The Importance of Ambulance Services in Society

Certain situations in life require immediate medical care and a fraction of a second delay can drastically change somebody’s life. The ambulance service and paramedics are very important in society as they save hundreds of lives daily by responding to emergency calls. They operate from ambulance stations located in various areas with control centres that respond to emergency calls and dispatch them when needed. Whether the patient is in rural retreats, busy seaside resorts or large urban conurbations, they reach the emergency scene within minutes of the call.

The emergency ambulance service crew includes a technician and a paramedic. Once the paramedics arrive at the emergency scene they evaluate the situation and the condition of the casualty and decide whether to take them to the hospital or just treat them there. One of the important roles of the ambulance crew is to stabilize and treat patients quickly to prevent any mishap before the patient reaches the hospital.

They provide immediate and effective life-saving care in a safe and clinical working environment with maximum mobility. They are well trained in first aid skills to be able to deal with profuse bleeding, crush and fall injuries, cardiac arrests, road accidents, and much more.

During earlier times they were used to transport patients after the doctor or fire department rescue squad applied simple first aid. Mostly the patient would ride alone however, in some cases the doctor rode along in the ambulance. Today, ambulances come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes equipped with a huge range of essential pre-hospital emergency machines including heart defibrillators, intravenous drips, splints, oxygen, drugs and much more. All ambulances have radios installed in them. Many times ambulances also transport non-emergency patients that might be transferring to another hospital or treatment centre.

In some cases patients may be transported in an air ambulance which is basically an aircraft specially designed for providing emergency medical assistance in critical medical situations. An air ambulance is used when the patient has to be transported over a long distance or terrain or if the patient has to be quickly transported to a treatment centre. Air ambulances are equipped with basic equipment like ECG monitors, ventilators, medication and stretchers.

Lower Back Pain Exercises – Heal Yourself at Home

Have you thrown your back out? Here are some lower back pain exercises that will quickly help you heal.

A few months ago, I was pretty busy out in the yard. I had to shovel and spread quite a bit of mulch. Unfortunately for my back, I was not paying that much attention to my posture. I let my lower back get round again and again as I lifted. Day after day this went on, until finally I reached down to pick some weeds and BAM! My back located up.

Here are some lower back pain exercises that I used to get better in just a week or two.

First, I should note that these exercises are specifically designed to address injuries like disc herniation and bulging disks that can happen when you bend forward and / or sit with a rounded lower back, over and over again. This is a really common cause of lower back pain, but there ARE others. So, if the following situations apply to you, skip these exercises as they may do more harm than good.

Skip these exercises if you:

  • Had your back give out while under a heavy load and think that there is probably some major tissue damage.
  • Have a disorder called spondylolisthesis (if you have this you would most likely already know)
  • Injured yourself while bending back (spinal extension injury)

And, as always, these exercises are provided for educational purposes only. Consult your physician before beginning any new rehabilitation routine.

First, Why Do I Have Lower Back Pain?

The brain causes the muscles in the lower back muscles to lock up and spasm to protect the vulnerable spinal and disks. When we bend forward with a rounded lower back, day after day, we put excess stress on the discs. The vertebrae compress along the front of the spine and squeeze the discs towards the back of the spine, much like toothpaste is squeezed from the bottom of a tube towards the opening.

Occasionally the disks will become injured and bulge out, pressing onto surrounding nerves. When your brain senses that this is happening, it triggers a back spasm to lock up and protect the spine, preventing any further damage.

These exercises help alleviate lower back pain by accomplishing two things. First they put the disc back into place. Then these movements activate the spinal's supporting muscles, which let the brain know that everything is functioning as it should. Since these muscles are supporting the spine, there is no need for emergency support and the brain can relax the back spasms.

The Routine

  1. MacKenzie Pressups – 10 repetitions
  2. Hip extensions – 8 repetitions x 5 sec hold
  3. Birddogs – 4 repetitions x 10 sec hold
  4. Side bridges – 5 repetitions x 10 sec hold on each side

Afterwards, walk around and let your body feel how your spinal support muscles and structures are now properly aligned and activated. There will be less need for the brain to trigger the back spasms that cause you pain and stiffness.

MacKenzie Pressups

This exercise squeezes your discs from the back of the spine to the front, alleviating disks that are bulging towards the rear.

Lying down on your stomach with your hands benefit your shoulders, keeping your shoulder blades down and back, slowly arch your back, pushing your chest up while you breathe out. Keep your hips on the floor.

Lower yourself down slowly on your inhale.

Begin gently and only slowly increase your range of motion. This exercise may hurt a little on the first few repetitions. If it does not feel better after 3 or 4 reps, abandon this exercise.

Hip Extension

This exercise lets your brain know that your glutes are working to stabilize your spine.

Lie on the ground with your feet flat on the ground around shoulder width apart, your knees bent at about 90 degrees.

Raise your hips up towards the sky by pushing through your heels and flexing your glutes (butt muscles). Allow all other muscles to remain relaxed.

