surface without locating the pilot. The second time, he felt the back of the man’s neck under his hand. After another trip to the surface, he took a deep breath, and descended a third time.

Larry’s military training–the repeat drill of what to do until it became second nature–took over: “Locate Pilot, Extract Pilot…” Hicks felt for the pilot’s seatbelt; fortunately, it was one he recognized by feel from his training in the military. He released the belt, and the pilot floated into his arms. Hicks swam to the surface, pulling the man with him. The pilot had bones sticking through his legs, and his feet were turned the wrong way.

The man was bleeding through the nose and mouth, and was no longer breathing. He had drowned. The Troy police had arrived on the lake bank by now. Larry yelled to the officers,”He’s not breathing,” and he heard one police officer say to another, “He’s dead.”

Hicks hauled the man up against the wing that was sticking above the water and put a modified Heimlich maneuver under his ribs and pulled up to get the water out of his lungs, then started modified CPR. The inert figure coughed up water and blood, then on the fifth breath, started to breathe. “I’ve got him breathing again,” Hicks yelled to the rescue unit on the shore.

Hicks gripped the wing of the plane with his left hand, lying on his back in the water, supporting the pilot on his chest with his right arm to keep his head above water. He felt a stinging sensation from the aviation fuel, which worsened until he was in great pain. He found out later, the top layer of his skin had burned off.

The rescue unit brought out an extra boat, put the pilot on the backboard and floated him to shore. Larry tried to follow the four members of the rescue team as they walked out of the lake, but his legs gave way. He and the pilot were transported to the Troy hospital.

While Hicks was being treated for the gasoline burns on his upper body, he heard the helicopters arrive to airlift the pilot to the University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham. After a decontamination shower, Hicks was released.

Word was out almost immediately that a light plane had crashed, piloted by celebrity Jack Roush, NASCAR and Winston Cup car owner since 1988. An aircraft aficionado, friends of Roush had arranged for him to fly the Air-Cam, a specialized aircraft built specifically for photography, as a birthday gift.

Roush was initially put on a respirator, with a trauma team working on him. He had inhaled water and gasoline and suffered closed-head injuries, rib fractures, a collapsed lung, compound fractures to his left leg, and broken ankles. He did not remember anything from the time of the accident until he woke up in the hospital that weekend.

Amazingly enough, six days after the accident, Roush was running his business by telephone from his hospital bed. By Sunday, he had arranged for Larry and Donna to be flown by private jet to Birmingham, Alabama, to visit him.

Six weeks later, Roush piloted a plane from his Michigan home and hobbled around on crutches at Dover International Speedway in Dover, Delaware, overseeing his four-car Winston Cup team. Larry and Donna were by his side.

Larry Hicks has no doubt that a Higher Power was at work in Jack Roush’s incredible rescue. If the Air-Cam had hit the high tension power lines instead of the support wires as it did, the plane would have gone down in flames. If it had crashed on the ground or hit a tree in the underwater stump field where it landed, Roush would have been killed instantly. If Larry and Donna had gone to a movie that evening, as they had discussed, or simply been in another part of the house, they would not have seen the plane go down, and Jack Roush would have died. If Wayne Hicks had not left the johnboat ready to go, there would have been no rescue.

But, most amazing of all, Hicks was one of a small percentage of the populace with the specialized knowledge necessary to save a pilot in an upside-down plane from a watery grave. And, one other thing was necessary to save Jack’s life, which is that Hicks is a man of action who did not hesitate to put himself at risk to save a stranger’s life.

Larry Hicks was recognized with many honors as a result of his heroic rescue of Jack Roush, including the Marine Corps Medal of Heroism, the Carnegie Award for Heroism from the Carnegie Foundation, the Kiwanis International Robert P. Connally Medal for Heroism, and the Society of the Sons of the American Revolution Medal for Heroism. The story of the rescue appeared in People magazine, and Larry and Jack were on the cover NASCAR Illustrated.

6 Ways to Stop Those Pesky 11’s Between the Brows

Frowning ages everyone. That repetitive motion of knitting your brows together has consequences and after approximately 80,000 squints, you will begin to see grooves appear on your once smooth forehead.

