Hepatitis C, Piercings, and Tattoos

Expressing oneself can be a valid part of the maturation process. Not only do teens need to find ways to let the world know who and what they are, but as an adult searching for ways to show how you feel is important as well. There are numerous ways to do this self-expression, some write or draw.

Others feel tattoos and body piercing are a viable method of self-expression. Piercing has certainly changed in the last twenty years, a time when it was only common for a woman to have her ears pierced. Nowadays piercing just about any place on your body, once or many times, is not uncommon, and instead of having a woman's ears pierced with one hole in each ear, women, and men, may have multiple piercings on a single ear.

In the not so distant past, tattoos were something only the rough crowd had. Ex-cons showed off their prison tattoos with pride. But now anyone you pass on the street could have a tattoo. From a simple tiny rose on a spot always hidden beneath a woman's clothing, to armbands, full sleeves or on some people, most of their bodies, you will see it all.

Whether you're talking about tattoos or body piercings, there is one thing they have in common other than self-expression. That is that they put you at higher risk of contracting the Hepatitis C virus. It is how they are done that really makes the difference between risk levels. For example, it's not a good idea to do them on your own or have a friend do them.

Prisons are probably one of the worst situations in which a tattoo or piercing can be done. That is because the Hepatitis C virus is spread by the passing of blood to blood and if the needles used for piercing or tattooing have been used before, and remain unsterile, they can pass this very infectious disease. In fact, the incidence of Hepatitis C virus infection in prisons in general is higher than the general population.

If you want a tattoo or body piercing, pick a reputable shop that looks clean, and check them out before you get the work done. Make sure that they use sterile needles from an unopened package.

You will also want the tattoo artist or piercer to wear gloves while they are working on you. This is just added protection for fear that they have open cuts that could spread any disease. When getting a tattoo you will also want clean inkpots to be used. Anything that can be done to protect you from the risk of the Hepatitis C infection is more than worth your while.

Bleeding Ulcer, or What can Happen if You Don’t Treat a Simple Ulcer

Ulcer is a disease that unfortunately makes more and more victims each year, because modern lifestyle helps this disease to appear and advance. Ulcer is caused by a bacteria called Heliobacter Pylori, which billions of people are carrying. If a person that carries this bacteria lives a stressful life and eats a lot of spicy food (factors that help the bacteria quickly evolve) then he/she will most likely suffer from one of the many forms of ulcer. Ulcer occurs because this bacteria slowly eats the protective membrane around the lining of the stomach and exposes the sensitive tissue beneath it to the dangerous gastric acids inside the stomach. Therefore, ulcer causes an open wound in the stomach, esophagus or duodenum.

If someone has discovered that he or she is suffering from ulcer then the treatment must start as soon as possible because if the disease is left untreated severe complications can appear. The treatment is simple, the patient is prescribed a series of medication depending on the type of ulcer and how advanced it is.

But what happens if a person is not aware that ulcer is affecting him/her or if he/she simply leaves the disease untreated? Well an untreated ulcer can turn into a much worse form of ulcer – bleeding ulcer. It’s called bleeding ulcer because loss of blood occurs due to the fact that H pylori keeps eating the tissue until it reaches the blood vessels and blood starts to enter the digestive track.

Someone that has bleeding ulcer will start vomiting blood, have black, loose stools, will start to experience pain in the abdominal area and indigestions will often follow a meal. In extreme cases, if nothing is done about the ulcer it will eventually lead to death, so bleeding ulcer must be treated immediately after it’s discovered or its consequences will be felt in the entire body. Bleeding ulcer is treated through surgery in most cases, but surgery is not required if the illness is detected early. It is hoped that in the near future ulcer and bleeding ulcer treatment will be much easier because new medical tehniquies are researched intensively every day, since this disease affects more and more people and the situation is becoming alarming.

In conclusion, if you suspect that you have ulcer or bleeding ulcer pay a visit to the local doctor and ask for his advice as soon as you can, because in the early stages both ulcer and bleeding ulcer are treated with just a few pills, which is of course much better that going through surgery and suffering life-threatening complications.