Keep your hips up with your glutes flexed for 5 seconds, then lower back down steadily. Do 8 reps.

Bird Dogs

This exercise activates the important spinal stabilizers called the multifidus and transverse abdominus, which help with fine stabilization between individual vertebrae.

Down on all fours, keep your hands and knees aligned with each other, as if they were sharing a plank.

Maintaining neutral spine position (flat back, essentially), slowly lift up one leg, straightening it as your heel moves away from your body. Next, keeping your shoulders packed down, raise the opponent arm out at a 45 degree angle (half of 90!). This will activate the often-dormant lower trapezius. Keep your hips stable while you do this exercise, do not let them shift as you raise your limbs.

Side Bridge / Side Plank

Lying on your side with your feet stacked on top of each other or with one foot placed in front of the other, place your elbow beneath your shoulder. Keep your other hand on your hip or leg.

Flexing your obliques and quadratus lomborum (side abdominal muscles), raise your hips up.

Do not bend at the waist. In fact, it is a good idea to do this exercise against a wall for the first few times, to allow you to get a feel for proper alignment. You want to be pretty straight, from your head to your feet.

Hold for 10 seconds, then repeat 5 times on right and left sides.

Walk Around

After you complete this circuit, stand up and stroll around, maintaining excellent posture. With any luck, your body should sense that everything is functioning as it should, and that back spasms are not needed any longer.

How Often Should I Do This Routine?

Do these lower back pain exercises 2 to 3 times / day when you have just thrown your back out. After you heal, continue to perform this circuit for injury prevention.

Penis Health Watch – What All Guys Should Know About L-Arginine and Benefits for the Male Organ

Body builders and gym rats have been using supplements containing L-Arginine for decades, due to its properties which contribute to muscle growth, increased stamina, and decreased recovery time during exercise. However, its effects on penis health are also considerable, although not as well known. L-Arginine is one of a number of penis-specific nutrients which has shown positive effects on the overall health of the penis and may help to promote healing, increase blood flow and penis sensitivity, and assist the body with fighting off infections and other invaders.

What is L-Arginine?

L-Arginine is an amino acid, a nutritional component that is often referred to as a “building block” of proteins. Amino acids such as L-Arginine perform numerous functions in the body, including the creation of energy to be used as fuel as well as the formation of muscle and other body tissues. L-Arginine is often sold as a dietary supplement and may be found in protein-rich foods such as meats, nuts, and dairy products, as well as certain vegetables. Infections, illnesses, and trauma, especially from severe injuries or burns, may deplete the body’s supply of L-Arginine.

Health Implications of L-Arginine

A large number of health implications are associated with L-Arginine. Due to its ability to relax the blood vessels and increase blood flow, it has been used in the treatment of angina and high blood pressure. In many circles, it is also believed to have a positive effect on conditions ranging from erectile dysfunction to diabetes to migraine, and there is evidence that it helps the body to recover more quickly after an injury or surgery.

Penis Health Benefits of L-Arginine

L-Arginine creme provides numerous important benefits that can have a direct effect on penis health:

• Increases Blood Flow – Studies have shown that L-Arginine is active in the formation of nitric oxide (a natural compound that relaxes the blood vessels), which causes the blood vessels to dilate and improves blood flow to all parts of the body. Aside from the obvious effects of increasing blood flow to the penis, improved circulation allows oxygen, as well as many important nutrients to be distributed to the cells. The increased oxygenation which results from improved blood flow is important in maintaining healthy, youthful-looking skin, as well as healthy nervous system function.

• Promotes Active Healing – Increased oxygenation of the penis promotes more rapid healing, allowing the skin of the penis to repair itself rapidly after minor damage to the skin cells (including the irritation which can occur as a result of frequent masturbation or assertive sexual activity). By increasing the rate of healing, L-Arginine is useful for maintaining healthy, youthful skin, as well as for repairing damaged nerve endings, a major factor in the enjoyment of sexual activity.

• May Boost the Immune System – Researchers believe that amino acids such as L-Arginine play an important role in immune system function. Treating the penis skin with a formula containing this essential nutrient may help to fight off bacterial and fungal infections and to repair damage to the skin cells caused by UV exposure and other environmental intruders.

How to make the most of the penis health benefits of L-Arginine

Many oral supplements, especially those used by bodybuilders contain L-Arginine. However, when taken by mouth, this amino acid may have a variety of unpleasant side effects, including diarrhea, upset stomach, headache, and airway inflammation. Using a creme penis health formula (most health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil) containing L-Arginine and other penis nutrients that is applied directly to the penile skin allows for direct absorption, allowing men to experience the full benefits of these vital nutrients without uncomfortable or potentially harmful reactions.

