Type 2 Diabetes – How to Lose Belly Fat

If you are like many people, then you probably believe you have belly fat to lose. Even if you are not overweight, there is a good chance you have some extra fat gathered around your abdominal area. And central obesity or “belly fat” is one of the factors present in people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

How much effort you will need to lose your belly fat will depend on how much you have in the first place. Sounds simple enough! The issue, however, is many of us tend to underestimate how much fat we have around our waist. Unless you are experienced at weight loss or knowledgeable about how the body stores fat, it will be normal to think you only have a “few” pounds to shed. In short, you should not trust your estimates. Trust your progress instead because as the fat melts away, you will begin to see what your physique looks like without an extra layer of adipose tissue.

Let us move on to how to lose belly fat. Be careful about believing the mistaken notion belly fat can be rid of with more core workouts at the gym. As useful as abdominal exercises can be, they are not the way to lose belly fat. Why? Because fat loss can only happen through weight loss. If you have lost weight before, then you know you cannot choose which areas of your body lose weight first. How your body distributes fat is dependent on genetic factors and your sex, and only the influence of the latter can be reasonably predicted…

  1. Males store most of their fat around their waist.
  2. Females are more likely to store fat around the entire body, with emphasis on their hips.

No matter how much your body differs or deviates from the norm, it is guaranteed you do not like belly fat. From a health standpoint, it is not beneficial to sustain it, so you should have an even greater incentive to get rid of it.

If abdominal workouts are not the answer, what is the solution? A “proper” weight loss plan is the best way to lose fat. Losing fat should be your number one objective. Losing belly fat follows weight loss. All it takes as well as the correct execution is patience.

If you did not know it already, eating the “right” amount of calories is the essential recipe for weight loss. Whether you are counting calories or not, you must be consuming fewer calories than your body expends. A quality diet and a physically active lifestyle can all but guarantee your body to be in a fat-burning state.

In your case, losing fat around your abdominal area may happen relatively quickly, or it may be the last area where you see progress. If you have fat to lose, it is only going to improve your health and strengthen your well-being if you commit to weight loss. Not to mention obtaining a leaner physique will be a bonus.

Obesity and Cardiovascular Disease

The relationship between obesity and cardiovascular disease is like Siamese twins. Where one is, you will find the other. Statistics show that people who are obese have double the chances of suffering from cardiovascular disease then those who maintain a lower BMI (body mass index).

Obesity is reaching epidemic proportions in North America with one in six people being obese.

If you do not want to be the one in the six and suffer from all the associated health problems then it is time to take some steps to change your lifestyle.

Here are three suggestions to get you on the right track.

1. Make an appointment with your health care provider for a physical

This is one of the most important steps you can take to improve your health. While you are discussing the results of the tests you need to ask them.

– What can I do to improve my health the fastest?

-Is there anything I should not do or something which could potentially be harmful to my longevity?

– What types of physical activity do you suggest I do to improve my health?

2. Change the way you eat.

If you are over weight and want to slim down then you will have to change the way you eat. To think that you can loose weight permanently by continuing to consume the same foods you do now is insane. There are many different systems available to you to provide help and support. Do not feel you are alone, there are one in six people who are not only over weight but obese.

If you want to remain anonymous then there are on-line programs which can help you stay on track and provide support without having to talk to anyone in person.

3. Begin an exercise program.

This is one of the things your health care provider can recommend for you. You should start slow if you have not exercised for some time. A good place to start is a walking program where you can get outside and start to move more. A walking program is great because the greatest improvement in your cardiovascular health due to exercise is from sedentary to moderately active.

Moderately active is doing some kind of physical activity for a total of 30 min. per day.

You do not have to:

– exercise for 30 min straight. Instead you can break it up into two 15 min sections or three 10 min sessions. It does not matter just as long as you are active for thirty min. a day.

– get you heart rate you into the "target Zone". The benefits stem from the activity not the intensity of that activity.

– get dressed up in self image destroying exercise wear (no spandex shorts needed).

The important thing is to start to move more then you already do.

These are three simple things you can do to begin to change your lifestyle for the better. They are not hard to do. Changing your habits for the better now will reap big dividends for you in the future in a healthy body, clearer mind and better self image.

