St Johns Wort – A Beautiful Red Infusion Oil For Nerve Damage, Inflammation, and Sensitive Skin

St. John's Wort is an infusion oil made from the fresh flowering tops of the Hypericum perforatum plant. It lends a beautiful red color to the oil and is used for muscle and joint pain and inflammation, for nerve-related pain such as neuralgia. It is present in many first-aid preparations.

The active ingredient in St. Louis John's Wort oil is believed to be hypericin, which is found in the viscid oily substance in the glands of the leaves, petals and stems of the plant. The highest concentration is in the leaves, flowers and buds. Hypercin is known as a psychotropic activator of neuronal metabolism. This possibly accounts for it's mood-lifting properties. It is recommended for nerve pain such as neuralgia, sciatica and for some rheumatic pain.

St. John's Wort is an anti-inflammatory oil useful on wounds where there is nerve tissue damage or in infected nerve conditions such as sciatica, tennis elbow or carpal tunnel syndrome. It has also been reported as effective in treating a case of vitiligo (skin condition causing lack of pigmentation resulting in white patches). Hypericin, the red pigment, is being studied as a possible antiviral agent in the management of AIDS.

St. John's Wort was first recorded as being used in ancient Greece. Native Americans also used the herb. It is not recommended that this oil be taken orally as it can cause side effects. However, it is very safe to use this infused oil topically.

I like to use this oil for cases of nerve damage, especially for carpal tunnel, or tennis elbow. It is a great oil for skin care such as burns, bruises, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, sores and ulcers. I like to use it as a base oil to add essential oils. I will often combine it with Calendula infused oil for various skin aliments. This seems to heighten the effectiveness of both.

I like to make my own St. John's Wort maceration, and have given instructions for making macerated oils in another ezine article titled: How to Make Your Own Macerated Oils for Skin Care.

Pituitary tumor Treatment Through Surgery

Disorders of the anterior pituitary gland and the posterior pituitary gland are usually associated with excess or deficient hormone synthesis and secretion. Tumors of the anterior pituitary gland are mutually common contracting a small percentage of all brain tumors. In autopsies done, when the cause of death is not limited to any group of diagnoses, almost one third of those examined have small pituitary tumors.

Predisposing factors are uncommon. Persons with untreated hypofunction of end organs such as the gonads, adrenals or thyroid may be at risk. They may develop hyperplasia initially and then autonomously functioning tissue that secretes the stimulating hormone for the hypofunctional gland. Long term malnutrition, particularly if it is severe, can cause excess growth hormone secretion. These events are logical exit of the negative feedback system, in which the pituitary gland attempts in vain to restore homeostasis by ever-increasing hormone production.

Malignant tumor symptoms include neurological findings like headache caused by pressure on the dura. These nonspecific headings are inconsistent in regard to location and degree of relief from analgesics. The pain is usually dull, unaffected by position, and not accompanied by nausea and visual changes. Sudden relief may accompan Rupture of the dura. With significant escalation, pressure may be applied to the optic chiasm causing bitemporal hemianopsia or loss of vision from the outer or lateral half of each eye. Papilledema may also be a finding. If the tumor becomes large enough to cause pressure on the hypothalamus, unstable body temperature, excessive appetite and psychiatric disorders may develop.

Most patients with pituitary tumors will undergo tumor treatment like surgery, radiation therapy or both. A transsphenoidal hypophysectomy is the removal of a portion or the entire anterior pituitary gland using a route through the sphenoid sinus. It is preferred approach for most anterior pituitary tumors because it eliminates manipulation of the brain substance that occurs with previously used frontal craniotomy approach and there is no visible scar.

The incision is made at the base of the upper lip where it joins the gum. After the floor of the sella tursica is exposed, the dura mater over the pituitary gland is opened and the tumor is removed. A small piece of fascia and muscle obtained from the thigh of the patient is used to secure a tight seal at the floor of the sella tursica and prevent cerebrospinal fluid.

The sphenoid sinus is not packed. The nostrils are packed with vaseline gauze to facilitate proper reapproximation of the nasal mucosa. Nasopharyngeal airways may be placed prior to packing to allow the patient to breathe through the nose during the immediate postoperative period. The nasal packing is usually removed 2 days after surgery.

Alterations in pituitary function after pituitary surgery will vary according to the preoperative hormone dysfunctions of the patient, amount of pituitary tissue damaged or removed, and extent of postoperative edema in the region of the hypothalamus and the pituitary. Cortisol may need to be replaced at levels associated with major stressors during surgery. Surgery is an effective pituitary tumor treatment. It is one of the methods that patients and the medical team decide to do.

Dementia and Stroke

Dementia can be caused by stroke, too. Despite common-knowledge, dementia is not only borne from Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and is actually caused by many diseases, one of which is stroke.

Stroke remains the leading cause of long-term disability worldwide. Known as brain attack, stroke mostly affects the brain, which when damaged may lead to physical, functional, and mental disorders, one of which is dementia. Stroke triggers dementia when there is a high concentration of the blood protein ApoE4 who transports cholesterol in the blood. ApoE4 is also linked to cause Alzheimer's disease.

There are many kinds of dementia and the most common one is caused by Alzheimer's Disease. Stroke is also the second cause of dementia after Alzheimer. Aside from stroke, dementia can also be caused by frontotemporal disorders, parkinsonian, and lewy bodies. Each type of dementia has its own effects on the victim resulting to unique patters of behavioral changes.

The type of dementia is determined on which part of the brain is actually affected. But generally, dementia is a brain disorder in which multiple aspects of brain function are persistently compromised in way that interferes with the person's daily normal functions.

Dementia due to stroke or also called vascular / multi-infarct dementia, affects the patient through short-term memory loss, poor concentration, inattention, difficulty to follow instruction, confusion, poor judgment, psychosis, depression, mood and behavioral changes, easily lost in unfamiliar surroundings, and laughing or crying inappropriately.

Treatment of dementia involves enhancement of vascular health, slowing the progress of cognitive decline, and treating symptoms directly related to it such as medication, behavioral intervention, and surgery. Caregiving for stroke victims with dementia requires close attention and extended patience toped with empathy for the patient who is already undergoing a lot with out much of patient wanting it.