Optimal Frequency For Acupuncture Treatment

How often does one schedule acupuncture appointments? This is a question that comes up very often in my clinic. In fact, the answer is critical to an acupuncture patient’s ability to maximize benefit from any given course of treatment. Bob Flaws in Acupuncture Today writes, “Acupuncturists often say, ‘Acupuncture works!’ I would add, ‘Yes, especially if you do it often enough.'” (“Acupuncture and the 50-Minute Hour,” Acupuncture Today, October, 2007, Vol. 08, Issue 10)

Every week, I teach a 1 hour class for new patients entering our acupuncture program at the HMO I work for. I use a PowerPoint Presentation to share quite a bit of information. I spend a good amount of time during the lecture on this very point: frequency of treatment matters to the outcome. Often Western patients of acupuncture mistakenly believe they can get treatment in a haphazard fashion or infrequently and still reap a great benefit from the therapy. The schedule that is convenient is not always the one that is medically efficacious.

I strongly urge acupuncture patients to get their treatments done as frequently as possible at first, with the possibility of slowing down after a while. What is frequent enough? The standard of care in Chinese hospitals for the treatment of chronic pain conditions (the bulk of what I treat at Kaiser) is daily acupuncture for a course of 10 treatments. On the outside, it’s delivered every other day and in acute cases, up to 3x per day.

The first core idea around doing frequent acupuncture treatments is that the effect of acupuncture can accumulate if it is done frequently enough. We want to engage this accumulative effect in order to render long-lasting results in our acupuncture patients. Many times I have had patients return to my clinic and report that they received 1-2 years of great relief from their chronic pain condition after just 6 acupuncture sessions!

The second core idea is that in order to engage the accumulative effect one must prevent backsliding into pain (or other symptoms). A typical pain-relief result after just one acupuncture treatment is 1-3 days. Who is typical? Nobody! Everyone is a unique individual. Therefore I ask my patients to pay attention to their result so we can figure out their optimal frequency of treatment.

I’ll give an example. “Betty” comes in for a treatment of her chronic lumbar pain due to spinal stenosis. She gets 3 days of relief following her first acupuncture treatment. This means that her optimal frequency of treatment is 2 sessions per week with 3 days in-between treatments. If she adheres to “the standard” weekly treatment schedule, she will get relief for 3 days but for 4 days her pain (or other symptoms) will have a chance to get back up to their original level – or get worse. Then, we must start over again at square one.

Allowing one’s pain to backslide during a course of acupuncture treatment does not allow a patient the opportunity to build up momentum for healing and the optimal result from treatment. It is my belief that failure to achieve results with acupuncture has less to do with the practitioner’s protocols or time spent with each patient and more to do with failure to achieve a proper treatment frequency.

I had an opportunity to study with Dr. Richard Tan while attending the Five Branches University DAOM program. His opinion on this matter is that treatment frequencies are spaced differently depending on how long the patient is undergoing treatment. The first few weeks or the first month of the course may be every-other-day to 2x/week. Then, for weekly treatments for 4 weeks. Then every-other week for 8 weeks, or something along these lines. This makes sense to me because theoretically, we are achieving results for the patient and their interval of relief is getting longer as they move through the course of treatment.

In my clinic I do not have an opportunity to treat patients in an ongoing fashion. I am given a referral or two of 6 sessions of acupuncture for any given patient with any given chronic pain problem. So for my clinical setting it is critical that patients do frequent treatment in order to render rapid and long-lasting relief from my acupuncture treatments.

What is Alopecia Areata

Hair loss is something that is really annoying, it could affect your appearance, and people could think that you're not in good health. This loss is the cause of great concern to those who are affected, since the hair is the most important part of our "body image", this condition could cause psychologically traumatic. Fortunately, this disease does not have physical affect that can stop you from doing your daily activities. Now, what is hair loss has to do with alopecia areata ? Let's learn from the basic.

What is Alopecia Areata?

If you know hair loss problems that few people suffer, than alopecia areata is one of hair loss types. Alopecia areata (AA) is a common form of hair loss, unpredictable and not painful disease. Usually people who suffer this disease are losing their hair in small, round patches from areas of the body, usually the scalp. Some people even lose all their scalp hair or known as alopecia totalis . Almost 2% of population in the US has alopecia areata , affects both female and male and in variety of ages. Most case is found in children or young people, the immune system, for unknown reason attacks the hair root and causes hair loss.

As start, in most cases, hair starting to fall in small amount but only in round patches, usually the size of quarter. It will continue to few patches or people call it spot baldness. In rare case, this condition can spread to entire scalp, 1 percent of the people can lose all of their body hair, including hair in hands, feet, even eyebrows, this is the type of alopecia universalis . Till these days, there is no cure for this disease; all we can do is trying to find available treatments to help the hair re-grow.

Who can get Alopecia Areata?

Does not matter what your gender is, female or male, type of ethnic, this disease could get you unpredictable, but if there is someone in the family who happens has this disease, it could increase the risk of having this disease also. The most common people who suffer are children and teenagers, but persons of all ages are also able to be affected.

How Alopecia Areata affect my life?

