What Happens to Boys Raised by Mothers With Borderline Personality Disorder?

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a disorder with criteria found in the DSM-IV and is characterized by avoidance of abandonment, identity disturbance, chronic emptiness, affective instability, self-harming behaviors along with common problems as extreme black-and-white thinking and emotional dysregulation. More women than men are commonly diagnosed with BPD, somewhere in the 2:1 to 9:1 ratios depending on sources. The numbers of women in treatment programs across the country disproportionately outnumber men, which is an indication that women of all ages, mothers and daughters, are more likely to be treated than boys or men.

Quite a bit has been written about girls and women with borderline personality disorder. But little research exists about how boys experience their mothers that are suffering with the BPD criteria, such as intense emotional dysregulation, unstable relationship patterns, fears of abandonment, or identity disturbance. Are boys being impacted in ways that most professionals and educators may not recognize? Understanding the problems that may stem from the BPD mother-son dynamic could help families and professionals prevent young males from being misunderstood or mislabeled as aggressive, defiant, or antisocial, so that these boys are not being marginalized, but instead they are given the amount of clinical treatment that girls and women often receive.

This is not to say that every son of a mother with BPD has a negative experience. Sons can experience the “good-enough-mother” and mature through developmental stages with few disturbances. However, when the relationship goes poorly, sons can suffer with serious psychological and emotional problems that impair a boy’s development and create lifelong identity problems well into manhood.

Emotional dysregulation, a common problem among BPD sufferers, is like riding a rollercoaster. If a boy never knows what to expect from one moment to the next, a mother’s roller coaster emotions can trigger real confusion and impact self-worth when he cannot seem to please her. The emotional invalidation that stems from this dynamic may create in a boy a constant need to seek validation. Or, he may detach from his emotions and stuff them, because the emotions are perceived as unacceptable.

Similarly, unstable mother relationship patterns vacillating between the polarities of available versus unavailable motherly affection and distant versus intense emotional enmeshment, along with fits of anger and abandonment anxiety can create a world of instability, distrust, and confusion about a boy’s relationship with his mother. He may develop distrust for other individuals as he matures into adulthood.

Black-and-white thinking, a common problem often based in irrational fears, can create rigid rules and expectations for a young boy to navigate, which may foster a need to be perfect in order to please his mother. Perfectionism comes with high emotional costs, such as extremes in thinking, anxiety, and irrational thought patterns that take over one’s life and cause problems in interpersonal relationships. Identity confusion, another criterion, causes problems in several areas of male identity development related to self-confidence, self-image, sexual identity, career choices, and long-term goals. An enmeshed mother-son relationship can harm a son’s sense of independence and autonomy. He may find himself riddled with guilt as he desires to achieve independence and yet fears that he is abandoning her.

Finally, the self-harming and para-suicidal behaviors of a mother with BPD can be extremely traumatic and may even contribute to the development of posttraumatic stress disorder, especially if his mother’s threats are repeated or if her suicide is successful. The subsequent trauma can skew a boy’s overall sense of security, because the suicidal gestures may be perceived as abandonment and cause a boy to fear loss.

This dynamic between a mother with BPD and her son has serious implications for a boy’s emotional life well into manhood. Families and educators can help these young men to emotionally recover and mature. Healthier emotional lives can be achieved through stable relationships and a validating environment. But, sometimes, a young man may need more intensive help by working with a psychotherapist to address the deeper issues around a poor self-image or lack of confidence. It’s important to realize that early therapeutic interventions can make a positive difference in helping a young man develop a healthy self-image with lifelong implications for a better life and relationships.

What Kind of Doctor Should I Go to For Thinning Or Shedding Hair?

I get a lot of emails asking for advice about finding a doctor who will listen and help with hair loss or shedding issues.  People often ask questions like: “is there a type of doctor who specializes in hair loss?” or “how do I find a doctor who will take this shedding seriously because I can’t stand this any longer?”  I will try to address these concerns in the following article.