Stroke patients with dementia should be cared for by the caregiver by using distractions to control irritable behavior, using visuals to reorient the patient and avoid confusion, establishing a daily routine of activity, simplifying self-care tasks, and communicating with short simple sentences. In short, the caregiver's attitude and tactics are very important to ensure the stroke patient's recovery.

Since dementia appears over later time, it's a must that one is alert of any adverse behavioral changes in the stroke patient to ensure the patient getting immediate medical attention and treatment. A series of tests will be given to the stroke patient before they will be diagnosed of having dementia. A medical interview followed by a neuropsychological testing are tools that will be used to identify if a stroke patient really has vascular dementia.

Dementia can be caused by stroke over time, which heightens the need for caregivers to be aware of its symptoms to ensure appropriate attention is given in a timely manner. To avoid dementia, including NeuroAid at the early stages of a stroke patient's rehabilitation program will help protect neuronal and brain injuries on top of neurological functions recovery.

Natural Remedies For Alopecia

Most people experience this problem as they age. However, people are discovering that their hair is becoming finer, bald areas have emerged and the scalp is clearly visible when looking in the mirror. This not only affects men, it affects women too – of all ages, including children and teenagers!

Alopecia is the medical term used to describe baldness. For many men and women experiencing alopecia, can be emotionally devastating and traumatic. The quality of life is often affected, which may lead to depression and severe anxiety.

This condition can affect any body part that is covered with hair including the scalp, eyebrows, beard or pubic area. There are several types of male or female hair loss that are classified by the cause. Some are permanent while other types are temporary.

Permanent hair loss can be classified by the following:

-The pattern baldness in men, also known as androgenetic, usually affects men in their teens or early 20s. Androgenetic alopecia is distinguished by having hair on the sides of the head and balding on top.

-The pattern baldness in women, also known as androgenetic. It is rare that complete hair loss for women – can lose hair in patches and generally only begin to thin in the front, sides or crown.

-Alopecia (as scars) also known as scarring alopecia. This type of hair loss destroys the hair follicle and the follicle is replaced by scar tissue – causes persistent alopecia. Sometimes, there are no symptoms and hair loss is gradual. In other cases, itching, burning or pain may occur. If the scalp is affected, some flakes and redness may be evident.

Temporary hair loss

-Area tends to occur in small, round bald spots. Hair loss or bald patches usually occur on the scalp but can also affect other areas such as eyebrows, eyelashes or beard. If hair loss occurs at a point only, usually in the head, called alopecia areata monolocularis. If the hair is lost in the whole scalp is alopecia totalis. If hair loss occurs in the whole body, including pubic hair, this condition is called alopecia universalis

-Telogen effluvium is a condition characterized by sudden loss of hair as a result of a disruption in the normal growth cycle of hair. Hair begin to thin and fall usually from the scalp, which is more sensitive when you wash or comb your hair.

-Traction alopecia occurs as a result of certain hairstyles such as braids, tight ponytails, cornrows, buns, rolls or twists that are used regularly. It is caused by pulling (traction chronic) the hair follicle and samples of this type of involve tension headaches, itchy scalp, red, bald patches at random and hair breakage around the scalp

The causes of specific types of alopecia include:

-The pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) occurs as a result of heredity factors. It affects the age at which you start to get bald, pattern, speed of development and degree of hair loss

-Alopecia (scarring that) scar is permanent and occurs when the hair follicle is scarred and damaged by inflammation. This condition appears in many conditions of skin disease.

-Alopecia areata is defined as an autoimmune disease. It is believed that genetic factors may make it develop.

-Telogen effluvium is caused by a change to your normal cycle as a result of physical or emotional stress (high fever, weight loss, loss of a family member, nutritional deficiencies or surgery)

-Traction alopecia is due to the hairstyles that pull your hair back too tightly or excessive hairstyling

Other factors that may contribute include poor nutrition, certain medications, diseases such as diabetes and lupus as well as medical treatments such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Hormonal changes such as pregnancy, menopause, an active thyroid or vagu and infections of the scalp can cause hair loss.
A hair-pulling disorder known as trichotillomania is a mental illness that makes people have the irresistible urge to pull hair from your scalp or any other area of your body. In addition, hair treatments such as bleaching, dyeing, tightening braiding or hot curlers can cause scarring and hair follicles of hair reduction.

Diagnosis of Alopecia
The diagnosis of alopecia is based on your physical symptoms, family and medical history. Your doctor will want to know the pattern and rate of hair loss.

Certain tests can also be performed to determine the cause of hair loss and to classify it:

-Pull test where several hairs to see how many are thrown out

-The skin scrapings involve a sample of skin or hairs taken from the scalp to determine if an infection is the cause of hair loss

-The biopsy involves removing a small section of the deer layers of the skin (this test is usually done when it is difficult to confirm a diagnosis)

-Other health tests to determine whether other diseases cause hair loss

Do I Have Vaginal Dryness Or a Yeast Infection?

Both yeast infections and vaginal dryness are problems that many women end up dealing with at some point in life. However, you want to make sure that you know which one you are dealing with, since they both have very different treatments. Not sure whether you are just dealing with vaginal dryness or you are dealing with a nasty yeast infection? Well, here’s a closer look at some of the symptoms and treatments for both so you will be able to figure out which one you have, how to treat it, and when you need to seek medical attention for your problem.

The Symptoms of Vaginal Dryness

Understanding the symptoms of vaginal dryness is important. Usually this condition brings with it dryness that is unusual, dryness and discomfort that occurs during sexual intercourse, itching, pain, discomfort, and in some cases there can also be an odor. If this problem is not properly treated, it can get worse over time and the symptoms can get much more severe.

The Symptoms of a Yeast Infection

The symptoms of a yeast infection are different than that of vaginal dryness, although they may have a few things in common. You’ll find that pain during intercourse often comes with a yeast infection too, as well as the discomfort and itching. However, there is a discharge that comes with a yeast infection that should make it fairly easy to differentiate from dealing with vaginal dryness. Usually the discharge is whitish in color, and many say it looks a bit like small curd cottage cheese. In most cases there is not a smell that comes with a yeast infection.

