Use of Cholesterol Lowering Statins Being Recommended to Children As Young As 8 Years Old

Indication Creep is the phenomenon wheree a drug is tested and approved for one specific use and doctors prescribe it for another use.

This is a perfectly legal and legitimate practice. Once a drug is approved for use, a doctor is allowed to prescribe it for any usage that they choose to .Prescribing drugs for "Off Label" uses, as it is known, often saves lives and helps many people. It also will often drive studies to be done for usages that doctors have found the drug to be useful for. But prescribing for Off-Label uses also has its downsides- especially when the drug is used in age groups that it was not tested on.

A study that examined off label uses shows that MORE THAN 50% of all drugs prescribed to children in the hospital are used off label!

This is a seriously shocking number. Children's metabolismism are NOT the same as adults. They process drugs entirely different than adults do. And the long term effects of these drugs on children's growth and development is in unknown territory.

The AntiCholesterol drugs known as 'Statins' include names such as Lipitor, Baycol, Pravachol, Mevacor and Zocor. They are being prescribed in HUGE numbers to adults with questionable effects. Side effects are NOT rare and include such effects as muscle weakness and liver failure. Many researchers and doctors believe that their use, even in adults, is only marginally necessary anyway, due to the fact that high cholesterol, in the VAST Majority of Cases, is controllable with diet and lifestyle changes.

But the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that doctors consider using Statin Drugs in children as young as 8 years old if they have high cholesterol! I find their recommendation HORRIFYING for a variety of reasons.

1) Do we even know what a "normal" cholesterol level IS in children?

They have not their been extensive studies of "normal" cholesterol in children so that we know what normal even is. Children are not "small adults" and their normal blood levels are not always the same as adults. How can anyone decide to "lower" a level of anything when they do not know what "normal" really is!

2) Do we know what lower cholesterol in children will do to them long term?

Cholesterol is not in our bodies unnecessarily. It's there because we NEED it for the development of every single cell wall in our entire body, for the conversion of Sunlight to Vitamin D in our skin, and for the creation of every hormone. What will happen when we take away the building blocks of cell walls and hormones in a child is completely unknown.

3) The most well known, but least talked about "Side Effect" of Statin Drugs- are their Coenzyme Q-10 lowering effect.

Coenzyme Q-10 is a crazy sounding name for a substance that fuels the Mitochondria in every cell in the body. The Mitochondria are often called "The Powerhouses" of each and every individual cell of the body. This is not just a "theoretical" effect of statins. Fatigue and muscle weakness are among the most common causes of people being unable to continue to take statins. This muscle weakness is a direct result of Coenzyme Q-10 depletion and is EASILY remedied with the over-the-counter supplements known as Coenzyme Q-10 or Ubiquinone.

While this is WIDELY reported in the literature on statins, the muscle weakness seems to baffle practicing doctors who could easily remedy the situation, but prefer to try the patient on different statin medications until they have exhausted all of their statin options (and exhausted their patients !). So, the question becomes- what are we doing to children when we depleted their cellular energy ?! We already have a nation of tired sick people. Are we making these children destined for a lifetime of obesity, malnutrition and ill health in the name of 'reduced cholesterol'?

4) They are LOTS better ways to lower High Cholesterol and, as usual, it absolves the Physician of the responsibility to find the REASON WHY the child has high cholesterol in the first place.

If these children do truly have High Cholesterol, perhaps it's time for a Family Intervention from a combined social services / nutritionist consult who can teach the family to get the CRAP foods out of their house and go for a walk after dinner instead of sitting on their asses watching television. This would probably "Cure" a lot more cases of "Familial High Cholesterol", Diabetes and Obesity than all of the drugs in the world.

How Does An Internal Cardiac Defibrillator Work?

Implantable cardioverter defibrillator or ICD is a small device similar to a pacemaker, attached to the heart of a person. People suffering with conditions like arrhythmias are under the constant risk of heart failure. Irregular heartbeats caused by arrhythmias will cause sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) which will lead to stroke or death if it is not treated within a few minutes. ICD's are a boon to people suffering from such heart issues.