This is a common question, particularly for children, teens, and young adults who are beginning to form lifelong goals and who may live with the effects of alopecia areata for many years. The comforting news is that alopecia areata is not a painful disease and does not make people feel sick physically. It is not contagious, and people who have the disease are generally healthy otherwise. It does not reduce life expectancy and it should not interfere with the ability to achieve such life goals as going to school, working, marrying, raising a family, playing sports, and exercising.

The emotional aspects of living with hair loss, however, can be challenging. Many people accept by learning as much as they can about the disease; speaking with others who are facing the same problem; and, if necessary, seeking counseling to help build a positive self-image.

Health & Afflictions Determination Using Zi Wei Dou Shu (ZWDS)

In my previous article, I touched upon determination of health problems and afflictions using the Chinese Astrology method Bazi (also known as 4 Pillars). To do a more holistic assessment, we can also complement it by employing another Chinese Astrology method called Zi Wei Dou Shu (ZWDS).

We can start off by assessing the stars in the Health Palace. But it is not a necessity because one’s decade luck moves every 10 years and the decade Health Palace could be any one of the palace in the Zi Wei Dou Shu chart. In addition, sometimes it is triggered by stars clashing the Health Palace instead. To understand how stars can clash Health Palace and how decade Health Palace moves, readers may visit my blog or forum to read and ask.

Let’s start with the most feared killer, Cancer. Cancer is usually triggered by the Lian Zhen star or Tian Tong star in ZWDS but they must be accompanied Hua Ji star. When either of these stars are triggered simultaneously with Wu Qu, we can refine it further as nose cancer or breast cancer.

As for cardiac arrest or heart related ailments, it is usually triggered by the Tai Yang (also known as Sun) star while hypertension and stroke usually revolve around Tian Ji star. Liver and gall related ailments would usually see the activation of Tian Ji and Tan Lang star. Gastrointestinal problems are usually the result of Ju Men, Tian Liang or Zi Wei star. Injuries would usually be a result of the Goat’s Blade and Tian Xing star.

Well, what about modern day sexual diseases including HIV and Aids? They are usually the result of simultaneously triggering Tan Lang and Lian Zhen simultaneously. Hence, any reader with both stars housed together should take care not to engage in casual sex. Your one night of romp could be lethal!

Sex As a Natural Treatment For Gout

I wanted to laugh when I first came across this rather ridiculous suggestion on some of the online sources about natural treatments for gout. After the initial state of skepticism, I decided to do some study about this interesting topic about having sex as a natural treatment for gout.

Well, it must somehow works on some of the gout patients until this method is widely spread as one of the treatment option for gout. Some people think it works, but they just cannot explain how it works on reducing the inflammation and pain of the notorious gout attacks. Before I explain how to have good sex as one of the method of treating your gout, you must first understand the chemistry of sex.

We all know about the temptation and good feelings that good sex gives us. That is part of our natural instinct, and having a healthy sex life plays an important role in maintaining the well being of our body and mind.

Scientists call sex as a melting pot of the soup of bio-chemicals, the hormones. This scientific statement may somehow kills away some of the romantic side of sex, but whatever you feel as the result of sex can actually be explained by simple science. It is not a matter of what happens between your legs, it is about the chemical reactions happen between your ears.

There are a few vital hormones that contribute the pleasures (and pain relief) we feel during sexual intercourse. It starts with dopamine, which is one of the brain’s pleasure chemicals. Dopamine is released in the ‘reward centre’ of the brain when we see something that arouses our desire, such as good food and attractive partner. Dopamine increases the pulse rate and cardiac functions which result in the ‘blushing’ effect in some people.

During sexual orgasm, your brain will push the amount of dopamine to the max and then bring it down right after the climax with the release of prolactin which prevents you from over indulge in the rush of dopamine. Prolactin rises sharply immediately after orgasm and it is what gives you the “full” feeling after your intimate moment. Prolactin disengages you from sex after orgasm and makes room for your mind to think of other things besides the naked person lying next to you.

Beside the roller coaster ride of dopamine, there are two other sex related neurotransmitters that contribute to the whole sensation of sex. Oxytocin, which is also known as the “cuddling hormone” is a hormone secreted by the pituitary gland when you feel the affection to someone you love dearly. Oxytocin helps in creating a strong bond between you and your lover.

Oxytocin stimulates the production of endorphin which is the ‘happy neuro chemical’ that produces the feelings of ecstasy and pleasure. Endorphins fill you with a sense of well-being and relaxation, and sometimes might even drift you off to sleep. Endorphin has a similar chemical structure of morphine and that explains why it has the pain relief effects.

The quality of you sex life determine the levels of the above mentions hormones in your body. If you want to have sex as a treatment for gout, you must know how to ‘control’ the release of those hormones.

The best guideline is to increase the amount of oxytocin and endorphin as much as you can while minimize the fluctuation of dopamine and prolactin. Since oxytocin and endorphin are more emotionally related, so it is good to practice longer lasting sensual experiences with your lover instead of a lustful release of desire.

