Mainstream and Alternative Treatments For Trigeminal Neuralgia

Pain can be a sign or a warning that there is something seriously wrong with you. If, for example, you are experiencing recurring fits of severe pain in the face, you are most likely suffering from trigeminal neuralgia. What is this condition, and how can you get rid of it?

Trigeminal neuralgia (also called tic douloureux) is an example of true neuralgia, the other two being causalgia and glossopharyngeal neuralgia. It is generally known to be a symptom rather than a disease. In contrast to neuritis (a degenerative lesion of a nerve), it does not exhibit any identical change in the nerve's structure.

This is an acute paroxysmal pain that involves one or more branches of the trigeminal nerve. This nerve moves sensations (such as feel, cold, heat, and pain) from the face to the central nervous system. Once this nerve fails to function normally, a powerful sensation of pain is unleashed. The pain is not constant, but it occurs in sudden outbreaks. Often, it is triggered by some activity that affects the face or by something that comes in contact with the face. It can be the dessert chewing of food or the light touch of fingers. It sees as if these simple, natural activities are converted into pain by the trigeminal nerve's excessive reaction.

Various studies and researchers have replied to the development of several options and techniques to treat trigeminal neuralgia. One particular option involves the use of certain drugs (those that are not classified as painkillers) which influence the way sensory messages are transmitted by the nerves. Specifically, these drugs work to prevent the nerves from transforming ordinary sensations into pain. But some drugs are known to cause serious side effects, including dizziness, skin rash, ataxia (also called incoordination), and, worse, damage to the blood-forming tissues.

In another treatment option (this one's considered drastic), alcohol is injected into the involved nerve. This may put a temporary stop to the pain that may last for up to about one-and-a-half years.

Another option involves surgery in which some of the nerve cells that are responsible for conveying pain are destroyed; or the surgeon may ease the pressure on the nerve cells caused by enlarged blood vessels. However, these procedures have generated some controversies since they are known to numb or even weakened the face permanently.

There are many other ways to treat trigeminal neuralgia. You actually have a number of safe choices from including several options available – both mainstream and alternative – that can help you get relief from this pain fast.

Some Facts on Cryptic Tonsils

Maybe you wonder why there your throat feels so uncomfortable for so long. When you swallow, it is harder than usual. You can also smell your very own breath and it’s so annoying. You feel embarrassed talking even with your closest friend. It can affect your self esteem in a long run. These things might be due to the presence of what experts call cryptic tonsils.

Tonsils are vital organs in the body. They filter out germs and bacteria that are capable of entering the body. Tonsils are constantly subjected to a barrage of bacteria infectious organisms because they are the in the boundary of the mouth and the main passageways. The tonsils are very prone to become inflamed. A cryptic tonsil is one of the most common problems in the tonsils.

By definition, cryptic tonsils are pocket stones in the tonsils. They occur when the folds in the tonsils trap food particles and dead bacteria. When accumulate food and other materials as well, they can eventually cause infection. They also contribute to the development of bad breath and occasionally, sore throat. There are many other terminologies for cryptic tonsils such as tonsilloliths, chronic case tonsillitis tonsil stones and fetid tonsils.

When you open your mouth and observe in the mirror, it is easy to figure out whether you have cryptic tonsils. They look like white beads on your tonsils. Sometimes they seem like patches of pus, cheese or a bigger grain of rice. When they discover presence of cryptic tonsils, they conclude that they have throat infection. But this is not true in all cases. Infection will only occur if the stones are not removed and gets bigger. It can become worse because of the unwanted bacteria that get accumulated.

People with bigger throat pockets are more prone to having cryptic tonsils. With bigger pocket, the food that you eat gets trapped more easily. There are other materials like phlegm that can be hanging in there at the same time. When the bacteria produce volatile sulfur compounds, the person surely suffers from bad breath.

Fortunately, cryptic tonsils are not really dangerous to health. Nevertheless, they must be removed to avoid having worse condition. They are very inconvenient can affect one’s totality as a person. There are some people who use water picks to remove the stones. But this can be really risky and until now, there are no studies that can back up the practice. As much as possible, you must avoid using sharp objects in your throat.

