Depression Treatment: What Are The Options?

As with most things in life, depression treatment and its effectiveness, really depends on the individual.

Having said that, it is broadly considered in the medical industry that the best treatment for depression includes psychological treatment and medication.

Whatever the cause of depression, both psychological treatments and medications help to relate the main symptoms.

It is best if a person with depression works together with their doctor or mental health professional, to find the treatment that is right for them.

Some people respond well to psychological treatments, while others respond better to medications.

While some people may only need psychological, "talking" treatment, other people (me included!), Require BOTH psychological treatment and medication.

A word of caution : I am not saying that every person who has depression should take medication. For now what I would like to share with you, are my experiences with depression medication, that I have used to treat my depression.

Before we get into the effectiveness of depression medication, I think that it would be helpful to outline exactly what medications are used to treat depression.

Medication Used To Treat Depression

The most common medications to treat someone with depression are anti-depressants.

So what are anti-depressants?

They are indications that are designed to reduce or cure the effects of depression.

Types Of Anti-depressants

There are many types of anti-depressants available. Each type, family or class has its own method of helping depression.

Within the classes, each drug is slightly different. There are side-effects and warnings common to each class of antidepressants, and many of the individual drugs have additional side-effects or warnings as well.

Let's take a closer look at each family of anti-depressants, starting with the one most people have heard about.

SSRI stands for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. These medications work by preventing the neurotransmitter serotonin from being reabsorbed by the nerve cell that released it, thereby forcing the serotonin to keep actively working.

SSRI's include:

  • Fluoxetine.
  • Sertraline – this is what I take to manage my depression.

These two terms are essentially synonymous.

SNRI stands for serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, while SSNRI stands for selective serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, but there really is not any appreciable difference.

Both duloxetine and venlafaxine are SNRI's. I was on a venlafaxine for 3 years before it seemed to stop working for me.

There are other classes or family of anti-depressants, but the above 2 are what I have used, and I do not want this article to be too technical!

Unfortunately, when it comes to anti-depressants, one size does not fit all! It is only through trial and error by trying the anti-depressants your doctor or psychiatrist prescribes, until you find one that works for you.

Also, it is trial and error with the dosage amount. Each time that I was put on an anti-depressant, my psychiatrist started with a low dosage and increased it as need be over time.

As with all prescribed medications, there are possible side-effects. I was lucky with both venlafaxine and sertraline in that the only side-effects I had with each anti-depressant was a headache and mild nausea.

These side-effects only rented a few days, so it was a small price to pay for the huge positive benefit that they haveave me.

It is important to note, that a doctor or psychiatrist should monitor a person's anti-depressant medication to see if it is still working and if the dosage is correct.

How Anti-Depressants Work

Anti-depressant medications help reduce the symptoms of depression.

These symptoms of depression include:

  1. Feeling extremely sad for no particular reason.
  2. Loss of interest or pleasure in things you usually enjoy.
  3. Sleeping too much or too little.
  4. Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt or worry.
  5. Difficulty in thinking, making decisions or concentration.

People with depression often have an imbalance in certain natural chemicals in the brain. So anti-depressant medications work by helping the brain to restore its usual chemical balance and theby reduce symptoms.

I often get asked the question, "How long does it take for them to work?"

For me, it took 2 to 3 weeks for the anti-depressants to work. But my research indicates that it can take up to six weeks after the first dose of medication before it has an anti-depressant effect.

For some people it can take up to eight weeks or a little longer before they start to feel better, and the maximum benefit is felt after six months.

Anti-depressant medication is generally very effective. Around 70% of people with major depression start to feel better with the first type of anti-depressant they are prescribed.

Before I started taking anti-depressants my depression just became worse and worse. Even though I was using "taking therapy", there was not much progress in my depression symptoms. My "break-through" with my depression only occurred once I started taking anti-depressants.

Psychological Treatments

Psychological treatments used by psychologists and psychiatrists are very effective in helping a person to treat and even recover from depression.

I would go so far as to say that my psychological treatment has been instrumental in treating my depression to the extent that I now live a very happy and joyful life.

What are Psychological Treatments?

One of the most effective psychological treatments is Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT).

  • CBT is a structured program which recognizes that the way people think affects the way they feel.
  • CBT teachers people to think rationally about common difficulties, helping a person to change their thought patterns and the way they react to certain situations.
  • I like to think of CBT as "My thoughts affect my feelings."