Ruling Out Medical Causes For Your Hair Loss Or Shedding: The reason that you may eventually want to just run this by a doctor is that although the majority of people with hair issues have them for genetic reasons, there are medical issues and medications that can negatively effect your hair also.  If your hair isn’t changing for the better and / or isn’t responding to treatment, then you may want to check your hormones (thyroid, adrenal, sex, etc.), iron levels, autoimmune markers, and cortisol levels just to name a few.  Most general practitioners can and will handle this and if the work up is done by your primary care, then often insurance will cover it.

But, I have to tell you that most people hit a dead end here.  The “normal limits” for most tests and blood work is very broad.  You could well be in what is normal range for the general population but is not a normal range for you.

Endocrinologists: Many people will make the next stop at an endocrinologist to rule out conditions like PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), hypothyroidism, graves disease, Hashimoto’s, adrenal fatigue / failure and other endocrine disorders.

Rheumatologists: Many folks with hair loss will eventually consider autoimmune disorders like lupus or AA (alopecia areata)  as a cause of the issue.  It’s generally a rheumatologist who can test for these things and rule them out.  Some (myself included) believe that so called “soft” autoimmune disorders like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, or interstitial cystitis can also be culprits.

Gynecologist / Anti Aging Doctors: Women in particular will often turn to their ob / gym to try to balance or boost their hormones as these fluctuations can often cause shedding or a thinning out of the hair.  Many feel that anti aging doctors are more receptive to this.  Here’s what I’ve experienced as the problem with this.  When you’re a shedder and you’re a woman, it’s often because you’re hormonally vulnerable meaning your body can not tolerate even small changes.  So, experimenting with or adding hormones can sometimes back fire and make the problem worse.

Dermatologists: Many people turn to dermatologists for androgen or hereditary hair loss and thinning or for problems with the scalp that is contributing to the loss.

Neuropaths: This is often where people turn in frustration because traditional physicians often are perceived as unsympathetic, hurried, or not interested as this is perceived as not a life threatening condition.  Many will look at you, reassure you that you look normal, give the test, find normal limits and tell you not to stress so much. Neuropaths are said to take more time, but they aren’t typically covered by insurance and many take a “try this and see” approach.

Trichologists: These guys are physicians that specialize in hair loss.  However, you have to be careful here because many of these are tied into hair restoration clinics that perform hair replacement surgery.  This is a solution for some, but many people see this as a last resort. Still, if you can find a good one, it can be worth the trip.

Cheap Pool Tables – The Pros and Cons of Buying a Used Pool Table

Buying a pool table is not a decision to be taken lightly and buying cheap pool tables can prove to be costly if you are not sure what to look for. In this article I will try to cover the main things you should look at when planning to buy a cheap or used secondhand pool or billiard table.

The rails and cushions on a pool table are extremely important and if they are not set at the correct height or are badly worn then the bounce from the cushion will be dead. A good table felt and good cushions should allow you to hit the ball around the table off of all four cushions without using your hardest cue stroke. If you cannot hit four cushions then there is a problem.

Cheap Pool Tables often have lower quality cushions and rails, however you can replace them.

You will find various materials and different design principles applied with rubber cushions. The cushions are usually made from an elastic material such as vulcanized (gum or synthetic) rubber.

3 You can invite friends and family to play and this makes for a lot of fun.

The Cons

1. Your cheap table is more likely going to be a used table so you will probably need to arrange transport to get it delivered. (When you buy a new table this is normally included in the price)

2. If you are not an expert you could be buying a table which has some defects (can cost more in the long run if you have to replace any parts of your table)

3. Some older pool tables are prone to slate damage which is the most expensive component of your table (A new table will come with a good guarantee)

So if you are looking to buy cheap pool tables then take into consideration the pluses and minuses