The Implanted defibrillator fixed under the skin, will monitor the heartbeat of a person constantly and ensure that they are treated immediately if there is any irregularity in the heat beat. The internal defibrillator will be attached to a patient's body via small wires with electrodes. The heart's chambers will be connected to these electrodes enabling them to monitor the electrical impulses as well as the steadiness of the palpitations. ICD will send low-power electrical impulses to the various heart chambers making it work properly again. Implantable cardioverter defibrillator or ICD's replicate the exact electrical impulses generated naturally inside our heart when it expends and contracts regularly.

Internal defibrillator devices are important for people who are recovering from surgeries and severe cardiac arrests. They are at a high risk of experiencing arrhythmias. Patients in such vulnerable conditions die before they reach the hospital because the heart does not receive enough stimulation for more than five or ten minutes. Implantable cardioverter defibrillator devices help them live a long life by treating them within minutes of identifying the symbols.

A small metal box with batteries will be attached under the skin. The box will have computer chips and pulse monitors attached to it. The heart's rhythmic beats and electrical activity is kept under constant surveillance by this implanted defibrillator. The record of this electrical activity occurring in the heart is important for any doctor to determine the condition of the patient.

The Implantable cardioverter defibrillator devices can be programmed to respond according to the heartbeat of the severity of the arrhythmia. Stronger electrical pulses are usually painful but useful in keeping the patient alive until they reach the hospital. Most of the implanted defibrillator devices are capable of adjusting them according to the situation of the patient automatically.

Modern machines are capable of recording ECG, monitoring the respiration, temperature of the body, pulse range and several other technical details necessary for a physician to work on the patient immediately. This small device is capable of giving electrical shocks extending up to 360 joules depending upon the heartbeat of the patient. Such immunity shocks are usually painful and administrated only in rare conditions.

The cost of the implantable cordioverter defibrillator and the pacemakers are more or less the same. But implanted defibrillator devices do more work than the pacemakers. In fact internal defibrillator devices double as pacemakers too in addition to performing various other functions. The device does not cause side effects and is capable of working for several years without causing any complications. ICD's are indeed one of the best inventions of the modern medical science used to save hundreds of lives every year.

Breast Cancer and Environmental Estrogen, The Connection

Estrogen also spelt oestrogen is a normal hormone in the human body and in females controls the reproductive cycle and also prepares the body for pregnancy. Environmental estrogen is not a normal hormone because it comes from outside the body and is found in many everyday products we use. This environmental estrogen can mimic our natural estrogen and scientists know they can cause health problems including breast cancer.

It’s because estrogen that is not found in nature can signal breast cells to divide and the more they divide the more likely they will develop cancer. Breast cells subjected to these chemicals will slowly change from normal body cells to tumour cells. It doesn’t happen over night but will slowly develop over a period of 10 or 20 years.

Estrogen is found everywhere in our modern world we live in and unfortunately it is not particularly easy to avoid it. But some you can avoid, as many of them are commonly found in plastic. Two of these estrogenic chemicals are phthalate and Bisphenol A, sometimes called BPA and are in plastic to add flexibility and durability to the product. So avoid drinking from plastic bottles or storing food in plastic containers. Also some processed food tins now days are lined and this lining contains these chemicals as well.

It is also found in many cosmetics such as nail polish, perfume and underarm deodorant. Deodorants when applied to the underarm or breast area can accumulate in the breast fat and cause breast cancer. Phthalates are also used to make polyvinyl chloride which is abbreviated PVC and is in vinyl flooring and plastic shower curtains. A new car smell is actually phthalates vaporizing from the plastic used in the interior linings.

One of the ways that estrogen enters our body is through microwave cooking so never microwave in plastic containers and especially with the thin plastic film called “Gladwrap” The estrogen within the plastic is easily transferred to the food.

Epidemiological studies have shown that 90 percent of breast cancers are of environmental origin and not caused by genetics. As with most chemicals, we all thought they were harmless but we are now finding they are causing many of our modern day health problems. Also these chemicals tend to stay in the body for a long period of time.