How Cushing's Syndrome Can Cause Diabetes

Other than lifestyle and environmental factors, type 2 diabetes can also be caused by Cushing's syndrome.

Usually, it happens more in adults than any other age groups. What happens is the cortisol hormone is produced excessively from the adrenal glands. Adrenal glands are located at the kidneys.

Cortisol hormone

It is a hormone which serves to increase blood glucose whenever it is low. However, too much of cortisol can cause diabetes.

Why cortisol is being produced excessively?

The number one reason is tumor. This tumor affects the pituitary gland in which it makes the gland produce too much adrenocortical stimulating hormone or 'ACTH'. Consequently, the 'ACTH' makes more cortisol to be produced.

The secondary reason is the benign tumor stimulis cortisol overproduction in one of the adrenals.

The tumors discussed in the 2 reasons are the benign type. Benign means harmless and would not cause death.

Symptoms of the Cushing's syndrome

The most prevalent symptom is a round face with trunk obesity. However, these symptoms are only seen in later stages.

In today's modern world, people are getting diagnosed earlier and therefore the symptoms are different.

  • Acne
  • Skin gets bruised easily
  • Irregularity of menstruation
  • Depression
  • Sexual interest loss
  • Tiredness and weakness

Diagnosing Cushing's syndrome

Doctors will observe the cortisol level in the blood in the morning and night. A person with Cushing's syndrome will have his or her blood contained less cortisol in the evening.

High 'ACTH'

Doctors will take an X-ray of the pituitary gland. If there is a tumor, then it needs to be removed by surgery or radiation therapy.

Low 'ACTH'

The tumor can be safely removed through surgery.

X-rays of chest and abdomens

The results will show the source of ectopic production of 'ACTH'. Usually, a small cell carcinoma in the lungs would be found. This carcinoma may or may not be operable.

Diabetes resulting from the syndrome

Usually, the diabetes is mild and not serious. Diagnosing early also proves to be very important to treating diabetes.

Therefore, people must be careful when taking prescriptions with cortisol in them. This is most common when people are taking cortisol for anti-inflammatory action.

Common Compllications Associated With Obesity

Obesity has become a growing problem in today's world but never has anyone been more broadly affected by this issue than our children are. Research has shown that large numbers of children who are obese had parents who were also obese. While obesity is considered to be hereditary to a point it is also a learned behavior as well.

Many times people who are faced with the problem of obesity are so affected because they do not have the necessary information to prevent the problem. This is one of the largest reasons why health care providers now make such huge attempts to educate as many people as possible about the dangers of obesity and the dangerous effects it can have on a person's health. In addition to how it affects a person's appearance obesity can have many other effects some of which often lead to life threatening conditions. Some of the most common complications that can develop in relation to obesity include the following:

• Back pain
• Cardiac issues
• Breathing problems
• Blood clots
• Diabetes

Along with the physical conditions which can develop as a result of obesity there are many psychological problems which may also be associated with obesity. Of these one of the most common is low self esteem. Obese individuals often face such ridicule from their peers over their condition that their self esteem is lowered to such a level that they begin to feel they are completely worthless.

There are many factors that may cause a person to become obese. Among the most common of these factors is lack of proper nutrition and exercise. Eating right is not only important but essential to good health. But proper nutrition alone is not enough exercise is also an integral part of staying healthy and fighting obesity.

If you are someone who is having serious problems with obesity you should talk to your health care provider about proper diet and exercise options for your lifestyle and health. Never begin any diet or exercise program without first taking this step as it can have an effect on various medical problems that you may not even know exist.

Picture of Toe Nail Fungus

If you have a problem with a fingernail or toenail, you may wonder if you have a fungal infection, and you're probably looking for a good picture of toe nail fungus. Be careful how – other nail abnormalities can look very similar to fungal infection of the nail (onychomycosis). It is best not to try to make your own diagnosis, but to consult your family doctor or even a dermatologist for a proper diagnosis of the problem.

There are many pictures of severe nail fungi on the internet. They can often be found at websites for nail products or manicure and pedicure services, at sites that advertise remedies for nail fungus, and on medical websites. For a valuable comparison of a picture of toe nail fungus and pictures of other nail problems, visit The Dermatologists' Image Resource at Photos of onychomycosis are found under the " distal subungual "link; however, look at the pictures under the other links as well – you will see how similar other nail abnormalities can look.