The Adrenals, Your Glands of Survival

These bean-sized glands are located one above each kidney; they are called your ’emergency glands.’ It is adrenalin, one of their hormones, that spurs every nerve and muscle into immediate, perfect coordination when you face a crisis or a great danger. That split-second leap to safety from the path of a speeding auto; that burst of energy to save a loved one in peril-these are the kinds of superhuman reactions which adrenalin gives you. When adrenalin is poured into the bloodstream from your adrenal glands at the moment that some emergency message is telegraphed to them by your brain, your entire nervous and muscular system grows tense, prepared for instantaneous action. Your brain becomes more alert; your senses of sight and hearing become acute; your heart beats more rapidly; your breathing becomes faster; and your blood pressure rises. As an added safeguard during any emergency, adrenalin (secreted by the medulla, the pulpy inner part of the adrenal glands) sends continuous supplies of quick-burning glucose as fuel for your greatly speeded-up heart muscle. Then, after the crisis is over, the thick outer part of the adrenals, called the cortex, immediately takes command and calms down all the organs which adrenalin has excited into great bursts of superhuman activity. Healthy adrenal glands are one of the most effective beauty aids you could desire, since the color and quality of the skin is one indication of the way in which your adrenal glands are performing. A clear, rosy color usually indicates properly functioning adrenals; whereas dark, sallow skin, heavily lined, should warn you that all is not well with them.

The adrenal glands also have a lot to do with helping your hair remain young. The cortex is suspected of being the culprit when your hair starts to become gray, since the pigment which colors hair is partially formed and stored in this outer layer of the adrenal glands. Obviously, sluggish adrenals would more than likely be unable to provide enough pigment to keep your hair colored, and this ‘rationing’ of normal pigment would result in faded or gray hair.

This pair of little glands also helps neutralize any poisons that may sneak into your bloodstream-and believe me there are hundreds of them waiting to destroy you every second of your life. A disease such as blood poisoning or influenza, as well as surgical operations, places such heavy demands on the adrenal glands to ‘clean up’ the bloodstream that the glands afterwards become weary, and their hormone secretions fall far below normal. That is one reason why acute nervous symptoms or severe physical exhaustion nearly always follow a surgical operation or a serious illness. The hormone that controls your amount of pep, as well as your ability to fight off disease, is called cortin; it is secreted by the cortex (outer layer) of the adrenals. Even a mild upset of the adrenals-chances are pretty good that you’re suffering such an adrenal upset at this very moment, since it’s a common ailment in today’s world-will cause lack of pep, and what is mistaken for ‘plain laziness.’ That is, you can’t bring yourself to plunge into the round of ordinary social, domestic and business activities that face you. So beware whenever you tire too easily and seem to need more than seven or eight hours’ sleep night after night, then the chances are you may be suffering from what is called hypo-adrenia. Other common warning signs of this glandular disturbance are cold hands or feet, and low blood pressure. Along with this mistakenly called ‘physical laziness’ comes a marked mental lethargy that leaves you unable to think clearly, or to concentrate on important matters. The adrenals, particularly the cortex, are also the first glands to be damaged by malnutrition. A lot of intensive research has been done in recent years on the effect of diet on hormone production, especially the hormones secreted by the adrenals. The conclusions reached were that through proper diet it is quite possible to renew the vitality of the adrenal glands. Protein, together with vitamin C, seems to have the most beneficial effect on the adrenal glands. This is true because high-protein diets have been found to be the best measure for successfully combating hypo-adrenia-the ailment that keeps your blood pressure too low, your hands and feet like ice, and your mind and muscles about as peppy as those of a sloth.

Ostrich farming is currently conducted in over 100 countries across the world. From cold climates such as Alaska and Sweden to equatorial countries like Brazil and Indonesia, ostriches are being raised as livestock with high yields. Because of its hardy nature, virtually any area is adaptable for the ostrich. Its feathers provide great protection with their insulating abilities; keeping the bird cool in hot climates and warm in colder areas. Humidity does present a problem, not with the adults but with the chicks which are highly susceptible to diseases that can be present in those conditions.

There are several reasons why ostrich farming can be a good investment. One breeding pair of ostriches is capable of producing up to 40 chicks per year. One healthy male can breed with up to three females during the same season. Weight Loss For Women – Resistance Training Will Rev Up Fat Burning

If you really want to lose weight, burn fat and develop a lean healthy body, then in addition to proper nutrition, you really need to include resistance training as part of your weight loss program. Not only is exercise an important part of any fat burning program, the RIGHT type of exercise is also critical.