Make love, not sex. Those pain and stress relief hormones are hidden in your brain not your sex organ. Cultivate the right feelings and emotions with your love ones by having romantic foreplay and delay the ejaculation for as long as you can while making sure both of you enjoy the pleasure of sex.

ADD-ADHD Treatment – First Base With the Therapeutic Window – There is No Bottom

Key Points to Recognizing the Underdose, it Just Isn’t working

Remember from previous articles here the importance of dialing in ADD/ADHD stimulant medications precisely. You can’t have them precisely adjusted if you don’t have clear targets, clear symptoms that your are addressing. The current diagnostic coding [DSM-IV] makes symptom recognition confusing and limits treatment objectives to only descriptive diagnosis, superficial assessment, not functional. See my other articles and my website below for more discussion and podcasts on precise functional diagnosis and better targets. Without clear targets the team has no clear treatment objectives to see if the meds are working.

First Consider the Therapeutic Window

The *Therapeutic Window* is simply what it says; the window, is the space, the place in time and symptom correction that the ADD/ADHD stimulant medication clinically works best, – the dosage, the effectiveness of that specific product with that specific person. All products have characteristic features, they metabolize, they burn, at different rates of speed in different people. The way we evaluate that window is by recognizing the top, the bottom and the sides. We work to make sure all the bases are covered correctly and the medication is working at it’s maximum level of expected performance.

  • Underdose the Start: I always recommend carefully, slowly starting the ADD/ADHD medication at the outset – lower than the expected endpoint. Most of the new drugs have different rates of metabolism, and it is quite easy to overdose the patient. This happened with Adderall in the beginning, it happened with Adderall XR, and it happens with Concerta and Vyvanse even today. So start much lower than expected, and move slowly up – about every 2 weeks when close to precision.
  • Low Start Requires Bottom Awareness: The axiom for stimulant meds: start low, and go slow, watching for the effect to show. When it is working the focus is better, the impulsivity is down, the worries are diminished and the patient can get going with projects – overcoming avoidance and procrastination.
  • AM and PM Are Your First Markers: When it starts to work: all meds should start about 30-45 min after they are taken in the AM
  • Start Always with Breakfast – Then Next, Give the Med: This simple step will prevent overdosing at the outset and is often forgotten before the first med check – so the team should always remind the patient about a good protein breakfast.
  • The AM Bottom of That Therapeutic Window – it just doesn’t work in the morning, or will work for just awhile – 1-2 hr – and be gone, either with Immediate Release Tablets, or with Extended Release Capsules – even with Daytrana.
  • The PM Bottom of That Therapeutic Window – You simply cannot tell when it wears off. This difficulty is often seen with Vyvanse because of the slow metabolically related release mechanism – it’s as effective as other amphetamine based products and as forgiving as MPH [Ritalin] based products.
  • The Therapeutic Window Dosage should last the entire expected Duration of Effectiveness [DOE] for that specific stimulant medication. More details in other articles here.
  • Adjust the AM Dosage upward until the specific targeted AM and PM range of effectiveness [DOE] is achieved for the extended release stimulants.

If you follow these simple guideposts you can quickly get past that initial question: “Is it working at all?”

Marijuana – Easily Accessible To Teens – So Very Dangerous

Marijuana is often seen as a harmless drug that doesn’t lead to addiction. Marijuana is also most often the “gateway drug”, as users are observed to first experiment with marijuana, before progressing to other powerful drugs, including opioids. Teenagers are most at the risk. One in ten kids use marijuana regularly, according to a recent survey, and more than a quarter of high school students have tried it at some point or the other. Thus marijuana is now the most widely used illegal drug in the United States, and the users of which are increasing at an alarming rate.

But what is the reason for such wide usage of this particular drug, and why is it that when the consumption of some other drugs have fallen, while the numbers are steadily increasing for marijuana? One of the major reasons for this is the easy availability of this particular drug. Marijuana is one of the easiest drugs to access in almost all cities and towns across the United States. While laying hands on some other drugs and chemicals may require special “contacts” in the gray world, marijuana is very easily available off the street. Moreover, marijuana is cheap to buy, at least cheaper than most other drugs. These two facts combine to make marijuana the most widely available drug, which is also very easily accessible to teens.

In a recent survey, most high school students said that they knew where to get marijuana, even if they were not using the drug. Marijuana is very easily available near many schools across the country. Often, teenagers don’t have to go very far to get marijuana. Peddlers are often to be found nearby, and ready to sell their wares to anyone who is interested. They also frequent parties, and marijuana again stands as the most easily available, as well as most widely used drug at high school parties. Such easy access that teens have to marijuana is really dangerous.

The reason why so many teens are not afraid to try this drug is that it is largely perceived as a safe drug. In fact, it is different from the popular perception of a drug as a white powder that is to be snorted or a liquid to be injected, that marijuana hardly feels like a drug. Many teens surveyed, believed that marijuana is not harmful and not addictive. This because when a teen first looks at marijuana, the bunch of dry leaves hardly looks as glamorous as it is made out to be in pop culture, and many teens fail to understand what the fuss is all about. This leads to taking the first drag (which just looks and feels like smoking a cigarette), which is the beginning down a long, lonely and dangerous road towards drug addiction.