When people are depressed, they may think negatively about:

  1. Themselves eg "I'm a failure.", "Nobody would miss me if I died."
  2. The world eg "The world is a cruel and scarey place."
  3. Their future eg "I have nothing to live for and my life will not get any better."

Negative thinking interferees with recovery and makes the person more vulnerable to depression in the future. It is important to recognize unhelpful thoughts and replace them with more rational and realistic thoughts.

This is why I find CBT so powerful as it provides me with the tools that I need to challenge my negative thoughts.

Another psychological treatment is Interpersonal Therapy (IPT).

IPT is used when a person with depression is easily upset by other people's comments. They may feel criticized when no criticism was intended. So what IPT does, is it helps people find different ways to get along with others.

And then there is Family Therapy.

Family therapy helps family members and close friends learn about depression and recognize that it is a real medical illness that can be treated.

Family and close friends of a depressed person need to know more about the illness because their support and understanding is very important.

Concluding Thoughts …

A person who is depressed may need the help of an anti-depressant to treat their depression, and should consult their doctor. The earlier that depression is treated, the greater the chance of a quicker recovery.

If the first anti-depressant that a person tries does not work, they must not get discouraged as they can try another one, that may really make a difference in helping them with their depression.

Once a person starts taking an anti-depressant, their mood should be monitored closely by a doctor or psychiatrist.

In addition to anti-depressants, I highly recommend that a person who has depression, see a psychologists or a psychiatrist for CBT.

This 2 pronged approach has worked very well for me for the past 20 years and I will continue with both the anti-depressants and CBT to ensure that I maintain the great quality of life I have today.

Depression treatment is available to help a person who has depression. Never give up! Depression is not the whole of you, it is merely part of you, that can be treated.

The Cycle of Anxiety and Depression Symptoms

Anxiety and depression symptoms often co-exist, meaning that if you suffer from one problem you could be at risk for developing the other as well. This makes it critically important to take the time to educate yourself about depression and anxiety in order to learn how to combat the symptoms of these two conditions.

In many cases, depression and anxiety form a vicious cycle. Individuals who suffer from depression may find that symptoms such as sadness, hopelessness and loneliness give way to fear and anxiety. Likewise, the symptoms can create feelings of hopelessness and sadness. One of the main problems with the co-existence of depression and anxiety is that the two conditions tend to feed off one another. For example, when your depression creates anxiety symptoms which symptoms can cause you to feel even more depressed and exhausted; making your depression even worse.

Typically, it can be difficult to determine which condition came into existence first; however, the important key is to find out as much as you can about each disorder so that you can begin to take part in effective treatment techniques to get your life back.

It is important to understand when seeking recovery that every individual is different and so is their experience with anxiety and depression symptoms. This is because while many of the symptoms of these two conditions are the same, not everyone experiences them in the same way. In addition, due to the fact that anxiety can take on many forms, your experience may be completely different than someone else who also suffers from anxiety and depression. For example, in some individuals, symptoms manifest themselves as reliving traumatic events from the past. Other individuals may be terrified of social situations due to their anxiety while some people experience bouts that are identified by severe symptoms like pain and a racing heart.

All forms have three main factors in common. They are:

• Extreme fear when there is no real danger present

• Emotional distress that actually interposes with your daily life

• A propensity for avoiding situations that are perceived to be linked with the anxiety

It should also be kept in mind that while we all feel sad from time to time, if you suffer from anxiety it is imperative that you begin to recognize the early warning signs of depression so that it can be treated along with your anxiety. These early warning signs and symptoms include:

• Continuous feelings of sadness, tension or irritability

• Loss of energy

• Decreased pleasure or interest in usual hobbies or activities

• Change in sleeping patterns

• Change in appetite

• Significant weight loss or weight gain

• Restlessness

• Difficulty concentrating, thinking or making decisions

• Feelings of guilt, hopelessness or worthlessness

• Thoughts of death or suicide.

By recognizing anxiety and depression symptoms [] and seeking effective treatment methods, it is possible to recover from these symptoms and get your life back.

The Importance of Complete Internal Cleansing

A large majority of people are in the throes of various diseases and ailments. Most of the diseases and health problems that people suffer from nowadays are either lifestyle related or are caused because of unhealthy style of living. So we have people suffering with diseases ranging from chronic coughs, colds and allergies to chronic fatigue syndrome, which are all caused because of a stressful lifestyle and improper diet. On top of this, there are many diseases which cure is not available in modern medicine and which can be treated only symptomatically. In such cases, one can always explore the option of alternative medicine, especially when it comes to cleansing the body of toxins, which is extremely necessary in order to lead a healthy life.