For you cardio junkies out there I’ve got some bad news. The treadmill, stair stepper, elliptical machine or that morning jog are NOT the most effective way to exercise if you want to burn fat and lose weight. I’m not saying cardio is bad, it does help and should be part of your exercise routine. But you’re really missing the boat if you exclude resistance training.

What is resistance training?

Well, it’s pretty much what is says. You do exercises using various forms of resistance. That resistance could come in the form of dumbbells, barbells, weight machines, kettle balls, resistance bands, or even water bottles or soup cans. You can even do resistance training using only your own body weight by doing pull ups, squats, lunges, push ups and so forth. You don’t need to join a gym or buy expensive weight training equipment.

What are the benefits of resistance training?

When you do these types of exercises, it increases the amount of lean muscle mass in your body. And increased lean muscle accelerates your metabolism, which in turn accelerates the rate at which your body burns fat. These muscles essentially become fat burning machines! And the great thing is this fat burning continues long after your workout is over!

When you do cardio exercises, your metabolism isn’t increased nearly as much as it is with resistance training, and with cardio your fat burning slows down shortly after you’re done working out.

In addition to the fat burning and weight loss aspect, resistance training will give your body a much leaner and fitter appearance. You will look toned and because muscle is more compact than fat, you will appear smaller, even compared to someone who is the same height and weight who has a higher body fat.

Many women have avoided strength or resistance training because they don’t want to look like a body builder. Not to fear, because anyone who has done strength training and does appear bulky and muscle bound, got that way because they’ve done very intense muscle building exercises or in some cases may have taken performance enhancing drugs. Normal resistance training will make you appear more toned and fit, but it will not make you bulky.

So, how do you go about doing this resistance training?

There are many different schools of thought when it comes to strength/resistance training. I’m going to share with you some general tips that will get you started in the right direction.

First of all, don’t do too much too fast. Ease into it and get your body used to that type of exercise. Especially if you haven’t done it before.

I recommend you do the resistance training part of your overall exercise program 3 days a week. Your muscles need time to recover and you should never work the same muscle group two days in a row.

You should start light in the beginning but once you get going don’t lift too light. You want to challenge your body so gradually work up to a weight that gives you a good workout but isn’t too strenuous. And don’t lift too heavy. That could cause an injury.

When doing the exercise, use steady gradual movements. Don’t do your reps too fast. That is only using the momentum of the weight instead of working your muscles. That’s cheating and will only defeat your efforts.

Vary your routine every few weeks. It keeps you more mentally stimulated and your muscles will also stay stimulated. If you keep the same routine with the same number of repetitions week after week, your muscles will adjust to it and your progress will slow way down. You need to keep those muscles on their toes! You’ll see continued improvement that way.

Of course, if you really want to see that fat and weight melt away, it’s important to combine your fat burning exercise program with some cardio worked in there for variety and a proper nutritional program is essential.

Losing weight and getting fit is not easy. But if you do it the proper way, you will begin to see immediate results, which of course will help motivate you to continue with your program.

This can lead to greater distance and accuracy which every golfer is looking for, I have used one of these for a few years now at home and on the driving range. I have found that it not only improved my distance and accuracy, but also gives me a great sense of the rhythm and timing needed for a smooth golf swing.

You can purchase the Izzo smooth swing for around ten dollars, this is money well spent if you are looking to improve your golf swing. I like it because it is simple to use, there is no requirement for setting up a practice station or bits of equipment. You just simply slide it on your arms and after a short period of time you can feel it encouraging you to make smooth golf swings.

Rick Smith Smash Bag

The rick smith smash bag is an ideal training aid to give you that idea of the correct impact position, this is one of my favourites for indoor work when the weather is bad. It is especially good at giving you feedback on the quality of your strike at the crucial moment in a golf swing, all you have to do is line up and swing then take a look at the angle of the proprietary target map.

If your impact position was good then the bag will stay aligned, but if you were slightly of target then the bag retains the impact to show you where your impact position was for that swing. This is an excellent training aid I have used for a while now and feel I am starting to understand really where I need to be at impact, and costing around $15 is a great investment to help you improve your golf swing.