Treatments for Vaginal Dryness

There are many great treatments available for vaginal dryness today. Taking an all-natural Omega-7 supplement can help resolve your vaginal dryness without adding unnecessary chemical to your body. Sometimes just eating differently or even making sure that you stay hydrated with plenty of water can provide you with some help as well.

Treatments for Yeast Infection

Yeast infections are miserable, but they can be treated. There are many over the counter options available for yeast infection treatment. Eating yogurt can help, and even using plain yogurt right on the problem can help to take the yeast infection away. Wearing cotton clothing that is loose can be helpful, and there are many herbal remedies that are also available to help treat problems with yeast infections.

When You Need Medical Help

In some cases you may need medical help for your problem. If you are dealing with vaginal dryness, sometimes it’s a result of lack of estrogen. To discuss your options, you should seek the advice of your healthcare professional. If you’ve never had a yeast infection, you should see your doctor as well to make sure it is really a yeast infection. In some cases you could end up having bacterial vaginosis, which many women mistakenly think is a yeast infection, and this can be a serious problem for you. So, getting medical attention can be important.

Surgery is an Efficient Way to Treat Glaucoma

Glaucoma is one of the foremost reasons for blindness in the world today. This does not have to be so, as it can be treated successfully if it is discovered early. There are a few ways to treat glaucoma and the most radical one is by surgery. This treatment is done after the other options have failed.

Glaucoma is a term that doctors have given to four eye diseases. What the four types of it have in common is how they destroy vision. It occurs when the optic nerve becomes destroyed due to pressure or lack of blood supply. Doctors are not sure exactly why this happens in some people and not in others.

The people at highest risk of this disease are black people, people over 40, and anyone with a history of the disease in their family. Doctors will first try to treat glaucoma with medications, but if this does not work then a surgical procedure is the last option. There are two types of operations that can be performed to treat it; traditional and laser.

Both traditional and laser surgery can make a world of difference in treating glaucoma. Doctors will only turn to an operation as a last resort after every other treatment has failed to work. Sometimes a glaucoma operation can cause cataracts, but they are very treatable. Laser trabeculoplasty is an operation used for open angle glaucoma.

This operation is safe and fast and requires almost no recuperation time. The laser is aimed at drainage channels in the eye; a tiny hole will be made to help the fluid drain out. Trabeculectomy is a traditional surgical operation. In this operation a tiny hole is made in the white part of the eye, to help in fluid drainage. Recovery time from this type of operation can be up to eight weeks.

Drain implantation involves putting a microscopic plastic tube inside the eye to improve drainage and pressure. The last type of operation is cyclophotocoagulation. In this procedure a laser is used on the surface of the eye to try to disrupt the part of the eye that produces fluid. This procedure is the most dangerous and can cause a decrease in vision, which is why doctors use it as a last resort.

Having surgery for glaucoma is not something that anyone wants to have to go through. The good news is that if a person takes care of their eye health and gets regular exams, then there is a chance that they may never have to have a glaucoma operation. Taking care of yourself is always the smartest thing to do.

Health Club Marketing is As Easy As Thanking Your Members!

Thank you notes, as part of your overall health club marketing strategy, are easily one of the best ways to get prospects to come to you. Nearly all of your competitors are missing this incredibly simple, yet rarely used form of health club marketing. Write thank you notes to guests, new members, old members, associates, and employees.

For every person who tours your facility, follow up with a thank you note. Whether they join or not, they should receive a thank you note in their mailbox or email box within 48 hours. Obviously, this emphasizes the importance of collecting addresses and email addresses on a guest register. An example of a guest thank you letter would be, “It was great meeting with you today. I sincerely hope you will consider becoming a member. I know you’ll love it here! When you’re ready, just drop in or call me at 555-555-5555.”

Even those people you feel won’t be returning and feel it may be a waste of time, you will be nicely surprised by the number of those people who will respond positively to a thank you note. I know this is hard to do, but it is very important. They’ll be researching other fitness competitors in the area as well and will probably need a couple of days to compare before deciding. How many thank you notes do you think they will receive during those days of considering? Only one…Yours! Send the thank you note right after the presentation is finished, preferably on the same day. Let the note include only your thanks. Do not try to resell them in the thank you note. Assure them that you are there if needed and include your contact number and email address.

All of your new members should also receive a thank you note immediately after signing up as part of your health club marketing strategy. Your note to new members can say, “Thank you for becoming a member! Do not hesitate to ask if we can do anything to enable you to reach your fitness goals.   Included you will find a few day passes for your friends. We will be happy to pay for a month of your membership for every friend you send us! Thanks again!”

Your current members like to feel appreciated too so do not limit thank you notes to just your prospects and new members, especially since they’re the ones paying your bills. At least every six months, your entire membership base should be sent a letter of thanks. Something straight to the point; “Just a quick Thank You for being our member! Without you we would not exist and we sincerely value your decision to continue to be a part of our family. If you need any help reaching your fitness goals, please do not hesitate to contact us.” If you like, you can also mention a gift. “Be sure to drop by the front desk to sign up for our email newsletter and receive a free water bottle!”

And last but not least, do not forget to thank your employees, business partners, and area retailers; anyone who has helped with your promotions, or anyone who has helped refer you members and improve your business. It displays good character. When was the last time you received a thank you note from an associate or a boss? The answer is probably never. When you mail or email a note of thanks to one of your employees or associates, it is not forgotten for a long time. So send a quick thank you to all of your employees, no matter how much they may tease you for being a softy, deep down they will feel valued. Same goes for anyone in your community who often goes above and beyond in helping you build your business.

Get into the habit of sending thank you notes and immediately work your way into the hearts and minds of your prospects, members, and everyone else who your fitness business relies on!

How to Treat a Wound With Homeopathic Medicines

Learning how to treat a wound with homeopathic medicines can be quite straight forward. First, a wound can become infected quite easily. The use of the most appropriate homeopathic medicine will prevent any infection from occurring. It will also clear up an existing infection. The tissue of the wound are damaged and they need the best support to facilitating healing.