Why Is Internal Cleansing Important?

Almost all of us have subjected our bodies and organs to an overload of toxins. We keep acquiring toxins through the food we eat, the air we breathe and the water we drink. Our diet is full of processed, fatty and unhealthy food which is generally overeaten. On top of this, we severely abstain from smoking and drinking either. To top this, most of us do not even exercise as much as we should and keep on taking medicines for every little cut, bruise or sneeze that we get. On the other hand, our extremely demanding professional and personal lives are leaving us extremely stressed, which further increases the amount of toxins in our body. These toxins are the major cause of most chronic diseases, ranging from fungal infections, acne and constipation to headaches, colds, acidity and other chronic conditions. Our organs have not been made for dealing with such a large amount of toxins and therefore these poisons slowly keep on accumulating in our body and causing different illnesses. Therefore, routine detoxification or internal cleansing is extremely important in order to keep your organs healthy and to lead a healthy life.

What Does Internal Cleansing Entail?

A complete internal cleansing regimen involves a colon cleansse followed by parasite removal and liver flushing or cleansing. Most alternative medicine practitioners advise that you carry out internal cleansing at least once a year to get the optimum performance from your organs. A colon cleansing, which involves the consumption of either psyllium husk and bentonite clay shakes three to five times a day for at least two weeks is the first step of internal cleansing. This is because the toxins removed during parasite and liver flushing will not be completely removed from the body if the colon is choked with mucoid plaque. In case you suspect that you have parasites then you should follow colon cleansing with parasite cleansing using natural herbs and ingredients. This should then be followed by liver flushing using natural ingredients and an enema. A complete cleansing will rid you of all kinds of diseases ranging from constipation, acne, acid reflux, gastritis, allergies and other chronic ailments while increasing your immunity. It will also optimize the performance of not just your GI system but also other organs and help you in acquiring nutrition better.

The Fear for Panic Attacks

During those eras when man is still trying to preserve his lines on earth, he must have kindly benefited from a mechanism called as panic attacks. You may have heard of fight or flight mechanism. Well, this is it.

With the absence of devices that could lengthen his survival (which we know are impossible to be created during the Stone Age period) he has to learn some adaptations. One, to flight from the prey and two, to fight if he has no other means.

These two are very simple yet highly effective response towards self-preservation. That's why it has to be fast, it must come from something that men can not detect. He needs to run to save himself from an animal or to fight to be able to deflect a member of another tribe. He has to do it quick.

Well, it seems like he has carried the mechanism until these days.

Although we obviously do not need these mechanisms these days as they are interpreted above, we are still likely to present them as parts of our existence as survival beings.

But for some people, panic attacks did not work well, in fact they worked negatively.

Why does panic attacks feel so strange? What really goes on in the psyche of a person having a panic attack?

As your body feels tension thought about by thoughts that may or may not be grounded on physical bases, it has to release adrenaline and other hormones to help you increase mechanisms that will help you survive. Appropriately, these hormones such as adrenaline and the likes aid in speeding up heart palpitations, which cause other systems to react.

In effect, more pressure in the heart will cause the blood rushing to the body. It will also raise the heartbeats of the person which would normally appeal to the sufferer as a symptom of a certain condition.

Your legs as well as your arms may shake which may trigger you to run. Your palms will then become sweaty to equip you with better grip.

You will feel like vomiting. And so your sensations are heightened to something wrong is happening in your body.

These symptoms can be emphasized with the sensation of choking or chest pain. Along with dizziness and paresthesias or numbness / tingling sensations.

These symptoms of anxiety attacks, when combined can cause the sufferer to think that he is on the verge of death. Either death from stroke, suffocation, heart attack, or is going crazy. And these thoughts alone are enough to make him become panicky, tensed and very uncomfortable with himself. It is also likely that after such an episode, he will expect regularly that such may come to him again, and again, and again.

Once the person overcomes an episode, his initial response would be to develop a fear over the same incident. Secondly, he will try to take control of the condition. Yet he will not have it … atleast consciously.

In panic attacks the control is shifted from the conscious mind to the subconscious. Thus it feels more like the person can not be in command of his sensations.