Lymphedema Products

Managing lymphedema can be quite difficult but combination therapy of manual lymph drainage followed by bandaging and using compression garments has yielded positive results. Skin care and exercise also play a major role in the treatment of lymphedema. In order to conduct this therapy, various lymphedema products are used to aid the process. Some of the products are compression bandages, compression garments, foams and footwear, accessories like hooks, fasteners, donning aids, padding, compression devices and pumps. In the first step of treatment, manual lymph drainage is performed followed by bandaging and daily use of compression garments with regular skin care.

Patients with lymphedema have to wear compression garments after decongestive therapy so that the reduction of the swelling is maintained. These compression garments can either be custom-made or purchased from a store. Compression sleeves, gloves, gauntlets and bras are some of the lymphedema products used for the upper region of the body. For the lower extremities, knee-high or high-high stockings, compression panty hose and other compression devices are available. It is important to consult the doctor while selecting a compression garment so that it is suitable for the patient's condition. The compression garments need to be replaced periodically as they lose their efficiency with constant use.

Bandaging the affected limb helps to keep the swelling in check. In case of lymphedema patients, bandages are essential to exert a resistance on the skin so that the muscle tissue can easily absorb the fluids and reduce water retention. Even throughout the daily activities or exercises, it is advised to bandage the limit so that the lymphatic flow is encrypted. Short stretch bandages are ideal because they promote circulation of the lymph fluids, thus preventing swelling. A variety of lymphedema products are available for bandaging-tubular stockinetes, bandages for fingers and toes, adhesive bandages and tapes can be purchased according to the individual needs.

An item that plays a major part in the lymphmedema treatment process is the pump. The Sequential Gradient Pump and FlexiTouch Pump are two varieties of pumps commonly used for decongestive therapy. These prove to be greatly useful to people who have no access to a massage therapist who can help them with the decongestive therapy. Lymphedema pumps can either be bought or rented out from medical stores. Other lymphedema products include items used for skin care and cleansing. Gels, oils, lubricating and moisturizing creams are utilized by patients for their skincare routine.

Lymphedema patients must follow a life-long treatment for the condition. Newer products coming on the market are being used by therapists to take care of problem issues like swapping and fibrotic tissues. Elastic Therapeutic Tape is one such product which is used to soften edemas. Certain accessories akin to bandage rollers, donning or doffing aids or even special footwear aim to make life a little easier for the lymphedema patient. Online shopping is a convenience of the modern age and patients can easily procure lymphedema products to suit their individual requirements. Some of these stores have trained personnel to help the patient select the right product.

Missed Diagnosed Heart Attacks Can Be Deadly

A missed heart attack diagnosis results in the highest medical malpractice payout all all medical malpractice cases. Every year in the United States, 7 million people go to hospital emergency rooms complaining of chest pain or other symptoms that suggest they might be having a heart attack.

When patients enter a hospital or an emergency room, doctors have a professional obligation to perform all the routine tests that will either diagnose heart disease or rule it out. When profit is put ahead of patient care, doctors may not take the required time to do their jobs thoroughly and effectively.

The statistics surrounding heart disease and heart attacks in the US are startingling. A heart attack occurs about every 20 seconds, and deaths from heart attacks occur approximately once a minute. Almost 14 million Americans have a history of heart attack or angina (chest pain or discomfort that occurs when your heart muscle does not get enough blood).

Warning signs of a heart attack include:

· Shortness of breath, often occurring at the same time as chest pain but can occur before chest pain, also

· Chest discomfort / pain (squeezing, pressure, or fullness)

· Discomfort in other areas of the upper body (one or both arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach)

· Cold sweat, nausea, light-headedness

More than 233,000 women die each year from heart disease; yet, most women do not experience chest pain when having a heart attack. Instead, they frequently experience nausea and vomiting, which often leads doctors to misdiagnose a woman's heart attack as a gastro-intestinal problem. According to recent studies, women waited an average of almost 25 minutes longer than men for clot-buster treatments, which can stop a heart attack. Misdiagnosing a heart attack or a heart condition puts the patient, female or male, at risk for stroke, paralysis and death.

