Migraine Headaches Can Be Understood In A Different Way – Check Out Ayurveda

Migraine is a French word derived from the Latin word hemicrania, which means “pain in half of the head.” Ayurveda have unique dosha principles to understand migraines. Unlike a tension headache this type of headache does usually affect only one side of the head, bringing severe throbbing pain. Migraines consist of two phases. In phase one the blood vessels constrict and the brain receives less blood, leading to an early warning sign called an aura. Most often the aura consists of visual disturbances such as visions of light, bright or geometric shapes and lines, and tunnel vision.Other auras include sensations of a strange taste or odor, tingling, dizziness, slurred speech, ringing in the ears, and weakness in a part of the body. This phase may also include nausea, vomiting, chills, and extreme fatigue. As the next phase occurs, the blood vessels open abnormally wide, which stimulates the nerves in the blood vessel walls. The pain begins and is usually accompanied by extreme fatigue. A migraine may last for hours or days and most often affects women.

Such headaches tend to run in families. Ayurveda teaches migraine may be triggered by hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to foods; if you have persistent migraine headaches, allergies are an important consideration. Also at play may be alcohol, bright lights, loud noises, hormonal fluctuations such as occur with the menstrual cycle, and some drugs. As is the case with tension headaches, Ayurveda teaches migraines and their treatment differ from dosha to dosha:

  • Ayurveda Vata migraine headache: This headache starts on the left side and is associated with other common vata disorders, such as insomnia, constipation, and flatulence. It occurs during the vata time of day (two to six P.M. and two to six A.M.) and is aggravated by vata-aggravating foods: bitter, pungent, astringent, thy, hot, and spicy.
  • Ayurveda Pitta migraine headache: This type starts on the right side and is associated with pitta disorders such as heartburn, sensitivity to light, and digestive upset. It usually occurs in the middle of the night, worsens during the pitta time of day (ten A.M. to two P.M. and ten P.M. to two A.M.) and improves at night.
  • Ayurveda Kapha migraine headache: This headache is usually caused by ama in the form of mucus and is therefore described as sinus headache. Your migraine is of this type if, when you bend over from the waist, the headache feels worse.

Migraine headache can be so severe that home care measures (and most conventional medicines) don’t offer much help. Ayurvedic remedies prescribed by a professional are the best source of relief and prevention. However, following the Daily Lifestyle Regimen to balance your doshas may help minimize migraines.

  • Biofeedback teaches you how to warm your hands by increasing the blood flow to them. This appears to be effective in relieving migraine headaches for some people.
  • Try to discover what foods might trigger your migraine-several foods have been implicated, including chocolate, nuts, coffee, cheese, citrus fruits, and alcohol. Vata headache is frequently caused by indigestible food combinations, in particular combining milk with yogurt, bananas, or fish.
  • Understand A Very Unique Ayurveda Principle. Repression of natural urges and emotions is one of the most common causes of toxic accumulation and disease. This is especially relevant for migraine because a type of nervous tissue called majja produces tears as a waste product. It is extremely important therefore that you explore any emotions you feel may be trapped inside you.

HERBAL REMEDIES Start with the tri-doshic remedy (for all doshas), and if that is not effective, use one of the remedies for specific doshas.

  • For all doshas: Combine 2 parts brahmi (gotu kola) with 4 parts of either ashwaghanda (Withania somnifera) or shatavari (Asparagus racemosus); take 1/8 teaspoon of this mixture in 1/2 cup boiled milk or water. You may also combine 1 teaspoon vacha (calamus) with enough warm water to make a thick paste and apply to the forehead until the headache is relieved. You may also cut onions to stimulate crying; tears release toxic accumulations in your eyes, sinuses, and brain.
  • For Ayurveda vata and kapha: Combine 1 teaspoon cinnamon with enough ghee to make a paste and apply to forehead until the headache is relieved.
  • For Ayurveda vata and pitta: At onset of symptoms, take one ripe banana blended with 2 cardamom seeds and 1 teaspoon ghee. Repeat, if necessary, every 8 hours.

  • Taste: Vata and pitta types should emphasize sweet and bitter tastes, while kapha types benefit from pungent taste at this time.
  • Smell: Use the aromatherapy tailored to your dosha; for example vata types do well with sweet, warm aromas; pittas with sweet, cool aromas; and kaphas are helped by spicy, warm aromas.
  • Sight: Use yellow-green color therapy for vata; blue for pitta; and red for kapha.
  • Hearing: Listen to ragas during the appropriate hours of the day, depending on your dosha: Vata should listen to the noon or late-afternoon ragas; pitta to the midmorning raga; and kapha to the sunset raga.
  • Touch: massage the head, scalp, ears with sesame oil.