I know plastic is very convenient to use but there is other much safer options, such as glass ware or stainless steel which are free of these chemicals. If you are checking labels, you rarely see the words phthalate or bisphenol A on the label of the product unless it says phthalate or bisphenol free.

Brachial Plexus Palsy

Brachial Plexus is a network of nerves that connects the spinal cord in our neck to the nerves that supply the arm. Often during delivery, many women are unable to push their baby out, in such a case a certain amount of force is applied to bring the baby out and this leads to the damage of the Brachial Plexus nerves in the child. It does not always happen but there is a high possibility of it taking place. When this condition takes place in an infant it is known as "Brachial Plexus Palsy". This usually happens when the baby is very big, in a prolonged delivery, breech presentation; neck of the bay is stretched etc.

It is fairly easy to spot the symptoms of Brachial Plexus in infections. They usually lay with their affected hand still. You will notice that there is not much movement with that arm or hand. If you do notice such symptoms in your child, please have him or her examined by your pediatrician. They will usually have your children go through X-rays.

Brachial plexus continues to continue because as much as doctors may try to prevent in case of emergency deliveries, time is of the greatest essence. Most often brachial plexus palsy strikes when there is a difficult labor.

Most of the injuries are of the Erb's type. This normally would take anywhere between 3-4 months for the child to recover. Depending on the injury and how severe it is, the recovery period may differ. If your child does suffer from brachial plexus, it is important that your child undergoes physical therapy. If your child's arm does not show improvement even after a couple of months, an MRI may be performed on him or her. If from the MRI it is learned that there is a tare, a nerve graft might be performed. This is a new finding in medical research and few clinics in Europe and the US have employed it and seen results. It seems to offer a promising future for patients suffering from Brachial Plexus. Let us hope for the best!

According to researchers, if recovery is indeed to take place, by the age of 2 the child should recover, if he or she has not, it may mean that they may never recover from it.

Yet another treatment is possible, you can have your child undergoing surgery. School children can go through surgery to rectify this condition. This is mostly done in case of permanent disability.

Money Mastery – Three Easy Steps to Mastering Your Financial Destiny

When I was a kid I was constantly told, "We can not afford that; we can only get this; ask your dad if you can have that; you must save your money for a rainy day; start saving now for retirement." Do not get me wrong, I understand the intent of some of these messages and that they may even hold value for some people but I also have learned that these statements can lead to potential financial paralysis.

By hearing those statements over and over again, I developed what could have been my Money Destiny. That Money Destiny led me to believe I would never have enough money, that I must always save and never spend, and that I was not financially safe. These messages repeated themselves in my mind every time I needed to make a money decision or anytime I thought about money. Soon thereafter I found myself resenting the "mean green" and at times wanting to rebel against it. Thank goodness I realized one day that should I continue down this same Money Destiny road, I was destined to have just enough (not plenty) or none at all for that matter or worry about money constantly, and stay in the middleclass.

When I noticed how I was making decisions that would keep me in the same place and never propel me forward financially, I knew it was time to bust my old patterns, break debilitating money-habits, and create a new money system, a new Money Destiny. Doing this was going to take some mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical work, oh yeah, and financial work as well! It meant I was going to have to stop listening to what I had been told all my years growing up as a child as well as stop playing the "tape recording" of these messages over in my mind. It also meant I was going to have to buck this old system every time it flashed before my eyes! My intention in sharing this article with you is to help you break down your conditioned mindset and build it up with a new one that actually works with you and not against you. This is a mindset that YOU are going to create, nobody else will be creating it for you. Is not that exciting?

So what does mastering money look like? Mastering your money literally boils down to one thing: your mindset. Have you ever noticed that when your bills are paid off for the month and you have some extra "bread" in savings, you are just bouncing around the planet like you are rich (even if you are not)? However, on the contrary, have you noticed that when you do not have enough to make ends meet and you're struggling to figure out where the next dollar will come from to pay your rent or mortgage, you never seem to see the light ? And, have you ever noticed that you actually decided, either consciously or subconsciously, which of those scenarios would play out in your life?