The homeopathic medicine Calendula can be effectively used both as an internal healing medicine as well as topically. This is unlike a close relative, Arnica. Arnica must never be applied topically to an open wound as it will cause irritation. To prevent that mistake, it is better not to have any Arnica cream or other topical treatment. Use it internally and it will do just as good a job, better in most cases.

However, the topical use of Calendula will compliment its internal use. If you only have Calendula as an internal medicine, then you can make a solution by putting one pillule in a container of clean, preferably filtered or spring water. This can then be used to wash the wound gently, or to spray into it, if it is too sensitive to clean.

This can also be used to soak the dressing before applying to the wound. Wounds heal better when exposed to the open air, so only cover it with a dressing as long as you need to, sometimes to protect it from further damage or from leaking onto your bedding.

Keep taking the Calendula for several days, to ensure the fastest healing of the wound. Other homeopathic medicines may be needed to complete the healing of damaged nerves and bones. But for a wounded, it's hard to better Calendula.

Flu Threat: Lessons from Past Pandemics (Part I)

Flu and the Immune System

Influenza ("flu") strikes every year and afflicts millions. Under normal circumstances, flu is not considered a general public health risk. Of course, any disease must be taken seriously for two reasons.

First of all, any disease, including flu, can become dangerous through complications.

But, let's also understand the far more important issue with regard to flu (and not just avian flu) … but disease in general. Every flu is a problem primarily because our immune system gets compromised through life's stresses. Put bluntly, flu is "caught" by people because their immune system is not functioning well.

Immune system dysfunction and weakening events from constant stress, constant threat of danger, constant deprivation of nutritional needs, and constant exposure to vicissitudes of life. Flu … even deadlier strains such as avian flu, can be the result.

Specifically, flu impacts us due to an under active immune system. This is true of many diseases such as cancer, Hepatitis B and C, TB, strep, shingles as well as flu. Other disease conditions are the result of an over active immune system.

What makes this an issue of late is the fact that only recently has science begun to understand the immune system, its complications, its sheer power to fend off disease conditions and its power to aid in the healing process.

Remember that as we introduce the potential of avian flu.

Avian Flu and Pandemics of the Past

To understand the avian flu threat, we need to understand flu pandemics of the past. Flu epidemics have been explosive and unusually deadly. In past centuries, flu probably spread so fast due to humans and animals living in close proximacy.

As you probably know, avian flu is a complex disease mutated from flu that kills birds. But, avian flu has mutated successfully to strike human life. Close proximate of animal and human life allows for such mutations to develop and spread.

Flu can spread like wildfire. The pandemic flu of 1580 began in Asia, spreading over all continents in less than a year. The flu engulfed all of Europe in less than six months.

That's the problem with flu breakouts. Flu pandemics hit like the proverbial flash flood. A highly contagious flu virus can hit populations that have little or no specific antibody immunizations to the disease, infect a quarter of the population, outstrip societal response capability, disrupting societal health and economy.

The fear today is that avian flu will strike suddenly and will spread globally in a matter of mere months.

There were three flu pandemics of the 20th century. They are well documented as to origin, spread, and impact. Those flu pandemics occurred in 1918-19, 1957-58, and 1968-69.

The flu pandemic of 1918-19 killed upwards of 40 million people. No doubt, society did not have the tools nor understanding to stop the plague. However, if ever there was an argument for immune debilitation, it's war weariness.

Almost every author who writes about this flu pandemic notes the fact the world was at war. But, that was not a mere footnote. It was a major contributor to society's incapacity to restrain, much less stop the flu plague.

War brings unique circumstances, to say the least. War brings a strain to everything including the immunity capacity of the survivors. If flu occurs in compromised immune systems, war guarantees the stress and deprivation which is often the prelude to plague:

"soldiers live in horrid conditions and return to a disrupted life but the effect on their immune system follows them into peace time … and plague,

"loss of loved ones brings its stresses to the emotions which affects the immune system,

"constant anxiety for soldiers and loved ones even though they return safely, brings its emotional traumas and immune system depletion,

"loss of hygienic conditions weakens resistance and breeds viral and bacterial conditions,

"depression economy partnerships poverty and its consequences to human quality of life,

"uncertainty of safe living conditions (bombing, terrorism, battle, mob actions)

during war takes its own toll on the body

"disrupted economies, making recovery long, difficult and uncertain,

"work hours longer and work conditions harsher, pay less,

"crime, destruction, barbarism frightening or actual,

"whole economics perish, trade and commerce uncertain,

"political uncertainties,

"peace often brings more severe dislocation and hardship (this was especially the case after World War I)

"all populations suffer nutritional deprivation, with few exceptions

When flu strikes after such conditions, scientists often misjudge the fact that the victims, deemed "healthy", really were compromised through the war and peace time consequences. The generation, which was victimized by the "Spanish flu" of 1918-1919, was in the age range of 15 – 35 … the very age which includes:

"Soldiers,

"single parents,

"factory workers,

"teens called upon to assume unusual responsibilities on the home front

"workers in their prime, needed on all fronts …

"medical and other service personnel exposed to a constant need for their services,

Their "after the war" physical let down is almost reminiscent of what happens to people after particularly long periods of stress … They fall prey to flu, colds, and infection.

Why the flu? To answer that question, consider the physical impact upon athletes from their workouts.

It is now known that after a heavy workout, whatever other benefits accrue to the body, there is one clear draw back. The oxidized radicals that formed take the body several days to get over … leaving the body open to radical damage and some internal harm. (See my article: "Antioxidants, Free Radicals, and Sports Nutrition"

New research suggests glyconutritional supplement taken before, during, and especially after workouts helps the body get over the radical burden in a matter of hours, not days.

Now, if recent research shows that athletic stress takes days to get over, often leaving damage to organs and tissues in its wake (especially if it is a habitual practice), why are we surprised at the massive flu fall after the First World War – a war which was worldwide in its scope, as was the flu pandemic which followed it?

Perhaps, before we consider avian flu in the second article, we should realize there is a strong scientific test that recognizes glyconutrition is a way to prepare and deal with the sunset of deadly flu … and potentially other pandemic possibilities.