Isometrics – Serious Muscle Training Without Weights

Isometrics – super fast way to increase muscle size & strength without using weights.

Isometrics is perhaps the most under utilized and under rated method of exercise. It is perhaps the best method of strength training to be used in rehabilitation and can produce increases in strength and size where traditional, weight bearing, exercise regimes have failed. Isometric contraction, normally just called ISOMETRICS,is one in which the muscle is activated, but instead of being allowed to lengthen or shorten, it is held at a constant length. This isometrics muscle contraction is not done through a range of movements but in a static position. Isometrics is based on the principles of creating muscular tension while opposing the force of an immovable object or gravity. Isometrics are done with high levels of intensity (70-100%) rather than repetitious movements typically for a period of 7-12 seconds. Once the muscle is relaxed after the contraction increases blood flow to the muscles occurs which equals more nutrition and energy uptake which in turn increases the muscle mass (size). Isometric exercise is a form of resistance training in which the participant uses the muscles of the body to exert a force either against an immovable object or to hold the muscle in a fixed position for a set duration of time. In this type of exercise, the muscle is contracted but does not change length during the exertion of force. Additionally the joint most closely associated with the effort remains static throughout the exercise.

Isometric training has been around for centuries in such things as yoga and Chinese martial arts. Even Pilates utilizes isometric exercise as part of its training protocol. Isometrics is probably one of the very few exercise techniques that has been scientifically validated.

At the Max Plank Institute in the 1950’s Dr. Hettinger and Dr. Mueller conducted scientific research into the field of isometrics. Their study showed conclusively that isometrics can increase strength by as much as 300% in less than 30 days!

Isometric Workouts were originally made famous by Charles Atlas – although he branded it as “Dynamic Tension” and in recent years isometric workouts have made a huge comeback especially in the field of rehabilitation therapy. Several devices that use isometrics as the basis of the exercise protocol have been developed by Gert F Koebel including the Bullworker.

Isometric contraction refers to the case of strength training, in which the muscles contract, but do not change their length. The name isometric comes from the words ‘iso’ meaning equal and ‘metric’ meaning distance. In contrary to other dynamic muscle contractions that involve change in position, isometric contraction is performed in a static position. Physical activities based on isometric muscle contraction are known isometric exercises. Sometimes weight lifters and professional bodybuilders will incorporate some isometrics into their workouts, often in order to break through barriers and to attain new levels of muscle strength which in turn leads to new and increased muscle mass.

Advantages of Isometric Contraction Exercises

Isometric exercises can be carried out virtually anywhere! You can do them whilst sitting watching TV, while sunbathing, while you wait in a traffic jam and well the list goes on and on. Everyday, we could if we want indulge in performing isometric contractions as a part of our day-to-day activities, such as carrying a suitcase or a carrier bag full of groceries. Isometrics are particularly beneficial with those with back pain as the muscles can be developed without further damaging the back and the resultant gains in (say) abdominal strength help to alleviate the stress on your back which in turn helps the back to heal as your stronger abs take the strain away from your injured back.

Often the main advantages are seen as maximal muscular contraction in a short space of time. I use isometric training with many of my corporate clients who simply do not have the time to go to the gym.Isometric contraction exercises lasting for 7 – 10 seconds at a time are sufficient to activate a group of muscles. When the resistance or weight is increased gradually, your muscle will become more stronger. However if you are looking to build large muscles rather than simply “tone” then you need to use some more extreme methods of isometric training which whilst being highly intense can deliver results which can rival those attained by people taking chemical steroids, especially if conducted whilst undergoing a planned supplementation regime using products such as Aminotaur which has been shown to naturally enhance muscle growth while you sleep.

Isometrics key advantage is that it can be performed without any specialised equipment. However if you want results faster and also you want to seriously increase your lean muscle mass then you can incorporate the basis of this with any strength training device ranging from chest expanders through to dumbbells and barbells.

This type of training though is intense in nature if done correctly, therefore if you have high blood pressure or any sort of heart condition then consult your Doctor before training. If your doctor has any questions as this type of training is when done correctly can have numerous additional benefits, then tell him to contact us and we will gladly pass on any information that might help.

Benefits of Isometric Exercises.