What I would like for you to do is sit for a moment and put yourself into both situations. First, visualize yourself in the moment when you have no money, nothing in the bank, in fact you may be in the negative. You're not going to be paid for another week and all of your bills are due yesterday. What is the first feeling that you notice? Desperation, anger, frustration, helplessness? Take a quick note of that. Now, go to the visual of having money in the bank, all bills paid off and in essence you feel free. You have extra money to do what you would like and everything seems to be going right in the world. Again, take note of the first feeling that pops up for you when sitting in this visualization.

Let's take an even further step. Picture that you are in control of both scenarios. You actually design or choose which will happen in your life. And, you actually choose the same scene over and over again. Which do you choose? Do you choose the visualization with lots of money and financial freedom or do you choose the daunting visual? I venture to guess you wish to choose the one of Money Mastery.

The concept of Money Mastery has to do with having a destination when it comes to money. Some people actually are destined to be rich, middle class or poor. For most of us, we witnessed how our parents behaved with money, listened to things they said and then modeled after them. If our parents were rich, we figured as adults that we, too, had the right to be rich. If our parents were poor, we grew up thinking we did not deserve to have more money so we followed in the footsteps of our poor parents.

I am here to tell you that you do not have to follow in anyone's footsteps when it comes to mastering money except your own. Today, you get to decide your new Money Destiny in just three steps.

Step One: Change Your Money Talk-

As I stated earlier, mastering money has to do with your mind so if you have been saying repeatedly, "I do not have enough money" or "I need more money" then I ventured to guess you have not had enough money for quite some time. So, I challenge you to begin saying (even if you do not believe it in the moment, trust me, you will learn to believe the following statements wholeheartedly), "I have plenty of money," or "I am grateful for the money I have, "or" Money is a precious gift. " These are simple statements yet extremely meaningfulful. These affirmations are packed with power! And here's why: when we hear ourselves say something, we generally believe what we say-whether it's good or bad-we believe it! So, if you are constantly saying, "Money is a precious gift and I am grateful for it," somehow your mind hires that statements and translates it into action. Before you know it you are taking action to have more money in your life or better yet, money is finding its way to you and you did not even lift a finger!

Do you see where I am going with this new verbiage? Positive thoughts become positive feelings which lead to positive actions that grant you positive results.

Step Two: Change Your Money Feelings-

If you feel bad about money all the time you will not get money in return or worse yet, you will spend it like water because you want to get rid of the bad feeling. Makes sense, right? Therefore, it is imperative to change your Money Feelings.

Here's an exercise: Take out a one-dollar bill. Look at it, in fact, examine it. Notice what you like about the one-dollar bill. Is it the color, the images printed on the bill or sometimes it is what is stated on the bill. I want you to find at least two things you like about the dollar. Now, sit there for a moment and FEEL what you like about it. It may help you to close your eyes and just be in the feeling, be in the moment. Now, think about what you can get for just one dollar. Maybe an apple, a banana, an orange. Maybe a pack of gum or two packs of gum even? You can give a tip to somebody after buying a coffee or you can get change for your one-dollar bill and put money in the meter to prevent getting an expensive ticket. Do you see how far that one dollar went? Did this give you a new feeling and new perspective about that bill? For what appeared to be a small bill it certainly turned into big things, did not it?

The idea here is to consistently associate positive feelings with money in order to get more of it. Let me give you another example. I used to get angry every month when I had to pay the bills. I would say to myself, "I get so angry working so hard for my money only to turn around and give it over to somebody else." Then one day it dawned on me that I should be grateful that I have the money to pay the bills in the first place! Suddenly I reframed my thinking to state, "I make plenty of money to pay my bills every month." And believe-it-or-not, I no longer resent that time of the month when I have to pay bills and and more money has been coming my way.