Read the following testimony before Congress when doing further research on flu, avian or otherwise.

"In instances of abnormal, epidemic, or virulent infectious agent exposure, glyconutrient supplementation has been found effective for enhancing general immune functions and defense. much higher level that is effective against infectious agents. "

Causes and Solutions For Sciatic Nerve Pain

Sciatic Nerve Treatment and Chiropractic Manipulations

Sciatica pain originates in the lower back and radiates down one or both legs. The pain may be intense, moderate, or minimal, and occasional, frequent, or constant.

Physicians term sciatica as a radiating or referred pain, or as neuralgia. This pain is often dull, achy, sharp, or even similar to an electric shock.

Causes of Sciatica Pain

Sciatica pain is not a disorder, but a symptom of compression of the sciatic nerve. The most common causes are spinal disorders due to:

– partial dislocation of a vertebra in lumbar spine
– herniated or bulging discs
– postural problems
– sitting on one's back pocket wallet

Sciatica pain may sometimes be due to certain non-spinal conditions such as diabetes and chronic constipation and pregnancy, childbirth, infections or tumors.

Piriformis syndrome also causes pain similar to sciatica. The Piriformis muscle in the lower spinal region and connects to the thigh. It is crucial for the rotation of the hips. When this muscle shortens or spasms due to an injury, hip arthritis, or difference in leg length, it pinches the sciatic nerve. The pinched nerve causes pain, numbness and tingling in the buttocks and along the path of the sciatic nerve.

Treatment of Sciatica Pain

Conventional sciatic nerve treatment involves symptomatic pain relief through non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs and / or muscle relaxants. The problem is that the pain is caused due to the pinched nerve, and medications can not correct that. Surgery may lead to irreversible changes in the disc or bones. Another problem is presented by the fact that sciatica pain gets worse with bed rest.

Chiropractic manipulations play an important role in alternative treatment modalities. Even in conventional treatments of sciatica pain, the initial step is stretching exercises, massage and avoidance of activities that add to the pain.

Chiropractic Treatment of Sciatica Pain

Chiropractic treatment of the pinched sciatic nerve is based on the scientific principle that the cause of the pain is the restricted spinal movement due to reduced functionality and performance. Chiropractic care is drug-free and non-invasive, which means that there is no risk of side effects.

A chiropractor employs various methods for treating sciatica pain. The most common and effective among them is a comprehensive manipulation of the dislocations that have occurred in the patient's body. This involves application of gentle and minimal pressure, or fast high velocity tensions to restore the position of the misaligned vertebrae in the column column.

In addition, a chiropractor may employ cold therapy and / or heat from ultrasound. Cold therapy is an effective way of reducing inflammation and pain relief. Heat produced from gentle sound waves from an ultrasound increases circulation and reduces muscle spasms.

It is important that you get chiropractic care from a qualified chiropractor. Chiropractic practitioners undergo training in colleges where techniques of treating partial dislocation of joints or organs are taught.

Like all alternative therapies, chiropractic care is also based on the self-healing capacity of the body. Chiropractic care does not seek to cure, but instead helps to restore the spine to its original position so that the herniated disc does not compress the sciatic nerve.

A qualified chiropractor will refer you to another sciatic nerve treatment if the condition is not within the scope of chiropractic care.

PEMF 100 Year History! Pulsed Electromagnetic Field History!

Five hundred years ago, Paracelsus a Swiss physician and alchemist, wondered if diseases could be manipulated by magnets, using lodestones as the best magnets available then.

But, natural lodestones are quite weak and few people paid much attention to his ideas until the discovery of carbon-steel magnets in the 1700′s. During the 1800′s, most of the discoveries relating electricity to magnetism were made by the early pioneers of our modern technical world, men such as Gauss, Weber, Faraday and Maxwell among others One of the more interesting magnetic theories postulates something called “Magnetic Field Deficiency Syndrome.” It is offered as an explanation of biomagnetic effects by Dr. Kyochi Nakagawa of Japan. The Earth’s magnetic field is not fixed in position or strength. In the last hundred years, it has weakened on the average by about 6 percent. In the last thousand years, it has fallen nearly 30 percent.

Dr. Nakagawa argues that since humans evolved in a magnetic field, it is necessary for proper health. A falling magnetic field puts us at risk and magnetic therapy makes up the deficit. The truth is, no one really understands the mechanisms by which magnetic fields affect human health.

There are many theories but very little agreement. It is a problem as complicated as a human being, concerning dozens of organs and thousands of different molecules. Just because you can’t explain something, doesn’t mean it can’t happen. For two hundred years, it has been possible to build magnets from coils of wire powered by electricity called electromagnets. Such devices can be pulsed to produce magnetic fields that change very rapidly. This opens a whole new world of medical applications since changing magnetic fields can induce tiny electrical currents in human tissue. Pulsing electromagnetic therapy is approved by the FDA to promote the healing of serious bone fractures. And powerful electromagnets are used in brain and muscle research to generate currents strong enough to fire nerves that trigger sensations and flex muscles. To date, there have been many basic research studies and many clinical trials of Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy.

Historically, as far back as 1890, the American Electro-Therapeutic Association conducted annual conferences on the therapeutic use of electricity and electrical devices by physicians on ailing patients. Some involved current flow through the patient, while others were electrically powered devices. At first, only direct current (DC) devices were utilized in the medical doctor’s office for relieving pain.

PEMF has a long history dating back 100 years to Nicola Tesla

More PEMF Facts and History

The Greek physician Galen noted the cleansing powers of magnetism in his book De Simplicum Medicamentorum Temperamentis Ac Facultatibus around 200 B.C. The word magnet comes from the ancient Greek magnes lithos, meaning “stone from Magnesia,” an area of Greece that was known for its volcanic rocks with magnetic attributes.

We now know the mineral in these rocks is magnetite. Magnetic therapy was already practiced in China around 2000 B.C., as recorded in The Yellow Emperor’s Book of Internal Medicine. In that ancient medical text, “magnetic stones” were advocated to correct health imbalances. (Lawrence 1998/1) In the Middle Ages magnetic treatment was delivered by placing “lodestones” on the body. Lodestones, or “guiding stones,” were so named because of their use in navigational compasses by Viking, European and Arab sailors.