Acute cardiac ischemia (ACI) is a deficiency in the blood supply to the heart muscle. ACI includes heart attack and unstable angina; These conditions are among the most difficult to diagnose for even experienced doctors. Because these conditions go undiagnosed, patients are often discharged from the hospital when they should be admitted for further testing and treatment. Patients not admitted to the hospital are twice as likely to die than patients properly diagnosed, admitted and treated.

The Effects Of Alcohol Consumption On Cholesterol

There is good news when it comes to moderate alcohol consumption and its effects on your cholesterol levels.

According to most research studies, a moderate alcohol intake (one or two drinks maximum of alcohol per day) is associated with less risk of heart disease. This applies to all forms of alcohol and not simply to red wine, as is often believed and is due to the fact that all types of alcohol reduce the level of LDL (bad) cholesterol in the blood. Alcohol also raises the HDL (good) cholesterol, which could play a role in protecting against heart disease.

One research paper even goes as far to say that any amount of alcohol consumption is good for improving your cholesterol. This paper survey 4860 middle-aged men in Caerphilly (South Wales) and Speedwell (Bristol) and found that alcohol consumption was directly related to increased levels of HDL cholesterol. The research also showed that the alcohol you drank the more "good" HDL cholesterol increased – regardless of age, smoking habits, body weight, "bad" cholesterol or other levels of fats in the blood.

But (unfortunately), this paper is a lone voice in the research on alcohol and cholesterol and I would not hold too much faith in its results!

This is because it was based on surveys and the majority of people tend to exaggerate, under estimate or are really mistaken about their own health habits when it comes to someone "official looking" standing in front of them with a clip board (or it may just be me that fibs when it comes to surveys!). The majority of papers show that too much alcohol can raise blood pressure, damage the liver, cause strokes, enlarge the heart, cause arrhythmias and start having an adverse effect on overall cholesterol (and health).

Fortunately, the old adage of "a little of what you fancy does you good" still holds true for alcohol and if you stick to 2-3 drinks 2-3 times a week you will not go far wrong!

What You Must Know About the Pneumococcal Vaccine

The CDC, hospitals and doctor’s offices around the country are intent on pushing the pneumococcal vaccine as a safe and effective way to reduce the burden of pneumonia on society. It’s touted as being especially important for the elderly population to get this vaccine, as they are not only more prone to GET pneumonia, but more prone to dying from it or becoming critically ill.

Pneumococcal pneumonia is also one of the main complications of flu infection. People RARELY die of the flu itself, but most often die of COMPLICATIONS from the flu. And they most often die of pneumonia. So, naturally, it would be a great idea to get the widely available vaccine in order to prevent pneumonia, right?

But a new study says it “does not appear to actually be effective in preventing pneumonia”.

Not effective in preventing pneumonia?!

Importantly, this study was done as a “metanalysis”. A metanalysis is a study that is done to look at all of the studies that have been done on the subject in order to get a “big picture” view of the results of all the studies combined. This is very important because individual studies may be biased, be very small or have other problems. A metanalysis takes all this into account. They dismiss studies that have major flaws and generally only look at high quality studies.

In this case 21 studies were examined with a total of over 100,000 test subjects. And the conclusion was that the pneumococcal vaccine doesn’t work. Yet hospitals across the country spend millions of dollars unnecessarily in order to follow the regulations issued by the CDC that push these vaccines that contain “preservatives” like mercury, formaldehyde and coal tar.

Along with the equally questionable flu vaccine, hundreds of thousands of people- particularly the elderly -are pushed to get large amounts of these “preservatives” injected into their bodies for the sake of the virtually nonexistent benefit of reducing their incidence of disease!