Dogs will react to the presence of allergens in their surroundings in just the way that people do when there is something to react against in their surroundings – pollen, certain cleaning products or certain kinds of foods – they will do anything to take care of the itch . One of the common causes of the canine allergy is the presence of dust mites around the house. It's the rare dog that's able to go through life with no allergies at all. The Law of Diminishing Returns

The law of diminishing returns is a concept borrowed from the field of economics, but equally applicable to personal productivity as well. The law of diminishing returns states that the more unbroken time you put into any optimization attempt, the lower your net return will be.

Having been a competitive gymnast at the international level during my college years, it was not uncommon for me to devote anywhere between five to six hours in the gym a day. My mindset back then was that if I put more hours into the gym training, that my skills would go up proportionately. What happened as a result of this type of training? Exactly the opposite – my performance took a downward plunge. I actually got worst and I also became plagued with injuries as a result of my dedication. I did not understand the law of diminishing returns back then.

Personal productivity for success is no different than sports training. Yes, it takes dedication and it requires a focused mind, but it also requires working smarter – not harder. If you work day and night without breaks then you and your work will suffer from the law of diminishing returns. The quality of work that you produce will start becoming poor quality. Stress levels will go up. Your immune system will weaken, making you vulnerable to illness and disease. Frustration, irritability, and anger will affect both your personal and professional relationships. Concentration will diminish. Your goal will become farther and farther away from you as a result of this behavior and what do most people do in response to this? That's right, they decide to work harder and for longer, believing that more time invested into the project will cure their problems. This self-depreciating behavior often leads to emotional breakdown.

Value is Greater than Quantity

In order to reach new heights in personal productivity, we have to steer ourselves away from this traditional model of "more is better." I can remember having this line of "BS" fed to me during grade school. Often I had to put three hours of homework time a day before I could do anything fun for the rest of the day. It usually took me no more than 45 minutes to complete my homework, but what did I have to do after? That's right, I just sat there doodling in my notebook bored off my ass and waiting for those three hours to run down. I started to hate studying, not because I despised studying, but because I hated being bored. I was being conditioned to live the life of a typical corporate employee, not a successful person. Really if you analyze the habits of employees, you will find that the work that they do can be done in a minimal amount of time and the rest of the time, they are just waiting for the clock to "run out." They have no incentive to get the work done quickly, so they let it linger on over the course of those eight hours and the law of diminishing returns kicks in and makes that quality quality work of less value than what could have been achieved in less time . Not only that, but the 9-to-5 model of work produces a lot of job dissatisfaction because the law of diminishing returns also applies to the level of motivation a person has to get a task completed.

Whether it be our personal lives or our professional lives, productivity will always be an equation of value produced over time spent (P = v / t). Just based on this simple equation, we can see that it benefits us to increase the value quotient (v) and decrease the time quotient (t) in order to maximize the productivity result (P). This should always be our priority when setting out to do a task – create the highest amount of value possible, in the shortest amount of time. Therefore, it is pointless to continue wasting time on a task if the value being produced is very little. It is better to do something else and come back to that task when you are able to maximize the value you distill out of that time.

Is the Lasting Baby Belly a Result of Sugar & Salt Cravings?

Do you have a sweet tooth? Mums frequently do after having a baby and often feel the need to have sugar at lunch or mid afternoon as a pick-me-up. Many Mums feel good immediately they have eaten sugar, but then dazed and a little shaky a short time afterwards.

Galanin is involved in the regulation of food intake and levels of Galanin rise when estrogen levels are high. This could explain why you crave high fat and high sugar foods at different times during the menstrual cycle. A good strategy is to eat smaller and more regular meals. These help keep blood sugar levels stable and keep the sweet cravings at bay.

Eating a diet of complex carbohydrates and protein could also be of benefit. The carbohydrates keep serotonin levels normal. Serotonin is a key chemical in the brain that regulates your sleep, mood, food intake and perceptions of pain. Therefore, eating the right carbohydrates can help to keep sugar cravings away.

Protein on the other hand, helps you stay fuller for longer and so helps prevent snack between meals.

Moderate exercise is also a great way to reduce sugar cravings. When you have a snack that contains sugar, it releases "feel good" endorphins into the brain. Exercise does the same thing, but in a much healthier and more beneficial way.

Whereas sugar cravings may well be physiological, salt cravings are more likely to be learned response or habit.