At the end of the 19th century the electron was discovered and electro-magnetism was brought into the realm of science on the atomic level. Albert Einstein showed that electricity and magnetism are not discrete phenomena, but different aspects of the same phenomenon. (Encyclopedia Britannica Vol. 18 15th Ed. 1991/2) Medical textbooks included magnetism and electricity as therapeutic alternatives for insomnia, fatigue, arthritis, pain and convulsions. Magnetic boots, rings, girdles, caps and ointments were available in mail-order catalogues. At the same time Daniel David Palmer, Canadian fishmonger turned “magnetic healer” founded Palmer’s School of Magnetic Cure in Davenport, Iowa. When in 1895 he began applying short-lever manipulations to the spine with great effect, the Palmer School of Chiropractic was born.

Mention the word “magnet” and the word “therapy” together in the same sentence in North America today and many people start to backpedal. Several historical events explain why this is so. Magnetic therapy became shrouded in mystery in part because of Franz Anton Mesmer, an 18th century German physician and mathematician. He wrote his doctoral thesis on gravitational fields in human health. He postulated that the body had “magnetic poles” and that these poles move out of alignment with the universal magnetic flow causing all illness. He called magnetism within the body “animal magnetism.” His patients sometimes fainted or went into convulsions in his Paris salon, claiming that they had been “mesmerized.” Mesmer’s notions of magnetism gradually became equated with hypnotic suggestion.

Magnetic therapy as a branch of medicine and as an area of clinical research fell into further disfavor in North America as a result of the Abraham Flexner’s report on “Medical Education in the United States and Canada,” released in 1908. At the time of the Flexner Report, Drs. Will and Charlie Mayo, with their father, William Worrall Mayo, were still in the early years of the world’s first group medical practice in the Minnesota frontier town of Rochester. The Mayo Clinic was an impressive display of great wisdom and forethought. By contrast, leaches, bloodlettings, elixirs and potions were also commonplace in most other parts of the United States and Canada. The rise in power of political medicine and the shift to nearly 100% dependence on pharmaceuticals for health led to an unfortunate period of dormancy, lasting 60 years, until the mid 1970s.

Beginning immediately after World War II, Japan began generating various electromagnetic wave shapes by changing electrical currents. This modality quickly moved to Europe, first in Romania and the former Soviet Union. From 1960 to 1985, nearly every European country designed and manufactured its own magnetic therapy systems. Todorov published the first book on modern electromagnetic field therapy in 1982 in Bulgaria. This work summarized clinical observations using magnetic fields to treat 2700 patients with 33 different pathologies.

The modern clinical application of electro-biology in North America began in 1971 when Friedenberg described their success in the healing of a nonunion fracture treated with 10 micro amps of direct current delivered with stainless steel electrodes. Avoiding the invasive nature of Friedenberg’s direct currents, Dr. Andrew Bassett at Columbia University Medical Center introduced a new approach for the treatment of non-healing bone fractures and pseudarthroses that employed very specific, biphasic low frequency electromagnetic signals. Public awareness also increased in the mid-1970s amidst reports of successful enhancement of the speed and endurance of racehorses treated with electromagnetic fields. Based on the published work of Dr. Bassett, in 1979 the FDA allowed electromagnetic fields to be used in the USA for non-union and delayed union fractures. A decade later the FDA allowed the use of pulsed radiofrequency electromagnetic fields for the treatment of pain and edema in superficial soft tissues. It is now commonly accepted that weak electromagnetic fields are capable of initiating various beneficial biological processes including healing for delayed fractures, pain relief, and modulation of muscle tone and spasm.

Having healthy cells is not a passive process. Active, regular tuning-up of our cells is not only feasible, but also necessary to slow aging and reduce the risk of cell dysfunction. We are, after all, only as healthy as our cells. Imperceptible cell dysfunction that is not corrected early can lead to disease. Fine-tuning can be done daily in only minutes, using pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs). In addition, when there is a known imbalance (when symptoms are present) or there is a known disease or condition, PEMF treatments, used either alone or along with other therapies, can often help cells rebalance dysfunction faster.

PEMF works to:

· Reduce pain, inflammation, the effects of stress on the body, and platelet adhesion.

· Improve energy, circulation, blood and tissue oxygenation, sleep quality, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, the uptake of nutrients, cellular detoxification and the ability to regenerate cells.

· Balance the immune system and stimulate RNA and DNA.

· Accelerate repair of bone and soft tissue.

· Relax muscles.

PEMFs have been used extensively for decades for many conditions and medical disciplines, and results can be seen in animals as well as humans. The National Institutes of Health have made PEMFs a priority for research. In fact, many PEMF devices have already been approved by the FDA, some specifically to fuse broken bones, wound healing, pain and tissue swelling, and treat depression. Most therapeutic PEMF devices are considered safe by various standards and organizations.

What are PEMFs and how do they work?

Science teaches us that everything is energy. Energy is always dynamic and, therefore, has a frequency; it changes by the second or minute, for example, at the very least.

All energy is electromagnetic in nature. All atoms, chemicals and cells produce electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Every organ in the body produces it own signature bio electromagnetic field. Science has proven that our bodies actually project their own magnetic fields and that all 70 trillion cells in the body communicate via electromagnetic frequencies. Nothing happens in the body without an electromagnetic exchange. When the electromagnetic activity of the body ceases, life ceases.

Physics, that is, electromagnetic energy, controls chemistry. This in turn controls tissue function. Disruption of electromagnetic energy in cells causes impaired cell metabolism, whatever the initial cause. This happens anywhere in the disease process.

PEMFs address impaired chemistry and thus the function of cells – which in turn, improves health. PEMFs deliver beneficial, health-enhancing EMFs and frequencies to the cells. Low frequency PEMFs of even the weakest strengths pass right through the body, penetrating every cell, tissue, organ and even bone without being absorbed or altered! As they pass through, they stimulate most of the electrical and chemical processes in the tissues. Therapeutic PEMFs are specifically designed to positively support cellular energy, resulting in better cellular health and function.