Step Three: Change your Money Behavior-

If when you get your paycheck and you turn right around and spend it then I am going to challenge you to pause for a moment and not take the same action. In fact, I am going to ask you to replace that action with a new action: Paying yourself first. What I suggest to my clients is that they take at minimum 10% of their paycheck and pay themselves first by putting it in a savings account, retirement account or money market account. What is better is if you can automate this so you never even see that 10%. These days, most banks or employers offer an automated savings plan wherever they take whichever percentage you desire and they put it into whatever account you want. This is a great way to begin paying yourself.

Now if you are the type who never spends a dime, I ask you the question, "What exactly are you saving for?" Do not get me wrong, I am not encouraging you to not save your money, but I am encouraging you get really connected to what exactly you are saving for. If you are saving in case of an emergency rather than freedom, excitement, purpose, joy, or love, realize what will manifest is an emergency. My challenge to you then is to change the reason for your saving.

When we stop and really think about the phrase, "Money Talks" we realize just how truthful that is. What's important to note is that we have the power to dictate the conversation with and about money so that it is either a rich conversation full of financial freedom and joy or it is a poor conversation wrought with desperation, frustration and debt. Here, you have been given three powerful steps to Money Mastery. My question to you: Which conversation will you now be having?

A Review of the Suzuki GT500

There has been many motorcycle manufactures that have tried to put a large capacity two stroke engine into their bike while remaining unsuccessful. This was until the Suzuki GT500 showed up and took advantage of the situation with the Suzuki GT500. The Suzuki GT500 offers bikers the first two-stroke engine that requires very little maintenance and offers an oil-injection directly into the crankcases. The GT500 offers innovation that was unseen during its release in 1976.

The GT500 was known as a “short-lived” model due to the fact it was only presented in huge numbers in the United States. This bike was actually blowing away competition that even the 500cc and 650cc bikes couldn’t compete with. Soon after the release of the Suzuki GT500 the Cobra was the new GT500 which provided significant change over its earlier predecessor. Little publicity was needed for the Cobra to make an effect on the market. This was the so called “model of the future.”

The most useful mechanical innovation when it came to the Cobra was the swingarm which was given an almost five inch expansion compared to the earlier released Suzuki GT500. This change gave bikers much more control while biking and helped contribute to Suzuki’s reputation. Many riders also agree the longer seat equipped with the Cobra gave a much more comfortable experience while touring the countryside. The second generation of the Suzuki GT500 also offered more room for a saddlebag, panniers or even a mounting carrier.

The GT500 was stocked with an air-cooled 492cc incline two stroke engine that allowed the bike to reach 46 horsepower quite easily. The length of the bike (2,195 mm) gave an overall better experience while transporting groceries or even giving a friend a ride. In 1968 the Suzuki GT500 was the next sensation for the entire motorcycle community. Today’s standards don’t even compare, especially when it came to the brake system.

The public took this bike by storm and loved every aspect of it from the watermelon shaped petrol tank all the way to the conventional seat. When it came to the Suzuki Cobra almost every aspect of the design was changed for the better. Around a year later Suzuki halted the production of the Cobra to bring a newer model to the table, the Titan. Though a remake of the original GT500 had close to eight remakes.

The Suzuki GT500 is a classic motorcycle that offers a five speed gearbox and chain transmission. The fuel capacity is fairly large for the time being able to hold an entire 17 liters. The bike was actually heavier than many easily weighing in at 195kg. This classic bike is reliable and for the most part maintenance free. Riding this rare bike will have you begging for more and possibly even giving you the idea to ask your friend “how much for the GT500.” Which may not go as good as you hoped for. The Suzuki GT500 is one of a kind with a superb build that lets you take the bike that extra mile.

Giant Cell Arteritis – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Giant cell arteritis, also known as temporal arteritis or cranial arteritis is an inflammation of the lining of the arteries, most commonly in the temporal scalp. Common symptoms include persistent head pain and tenderness, usually in the temple area; decreased vision; scalp tenderness; jaw pain; pain and stiffness in the neck, arms or hips; sudden, permanent loss of vision in one eye; fever; and weight loss. Old age, female sex, white race, and the presence of polymyalgia rheumatica are risk factors for giant cell arteritis.