If you find a picture of toe nail fungus that looks just like what you are suffering with, you should make an appointment with your doctor so that a sample can be sent to the lab for confirmation. Many general practitioners will rule out some nail fungus before sending you on to a specialist, and the easiest way to do this is to take some scrapings of the nail and have them cultured for fungi – if the report is negative for nail fungus, you will usually be sent to a dermatologist who knows more about these conditions.

If the doctor confirms your suspicion that you have severe nail fungus, you will be able to start treatment knowing that it is likely to help. Be aware, however, that a number of different fungal species cause nail infections, and that no treatment for onychomycosis works in all cases. Many people prefer traditional home remedies or natural alternatives to the prescription drugs that are available. Controlled trials show that the prescription drugs do not always work, even when used for a long period of time, and that there are occasional serious side effects. Studies of some of the newest natural herbal treatments, such as tea tree oil indicate that these products may be just as good while being safer to use. If these treatments continue to show promise, the picture of toe nail fungus treatment may change. In the mean time, investigate the options and choose the treatment you are most comfortable with.

7 Foods To Increase Your Penis Size And Erection Strength

Food is the daily supply of nutrients that keeps you going. If you can afford to eat out at nice restaurants, food is also your daily pleasure. Its also the main thing that helps keep your body healthy and stay fit.

Without the right nutrients entering your body through the foods you eat, you will suffer from physical weakness, malnutrition and various other health problems.

How food affects erection strength and penis size

I bet you didn’t know that food has a direct impact on the size of your penis. Thats right, and not many people are aware just how much certain things have on our bodies. For example, the pants you wear can disrupt the process of spermatogenesis (the production of sperm in the testes) by being too tight. Appearance is important, but it is not worth sacrificing a few million sperm to look good in a pair of tight jeans.

The key to finding the foods that enhance your penis is to look for foods that increase blood flow. Certain substances, called vasolidators work by relaxing smooth muscles that are found in the walls of blood vessels. Some examples are tuna, salmon, eggs, milk, liver, and vegetables like broccoli, carrots, tomatoes and sweet potatoes.

So can food add me 3 inches?

No, these foods wont add inches, but they do provide an excellent source of nutrients that will promote good blood flow which is key for to maintaining erection hardness. If your circulatory system is in shape, by eating the right foods, then more blood can pass through your sex organs giving you a slightly longer and much thicker erection.

Thrush And Vaginitis: Signs, Symptoms, Cure

My youngest had thrush and sacrificed for days. The best the doctors could do was to change her formula, low grade antibiotic, and WAIT. A natural cure was of course not mentioned.

Let's discuss Candida, the cause of Thrush, and what can bring on this painful infection.

In essence, Thrush is a yeast infection, but much more advanced in it's stage.

Let's discuss what it is, how it starts, and how to treat it. Let's begin.

Candidiasis is the mass growth of Candida Albicans caused by the overgrowth of yeast in the mouth or intestine. This is caused by the lack of flora (Acidophillus and Bifida) which id the result of depletion or eratication of such bacteria. By bacteria, I mean GOOD bacteria.

This bacteria is what keeps the yeast (Candida Albicans) at bay. Both are needed for proper digestion, but if the fluorine is destroyed, the yeast multiplies OUT OF CONTROL !!! At this point, the yeast enters the blood system and concentrates into a moist, warm, environment. This can happen in the mouth or genital area. the yeast infection has now planted and will start to grow.

This is where vaginitis and thrush come from. If the yeast infection goes unnoticed or at worst untreated, this nasty little bacterial infection can blow up and become quite painful.

Now that we know what it is, lets see what can do to treat it naturally with mostly household items and a few inexpensive purchases from your local grocer.

1. First, clean the infected area by washing it with clean (sterile) water. Anti-bacterial soaps only. Shower gels and bath gels are not recommended as they contain perfumes. After cleaning, completely dry the area.

2. Sexual intercourse is the worst thing one can do. It can be passed like an STD and even worse, the friction can irritate the area making the infection worse. In addition, if spermicides and lubricants are used, the chemicals can cause allergic reactions combined with the already apparent issues earlier mentioned.