Devices that produce PEMFs vary by a number of important features: frequency, waveform, strength, and types of stimulators. Frequencies can be simple or complex; and high, medium or low. Intensity can also be high, medium or low.

No “one-size” treatment fits all situations. Most PEMF devices help to varying degrees depending on the problem or condition, but selecting the wrong device may produce unsatisfactory results. Since the body is complex, PEMFs are ideal devices to be able get good results without needing a myriad of different treatments.

Most people recognize that oxygen, food, and water are extremely essential aspects of well being. Interestingly, very few folks understand that Magnetic Resonance Stimulation, (sometimes referred to as “MRS” or PEMF with means “Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields”), is also crucial for every living thing on Earth. Actually NASA, (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and RKA, (the Russian Federal Space Agency), have been using MRS and PEMF Therapy to help prevent magnetic deficiency disorders in their space-traveling explorers for many years. And, since the earliest space missions, many studies have shown that living human tissue and cells absolutely need PEMF.When these magnetic fields are so important to life as we know it, why haven’t you heard of PEMF or MRS as often as you have the need to drive 8 glasses of water a day? Great question. In the past, people didn’t really need to concern themselves with PEMF.

The Earth supplied adequate amounts and people lived a lot differently than we do now. They were outdoors more often and always receiving sufficient quantities of MRS naturally.Recently, however, modern life has changed the way humans interact with nature and people have altered the Earth’s ability to produce PEMF. People have realized the benefits of PEMF Therapy and have increasingly sought out answers. In the past, man lived outside or in buildings made of natural materials, (such as huts and adobe homes).

Humans also spent a lot of time outside farming crops and hunting. But now, many people spend large quantities of time inside metal and concrete buildings. They work in them, shop in them, and go home to sleep in them. Many people no longer need to farm or hunt and may spend as little as 10% of their time actually outdoors. In the past, people travelled by horseback or on camels or other animals – outside and in touch with nature. But today, we find ourselves increasingly stuck in cars and subway cars and other metal and plastic and man-made modes of transportation. People also wear shoes, often with rubber soles rather than walking around barefoot or in shoes made from natural materials. All of these things separate us from the Earth’s natural PEMF.Additionally, the PEMF that our planet IS producing is actually about 50% weaker than it was in the 1700?s. The reasons for this decline are unclear but some scientists believe it is linked to other environmental issues. Our modern lives also bombard us with unnatural, (aka “bad”) PEMF from PCs, laptops, notebooks, cellular telephones, TVs, mp3 players and other devices. Our bodies are being assaulted on all sides and may be literally starving for PEMF. PEMF bed supplies users with all-natural,

Earth based PEMF.This device allows peoples to bask in a relaxing bath of natural PEMF which allows to recharge the body’s batteries by restoring a natural balance to the body. The PEMF has been shown to be able to increase energy, improve mental focus, reduce pain, reduce inflammation, and allow folks to sleep better at night. It has also been a successful way to help prevent certain illnesses and even helps to facilitate relaxation and enhance people’s mood.

They can be. Evidence is mounting that a new form of pollution called “electrosmog” is a very real threat because it is disruptive to cell metabolism. Manmade, unnatural EMFs come from electrical wiring and equipment, for example, power lines, communications towers, computers, TVs, cell phones – everything from the wiring in our homes to fluorescent lighting to microwave ovens, hair dryers, clock radios, electric blankets and more.

Electrosmog EMFs are not designed with the body in mind. They can be a strong inducer of stress in the body and, therefore, drain our energy. Electrosmog includes “dirty” electricity, ground currents, microwaves and radio waves. Microwaves are not only from leaky microwave ovens, but also from cell towers, cell phones and wireless equipment.

Electrosmog is all around us and can only be partially blocked. One of the best solutions is to take measures to decrease your exposure. With therapeutic PEMFs, one can purposely add beneficial balancing frequencies to the body to decrease the burden of the negative effects of electro smog.

PEMFs and Magnets: What’s the difference?

PEMFs are frequency-based, applied to either the whole body or parts of the body. PEMFs may only be needed for short periods of time, while the effects last for many hours, setting in motion cellular and whole-body changes to restore and maintain balance in metabolism and health. The body does not acclimate, or “get used to,” the healthy energy signals of therapeutic PEMFs, even if used for a long time, compared to magnets.

Stationary (or “static”), non-varying, magnetic fields from magnets have fixed strengths. They are used in mattresses, bracelets, knee wraps and the like. Most have very shallow penetration into the body, resulting in a very limited ability to affect deeper tissues, and they rarely treat all the cells of the body simultaneously. Only skilled practitioners may guide you to get the best results from these approaches.

Experience with PEMFs

There are quite a number of PEMF systems available now in the US, for daily in-home use, that can help meet your unique needs. Some are FDA-approved and many more are available over-the counter or from various experienced practitioners. Some whole-body systems have been available in the US for over a decade and have been used in Europe by tens of thousands of people for a wide variety of problems without significant negative effects for over 20 years. One PEMF system has been studied through NIH-supported research at the University of Virginia for Rheumatoid Arthritis. These whole body systems have been used worldwide, not only by health-conscious individuals for health improvement and maintenance, but also by world-class and Olympic athletes for increased endurance, enhanced performance, and faster recovery.

For Stroke Victims – Recover From Stroke Starting Today

When the blood in the brain is reduced or cut off for some reason, a medical complication can happen – stroke. Strokes can be very devastating for people because they can ruin the rest of your life. There are many problems that people can experience after having a stroke which includes difficulties in breathing, loss in the use of their arms and legs, and having problems with their speech. Many of these people often have to go weeks or even months of physical therapy in order to recover from stroke.

The main reason that these symptoms happen is because when blood flow is stopped in a specific area of the brain, neural connections that are damaged and many neurons in this area die. These connections are those that control all of these functions (walk, speech, vision …). There is a new medicine available that helps the brain to form new neural connections over a period of time. This enables stoke recovery for the sufferers. The main attribute that stroke victims need to understand is that although there are alternative medicines that can help in recovery, a proper rehab program is still cruel.