Dealing With Pain Caused by Bunions

There are many people who complain about the pain in their feet due to bunions. At times, people who suffer from this problem find it difficult to walk. One of the most important causes of this problem is wearing ill-fitting shoes.

Today, one of the most common problems that women suffer from is bunions. The problem can make walking both difficult and painful. At times, the swapping in your toes becomes so large that you may not find shoes to fit over them. Also, many experts are of the view that bunion can increase the chances of osteoarthritis in your joints.

Before we go into details of how to deal with pain caused by bunions, it is important that you know what you are dealing with. This problem causes painful enlargement of the tissues that are at the base of the big toe. This enlargement of the toe causes discomfort when you walk or wear shoes. At times, if the problem is left untreated, it can cause dislocation of the bone that is at the base of the toe.

Most people prefer wearing designer shoes even if they are not comfortable wearing these shoes. When you wear narrow or high-heeled shoes, there is little space for the joints to move which increases the pressure and friction on these joints. When you wear ill-fitting shoes for a prolonged duration, the pressure on your big toe causes irritation which can stimulate the growth of involved tissues. If the irritation continues, the deformity increases and may even cause dislocation of the big toe from the analogous bone of your feet.

This problem can be reversed if right steps are taken. If you do not take care of your toes when the problem first appears, it can cause irreversible damage to your big toe. When the problem first appears, you must start wearing comfortable shoes and discard all your ill-fitting shoes. Wear shoes that do not obstruct the normal straight position of your toes. If possible, try to wear pads between your toes as it will in reducing irritation and swelling. Walking barefoot will also help as it will reduce the pressure on your joints and abate inflammation of your big toe. You can also use bunion splits and regulator to deal with this problem.

If these steps do not help, an orthopedic surgery may be required to deal with this problem. Surgery will help in realigning your joints and removing the protrusion in your big toe. Opt for surgery if there are no other alternatives available as they can make your tissues more sensitive and tender.

Bone Cancer Survival Rate – Dare To Know Your Chances

A bone cancer survival rate refers to the percentage of people who were reported still living after being diagnosed with the cancer about 5 yrs ago.

In reality, this type of cancer is very rare. In fact, it's so rare than it only consists of about 1% all all tumor cases. Bone tumors, unlike most other types of cancer tumors, are not all fatal or cancerous. Benign tumors are even more prevalent than malignant tumors, which may be a much more relieving news for many. Often times, cancer of the bone may also be a result of the metastasis of a cancer from another part of the body.

Primary bone cancer, which begins in the bone itself and not a result of other cancer's metastasis is quite rare and only constituents less than one percent of all malignancies. This type of bone cancer is more common among men and even more in children or adolescents.

Cancer symptoms may depend upon different factors and the progress is not exactly as fast as some other cancers. Some of these factors are the location, the size and the type of tumor. Most common signs and symptoms of bone cancer are pain in bones and joints, problems with movement, inflammation of the bones and joints of affected part and easy susceptibility to developing fractures. Occidentally, the patient may also experience fever, fatigue, sweating and unexplained weight loss.

Remember this is very rare so if you have any of these symptoms, this is likely to be caused by another condition. It may work better if you always go to your doctor for proper diagnosis.

Since the development of modern chemotherapy, the patient prognosis has been improving quite significantly in many countries. However, the recovery period will always depend upon the real status of the cancer and the patient him / herself including whether the cancer has spread, the type of cancer, tumor size, location, general health of the individual and other individual factors.

If the tumor is very small and localized, the bone cancer survival rate at five years is about 90%. If the cancer has begun to spread, however, the rate of survival becomes poorer.

Overall, the bone cancer survival rate at five years is only 60 percent, and once the cancer reaches its metastasis stage, you can expect the prognosis to become worse.

The bone cancer survival rate listed below is based upon the type of bone cancers:
• Osteosarcoma – 84% at the early stages and 69% at the later stage.
• Ewing's Sarcoma – 3 year survival rate is around 65%.
• Chondrosarcoma – 5 year survival rate is around 30%.