Do you put salt on your food before you even taste it? Mums who like salty foods, often feel the need to eat fries, crisps and nuts. But after eating foods that contain a lot of salt, you are often left feeling bloated. Too much salt can even leave you with puffy eyes and swollen hands and fingers to the extent that your rings may even feel tight.

The more salt you eat, the more you tend to want. You do need sodium to survive, but require less than 500 mg per day. Too much sodium can lead to health problems such as high blood pressure, fluid retention and other medical conditions including heart failure and kidney disease.

If you've realized that you use a lot of salt, the best thing to do is to cut back gradually rather than cut it out immediately. This way, desires are not likely to be triggered. Make sure that you read the labels on food products when shopping. You will be amazed at how much hidden salt there is in the foods that you buy regularly.

Here are some healthy substitutes for sugary and salty foods to help you get the balance right:

Healthy substitutes for sugary snacks: –

– Bananas
– A handful of sugar snap peas
– Oat cakes or wholemeal bread with honey
– Pineapple
– Raisins
– Low-fat fruit yogurt
– Strawberries
– A handful of grapes

Healthy substitutes for salty snacks: –

– Six to eight walnuts
– A small hand of pumpkin or sunflower seeds
– One slice of wholemeal toast with peanut butter
– Two oatcakes with a thin slice of Edam cheese on top
– A small amount of cottage cheese with tomato and celery
– Two large stalks of celery, with peanut butter thinly spread
– Chopped peppers with cottage cheese and chives
– A mug of low-salt soup
– A slice of wholemeal toast with a small portion of reduced salt baked beans

Do not let cravings for sugar or salt cause you to hold on to the baby belly. You can lose the weight healthily and naturally without crash dieting, counting calories or feeling hungry. There are no secrets, just stuff you do not yet know! See below to find and act on the stuff you do not yet know.

Astragalus: A Natural Booster Of Body's Immune System And Its Antioxidant Capability.

Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) is a large genus of over 2500 perennial flowering species of herbs and small shrubs, belonging to the subfamily Faboideae of the legume family Fabaceae (the pea family). The genus, commonly known as milk-vetch root, is primarily native to the Northern Hemisphere and South America, although many species are also found in southwest Asia, southern Europe, northern Africa, and the Mediterranean and Himalayan regions.

The medicinal use of Astragalus is derived from the treated roots of the plant and has a balancing effect on bodily functions.

Astragalus has been used by practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years to improve digestion, support the spleen, promote the discharge of urine, lower blood pressure, increase endurance and strengthen the body's overall vitality. In China, Astragalus is given to cancer patients to boost immunity after drug or radiation treatment. Additionally, in the US, Astragalus supplements that contain medicinally active compounds including polysaccharide (from Astragalus) have been shown at institutions for cancer research to speed recovery of cancer patients by stimulating their immune system. Astragalus may be given to children as well to support their immune system, especially for the prevention and treatment of the common cold and chronic hepatitis. Clinically, it is used primarily for general digestive disorders such as diarrhea, gas, and bloating, as well as chronic phlegm production.

Astragalus is a good source of the essential trace mineral selenium which advances cell damage caused by hydrogen peroxide and lipids and its antioxidation effect is a few hundred times better than Vitamin E. Recent research in China indicates that Astragalus may offer antioxidant benefits in people with severe forms of heart disease and improve their heart function.

Astragalus is often formulated with ginseng and other Chinese herbs and is available as herbal tea, drops, tinctures, extracts, fresh leaves and flowers or dried roots, root powder and in capsules.

The Benefits of Alternative Medicine and Radiotherapy

Alternate medicine and radiotherapy are a combination that is growing in popularity. Radiotherapy treatment is normally used in cancer patients, with the most common type known as external beam therapy. This name evolved because the treatment consists of a beam of radiation that comes from a very sophisticated machine. The beam is focused on the part of the body that contains the tumor, and the largest amount of radiation possible is used to kill the cancer cells.

Radiotherapy is very hard on the body. The treatments are short in duration, no more than 10 to 15 minutes. There is no pain involved with these treatments, but the side effects afterwards can be brutal, depending on the individual. Extreme tiredness and nausea, pain, hair loss, and red and tender skin are a few of the most common. The use of alternate medicine and radiotherapy together is indicated when the patient wants natural relief from the ravages of radiation side effects.