The peak of any panic attacks lasts only from 10 to 12 minutes, the sensations will all be gone after an episode. However, the after effects are far worse. They would linger and they would eat the person's well being.

Stress, Cancer and Hypnosis – How Does Hypnosis Help?

Stress hormones may play a new role in speeding up cancer growth. New research suggests that hormones produced during periods of stress may actually increase the growth rate of a particularly nasty kind of cancer.

A recent study at the Institute for Behavioral Medicine Research at Ohio State University, shown that an increase in norepinephrine, which is a stress hormone, can stimulate tumor cells to produce two compounds. These compounds then go ahead and break down the tissue around the tumor cells and allow the cells to more easily move into the bloodstream. Then, they travel to another site in the body to form additional tumors. This is the process which is called metastasis.

It was shown that the same hormone can also stimulate the tumor cells to release another compound that can aid in the growth of new blood vessels that feed cancer cells, hastening the growth and spread of the disease. This work was reported in the journal Cancer Research.

Research scientists at Ohio State University, then also focused on the role of these compounds. Two of them, both matrix metalloproteinases – MMP-2 and MMP-9 – play a role in breaking down the way that cells attach to in order to maintain their shape. The third compound, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), is important in the growth of new blood vessels into tumor cells.

An interesting earlier work by the University of Texas had shown that the same stress hormones can stimulate ovarian tumor cells to produce these three compounds. The key to that discovery was that the two stress hormones – epinephrine and norepinephrine – would bind to places on the surface of ovarian cancer cells, called adrenergic receptors, and stimulate the release of MMP-2, MMP-9 and VEGF which might then foster cancer growth.

It was found by the Ohio study group that MMP-2 and MMP-9 contribute to the aggressiveness of tumors. It was not exactly clear as to how they are operating but they may work to facilitate blood vessel growth in new tumors so that they can grow.

It seems to me that using hypnosis as a way to deal with and release stress is a "no-brainer". Hypnosis is known to work with the autonomous nervous system and shut off sympathetic responses that can leave our body out of balance in the hypothalamus, pituitary adrenal axis response. We can use hypnosis as a way to also help with emotional healing which is a stress reliever within itself. Perhaps, with emotional healing we can shut off the instructions that our body was given to allow the cancer cells to go out of control. Our bodies know how to repair. They are programmed for health.

Mom "A" Vs Mom "B"

Mom "A" vs Mom "B" what is the difference?

Mom 'A': "You can not do that"

Mom 'B': "Why not?"

Mom 'A': "Because that's not normal"

In terms of 'normal', Mom 'A' could be referring to literally anything.

Moms should not start thriving businesses because it takes time away from them raising their children.

Moms should not have any tattoos.

Moms should not be physically fit, care about what they eat or dress in anything other than 'Mom attire'.

Moms should not place a premium on asking their children to be creative rather than providing "done-for-you" play opportunities.

And while there is nothing wrong with clinging to the old guard standards of 'normal', the caveat is whether or not you first asked 'why' …

Why is 'un-normal' bad, wrong or otherwise misguided?

Moreover, does Mom 'A' have actual proof that the 'un-normal' issue at hand must be defined as 'not good', or is it purely her opinion based on personal beliefs or the collective Zeitgeist?

And remember, the word 'Zeitgeist' refers to prevailing opinions of society within a specific time period; 200 years ago, any woman who showed her ankles in public was considered a whore.

This is not a 'Call-All-Moms-To-Arms' message or me asking you to revolt in disgust and hostility at any powers that be who may be keeping you 'down' in life …

… It's just a thoughtful memo asking you to consider.

"Worried about what they'll think" has kept too many Moms down for too long.

Do what you want; Zeitgeists change when revolutionary thinkers decide to change them …

Acid Reflux – Medicine Side Effects Reported

Other side effects from fish oil supplements that have been reported by some people include a laxative effect, indigestion and heartburn. Heartburn is rarely a serious problem, and with a few diet and lifestyle configurations, you can go a long way in preventing the possible causes of heartburn. A person with bulimia nervosa often complains about dizziness, pain in the abdomen and chest, weakness, cramps, sore throat and even heartburn.

People who have taken any of these drugs for more than a year have a 44% higher risk of hip fractures than non-users of heartburn medications. Lets not forget the joy of heartburn, when you are desperate for sleep you lay back and what happens. If heartburn is a continual or severe problem, it's a good idea to see your doctor.