Isometric exercises can be done without any kind of machines or equipment anytime, anywhere. If you have 10 seconds, you can work a muscle group without no one even noticing you are using isometric training. The convenience and time saving is one reason why isometrics are so popular and becoming even more popular as peoples lives get increasingly busy. Doing isometric exercises 7-10 seconds at a time during the day can substitute your workout -if done correctly. A bold claim? Yes it is but I feel confident in saying this.

The simplest way to demonstrate this is by pressing your palms together as hard as you can, and holding the tension, will work your arms, shoulders and chest. To work your neck and upper back muscles, cross your fingers behind your head, push your head back in your hands using your neck muscles while trying to push your head forward with your hands.

Find a wall to push up against or something you can pull against that won’t move like a door jam. The only thing you need to remember is to use as much force as possible for 10 seconds. Using maximum force will give you all the benefits an isometric workout has to offer. Some proponents say to use 80% of your maximum – but how do you measure 80% and with my own studies I have never seen anyone hurt themselves using isometrics.

If you have high blood pressure you should not engage in this type of activity because isometric exercises cause a spike in blood pressure. Although the blood pressure typically returns to normal rather quickly once the muscle is relaxed, the spike in blood pressure can be dangerous to those who already suffer from elevated blood pressure. If you suffer from high blood pressure but you really want to engage in isometric exercises, please consult with your doctor for tips on how to lower blood pressure first.

Isometrics build muscle mass. In a recent experiment found an average size improvement of 12.4% for heavy isometric training and 5.3% with isometric training using weights equivalent to 60% of 1rm weight after a training period of 10 weeks.

Using Isometrics For Strength

To strengthen your bench press you could either get in a power rack and press the bar against an immoveable pin for a certain length of time, or hold a supra-maximal weight in a ¼ rep range for 6-20 seconds.

The first type of isometric movement, pushing against an immoveable object, is used only for strength, whereas the 2nd type, holding a weight and preventing it from moving, is best for strength as well as muscle growth. Personally, I prefer the 2nd type where you simply hold a weight in place for both strength and muscle growth.

Some say that when performing isometrics you will only strengthen the part of the movement you’re training. For example if doing isometrics in a ¼ range bench press position you’ll only strengthen that part of the movement. The truth is you will strengthen the part of the movement you’re training, but you also get a 15-30 degree carryover and if you train at the most disadvantageous joint angle (like the bottom of a bench press or point in the squat where your thighs are parallel) you actually get a 100% strength carryover through the rest of the movement.

Strengthen your weak links and everything else strengthens as well. In other words, if you perform an isometric contraction a few inches off your chest in the bench press you’ll tend to increase the strength of your entire bench press and the size of your entire chest! But if you only do isometrics over the easiest ¼ or 1/3 range in a movement you only get a 15-30 degree carryover.

If you really want to increase strength in a movement, using the bench press as an example, you’d simply use 3 different positions (bottom, mid-range, and top) and perform an isometric in each position. You’d perform isometrics in the contracted position near your chest, the midrange position, and then the extended position up top. A sample workout would be 2 sets of 10 seconds at each position with the lower position done first. For strength, each isometric contraction should last 20 seconds or less and ideally under 10 seconds.

The benefits of isometric exercise are so many and varied yet simple and cheap to implement. Give them a go, you will notice improvements very quickly and can then make isometrics a key part of your exercise regime.

The Basics of Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids – The Benefits and Cautions of Omega 3

There are three types of Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA’s) is found primarily in Perilla and Flaxseed Oils. DHA’s docosahexaenoic acid and EPA’s eicosapentaenoic acids are found in oils that are extracted from cold water fish.

Omega 6 fatty acids are known as Linoleic acid and Arachodonic acids. They are excessively present in the American and European diets. These diets are also seriously deficient in Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids. This discrepancy between Omega 3’s and Omega 6’s causes an imbalance that has been linked to Cancer, Heart disease, Arthritis, Macular Degeneration, Strokes, and some brain problems like Alzheimer’s.

The question that then arose was if the deficiency was the cause of, or a contributing factor to the development and progression of these problems: Would correcting the deficiency with increased consumption of Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids and decreased consumption of Omega 6 Essential Fatty Acids?

The results of several studies did show that these conditions can be treated, prevented, or reversed completely. Inflammatory diseases such as Arthritis, some Cancers, Macular Degeneration, Strokes, and Heart disease are just a few that have seen improved results. Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids prevent platelets from getting sticky and clumping together, thus reducing or preventing the clogging of the arteries. This would prevent or alleviate High Blood Pressure and high levels of Cholesterol.

It is also believed that Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids will also improve the symptoms of problematic behavior, learning problems, and ADHD in children and adults. Visual problems can be improved. Children with Omega 3 deficiency have also been noted to have dry skin and hair, increased urination, and increased thirst. These symptoms have been noted to improve after supplementation with Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids.