Nausea is one of the most severe side effects of radiotherapy treatments. Most of the people who must go through the treatments would do anything to get some relief from the seemingly never-ending sickness. Alternative medicine and radiotherapy research has been done on a test group of cancer patients to determine whether or not acupuncture was effective in diminishing the persistent nausea and vomiting. Patients reported that they could tell a dramatic difference in the frequency and amount of nausea they had. Written records were kept by each patient of the times they were sick, and at the end of the research, these records were collated. The final analysis in this study was that acupuncture is useful in preventing nausea in radiotherapy patients.

Acupuncture has also been tested on groups of alternative medicine and radiotherapy believers to see if it could possibly be of help in the relief of pain, another unwelcome side effect of radiation treatments. Nearly all patients undergoing radiotherapy reported various degrees of pain that was definitely related to their treatments. Acupuncture once again proved to be effective in helping cancer patients undergoing treatments for their condition.

The Chinese medicine called acupressure works well with alternative medicine and radiotherapy in helping cancer patients control nausea. This natural technique involves massaging certain areas on the body, normally just under or on top of the skin. These areas are called acupoints, and they are supposedly interconnected with each other as well as to various organs and systems of the body. Devotees to this 5000 year old healing method say that a careful massage in a certain area can stimulate a person’s essential life force, which flows from area to area rather like the circulation of blood. A look at an acupressure chart reveals that the areas that control nausea and vomiting are directly above the kneecap, on the wrist, and about 2 inches above the wrist. People who have tried acupressure are both surprised and delighted with how quickly it relieves their symptoms.

Staying in Control

There's a number of very simple ways to keep things under control, things you can fit into your every day routine in order to stay healthy, feel better, and see the immediate effects and differences. Below are four examples of easy ways to keep healthy, though there's many more!

Exercise More – Understandably, keeping active will help to keep down your blood pressure. Exercise for at least three times a week – something simple like a half hour walk is enough, yet a lack of exercise is the main reason for high blood pressure through the world.

A Healthy Weight – The second, but potentially most obvious one, is to keep your weight down to a healthy level. Excess weight means your body having to work harder through the day – eat well and exercise to keep a healthy weight and lessen the strain.

Lower Salt Intake – If you enjoy a lot of salt on your food, sometimes think about reducing the amount you have with your meals – a healthy amount of salt in your diet is fine, but too much is proven to cause high blood pressure.

Lower Alcohol Intake – More than anything else, alcohol especially is very tough on your blood pressure levels, even if you only drink in moderation. By eliminating or significantly reducing the levels of alcohol you consume, you'll see immediate benefits.

Women at Risk For High Cholesterol

Even a woman who routinely aces her medical tests may earn less-than-perfect scores at cutting-edge preventive health centers. At some health centers the goal is to get women to lower risk factors beyond standard recommendations. Here are some answers to your questions on the numbers that translate into maximum protection.

What cholesterol levels do you look for? New national guidelines say that LDL (bad) cholesterol levels less than 100 are optimal, and that patients with a previous heart attack or diabetes should level for levels below 70. We say that less than 75 is optimal for healthy people. For HDL (good) cholesterol, guide lines are that over 50 is normal for women; we want levels of 65 or higher.

What about blood pressure? You should pretty much go with the guidelines: under 120/80. But doctors tell patients that even lower is better. If your pressure rises in the doctor's office, keep in mind that it's probably also going up when you're stressed at work or stuck in traffic-that can be a risk.

How can women achieve these superlow numbers? If you have only a borderline risk, you should talk about diet, exercise, and stress reduction. Often, just by making lifestyle changes, women can get a 20 percent improvement in their cholesterol levels.

Does that always work? No. Even women who eat well and are fit may have problems with cholesterol. In that case, it's probably genetic. That's when medication can really add to what you do on your own.

What's the takeaway message for women? Stay on top of your tests. Ask to get a copy of lab results, not just a call saying everything's OK. Since labs vary, it's best to track changes in your cholesterol by the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL (divide the total by the HDL number). What do you look for? The American Heart Association says you should aim for a ratio below 5: 1; we believe the optimal is 3.5: 1. And if your ratio, weight, or blood pressure start to creep up, take action. It's much harder to reverse things once you have heart disease or diabetes.