Those who are overweight put too much pressure on the esophageal sphincter, which leads to reflux of the contents of the stomach into the esophagus, and heartburn, follows. Take medication – If you suffer from chronic heartburn and take medication for your condition, such as over-the-counter H2 blocker (Pepcid, Zantac, etc. Everything from food to drink to body post could bring on an episode of heartburn but it's not something you need to put up with everyday.

Watch Your Dairy Intake Have you ever grabbed a glass of milk for indigestion or heartburn. If stomach problems like heartburn or acid reflux prevent you from getting a good night's rest, consider sleeping on your left side. Consequently, it is difficult to say how apple cider vinegar remedies heartburn.

Baking soda for heartburn is only a temporary relief option and should be treated as such. If you have a chronic heartburn related problem you should seek help from your family medical professional. The growth of the uterus puts a lot of pressure on all the other organs in the body causing heartburn indigestion, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, and lots of aches and pains.

Hard Drive Size – Why It’s Important

The hard drive disk of a computer is the primary storage device of the computer. It is a non-removable device that retains all the information when the computer is turned off. A fast hard drive supplies the computer with data as fast as it needs. Hard drives are measured in Gigabytes (GB) and the larger the number, the more storage the computer has. When looking at purchasing a new home computer or laptop, it is important to understand how the hard drive works with your computer and how much storage capacity you will need.

When saving information on your computer, the application is recorded on a magnetic platter inside the hard drive. Most hard drives have several platters that allow them to spin up to 15,000 times per minute. The amount of hard drive space the computer has will affect how much data that can be saved. The data on a hard drive can be deleted or erased from the memory at any time and does not need a constant power supply to save the information.

It used to be that hard drives were small and had a capacity of no more than 5 MB, now most new computers and laptops have no less than 40 GB. Some hard drive capacities can exceed 120 GB. Today, computers with these capabilities can store a massive amount of information, videos and photos without getting bogged down.

Choosing a hard drive can be confusing if you are not familiar with what to look for. Hard drives can have a very high capacity and they can be very small. It is important when looking at hard drive for your computer or laptop to know what you need. Performance in a hard drive can vary dramatically. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to save information and learning your hard drive is full. If you plan on using your hard drive to store a minimum amount of information, you may not need to spend the extra money on a bigger hard drive.

For storing large files, videos, music and pictures, your computer will need to be equipped with a larger amount of hard drive space. You can purchase 160 GB and bigger of hard drive space on most computers. The general rule of thumb for purchasing hard drive space is to purchase the largest amount of space you think you will need and that you can afford.

Price is another factor when choosing the right hard drive size. The most common size of hard drive for the money ranges from 60 to 80 gigabytes. These hard drive sizes are readily available on most operating systems. They are a good economical choice for computer users needing the computer for everyday storage and use.

Besides the size of the hard drive and purchase price consider access times and transfer rates when looking at hard drives. The transfer rate is how much data can be transferred per second. This can vary though, depending on the condition of the computer. A computer that is nearly full may have a much slower transfer rate.

Transfer rates come in either internal or external. The internal transfer rate is how fast the hard drive can read the date. The external transfer rate is how fast the drive can speed data to whatever it is connected to. Usually, the transfer rate will be a little slower than listed, so it is best to get a faster transfer rate. The external rate is link to the type of hard drive that the computer is using.

Be aware that hard drive speed is affect by the computer’s capabilities. If your computer is slow, a bigger and faster hard drive will do you little good. Also, if your computer is operating slowly, a bogged down hard drive may be the problem. If your computer system is running slow, deleting unnecessary files from the hard drive. Defrag is another option used to optimize slow hard drive systems.

Fragmentation of the hard drive occurs when the operating system breaks a saved file into separate pieces and stores them in other places. This usually happens when there is not enough room to store all the date. Defrag takes those stored file fragments and pieces them back together again. The process can be time consuming, but is a good way to optimize hard drive space and the speed of the computer.

But … is not that the way with all research tools: you gotta figure out which is the good stuff that you can use, and which is the bad stuff that you've just spent the last two hours looking over and have now figured out is pretty worthless. Yea, the Internet is like that – in spades.