3. Tight fitting garments as well as synthetic fibers can worsen the condition. In addition to the irritation caused by coarse, unnatural, fibers, yeast drives best in warm, moist climates. Keep clothing loose and 100% natural.

4. Stress causes the immune system to weak causing the infection to thrive as it can not be cooked. Relax.

5. Aloe Vera gel can also be bought in alternative medicine and herb stores and is a great start for natural relief. Apply the Aloe Vera gel to the affected area. This can reduce pain as it does for a sunburn.

6. Alcohol and Drugs both lower immunity and increase blood sugar. High blood sugar increases yeast growth as yeast naturally feed on sugar.

7. Yogurt is one of the best known natural remedies. Plain yogurt bacteria feed on yeast. Highly recommended. Ingest as well as apply to the infected area. Very messy, but highly effective.

8. Keep your diet as natural as possible. By this I mean, stay away from processed foods, especially sugars and carbohydrates. Stick to fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains, and foods with low sodium and unnatural sugars. Honey and molasses recommended as a substitute.

Thrush and vaginitis are the worst of the worst for candida yeast infections. Do not let it get to that point. If you feel you have candida setting in, change your diet immediately! If this infection is treated quickly, the natural equilibrium of your yeast to bacteria ratio will be restored and you can permanently cure this ailment for good. All of this information and more can be found from my good friend, Linda Allen. For a more in depth approach to a candida yeast cure and how it can work for you, Click Here!

Oyster Can Give You Hepatitis A

From 1983 to 1989, the incidence of hepatitis A in the United States reached 58 percent. Some 35,800 cases were reported in the latter year.

Many were foodborne-related outbreaks that occurred in Alaska, Florida, North Carolina, and Washington. The contaminants included, among others, an ice-slush beverage purchased from a convenience store and iced tea prepared by an infected intravenous drug user who made sandwiches and drinks in a restaurant.

Contaminated frozen strawberries from a processing plant in California were the cause of two separate hepatitis A outbreaks in Georgia and Montana. In the former, 13 students and two teachers of an elementary school contracted the disease in two weeks after eating strawberry shortcake in the school cafeteria.

In the Montana episode that took place at an institution for the developmentally disabled, 13 got the disease during a three-week period following the ingestion of desserts containing frozen strawberries.

An early outbreak in London in 1989 involved more than 50 residents of a group of villages. This was traced to bread prepared in a shop and its outlets by workers with soiled hands.

The womanizing librarian Giovanni Giacomo Casanova once recommended 50 oysters for breakfast for those hungry for aphrodisiacs. But instead of getting the girl of your dreams, following that advice could give you hepatitis A.

The reason? Shellfish (oysters, mussels, cockles, or clams) are more likely to transmit the disease. This is because shellfish filter large amounts of water and tend to leave large quantities of bacteria and viruses behind, including the one responsible for hepatitis A.

This was the sad experience of China which had three separate hepatitis A epidemics in 1978, 1982 and 1988 – all attributed to eating raw shellfish. The largest outbreak occurred in Shanghai in 1988, affecting about 300,000 people with 45 fatalities, according to Stephen C. Hadler of the Center for Infectious Diseases Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

"The first documented .outbreak of hepatitis A due to ingestion of shellfish was reported in 1956 when 600 Swedes who had eaten oysters harvested from waters contaminated with human sewage, contracted the disease. USA, Asia, and Australia. While cultivation and distribution of shellfish is often carefully regulated, the nature of the business makes policing the laws extremely difficult. These factors, together with the prolonged incubation period, make shellfish-associated infection difficult to investigate so that many probably go undetected, "disclosed Ian D. Gust in" Epidemiological Patterns of Hepatitis A in Different Parts of the World "published in the journal Vaccine.

Believe it or not swimming can make you susceptible to hepatitis A. This was reported by Dr. Frank J. Mahoney of the CDC in an article in The Journal of Infectious Diseases.

In that article, Mahoney said 20 people aged four to 36 succumbed to hepatitis A in 1989 after swimming in contaminated water in a campground in Louisiana.