Teens should be properly educated on the ill effects of marijuana, and should be raised in a way to understand the difference between good and bad. With marijuana being so easily accessible, it is important for teens to be able to take correct decisions based on facts, rather than peer pressure.

Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), also known as Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome, is a rare, genetically determined disorder that affects blood vessels throughout the body and results in a tendency for bleeding. Recurrent bleeding from the nose; bleeding spots in the skin, oral and nasal mucosa and conjunctiva; bleeding from the gastrointestinal, respiratory and urinary tracts; and pulmonary and brain aneurysms are common symptoms for this disease.

The Ayurvedic treatment of HHT is aimed at controlling the bleeding and treating the basic pathology of the disease. Medicines like Naagkeshar (Messua ferrea), Vasa (Adhatoda vasaka), Sphatic-Bhasma (Purified alum) and Laxa (Purified wax) are used to stop the bleeding. Medicines like Praval-Bhasma, Praval-Panchamrut, Kamdudha-Ras, Chandrakala-Ras, Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Chandan (Santalum album), Usheer (Vetiveria zizanioidis), Mandukparni (Centella asiatica) and Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra) are used on a long term basis to gradually reduce the tendency for bleeding. Medicines like Punarnavadi-Mandur, Tapyadi-Loh and Lohasav are used to treat iron-deficiency anemia.

Medicines which act on the ‘Rakta’ dhatu (tissue) are useful in this condition. These medicines include Haridra (Curcuma longa), Daruharidra (Berberis aristata), Patol (Tricosanthe dioica), Patha (Cissampelos pareira), Musta (Cyperus rotundus) and Kutaj (Holarrhina antidysentrica). Medicines like Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha, Tapyadi-Loh, Ekang-Veer-Ras, Haridra and Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) are given on a long term basis to prevent recurrences of bleeding episodes. Laxadi-Guggulu, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu and Trayodashang-Guggulu are used to treat and reduce the size of known aneurysms in the lungs and brain in order to prevent possible rupture and hemorrhage.

With adequate treatment, most patients with HHT have a favorable prognosis. However, a small percentage of patients may have serious complications because of involvement of the lungs, liver and the brain. All such patients should therefore be under the regular care and supervision of a Hematologist.

Multivitamin Comparison – From Empty Air to Massively Boosting Health

Multivitamins – who uses them? Well, you probably do, Americans spend $4,000,000,000 a year on multivitamins alone. 70 % Australians are no less keen on them, spending a tiny $2,300,000,000, and yes … that is a ton of zeros!!

Who needs them? Well the number of people that can say that every day they honestly eat a well-balanced diet of containing lots of fruits, nuts and vegetables, whole grains, dairy, along with chicken and fish is not just low, it is merely non-existent. Of the people who think they are doing well, most do not realize the sheer quantities that have to be consumed to maintain that ‘well-balanced diet’.

Okay, so almost everyone needs a multivitamin, but which one to choose? Having 30,000+ vitamins on the market presents so much choice it normally is a case of finding the bottle you think looks the nicest … or the cheapest. After all, a vitamin is a vitamin right?

Fortunately, 7 Canadian and American biochemists have come to rescue us from our ignorance. They looked at and compared what is in each of these multivitamins by separating and measuring each ingredient – that is, vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and other components.

They put together the ‘perfect’ multivitamin, which actually does not exist as some vitamins needs to be taken separately and it would be the size of large chestnut, and rather difficult to swallow!

They examined how absorbable the vitamins were, whether they were in the right amounts/form and the variety of vitamins and minerals. Also looked at was having the vitamins in the right combinations for the body’s needs. The score was how close each one was to that perfect multivitamin out of 100%.

A staggering 50 out of the total 110 multivitamins did not even reach 10% and only the top 11 multivitamins were above 25% of what the human body needs on a daily basis.

The popular supermarket brands all featured below 10% possibly due to being forced to compete on price with other supermarkets. The downside for you, means the product you take every day is a hugely inferior supplement.

In other words, you get what you pay for. In some cases ignorance is bliss, in others it is a big wakeup call. My father has taken supplements for many years before and after he developed cancer and never once questioned the quality of what he was consuming. After reading this, he too, wondered why he ever thought not to research something so important to his health, when he did such a great job of researching anything else that he bought.

My advice, choose a multivitamin that is backed by a great company with a good reputation and do not just buy any old vitamin because of the price. You would be better off spending the money on something else.

10 Reasons to Choose NaProTechnology Over InVitro Fertilization

For couples that are experiencing infertility, the desire to have a child can be overwhelming. Every month that passes is another missed opportunity. Depression, grief, sadness, and despair eventually set in and at some point most couples become desperate enough to gamble with tens of thousands of dollars on expensive procedures like InVitro Fertilization (IVF) without fully understanding what they are getting themselves into. For the vast majority of couples who try IVF, false hopes turn false, and things that sound too good to be true prove to be so.