7. Trade Shows Mailing Lists

Trade shows are great marketing events, and trade show lists are also great marketing tools. You can usually buy mailing lists of both attendees and of exhibitors. Check out two great websites: one is and the other for trade show information. The Tradeshow Week Data Book is a great tool published by the editors of Tradeshow Week Magazine.

8. The Enemy

You've been surprised how many of your competitors will sell your customers' names to mail to. If not competitors, how about asking other businesses who serve your market if you can purchase their mailing lists. Warranty lists and data, registrations, some firms just seem to warehouse data that would make a great direct mail list to someone.

9. House List

Of course, the best list of all – bar none – is your own direct marketing list of current and past customers. These are the folks that know you and trust you; they've experienced that great customer service you offer and are now willing to buy something else from you if you would only let them know it's available. Spend some extra time in this most important area of list research: tighten your list criteria, do your homework, spend time in research, and find the best mail lists you can possibly find. Then test several.

Selecting a direct mail list is not as rewarding as generating the creative for a new glitzy 4-color brochure, or an exciting mailing package. But it shows up where it counts the most – in your bottom line. The better your direct mail list, the better your response. Guaranteed.

It's worth the extra time and money to target your audience with precision and increase the chance you'll come up a winner at the post office. There is no single more important factor in creating a greater response to a mailing than mailing to the best possible list. Whatever you do, do not settle for a mediocre list unless you want mediocre results. The better the list, the greater the response.

Relaunch yourself with viagra

Remembering old old days, when even your worse enemies swore by your masculinity, can prove to be ego-satisfier for the patients suffering form Erectile Dysfunction (impotence). It's the big male ego that hurts the most with impotence. The psychological effect of ED is profound so much so that the toughest of looking guys can sink into deep depression. The failure to sexually satisfy the female can be taken as a big slur to the manhood of the patient.

But everything is not lost for the sufferers of ED even though impotence is incurable. ED can be treated with easy-to-oral oral pills. The most prominent and market leader is Viagra. Manufactured by Pfizer Inc., Viagra obtained the approval of the Unites States Food and Drug Authority (FDA), as the first prescribed oral treatment drug for Erectile Dysfunction, in 1998. And from then on, the sales graph of Viagra zoomed northwards in no time and the cash registers of Pfizer have never stopped ringing. Over 30 million impotent men in the US suddenly found an outlet they were looking for. Their proverbial 'mojo' was bestowed back to where it belonged.

Viagra brave the impotent men a reason to jive. Their sagging sexual lives and fast-turning fragile relationships with the partners suddenly got the much-needed boost. Men felt their lost manhood is restored and the women felt as if they are losing virginity for the first time!

It is the ease of treatment that treated the fancy of impotent men. You just have to pop the pill about an hour before the intended sexual act. Viagra does the rest. What more? Viagra does not work until the sexual organs are titillated and stimulated for the act. So, the perception of Viagra as some sort of an aphrodisiac or sex pill is out of the window. Viagra is a blessing for the impotent men and his partner to enjoy the most prominent natural instinct among humans.

Is Your Diet Fighting or Fueling Joint Pain?

Do you have joint pain? Perhaps difficulty getting up from a chair or out of bed? Been diagnosed with arthritis or an inflammatory condition? Then this is important information you need to read!

FOOD IS OUR FUEL, like gasoline to a car. What we put into our bodies will move you towards disease or it will move you towards health. Have you heard the saying “which dog are you feeding?” Well, the “dog” that gets fed will always win over the “dog” that gets starved. The same holds true for disease and pain. If you feed it, it will get stronger.

But what exactly is the “dog” that you’re feeding? THE REAL CULPRIT IS INFLAMMATION.

Inflammation is the real cause behind virtually all pain and disease – including joint pain!

When we have pain, it’s a signal from the body that something isn’t working correctly. And we become very motivated to relieve that pain. BUT what we should focus on is actually correcting the cause of the pain, not just masking it away every few hours with painkillers. Or resigning ourselves to suffer. To correct the cause of joint pain we need to go after the inflammatory process that’s likely been brewing beneath the surface of the body for years.

You might be wondering – how do we get all of this inflammation? The primary cause of inflammation is our food. That means we can use powerful nutrient products and our food to change the inflammatory processes!

It’s important to note that in addition to joint pain, chronic inflammation is also the deadly consequence of both heart disease and cancer. Heart Disease is currently responsible for every 1 in 4 deaths and in 2015, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that cancer kills 1,620 people every day.