There are three basic sources of Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids. They are called essential because though they are needed by the body – it cannot make them on its own. They then must be obtained from food sources. Plant sources include Flax, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower and Brussels Sprouts. Sources from nuts and seeds include Sesame, Pumpkin seeds, and Walnuts. Fish sources include Wild Salmon, Snapper, Whiting, Shrimp, Oysters, Scallops, and King Crab. Beef that is grass fed also is high in Omega 3’s.

Cautions to be considered when considering adding Omega 3’s to your diet are the med- ications you may be on. Those on blood thinners, and cholesterol reducing medications should be careful because Omega 3’s naturally thin out blood and the combination could result in excessive bleeding during surgery or if injured. Those with Hemophilia should also be very careful with Omega 3’s. Person’s taking Cholesterol medication should also be careful as Omega 3’s have been effective in lowering Cholesterol.

Diabetes Has Become A Risk in Men's Lives

This is true because men with diabetes have an increased risk of developing erectile dysfunction compared with men without diabetes. Erectile dysfunction in diabetes has many potential causes, including the specific diabetes complications of neuropathy and vascular disease, as well as conditions commonly associated with diabetes, such as hypertension, use of various medications or psychogenic factors.

Diabetic impotent men reported anxiety erectile function and intercourse satisfaction at baseline, and ED had a greater impact on their emotional life. Diabetic men with ED had significantly different trends over time in the Erectile Function, Intercourse Satisfaction, Sexual Desire, Overall Satisfaction, and the Sexual Experience.

It is well established that erectile dysfunction is a serious condition that becomes more common as men age. Many older men, however, report that they are never asked about their sexual function even though older men can still have satisfactory erectile capacity and enjoy satisfying sexual relations.

As you probably know, impotence is the main sexual problem experienced by men with diabetes. In fact, as many as 50-60% of men with diabetes experience impotence at some point. Impotence, also called male erectile dysfunction, is the inability to have and maintain an erection rigid enough for sexual intervention.

The following factors can cause the problems men to experience diabetes-related sexual dysfunction:

a). Nerve damage caused by poor blood sugar control over a long period of time.

b). Circulation problems such as heart disease and high cholesterol, and others that relate to circulation.

c). Some medications such as blood pressure drugs, antidepressants, and stomach ulcer medications may have side effects that cause sexual dysfunction. Be sure to check with your doctor to see if any medications you're taking could cause ejaculation or erection problems.

d). Emotional or psychological factors such as depression, anger, stress and low self-esteem. These often contribute to sexual disinterest even if they're not the main cause.

e). Use of recreational drugs like alcohol and marijuana.

d). Low testosterone levels.

Now these days, several treatments are available for sexual dysfunction and it depend upon the physical and psychological factors specific to your condition. Cialis is probably the most well known drug that treats impotence.

Diabetes can lead to sexual problems for women also but not men only. These problems are often created by a complication known as neuropathy. Diabetic neuropathy is a nerve disorder caused by diabetes. Symptoms include numbness and sometimes pain in the hands, feet or legs. Neuropathy can also affect the nerves that control internal organs, genitals, small blood vessels and sweat glands of the skin, bladder muscles, and the gastrointestinal tract. These nerves are called autonomous nerves because they control the parts of your body that you do not move voluntarily. Autonomic neuropathy is the type of nerve disorder that causes sexual dysfunction in men and women with diabetes.

Why Do People Want To Lose Weight?

One motive for losing weight that is often sited, is a special occasion. I have a wedding to go to, I’m going on vacation in a month, usually something along these lines. Then it’s followed by an urgency to lose 5, 10 or 20 pounds in a short time period. This is not only impossible at times, but extremely unhealthy. Let’s say a person is successful in losing 20 pounds in a month. This can only occur through extremely strict dieting methods. The ability to sustain such a diet and/or workout regime is generally improbable. For example, if someone is eating 1200 calories a day when they really need 2000, and working out for an hour a day or more as well, the body will revolt by inflicting injury and fatigue. Not only that, when a normal diet with even a slightly higher caloric intake is resumed, the weight will be regained and often with additional pounds. Losing weight for a special occasion is not one of the better reasons to diet.

If I lost weight, he or she would love me. People often want to lose weight to capture the affections of someone else. On one hand it may be true that having a more attractive figure brings more attention, but it won’t bring the love that some seek. Attention received just because a person is physically attractive is very superficial and often short lived. A better starting point is loving yourself exactly as you are, so if you want to change your body composition, it’s entirely for you. In this way, you can keep the weight off and you won’t go on a binge because he or she doesn’t love you anymore.