Prior to the outbreak, the victims swam in two public pools – a Jacuzzi pool and an adult pool which investigators said could have been contaminated with fecal material or raw sewage owed to the pools' unusual design and filtering system. That plus the behavior of the swimmers (who either swallow or spit water while swimming) put them at great risk for contracting hepatitis A.

"We speculate that the pools may have been contaminated either by fecal contamination from one of the swimmers or by cross-connection with the sewage. at the campground reported that fecal contamination of the pools by swimmers was not uncommon, "Mahoney and his colleagues said. (Next: Homosexuals at risk for hepatitis A.)

Stomach Ulcer Diet – Things You Can Do To Control An Ulcer

Let's take a look at a stomach ulcer diet you can use to help the pain you are in. A stomach ulcer is also called an gastric ulcer for a reason. It is a break in the stomach lining that allows digestive juices and acids to damage the tissues benefit the lining.

It can cause pain, vomiting, and bleeding. It may occur as a result of the body experiencing sensitive stress, for example, a spinal cord injury. A stomach ulcer is painful and if left untreated can become a serious detriment to your health and the lifestyle you lead on a daily basis.

Here are a few things you can do yourself to help yourself.

– Chew and swallow your food slower. This will make it easier to digest. In these fast times we all get in a hurry and this diet tip can make a big difference to your stomach ulcer.

– Do not overeat at any one time. Keep yourself feeling full by eating several times a day which will prevent overestating.

– Sit up while eating and for 1 hour afterwards. If you feel up to it take a short walk to keep your metabolism up.

– Try not to eat for 3 hours before you go to bed. Eating snacks before bedtime can cause gastric acid secret during the night as well.

– Include milk, meat, egg, cheese, and more protein in your diet at each meal and snack.

– Cut back on the amount of caffeine in your foods and drinks. Tomato products, chocolate, and citrus is hard on your ulcer and should be eliminated from your stomach ulcer diet.

– Milk and cream should not be used as antacid therapy. Although milk protein has an initial neutralizing effect on gastric acid, it is also a very potent stimulant. Hourly feedings of milk have been shown to produce a lower pH than three regular meals.

– Do not sit down and eat if you are feeling stressed and your ulcer is hyper. Be relaxed when you do eat.

– Antacids should be taken in the doses they are prescribe. This is usually one and 3 hours after meals and prior to bedtime. This will help keep the acidity of your stomach at the most stable and low level.

A proper stomach ulcer diet will help you control your ulcer and the discomfort that comes with it. As you can see these are simple things you can do to help yourself everyday.

Treatment of Stomach Pain by Finding the Cause – Part Three – Ulcers

The treatment of stomach pain needs to embrace the whole of you. What are you doing to cause or contribute to this problem? What other steps can you take to prevent its recurrence? What acute treatment is safe to use and without side effects?

  • The treatment of stomach pain is going to yield better and far reaching results if the cause is found and addressed along with any acute treatment.

Stomach pain can come from a wide variety of reasons – gastritis, ulcers, hernia, reflux, food allergy, reaction to drugs such as antibiotics and anti-inflammatory, malignancy, gall bladder problems, hepatitis, pancreatitis, angina even endometriosis.

And some abdominal pain from bowel disorders are described as stomach pain.

With this array of possible reasons, it's helpful to know that homeopathy works by matching your unique and personal symptoms to those of the most appropriate medicine. Without this close match, no relief will be gained.

The work entailed to get this match is often best left to the skills of a professional homeopath. But, if you have a homeopathic home prescribing kit, you may well be able to do the work yourself. The common medicines found in these kits cover many ailments, so little work is needed to get good results.

The homeopathic medicine Lycopodium can help those who suffer from a wide variety of liver problems. As the liver is part of the digestive process, you typically find the two go together. Gastritis and peptic ulcers come under its sphere of influence.

The strong keynote symptoms of Lycopodium include:

  • bloating and distention are the main cause of the pain which is improved by passing gas, either up or down
  • these symptoms are worse than eating, even small amounts, especially the bean family andions
  • reflux or heartburn is also common, with sour burping
  • usually has a ravenous appetite, needing to get up to eat during the night
  • has a huge desire for sweet things
  • the worse time is usually late afternoon to early evening
  • some improvement is felt from rubbing the stomach

Is Lymphedema Curable?