Imagine yourself as a personnel manager for a busy security company, you are looking for someone to fill a position in the RST of a job that is ongoing – (posts like this are very rarely advertised, these vacancies are normally filled from CV’s that are ‘on file’) how do you get yourself on file? You as personnel manager get anything from 1-10 CV’s a week how do you decide who to put on file? Well it’s pretty easy really as most of the CV’s that you receive do not come with a covering letter you discard those straight away no matter how good the CV looks. It’s rude just to send a CV without introducing yourself and shows you up as a rude amateur.

Most of the CVs that do come with a covering letter are appalling, they are poorly handwritten sometimes on a page torn from a wire bound notebook, they misspell your name, even if the qualifications and experience look okay, very often the letters have a slightly facetious tone and the punctuation is poor. Do these CV’s stay ‘on file’? No, and mostly you won’t even bother to send a rejection letter, the CV ends up (quite rightly) in the bin. So how do you get yourself ‘on file’ and not in the bin

The Covering Letter.

Keep the covering letter short and completely to the point, do not mention too much in this letter that you have already stated in the CV, if you write it by hand ensure that it is neat and legible, and use good quality paper, blue ink is better than black and a fountain pen better than ball-point. Remember that the person who you are writing this letter to knows NOTHING about you except what is written in the letter and the CV, always write the letter to a name e.g. Mr. Smith, if you do not know the name – find out. As a last resort you can send it to a title e.g. Personnel Manager but always try to obtain a name.

An example of a covering letter might go as follows:

Dear Mr. Smith,

I understand from an advertisement that your company has in Yellow Pages that you undertake Close Protection work. I have recently completed a contract overseas (I have recently completed a comprehensive course in Close Protection with) and am now actively seeking another (my first) assignment. I have enclosed a CV which outlines the experience etc, etc. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

The Resume or CV.

The chances are that you will be applying for more than one job so it is worth having a standard CV prepared. A CV should follow a fairly standard layout, it should only be as long as you need to tell the prospective employer what they want to know. If possible keep the CV down to one side of one sheet of A4. Only send off a CV when you are satisfied that its clean and fresh appearance. If it’s badly “dog-eared” or poorly photocopied, it will look like a hand-me-down from a previous (unsuccessful) application and this is not the impression you want to create.

There are two types of CV -“Job Description” and “Skills Profile” – the job description CV is the most common, in the CV all your jobs are listed with your present job first, your last job second etc.

This type of CV is not suitable if you are just entering the CP world as the jobs that you list such as builder, shelf-stacker, milkman, have no direct bearing, far better is the “Skills Profile” CV. First you give a very bare boned listing of your jobs so far – then you list the various skills that you have learned in those jobs. Let’s suppose you have been working in an office for 5 years – initially this looks to have no bearing on the job that you are now applying for, however if you elaborate on the skills side of this job you may end up with something much more interesting and valid e.g.;

1. responsible for advertising budgets

2. lead a team of four

3. Responsible for Training

Personal Details.

Your CV should also give brief details of your education, degrees, as well as your marital status and number of dependents – you should list any hobbies you have as this does give the employer a feel for the personality of the applicant.

Special Situations.

Not everybody has sailed through life from one job to another – what if you have been unemployed, bankrupt or sacked? If you have had a long time off work give a reason in your CV, you do not have to worry about the odd month or three but you must account for longer periods. The employer may think you have been to prison if there is an unexplained gap in your work history of 18 months! A small line such as – May ‘2003 to Oct 2003, traveling in Australia. Or you might write something like Dec. ‘2005 – Feb, 2006 time spent looking for work and attending Bodyguard training courses With xyz company and completing First Aid course with the Red Cross. Do not exaggerate any claims in your CV, you may have to back up these claims in your interview. Never go into too much detail if you have been sacked or left previous employment – just a line like “left because job required skills I didn’t have”, “Felt I was unsuited to this kind of work”, “Company reorganization eliminated position”.

Photos.

Always include a professionally taken photograph on the CV, top right works best, next to your personal details. You can have the 3/4 length photos printed out a stick roll of labels and careful stick one on each CV; or much easier, just have a digital picture you can print directly with the CV.

Following Up.