Some who are obese or overweight are badly ridiculed by others. This contributes to low self-esteem and generally perpetuates the cycle of obesity or overeating. Often people who are overweight or obese are that way because food brings them comfort from emotional difficulties. In many ways society is flawed in that it puts very thin people on a pedestal and says that we must emulate them. But being extremely thin can be difficult to accomplish, so when a person who has weight to lose seeks to be extremely thin in a short period of time, it’s a recipe for disaster. Losing weight just to please society or some mean people who want to make fun of others who are different, is not the best reason to lose weight.

One extremely good reason to lose weight is for health reasons. Obesity is responsible for a lot of health problems. For example, the incidence of Type II Diabetes is on the rise and there is a link between obesity and diabetes. Eighty to Ninety percent of people diagnosed with Type II Diabetes are obese. Diabetes can cause kidney and nerve damage, heart and blood vessel disease, foot and eye damage, as well as hearing problems.

High blood pressure, nicknamed the silent killer, can also come about as a result of obesity. High blood pressure can cause kidney damage, it can cause total kidney failure and/or kidney artery aneurysm (which can lead to internal bleeding). Brain damage in the form of a stroke or cognitive impairment (problems with understanding and memory). It can also lead to heart and artery damage.

Osteoarthritis is another complication of obesity. This is a painful, irreversible disease of the joints of the body. It occurs when the cartilage in the joints of the body is broken down or lost. Cartilage acts as a cushion for the joints and when it is gone bones scrape against each other, which causes the afflicted extreme discomfort. Being overweight places an extra burden on the body, causing an extremely painful condition to be even more painful.

Sleep apnea and asthma are also problems that can be initiated or made worse by excessive weight. Sleep apnea is when a person stops breathing for a short period of time during sleep. Obesity is linked to sleep apnea because it is thought that the tonsils and extra fat on the neck of an obese person press on the airways when the throat muscles are relaxed during sleep. Asthma is another condition that can be caused or exacerbated by being overweight. Asthma is a chronic condition that occurs when the airways are inflammed with mucous, causing breathing problems. Obesity is linked to asthma, or higher instances of asthma, because excessive weight causes smaller lung capacity (ability to take in air) and chronic inflammation. Cancer, gallbladder disease and gallstones are also linked with obesity.

The reasons listed above are excellent reasons to lose weight. Some also want to lose weight to be able to play with kids and grandchildren, to have more energy and live a longer life. These are great motivators that can help with the lifestyle change that accompanies weight loss, not just something for a special occasion or to make others happy.

Ten Skin Problems of Pregnancy

Pregnancy brings with it many changes, emotionally, physically, and mentally. From a mental and emotional standpoint, you’re preparing to adopt a new role of parent, with all its accompanying responsibilities. Physically, of course, you’re dealing with changes in the shape, function, and movement of your body. While we have a society-wide belief that pregnant women are always glowing, that, unfortunately, is not always the case. No where is this more evident than in the skin problems of pregnancy.

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “the eyes are the window to the soul”. If this is true, your skin is the window to your current state of health and the changes taking place on the inside. During pregnancy, aside from all the other issues, you may also have to deal with a variety of skin changes, including rashes, acne, stretch marks, breaking nails, hair growth or loss, and dark blotches on the skin.

Most of these changes are directly linked to the enormous amount of hormonal fluctuations women experience during pregnancy. During pregnancy, there are all kinds of changes which can have impact on your skin, leading to new skin problems or worsening of existing ones. In some cases, pregnancy may actually help improve existing skin conditions. Let’s look at various skin conditions in more detail, defining the main ten skin problems of pregnancy.

1) Rashes. Rashes appear due to irritation of the skin. One common pregnancy rash is called pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP). This is the most frequently seen condition specific to pregnancy. Women with PUPPP demonstrate a rash which starts on the abdomen and can spread to the breasts, arms, thighs, and buttocks.

2) Acne. Acne is another skin condition that may get better or worse during pregnancy. Acne is, at least in part, driven by hormones, so the hormones of pregnancy can lead to more breakouts for some women, and clearer skin for others.

3) Oily skin. Oily skin is third skin condition which may arise during pregnancy. This is related to increased levels of androgen, the male sex hormone, which causes an increase in sebum production. The more sebum produced, the oilier the skin. Many women report that their skin and hair becomes oilier during pregnancy. Most of the time, these issues can be addressed with over the counter oil controlling cleansers and products.