The Ayurvedic treatment of giant cell arteritis is aimed at treating the symptoms of this condition and preventing complications like blindness, stroke, angina and aortic aneurysm. Medicines like Triphala-Guggulu, Yograj-Guggulu, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha, Saarivadi-Churna, Chandrakala-Ras and Sutshekhar-Ras are used to reduce pain and inflammation in the cranial arteries. Herbal medicines which can be used for this purpose are: Bahava (Cassia fistula), Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Nimba (Azadirachta indica), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Daru Haridra (Berberis aristata), Takla (Clerodendron phomodis), Karanj (Pongamia pinnata), Khadeer (Acacia catechu) and Bhrungraj (Eclipta alba).

Sudden, permanent blindness can be an immediate complication of this condition. This results from swelling in the cranial arteries, which cuts off blood supply and nutrients to the delicate tissue of the eyes. This can be prevented with the timely use of steroids. Ayurvedic medicines like Tapyadi-Loh, Ekangveer-Ras, Kaishor-Guggulu and Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha can also be used for this purpose. In the acute condition, localized blood-letting from the temple areas with the application of leeches can help to tide over the crisis, by reducing pain and inflammation. Ayurvedic medicines need to be continued for a long time in order to prevent a relapse of the condition and long-term complications like aortic aneurysm and stroke.

Because of the risk of serious complications, giant cell arteritis needs to be diagnosed and treated promptly. Education and awareness about this disease in the general public is necessary to enable them to seek medical help at the earliest.

Difference Between Inferiority and Superiority Complex

Inferiority and superiority complexes are both psychological phenomenon with long-lasting feelings of unworthiness and noteworthiness which resulted from early lack of social adaptation and emotional adjustment. These feelings cannot be detected during the early stage but are usually apparent in one’s character, gestures, posture and thinking.

In fact, superiority complex is a psychological defense mechanism of a person who wants to be exceptional just to counter or conceal his or her feelings of inferiority.

It is one of the ways in which a person with an inferiority complex may use as an escape from a dilemma by considering himself or herself as superior even if he or she is not.

Superiority complex is visible in the attitude, character and the opinion of a person about himself/herself. It is misled by haughtiness, arrogance, pride, zest, arrogance, bragging, overbearing behavior, a proneness for hunting mistakes and faults in others and many more.

On the contrary, inferiority complex is a lack of self-worth and a feeling of uncertainty, for not measuring up to standards. It is often subconscious but is developed through a combination of genetic personality characteristics and personal experiences. It occurs when the feelings of inferiority are accentuated in the individual through discouragement or failure. Those who are at risk for developing a complex include people who show signs of low self-esteem or self-worth, have low socioeconomic status, or have a history of depression symptoms.

When an inferiority complex is in full effect, it affects the performance of the individual as well as impact to the individual’s self-esteem. Unconscious psychological and emotional processes can disturb the child’s cognitive learning, and negatively charged feeling-toned memory associations can thwart the learning process.

It dominates the psychical life and is characterized by the feeling of imperfection and lack of achievement in reaching personal goals. The inferiority feeling is only normal when people face extreme life situations. This behavior is caused by the lack of self-esteem and belief in his/her own forces. The inferiority complex causes shyness, pessimism, anxiety or lack of communication.

Emotional manifestations like rage, revenge drive, sorrow, enthusiasm, manifested in inadequate situations, the incapacity of listening or looking into the eyes of someone else, changing the topic of conversation towards his/her own person, are all signs of an inferiority complex evolving towards a superiority complex.

These sentiments are triggered by a lack of social communication or mistakes that the parents made out of love for their kids. Strange as it might sound, the inferiority tendency can be used in a positive way. It can motivate us to solve problems and issues. The superiority bias does not affect those around us; just maintains our high self-esteem.

If our kids are suffering this type of complicated behavior, it is our responsibility as parents, to help them. We are their only hope to understand them. We cannot rely on other people. We cannot even trust the teachers of our kids because they often misjudge this behavior as offensive.