Before you decide to spend your precious savings on IVF or any of its latest forms such as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) you owe it to yourself to find out more about NaProTechnology (NPT), a medically sound and scientifically supported approach to treating the cause of your infertility. “NaPro” means “natural-procreative” and as the name implies, it refers to the application of diagnostic and medical technologies toward achieving pregnancy “the natural way” through intercourse as opposed to a laboratory procedure.

Here are 10 reasons to choose NPT rather than IVF:

1. NaProTechnology Focuses on Disease

If a couple cannot get pregnant, it makes sense that the first thing the doctor must do is to find out why. This is THE goal of the complete NPT program. With IVF, the cause of infertility is not important and in the underlying problem it is completely ignored.

2. Success Rates are Better with NaProTechnology

Recent data from the Pope Paul VI Institute in Omaha, NE, show that NaProTechnology success rates are 1.5 to 3 times better than IVF (23.5% versus 38.4%-81.8%). In a 4 year study of 95 NPT couples who had been trying to conceive for an average of 6.1 years and had 176 failed attempts at an Artificial Reproductive Technique (ART) Boyle[1] reported that there were 123 conceptions. Life table analysis demonstrated increasing success the longer that couples remained in the NPT program with 26.2% pregnant at 12 to 17 months rising to 32.6% at 18-25 months.

3. Destruction of Embryos

An analysis of ART data[2] from 1983 to 1986 demonstrated that the transfer of 1,372 embryos (3.2 per woman) resulted in 81 live births. From this data, it is necessary to create 16.9 living embryos to produce one live birth. The higher reported rates of success for IVF procedures usually means more embryos are being transferred which increases the risk of multiple births.

4. Infanticide: “Selective Reduction”

One of the most objectionable things about IVF is that it can result in a situation where a woman is forced to deal with a dangerously high multiple pregnancy rate. Pregnancy risk increases dramatically with the number of babies in the womb. Frequently, women are compelled to selectively “reduce” (i.e., kill) additional babies in the womb due to unacceptably high pregnancy risk.

5. Natural Sex versus a Laboratory Procedure

In IVF, the sperm and eggs (gametes) are collected through masturbation (male) and harvesting (female) where they meet in a laboratory to form embryos which are then reintroduced into the woman’s body. NPT, on the other hand, relies on a natural act of intercourse to achieve pregnancy.

6. NaProTechnology is more cost effective

According to Collins[3], the median cost of one cycle of IVF in the United States in 2001 is $9,226. $20-30,000 expenses are not unheard of, however, because IVF clinics prefer to sell discount packages (multiple cycles) in order to increase success rates and allow for “shared” risk. In comparison, at one medical center in Duarte, CA (Santa Teresita), NPT has been cited as costing approximately $9,290 which includes a physician evaluation, hormone and ultrasound evaluation, and outpatient surgical treatment of infertility.

7. Pregnancy Outcomes

There is growing concern that IVF may have significant adverse effects on the children conceived with this procedure. In a study of birth defects after ICSI and IVF procedures, Hansen et al.[4] reported that ICSI and IVF babies were more than twice as likely to have been diagnosed with a major birth defect by the end of one year of life (8.6% and 9.0%) as compared to naturally conceived babies (4.2%).

8. You could get pregnant again!

Because natural fertility is restored with NPT, these couples are often able to get pregnant again. In the Boyle study[1] of 89 births in women who had failed ART, there were 14 women with 2 live births, and 1 woman with 3 live births. Since IVF does nothing to correct the cause of infertility, there is no benefit toward subsequent pregnancies.

9. What will you have to show for it?

Ironically, in some cases IVF procedures cause additional harm to the female reproductive system in the course of treatment. For example, some IVF clinics will perform surgical removal of a blocked and swollen fallopian tube in order to increase success rates[5]. In these cases, when IVF fails, fallopian tube repair is no longer an option. This approach is contrary to the natural and restorative orientation of the NPT physician and surgeon[6]. NPT is designed to restore (not destroy) reproductive function. If nothing else, NPT couples have had the underlying cause of the problem addressed which often results in better overall health.

10. What happens after you get pregnant?

This is perhaps the most important question. Frequently, couples who pursue IVF have not thought about what happens next. Success equals pregnancy. Unfortunately, ignoring the underlying problem that leads to infertility in the first place can adversely affect the pregnancy and even lead to miscarriage. With NPT, restoring health and fertility begins before conception and continues throughout the pregnancy with the aim of preventing miscarriage and promoting the optimum health of the newborn baby and mother.

Sangaray Or Water Chestnuts Are Used As Medicine in Pakistan

Now the monsoon season is over and the flood waters are receding here in Pakistan, there has been a tremendous amount of devastation. In the local bazaar the price of chicken has plummeted, because poultry farmers are desperate to sell their birds because the buildings which housed them have been destroyed in the floods. This is good news for the consumer at the present time, but the flip side is that the price of eggs has gone through the roof.