Swingyde golf training aid

This is the only training aid that I use to keep my golf swing on plane, the swingyde is a fantastic piece of equipment. Using the swingyde is so easy and effective it can take your golf swing to the next level dramatically, the swingyde works with a clip that attaches to the shaft of your club on one end, and a built-in rest that touches your left forearm on the other.

When you swing the club with the swingyde attached the rest should touch your left forearm on the backswing, this encourages the proper wrist cock in the golf swing. This effective training aid will improve your swing plane, wrist cock, swing tempo, clubface alignment, and follow through, when you first use one of these swingydes you will think how simple it looks and how can this be effective.

I know I thought the same until I used it for a while, it greatly improved my swing plane and tempo and is so easy to use I was amazed. You can get a swingyde for around $29 today, you will notice it is well worth the money when you start to see the big improvements in your golf swing.

Nurses are absolutely essential to the healthcare industry. No hospital could function without them. Nurses provide special qualities and care that no other healthcare professional can provide.

While a doctor may see a patient for five minutes each day in the hospital, the nursing staff is in constant communication with the patient. Not only is a nurse responsible for the medical care of the patient, they often become the emotional support a patient needs to cope with disease and illness. There are many ways that you can support a patient as a nurse in a hospital setting. Your responsibilities will usually include taking vital signs, administering medication, and following up with any physician orders for the patient.

At the same time, you may also work to educate a patient in the hospital. While doctors often prescribe treatment programs, nurses are often better at explaining those programs to patients. As a teacher, you will often be the person that the patient trusts the most. You’ll explain tests and procedures before a patient undergoes them. As a nurse, you are the one that will spend the most time with a patient during a hospital stay. You’re the one who will help with eating a meal, dressing, and bathing. You’ll see a person at his or her most vulnerable state and you’ll throw out the lifeline that’s needed to make it through.

Nurses also play a role in comforting friends and family members who may be dealing with feelings of worry, fear, or even grief. As a nurse, you’ll be the person who helps to explain the situation to relatives and important people of a patient. You’ll be the one who calms their anxiety.

A hospital might be able to deliver sterile medical care with any type of medical professional, but it couldn’t provide quality care without nurses. Nurses provide qualities that no other person could deliver.

MONUMENTS

Monuments are the structures which are either created explicitly to commemorate a person or an event or which are made in previous time and has become important to remember the late people or past events. But some monuments are so whimsical and precious that they become the brightly shining star from the vast universe of beautiful structures. They are showcased as the world heritage site.

It is a saga but a very practical truth of today. These valuable gems of our country are getting endangered and if serious and bold steps are not taken for their revival, the country will be like a bride without jewelry. Though India is the treasure of temples, monuments and ancient amazing pieces of art and beauty, I’ll limelight some famous monuments marked as world heritage site.

– QUTUB MINAR- in Delhi built by Qutbuddin Aybak in 1193;

– RED FORT- in Delhi built by Shah Jahan in 1639;

– HUMAYUN’S TOMB – in Delhi built in 1570; these three are among the world heritage sites.

The other famous monuments in Delhi are:

– 22ft TALL IRON PILLAR-in the year AD 375-415;

– JAMA MASJID-India’s largest mosque built in 1655;

– PURANA QILA, JANTAR MANTAR and INDIA GATE.

Some other world heritage sites in India are:

– TAJ MAHAL-a tomb in Agra built by Shah Jahan in 1631 for his wife Mumtaz Mahal;

– FATEHPUR SIKRI-a magnificent red sandstone city in Sikri near Agra built by Mughal emperor Akbar.

– AJANTA & ELLORA CAVES-present in Maharashtra these caves were built near about 6th century. The caves depict the Buddhist and the Jataka tales.

– ELEPHANTA CAVES-present in Maharashtra these caves were also built near 6th and the 7th century has a 6-m high bust of lord Shiva.

– SONAR QILA-a fort in Rajasthan was built by Rawal Jaiswal in 1156.

– CHARMINAR-it is a square shaped monument built in Andhra Pradesh in 1591.

– SANCHI STUPAS-they are one of the oldest Stupas in Bhopal.

– BHIMBETKA-in Madhya Pradesh they are the rock shelters discovered in 1957. They have many different paintings.