But if we constantly criticize our kids for not living our standards, it won’t help them. Even if we do everything for them; it won’t resolve the problem; rather we let them develop the inability to overcome the problems of life without our assistance.

So, if we want our kids to get rid of inferiority complex, we need to address the real problem and we will be on the right track in building their self-confidence.

Tips For Using Minoxidil and Finasteride For Treating Hair Loss

Minoxidil and finasteride are two excellent options for men and women who want to do something about their hair loss. These are two of the most widely available hair loss medications and have been proven to be effective at preventing further balding and even re-growing hair.

The main difference between minoxidil and finasteride is the application process. Minoxidil is sold as a liquid solution that must be applied directly to the scalp in the area of hair loss. Finasteride is an oral tablet.

Tips on Using Minoxidil – Men:

Minoxidil was the first FDA approved medication for the treatment of hair loss. Minoxidil is a topical solution that is applied directly to the scalp. It can now be purchased without a prescription and in generic formulations in concentrations of 5% (for men) and 2% (for women). The exact mechanism by which minoxidil works is not known, but the drug is felt to increase the duration of the hair follicle growth cycle (called anagen), improving the length and thickness of miniaturized follicles. Minoxidil solution comes in a generic formulation and can be purchased over the counter. The foam is available in brand-name only.

Minoxidil only works where you apply it. Apply it to all areas that are thinning.

:: Minoxidil can work anywhere there is miniaturized hair (where the area is not totally bald)
:: Minoxidil will work in the front part of the scalp and temples if these areas are just starting to thin – so it is important to apply it to the front part of your scalp and hairline if you are thinning in these areas.

Minoxidil must be applied to the scalp to work – it doesn’t work on the hair per se.

:: Minoxidil 5% solution is the most effective if you have some hair, as the solution will be easier to apply to the scalp.
:: If the 5% solution is irritating to your scalp, try the 5% Foam which does not contain propylene glycol, the most common irritant.
:: If the 5% solution is too greasy and you find you are not using it, switch to the foam.

Although the minoxidil works best when used twice a day, using it once a day will also be effective (and better than not using it at all).

:: Many patients find applying the medication once a day at bedtime to be the most convenient way to use it.
:: When using minoxidil once a day, use at least double the recommended dose, so that it will be applied to the entire area of thinning.

Minoxidil can be applied to damp scalp when you first get out of the shower and this can make grooming easier.

For minoxidil to be effective it must be used continually and regularly. Do not stop and start it. You may experience shedding during the first 3-6 months of treatment. This generally is an indication that the medication is working, so unless you are having side effects, do not stop the medication. If you do stop the medication, you will lose all of its benefits (although you will not be any worse off than if you had never used it).

Minoxidil works best when used with finasteride. Of the two medications, finasteride is more effective.

Tips for Women Using Minoxidil – Women:

Minoxidil solution is available in a brand name and a generic formulation and can be purchased over the counter. The foam is still available in brand only.

Minoxidil is generally prescribed as a 2% solution for women to be used twice a day. If twice a day is inconvenient, then use the 5% men’s formulation just once a day.

Minoxidil can cause increased facial hair. Although the 5% is more likely than the 2% to cause this, when the 5% is used one a day, the side effects seem to be about the same.

Minoxidil only works where you apply it. Apply it to all areas that are thinning.

:: Minoxidil can work anywhere there is miniaturized hair (where the area is not totally bald).
:: Minoxidil will work in the front part of the scalp and temples if these areas are just starting to thin.

Minoxidil must be applied to the scalp to work – it doesn’t work on the hair per se.

:: Minoxidil solution is the most effective if you have some hair, as the solution will be easier to apply to the scalp.
:: If the solution is irritating to your scalp, try the Foam which does not contain propylene glycol, the most common irritant.
:: If the solution is too greasy and you find you are not using it, switch to the foam.

Tips on Using Finasteride:

Male pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia is caused by the effects of the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on genetically susceptible hair follicles that are present mainly in the front, top, and crown of the scalp (rather than the back and sides).