Star Gardening: A Guide to Gardening by Starlight

Gardening by the signs of the zodiac

The first farmers were probably the first practical astrologers. Their crops seemed to respond to the signs in the heavens and this became a convenient method of ensuring good harvests and provided a functional approach to husbandry.

Modern agriculture echoes many of these ancient principles.

Certain seasons brought changing conditions which seemed to either help or hinder the growth of crops. Each season presented different alignments in the constellations and these patterns would evolve into horticultural astrology as it is often practiced today. The following is a brief outline of the zodiacal roots of gardening by the stars and signs of the zodiac.

Pruning

It was believed that in order to insure against infestations when pruning vine crops, trees and woody growths the following formula applied. The Moon must be full in the constellations of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, or Sagittarius. When pruning is done during this period the plants will not suffer from parasites nor disease.

Grafting

Ancient gardeners were believers in never grafting plants or trees when the moon was waning or not visible. Decreasing moonlight or the total absence of moonlight was considered crucial in the successful propagation and grafting of all types of vegetation.

Harvesting

Crops and other plants that were to be preserved for future use were always cut while the light of the moon was decreasing. This was believed to aid in the length of time that produce could be stored without spoiling. This was especially true of timber which was to be used in construction. If wood is cut at the end of the winter and during the decline in moonlight it will be hard and durable.

Plant Regeneration

When cutting or gleaning crops and plants that produce more than one yield the moon should be waxing and in its first quarter. Also, the moon must be high in the sky at this time and in conjunction with the planets Venus or Jupiter. When this equation is followed yields will increase and new growth will be rapid.

Sowing

Sow or plant your garden when the moon is in Taurus, Virgo or Scorpio and is near Saturn. This is the time of maximum benefit for seeds and transplants which, if planted now, will grow with strength and vitality. Also, when the moon is in Libra or Capricorn it is a good time to weed your garden and trim trees and shrubs.

When to Avoid Planting

Never plant any type of vegetation when Saturn is in one of the fixed signs of the zodiac. This will cause poor crops and limited harvests. In ancient times this stellar alignment was associated with famine and death.

The Stellar Gardener

Planting and husbandry by astrological signs should be examined by any gardener as an insightful way to round out ones knowledge of horticulture. The ancients studied the natural order of things. It worked for them and it will still work for us if we care to heed these echoes from the past.

Facts About Squamous Cell Lung Cancer

Carcinomas of the lungs are divided into non small-cell (NSCLC) and small-cell (SCLC) types. A form of NSCLC, squamous lung cancer begins in the squamous cells found in the tissue lining of the airways. The location of the malignancy presents particular obstacles to treatment.

Signs and Symptoms

Squamous cell is closely associated with cigarette smoking, as are most types of lung carcinomas. It is also known as epidermoid carcinoma. Malignant cells tend to grow in the main bronchi where the trachea and lungs meet. As with other types of NSCLC, squamous cell grows slowly. Symptoms of coughing up blood or developing hoarseness in the voice are related to this form of cancer.

Cancers close to the airways can cause additional symptoms such as ‘pancoast syndrome’. This problem is signified by pain radiating down the arm from the shoulder, prickly sensations in the fingers and hands, or ‘Horner’s Syndrome’ which causes a droopy eyelid. Hypercalcemia is another possible side effect of squamous cell carcinoma. This symptom elevates calcium levels causing weakness and cramping muscles.

Diagnostic Methods

During a routine physical examination, chest x-rays which show abnormalities will be investigated for cancer. A sputum cytology performed on a sample from the airways is effective for detecting cancer cells. Additional methods to confirm suspected cancer include chest x-rays using 3D imaging such as CT scans or PET scans. A biopsy sample will generally be taken to learn more about the malignant cells.

Diagnostic tests will determine the measurement of tumors, if the cells have metastasized and if the lymphatic system is now involved. A stage from 1a to 4 will be assigned based on evaluation of these factors. Treatment is then scheduled to cure the patient.

Treatments Options

A person with an early stage squamous-cell tumor has a good chance it can be removed with surgery. This chance is reduced if the tumor has grown to larger than 3 centimeters or is invading local organs or blood vessels. Doctors may use surgical resection combined with chemotherapy to cure the patient. Radiation doses may also be used to alleviate symptoms of the disease, especially in patients with advanced stage lung cancer.