4) Stretch marks. The fourth skin problem of pregnancy, stretch marks arise when the under layers of the skin is stretched, resulting in visible striations on the surface of the skin. Stretch marks can be treated after the fact, but the best treatment is always prevention. Keeping your skin well moisturized, especially on your tummy, breasts, thighs, can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

5) Spider angiomas. These are another possible skin problem of pregnancy. Spider angiomas are groups of very tiny blood vessels which gather around a central point and radiate out like the legs of a spider. Pregnant women are likely to develop these on their chest, faces, arms, and sometimes on other places on the body. Most of these spider angiomas clear up after pregnancy.

6) Chloasma. Chloasma, also called melasma, or the “mask of pregnancy” is another skin condition which is diagnosed when certain areas of the skin turn darker because of excess pigmentation. Most often, this condition affects places of the skin which are most often exposed to sun, like the upper lip, forehead, cheeks. This condition is likely to clear up after pregnancy. Again, you can lessen your chances of chloasma by using a good (baby safe) doctor recommended sunscreen throughout the course of your pregnancy.

7) Too much hair. Changes in the hair are also common during pregnancy. Some women lose a lot of hair within a few months after delivery, while many are troubled with excess hair growth during pregnancy. Excess hair growth is most often seen on the lip and chin, and is triggered by an increase in androgen and other male hormones during pregnancy.

8) Brittle nails. Many women experience breaking, splitting, or brittleness to their nails during pregnancy. Physicians aren’t quite sure why this occurs, but it may be managed with an over the counter nail hardening polish. Check with your doctor.

9) Skin tags. Skin tags are little pieces of skin which over-grow and hang from the neck. These can increase in number during pregnancy. If you have skin tags before pregnancy, it may be that pregnancy will cause these to increase.

10) Atopic dermatitis. Also known as eczema, this skin condition may appear or worsen during pregnancy. Marked by extreme skin itchiness, too much scratching can lead to the skin become red, swollen, or cracked.

If you are pregnant, be sure to watch for these ten skin problems of pregnancy. If you begin to develop any of these conditions, seek appropriate medical advice; you don’t have to suffer through these conditions for the whole nine months. Chances are that your doctor will have recommendations which can address your skin problems so you can have healthy, beautiful skin, even while you’re pregnant.

The Importance of Sleep

Getting a good quality night's sleep is essential for a person's overall health and well being according to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF). But we do not need an expert organization to tell us this as we all know how much better we feel when we have gotten a good night's sleep. When we have not had enough sleep irritability, moodiness and disinhibition are some of the signs we experience from lack of sleep. Disinhibition is used to describe when we have lack of restraint and poor risk assessment. It is a process which results in a person having reduced capacity to edit or manage their immediate impulsive response to a situation. Sleep deprivation can also lead to a person having an impaired memory, slowed speech and an inability to multitask. This is not good for the busy lives we lead today.

The amount of sleep we need varies with each individual but on average an adult needs 8 hours of sleep. Some people are able to function well with just 6 hours sleep whereas others need 10.

The many scientists and psychologists who have studied sleep disorders have shown that lack of sleep can affect the following:

• The immune system – The immune system is a protection mechanism made up of a network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect the body, it is the body's natural defense against infectious organisms such as bacteria, microbes, viruses, parasites and toxins.

• Metabolic functions – The processes necessary for the maintenance of a living organism.

• Brain and the nervous system – The brain controls everything we do and The nervous systems is a network of tissues that controls actions, thoughts, emotions, sensations, and all of the basic body functions.

• Cardiovascular system – This includes the heart and blood vessels, arteries, veins and capillaries. The system transports food, hormones, metabolic wastes, and gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from cells.

So as you can see by the list above it is very important to get good nights sleep. There are many reasons why some of us have trouble sleeping and many people who can sleep take it for granted. Insomnia could be one reason, insomnia is when you are tired during the day and struggle to nod off, and once you do nod off you sleep lightly and wake up too early. Insomnia can be caused by medical problems, substance use or an emotional issue. Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder caused by difficulty in breathing during sleep. Loud snoring and then long pauses in breathing followed by gasping for breath are the main symptoms. Stress could also be a factor in why some people can not sleep.

If your one of the millions that can relate to this article, then you should visit your doctor as soon as possible. Once your doctor has diagnosed you properly they will have a rough idea of where your problems stem from. Remember to be honest to your doctor about your lifestyle as it could just be a few simple changes that will make you get your sleeping back on track.