Definition of Bell's Palsy

Symptoms of Bell's Palsy

The symptoms of Bell's Palsy tend to progress very quickly. The symptoms are often not recognizable at first but will develop over a period of a few days. The warning signs are usually neck pain, pain behind the ear or pain in the back of the head.

– Paralysis of the facial muscles
– Facial weakness
– Drooping or sagging mouth
– Drooling
– Facial pain or twitching
– Loss of taste
– Inability to close the eye, teething or dry eyes
– Dizziness
– Dry mouth
– Hypersensitivity to sound
– Impaired speaking

Help for Bell's Palsy

In mild cases of Bell's Palsy, treatment is not actually required, and the nerve will heal by itself in due course. However, more severe cases of this condition require treatment. Various types of treatments such as conventional medicine, complementary and natural therapy may be effective if incorporated into a broader treatment plan.

Using Conventional Medicines for Treatment

– Anti-viral drugs (such as acyclovir) may treat the herpes viruses if this is one of the suspected causes of Bell's Palsy and facial nerve damage Egypt

– Corticosteroids, such as prednisone, are used to reduce swelling and
inflammation of the facial nerve and prevent any possible or further facial
nerve damage.

– A Vitamin B12 injection can protect the nerves and reduce nerve
infection ensuring better nerve health.

– Botulinum toxin (Botox) can be injected into the upper eyelid to protect the eye and also to reduce facial spasm.

– If facial nerve damage occurs, surgical treatments such as facial nerve
repair, nerve substitution and muscle transposition may be needed if the
condition does not improve or remit, in order to reduce distortion of the
facial features and restore nerve health.

– A surgical procedure called tarsorrhaphy may improve eyelid closure.

– Plastic surgery may be performed to improve permanent facial drooping.

Tips for Managing Bell's Palsy

– Eating a healthy and balanced diet rich in leafy, green vegetables

– Exercising regularly

– Practice facial massage and facial exercises several times a day

REM Sleep Paralysis Explained – Read This and Change Your Life Forever

REM is the period of sleep that is associated with dreaming. REM sleep paralysis is a condition that occurs when sleep is suddenly interrupted and the person was having a dream. The paralysis sets in because the transition from being totally sleep to being fully awake is a gradual process. When it becomes sudden the body and the brain's reaction times are not the same and this causes the paralysis.

Why does it occur when you are having dreams? This is simply because dreams are not real and you should not be reacting to them. When the brain is immediately awaken in the middle of a dream you are actually trying to physically respond to something that is not there and the body goes into a state of paralysis. Can you imagine what would happen if we reacted to everything that happened while we are asleep?

So you can clearly see that anything that will interrupt the normal sleep pattern of an individual will likely cause it. There are some stimuli that the brain responds to when you are sleep. The brain does respond to light and sound. So usually sleeping in a dark and quiet room should less the occurrence of REM sleep paralysis.

There are also some things that are known to precipitate this condition. I'm referring to things like alcohol, smoking and caffeine when taken at night or before sleeping. Try and avoid tension and putting yourself under a lot of stress.

REM sleep paralysis is an acknowledged medical condition and you should not feel ashamed or embarrassed to get help for it. There are many other remedies to this problem; you are welcome to further research as information is freely available on the net.

Post-Herpetic Neuralgia – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Herpes Zoster or shingles is a painful rash on the skin and is caused by a reactivation of the chickenpox virus, which remains dormant in nerve cells for years. The rash usually subsides within a month, however, in some affected individuals – usually the elderly – the resulting nerve damage causes severe pain, which may last for months or even years. This pain is termed as post-herpetic neuralgia.