Finasteride causes a significant drop in both scalp and blood levels of DHT and its effect is felt to be related to both of these factors. Finasteride 1-mg/day decreases serum DHT levels by almost 70%. Finasteride is a prescription oral medication that is now generic (in the 5mg dose). Speaking at School Assemblies Is Frightening

Have you ever considered speaking at a middle school or high school assembly? You may not have but rest assured that some people are speaking to teenagers at schools across America for a profession. They are getting paid a decent amount for every speech they give at a school.

What is a school assembly?

Throughout the year schools will give their students an ounce of motivation by asking a speaker to come and speak to their students about an important topic. For example, let’s say a school has been bogged down by a bully on campus and the number of bullies continues to grow. In this scenario a school counselor would ask a teen speaker who is an expert in the area of school bullying to come and speak to their students at a school assembly. A school assembly can be defined a body of students who gather to listen to a speaker.

Assemblies usually take place in the gymnasium or cafeteria so that as many student as possible can participate in the event. The event is used to target a specific topic or issue that a school wants to address to their students. Speakers are hired because they can be the neutral person in the room that can say the hard things that students need to hear.

If a Principal gets in front of the students often times that person can come off as mean and students will be turned off by the message. If you are an event planner at school remember that speaking to teenagers is not an easy task and very few can do it.

Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment for Costochondritis

Costochondritis is a medical condition in which there is severe or moderate type of pain which is localised to the chest and usually seen on the rib joints. The pain is aggravated by movement and deep breathing. Costochondritis is usually caused due to repeated, minor trauma or unaccustomed heavy activity. The affected costo-chondral joints are tender to touch and pressure. Anti-inflammatory treatment and pain killers, local application of ointments, adequate rest, graded physical activity, and avoidance of heavy activity form the conservative management of this condition.

Even under normal circumstances, minor trauma to the ribs causes pain which usually lasts for about four to six weeks in spite of taking conventional treatment. Costochondritis, which is inflammation of the joints of the ribs, is usually quite refractory to treatment and this experience can be frustrating both to the affected individual as well as to the treating physician. This condition responds completely to treatment only if the causative factors are examined well and efforts are made to address these issues in a comprehensive manner.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for costochondritis is aimed at giving anti-inflammatory medicines to treat the basic disorder, control pain and tenderness, and also strengthen the costo-chondral joints, so as to avoid recurrence of this situation. Treatment is given in different stages, with control of pain and inflammation forming the first stage. This can be done with oral medication and supplemented by local application of medicines in the form of ointments, pastes, and medicated oils. Local application is usually followed by steam fomentation using herbal decoctions. The application of anti-inflammatory herbal pastes also provides long-term relief from pain and tenderness.

Once pain, swelling and tenderness are brought under control, some medicines with an anti-inflammatory action are continued in a low dose and in addition to these medications, herbal medicines are added which provide a strengthening action to these small joints as well as the ribs and muscles connecting the ribs. This strengthening action provides long-term relief from pain and also helps the affected individual to avoid a recurrence of this situation, as well as develop more tolerance for unaccustomed activity and occupational seating postures.

Some affected individuals do not respond satisfactorily even with the above mentioned treatments. In these situations, it is important to look for other factors which prevent a complete therapeutic response. Stress, depression, generalized weakness and long-term fatigue are some of the factors responsible for this situation. The specific cause needs to be identified and treated with specific medicines. In addition, medicines may also be required to treat depression, stress, and weakness. Herbal medicines which have an immunomodulatory action and which provide long-term strength and vitality to the body are especially useful in this condition.

Such individuals need to develop a daily schedule of regular exercise, relaxation techniques, eat healthy food regularly at prescribed times, and obtain adequate rest and sleep. Meditation, Yogasanas and breathing techniques like Pranayam may also help to achieve control from pain, or reduce sensitivity to pain. Non-irritating and strengthening medicated oils can also be applied on the tender costo-chondral joints on a long term basis, so as to provide complete relief from costochondritis.