– BASILICA OF BOM JESUS-present in old Goa it holds the tomb of St. Francis Xavier.

– HAMPI-present in Karnataka has many beautiful temples.

– MAMALLAPURAM-it is a group of rock-cut monuments built near 7th and 8th century in Tamil Nadu.

Monuments are getting spoiled: there is not one but many ways in which the valuable and literally non-renewable structures created originally by ancient artists of different dynasties are getting ruined.

The chemicals are released and merged in the air through motor vehicles, coal-fired power plants, nuclear waste disposal, plastic factories and other heavy industries. Even spraying of pesticides and chemicals in agricultural fields are harming the quality of air. The harmful gases released in the environment are basically oxides of Carbon, Sulphur and Nitrogen and the chloro-fluoro carbon gases. These gases are making the air polluted, increasing the global warming and even depleting the ozone layer allowing the UV-rays to enter in the earth’s atmosphere. These bad elements share hands with the other acts causing harm to our heritage. Making the matter worst the deforestation has crossed the limit of pollution. All these negative human behavior together are ruining the environment, basic life and also our very prestigious & precious world heritage sites.

The basic structure of these sites is getting weaker with the pace of time. Deep into their foundation the acids and the chemicals are penetrated which are shattering the skeleton of these whimsical creations leading to the breakdown of their both anatomy and morphology. Either the paints or the detailed intricate work are dropping down; or the luster and the lacquer on the stone are diminished or getting dull.

The chemicals merged with the air and falls on these monuments as the acid rain washing away the beauty of these great sites.

The natural glow or colors of the stones are getting black. The clear example is the Taj Mahal-it is made up of white stone called ‘Sangemarmar’. Due to the presence of dense smog in the atmosphere the ‘Taj Mahal’ is literally turning in the black beauty.

People scrub on the wall of these beautiful structures. Couples write their names and love messages on the walls, throwing garbage and spitting the chewed beetle and through many other obscene attitudes ruin the crystal clear beauty of these monuments.

The scorching heat stops the tourists to visit these places. The intense global warming, deforestation and over pollution has increases the temperature to such an extent that people doesn’t like to view these beauties with itching and sweating all through body.

The foreign tourists who enhance the value of these sites and propagate about their art and beauty are being exploited and used falsely by some bad Indian hosts. This cools down the enthusiasm of the foreigners to visit India and ultimately the economical degradation is the result. Fewer tourists, less economy and reduced revival of the monuments. If these heritages are not revived from time to time, then after few years they will permanently become the history.

The metro advancement acts as a dike. Dike prevents flood but here the metro stations construction and metro route construction are obstructing the stagnancy of these monuments. For instance the tall Qutab Minar getting distract due to the passing route of metro.

But it’s never too late. Let’s join our hands together and put our step forward for the revival mission of the Indian Gems- OUR MONUMENTS:

“The conservation and preservation of these monuments cannot be neglected further”…. Well written and shared by C.B.S.E ‘Siksha Sadan’ to all heads of C.B.S.E affiliated schools on 7th Jan’10.

The cultural ministry showed their courtesy by supporting the subject and lectures in the schools for students to understand and respect their world heritage site.

The books are not the only solution. As always said “action speaks louder than words”, the students should be frequently taken on a trip to these very special monuments. With the proper guidance their knowledge about the ancient monuments should be enhanced. Quiz must be arranged on the basis of world heritage sites and other monuments. Prizes awarded to the winners will encourage the pupils to avail the thorough information of their heritage. The students should be explained the reasons for the protection and the revival of these sites.

The generation availing the fields like civil construction, paints, interior & exterior decoration and designing should be guided to promote their wide creative knowledge in the revival of monuments.

The former and the common style of reviving these world heritage sites and monuments is converting them totally or their particular part(s) in museum, library, tourist place or hotel. One famous example is ‘Chauki Dhani’ in Jaipur. By setting up museums or libraries in these prehistoric beauties, the visitors will get the interesting and the elaborate knowledge of these sites. By converting them in hotels or tourist places, the government will get the foreign revenue and the motive to rehabilitate these ancient creativities.