The Ayurvedic treatment of post-herpetic neuralgia is aimed at treating the nerve damage, controlling pain, and boosting the immune status of the body so as to prevent the virus from reactivating. Nerve damage can be treated using medicines like Maha-Vat-Vidhvans, Vat-Gajankush-Ras, Bruhat-Vat-Chintamani, Tapyadi-Loh, Ekang-Veer-Ras, Trayo-Dashang-Guggulu, Kaishor-Guggulu, Abhrak-Bhasma, Trivang-Bhasma, Aswagandhadi-Churna, Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Yashtimadhuk (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Mandukparni (Centella asiatica), and Haridra (Curcuma longa).

Pain can be controlled using medicines like Vat-Gajankush-Ras, Maha-Vat-Vidhvans-Ras, Agnitundi-Ras, Vishtinduk-Vati, Maha-Rasnadi-Guggulu, Triphala-Guggulu, Dashmoolarishta, Dashmool-Ghan-Vati, Rasna (Pluchea lanceolata), Dashmool (Ten Roots), Nirgundi (Vitex negundo), Ashwagandha, Sarpagandha (Raulwofia serpentina), Tagar (Valeriana vallichii), Jayphal (Myristica fragrans) and Khurasani ova (Hyoscyamus niger).

A combination of local applications like Vishgarbha-Oil, Maha-Narayan-Oil, Maha-Mash-Oil and Maha-Saindhavadi-Oil can be used both to control the pain and to treat nerve damage. Kumari (Aloe vera), Yashtimadhuk, Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus) and Chandan (Santalum album) can also be mixed with Shata-Dhout-Ghrut and used as a soothing ointment.

Immunomodulatory medicines like Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Bhrungraj (Eclipta alba), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Punarnava(Boerhaavia diffusa) and Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa) can be used to empower the immune system of the body and help to deactivate the herpes virus. Antiviral medicines like Bhumiamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri), Yashtimadhuk, Daruharidra (Berberis aristata) and Amalaki (Emblica officinalis ) can also be used for this purpose.

Prompt diagnosis and aggressive treatment of shingles usually helps to prevent complications like post-herpetic neuralgia. The pain experienced in this condition can be prolonged and severe enough to make strong, healthy adults break down and cry. Ayurvedic herbal medicines have proved to be quite effective in controlling and treating this condition. Treatment for post-herpetic neuralgia is usually required for nine to twelve months.

Diabetes Mellitus – A Cardiovascular Disease

"Life is not over because you have diabetes. Dale Evans Rogers (American Singer known as the "Queen of the West"),

Glucose, a form of sugar, is the body's main source of fuel. Glucose needs insulin to enter the cells to be used as energy. Insulin is produced by a large gland located behind the stomach – the pancreas. In diabetes, either the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the cells in the muscles, liver, and fat do not use insulin properly, or both. This allows sugar to accumulate in the blood while the cells are starved. These metabolic abnormalities lead to vascular inflammation. People with diabetes are at a much higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases like heart attack, stroke, peripheral artery disease and heart failure.

The incidence of diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions. Worldwide, it is estimated that the prevalence of diabetes will rise from 2.8% (171 million people) in 2000 to 4.4% (366 million people) in 2030. Elevated blood glucose levels are responsible for 21% of deaths from coronary heart disease and 13 % of deaths from stroke. This translates into 3.16 million deaths a year. Diabetes is also a major problem in the United States.

Many clinical trials have established that cardiovascular diseases are the most common and most serious complications in diabetics. Almost 65% patients with diabetes die of heart attack or a stroke. Dr. Garcia and his co-researchers reported in Diabetes in 1974, using data from the Framingham Study, that patients with diabetes have a two-three-fold increased incidence of cardiovascular disease and those who present in the fourth and fifth decades of life have a two- fold increase in mortality. This cardiovascular risk develops even before diabetes becomes clinically apprehensive. Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston found that women who historically developed type 2 diabetes had a risk of heart attack almost 4 times higher than those who never developed the disease. This data from the Nurses Health Study, was published in the July 2002 issue of Diabetes Care.