The importance of sleep should never be underestimated. Our brain is like a computer that needs power to work. Our brains need to shut down and rest so they are charged and ready to work for us each day.

To treat general anxiety, doctors often have a tendency to prescribe quite a few numbers of medications of different types. The methods that are recommended by these doctors may certainly in most cases fall into the category of anti depressants. They may even be sedatives or depressants. The combinations of these medications and the prescriptions will mainly depend on the symptoms the patient is experiencing in particular.

Anxiety medications have to be taken as prescribed by the doctors. It is very important to take the right dosage for the medication to be effective when you are taking anti depressants. When sedatives are being used patients should be attentive to the precautions.

These medications can help people get back to their normal life and take control of it.

Sleep Mist – Perfect For Adults Who Want to Be Babied

In a nutshell, we love good smells. Many adults respond so positively to certain smells because it helps to trigger an old memory that we may reflect fondly upon. The feelings and images that it conjures up create such a pleasant mood within us and we develop this natural high, because the brain has released more endorphins. But, this is a calm and peaceful feeling that washes over us, and makes our bodies want to relax. Now, wouldn’t you want this feeling to help you battle all of that restlessness you’ve been experiencing during the night?

Aromatherapy has grown in popularity over the years, most likely because adults are getting sick and tired of being plied with the wide variety of medications and gimmicks that claim to have you sleeping well in no time. But many of these can be quite addictive and/or costly, so it is sometimes not even worth it. And chances are, your problems will just become worse once you stop doing it.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you just lied down on your bed, and were gently lulled into a peaceful slumber, and you did not wake up feeling like a groggy mess the next day? When all you need to do is spray your linens with a wonderful aroma, those other ‘get some sleep quick’ gimmicks seem so over the top. We want to feel good inside, rather than ply our bodies with unnecessary chemicals that can do more harm than good.

What it comes down to is that we want to feel nurtured and cared for, even if we are doing things to pamper ourselves. Our rooms often times become a sanctuary, a safe haven where we feel like we can truly rest, be ourselves, and just enter a nice world of dreams. But, that little devil insomnia creeps up at night and then ruins all of our good-natured plans by causing us to wake frequently and cause sleeplessness.

So adults, we need to take back the night and make ourselves as comfortable as possible. Find someone to tuck you in, or just make your bed nice and relaxing for yourself. Take that bottle of sleep mist, and gingerly cover your sheets and pillows with the most luxurious scents that you love. You can feel so good about going to sleep, and your restlessness will become a thing of the past. Just lie back and drift off slowly and nicely into a great sleep that you have not experienced in years.

You do not have to be embarrassed that you want to be babied from time to time, particularly when it comes to sleeping. Insomnia can cause us to be so frazzled and grumpy, so doing something to make us feel young and refreshed again holds no shame. Close your eyes, picture yourself as a young child, turn over and breathe in those gentle aromas, and dream about all the things you used to do and still can do to feel like a kid again. Don’t let a sleeping problem get in the way of taking care of yourself the way you should be.

Getting Older Does not Always Mean Getting Better

Everyone knows that many wines get better with age. Their flavor becomes more complex, more balanced, and more refined. If only we could all be like a fine wine. Unfortunately, we are not, which means body parts will break down, reactions will slow, and health issues will pop up. There are things we can do to slow down the aging process, but we can never stop it. Some will turn to exercise or diet, others will turn to medicine and use plastic surgery or bariatrics. Whatever the case, these are all just short-term solutions will only delay the inevitable. In the end, age gets the best of us all.

The signs usually start slowly. You may not recover quite as quickly from a workout or from pulling weeds in the yard. Those aches and pains linger for a little longer, and then do not go away at all. Before you know it, it looks like you¡¯re spending more time in the doctor's office than you do at home. Some of those visits might be routine physicals, akin to getting your car's oil changed. Other times it's more serious, something that requires a da vinci prostatectomy. Sure, some people are reliably free of serious health problems until they reach a very advanced age, but those people are few and far between. Most of us find ourselves on some sort of medication to help alleviate the symptoms of a condition. The hope is that all it takes is a simple pill to solve your issues. Those that suffer from terminal illnesses or conditions without a known cure are not so lucky.

Of course, there is hope. The fact is more and more information is out there every day about how to take better care of yourself. Even though diet and exercise will not help you live forever, they certainly will make your life richer and more fulfilling, as your overall health will be better. And if you do happen to need more serious help for something that is wrong, it's nice to know there are procedures like heart bypass surgery out there. No matter how well you take care of yourself, heredity may just not be on your side. That's why medications to cure hereditary conditions and surgical procedures that were not possible even ten years ago are so important to quality of life. Even though we do not age like fine wine, at least we can live long enough to drink a glass or two.