This is often asked by those who suffer from this condition. Approximately 3 million people in the US suffer from Lymphedema and it is caused by a variety of reasons. Some people develop Lymphedema for no apparent reason. However, it can be caused by surgeries performed for different types of cancer. The surgeries may cause damage to the lymph nodes and they will swell. This, in turn causes blockages that prevent fluids from draining.

The result can be painful and prevent those who are suffering from this condition from performing simple tasks. Therefore, it is natural that one of the common questions, "Is Lymphedema curable?" is often asked by those who suffer from this debilitating condition. The answer is no, it is not, but there are treatments that can help the body to transport the fluids back into the lymphatic system and provide relief from pain.

Lymphedema, when left untreated can cause a number of other problems. Infections, gangrene and even amputation of the affected limb may become necessary. The areas most often affected are the arms and legs. Researchers have been studying this condition for many years and the most recent breakthroughs have shown some amazing results. One that has been developed and has shown to be quite beneficial is the use of a Lymphedema pump. The pump helps by draining the fluid away from the affected area and back into the lymphatic system, which mimics the body's natural way of disposing of the fluids.

The Lymphedema pump has an attached sleeve that is placed on the arm or leg and as it inflates and deflates, it causes the fluid to be pushed away from the area and back into the lymphatic system. Many people who have suffered from Lymphedema for years have found this to be a very effective way of providing relief from pain and swelling. Additionally, the use of a Lymphedema pump can help those who have this condition to be able to exercise, which is recommended by doctors to treat Lymphedema.

The Lymphedema pump is portable and can be easily transported. Therefore it is not a problem to take along on vacation, on a business trip or a family visit. They are quiet allowing them to be used even while watching television. The pumps are also covered by most insurance plans when a physician determinates that they are a medical necessity. For those who are suffering from Lymphedema, the pumps provide a major source of relief from the pain and swelling associated with this condition.

Another benefit that the Lymphedema pump can provide is for those who may suffer from circulation problems or surgeries that may require being immobile for a period of time. They can help to reduce the risk of developing blood clots. Is Lymphedema curable? No, there has been no cure developed as yet; however, many have found relief from the pain and swelling by using a Lymphedema pump. Furthermore, they have regained the ability to perform tasks for themselves and return to a normal life.

How Diabetes Causes Heart Attacks

A recent study from Washington University in St Louis may explain why more than 75 percent of diabetics die of heart disease ( Journal for the American College of Cardiology , February 7, 2006). The heart muscle of diabetics uses a much higher percentage of fat for energy than that of non-diabetics, to markedly increase risk for heart attacks.

The energy source for heart muscle is mostly sugar and fat, and to a lesser degree, protein. Muscles need far more oxygen to process fat than to process sugar. The blood supply to heart muscle comes from large arteries on the outside of the heart. Diabetics have narrowed arteries because high blood sugar levels cause plaques to form and reduce the diameter of the coronary arteries. The increased need for blood flow from burning fat and the reduced blood flow from narrowed arteries put diabetics at very high risk for heart attacks, heart failure and sudden death. The increased use of oxygen increases blood levels of oxidants that further damage the inner linings of arteries.

Another study from Sweden shows that many people discover that they are diabetic only after they have had a heart attack. Researchers recorded blood sugar levels in men who had had heart attacks and then did sugar tolerance tests at discharge and three months later. They found that 35 percent had diabetic sugar tolerance tests at hospital discharge and 40 percent had impaired sugar tolerance tests three months later ( Lancet , Volume 359, 2002).

Therefore, 40 percent of people who have heart attacks are diabetic, even though they may not know it. Many of the diabetics had normal HBA1C blood tests, the standard test to measure diabetic control. Furthermore, the patients who were unknown diabetics had a much higher rate of sudden death from their heart attacks than those who were not diabetic. The authors recommend that all people with heart attacks be tested for diabetes.

Hot Process Soap Making – Old Fashioned?

Most people involved in hobby soap making – and until recently I included myself in this group, think that hot process soap making is a) the old fashioned way to make soap, b) too time intensive, or c) "there is obviously a reason why not many people do it that way any more. "

Then due to time pressures I decided: "what the heck, I'm gonna make a batch anyway"

You see with cold process soap making you have to make the soap, which takes an hour or two, then the following day you turn the soap out of the mold and – if you made a block, you cut it into bars. Then you have to find a cool dark place to store the twenty or so bars of soap for anything from two to six weeks until it has "cured". Only then is saponification complete, resulting in usable soap.