We now have bright red carrots in the bazaar and my husband came home with water chestnuts when he went to the old Raja Bazaar earlier this week. These are called ‘sangaray‘ here and although Pakistani cuisine doesn’t seem to include them as do cuisines of South-East Asia, they are used in medicine.

If you’ve never eaten fresh water chestnuts you may wonder why they have this name as what do tuberous roots of a water plant have in common with a nut? The answer is – the taste. Some of these sangaray taste like chestnuts that have been roasted on a brazier; others have a more floral taste. Whichever variety I have eaten here though, have tasted very different to the canned ones I used in Europe.

In Pakistan these water chestnuts are often powdered and used to make roti (chapattis) and the water left after boiling them is mixed with a few water chestnuts, liquidized and given to children suffering from measles. They say that sangaray have cooling properties and so are good for heatstroke and fevers. The powdered water chestnuts mixed with milk or water is said to be good for urinary tract infections such as cystitis, and the juice from these edible roots is used to cure indigestion and nausea.

They look a lot like mouth-watering chocolates in their hard shell casing and need to be boiled until the shell is softer. I eat then fresh from their shells which may be why I think they are like roast chestnuts which are found on street corners in Portugal, and Greece at this time of year.

Unfortunately in this part of the Punjab (Islamabad/Rawalpindi) we can’t find these in our local bazaar. The vegetable seller asked my husband how to cook them, so they are not as widely relished here we suspect as they are in the southern Punjab around Lahore. There the water chestnut season is eagerly awaited and it is said that they will cure any fevers that occur after the monsoon. Touch wood I haven’t had one yet, but it is good to know that a delicious cure is at hand.

Tattoo Removal With Salt – Heroic But Cheap!

Do you have a special tattoo that you loathe? Or are there even more tattoos on your body that you want to get rid off but do not know how? Maybe you have tried something else already, and you were not satisfied with the result of the tattoo removal.

One tattoo removal procedure that costs hardly anything but is not for the faint at heart is the tattoo removal with salt, or salabrasion.

What are the costs of tattoo removal with salt?

What men say about it..

In US$

Pouch of sea salt, $2.50

Cloth, $0.50

Hydrogen peroxide, $1.00

Nasty scar

Two six-packs of beer for concocting glamorous story to explain nasty scar to chicks, $10.00

Total cost: $14.00

Facts you should know before you do a tattoo removal with salt

When you got your tattoo, black ink or other colors were injected with a fine needle into the dermis. The dermis is a deep layer of our skin, and the ink stays there because there is another very firm layer holding the ink in place. On top of it there is the outer layer of our skin, called epidermis that renews itself every 28 days. There is no use to place a tattoo on the epidermis as it will be removed by the body renewing the skin cells every month. You need to understand that removing tattoos from the dermis is a challenging endeavor because it involves pain, scarring and psychological stress. Are you prepared to rub your tattooed skin so hard with salt that you are bleeding?

What do you have to go through when you do tattoo removal with salt?

* You have a black ink tattoo on your arm that you want to be gone.

* You hop in the shower with a pouch of sea salt, turn on the water, pour some salt onto a wet cloth, and begin rubbing your tattoo very hard.

*Within a few minutes the tattooed area starts bleeding, and within twenty minutes the epidermis is gone and you have to dug well into the dermis. The pain is excruciating, but only at first – either because the salt begins to act as an anesthetic after a while, or because your endorphins are kicking in.

* Perhaps you are spurred on by the fact that you could actually see the ink becoming patchier the more you rubbed. Eventually you have a deep red valley in your arm that bleeds surprisingly little – apparently salt staunches blood flow. It is terrible-looking, but does not hurt much (you need to decide for yourself how much pain you are able to bear as people have varied pain thresholds).

* You have spent almost two hours toiling and decide it was time to be done, though there is still some ink left.

* You rinse the salt off with cold water, dry yourself, put antibiotic ointment on the wound, bandage it, and go to sleep.

The days after tattoo removal with salt

– A scab soon formed which had a hard time staying attached to your arm because the wound was so deep and there was nothing much for it to cling to.

– A lot of ink was contained in the scab–when it fell off, the ink that was left underneath was hardly visible.

– A second scab formed and fell off, with more ink in it. It’s now been a couple of weeks since the tattoo removal with salt and the wound is well on its way to healing, with hardly any ink visible.

– You may pour hydrogen peroxide on it every day after showering, followed by vitamin E cream. The tiny bit of ink that is left may seem to be very close to the surface, and it may fully disappear by the time you have completely fully healed.

Does tattoo removal with salt work?

Salabrasion does work. It is nasty, ugly, bloody, barbaric, painful, carries the risk of infection, and will certainly leave heavy scars. It seems to get rid of black ink. If you have big unwanted tattoos you need to carefully weigh your options so you don’t make a mistake that you pay for a lifetime, and with your good health. Using salt on big tattoos would leave huge scars. Are you sure that you want that?