The cause of the increased risk of macro-vascular cardiac disease is multi-factorial. Eighty percent of patients with type 2 diabetes are either obese or overweight. Diabetics also carry an abnormal lipid profile. Diabetics typically have elevated plasma triglycerides, normal or mildly elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and reduced plasma HDL-C concentrations. This encourages atherosclerosis. The combination of high blood sugar and high insulin levels are also toxic to the cardiovascular system. Further, more than two thirds of the adults with diabetes suffer from high blood pressure, another major risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

"What was so upsetting was I did not really know anything about diabetes except that Ella Fitzgerald lost her legs and later died from it." Della Reese. Diabetics also causes many micro-vascular complications. These include diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy and diabetic neuropathy. Despite good long-term sugar and blood pressure control, diabetes remains a major cause of blindness, renal failure and amputations. Two landmark studies, the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1993 and the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study Group (UKPDS) study published in the British Medical Journal in 1998, have shown that an intense control of blood glucose levels and tight blood pressure control reduce the risk of these micro vascular complications in diabetics.

An earlier report from the UKPDS Study published in the British Medical Journal in 1996, shown that increasing age, poor sugar control, increased systolic blood pressure, raised bad LDL-cholesterol, reduced good HDL-cholesterol levels and smoking were significant risk factors for coronary heart disease in diabetics. Lifestyle interventions reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and include eating healthy, staying active, drinking alcohol in moderation, stopping the use of tobacco products and maintaining a healthy body weight. They have been shown to prevent the development of diabetes by almost 58%. In patients who have impaired glucose tolerance, they can delay diabetes by almost 11 years. These beneficial effects of lifestyle interventions were also demonstrated in the Diabetes Prevention Program Research Group report published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2002.

"Diabetes is like being expected to play the piano with one hand while juggling items with another hand, all while balancing with deftness and dexterity on a tightrope" – Marlene Less, Scott's Diabetes Journal. Treating diabetes and controlling your sugar may be difficult. This is because blood sugar levels ideally should be continuously maintained within a small normal range. This may require frequent medications or injections and careful monitoring of the sugar levels. Recent data suggests that the traditionally used blood sugar lowering medications may also have a dark side. In 2002, Duke researchers presented data at the 51st Annual Scientific Sessions of the American Heart Association which showed that there was a 2.6-fold increased risk of death for patients taking injected insulin and sulfonylurea drugs, compared with insulin-sensitizing therapies, such as metformin . They also found that at 90 days into the trials, 12% of diabetic patients on insulin-providing therapy had a major adverse event, compared with 5% of diabetic patients on insulin-sensitizing therapy. Treating diabetes is therefore just not limited to reducing blood glucose levels. Several metabolic abnormalities including elevated insulin levels, inflammation and lipids have to be taken into account. Most diabetics are now also placed on a class of high blood pressure pills called ace inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers, cholesterol lower statins and the household aspirin. Recent trials (especially the ASCOTT-LLA study, published in Lancet in 2003) have shown that even in the absence of a history of coronary heart disease or high cholesterol, statin therapy is beneficial in diabetes. The American Diabetic Association advocates the use of aspirin in diabetics with an additional risk factor. Diabetics share a common vascular inflammation seen in patients with cardiovascular disease and aspirin appears to be beneficial in decreasing cardiovascular mortality. Ace inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers appear to have a better cardiovascular disease effect in diabetics that goes beyond the benefit achieved by their reduction in blood pressure. The blood pressures goals are lower in diabetics and you are better protected if the blood pressure is reduced to 120/80 mm / Hg or less.

"I lay in the bed at the hospital and said, 'let's see what I have left.' And I could see, I could speak, I could think, I could read. I simply tabulated my blessings, and that wave me a start. " Dale Evans Rogers, American Singer. Many diabetics may feel this way, but recent understanding of the disease and the cardiovascular connection has made complications easier to delay or avoid. And lifestyle changes can even prevent or delay the development of diabetes. Jill Johnson said, "" Living a healthy lifestyle will only deprive you of poor health, lethargy, and fat. "And I may add, diabetes and heart disease.