Keep a list of company and contacts names and when you’ve sent the CV to them – follow up every CV with a phone call..

“Hello, my name is_____ I sent you a CV a few days ago and I was wondering if it reached you okay – Do I have the skills you are looking for, I am in your area next week – can I come along for an interview. So as you can put a face to the name”

All of this helps; there is though a fine line between keeping your name on employers lips and becoming a pain in the arse by pestering them too much. Use your contact list, if you gain some work experience or complete a relevant course – drop them a line like the example below

Dear Mr. Smith,

you will recall that in October I sent you my CV, and you said that you would keep me in mind for any work you may have. I have just completed a comprehensive First Aid Course as well as elementary Russian and would hope that you would update my file. I hope that with these new skills added to my CV you may find a suitable opening for me in the future.

Yours etc.

Specific Jobs.

If you hear of a specific job, then tailor your CV (without lying) to that job. This is easier if you have had your CV prepared on a word processor. Par Level Vs Kanban Methods – Which One For Hospital Material Management?

We have uncovered an opportunity that could mean millions of dollars in savings to individual hospitals, and billions of dollars to the healthcare system nationally in the US and abroad. It has to do with how most hospitals manage supplies, medications and other materials.

Many, maybe most, hospitals manage their inventory of supplies and medications using what is called a “par-level” method. It works like this: a stocking quantity is established for each item, the par level, based on average usage and a target number of days supply. We might, for example, set a goal of maintaining a two-day quantity of material for each supply item. As the material is actually used, we would bring the quantities “up to par” daily, by conducting a physical inventory and restocking the quantity that was consumed. The goal, sensibly, is to not run out of supplies while maintaining a tight control of storage space and inventory quantities. So far so good.

It is interesting to note that this par method of inventory control is not used in a world-class manufacturing environment, although a manufacturer certainly has the same needs and goals for inventory control as a hospital. The suggestion that we do a daily physical inventory for a large number of inventory items would be greeted with astonishment and ridicule. Many world-class manufacturing companies do not even conduct an annual inventory, by sustaining a high level of inventory accuracy through tight controls and cycle counting.

The method of choice in manufacturing for commonly used items is called Kanban. In a Kanban system, as with the par level method, we set a target quantity that we want to maintain. The principal difference is that instead of attempting to bring quantities “up to par” daily, in a Kanban system we set a fixed quantity that we will use to trigger the replenishment of inventory. In a “two-bin” kanban system, for example, we set up two quantities or bins of the same supply, and only refill a bin when it is empty. While the bin is being refilled, we have a second bin to cover usage during the replenishment cycle.

The Kanban method has seven main advantages over a Par-level system:

1. No daily counting is needed. We wait for a bin to be emptied and always replenish the same quantity. Not having to count can save hundreds or thousands of hours per year in most hospitals.

2. It reduces the number of resupply trips. Since we do not refill a Kanban bin daily, but instead wait for it to be empty, the number of replenishment trips can be reduced significantly. The number of replenishment cycles can be cut by 50% or more.

3. Replenishment quantities are fixed. The refilling process is greatly simplified by eliminating the need for counting required by the par system. If we know ahead of time what the refill quantity will be, the item can be stocked in that quantity.

4. It is easier to manage and improve. By tracking the time between replenishment, the stocking quantities can more easily be refined and adjusted over time. This continuous improvement is more difficult to accomplish if all quantities are refilled daily, in varying quantities.

5. Kanban reduces inventory. Experience proves that, with the same target coverage of supplies, a Kanban system will run with up to 50% less inventory than a par system.

6. It is easier to maintain replenishment discipline. Since they do not have to count all inventory locations, or eye-ball the empty bins, supplies handlers find it easier to identify and refill the empty bins, thereby substantially reducing the opportunities for shortages.

7. Kanban promotes good inventory management practices, while the par level does not. In fact, counting everything is essentially impossible and very labor intensive, and most par-level users simply “eye-ball” the bins without counting. Organization and housekeeping, “5S” in lean terms, is much easier to maintain.

For all of these reasons, Kanban is the method of choice for hospital material management, for much of the material that is procured and managed. The gains in productivity, reduced shortages and reduced inventory represent a multi-billion dollar opportunity for the industry.