By contrast, with the hot process, curing is taken out by cooking the soap mixture, this is great, it's almost like having a time machine. Twenty to thirty minutes of extra time spent cooking the mixture and you have completely cured soap, once it has been placed into the mold and has cooled off, it is completely ready to use.

Quite aside from the vast improvement in time, there are several other benefits with this process.

Many cold process soap makers have experienced the frustration of having their expensive scent completely disappear after the curing period, this is because both essential and fragrance oils are, well, oils, which means that they can become part of the saponification process and when this happens the finished soap smells of nothing much really.

Similarly, some dyes are affected by saponification, I have heard tales of a lovely batch of pale blue soap becoming a dreary shade of gray by the time it has fully cured.

Hot process soap making nicely side-steps both of these issues, because the saponification process has been completed by the time the dye and scent is added, so nothing is lost.

So I have made my first batch, it looks and smells great and was ready the day after I made it, the time it took to make was only a little longer than I would normally spend making a cold process batch, without any of the storage and curing afterwards.

I've come to the conclusion that I can stand that sort of old fashioned!

Finding a Nursing Home – How to Deal With the Emotional Factor of Moving to a Care Home

In your senior years, one of your major tasks may be to find a nursing home. In fact, finding and moving into the right caring home is the key factor in determining the quality of your life. By choosing the right care home for your needs, you're entering an environment specifically designed for people with your particular circumstances. Your new care home is a place where you can relax and not worry about the practicalities of daily life. You just need to focus on being as happy as possible. But this is not as simple as it sounds. For one thing, finding a nursing home and moving in is a very emotional experience.

So let's consider the emotional factors involved in moving into a caring home. Like all major life changes, it gives rise to a number of fears. These fears, which include fear of regimentation, of losing your identity and being institutionalized, can have substantial emotional effects on the new arrival at a nursing home. The fact is that arriving at your new care home can be a daunting business and how you handle it will depend on your personality. If you're the resilient type, you can take it all in your stride. But most people experience a sense of anxiety, bewilderment and dislocation when first entering residential care.

So what can you do about this? One important way to do this is by finding a nursing home that you feel comfortable in. You should not view a nursing home as just a building with a range of facilities and a collection of staff; you should view it as your new home, a place where you're going to spend most of your time in the future.

That's why it's important to visit every care home before deciding to move in. With luck, you'll find a place that feels just right but in any event, a detailed examination of potential nursing homes will mean that when you come to move in, it will be less of a surprise.

Other than visiting the homes and talking to residents, you should also ask questions about you potential new home. You need a find out to what extent you can maintain your independence. The fact is that caring homes vary significantly in their adherrence to fixed routines.

So you need to find out answers to questions such as:

How much flexibility there is regarding meal times and bath times? Being able to follow your own routine as much as possible can help you feel more independent.

What are the visitor arrangements? In the early days, regular visits will help dispel in the initial sense of dislocation and loneliness. And are your pets allowed to visit?

What personal items can you bring with you? Obviously you'll probably have less room that your former home. But being able to bring your own small items of furniture and hang your favorite pictures will go a long way towards creating a homely atmosphere.

What organized activities are there? The best way to become part of a community is to be socially active. This way you'll feel a sense of belonging and quickly make new friends. Likewise, if you're used to being out and about, you should check if residents are encouraged to step outside the home.

Obviously living in a residential care home is governed to some extent, and fixed routines have to be the order of the day. Flexibility varies from home to home and depends on such matters as budgets, staffing and facilities. But by creating your own personal routine and environment as much as possible, you can retain much of your own lifestyle and so avoid much of the emotional turmoil.

Failure to deal with the emotional consequences of moving into a care home can be serious and can have a substantial effect on your emotional well-being and ability to adapt to life in your new home. So choose your new nursing home with care, make it your own special place, and join in the social life. In this way, your new nursing home will be not just a place to live and be taken care of, but a place where you can thrive and enjoy a whole new lease of life.