You should start your rehab program right away as soon as you are discharged from the hospital. Hospitals should have onsite rehab programs and you can choose to go through the exercises there. During the rehab program, family members should accompany the patients to give them moral support. Stroke patients need lots of encouragement, especially from family and friends, in order to have a speedy recovery.

Recovery from a stroke does not take one day or a week. It takes consistent effort from the patient, as well as support from family and friends. Patients should not lose hope because with a consistent rehab program in place, as well as stroke medications, (not true, some patients will never recover / or very poor recovery)

Alopecia Barbae – An Explanation For Balding Facial Hair

Patches of hair loss in the beard is a unique variety of hair loss known as Alopecia Barbae. This condition is portrayed by little circular shaped spots of facial hair loss. It is a type of alopecia so it is in the same class of hair loss as male pattern baldness. Basically, the it is unknown what causes facial hair loss and there is no known way to inhibit Alopecia Barbae. For some men, the bald patches can stay for a lifetime while others experience hair regrowth a few weeks after it fell out.

Although Alopecia Barbae is regarded as harmless, it can diminish a man’s self-esteem and reputation. It is not connected to any other diseases and does not diminish your health in any way. Men who experience Alopecia Barbae once can commonly experience it again at another point in time though this variety of alopecia doesn’t indicate or raise your likelihood for other types of alopecia or loss of hair. There is no way to predict when you may experience another patch of hair loss because, despite popular belief, this form of hair loss is not triggered by stress.

Alopecia Barbae is a reasonably uncommon type of alopecia. Only about two percent of humans suffers from a variety of alopecia areata where hair falls out in occasional areas. Researchers have concluded it is an autoimmune condition where your immune system erroneously assaults healthy human cells because it believes the body is under attack. With alopecia your immune system attacks the hair follicles. The roots of hair follicles become inflamed and the hair can fall out sometimes in just a couple of days. Thankfully, different from the majority of autoimmune conditions, the hair follicles can repair with time and the bald patches can completely fill in.

Dermatologists commonly care for this loss of hair with cortisone injections. The medical doctor will inject many tiny doses of cortisone in the area affected by baldness. Your body naturally creates cortisone with the adrenal glands. It’s basically regarded as a reliable procedure though unintended effects can include skin thickening or sunken areas in the skin at the site of the injection that normally cures itself over time. You could also be prescribed cortisone capsules that you swallow.

The actual harm of Alopecia Barbae is to a man’s self-esteem. Though the issue doesn’t damage the body, society commonly interprets patches of hair loss to indicate significant disease and labels that person as “sickly”. Remedies can help the majority of men regenerate all or part of their facial hair. Some men opt to just shave their facial hair off completely rather than have a spotty beard.

Astro Analysing Eye Problems and Disorders

Eyes are the best gift of our life and play a major role in our life. Our eyes works as the most sophisticated electronic automatic camera. The pupils of the eyes open for the adjustment of focus; accordingly the muscles of eyes contract or expend to allow the entry of proper light inside. Colours are identified and a proper picture develops in our mind. All the process is automatic. Now due to different reasons if the functioning of eyes is disturbed there can be temporary or permanent damage to the eyes.

Treat Your Glaucoma With Marijuana? Ask Your Optometrist For Prescription Drops and Pass On the Pot

Should you ask your eye doctor about marijuana for your glaucoma treatment? Medical Marijuana has been legalized in 14 states but is still not legal under federal law. Many states have been struggling with the massive expansion of medical marijuana dispensaries. Government bodies including cities, state and counties are trying to assure that only adults with legitimate medical issues that can benefit from medical marijuana are able to obtain access.

So is marijuana a valid treatment for glaucoma? Research to date is limited and all glaucoma institutions including the National Eye Institute have recommended not using marijuana in the treatment of glaucoma. There is a lowering of eye pressure but a number of issues create problems with using medical marijuana in treating glaucoma. Marijuana is typically smoked. The effective dosing schedule is about every 3 hours due to a short lived effect. Eye pressures tend to rise at night so repeated dosing every 3 hours night and day would be required. This would disrupt the sleep cycle and result in poor motor skills, inability to drive legally, and low functioning interfering with the ability to work all of the time.

These side effects are unacceptable to most of the population. At this point there is no regulation or oversight of the quality and amount of active compounds in medical marijuana. Unlike prescription pharmaceuticals, the amount required for a proper dose is impossible to accurately state. There are also problems with decreased blood pressure, increased heart rate, and dizziness when standing up after sitting. The decreased blood pressure theoretically could reduce blood flow to the optic nerve and increase the risk of glaucoma damage. There are other possible health risks and benefits that may occur. Oddly, lung cancer does not to be a risk at this time, and marijuana may even offer a protective effect. However, there is some damage to the lung tissues that is thought to occur with long term usage.

Capsules of the single most active substance in marijuana are available by prescription through regular drugstores. These also lower eye pressure but significantly less than inhaled marijuana. The capsules also have a slower onset and need to be consumed every 4-6 hours. The side effects are often described as much more unpleasant than inhalation. The prescription capsules lack the 60+ other similar compounds found in the plants plus several hundred other types of biological compounds. It is unknown if this makes the prescription capsules a better or worse choice. Again, the required frequency of dosing and side effects make this a poor option for the treatment of glaucoma.

Current glaucoma prescription eye drops usually require dosing 1 to 2 times per day, and have a low risk of side effects that rarely interfere with daily functioning. They have a very precise, consistent level of active components. While some problems can occur, these are rare and fairly well known from clinical trials. Marijuana has some active compounds that do lower eye pressure and deserve further support for future investigation. We may even find it is a useful adjunct for treatment in conjunction with standard therapies in the future. However, at this time there is no indication that medical marijuana has any place as a primary treatment for glaucoma, when we have such a large choice of prescription drugs that have undergone vigorous studies. These studies have found them to be safe and effective, with significant research behind them. As a bonus, you do not have to be constantly looking over your shoulder due to the uncertain legal status when you stick to clinically approved glaucoma medications.