  • Joint Pain and/or arthritis
  • Having an inflammatory condition (such as rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Decreased mobility (joint don’t “move well” and are stiff)
  • Difficulty getting up from a chair or out of bed
  • Digestive complaints (such as bloating or constipation)
  • Elevated cholesterol panel or heart disease
  • Sugar handling issues or diabetes
  • Skin problems (such as rashes, hives, eczema or psoriasis)

DO I FIGHT INFLAMMATION OR FEED IT? Some of these answers may surprise you!

Here are some examples of lifestyle behaviors that promote inflammation:

  • Eating grains (such as pasta, bread, oatmeal, sandwiches, crackers)
  • Consuming sugar (fruit, stevia, honey, soda, jams, snacks, granola bars, cookies)
  • Regular dairy or yogurt use (which contains a form of sugar)
  • Alcohol use (which triggers inflammation)
  • Poor sleep habits
  • High stress levels

Here are some examples of lifestyle behaviors that are anti-inflammatory:

  • Eating leafy, dark greens daily (did you know: spinach has more calcium than milk!)
  • Using powerful anti-inflammatory nutritional supplements (like Vitamin D, Omega 3s)
  • Stress-relief techniques (such as meditation or yoga) to reduce cortisol
  • Using more “good fats” in the kitchen
  • Avoiding processed foods
  • Reducing consumption of non-organic or non-free range meats

Avoid Grains: A resource I’d recommend is the book Wheat Belly by Dr. Davis.

Assess your sleep habits: Sleep is our body’s time to heal! It’s so important for our joints because while we sleep, our discs and joints are filling with new nutrients and hydration. So what’s keeping you from attaining a good night’s sleep? Neck pain? Worrying keeping you awake? Is there something you can do to address this?

Get active: A walk around the neighborhood would be a great place to start!

Simple Changes in the Kitchen:

  • Choose eggs that are organic / free range because studies show they contain significantly more anti-inflammatory “good fats”!
  • Using high quality healthy oils when cooking (such as olive oil or coconut oil)
  • Drinking green tea naturally lowers inflammation

If you have health conditions or use medications, please seek the advice of a nutritional professional or Functional Medicine Physician who can help you correct disease processes by using powerful, research-proven natural products and teaching lifestyle change habits.

Infertility to Fertility: The Road to a Successful Pregnancy

Are you struggling with Infertility? Have you been trying to get pregnant for over a year? Have you miscarried? A diagnosis of "infertility" does not necessarily mean the end of the road. Through a description of common causes of infertility and an understanding of how the body works, it becomes possible to improve your chances of conceiving and having a healthy baby! In this article, we will take a closer look at the common causes of infertility and discuss how you might increase your chances for becoming pregnant by tuning into your body's unique signals.

In order for a woman to become pregnant there has to be a viable ovum (egg) and sperm has to be able to reach that egg. Some conditions that prevent ovulation include diet, age, sexually transmitted diseases or cysts that cause blockage to the fallopian tubes, damage to the uterine lining, excess gain or loss of weight, and physical changes caused by medical and hormonal influences. If a woman is not having a regular menstrual cycle this is an indication that she is not ovulating.

Low sperm count, or lack of sperm production, can also affect fertility. Sperm count can be affected by health problems, environmental toxins (radiation, certain medications, drug use, alcohol, etc.), age, and genetic factors. Some sperm are poorly developed and have difficulty reaching the egg. The man's inability to impregnate a woman is associated with about one-third of infertility difficulties. Both men and women experience physiological changes with age that may also increase the chance of infertility and birth defects.

However, there are ways to improve your chances for experiencing a healthy pregnancy and delivery. Holistic techniques and methods such as the Fertility Awareness Method (FAM) allow women to take charge of their own natural body rhythm, thereby enabling them to increase their chances of becoming pregnant.

The beauty of understanding how the body functions is that it empowers a woman by enabling her to tune into and predict her body's unique signs. There are many books, articles, and materials available on the internet that help explain the details of natural methods for improving fertility. By learning the rhythm of her body, a woman who has been unable to conceive will often find herself pregnant within a few short months. Holistic methods: self-awareness, herbal remedies, and changes in diet and health can have very positive effects.

When you begin to understand the causes of infertility and better understand your own physiology, you may be able to successfully alter the cycle of infertility and move down the road towards conception, pregnancy, and the delivery of a healthy, thriving baby!