Physiological Effects of Alcohol Abuse: Your Health Is the Real Cost

Alcohol is a highly addictive mind-altering substance, although it is widely accepted around most of the world. Its abuse is the number one drug problem in the US; Over 50% of adult population in the US, are regular drinkers. There are over 25,000 alcohol induced deaths per year, excluding accidents and homicides. Chronic or overuse of alcohol has many negative effects on the human physical body and the mind. Long term alcohol abuse may drive some into poverty, but the real cost is one's health.

Alcohol Related Health Issues

Heavy alcohol use increases the risks for many diseases, such as liver cirrhosis, pancreatitis and cancer. It suppresses the immune system, making one more susceptible to high respiratory infections; furthermore, it interferes with the absorption of calcium, which may lead to osteoporosis. Alcohol influences one's brain chemistry, altering mood, arousal and behavior. Long term use may cause memory loss, confusion, balance problems and sleep disturbances.

Women and Alcohol

Because women in general weigh less than men, they are more severely affected by alcohol. When alcohol passes through the digestive tract it is dissolved in the stored water in the body; therefore, alcohol is less diluted in women's bodies, increasing health risks and damage on the organs. Women who drink are more susceptible to coronary heart disease and breast cancer. They may experience fertility issues, irregular periods, and during pregnancy, alcohol may cause miscarriages, along with significant abnormalities in the developing baby.

Men and Alcohol

Men are more likely to drink excessively than women, and when inoxicated, are more likely to take part in unprotected, risky sexual behavior. Alcohol abuse interferees with healthy testicular function and male hormone production, which causes impotence, loss of sex drive, wasting of testicles, infertility and low testosterone. Due to its diuretic properties, alcohol causes dehydration and loss of many vital minerals and salts. Additionally, it blocks the absorption of vitamins, which may cause malnutrition as well as cancer of the large bowel and rectum.

Alcoholism in the US

Alcoholism is a more serious problem that most suspect. There are over 12 million alcoholics in the US. Because these serious health concerns do not manifest immediately, regular drinking and even overuse is accepted by many. It is shocking to see how some lives are ruined because of one's inability to stop drinking. It is a strong physical and emotional addiction, that for many, is hard to break. There are support groups such as Alcohol Anonymous, a highly effective program, along with behavioral therapies and medicines.

If you or your loved one is affected by alcoholism and need assistance, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration can provide you with assistance, printed material and treatment referral information. You may also go to their website and access the Substance Abuse Treatment Services Locator to find a facility near you. You may also call the SAMHSA Treatment Referral Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357) 1-800-487-4889 (TDD).

Math Teacher to Teacher, We Need More Creative Math Tools!

I remember my first day teaching at the community college. I wondered how I would get my students to succeed, while feeling confident in their math skills and having the tools to succeed in their later math classes. There was some hits and misses, and overall I did OK for my first class. There’s something I realized though, actually a few things about the students.

1. The students lack confidence to do the mathematics.

2. The basic skills needed to solve problems could use some work.

Now why do I say that? One thing a student would say throughout the semester is “is that it?” or “that’s all I have to do?”, and I would say yes!

Sometimes the students are a bit slow at computing. I teach them the concept, and they get it, but I find that the basic skills lack, like addition, subtraction, and especially multiplication and division.

Now, there are a few things that I have found to counteract those two potential problems in the classroom and I will share.

1. http://www.interactmath.com

2. Mathematics Games!

With interactmath.com, there’s every textbook imaginable on the site for math up through multivariable calculus, and it’s just problems. But guess what? When the students get the answers right, they get a giant FANTASTIC!! or GOOD JOB!! It may not seem like much, but it really is a confidence booster. It helps them get the concepts much easier, and they are more willing to learn.

What about math games? Consider this scenario. Suppose you are sitting at home with your child and you know that he is struggling in math. You have the skills to teach him, but he just isn’t motivated. Which do you think he will respond to more aptly:

a. “Son, let’s go practice some math problems.”

b. “Son, let’s go play some games!!!”

Same deal with a lot of adults in college too. Games make the learning process more fun, and the concepts not only sink in better, but their memory recall is much more useful! I’ve found some tools online that helps in that process. You can play monopoly games where you have to count, but how about games that are targeted to sharpening mathematics skills? See the source for the link.

For teachers out there, I hope this helps. Let us try to help our students learn as much math as they can without them feeling like math is the worst enemy!
